Lake county news-sun | bored teachers comedy tour features relatable content for anyone who has been in a school.
Teachers can get the last laugh before returning to the classroom this fall when the Bored Teachers Comedy Tour comes to town.
Bored Teachers is an online platform filled with funny and relatable videos and other resources for teachers. The brand recently created a tour with several of its popular teacher personalities and hit the road.
The tour stops at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan and at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Riddles Comedy Club in Alsip.
Included on the tour are Jess Smith known online as “Miss Smith,” Devin Siebold — “The Sarcastic Classroom,” Vinny Thomas — “Mr. Thomas English” and host K.C. Mack.
Siebold is a former high school social studies from Florida. He taught for 13 years before leaving to realize his dream of making a living through stand-up comedy and online content creation, he said.
“I was able to make enough money to leave teaching about five years ago, but I stayed on because it was really a passion of mine,” he said. “Lately, it’s become so stressful and politicized that I decided to just do what I love, which is comedy and content creation.”
He was the first comic Bored Teachers signed.
“I created a few videos for them and they went pretty mega-viral. Most of the videos I did got between 10 and 20 million views,” he said. “I told (them) I thought a teacher tour would be fantastic. We discussed it literally about seven or eight years ago.”
The idea took some time to come to fruition and in the meantime, the pandemic and virtual teaching added even more comedy fodder. With the rise of the TikTok app, teachers had a new, easy-accessible platform to create and find comedy.
“It’s been unbelievable. We’ve sold out so many venues and met thousands of teachers and they say it’s just what they need,” Siebold said. “These are all the teachers they know from videos online and they’re either TikTok famous or YouTube famous but they’re actual comedians too. It’s always a surprise when people show up and they’re like, ‘Well, they’re funny on TikTok, we don’t know how funny they will be in person.’ And then their faces hurt when they leave from laughing so hard.”
Siebold won the Boston World Series of Comedy, appeared on “Laughs” on Fox and was named 2015 iHeartMedia Monster’s in the Morning Comedian of the Year. Unlike others on the tour, he went from the stand-up comedy world to making online content. Those who came from the viral video world needed some coaching to make the transition to the stage, he said.
“It’s been seamless,” he said.
The teachers on tour have their own niches: Siebold taught high school, Thomas taught middle school English, Smith teaches elementary school and Mack teaches special education.
“We all have our own individual stories,” he said. “It’s such an eclectic mix of all the teachers we’re representing. It’s funny stories about the things we see in class to dealing with parents to co-workers that might lose it. We have so much fun up there — we have so many ‘Oh my gosh, that happens to me too’ moments.”
Audiences tell them over and over how much they need to the night of laughter, he said.
“It’s been so stressful being a teacher lately. When people leave, they’re like, ‘I can’t tell you how great it feels to be seen,'” he said. “To know that all the craziness is not just happening to them. To be able to laugh it off and de-stress.”
Audiences should prepare for two hours of nonstop laughter, he said.
“I’m not even being biased because I’m in it, these are some of the funniest jokes and stories,” he said. “I’ve been doing comedy for 10 years and beginning to end, this is one of the best shows they can get, hands down. We have a lot of teachers who bring out their husbands or their wives and they leave going, ‘That was a thousand times better than I could’ve anticipated.’ It’s really just a night of laughter.”

‘Bored Teachers’ delight a captivated audience
The Bored Teachers Comedy tour came to Shippensburg on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Luhrs Performing Arts Center. With a rotating cast of teacher-comedians, the tour declares itself to be “the #1 teacher entertainment platform in the world.”
The cast of teacher-comedians has attracted millions of followers and views on social media platforms, and their fast-paced sets work together to create an atmosphere of non-stop comedy. The “We Can’t Make This Stuff Up” tour provides a night full of raucous and raunchy, laugh-until-you-cry type humor that is sure to continue attracting crowds.
The lineup of teacher-comedians in Shippensburg included Jay Yoder and Jared Waters. Yoder opened up the show with jokes about teaching during the pandemic and the brief reprieve from the stench of middle-schoolers, which is relatable to anyone who has walked down a middle school hallway.
If the crowd was slow at the beginning, it definitely woke up when Waters’ set began. Waters relied on a commanding and exuberant stage presence, even though he was the smallest comedian on stage. His set made educators in the audience shriek with laughter at jokes they definitely would not be sharing with their students.
Following Waters was Devin Siebold, who somehow managed to win over the audience with deprecating jokes about their hometown. Complaining about the lack of service and poor UberEats options, Siebold kept up the staggering pace of laugh-out-loud humor set by the first two comedians.
Chris Voth took the stage after Siebold. Though it was Voth’s first performance on the tour, his set was just as engaging and entertaining as the first three. Voth dealt expertly with a malfunction during his set, joking about his “dark” humor as the stage lights went down in the middle of a joke about his three-legged cat.
The final comedian, KC Mack, closed out the show with a bang. Though it had been nearly two hours since the show started, Mack kept the audience on the edge of their seats with jokes about old Halloween costumes and teacher cliques.
Teaching is just as difficult as it is important, and the Bored Teachers Comedy Tour offers a well-deserved night of entertainment for educators. Even for non-teachers, the show is one of the funniest around.
