Our Mission

The Magic House will engage all children in hands-on learning experiences that encourage experimentation, creativity and the development of problem solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic.

The Magic House will be a leader in providing and advocating hands-on learning for children of all ages and abilities. As the premier children’s museum, it will be a unique, welcoming venue where childhood is protected, nurtured and celebrated.

Our History

The Magic House, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, was founded by two St. Louis women, Jody Newman and Barbie Freund, who volunteered three years of their time to create a cultural institution that would be both educational and fun.

To house the region’s first interactive children’s museum, they chose a vacant Victorian mansion in suburban Kirkwood, located in the demographic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area.  The house was originally built in 1901 as a private home for the George Lane Edwards family. Mr. Edwards was a managing partner in his family’s brokerage firm, A.G. Edwards & Sons, as well as the first president of the St. Louis Stock Exchange and a director of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Thanks to the efforts of the founders and the contributions of many St. Louis-area individuals, corporations and foundations, The Magic House opened to the public on October 16, 1979.

Our Audience

Throughout our history, The Magic House has sparked the imaginations of more than 10 million visitors. We welcome over 500,000 children, parents, grandparents and caregivers to the museum each year. More than 47,000 students visit The Magic House annually on school field trips. For those unable to come to the museum, The Magic House comes to them, reaching more than 30,000 children every year through outreach programs delivered to schools, libraries, community centers, child-care facilities and hospitals.

The Magic House is not just for kids! The museum also offers programming for grown-ups including staff development workshops for educators, parent-child classes and special events for grandparents.

Our Funding

The Magic House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. About half of the museum’s revenue comes from admission fees. Other sources of earned income are the Picnic Basket Café, Museum Shop, memberships and program fees.  The Magic House does not receive funds from the United Way, the Arts & Education Council or tax revenue.

The Magic House’s innovative and interactive exhibits and programs have been recognized by Nickelodeon, Orbitz, FamilyFun magazine and Zagat, which named The Magic House the nation’s top family attraction in “child appeal.”

Our Commitment to All Kids

The Magic House is committed to sharing our resources with all children, especially those who have the fewest opportunities.  The Star Society annual fund and the Education Program Fund both provide free field trips, outreach programs and other hands-on learning experiences for children, families and schools in need.  As part of the museum’s commitment to provide beauty, wonder, joy and magic for everyone, The Magic House also provides events and programs for special populations including new Americans, military families, seriously ill youth and foster children.

The beanstalk-themed climber at The Magic House in St. Louis

The Magic House , and its satellite location MADE for Kids , offer two distinct experiences under one institutional umbrella. The Magic House is St. Louis’ original, hands-on kids’ museum, with exhibits including: cultural immersion ; water/bubble/sand activities ; a child-scale village with a play grocery store , veterinarian office , fishing hole , newborn nursery , and library ; physics experiments ; three-story spiral slide ;  ever-growing outdoor play and construction areas ; and so much more. There’s also a beanstalk-themed climber that stretches from the lower level to the top floor where your young guests will absolutely confound you by slipping into and scrambling away.

MADE for Kids is a bit like the Art Studio/Make-It Workshop at The Magic House, supersized, with STEAM activities from digital painting and a well-stocked art/craft studio to pottery wheel , button-making station , and 3D printing projects . The recycling/upcycling craft area offers fun tools from scissors and needle/thread to hot glue guns.

Special Events

The Magic House has frequent special events, generally giving participants access to play in the museum afterward. One of the most popular, Big Truck Day , will blow the minds of your young vehicle lovers. Generally held in the fall, it’s a ticketed event that brings cranes, fire trucks, bucket lifts, sleeper cab trucks, and more up close for examination and exploration. Admission also includes a hot dog lunch and private playtime in Trike Town. Cultural events, too, like an observance of the Hindu festival of colors, Holi , and a German Easter celebration , draw crowds. Finally, holiday breakfasts and evenings with characters like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are annual traditions.

Summer camps for all ages, at both locations, tend to fill up; there’s also a live, virtual preschool art program called “Petite Picasso” Tuesday mornings from 9–9:30 a.m. (with advance registration required.)

Insider Tips

Families can bring outside food and drink to the Magic House, for consumption on the outdoor Garden Pavilion only.

Saint Louis Public Library cardholders can check out a free pass , just like a book, for admission to MADE, valid for admission for two adults and up to four children from the same household. Ask at the circulation desk of your branch. Once used for admission, the pass (issued on a lanyard) will be collected at the desk and returned to the library.

Membership Perks

The Magic House/MADE offers nine annual membership levels , many of which include shop and café discounts, summer camp discounts, members-only events, reciprocity memberships at other Association of Children’s Museums, and 50 percent off guest admissions. The levels range from a Kid’s Club pass ($25 for one child’s admission to the Magic House, with any accompanying adult paying regular admission) to a supersized Grandparents Club ($300, which covers admission to both locations for two grandparents, four adult children, and 16 grandchildren). Family Plus ($250) is a great option for parents and kids from a single household who want to get into both museums.

For just MADE for Kids, there’s an annual membership ($75, two adults, four children). Finally, there are usually a couple of flash sales each year for the higher membership levels, so following The Magic House on social media is a good idea.

The Magic House: Good for varied ages, from babies through tweens in different areas. Grown-ups will definitely be taking one for the team here, but the delight for the kids is worth it. Baby & Me and Wonder Works exhibits are best for the preschool set, while the Children’s Village and Make-It Workshop are best for school-age and up.

MADE: The hands-on opportunities here are best suited for school-aged visitors, and some (like robotics, game design, and 3D printing) require the ability to read and follow instructions to get the intended result. Great for kids and adults who want to experiment with art, physics, engineering, and upcycling.

Food: At The Magic House, the Picnic Basket Café offers meals and snacks that will cover most appetites, and they’ve somehow got it down to a rapid-serve system. Preordering online is available. No food service at MADE.

Shopping: A shop near the admission desk at The Magic House sells T-shirts, imaginative play toys, and science gear for the preschool/elementary set. Small case of items for purchase at MADE, some for use in the makerspaces onsite.

Child development researchers at Washington University School of Medicine  are inviting 4-7-year-old children and a caregiver to participate in a study investigating what children know about suicide along with risk factors for experiencing suicidality early in life. We are seeking children who  have  and who  have not  experienced suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Children who participate will 1) answer brief questions about their understanding of suicide (we want to learn what children at different ages know, we do not teach them anything new), 2) play games, and 3) complete a safe and non-invasive EEG. Caregivers will complete interviews and surveys. Families can earn up to $110 for participating. LEARN MORE AND SIGN UP HERE

Dinos and Books: A Reading Focus! Mark's lifelong work with Children's books and reading continues with Traveling Dinos. From the beginning, to the end, books are incorporated in a way seen in no other museum. As reference points, explanations, inspiration, and shear fabulousness, great books help the museum come to life for your kiddos! Did you know every classic children's fiction/non fiction series features at least one dinosaur book? From Magic Tree House, The Magic School Bus, The A to Z Mysteries, to The Boxcar Kids and beyond.  New Dino Fiction and Science Non- fiction is coming at a rate like we've seen with few other areas of interest. Over and over we've seen hard to reach kids connect with something in the museum that captivates them, which opens the pathway for you to guide them in areas of interest. One of the coolest things that happens regularly is when we see a kid sitting in the middle of the hubbub of the visit leafing through one of the displayed books, lost in the pages. Magic does happen here! After all, it's what we do! You did know you were in the Magic Business right?
