Bunduki Books In Order

Publication order of bunduki books.

The “Bunduki” series by author John Thomas Edson features characters that are connected to the “Tarzan” series of characters and it was at first authorized by Edgar Rice Burroughs’s estate. That being said, the fourth novel and the short stories were not authorized and do not at all feature Tarzan or Jane by their names. This is due to the fact that in 1976, permission was rescinded on ERB’s estate’s part. It is a bit of a sequel series to the “Tarzan” series that author Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote. The series of novels is a bit of a departure for Edson, as it is set in jungles and on another planet, rather than in the old west.

James Allenvale Gunn or ‘Bunduki’ (which means firearm of any kind in Swahili) is someone who was adopted by Jane and Tarzan when he was only two years old after rebels, during the Mau Mau Uprising, killed his parents. Bunduki gets married to Dawn, who is Tarzan’s great-granddaughter. Everything that Tarzan knew, he passed on to Bunduki. His biological father was descendant from Sir Henry Curtis, someone who toured Africa with Allan Quartermain. On his mother’s side (Allison Dawn ‘Tex’ Gunn), he is related to Mark Counter, a Texan. Bunduki’s parents and Dawn’s parents both served together in a Special Missions Organization of the Secret Intelligence Service called ‘Group Thirteen’ during the second world war.

Dawn Drummond- Clayton, daughter of Sir John Armond Drummond-Clayton. She is a graduate from the Rodean School and is expert in martial arts, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, and fencing. Her grandfather is Korak the Killer and her grandmother is Meriem. Bulldog Drummond is her granduncle. Like Bunduki, she does not age and is not affected by diseases that are found in the tropics or parasitic infections thanks to Tarzan’s treatment that he gave to her. The seventies saw her and her mate get transported to a planet called Zillikian by a breed of aliens that are known as “Suppliers”. She uses a hunting bow (Ben Pearson Marauder Take-Down) and a fighting knife (Randall Model 1).

The planet that Bunduki and Dawn get taken to, called Zillikian, which is a counter Earth. It is a planet that is opposite the sun and in the exact same orbit as the Earth. There are quite a few similarities to Earth like climate and wildlife, but there is not the same level of industrialization of Humans that Earth has.

There are both novels and short stories in the “Bunduki” series. The first novel in the series was published in 1975 (the last novel was published in 1980), and the first story was published in 1979 and the last story in the series was published in 1990. A fifth novel was written for the series, but has never been published. All of the stories in the series were published by Corgi Books in England. The short stories are set on Earth and serve as prequels to everything that happens in the novels.

“Bunduki” written by John Thomas Edson is the first book in the “Bunduki” series that was released in the year 1975. Dawn and Bunduki should have been killed when their vehicle crashed into the Gambuti Gorge. But instead, they woke to find that they were in the primeval jungle, armed with some primitive weapons. Dawn’s senses were opened on the plain filled with game. They have to find each other and they are guided by subconcious suggestions to do so. They have to get passed all of the terrain that is populated by savage people and animals. Danger and death, they will face many many times before they are reunited. It is a good thing, then, that they are both the adoptive great-granddaughter and son of Tarzan (who is also known as Lord Greystoke or Tarzan of the Apes).

Fans of the novel enjoyed the way Edson is able to take on the Tarzan stories, and that these feel like a continuation of them. Some were pulled in by the fascinating story and could not tear themselves away to do other essential things.

“Bunduki and Dawn” written by John Thomas Edson is the second book in the “Bunduki” series that was released in the year 1976. Dryaka (High Priest of the Mun-Gatah clan) is furious that Bunduki and Dawn have gotten away from him. At the same time, his camp is in ruins; with the quagga herd stampeded that have not been recovered, and the tents have been burned. He is losing respect from the other elders in the tribe and he is losing his standing. San-Gatah, most powerful of all the Mun-Gatah nation’s communities shows up and wants to boot Drayaka from his post and replace him, with his wife taking over as Protectress. At the same time, Dawn and Bunduki are headed for a village that is called Telonga. Romance is in the air between these two adoptive cousins. They are able to hunt and kill an animal and eat it raw.

Fans of the novel enjoy the novel, finding that they cannot get enough of these books, and wish that more had been written by Edson. Like most of Edson’s work, this features quite the attention to detail. Some fans wish that the novels in the series were easier to get a hold of because at this point the novels are rare and now out of print. At the very least, in e-book format.

“Sacrifice for the Quagga God” written by John Thomas Edson is the third book in the “Bunduki” series that was released in the year 1976. After being taking by Mun-Gatahs’ High Priest, Dawn is going to be sacrificed to the Quagga God. Bunduki fears that even he, who knows a lot about being in the jungle, can save Dawn from such a fate of dying for Quagga God. He also must try to save Zillikian from the Thunder Powder from coming down on everything.

Fans of the novel enjoy the way that the novel shows once again, why this is a great series and they wish that there would have been more novels and stories in the series. Once again, fans enjoy another great adventure novel about Dawn and Bunduki by Edson.

The mother of Zan and Zu Pike was an important noble of Bunduki.

Young mineral heir Yun was sent to Bunduki to learn patience from the Followers of Palawa, though he returned to his father when they refused to train him in teräs käsi. There, the group encountered Arden Lyn, who was likewise seeking vengeance against the monks . [2]

About the author

J. t. edson.

John Thomas Edson (February 17 1928, died July 17 2014 ) J.T. Edson was a former British Army dog-handler who wrote more than 130 Western novels, accounting for some 27 million sales in paperback.

Edson's works - produced on a word processor in an Edwardian semi at Melton Mowbray - contain clear, crisp action in the traditions of B-movies and Western television series. What they lack in psychological depth is made up for by at least 12 good fights per volume . Each portrays a vivid, idealised "West That Never Was", at a pace that rarely slackens.

His heroes were often based on his favourite film stars, so that Dusty Fog resembled Audie Murphy, and the Ysabel Kid was an amalgam of Elvis Presley in Flaming Star and Jack Buetel in The Outlaw.

Before becoming a recluse in his last years, JT's favourite boast was that Melton Mowbray was famous for three things: "The pie, Stilton cheese and myself but not necessarily in that order".

The Ultimate Travel Guide To Munduk, North Bali

The mountains of Bali is where all the real magic hides and the winding roads leading to Munduk is where you’ll find it.

It’s calm, cool, and unlike anything, you’ll find in the crowded streets of Canggu or Ubud .

Munduk is a true hidden gem, away from the mass tourism where a more authentic side of Bali lives. There is so much peace to be found in these mountains, and the nature surrounding them is some of the most beautiful scenes on the island.

Table of Contents

Best Time to Visit Munduk

How many days do you need in munduk, how to get to munduk, where to stay in munduk, where to do yoga in munduk bali, best places to eat in munduk, top 10 things to do in munduk, book your trip to bali.

Book Your Flight The easiest way to find cheap airfares to Bali is via a flight search engine. I love using  Skyscanner to find and compare the best flight deals.

Book Your Accommodation Both Booking.com and  Agoda are my favourites as you can search a whole city or neighbourhood for the best places to stay and filter for your specific needs, like free wifi, a private pool or your favourite hotel chain.

Book Your Travel Insurance  Choosing good travel insurance is important when you plan your trip. Travel insurance protects you against falling sick while travelling, unexpected injury, theft, as well as cancellations. My favourite company to buy travel insurance from is SafetyWing , they also cover COVID-19.

Book Your Tours  Check out these  awesome tours in Bali  with my tour partner Get Your Guide.

Where most of the world has 4 seasons, Bali only has 2. There’s a wet season and a dry season with the temperature consistently hovering around 26 degrees C.

The best time to visit Munduk will be between April and September, as this is when the island receives the least amount of rainfall.

Munduk is a bit different than the rest of Bali, because it has cooler temperatures averaging between 20-25 degrees C, and rainfall is not uncommon even in the dry season.

The rainiest time of year will be between December and March, so I would recommend avoiding these months if you can!

Munduk is known to be cooler and rainier than other parts of Bali, so try to bring some extra layers and a rain jacket on your trip.

The trip to Munduk is worth it even if you only have 1 night to spare. The drive to get there is an adventure to be had in itself!

There are plenty of stops to make along the way, and even just the drive is scenic.

However, I would recommend trying to spend at least 2-3 full days in this region. Even if you stayed for 5 days, you will certainly not run out of things to do in Munduk Bali!

There is everything including temples, waterfalls, coffee plantations, and rice fields. It’s a whole other side of Bali that is worth exploring.

Munduk is located in the hills of North Bali about a 1-2 hours drive from Canggu , Seminyak , or Ubud.

The best way to get to Munduk would be to either hire a scooter or hire a private car with a driver, which is what I would personally recommend.

Scooter rentals are about 75,000 IDR (about US$ 5) per day, but if you’re not totally comfortable on a scooter then I wouldn’t recommend driving one to Munduk. The roads can be very hilly and windy in this region, so in this case, I would opt for the private driver!

A private driver for the day typically starts around 500,000 IDR (about US$ 33), but usually, that means you have them for a whole 8 hours! Especially because the weather can be a bit rainier in Munduk, it’ll be nice to have a comfortable car to sit back and relax in.

You should also take advantage of the drive and make some stops along the way. There are some famous places you’ll pass driving to Munduk like the Handara Gate or the Wanagiri Hidden Hills.

Let your driver know in advance if you’re interested in making some of these stops, and I’m sure they will be more than happy to take you there.

There are a variety of places to stay in Munduk from luxury resorts to cosy cabins, or the perfect homestay experience.

Being so high up in the mountains, Munduk Bali has villas with some of the best views on the island!

Here are some places I would highly recommend checking out when you plan your next Munduk getaway.

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa

Munduk Bali’s own resort, spa, and coffee plantation all in one!

It's become Insta-famous for its incedible views and is absolutely luxurious. If you can afford it, I highly recommend you stay here when visiting Munduk.

Munduk is full of small family-owned-style restaurants called warungs. Eating at a local warung while you’re in Bali is an absolute must!

This is where you’ll find some of the best cuisines for the best prices. Many people fear the dreaded “Bali belly”, but rest assured the places listed below I had no issues with– and they were delicious!

  • Warung Made’s Muduk: They are well-known for the cooking classes they offer, the homey atmosphere they have created, and for having some of the best food in Bali.
  • Eco Cafe 2 : This cafe is dedicated to sustainability and has great coffee. You can even try Bali’s famous Luwak coffee here!
  • Warung One Munduk: The place with the best view of the mountains while you enjoy your meal. Great prices here and food!

This part of the island is often overlooked, but in my opinion, it’s where you’ll find some of the best spots in Bali.

If you want to visit this area, but don’t know where to go in northern Bali, then make sure to include these spots on your Munduk itinerary. They are some of the best!

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

This is a must-do! It’s a bit of a drive from Munduk to get here, but once you do you’ll see why it’s well worth the trip.

It’s never-ending fields of green where you could hike for hours and the view doesn’t get old.

These rice terraces comprise over 600 hectares of rice fields, and to stand amongst them feels pretty surreal.

The best way to see the rice terraces is by e-bike. Book your tour here

Munduk Moding Plantation

You will likely see or hear about coffee plantations everywhere when you arrive in Bali and of course the famous Luwak coffee.

However, if you plan on visiting a plantation I’d recommend doing so in Munduk.

This has become a huge tourist attraction, and sometimes it’s hard to know if the palm civets, from which the coffee is partially made, are being treated ethically.

This plantation serves cruelty-free Luwak coffee, where the coffee tastes just that much better!

Puru Ulun Danu Bratan Temple

This temple is one of the most iconic, photographed temples in Bali.

Rightfully so, it's set amongst beautifully groomed gardens along the shores of Lake Bratan.

If you’re looking to see a temple in Munduk make sure you get to this one! It does get pretty busy, so try to get there earlier in the day if you’re hoping for fewer crowds.

Twin Lakes Viewpoint

This attraction is located right in Munduk, so if you’re staying here you can’t miss it!

It’s a viewpoint with a huge stone platform on the side of the road overlooking two of Bali’s most beautiful lakes.

From this vantage point, you’ll be able to see Buyan Lake to your left and Tamblingan Lake to your right. There’s some trekking to do in this area if you’re also looking to be a little more active!

Wangiri Hidden Hills

Not far from the Handara Gate is another place people love to get a good Instagram shot and where you’ll find the famous Munduk swing, Wangiri Hidden Hills.

There’s everything here from swings to human-sized bird’s nests, wooden stars, tree houses, and tons more!

If you want beautiful photos with mountainous panoramic views, this is the spot.

Handara Gate Bali

Also in North Bali is the Handara Gate, which has become one of the most Instagrammed places on the island.

People can wait up to over 2 hours just to get the famous photo in front of this gate! If this is on your bucket list like many others, I’d recommend getting there as early as possible.

You have an advantage staying in Munduk as you will be much closer than the others travelling from other parts of Bali for this photo opp!

Join this incredible Bali Instagram Highlights Tour to get all the best shots

Munduk Waterfall

Munduk waterfall is located in Munduk village and like many waterfalls up north, is special because it gets far less attention from tourists than the ones further south.

It’s just a 10-15 minute walk from the car park to get to this particular waterfall, which lies in the open without any trees for shade.

Often people visit this waterfall as part of a trek that visits 3 others as well, which I would highly recommend doing!

Sekumpul Waterfall

If you can only see one waterfall in Bali, this one should be it.

It’s a bit out of the way for many people, but the magnitude of this waterfall is something worth seeing.

Water plunges from 80m above hitting the surface with such force, that the whole area is covered in mist. It’s a pretty big hike, so be prepared for the climb back up!

Book your private trekking experience to Sekumpul Waterfall

Banyumala Twin Waterfall

There are so many waterfalls to see, but this one also makes the list!

It’s about a 20-minute trek down from the car park, and a good one to visit if you’re looking to swim.

The two waterfalls are separated only by the rocks they flow down, and they have a big pool of water at the bottom to have a nice relaxing swim.

Aling Aling Waterfall

This area has everything from cliff jumping to natural waterslides! It is a great place to spend half the day if you’re feeling more adventurous and seeking some adrenaline.

You will find 4 waterfalls in this area, Aling Aling, Kroya, Kembar, and Pucuk waterfall.

Walking between these waterfalls is easy as they’re just a couple of minutes apart.

If you’re looking to do more trekking in the area, see if you can have a guide come with you. There are many hidden gems here!

The best thing about Bali is that it has so much to offer.

From Canggu to Munduk, you will feel like you are on an entirely different island. There is something for everyone in Bali, and Munduk is a place to retreat when the hustle feels like it’s too much.

When you want to get away from the crowds and tourism, and fully immerse yourself in nature, this is the place to run to.

From the mountainous views to the hundreds of waterfalls, you’ll never be wondering what to do in Munduk Bali.

Boat Profile

In the spirit of a classic Donzi

From Issue   Small Boats Annual 2015 December 2014

B UNDUKI is a sport boat built to Australian John Georgalas’s Deep V 16′ design. Initially, the design was to be a one-off for an American friend, but the drawings have since been made available through John’s company, Classic Wooden Boat Plans (CWBP). For this design, John was inspired by the 17′ WYNN-MILL II, designed by Jim Wynn in the early 1960s. That boat was raced with great success, including a victory in the six-hour Paris Race. Wynn subsequently collaborated with Walt Walters and Don Aronow on a production version, the Ski Sporter, which was later dubbed, and became much better known as, the Sweet 16. That was the first boat built by Aronow’s company, Donzi Marine, after it was formed in 1964.

The Sweet 16 was about a foot shorter than WYNN-MILL II, and it lacked the original boat’s pronounced tumblehome aft, presumably because of the practicalities of molding it in fiberglass. At the height of production, 20 of these boats were produced each month. President Lyndon Johnson owned one, and the Israeli armed forces had a dozen of them, some of which saw action in the 1967 Six Day War.

The original brochure for the Sweet 16 described it as the “softest riding, driest high-speed sports boat ever built.” The 24-degree deadrise would have contributed to those characteristics, and this has been retained in the Deep V design, as has WYNN-MILL II’s tumblehome, which John and his American friend particularly admired.

Brian Reford, a student at Lyme Regis Boatbuilding Academy, built BUNDUKI with an eye toward wake-boarding and water-skiing. He was particularly drawn to the design’s pronounced tumblehome at the transom.

Brian Reford, a student at Lyme Regis Boatbuilding Academy, built BUNDUKI with an eye toward wake-boarding and water-skiing. He was particularly drawn to the design’s pronounced tumblehome at the transom.

I n March 2013, Brian Reford enrolled in the nine-month Boat Building, Maintenance and Support course at the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy , where he had an opportunity to build a boat for himself. He wanted one that could be used for water-skiing and wake-boarding and, after looking at “masses of designs” on the Internet, he found the Deep V and ordered a set of plans from CWBP.

Having printed the drawings full size, Brian decided there was no real need to carry out any lofting, although he later came to regret that decision. His starting point was to make the eight permanent frames—mostly ring frames to include the deckbeams, but with three hull frames in the open cockpit area, which needed temporary braces across them. The way he decided to construct them—from ¾″ red cedar, 8″ deep in the keel area but much narrower in the topsides and across the deck, and with halving joints between their various components—was quite different from the detail in the CWBP drawings. He made those changes with the guidance of his course tutors, and from then on he gradually came to rely less on the plans and more on his own instincts and the tutors’ advice, a course of action which, he later realized, allowed him to learn much more than he would otherwise have done.

BUNDUKI, built to John Georgalas’s Deep V 16’ design, is a descendant of WYNN-MILL II, a legendary raceboat that gave rise to the speedboat company Donzi Marine.

The various fore-and aft components came next: the 3″ x 2″ mahogany keel, with four laminations along the majority of its length and twelve around the stem; the spruce chine logs, which started off at 1 ¾″ x 1″ before they were beveled; and three 1 ¼″ x ½″ red cedar stringers each side on the bottom and one at the sheer. The bottom was then cold-molded with three layers of 3/16″ Robbins Elite plywood, all in the same diagonal orientation but with their joints staggered. Brian decided to turn the hull the right way up to fit the stringers and the two layers of 3/16″ ply to the topsides, not because it would be any easier to do so—although it would be in the tumblehome area aft it would be harder at the flared bow—but because it gave him the chance to first check the fairness of the chine in the forward sections by eye and make small adjustments to it.

BUNDUKI is built of three 3⁄16” layers of cold-molded plywood laid over stringers set into notched frames. The angles of the deadrise and transom almost exactly matched those of the jet ski that provided the engine.

Now it was time for Brian to turn his attention to the power unit. He could, of course, have fitted a similar type of engine to the one originally specified for the Sweet 16—a 110-hp Volvo Penta with an outdrive—but he had other ideas. Primarily for safety reasons when water-skiing, he wanted to fit a jet drive, and he decided the best way to acquire one would be to take one out of an old jet ski. He managed to find a suitable one—a Kawasaki STX 3-Person Cruiser with a three-cylinder, two-stroke 130-hp engine—on eBay. Having removed its important parts, he cut a hole in the underside of his boat, rabbeted the outside of the hull around the hole, fitted the jet unit’s flange (which had been part of the jet ski’s hull) into the rabbet, and bolted it in. Fortunately the angles of his boat’s deadrise and transom almost exactly matched those of the jet ski. He could have kept the engine and jet as one unit and fitted them into the boat together—and his course tutors encouraged him to do so—but he wanted “the engine to be part of the boat and not the jet ski,” so he fitted conventional engine beds for it.

The bottom was reinforced with 15-oz biaxial cloth, and the entire hull was then sheathed in 6-oz cloth before being filled, faired, and painted.

The bottom was reinforced with 15-oz biaxial cloth, and the entire hull was then sheathed in 6-oz cloth before being filled, faired, and painted.

But before installing the engine itself, he had more work to do on the bottom. After fitting a ¼″ plywood sub-deck and machining a 2″-wide rabbet around its perimeter, he turned the hull upside down again to allow the outside of it to be fiberglassed with 15-oz biaxial cloth over the bottom panels and then a 6-oz plain-weave cloth over the whole of the outside, around the sheer, and into the rabbet. The hull was filled, faired, and painted, and then turned the right way up again.

The visible deck is an overlay applied to a ¼” subdeck. It consists of a khaya kingplank and covering boards, and spruce planks caulked with black polysulfide.

A 3mm-thick decorative deck was then fitted. This consisted of a khaya kingplank and margins, and fore-and-aft-laid spruce planks caulked with Sikaflex and then varnished: three coats of two-pack followed by seven coats of single-pack. The dashboard and engine box top are both veneered with ash, with khaya trims and inlays. After every piece of plywood was epoxy-coated, the visible areas of the cockpit—the seat fronts, the inside of the hull, and the cockpit—were all lined with a polypropylene carpet.

On the Lyme Regis Launch Day, which is the culmination of the course, Brian christened his boat BUNDUKI, which is Swahili for “rifle,” in memory of his father, who once ran a gunsmith shop in Nairobi and who had recently died. BUNDUKI managed to get up to 38 knots that day, but when I met up with Brian six months later on a small lake adjacent to the River Thames at Pangbourne, environmental considerations would have restricted us to about 5 knots even if local by-laws didn’t.

Power is supplied by a two-stroke, 130-hp engine harvested from a Kawasaki Jet Ski.

Power is supplied by a two-stroke, 130-hp engine harvested from a Kawasaki Jet Ski.

T he principle of a jet drive is that the engine, which is always in gear, drives a large impeller, which draws water through an intake in the bottom of the boat and discharges it at high velocity through a nozzle at the stern. The “gear lever” controls a bucket which diverts the water to drive the boat forward or astern, but when the lever is in neutral the flow is downward; this often results in a very slow, somewhat disconcerting, movement of the boat. With no rudder, the wheel turns the discharge nozzle to port or starboard.

BUNDUKI’s steering system allows about one-and-a-half turns hard-over to hard-over. This differs from jet skis, which have bike-type handlebars. At very slow forward speeds, BUNDUKI is difficult to steer in a straight line. However, steering became noticeably easier at about 5 knots, and Brian told me that at higher speeds it isn’t an issue at all. She is very easy to turn: At slow speeds with the wheel held hard over she will just keep going round in a circle in her own length, and Brian said that she “banks massively” when turning at top speed. When going astern, however, she takes a long time to respond to any turn of the wheel. The engine sounds a bit rough when it’s ticking over, but at slightly higher rpm it is much smoother, albeit with a deep throaty roar. With the whole timber hull acting like an acoustic musical instrument, it sounds very different from a jet ski. Brian thinks that the 55-liter fuel tank located under the foredeck will provide “just a few hours’ playing and that’s it; it isn’t very economical, but it’s a toy, so you’ve got to look past that.” He advances a similar argument to justify his tolerance to the high-speed noise levels.

Nigel Sharp is a lifelong sailor and a freelance marine writer and photographer. He spent 35 years in managerial roles in the boat building and repair industry and has logged thousands of miles in boats big and small, from dinghies to schooners.

You can see BUNDUKI at speed in a video posted on the Boat Building Academy’s Facebook page.

The Deep V 16’ is similar to the legendary Donzi Sweet 16 model, which in turn was a development of WYNN-MILL II. The Sweet 16, however, did away with the alluring tumblehome—presumably to ease production. Designer John Georgalas has revived the shapely hull in the Deep V 16’.

Plans for the Deep V 16 are available from Classic Wooden Boat Plans . The cost for the set is US $195. Plans are supplied as PDF files, which buyers must have printed.

This article is great! Keep them coming. This is the type of article that will attract more and younger people to building wooden boats. This type of wooden boat plays into a completely different market than you have been trying to attract. I am pretty sure this market is much bigger than you think.

A job very well done! Congratulations, and thanks for the article. I very much fancy a Wyn-Mill II, but without as much tumblehome. It would be great with a Volvo 4-cylinder diesel, say a D3-170, and drive leg!

There is a reference to regret about not lofting, but do the plans come with a full table of offsets? If the plans do not come with a full set of offsets, any clarification on whether the reference is to some intermediate step like using battens to make sure lines taken off the full size plans are fair as transferred to frames?

I forwarded the questions to John Georgalas at Classic Wooden Boat Plans. Here’s his reply: “All of the frames are included in the plans as full-size patterns. They’re saved as PDF files, so all the builder needs is a Kinko’s nearby for printing. All frames have notches premarked so fairing is easy. The height above baseline is also provided. Lofting really isn’t necessary unless the builder wants to change the overall shape or size. We’re happy to offer advice and help. Just send us an email. We provide free changes to all plans sold, mostly buyer-requested custom dash boards or engine beds. One builder, Stu Stocker, wanted a transom to suit an Alpha One leg and engine beds to fit a standard V-6 Mercruiser. We adapted the plans for him and the combination he chose to power his boat worked very well. It puts it up on a plane very quickly.” Christopher Cunningham, Editor

Introduction

Since 1997, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DROC; formerly called Zaire) has been rent by ethnic strife and civil war, touched off by a massive inflow in 1994 of refugees from the fighting in Rwanda and Burundi. The government of former president MOBUTU Sese Seko was toppled by a rebellion led by Laurent KABILA in May 1997; his regime was subsequently challenged by a Rwanda- and Uganda-backed rebellion in August 1998. Troops from Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Chad, and Sudan intervened to support the Kinshasa regime. A cease-fire was signed on 10 July 1999 by the DROC, Zimbabwe, Angola, Uganda, Namibia, Rwanda, and Congolese armed rebel groups, but sporadic fighting continued. KABILA was assassinated on 16 January 2001 and his son Joseph KABILA was named head of state ten days later. In October 2002, the new president was successful in negotiating the withdraw of occupying Rwandan forces from eastern Congo; two months later, the Pretoria Accord was signed by all remaining warring parties to end the fighting and set up a government of national unity. A transitional government was set up in July 2003; Joseph KABILA remains as president and is joined by four vice presidents from the former government, former rebel camps, and the political opposition.
