Waibaidu Bridge

This bridge is situated at the lower reach of Suzhou Creek and the west side of Huangpu Park, linking with Huangpu River. It is the first all-steel bridge, and the only surviving example of camelback truss bridge. Waibaidu Bridge is a component of Shanghai skyline.

Day Cruise VS Night Cruise: Which One to Choose?

Do you feel a little difficult whether to choose a day cruise or a night cruise? There is no need to worry about the schedules for Huangpu River cruises which are available from 11:00 till 21:30.

The night view of the Pujiang River is unmissable. At night, both sides of the Huangpu River are brilliantly illuminated, and you can start from the Shiliupu Wharf or Qinhuangdao Wharf and travel on the river. The Yangpu Bridge and Nanpu bridge across the Huangpu River, are just like jade belts. The beautiful Pudong Binjiang Avenue and the unique Shanghai International Convention Center, have formed a beautiful scenery line under the gorgeous lighting, which is dazzling. The boat provides Chinese food, Western food, a buffet, and other services. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Huangpu River and have delicious food at the same time.

Most of the travelers choose to take a cruise at night to appreciate the spectacular light show with dazzling lights from the skyscrapers. With a delightful mood, you can either stay in the cabin or stand quietly on the sundeck to enjoy the amazing night view. Especially for those who have a short time in Shanghai, taking a night cruise after Shanghai day tour covered highlighted tourist attractions is highly recommended.

Travelers who take a Huangpu River cruise in the daytime can have clear sightseeing along the banks both on the west side and east side. It is suitable for travelers who have flexible time with no hurry to visit other tourist spots that have limited entrance hours. It is recommended to do day cruise in the spring and autumn seasons and try to avoid the hot summertime.

Shanghai Huangpu River Cruise: Route, Price, Tips

Shanghai Huangpu River Cruise: Route, Price, Tips

When traveling in Shanghai, you should not miss a cruise tour on the Huangpu River. It is the best way to admire Shanghai's classic skyline views of colonial architecture and modern skyscrapers along the river.

The Huangpu River — "the Mother River of Shanghai"

The Huangpu River, the largest river passing through the city of Shanghai, is honored as the mother river of Shanghai .

It stretches for 113 kilometers (70 miles) with an average width of 400 meters and a depth of 9 meters. It snakes its way through Shanghai and divides the city into two sections : Pudong in the east and Puxi in the west.

It is also the source of most of Shanghai's drinking water, after it goes through a purification process, of course. Today, the Huangpu River is the site of a bustling tourist business in the form of river cruises.

Cruise Route and Price

There are many cruise options which vary in size, capacity, decoration, and amenities. Some boats look very trendy with a modern-style bar, while some are decorated in a traditional Chinese style. The cruises can hold passengers ranging from 80 to 1,000. You can choose a boat based on your interests.

There are several tour lengths you can choose from, from a 30-minute cruise to a 3½-hour cruise. The cruises along the Huangpu River often start from the wharf near the Bund, and head towards Yangpu Bridge or Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, and back again along the opposite side of the river to the Bund.

At present, the most popular one is the 50-minute classic cruise . The cruises are available during the day and night. It is recommended to take a cruise at night when the river is veiled in the sparkling neon lights on both sides.

  • Cruise route: Shiliupu Wharf near the Bund – Shanghai Tower – Shanghai World Financial Center – Jinmao Tower – Oriental Pearl TV Tower – Yangpu Bridge – Waibaidu Bridge – Monument to the People's Heroes – Peace Hotel – Customs House – back to the wharf
  • Boarding place: Shiliupu Wharf near the Bund (531 Zhongshan East 2nd Rd)
  • Duration: about 50 minutes
  • Cruise operating hours: 11am–9:30pm
  • Interval: 15–30 minutes
  • Price:  around 150 yuan (≈US$22) (for sightseeing only, without dinner or snacks)
  • Ticket booking:
  • 1) Tickets can be purchased at Shiliupu Wharf ticket office at Wai Ma Lu 80. 2) You can buy your ticket online or through ticket agents. Contact us for details.  3) Many hotels also provide a ticket booking service; you can check with your hotel.

What to See on the Cruise

On the cruise, you will see the distinctive contrasts between the classical European buildings and soaring modern skyscrapers from the two sides of the Huangpu River.

Besides offering a privileged view of the bridges that span the Huangpu River, the cruise boats also offer an excellent view of the famous colonial-era buildings that make up the Bund on the eastern bank as well as buildings such as the Peace Hotel, with its unique pyramid roof in blazing green, and the Customs House, with its large clock tower.

On the western bank, you will see a bustling metropolis full of modern skyscrapers and towering buildings, such as Jinmao Tower , the Oriental Pearl TV Tower , and Shanghai World Financial Center .

The Best Times to Take a Cruise

The best times to take a cruise on the Huangpu River are March–May and September–November when the weather is pleasant. You can enjoy the scenery on the deck of the boat and have a great opportunity to take clear and awesome pictures.

If you decide to go on a cruise on a cold day, remember to take a coat. It can be very chilly when you stand on the deck. Rainy days will be a little foggy so some of the scenery on the Bund may be obscured.

Nearby Attractions

  • Yuyuan : It is a classic Chinese garden with rich history and culture. You will see traditional Chinese garden architecture, and exquisite sculptures and carvings.
  • The Bund : The architecture along the Bund is a living museum of the colonial history of the 1800s.
  • Nanjing Road is Shanghai's busiest shopping street lined with top-end shopping malls, old-brand shops, and traditional eateries.

Enrich Your Experience with a Huangpu River Cruise

It is a great choice to take a relaxing cruise on the Huangpu River after a full day of sightseeing. Stand on the deck to get a feel for the city , and take pictures of the incredible skyline.

  • 3-Day Essence of Shanghai and Watertown Tour : You can add a Huangpu River cruise into this tour to enrich your experience.

Our award-winning cruise ships in china, helpful tips before you go.

If you’re familiar with your China geography, you’re probably thinking that Beijing and Shanghai are not right by the coast. And then wondering how a cruise ship gets there. Our ships pull into nearby harbors for those two cities: Tianjen for Beijing and Baoshan for Shanghai.

Tianjen is located about 80 miles from Beijing and ships that go there typically stay overnight, providing you with plenty of time to travel to the city and back. You’ll likely want to partake in an overnight shore excursion that gives you extra time in Beijing as you’ll get to explore the nightlife and stay in modern accommodations in the city.

The Shanghai cruise terminal for our ships is Baoshan Port. This cruise terminal is located about 15 miles north of Shanghai’s city center and is able to easily accommodate large ships. Shuttles are usually available to get into the city, or you can book a convenient shore excursion so you don’t have to stress about getting back to the ship on time.

If you are embarking on a cruise from China that sails roundtrip from Shanghai or Hong Kong, you can finish up your cruise and take off on a shore excursion that conveniently drops you off at the airport or hotel later that day. See the sights of your disembarkation city and then meet your luggage at your next destination point and either fly back home or get ready for your next adventure.

You can also plan into your trip itinerary a City Stay afterward that lets you spend two nights after your cruise exploring the China city where your cruise ends with a stay in a luxurious hotel, guided tours, and plenty of free time to do whatever you want.

When you’re figuring out what to pack for your trip to China, keep in mind that most China cruise itineraries sail there in March or the autumn months of October and November. Therefore, you’ll want to pack layers as it may be warmer or cooler depending if you’re in the lowlands or mountains, or the coast or city centers.

When visiting in shoulder season, you’ll also probably want to pack a warm jacket to wear if you’ll be sightseeing in the evening during your trip.

Now, book Huangpu River cruise tickets on smartphone

Visitors wanting to take a one-hour tour of the Huangpu River on cruise can now book tickets on smartphones and use QR codes for admission.

It takes less than five minutes to scan the code, check luggage and get onboard the cruise ships for the tour, which makes it convenient for visitors.

Generally visitors have to buy tickets at the ticket office of the East Jinling Road Harbor terminal, or book tickets online and get the paper tickets at the window of the office. During holidays or weekends it takes long time to queue for the tickets at the window.

With an admission of 60 yuan (US$9.23), the one-hour tour of the Huangpu River starts from the East Jinling Road Harbor, through Shiliupu Harbor, Old Harbor and Dongchang Road Harbor, then returns to the East Jinling Road Harbor.

The whole trip covers several landmarks on both banks of the Huangpu River, including the Bund, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Tower and Old Harbor commercial center.

The iconic Huangpu River cruise tours will get more diversified this year to create a popular moving tourist destination and make cruises on the landmark river a world-class attraction.

Several new itineraries have been planned this year. On May 21, a cruise route serving the 10th China Flower Expo on Chongming Island will kick into gear. Ships will depart from the Shiliupu Dock in Huangpu District for the one-day tour, ferrying passengers along the river during the day and at night, with Shanghai delicacies and beautiful landscapes of blossoming flowers.

The tour will combine both water and land tours with riverbank sightseeing and flower appreciation. The flower expo will take place in Chongming from May 21 to July 2, and is the first to take place on an island.

Three water routes taking passengers on a journey to learn about the city's revolutionary past will soon be launched to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, featuring a number of "red" culture venues along the river.

The tours will also include a visit to the National Anthem Museum in Yangpu District and a walking tour along the riverfront. People will see the industrial relics of Hongkou and Yangpu districts during the trip. Onboard, they will learn about the history of the Communist Party of China.

Tailored cruises for wedding ceremonies and conferences will also be launched soon.

Pudong skyline at night, Shanghai, China

Shanghai, China

Shanghai is one of Asia’s most dynamic cities, and one of juxtapositions. It’s divided in two by the Huangpu River—to the west is Puxi and to the east Pudong. Puxi is the city’s downtown and its historic center; on this side of the river, much of the city was historically divided into the famous foreign concessions, and it’s here that much of the shopping, dining and nightlife is concentrated today. Shanghai has more than 30,000 restaurants, from humble soup dumpling spots to formal affairs helmed by Michelin-starred chefs. Its museums, particularly the Shanghai Museum with its 120,000-strong collection of antiquities, are equally impressive. Pudong is where the city’s major skyscrapers stand, among them the Jin Mao and Oriental Pearl towers.

Nowhere is Shanghai’s rich history and bright future more evident than along the Huangpu River. Stand on the Puxi side and, with the Bund—along which curve Shanghai’s stately early-20th-century heritage buildings—behind you, you can gaze across the river at some of the world’s tallest buildings, soaring skyscrapers that glow nightly, their lights reflected in the river.

The cruise ship carrying about 2,500 inbound travelers arrives at Shanghai's Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal on Saturday.

"It is always a pleasure to have a friend from afar," the ancient Chinese saying goes. And this is the case on Saturday when Shanghai welcomed about 2,500 foreign friends from afar with boisterous dragon and lion dances, fun intangible cultural heritage experiences and unique gifts.

The cruise ship "Mein Schiff" of TUI Cruises docked at Shanghai's Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan District early Saturday morning.

Travelers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland were greeted with a grand ceremony and warm welcome.

A dragon and lion performance provides a warm welcome to inbound travelers.

At the terminal, diversified intangible cultural heritage items of Baoshan District, from Gucun sachet making and Wusong dough modeling to Youyi folk paper-cut, Luodian colorful lanterns and Yuepu bamboo plaiting, were showcased. The guests also received sachets bearing the Chinese character " fu (福)," meaning "blessings," made of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions, as gifts.

Following 16 routes, they embarked on two-day trips to Shanghai's landmark attractions such as the Bund, Yuyuan Garden Scenic Area, Hengfu (Hengshan-Fuxing Road) Historical Conservation Zone, Shanghai Museum, and Zhujiajiao Water Town.

The dragon dance attracts sightseers.

They will also explore the city's historic architecture and appreciate "Era – Spirit of Shanghai," a haipai (Shanghai-style) acrobatics show.

When Daniel Breinig, his wife and two children from Germany arrived at the terminal, they were very excited.

"It's the first time for us to visit the city, which looks wonderful," he told Shanghai Daily.

"We have always wanted to see Asian culture and Shanghai culture."

Breinig said they will experience both the historic and modern sides of Shanghai as they will visit classic gardens and skyscrapers.

"China is a wonderful country and I hope to have a wonderful day here," he said.

A photo upon arrival

It's the second visit by Petra Seidl to Shanghai and this time, she will explore the city independently with friends.

"We will spend two days in Shanghai," she told Shanghai Daily. "We saw a little tram last time, and we loved it.

"We were on the Bund at night, which was beautiful, and we also visited the Yuyuan Garden. We look what else is to see today."

She said she will try something in the market, like dumplings, and visit the Bund again.

Visitors receive information about local payments.

China's implementation of a visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders of Germany has been a boon, said Seidl.

Last time, it took a few weeks for her visa application, and this time, it's much easier, she said.

Anja Hofmeister from Germany, added: "We meet very friendly people upon arrival, and it's very easy to visit here."

Such large-scale inbound tourist groups marks a step forwards to the goal of making Shanghai the first stop in China for inbound travelers, officials said.

An alluring destination for inbound tourists

The city launched the "Visit Shanghai" campaign in December last year to boost inbound tourism, making Shanghai the first stop in China for inbound travelers.

Shanghai has proved to be an alluring destination for inbound tourists.

Since this year, the city has witnessed a steady increase of foreign travelers and its inbound tourism market has seen a robust recovery, according to the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.

A warm welcome.

The recovery of the cruise industry is even more striking as an increasing number of overseas travelers have selected Shanghai as the destination for a cruise tour, according to the bureau.

Between January and March this year, the city had 10 visiting cruise ships, recording 22,379 visits by travelers. It is estimated that the city will have 18 cruise ships through this year, bringing in 40,306 visits.

Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal is Asia's largest cruise hub, and the world's fourth. Cruise tours have played an important role in driving domestic and international dual circulation and boosting consumption, officials said.

It has installed POS machines accepting foreign bank cards at some 3,000 businesses including hotels, supermarkets, tourist attractions and catering venues across the city as well as major business circles such as Nanjing Road, Jing'an Temple and Xujiahui.

Shocking Disney Report Claims Characters Must Stay In Costume as Cruise Ship Sinks

in Disney Cruise Line

Disney Characters on Disney Cruise_feature_image

A shocking report has made some pretty major claims about what would happen if a Disney Cruise Line ship ran into trouble at sea.

In a recent update from Popbitch – a weekly British gossip newsletter that claims to share insider information from the entertainment at large – someone allegedly connected to the Disney Cruise Line opened up about what would happen if a cruiseliner was abandoned.

The Disney Dream sails in the ocean.

“As one of the most tightly controlled brands on the planet, Disney has some very strict protocols aboard their cruises – especially regarding emergency evacuations ,” the report claimed. “For instance, if a Disney cruise is to be abandoned, any employee who is in costume at the time of the alarm sounding must stay in costume.”

Yep, that’s right – they’re claiming that costumed cast members must stay in character even during an emergency situation . “They are not permitted to remove their heads and ruin the illusion for guests, so, therefore, have to navigate the deck dressed as a giant Mickey, Minnie, Chip, Dale, etc,” they said.

Mickey and Minnie on the Disney Cruise Line ships

That’s not the only shocking measure they’re claiming Disney takes to maintain the integrity of its characters. If a ship is sinking, it’s apparently one cast member’s shop to go to the costume store and “firmly lock it up.” This is to ensure that, if the ship does go down, the costumes go with it.

“They don’t want to risk the empty costumes getting loose and floating up to the top – leaving children traumatized by seeing Goofy’s lifeless body bobbing about on the surface,” they said.

(Personally, we feel like escaping a sinking ship would be much more traumatizing than seeing a Goofy costume at sea, but that’s just us).

Mickey and Minnie in front of a Disney Cruise ship

While the rumor initially appeared in an issue of the Popbitch digital newsletter, it took on a life of its own after it was shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) by tech journalist Olivia Solon.

However, the initial post has since been deleted because – good news – Solon has verified (as has Inside the Magic) that it is totally false . Cast members do not need to stay in costume while the Disney Cruise Line sinks. We didn’t doubt otherwise for a second, but it’s good to get official clarification and sink this rumor once and for all.

Water park-like attractions are just some of the recreations and activities offered aboard

Rumors aside, the Disney Cruise Line has dropped a series of exciting bombshells recently. Earlier this week, it unveiled details on its newest ship, Disney Destiny , which will boast a heroes and villains theme when it joins the fleet in 2025.

Another new ship will set sail for the first time in December 2024 . The Disney Treasure will include a restaurant inspired by  Coco  (2017), Plaza de Coco, a superhero dining experience named Worlds of Marvel, the history-inspired restaurant 1923 (named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded), and a Jungle Cruise-inspired bar.

What’s the strangest Disney rumor you’ve ever heard? Let us know in the comments!
