And, while the grounds are free to have a ramble around, there’s also a paid tour that you can take, but more on that in a minute.

Below, you’ll find info on everything from the history of Trinity College in Dublin and what there is to see to the tours and more.

Although a visit to Trinity College in Dublin is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Trinity College’s central location makes it perfect for quick and easy visits. Situated just south of the Liffey and to the immediate east of the popular Temple Bar, the college is easily accessible by public transport – the Luas Green line stops right outside the College Green entrance and most city centre buses have a stop nearby.

2. Ireland’s highest ranked university

Trinity College isn’t just Ireland’s highest-ranked university, it’s one of the finest in the world and is just a hair’s breadth outside of the global top 100 (it’s ranked joint 101st). It’s also the 17th most international university, attracting a hugely diverse number of applicants and students.

3. Home to a heap of history

Founded way back in the 16th century, the college has seen a ton of changes unfold within its walls and outside them over the course of its 400+ year history. From significant political developments to some of Ireland’s most well-known public figures making their mark here, there are endless stories to tell.

4. Plenty to see and do

While it might be a living and breathing university for its students, Trinity College leads a double life as a popular Dublin attraction, and there are loads to check out. From its pleasant greens to the Book of Kells and the stunning library, you can definitely pass a few hours in this elegant quarter of the capital.

The history of Trinity College

trinity dublin college

Though Trinity College has a long history, it wasn’t actually the first university in Dublin. Founded in 1320 by the Pope, the Medieval University of Dublin was the city’s first attempt at establishing a university in the city and while it lasted a couple of hundred years, it was ended by Henry VIII’s Reformation.

Created by a royal charter

Trinity College Dublin was created by royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1592 amid the thought that it would bring prestige to Ireland at a time when many other European countries were also founding important centres of education.

The new university was to be built on the former site of All Hallows monastery to the southeast of the city walls, where Trinity College still stands today.

Growth years and religious questions

The 18th century was when Dublin started to see Trinity College emerge as a significant part of the city and many of its grand buildings were constructed alongside the elegant green and parks.

Following the Reformation, this time period in Britain and Ireland was an era of ascendancy for Protestants and for many years, Catholics were not allowed to join the university. It was only in 1793 that Catholics were finally allowed admission to Trinity College, but even then, they were not allowed to be elected to Scholarship, Fellowship or be made a Professor.

Finally, in 1873, all religious tests were abolished, although Catholic Bishops themselves encouraged Catholics not to attend due to the university’s protestant history.

The 20th and 21st centuries

An important development kickstarted the 20th century as women were admitted to Trinity College as full members for the first time in 1904. Another huge event took place just over a decade later, as the 1916 Easter Rising engulfed Dublin, and the university was lucky to escape unscathed. In fact, many of the discussions about what an Irish Free State would look like took place at Trinity in the aftermath of 1916.

The true growth in student numbers at the university began in 1970 when the Catholic Church relaxed its policy on Catholics attending Trinity College, and this led to new courses and buildings, especially in sciences and computing.

Now in the 21st century, Trinity is an iconic part of Dublin enjoyed by visitors and students alike.

Things to do at Trinity College

One of the reasons that Trinity is one of the most popular places to visit in Dublin is due to the sheer volume of things there are to see and do.

Below, you’ll find info on everything from the Book of Kells and the general architecture to the Long Room and more.

1. See the Book of Kells

Top of most visitors lists when they visit Trinity College is this extraordinary book , and believe me when I tell you it isn’t like other books! Dating back to the 9th century, the Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book written entirely in Latin. Though to be honest, just saying the word ‘illuminated’ doesn’t quite do justice to just how elaborate this ancient book is.

Made from high-quality calf vellum and extending to a total of 680 pages, some of the pages contain colourful, ornate illustrations of various religious figures and symbols that appear either by themselves or alongside the text.

2. Visit the Long Room

the long room trinity college

Put any library interior up against the Long Room inside the Library of Trinity College, and I’d say most would pale in comparison – this is Dublin architecture at its finest.

Yes, there’s a touch of hubris within that statement, but I stand by it! Three hundred years old and 65 metres long, there’s a good reason why the Long Room is one of the most photographed rooms in Dublin.

Admire its elegant wooden structure and how it’s lined with marble busts of prominent writers, philosophers and supporters of the college. The Long Room is also the longest single-chamber library in the world, housing some 200,000 books and including one of the last remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

3. Grab a coffee and wander around the grounds

cafe nearby

The leafy grounds of Trinity College are some of the prettiest in Dublin and it goes without saying that you should spend a bit of time just strolling around exploring them. Whether it’s before or after your visit to the Library, it doesn’t really matter as there’s no rush on this particular activity.

And since the university is located at the bottom of Grafton Street, it’s a short walk from some of the best coffee shops in Dublin .

4. Drop into The Douglas Hyde Gallery

Focusing on artists who push at the boundaries of form and convention and who also might be overlooked or marginalised, The Douglas Hyde is one of the more popular art galleries in Dublin , and you’ll find it at Trinity College’s Nassau Street Gate.

If you’re feeling inspired by the art inside the Book of Kells then this could be the place for you! First opened in 1978, the gallery has showcased work by significant  Irish artists such as Sam Keogh, Kathy Prendergast and Eva Rothschild and also brought well-regarded international artists to Ireland for the first time too, including Marlene Dumas, Gabriel Kuri and Alice Neel.

Places to visit near Trinity College

One of the beauties of the Trinity College tour is that, when you’re finished, you’re a short walk from many of the best things to do in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from Trinity (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Irish Whiskey Museum

Trinity College developed some of Ireland’s finest minds (Oscar Wilde, for example) and just a stone’s throw from the university you can learn all about another of Ireland’s most well-known exports. Opened in 2014 and independent of any distillery, the Irish Whiskey Museum offers visitors the opportunity to taste and experience a huge selection of Irish Whiskey.

2. Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

If Dublin Castle doesn’t really resemble a traditional castle in the way you might see one in a movie, that’s because the cylindrical Record Tower is the only remaining remnant of the old Medieval castle. It’s a fascinating place, though and was the seat of British power in Ireland until it was handed over to Michael Collins and the Provisional Government of Ireland in 1922.

3. Endless attractions in the city

With its handy central location, there are loads of other Dublin attractions to check out within a short walk or a tram or taxi ride. Whether you want to learn about the city’s most famous export at the Guinness Storehouse or go for a bucolic stroll through St Stephen’s Green , there’s plenty of entertaining directions to head when you’re leaving from Trinity College.

4. Food and trad bars

Why see Trinity Colleg Dublin and the Book of Kells

There are many reasons to visit this historic campus.

The Book of Kells is a unique medieval manuscript famous worldwide for its intricate and stunning decorations.

The Long Room, Trinity College Dublin’s old library, is one of the most beautiful in the country and holds one of the few remaining copies of the Irish Declaration of Independence.

The Long Room houses one of the most ancient harps of Ireland, now the symbol of the country.

The campus as a whole is architecturally significant and enjoyable to visit for tourists thanks to its pleasant outdoor spaces.

A visit to Trinity College takes 1-2 hours. The Book of Kells Exhibition and the Long Room require about 45 minutes.

Please note that no photography is allowed inside the exhibition.

What is the Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is a Medieval manuscript and one of the treasures of Ireland.

The manuscript is in Latin and contains the four canonical gospels and it is based on their Vulgata text by St Jerome, dating from 384AD.

As well as the Gospel texts, the Book of Kells also has other pieces of writing including canon tables, Breves Causae (summaries of the gospel stories), and Argumenta (prefaces characterizing the evangelists.

The Book of Kells is written on calfskin (vellum), 340 folios and measures 330 x 255 mm.

The Book of Kells is written in elaborately decorated writing called Insular Majuscule, which is a formal type of script that originated in Ireland.

Historians cannot agree on the date of the Book of Kells. However, the dominant academic opinion currently attaches the book two the Monastery of Iona and that of Kells and believe the book dates from the IX century AD.

The Book of Kells is stunning as well as significant. The writing is wonderfully elaborate, with letters and pages carefully decorated with a meticulous depiction of plants and religious symbols.

Each page is a work of art: the book contains the portraits of some of the evangelists and drawings of elaborate narrative scenes, which are among the earliest medieval documents of the kind ever found.

The Chi Rho page (folio 34r), introducing Matthew’s account of the nativity, is the single most famous page in medieval art.

There is no agreement on the number of authors of the book, but academics believe there were three main hands at work for the decorated pages and four scribes. The book is visually stunning and uses several pigments, including red and yellow, for decorative purposes.

Despite the detailed look of the book, its writing is careless. Philologists have noticed how several pages repeat themselves and often, the scribe’s eye skipped letters of entire words. This led them to believe the book was probably for ceremonial use rather than daily reading.

What else to see in Trinity College

Trinity College Campus has several buildings and area worth seeing.

The Long Room

The Long Room is the old Library of Trinity College and one of the country’s most beautiful and significant libraries.

Trinity College Long Room Library

Located on the floor immediately above the Book of lels Exhibition, the Long Room has been in use since 1732 and hosts over 200 000 books: since 1801 the Library has the right to claim a free copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland.

The library is a sight to behold. The room is 65 meters long and has a vaulted ceiling From top to bottom, the walls are covered in dark wooden bookcases filled to the brim with leather-bound books. The long room has side chambers filled with light streaming in from large windows, giving the whole room a cathedral feel.

The room is dotted with 14 sculpted marble busts of philosophers, writers of the western world and men connected with Trinity College Dublin, including that of Jonathan Swift.

The library also houses one of the few remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic ead outside the General Post Office on 24 April 1916 by Patrick Pearse. The Long Room also has what is believed to be the oldest harps in Ireland, dating from the 15th century and a symbol of the country.

Trinty College front square and campanile

The front square of Trinity College is where you find some of the most historical and significant buildings on campus including the Dining Hall, Examination Hall, Front Gate and Campanile.

Front square in Trinity College Dublihn Campus

Many of these are only accessible to visitors on special occasions.

As you walk inside the Trinity College Campus, you will notice the main Trinity Campanile, one of the most photographed spots in the city.

The campanile dates from 1853 and is a bell tower: one of the college traditions says students who pass under it while the bell tolls fail their exams: many pass under it after graduations only, to mark the end of their college journey.

Provost’s House

only open to the public on specific occasions, this building dates from 1759 and has one of the most elaborately decorated interiors of its time.

Trinity sports fields

The Trinity sports fields do not hold any special interest in terms of sightseeing but they are a great place for a rest and tapping into college atmospheres in summer especially.

Located at the back of the campus, in summer it is where many students hang out also thanks to the presence of a small cafe. If you are looking for an outdoor break with college students and tourists this is a great place!

Visiting Trinity College and the Book of Kells with kids

Trinity College Dublin is one of the easiest places to visit in Dublin with kids.

The campus is free to acces, car-free and perfect for small children to safely run around.

The Book of kells is unlikely to hold interest for small kids; however, I recommend you bring your school-age kids to see the Book of Kells and Trinity College library as they are impressive and there are educational materials for them to play and engage with it.

Before you go, I recommend you head to the education section of the Book of Kells Exhibition Website , where you can find children’s videos and downloadable materials to help them engage with the book and the library before and after the visit.

We also got hold of a coloring and sticker book from the souvenir shop.

This helped made the kids excited about the visit and helped us reinforce what they had learned once back home, when we all sat down to color (this is also a great rainy day activity if you need to pass a few hours in your hotel or anyway indoors waiting for the rain to pass!)

The Book of Kells Exhibition is stroller friendly.

How to Visit the Library of Trinity College Dublin

A long, symmetrical room entices your eyes, creating an illusion that there is no end to these massive walls. Day and artificial lights seem to also be overwhelmed by the size of the room. Unable to unveil centuries-old secrets of the Long Room of the Trinity College Library , they settle for a rather humble visit.

But even in this dim light, you can see books. A great amount of them. In fact, there are so many books that they fill all the shelves that align the tall walls.

This was my first virtual visit to the Long Room of the Trinity College Library in Dublin . I wasn’t looking for any specific pictures to inspire my first trip to the capital of Ireland . But, frankly, they came in handy. Once I laid my eyes on the photos of the Library of Trinity College Dublin, I knew I had to visit it sooner or later.

Meet Trinity College Dublin

Fast forward a few weeks and I marched straight to Trinity College in attempt to see its famous library on my first day in Dublin. Despite the early morning hours, the place was packed.

Tourists, impressed by the size and opulent architecture of Trinity College, gathered in the main square. Just arrived college students were hurriedly leaving the maddening crowds behind and streaming in different directions of the campus.

After admiring the main square for a few more minutes, I followed their lead.

Visit Trinity College Dublin

Founded in 1592, Trinity College Dublin is one of the oldest universities in Western Europe. Its creation came in time when European cities strived for prestige and significance that would be bestowed on them upon the establishment of their own universities. For Ireland and Dublin, having its own university also meant an alignment with European school system and weakening of English control over the country.

Interestingly enough, Queen Elizabeth I, often called “the mother of a university”, founded the college. The royalty modeled the new establishment after the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Sadly, only one college, the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin, was built in the city.

The long official name of the institution, however, never gained popularity. Even today, both locals and visitors stick to the shorter names, such as Trinity College or University of Dublin.

Not being particularly popular, the early establishment occupied only a small part of today’s Front Square. The place set outside the walls of the city. As Dublin grew, it slowly swallowed the university, positioning it in the center of the city.

Today Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest surviving university, occupies 47 acres (190,000 square meters). It is recognized as one of the seven ancient universities of Great Britain and Ireland and one of the top academic institutions in Europe .

Library of Trinity College Dublin

One thing that differentiated Trinity College Dublin from other European newly-established universities was its eagerness and urgency of assembling its own library. Although the Library of Trinity College Dublin didn’t have its own space until the beginning of the 18th century, its collection started to grow almost instantly.

In 1661, Henry Jones presented the library with the Book of Kells. Up to this day, this ancient manuscript is one of the reasons why many people visit the Trinity College Library in the first place. In 1801, the library received legal deposit rights, allowing it to hold a copy of every book published in Ireland.

It was only a matter of time for such devotion and love for books to take shape in several buildings. Six of these library establishments are located on the Trinity College campus.

Visit the Old Library of Trinity College

While all the library buildings hold impressive book collections, the Old Library is the highlight of the visit to Trinity College Dublin.

The construction of the building started in 1712 and lasted twenty years. At the time of its completion, it was one of the tallest buildings on the campus. You can hardly notice the large scale of the Old Library when visiting Trinity College Dublin nowadays. Other structures of similar size surround the building, making it less profound from outside.

The interior, however, unveils the unprecedented character of the most famous library in the country. Even J.K. Rowling couldn’t resist it, using the Library of Trinity College Dublin as an inspiration for Hogwarts in Harry Potter .

The Long Room

The highlight of the visit to the Old Library is the Long Room. Home to 200,000 books and manuscripts, this 65-meter-long chamber impresses with an old charm and the 19th-century decor.

With its barrel-vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling bookcases, the Long Room is rather dark. The natural light penetrates into the chamber through large windows. But trapped between the endless book shelves, the sun rays lose almost all their power by the time they make halfway through the room.

Dublin - Roads and Destinations

Fortunately, 14 white marble busts create a welcoming resonance, allowing for more light inside to the obvious delight of all those who visit the Long Room of the Library of Trinity College Dublin for the first time. Lining the chamber, these sculptures help your eyes adjust to the dim light quicker.

Once the overall darkness of the room ceases to bother the visitors of the Trinity College Library, the busts present themselves in full glory. The marble faces of great philosophers and writers of the Western World suddenly become your silent guides. With their strong connections with Trinity College Dublin, you can’t ask for the more knowledgeable companions.

The Book of Kells

While the Long Room entices with the Brian Boru Harp and one of the last remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic , the Book of Kells always steals the show.

The finest example of the illuminated manuscript dates back to 800 AD. It contains the four Gospels of the New Testament with such opulent illustrations and ornamentations that surpass those in other Insular Gospel books.

The Book of Kells has been one the most cherished possession of the Trinity College Library since 1661. The manuscript first appeared on display only in the 19th century. To this day, thousands of tourists visit the Trinity College Library in attempt to see this ancient book.

Getting to Trinity College

Due to its central location, you can visit the Trinity College Library while exploring other landmarks of the city. Although Dublin’s public transport functions well, I would recommend exploring the center of the city on foot. Moreover, Trinity College Dublin is just a short walk away from Temple Bar and the famous Ha’penny Bridge.

Hi, if I understand correctly, the admission fee is 18€ for the both of them and only for 30 minutes, which I find quite expensive. Is it possible to buy a ticket only for the old library (without the book of Kells)?

I’m afraid you have to pay for both, even if you don’t want to see the Book of Kells. There are discounts for students and seniors. I used my California student ID to purchase the ticket. When it comes to the time inside the library, I definitely took my sweet time and spent more than 30 minutes. Nobody rushed me out or checked what time I entered the library.

Trinity College in Dublin: The Complete Guide

How to explore Ireland's most famous university and the Book of Kells

Trinity College Dublin

Trinity College is the oldest university in Ireland that is still in operation today. The historic college is an unmissable part of the Dublin landscape and sits right in the center of the city. Its hallowed halls have educated some of Ireland’s most famous figures over more than 400 years of distinguished operation.

From its history to its must-see sights, here is your guide to visiting Trinity College in Dublin.

Trinity College has been a part of higher education in Ireland for centuries but it is not technically Ireland’s oldest university. The Medieval College of Dublin was established in 1320, but closed down due to lack of funds and changing political pressures during the Protestant Reformation.

Founded in 1592, Trinity College has its own ties to the Reformation. The college was established on the site of a former monastery by royal charter by Queen Elizabeth to stop the Irish from being “infected with popery and other ill qualities” at universities in Italy, Spain and France.

Starting in 1637, Catholics were banned from attending Trinity, a ban which stayed in place until the Catholic Relief Act of 1793. However, bans can go both ways and even though Catholic students were technically allowed in, they were never allowed to achieve the same recognition as scholars. Because of these rules, the Catholic Church retaliated and banned its faithful from enrolling at Trinity until 1970.

These days, Trinity College is the most prestigious university in Ireland and has a student body of all genders and religions.

Famous Graduates

Many famous scholars have roamed the halls of Trinity in the 400 years since the college first opened its doors. Some of the most notable graduates are Nobel-prize winners Ernest Walton (physics) and Samuel Beckett (literature). In addition to Beckett, other world-renowned authors who studied at Trinity include Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and Bram Stoker.

Trinity has also educated famous Irish politicians including the first president of Ireland, Douglas Hyde, as well as Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, who also both served as presidents of Ireland. And though Trinity was first known for its Anglican leanings, some of the most important figures in the fight for Ireland’s independence were also educated here. That includes Theobald Wolfe Tone who graduated with a degree in law in 1786 and went on to lead an Irish rebellion; as did Robert Emmet who studied here but then led the 1803 revolt.

Trinity College offers official tours of the campus to learn about the history, experience the modern day-to-day life of Trinners (slang for Trinity College students), tour the celebrated library, as well as to see the university’s most famous attractions: the Book of Kells.

The Trinity College Library is a deposit library, which means that it has a copy of every book printed in Ireland. It is also entitled to a copy of any book printed in the United Kingdom — all free of charge. Over the years, the library has amassed a collection of more than 5 million volumes.

The most famous of all, however, is undoubtedly the priceless Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is one of the most important illuminated manuscripts in the world. The book was created in the 9th century by Irish monks who wrote elaborately scrolled text and created detailed decorations on each page of the four gospels included in the calf-skin book. Only two pages from each of the two volumes are on display at any time, but it is an essential stop on any Dublin itinerary. The book has been on display in Trinity’s Old Library since 1661.

While most people have to take a tour, or buy a ticket, to see the Book of Kells, one of the many perks of studying at Trinity is that students are allowed to visit the celebrated manuscript as much as they would like — free of charge.

However, there is a plus side to being a visitor instead of a student. There is an old superstition that says any student who walks under the bell tower while the bell is tolling will fail their exams. That means the beautiful campanile is usually free of crowds — except on graduation day when the graduates (who have now passed all their tests) march underneath it.

If you would like to explore the campus on your own, the main entrance is the most impressive and opens onto Front Square. However, you can also access the campus from Nassau Street and through the entrance off of Lincoln Place.

What Else to Do Nearby

Trinity College is truly in the heart of Dublin and there is plenty to do nearby. First, head to the National Gallery to admire the extensive collection which includes works by Rembrandt and Diego Velazquez. After taking in the art, stroll along Merrion Square , where you can see the most impressive examples of Georgian architecture in the city.

The award-winning and thought-provoking Science Gallery is also nearby, or you can head up Grafton Street to experience the liveliest shopping area in Dublin. Otherwise, unwind with a pint and some live Irish music at O’Donoghue’s — one of the best pubs in the Irish capital .

The most important part of your visit is to explore the Trinity College Library and its Book of Kells exhibit. Also known as the Great Gospel of Saint Colomba, this book is a manuscript illustrated with ornamental motifs. It was made by monks of Celtic culture around the year 800 and is considered a masterpiece of Irish Christianity and Irish-Saxon art.

Despite its incompleteness, it is one of the most sumptuous illuminated manuscripts to have survived from the Middle Ages. Many specialists consider it to be one of the most remarkable vestiges of medieval religious art, due in particular to its great beauty and the excellent technique of its finishing.

Access to the university gardens is free of charge .

However, you will have to pay an entrance fee to visit the Book of Kells and its exhibition, and at the same time the Old Library of Trinity College. Here are the rates for visiting Trinity College:

  • Children under 12 years old : free

Trinity College

Image of Parliament Square, Trinity College, Dublin

  • Family friendly

Trinity College Dublin was created by royal charter in 1592 and modelled after the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Originally lying some distance east of the walled city, on the site of the former Priory of All Hallows, Trinity College is now in the heart of Dublin, opposite the historic Parliament House.

Ireland's highest ranked university, Trinity College is also one of Dublin’s most popular visitor attractions, due in equal measure to its history and stunning architecture.

The main entrance at College Green boasts a magnificent front arch and wooden doorway. As you emerge from it, the cobbled Parliament Square opens out before you with the Campanile, or bell tower, in the centre, flanked by stone buildings featuring arched doorways and Doric columns. Amongst them is the Old Library Building, home to the Book of Kells, one of Ireland's greatest cultural treasures. Learn all about the famous medieval manuscript handcrafted over 1,000 years ago, witness the book’s exquisite colours and intricate illuminations and then visit the magnificent Long Room, home to 250,000 of Ireland’s oldest books and historical documents.

Trinity College Dublin Questions & Answers

can you visit trinity college dublin

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to just visit the library at Trinity College, or will I be required to purchase a ticket to the Book of Kells exhibit just to get inside?

can you visit trinity college dublin

You definitely have to purchase a ticket to see the library. The book of Kells is housed in the same building as the library. Essentially, you walk through the book of Kells exhibit and upstairs to the library. Definitely worth going to both.

You can pre-purchase tickets online for adults 14 euro, and concessions are 12 euro. this is a fast track ticket and promises no lines. Alternatively, you can buy at the door: adults are 11 euro and concession is 9 euros, but you just have to line up and wait. If you want more information visit the website for Trinity College Dublin. They have a tab for Book of Kells, and you can purchase any tickets there.

can you visit trinity college dublin

the queue moves quickly and it is worth the entrance fee . I was told by a local that if you get in the line/queue about a half hour before closing, they will let you in without a charge. So if cost is an issue, give this a try.

I would recommend doing the Trinity College tour, led by actual students. They drop you off at the library at the end of the tour and you can join the queue to enter the Book of Kells exhibit (and then the old library at the end). We really enjoyed hearing about the history of the college and some of the unique customs they have. You can get tour tickets just inside the main gate and the price (Euro 13) includes the Book of Kells and library.

can you visit trinity college dublin

14 Things To Do in Dublin, Ireland On a Long Layover With AerLingus

Utilizing a long layover is one of the best traveler hacks out there. With AerLingus offering most flights with a stopover in Dublin, if you're going to stop there anyway, you might as well leave the airport and get some exploring in. Dublin is a relatively small city, and with even just one day, you can tick a few things off of your Irish bucket list. Here are 10 recommended things to do on a long layover in Dublin with AerLingus.

UPDATE: 2023/05/12 13:37 EST BY KHYATI DAND

More Things To Do in Dublin, Ireland On a Long Layover With AerLingus

It can be very hard to kill time on long layovers but that's not something travelers flying to Dublin have to worry about. With the entire city at one's disposal, long layovers in Dublin are an excellent way to explore the Irish capital. This list was updated to include more things that travelers can do on stopovers in Dublin when flying with AerLingus.

See The Book Of Kells At The Trinity College Library

The Library of Trinity College in Dublin is one of the oldest libraries in Ireland and nothing will make time fly by quicker than the dark aisles of its 16th-century reading halls. The library has over 7,000,000 volumes of books on its shelves but if there's one thing that visitors must see, it's the Book of Kells -- the four Latin Gospel manuscripts dating back to the 9th century. No matter the time of the year, the library always has at least one volume on display for the public to see.

Catch A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

Flights can get pretty darn tiring. Oftentimes, there's very little energy left for anything exciting on a layover, let alone exploring an entirely new city . In that case, hop-on hop-off bus tours offer visitors an excellent means through which to see Dublin without much physical exertion on their part. Simply catch an open-top double-decker bus, grab a seat in a corner, and watch Dublin's top attractions pass by as you listen to audio guides for context.

Get A Taste Of Irish Food

What better way to spend a layover in Dublin than to eat your way through the Irish capital? Food blogger Ketty Quigley's Delicious Dublin Tours take visitors on a three-hour walking trip around the city with stops at plenty of famous eateries in between. As local experts tell tales of Dublin's food history, visitors will not only taste the best of local Irish food, but they will also learn of its past and present. These tours operate regardless of the weather in the notoriously temperamental capital.

Hop Onto A Viking Splash Tour

Long layovers in Dublin are one thing if you're alone or in the company of a fellow adult, but finding entertainment can be a far more tedious task when traveling with kids. A Viking Splash Tour is an excellent adrenaline-filled activity -- and an incredibly unique one at that -- for both adults and kids to take part in when in Dublin. The tours take place on a restored World War II amphibious vehicle that functions much like a bus on the roads but transforms into a boat as it mightily glides into the Grand Canal Dock, splashing passengers on board with the cold waters of the canal.

Drink At Temple Bar

What visit to Ireland is complete without a proper pint of Guinness? Head to the place that does it best, and arguably the most famous bar in not only Dublin but all of Ireland: Temple Bar Pub. Not to be confused with the neighborhood that is called Temple Bar, Temple Bar Pub is an infamous landmark pub with the traditional bright red exterior, welcoming you in to have a pint or two.

Dublin Castle

Despite popular belief, there's a lot more to do in Dublin than just drinking. Ireland is home to several castles, and Dublin Castle is one of the finest . Having been built in the thirteen century, Dublin Castle has since served as home to English and British administration. In 1922, Dublin Castle was given to the Irish government, where it now serves as a popular tourist hotspot. For an entry fee of about 8 euros, you can head inside and see the collection of art, as well as take in the majestic red velour and gold-plated interior.

Chester Beatty

Within the confines of Dublin Castle is what Lonely Planet has described as one of the best museums in Europe: Chester Beatty. Also known as Chester Beatty Library, this museum is home to the collections of Sir Chester Alfred Beatty, a philanthropist and mining magnate who was given the title "King of Copper" due to his fortune. The collections at Chester Beatty include but are not limited to Arabic treatises on religion, Western manuscripts, pieces from Persian poets, and even Japanese art.

Shop At George's Street Arcade

Looking to get a little shopping in on your long layover in Dublin? George's Street Arcade is one of the best places in the city of Dublin to do so. Centrally located close to other major tourist spots, George's Street Arcade has shops ranging from Brazilian-made fashion at Carnaval to Mystic Ireland Crystals. There are also plenty of eateries on site, like the top-rated vegan burgers at Flip Burgers and proper wine and cheese at Loose Canon.

Take A Guinness Brewery Tour

Back to booze because, hey, it is Ireland, after all. Aside from Irish whiskey, the most popular alcoholic beverage in Ireland is Guinness. The Irish take their Guinness seriously. There's a craft behind pouring each one which amplifies the overall taste. If you're curious to know the art behind this extremely popular beer, head to the Guinness Brewery for a tour.

Visit Jameson Distillery

If you're more into whiskey, or better yet, if you want to add a second boozy adventure to your layover in Dublin, the Jameson Distillery is a great addition to your activities. Learn the history behind one of the most popular Irish whiskeys in the world. Created in 1780 by John Jameson, the long-standing tradition behind making Jameson can now be experienced as a tourist. The tour options range from a simple visit to cocktail classes.

See Local Music At Whelan's

Who doesn't love a good Irish folk band? While you are bound to find live music at pretty much any pub in the city, Whelan's is one of the best. You can check out their calendar on their website to see who's playing, and it's recommended to book a table in advance since this place quickly fills up. Enjoy a beverage while listening to some classical local Irish music.

Drink High Tea On A Vintage Bus

Are you less interested in whiskey and stouts and more interested in feeling posh with a cup of tea in hand? There are many tours to book in Ireland , but one of the more unique experiences in Dublin offered on GetYourGuide is a high-tea tour while riding on a vintage bus . Priced at about $50 per person, a high-tea tour in Dublin is a fun way to experience the city from a double-decker bus that's been refurbished to be its fanciest self. The tour comes with food options, including those that are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free friendly.

Cross Ha'Penny Bridge

The Ha'Penny Bridge is a pedestrian bridge located in central Dublin. It was built in May 1816 over the River Liffey and remains a popular tourist attraction to this date. Its central location is close to the popular Temple Bar neighborhood, and the best part about ticking Ha'Penny Bridge off of your bucket list during a short layover is that it's only going to take a few minutes to see it.

Free Walking Tour

One of the best ways to quickly explore any city while learning a bit about its history is by taking a free walking tour . Explore Dublin by foot, see plenty of major tourist hot spots, and learn the history through a local tour guide, all for zero cost. The tour is offered several times a day, meaning it's likely you can fit it into your Dublin layover regardless of what time you land.

Students in Ireland and Switzerland Join Gaza Protest Wave

DUBLIN (Reuters) -Students at Trinity College Dublin and Lausanne University in Switzerland have staged occupations to protest against Israel's war in Gaza, joining a wave of demonstrations sweeping U.S. campuses.

In Dublin, students built an encampment on Friday that forced the university to restrict campus access on Saturday and close the Book of Kells exhibition, one of Ireland's top tourist attractions.

The camp was set up after the students' union said it had been fined 214,000 euros ($230,000) by the university for losses caused by protests in recent months, not exclusively over Gaza. The protesters were demanding that Trinity cut academic ties with Israel and divest from companies with ties to Israel.

War in Israel and Gaza

Students' union president Laszlo Molnarfia posted a photograph of benches piled up at the entrance to the building housing the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript created by Celtic monks in about 800 AD.

Trinity College said it had restricted access to students, staff and residents to ensure safety, and that the exhibition would be closed on Saturday.

More than 34,600 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s seven-month-old assault on the Gaza Strip, say health officials in the Hamas-ruled enclave. The war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and abducting 252 others, of whom 133 are believed to remain in captivity in Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

Pro-Palestinian protests have also been held at universities in Australia and Canada.

In Lausanne, around 100 students occupied a building to back demands including an end to scientific cooperation with Israel.

"Palestinians have been dying for over 200 days, but we're not being heard," one protester told Swiss television on Saturday.

"Now there's a global movement to get governments to take action, but it's not happening. That's why we want to get universities involved now."

The university said the occupation could continue until Monday provided it did not disrupt work on campus.

"We universities are not called upon to take political stands," the university's rector, Frederic Herman, told RTS radio.Last week, the head of Trinity College, Linda Doyle, said it was reviewing  its investments but that it was for individual academics to decide whether to work with Israeli institutions.

Clare Daly praises pro-Palestinian students protesting at Dublin's Trinity College

Referencing the anti-Vietnam War protests that swept US universities in the 1960s and 70s she said the Trinity were proudly standing in that tradition

  • 06:00, 6 MAY 2024

Irish MEP Clare Daly was accused of spreading Russian propaganda by an Ukranian government security council

MEP Clare Daly has praised pro-Palestinian students who set up a protest encampment at Dublin's Trinity College and claimed they are making history.

The independent MEP also compared their actions to the Vietnam protests of the 1970s.

In a speech she said their actions, which are aimed at breaking Trinity’s investment and academic ties with Israel, will “change history”.

The protests have led to the university being off limits to the public and has meant that the historic Book of Kells cannot be viewed by tourists who booked to see it.

The entrance to the world-famous exhibit was barricaded by protesters leading to accusations that those involved are aping the actions of students in American universities over the past few weeks.

Addressing the protesting students Ms Daly said: “You really are an absolute inspiration. It just makes me so proud, actually quite emotional to see what you have done.”

She said she realised that those involved are putting their future careers on the line by staging the protest.

She added: “Because what you have done is what the political leaders, business leaders, what the ‘so called’ adults in Ireland and other societies should be doing.

“They haven’t got half the brass neck or the balls that ye have and it is so desperately needed.”

Referencing the anti-Vietnam War protests that swept US universities in the 1960s and 70s she said the Trinity were proudly standing in that tradition.

She said: “The truth is that the genocide convention says that not only do you have an obligation not to commit genocide yourself but if you are a signatory to that convention you have an onus to prevent and punish genocide in others.

“Not only has the European Union and United States not done that in silence, they have actually enabled and supported that, is the level of their complicity.

“They are drenched in the blood of innocent Palestinians.”

The MEP also referred to the armament of Israel by the UK, US and Germany as well as Ireland’s exporting of restricted dual-use goods to Israel that have potential for military purposes.

She said: “Sadly, Ireland has done absolutely nothing to stand by Palestine but you have. And in your action you express the hearts and minds and decency of people everywhere.”

On Friday the authorities at Trinity announced that the Book of Kells and Trinity College's campus will be closed to the public "until further notice" due to an ongoing protest camp taking place on its grounds.

A Trinity College spokesperson said while the university "respects the strong stance expressed" by people taking part in the protest, it also has a "duty of care" to the safety of all staff and students.

Moran Signs Contract For 112m New Build Project Palo Alto

By Ben Roberts

Moran Yacht & Ship have proudly announced the incredible sale of the 112m (367 ft) Lürssen new build, Project Palo Alto.

Project Palo Alto was commissioned for a long-time charter client of Moran Yacht & Ship, who has over the past seven years, chartered some of the largest and highest quality motor yachts in the world.

This experience has led to intense owner involvement, from design of guests accommodations to propulsion package selection, all the way to crew area arrangement.

“This project will be the largest yacht to date that Moran Yacht & Ship has built at Lurssen, ” explains President of MY&S Rob Moran. “ We are excited to be involved in such a great project with such a fantastic team. We look forward to yet another on time and under budget delivery while maintaining the highest quality standard; the Moran Yacht & Ship standard.”

With an interior and exterior styling by Andrew Winch Design , Project Palo Alto will feature two helicopter pads, a twelve meter swimming pool, a resort inspired spa in the aft of the vessel, and palatial staircases that to date have only been seen in palaces.

Her tender garage will accommodate two thirteen meter tenders, two additional ten meter tenders, a submarine, and a abundant selection of other water toys. Lack of space will not be an issue for this family-oriented owner. In addition to a massive private owner’s deck, eleven other guests staterooms will accommodate twenty-two additional guests in absolute comfort.

The complete construction of this vessel will be overseen by the experienced Moran Yacht & Ship new build team of Simon England, Patrick Foy, Derek Munroe, Ian Wetherill, Sean Moran, Paul Moran, and Robert Moran.

Moran Yacht & Ship currently has 10 new yacht construction projects underway across the globe with several others currently being negotiated.

65m Lürssen explorer yacht for sale Polar Star exterior

Another €5M price drop on 65m Lürssen explorer yacht Polar Star

The 65.2-metre Polar Star, currently listed for sale with Paul Moran, Lidia Tsareva and Vladimir Tupikov of Eastwind Yachts , has had a further price drop of €5,000,000.

Built by Lürssen in 2005, the steel and aluminium explorer motor yacht was designed by Espen Oeino . She has an ice-class hull, giving her access to remote parts of the world not typically frequented by most yachts.

Polar Star underwent an extensive refit in 2016 and has been continuously upgraded, including a full repaint by Pinmar in 2021. The broker said that "her new interior gives off a feeling of comfortable sophistication, with soft ocean tones throughout the ship."

Accommodation is for 12 guests in five cabins. The owner's cabin offers spectacular views and enjoys its own lounge for added privacy during extended cruising. The original interior design was by Pauline Nunns with a subsequent interior refit overseen by FM Architettura d’Interni.

During her 2016 refit, the hexagonal spa pool was replaced with a more practical rectangular, glass-fronted one, flanked by large sunpads, while a guest office was remodelled into a massage room.

The aft platform had also been extended by two metres and is large enough for guests to safely spill out onto from the sauna. Up top, the sundeck's hardtop was replaced with one made from carbon fibre, promising a weight reduction.

There are quarters for a crew of up to 20. The 1,495GT explorer yacht for sale has a 7,000-nautical-mile range with twin CAT 1,379kW engines pushing her up to a cruising speed of 14 knots and top speed of 15.5 knots. Polar Star completed her 15-year survey in 2020, when the generators and main engines had a complete rebuild.

Polar Star's asking price is now €54,000,000 (VAT paid). She is lying in Barcelona, Spain.

Trinity students' union president says Book of Kells protest will continue 'indefinitely'

THE PRESIDENT OF Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) has said that they will “indefinitely” block access to the Book of Kells on the college campus until the university cuts its ties to Israel.

László Molnárfi told The Journal  that students are also calling on the college to condemn Israel’s war on Gaza and to provide scholarships to Palestinians.

Students  began a camp-out protest  on a square outside the college’s famous Old Library on Friday in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza.

It came after the students’ union was  fined €214k by the college  for their persistent blockading of the Book of Kells tourist experience over issues such as postgraduate workers’ rights, fee increases and the the college’s ties with Israeli institutions.

The college has said its campus will continue to remain closed to the public amid the ongoing encampment.

Speaking to The Journal , Molnárfi said around 80 people are now taking part in the encampment.

“Our numbers have grown. Our forces have grown up. It’s a completely peaceful protest, we’re still blocking the Book of Kells indefinitely,” he said.

“People are eating, having conversations, board game nights, political discussions. It’s a community. It’s going really well.”

The Book of Kells is now closed indefinetly. No business as usual during a genocide. @tcddublin cut ties with the genocidal state of Israel! pic.twitter.com/LZ31xcvtYt — László Molnárfi (SU) (@TCDSU_President) May 3, 2024

Molnárfi described the response from the university as “shameful”.

He said students and staff have called on Trinity to divest from Israeli institutions since the current conflict in Gaza began.

“We’re asking them to make a strong statement condemning a genocide in Gaza. We’re asking them to support Palestinian scholars and provide scholarships. We’ve protested peacefully for the whole year. Now we’re taking more disruptive action,” he said.

He said the €200,000 fine was issued as a way to “intimidate” the students’ union.

“Now they’ve shut down all facilities. Libraries are closed. There’s currently no accessible bathrooms on campus, which poses a huge health and safety issue. They seem to want to turn students against us. This is their way of turning students against each other, which I think is shameful and deeply disappointing.”

When asked what paying the fine would do to the union, Molnárfi said: “It would bankrupt us, so we will not be paying.” However, he acknowledged that a court order could be issued in the matter.

He said Trinity has committed to looking into divesting from firms that feature on a UN blacklist, but not other Israeli institutions that the college has ties with.

“When the Russian-Ukraine war broke out, rightly so they cut ties with Russia, well they can do the same for Palestine.”

He cited the University of Galway’s decision to commit to reviewing its relationship with Israeli institutions .

“[The University of Galway] condemned what is happening in Gaza and committed to establishing more links to Palestinian universities and supporting Palestinian scholars. If University of Galway can do it, so can Trinity.”

Molnárfi said the protest has received huge support from students, college staff and the general public, adding: “Ireland stands with Palestine. Ireland stands with the students and staff protesting.”

In a statement today, Senator Annie Hoey, Labour’s Further and Higher education spokesperson, expressed support for the student protest and encampment in Trinity.

“The students of Trinity College Dublin are rightly protesting against Trinity’s financial investments in Israeli companies and links to Israeli institutions,” Hoey said.

“The Trinity College Dublin Endowment Fund has invested in 13 Israeli companies. Three of these include Bank Leumi, Shapir Engineering, and Energix. All of these companies feature on a UN Blacklist and are involved in the supply of equipment, services or materials for use in the West Bank or Gaza.”

Hoey said Trinity also receives over €2.5 million for research collaboration with Israel from twelve Israeli organisations.

“Trinity collaborates with Tel Aviv University, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the Weizmann Institute of Science, and 9 others. From these ties, Trinity receives over €2.5 million but these organisations have been found to be directly involved with Israeli Defence Forces and Israel’s occupation of Palestine,” she continued.

“The students have protested these issues consistently, and by Trinity’s rules, for the past number of months but there has been little response or action taken.

“Protest that does not cause an interruption or nuisance for the University have been ignored. It is right for the students to escalate their protest.

“Solidarity with the students of Trinity College Dublin. They are doing the heavy lifting on this issue and we need to see our universities divest from being complicit in genocide.”

Testimonials

Terrific campus walking tour with Luca The highlight of our time at Trinity College was the walking tour with Luca. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining – the perfect mix for an outstanding tour guide.

Guided campus tour highly recommended We took the guided tour of the campus that included a visit to the library. The tour with Sarah was excellent – she was bright, funny and knowledgeable. The campus is beautiful and the stories behind some of the buildings are fascinating. The old library was of course amazing as well.
