The seaside Greek town of Katakolon is the second busiest port in Greece, most famous for Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Then, take a walk among the shady ruins and discover the Doric Temple of Zeus, a 2nd century BC gymnasium and the impressive stadium. Back in Katakolon, you can rest tired feet by enjoying an evening at a winery and vineyard.

Mykonos is a picture perfect island filled with whitewashed steps and square houses, with attractive blue doors. The number of cashed-up tourists and A-listers visiting the island is booming, and hip new hotels, beach bars and restaurants are mushrooming. When you get hungry, make a stop in Little Venice – a picturesque portion of the old port filled with restaurants and terraces for some alfresco dining.

Mykonos Greek Island cruises provide the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax, whether you laze on the sands of Ftelia Beach or spend the afternoon seeking shade in the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. Take a walk along the waterfront, where fishing boats cast their reflections upon the bright blue waters, or stroll around the narrow marble-clad streets lined with quirky shops.

Rhodes is an island in the Aegean Sea, and is one of the most beautiful Greek Islands in the Dodecanese Islands, with glittering beachfront resorts with significant ancient ruins and lush landscapes undulating in the distance.

On our Rhodes cruises , make your first stop the idyllic Old Town and its medieval Street of the Knights. Dating back to the 14th-century, it was once home to the knights who ruled over the island. It’s part of the Knight’s Quarter, which is filled with formidable fortresses designed to protect against invaders. Athens & Piraeus

The unofficial ancient capital of the world, Athens include many pillars of Western history, from the ancient Acropolis and Temple of Olympian Zeus to the vast treasures of the 19 th century National Archaeological Museum. The 2004 Olympic Games sparked the transformation of Central Athens and brought enhancements to transportation and infrastructure that have improved Greece's capital.

Soaring mountains, ancient ruins, unspoilt green spaces and Byzantine churches; Athens is a beguiling destination of beauty, mythology, and history. Modern life plays out amid, around and in ancient landmarks, in this city that has had a human presence since some somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.

Ten kilometres southwest of central Athens, Piraeus is dazzling in its scale, its seemingly endless quays filled with ferries, ships, and hydrofoils. It's the biggest port in the Mediterranean (with more than 20 million passengers passing through annually), the hub of the Aegean ferry network, the centre of Greece’s maritime trade and the base for its large merchant navy. While technically its own city, it melts into the Athens sprawl, with close to half a million people living in the greater area.

Also known as Hania, Chania is a city on the north coast of Crete. Its most distinctive feature is its Venetian Harbour, dating back to the 14th-century. Here, you’ll find a lovingly restored lighthouse and a vibrant tangle of eateries, bars, and cafes.

Bring your camera along on one of our Chania cruises to capture the hot sun reflecting off pastel buildings, traditional tavernas and Turkish-inspired mosques. The centre of town is a shopper’s paradise, with an entire street named Skridlof, dedicated to fine leather goods. Once you’ve had your fix of retail therapy, it’s time to soak up a little of Chania’s history.

The Hania Archaeological Museum is a good place to start, as it is in a restored 16th-century Venetian church. Look out for ancient Roman floor mosaics, as well as Hellenistic jewellery and marble sculptures. Stretch your legs at the Firkas Fortress, which sits at the west end of Chania’s harbour. It was originally built to protect the city from Turkish invasion, and today, a section of it houses the fascinating Maritime Museum of Crete, which delves into the island’s naval history. Attempt to reach the top for spectacular views across the harbour, particularly at sunset.

Frequently mentioned in Greek mythology, Corfu is a bustling, elegant town that combines the ambience of medieval and modern. Venture across cypress-studded hills to find higgledy-piggledy villages in the fertile interior, and sandy coves lapped by cobalt-blue waters.

Located just off Greece’s northwest coast, Corfu shares much of the cuisine and culture of the mainland, with some British, French and Venetian influences mixed in. On one of our Corfu cruises, you can pick your own adventure: wanting to soak up the sun? Head to one of the island’s beaches, such as Longás. Surrounded by red rock cliffs and with views out to the Diapóndia islets, it’s the perfect spot to catch the sunset.

Elsewhere on the island, you’ll find diverse architecture to admire. The Palace of St Michael and St George in Corfu Town dates back to 1819 and is now the home to the immersive Corfu Museum of Asian Art. The Palaio Frourio is built in a Venetian style, and sits atop a headland to the east of Corfu Town. It’s enormous and sprawling, comprising a lighthouse, a bridge and a gatehouse which contains the Byzantine Collection of Corfu. A leisurely stroll up the hill and around the grounds is the perfect activity for a balmy early evening.

With its gorgeous hilltop villages, stunning sunsets, and volcanic beaches decorated with black, red or white sand, Santorini is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth. Take the winding coastal paths past fascinating rock formations through tiny villages, stopping at a restaurant to linger over the famous Greek cuisine.

The island’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating Minoan Bronze Age site of Akrotiri, which dates back to the fifth millennium BC and was excavated in 1967. And nestled deep in the volcanic rock, the gorgeous traditional Cyclades hilltop villages of Oia and Fira are other Greek gems worth visiting.

On one of our Santorini cruises, you’ll have plenty of time to explore both. Fira/Thera is the capital of the island and is home to a vast number of cultural gems, from Akrotiri – a Bronze Age settlement – to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Oia is the place to go for sweeping panoramic views. It overlooks Santorini’s famous caldera and is also home to the Venetian Oia Castle.

If you’re a keen walker, you can lose yourself on walks in Santorini. Start at the white-sand Paralia Vlichada, which has a dramatic location between rugged cliffs. Perissa Beach features black volcanic sand, while Kamari Beach sits at the foot of Mesa Vouno Mountain. As the sun begins to set in a riot of orange, gold and pinks, head to one of Santorini’s many wineries. Sipping a crisp white wine on a balmy evening overlooking the caldera is the perfect way to round off your time in Santorini.

It all began with a swift boarding process at the port of Athens, thanks to flawless logistics that allowed our guests to bypass lines and delays. Onboard, our team of Playmakers and guest services eagerly awaited them. After a quick check-in at the emergency assembly area, a week filled with Desire-style experiences commenced. At exactly 5:30, our captain and crew cast off the moorings and hoisted the anchors, marking the beginning of our voyage through calm waters and perfect temperatures, allowing our passengers to fully enjoy the clothing-optional areas.  Here, they could bask in the sun during the mornings and afternoons, visit each of the ports, and return in time to partake in the workshops offered by our experts, which were always fully booked. Sunsets over the Mediterranean and Aegean seas are truly special, and this time we were fortunate to relish them, along with the rare appearance of the Blue Moon, illuminating our nights and delighting all those who enjoyed this natural spectacle from their balconies.

Each day and night unfolded with smooth sailing, allowing us to savor exquisite dinners, make new friends, and reunite with old acquaintances. Every themed event was fun and sensual, with the Rock night being one of the most acclaimed, along with the traditional white party. Our Sensual Cabaret grew bolder each time, preparing everyone to continue the passion in our Playroom, or if you preferred, you could enjoy a night of dancing to the live band’s rhythm or at our discotheque.

In conclusion, this cruise has become one of our favorites. Greece embraced us once again, and we have committed to return soon to discover new islands and create new experiences. Make sure to join us and be a part of them.

MSC Cruises Bringing 500,000 Passengers to Greece this Season

MSC Cruises , the world’s third-largest cruise brand, will have six different ships calling to Greek shores this season and expects to bring some 500,000 passengers to the country, according to MSC Cruises Executive Director Norbert Stiekema .

This year, MSC Cruises began calling Greek ports in March, marking the start of year-round operation .

The company’s ships will make over 400 calls to nine different island and mainland destinations around Greece, including the MSC Sinfonia and MSC Opera ships homeporting in Piraeus .

“Greece is very important for us and we see many opportunities for development,” Stiekema said while speaking to an audience of journalists and travel agents on board the MSC Sinfonia while docked at Piraeus on April 4.

Sailing year-round from Piraeus from March to November 2024, the MSC Sinfonia will visit Split (Croatia), Venice (Italy), Brindisi (Italy), and Mykonos . The MSC Opera will also home port from Piraeus from May to October 2024 and visit Kefalonia , Corfu , Katakolon , Bari and Santorini .

Presenting the company’s i tineraries and offers , Stiekema said MSC expects to bring some 500,000 cruise passengers to Greece in 2024.

“That’s massive because these passengers are also buying shore excursions,” he said, adding that the company helps boost local economies as well.

In addition to the MSC Sinfonia’s itinerary, MSC Cruises’s Greece offering includes the MSC Lirica calling to Mykonos and Santorini ; the MSC Armonia to Corfu and Zakynthos ; the MSC Divina to Santorini and Mykonos ; and the MSC Opera to Santorini , Piraeus and Katakolon . The MSC Splendida will also call to Greek ports but destinations have yet to be announced.

Winter calls in Greece for the first time

The MSC Sinfonia will also homeport in Piraeus for a whole winter season , from November 2024 to May 2025, thus extending the cruise season . The ship will include stops in Izmir/Efessos (Turkey), Istanbul (Turkey), Corfu (Greece), and Bari (Italy).

MSC Cruises winter route falls in line with the Greek government’s wider five-year tourism development plan to extend the core visitor season.

According to Stiekema, MSC Cruises considers the route as “a real opportunity” to start developing the winter market from Greece .

“We know that Greece is more of a summer market than a winter one and that used to be the case in Italy, France and other countries… However, over time we’ve managed to create a cruise market for the winter as well and that for sure will happen in Greece,” he said.

Since the announcement of the winter cruise, Stiekema said occupancy volumes a re at a satisfying level. “It’s going in line with expectations from an occupancy perspective and from a price perspective,” he said, adding that numbers will rise mainly after August as the Greeks are known for being “late bookers” and usually make reservations after the summer.

Speaking about MSC’s Greek cruise customers, he pointed out that they add up to around 20,000 and said the company’s aim is to develop the Greek source market.

“It is a tremendous opportunity because 20,000 is tremendously low, so one of our objectives is to really improve this market here with our travel partners… The Greeks need to understand that a cruise is not a ferry and does not just take you from one destination to another… Cruises offer unique experiences both on the ship and at the destinations, experiences way different compared to what they have been experiencing on other holidays,” he said.

“Your cabin takes you directly to the destination… You go to sleep and wake up the next morning and see that you are in Mykonos. This is an experience that is way different from taking a plane, being in the airport, taking a car, going to a hotel.”

Referring to future challenges, Stiekema said that all the more larger capacity cruise ships will create congestion in the port of Piraeus but also in other ports of the Eastern Mediterranean in the coming years.

“We are very actively looking at how we can handle this and what could be other opportunities from a Greek port perspective… What is clear is that we see this as a growth area,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of expressing interest in the tender for the exploitation of the port of Lavrio , Stiekema replied that there are no announcements on the issue.

Staying on the subject of congestion at ports, he said the company this year is reducing pressure on destinations such as Santorini and Mykonos.

“Greece for us is very important so we are looking to take off pressure from the two classic islands – Mykonos and Santorini – due to logistical challenges in the summer… We are looking at other islands,” he said.

MSC Cruises 2024-2025 Greece season sees increased calls to other ports including Kefalonia, Katakolon, Zakynthos and Corfu.

The 7 Best Italy Cruises to Book Now

Visiting Sicily is a must on any Italy sailing.

When it comes to Italy cruises, your best bet is to go with a small-ship sailing. Big ships tend to do the tried and true— Rome , Venice , Florence , Naples—not that there’s anything wrong with seeing the Colosseum, St. Mark’s Square, Michelangelo’s David , and the ruins of Pompeii . But on the best cruises around Italy, there’s opportunity to go deeper and at a slower pace.

You’ll often still be able to check off major marquee attractions, while at the same time admiring the pastel-colored villages and hairpin roadways along the Amalfi Coast, the unspoiled landscapes of Puglia, the drama of Sicily, or the dreamy Ligurian coast. In addition to visiting off-the-beaten-path places, small ships tend to linger in ports, with the best itineraries including late evening or overnight stays. That way, there’s time to sample the dining scene—key for cruisers like me who like to try the local pasta dish in every town.

The best time for an Italy cruise

The main season for Italy cruises is April to October, coinciding with weather that increases the allure of beaches and outdoor attractions, even if visiting ancient ruins in the heat of summer may require some fortitude.

Where Italy cruises sail

Amalfi Coast

Along the famed Amalfi Coast , ships visit Sorrento, overlooking the bay of Naples, and colorful Amalfi, dramatically backed by steep cliffs. Some itineraries also including the strikingly beautiful Positano. Smaller yacht vessels may sail directly to the fancy island of Capri (otherwise there will be a shore excursion, as with the larger ships). Among other shore choices in this region is a visit to ancient Pompeii.

Italy cruise itineraries often land at several ports on Sicily, and some itineraries circumnavigate the island. Each port has its own allure, including the city scene in Palermo; Syracuse, which showcases ancient attractions from when it was a prominent Greek city; Taormina, with its impressive hilltop location and Greek theater; and Lipari, which has a charming, tiny island ambience. In addition to striking landscapes, attractions include Roman and Greek ancient historic sights and views of Mount Etna, plus filming locations featured in The Godfather movies and in Season 2 of the HBO series The White Lotus . If while cruising Sicily your ship ventures to Stromboli, with its famous volcano, it will be from a safe distance—and if you’re lucky, in the dark when you can witness the lava flowing.

Increasingly popular on the cruise map are destinations in Puglia , a region of olive groves and national parks. Small ships call in the city of Lecce and town of Gallipoli, with their impressive baroque architecture; Taranto, a bustling port city with a history dating back to the Spartans and known for its fresh seafood restaurants; the town of Otranto, where a chapel in the cathedral displays skulls of martyrs from a 15th-century Ottoman siege; and the scenic fishing town of Monopoli, with its beaches and castles.

Adriatic Coast and Sardinia

Small ships also visit Italy’s Adriatic Coast, including the historic Ancona, which has Roman ruins and beaches. Additional islands might appear on an Italy cruise itinerary, too, such as Sardinia, where the wild landscape affords hiking opportunities with views, and you can wander among medieval sights in the historic port city of Cagliari.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. Russian floating nuclear power plant set for first refuel

The new Russian nuclear power plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, is the only floating one of its kind in the world.

Nuclear fuel has been delivered to the world’s first floating nuclear power plant, which is located in Pevek in the Chukotka region of north-east Russia. The plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, supplies heat and power to the town and is based on two KLT-40S reactors generating 35MW each.

The fuel was delivered to the site by TVEL, Rosatom’s fuel division, via the Northern Sea Route and manufactured by TVEL’s Elektrostal Machine-Building Plant in the Moscow region.

According to TVEL, unlike land-based reactors that require replacement of a proportion of their fuel rods every 12–18 months, “the refuelling takes place once every few years and incudes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor”. As such, there can be up to three and a half years between refuelling.

Akademik Lomonosov first became operational in December 2019. At the time the reactor was seen as a pilot project for a future fleet of floating nuclear power plants and onshore installations based on Russian-made small modular reactors. Due to their functionality, they are intended for deployment in disparate areas of Russia’s north and far-east. The operable reactor was named after 18 th century Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov , who was the first native Russian to be appointed to the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1742.

The plant is 144m long and 30m wide. It supplies electricity to the town of Pevek, which has a population of around 4,000, but could potentially supply a city of up to 100,000 people. Rosatom is currently constructing four floating power units, which it plans to export.

In June, Andrey Nikipelov, Rosatom’s deputy director-general for mechanical engineering and industrial solutions, said : “In addition to environmental friendliness and stable operation, floating nuclear power units are able to provide energy independence – both from the main power grids and, in a broader sense, protection from the volatility of energy markets… floating power units have great commercial potential both in Russia and abroad.”
