Carnival Cruise Lines

The 130,000-ton, 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic was launched in Venice in May 2011. She was Carnival's 23rd ship and Carnival Corporation's 100th. Mainstream cruising sure has come a long way in size, as is seen in this picture comparing Carnival's first ship with the corporation's 100th. What doesn't show in the picture is how much the onboard experience and amenities have improved over the past 40 years.

The Carnival Magic sails seven-day cruises year-round to the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico from its home port in Port Canaveral, Florida. This review and photos are from the inaugural  9-day cruise from Venice to Barcelona .

The company's goal is to factor in "fun" and "memorable" when designing a new Carnival ship. The Carnival Magic is a great ship and fits Carnival's "fun ship" and "memorable" theme perfectly. Carnival executives know their primary target market is middle America, and this ship is geared towards the type of memorable cruise vacation North American families and couples are looking for--social, fun, affordable, unpretentious, and good value for their vacation dollar. They've certainly succeeded with this ship.

The Carnival Magic is much like her sister ship the Carnival Dream launched in 2009, but has a few interesting differences outlined below that are discussed in more detail further in this article.

Let's take a detailed tour of the Carnival Magic.

Carnival Magic -- Dining and Cuisine

The Carnival Magic features many favorite dining venues that past Carnival cruisers recognize. In addition, the cruise ship has two exciting new dining options that have quickly become guest favorites.

The first new venue was an overnight success from its first sailing. The RedFrog Pub is Carnival Cruise Line's first onboard pub. Located on deck 5, the RedFrog has both indoor and outdoor seating for 120 guests. Its theme is a mixture of the Caribbean and Key West, with palm trees and decor straight out of a beach bar. Although the inaugural sailing was in the Mediterranean, this laid-back cruise ship definitely has a Caribbean feel. The RedFrog serves Caribbean-themed pub snacks such as coconut shrimp, chicken wings, Bahamian conch salad, and fried grouper fingers. Yummy, and a perfect lunch, snack, or light dinner. The pub also has live music that fits the Caribbean theme and a wide selection of island beers, frozen libations, and rum drinks.

Carnival has brewed its first private-label draught beer especially for the Carnival Magic, called Thirsty Frog Red.  As you might expect, Thirsty Frog Red is red in color and has a very slight fruity taste. Very tasty.

Carnival has made excellent use of the space over the Lido Marketplace, adding an Italian family-style dining venue called Cucina del Capitano ("The Captain's Kitchen"). This traditional Italian restaurant, with its red and white checked tablecloths and kegs of Chianti, pays homage to Carnival's Italian heritage. Past Carnival cruisers already know that all of the line's captains are Italian and many Carnival ships, including the Carnival Magic, were built in Italy. The menu consists of made-to-order Italian favorites developed by the cruise line's executive chef and four chefs de cuisine who spent three weeks in Italy researching and eating with some of Italy's finest chefs and their families. Those who don't like Chianti can choose from a wine list specializing in Italian vintages or one of the specialty cocktails such as a Limoncello Martini designed just for Cucina del Capitano.

Meals at Cucina del Capitano are casual and fun, featuring homemade pasta and other Italian specialties. Some recipes come straight from the Captains' (or their wives') kitchens. Most diners love two other elements of this restaurant. The first is all the old captioned-photographs lining the walls. Most of these pictures either came from Carnival's archives or from the personal collections of Carnival's current or former captains. The second is the warm service, touched with fun. The waiters serve Chianti from rolling kegs and entertain the diners with lively songs.

Carnival hasn't changed all the restaurants on the Carnival Magic, continuing with two large main dining rooms, Northern Lights (midship on decks 3 and 4 with 948 seats) and Southern Lights (aft on decks 3 and 4 with 1,248 seats). Dinner is served at two fixed seatings (6:00 pm and 8:15 pm) or with anytime dining between 5:45 and 9:30 pm. Dinner usually includes six appetizers and soups, two salads, and six main courses. Also offered are traditional selections like Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled flat iron steak, grilled chicken, and gourmet burgers. The dessert menu also features six selections, including a Carnival favorite--the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Carnival still has its classic alternative Prime Steakhouse on the Carnival Magic. This room is elegant and has a great atmosphere. If you like beef, lamb, or lobster, you will love the Prime Steakhouse. Located aft on deck 5, this contemporary steakhouse has prime beef ranging from a 9-ounce filet to a 24-ounce porterhouse. Those looking for a "lighter" meal can enjoy the fish or chicken. The side orders are huge and delicious, with wasabi mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms table favorites. Although Prime has a surcharge, it's a great place for a special meal to accompany your unforgettable cruise vacation. It only seats 69, so get your reservations early.

Those looking for another unforgettable experience might choose to experience the Chef's Table in the galley. Eight to twelve guests get to savor a special menu that begins with a champagne and canapés cocktail hour, followed by a personal tour of the galley in operation, and a seven-course meal with wine pairings. This one comes at a steep price but would provide some great stories to take back home.

The Lido Marketplace offers international flavors at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Almost every type of cuisine is offered on one day or another, including Italian, Asian, Tex-Mex, tandoori, and all sorts of deli sandwiches and salad-fixings. Pizza and frozen yogurt are available 24-hours a day.

On sea days, Carnival Magic's outdoor Lanai area on deck 5 transforms into an on-deck barbecue, dishing up grilled items such as sliders, chicken, and hot dogs. Salads, homemade chips and salsa, quesadillas, and traditional barbecue accompaniments are also included.

Also on deck 5 in the Ocean Plaza is the Plaza Cafe, a patisserie serving specialty coffees and sweets such as baked-on-board cakes, pies, and cookies for a nominal charge. The Plaza Cafe also has freshly made milkshakes and premium ice cream. With both indoor and outdoor seating in a central location, this is a busy hub of the ship.

One of the most popular places late in the afternoon on deck 5 near the Ocean Plaza(from about 5 pm to 8:15 pm) is the sushi bar with complimentary freshly-made sushi.

The Carnival Magic also has complimentary 24-hour room service with a selection of sandwiches, salads, and snacks.

Carnival Magic -- Outdoor Deck Areas

Everyone seems to enjoy the outdoor deck areas of the Carnival Magic. The SportSquare area on the top deck aft offers guests the chance to try the cruise industry's first ropes course, aptly named the SkyCourse. The 230-foot ropes course has 20 bridges, each named for a Carnival home port city; 10 distinct elements; and 20 different activities over two different loops, an inner basic loop and an outer more "challenging" route. Both looked very difficult and a little too thrilling, although participants wear a safety harness while traversing the nets, ropes, and bridges. The course was busy day and night, and the thrill-seekers have a great view of the ocean far below. Participants are checking out the view while resting between activities and elements. Seeing the smiles on kids' and grown-ups' faces shows they were having a good time while improving their balance, coordination, and confidence. It's certainly a great activity for families and up to 1400 people per day can use the course.

Also in the SportSquare complex are a miniature golf course; outdoor weightlifting area; a Vita exercise course with machines and stations; a lighted multi-purpose court for basketball, volleyball and soccer; and ping pong and foosball tables. Circling the entire area is an eighth-mile jogging track with great views of the sea and all the people enjoying the SportSquare activities. A full bar with a large flat-screen display is available for those who just want to relax and check out the sports action in the area or on TV.

The outdoor decks on the Carnival Magic include the WaterWorks aqua park with its exhilarating (or terrifying) 312-foot spiral "Twister" and "Drainpipe" water slides, as well as an Aqua Play splash park for youngsters and their families. One new feature of the splash park is the "Power Drencher", a gigantic, 300-gallon "dump bucket". The bucket slowly fills before tipping on its side and making its own waterfall. Don't worry, no one gets 300 gallons dumped on their head--a bell clangs just before the bucket dumps, and a large tray spreads the water out amongst several areas. People loved it, although bah-humbug me thought the ringing bell a little annoying.

Forward on the top deck is Serenity, the adults-only quiet area, with plenty of very comfortable chaise lounges, hammocks, barrel chairs, umbrellas, whirlpools, and a full-service bar. Serenity also has two large whirlpools.

The Carnival Magic has two resort-style pool areas. The midship Beach Pool is the largest area and features a Seaside Theatre with a 270-square-foot LED screen and poolside seating. In the daytime, guests sunbathe, read, or watch sports, cartoons, or concerts on the movie screen. At night, movies are shown. The Tides Pool is aft on the Carnival Magic and also has plenty of seating and great views of the wake of the ship when sailing.

The Lanai on deck 5 is a half-mile outdoor promenade encircling the Carnival Magic, with easy access to the Ocean Plaza, RedFrog Pub, and other indoor areas of the ship. The Lanai also has seating and wind deflectors, making it a pleasant place to sit even on windy days. Four cantilevered whirlpools extend out over the sides of the ship, providing a relaxing place to watch the world go by on the Lanai.

Carnival Magic -- Indoor Public Areas

The  interior decor of the Carnival Magic  is bright and fun, although not quite as over-the-top as some previous Carnival ships. Principal designer Joe Farcus seems to have gone for a slightly more subdued look, which  Carnival  guests still love. Don't worry, the cruise line hasn't sacrificed one bit of fun, with some memorable touches.

The central atrium/lobby area is gorgeous, terrific lighting and multi-deck glass elevators soaring towards the overhead skylight. The guest relations desk and shore excursion desk are on deck 3, along with a large dance floor. A small bandstand, where live musicians perform night and day, is suspended over the dance floor. Guests can lean over the railing on all the decks above and listen to the music and watch the action below.

On deck 5 surrounding the atrium are the retail shops. Most of these are like those on other ships--Carnival-branded merchandise, clothing, jewelry, liquor, perfumes, etc. However, one new retail shop is going to be very popular with the kids--Cherry on Top. It's more than bins of colorful candy in a candy store, although that's the most eye-catching feature when you enter the shop. The Cherry on Top shop also has cute gifts, cards, and flowers, all designed to make a special person in your life feel even more special.

The thousands of kids sailing on the Carnival Magic also appreciate the 19,000 square feet of space dedicated just to them. Camp Carnival caters to those 2-11; Circle C is for the 'tweens ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for the older teens ages 15 to 17. Each group has its own set of counselors, own space, and age-appropriate activities.

Parents of young children appreciate Carnival's Night Owls program on the Carnival Magic. This is an enhancement of the cruise line's babysitting service and is on all Carnival ships.

Adults also appreciate the 22,770 square-foot Cloud 9 Spa, with its combination of fitness, wellness, workout, and personal-pampering spaces. The space is quiet and soothing, and the thalassotherapy pool, treatment rooms, and thermal suites are especially great for unwinding and ridding the body of tension and stress. The fitness facility has all the latest equipment including treadmills, bicycles, fitness machines, spinning equipment, and ellipticals.

The Hat Trick casino has all the popular table games and even some penny slots.

A Carnival ship wouldn't be a "fun ship" without a wide variety of bars and lounges, and the Carnival Magic is no different. Many of the bars and lounges are on deck 5, and each has its own personality. The 400-seat Spotlight Lounge has a small stage and dance floor, making it perfect for comedy acts and Superstar Live Karaoke (with a live four-piece band and backup singer). The Play It Again Piano Bar is a popular spot; quiet when the pianist is not playing, but full of fun (and singing) when he is. Vibe is the name of the dance club, and everyone loves the lighted tables and purple mood lighting. Of course, you can find a drink at the RedFrog Pub or Ocean Plaza bars, both on deck 5.

Deck 5 isn't the only place you can find a bar on the Carnival Magic. There are several bars on the pool decks, and the Magic Bar in the deck 3 lobby is a good place to people-watch or listen to the live music. The very quiet, small Escape Bar is tucked in a corner next to the Northern Lights Dining Room and the Books & Games library.

The Carnival Magic has a large conference center area on deck 3 that can be used for meetings and weddings. Embracing modern technology, the Carnival Magic has dozens of "Fun Hubs" of computers scattered throughout the ship. The Fun Hub is a social network and shipboard Intranet portal that provides access to a variety of information on Carnival Magic's services, facilities, and daily activities. Carnival Magic also offers cell phone service and bow-to-stern WiFi, so those bringing along their own computers can access the Fun Hub and surf the Web from their own cabin or common area on the ship.

The 1,300-seat Showtime Theater on the Carnival Magic has a huge stage, perfect for its three new production shows and for a wide variety of entertainment. The Showtime Theater is also used for bingo, presentations, and lectures.

Carnival Magic Cabins and Suites

The 1,845  Carnival Magic cabins  and suites are similar to the wide array of  accommodations on the Carnival Dream . The cabins are a nice size, with plenty of storage. Families love the two-bathroom/five-berth cabins and the connecting staterooms. Carnival has continued the cove balcony cabins on deck 2 that have cozy balconies closer to the water line and the spa cabins that provide special access and benefits.

Carnival  has kept many of its guests' favorite venues on the new Carnival Magic, but also added some new ones that are sure to please its thousands of mainstream North American guests. Although the ship is primarily marketed to North America, we had an international group of guests on our Mediterranean cruise, including about 600 Russians. They all seemed to be having a great time, and it's fun to interact with people from different cultures and countries on a cruise ship.

The Carnival Magic is a good fit for those who love big cruise ships and are looking for a fun and memorable cruise, filled with opportunities to socialize with other guests or with their own companions or family. It doesn't have as many alternative restaurants as many other newer ships do, but there's enough diversity of cuisine to satisfy anyone on a one- or two-week cruise.

Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Magic Review

While the magic's cabins may be relatively plain, and its cuisine is far from gourmet, this is a ship that's hard not to enjoy..

Anonymous Cruise Editor

Updated November 9, 2015

Unveiled in May 2011, the 3,690-passenger (double occupancy; at most it can fit 4,730) Carnival Magic is the second in Carnival’s Dream Class series, but it’s not a carbon copy of its older sister (Carnival Dream, launched in 2009). In addition to two large pool areas and one of Carnival’s trademark WaterWorks aqua parks with multiple water slides, its deck-top areas include such additions as the first ropes course at sea as well as the first outdoor weight-lifting area at sea (think Venice Beach). Dubbed SkyCourse, the ropes course is part of a deck-top area called SportsSquare that also has a basketball court (which supposedly doubles as a soccer playing area), a miniature golf course and ping pong.

Cabin Overview

Our cabin: interior, other cabins, cabin amenities, dining overview, southern and northern lights, la cucina del capitano, prime steakhouse, lido marketplace, ocean plaza cafe and bar, lido grill and pizza, tide bar tandoor & deli, chef's table dinner, in-room dining, drinks overview, red frog pub & beach bar, beaches bar, spa and gym overview, pools, decks & sun areas, lounges & public spaces, other recreation, kids programs, staff & ship policies, health & safety.

On the inside of the Carnival Magic are several showrooms and a wide range of bars and lounges including Carnival’s first-ever pub, the RedFrog (serving Carnival’s own craft beer, ThirstyFrog Red). In addition to two main restaurants, the ship also has a steakhouse (a Carnival trademark) and a new-for-the-line casual Italian eatery. Like other mass-market lines, Carnival offers flexible “dine at your time” seating in one of its two main restaurants (the other offers dinner at fixed seating times). In general, the Carnival Magic is a casual ship, with a “cruise casual” dress code in all of the restaurants (although the ship does have an “elegant” night, where everybody sports their best attire).

{{ gallery "introphotos" }}

In addition to such cruise ship mainstays as a duty-free shop and photo gallery, Carnival Magic’s retail shop line-up includes a first-for-the-line sweet shop. Families, couples, and singles should find plenty to do.

The Carnival Magic is a big, mass-market ship that’s packed with all sorts of fun-focused activities, from the first ropes course at sea to some of the hottest water slides at sea. Like other Carnival vessels, it aims at a wide audience of vacationers looking for a not-too-expensive, not-too-stuffy warm-weather getaway. Families, in particular, will find it appealing, and for travelers on a budget, it’s hard to beat.

Unveiled in May 2011, the Carnival Magic is the newest of Carnival’s 23 ships — a significant plus in a segment of travel where newness counts. It boasts a cleaner, less flashy decor than older Carnival vessels with a number of new venues including Carnival’s first pub (a lively, Caribbean-themed outlet) and a bustling family-style Italian eatery where the waiters sing in between courses. It also offers extensive children’s facilities, multiple pool areas, and multiple show lounges including a comedy club.

Like other Carnival ships, the Carnival Magic isn’t a luxury product. Cabins are relatively plain, though perfectly functional, and the dining isn’t gourmet (though the food in the main dining rooms is if anything a cut above what’s offered on competing mass-market lines). It’s also not a formal ship, if that’s what you crave. Casual is the word on board.

Overall, for its price point, the Carnival Magic is a great ship.

There are six basic room types on the Carnival Magic. We stayed in two.

Nearly half (851) of the 1,845 cabins on the ship are ocean-view cabins with balconies. There also are 221 similar cabins without balconies, 719 “interior” cabins (inward-facing, without a window onto the sea), and 54 larger suites with balconies. The standard balcony cabin offers 185 square feet of interior space plus another 35 square feet of space on its balcony, and it has room for two to four passengers, which is typical for Carnival and other mass-market lines. Among the variations on balcony cabins are a number of rear-facing balcony cabins that feature a 60-square-foot balcony, and premium “Vista” balcony cabins with a 75-square-foot balcony. Suite options include a Junior Suite with 275 square feet of interior space (and a 35 square foot balcony), and the ship’s biggest rooms are its 345-square-foot Grand Suites and 430-square-foot Ocean Suites.

The Carnival Magic’s cabin choices also include two new-for-the-line variations on standard cabins: Spa-themed Spa Balcony Cabins, located on deck 12, and family-friendly Deluxe Ocean View cabins that sleep up to five people and include two bathrooms. The spa cabins feature spa-like decorations, private access to the ship’s spa, unlimited use of the facility, including thalasotherapy pool and thermal suite, and a special package, including bath & beauty products and complimentary fitness classes.

Most of the cabins on the Carnival Magic are on decks zero, one, and six through nine. There also are a few cabins on decks 10, 11, and 12.

Below is a table with details about all the possible cabin types we could find. You may not encounter some of these on Carnival’s website until you start the booking process.

Interior cabins on the Carnival Magic are small but efficient. Upon entering the room, there are closets to one side and a bathroom to the other, leaving a narrow but passable walkway to reach the bed area. The king-size bed (which can be split apart to become two twin beds) comes off the back wall of the room and is flanked by two small nightstands (each containing a small storage space). On each side of the bed there is about two feet of space before coming to the wall, just enough room to move around in when getting in and out of bed. The room also has a desk with vanity, a cabinet, and a TV. Note: As is becoming increasingly common with new ships, there is a slot for one's keycard next to the door that activates the electricity in the room. If you forget to put your keycard in it upon entering the room, the lights won't work.

The king-size bed is quite comfortable, with big pillows and a thick blanket. Opposite the bed is a desk with vanity and four drawers. In one of these drawers is a hair dryer and laundry tags. Next to the bed are two nightstands with space for small items. The closet area of the room is relatively spacious and definitely big enough for the belongings of two vacationers. The TV is mounted on the side of the closet, facing the bed in a way that makes it easy to watch while laying in bed. Underneath the TV is a cabinet containing a mini bar and safe. If requested, Carnival will lock the mini bar for the duration of the voyage.

The bathroom is small, but you could squeeze two in at the same time. And with the big mirror and vanity located outside the bathroom, nobody has to wait too long to get ready.

There are three floor-to-ceiling closet compartments along the wall of the room, one with shelves and two with space for hanging clothes. One of the closet compartments is partly taken up with life jackets and a spare blanket. The closets have plenty of room for two people's clothes.

{{photo_gallery "Cabin 1 Bedroom Photos", "Cabin 1 Bathroom Photos", "Cabin 1 Closets & Storage Photos" }}

A big room with a balcony that sleeps up to three people. We managed to sneak in for a first-hand look, but couldn’t get photos.

Balcony cabins on the Carnival Magic are long and narrow. Upon entering the room, there are closet compartments on one side of the door and a bathroom on the other side, creating a narrow walkway to the main bed area of the room. On one side of this main bed area is a smallish couch that can be used as a bed, along with a coffee table. Opposite is a long, built-in desk area with vanity, drawers, and a little cabinet. There is a flat-screen television mounted to the wall over this cabinet. On the far end of the room, coming off one of the walls, is a king size bed that can be converted into two twin beds. It is flanked on each side by a small nightstand. Overall, the room is efficient and functional.

The balcony is relatively narrow, leaving room for two upright chairs but not longer lounge chairs. The balconies of adjacent cabins are separated by dividers that can be opened like doors. These dividers normally are locked in the closed position but can be unlocked and propped open by a room steward in cases where passengers have booked two adjacent cabins. Note: The dividers between balconies do not provide much soundproofing, so it’s likely you’ll hear whatever your neighbors are saying while on your balcony, and vice versa.

Deluxe Ocean View

We've not yet stayed in this cabin, but here's what the cruise line has to say:

On Carnival Magic, Deluxe Ocean View staterooms are ideal for families. Rooms in this category feature a separate washroom — in addition to the full bathroom — and while stateroom configurations vary, certain Deluxe Ocean View rooms sleep up to five. – Carnival Cruise Lines

{{ attachments "Deluxe Ocean View" }}

Cove Balcony

You’ll find a Carnival Magic Cove Balcony stateroom located as close as you can get to the waterline — and still be on the ship! — which means one amazing outdoor, up-close view of the ocean while you cruise. – Carnival Cruise Lines

{{photo_gallery "Cove Balcony"}}

Grand Suite

We’ve not yet stayed in this cabin, but here’s what the cruise line has to say:

For the most spacious room available onboard, try a Grand Suite, which features even more space than a standard suite — they don’t make them any bigger than this! You’ll enjoy all the benefits of a suite, including VIP check-in and a huge balcony, a Grand Suite also includes a convenient dressing area with vanity. – Carnival Cruise Lines

{{photo_gallery "Grand Suite"}}

Cloud 9 Spa Balcony

Whether you’re warming up for your spa-time or winding down afterward, there’s no better place to do it than on your Cloud 9 Spa Balcony. Take in the ocean breeze, then let it out. There you go — breathing is important — you’re already getting the hang of the spa life! – Carnival Cruise Lines

{{photo_gallery "Spa Balcony"}}

Amenities vary depending on cabin type, but even in a small room we had plenty of electrical outlets and WiFi.

Upon arrival, passengers will find a basketfull of trial-sized toiletries in the bathroom, including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and razors -- a nice touch not found on most other lines. Additionally, the shower has a shampoo and soap dispenser.

Electricity for the room is turned on with the key card, and the slot for the card is at the entrance. There is one master switch for all of the cabin's lights at the entrance to the room and another at the head of the bed (the latter very handy at bed time). That said, the lamps on the nightstands next to the bed have to be switched off separately. Cabins have individual air conditioning controls that allows passengers to adjust the room's temperature. There are two 110-volt outlets and one 240-volt for European gadgets. In one drawer is a hair dryer.

The mini bar contains soft drinks, beers, spirits and wine, prices for which are the same as in the ship's bars (minus the 15% gratuity that is tacked on in bars). In addition, a big bottle of water is atop the minibar, priced at about $5.

Phone and Internet

A telephone is atop the room's built-in desk area, with important phone numbers like room and guest service pre-programmed into it. There also is WiFi Internet access in the room, for an extra charge.

{{photo_gallery "Phone and Internet Photos"}}

Carnival Magic offers a number of options when it comes to food. In addition to two main dining rooms that come at no extra charge to passengers, there are two extra-charge specialty restaurants. For those who prefer a casual eatery, the Magic also offers a huge buffet with tons of food, as well as a pool-side grill, deli, pizza station and Indian cuisine station. The Plaza Bar & Cafe offers a Continental breakfast, sandwiches, cakes and very good European-style coffee. New to Carnival on the Carnival Magic is the RedFrog Pub, with snacks and its own brand of beer.

Southern Lights and Northern Lights are the main dining rooms onboard the Carnival magic. The Southern Lights serves passengers who opted for traditional fixed-time seating. The Northern Lights Restaurant is the second main dining room and where anyone who opted for Carnival's more flexible Your Time Dining will get their meals. Beyond that, it's the same as Southern Lights. Both dining rooms are decorated with big chandeliers, and have the same decor as the main lobby. Tables are covered with white cloth with pink-and-black place settings. On the far end a big panorama window looks out over the ocean. Both restaurants have big staircases leading to the upper level.

The wait staff is pleasant and speedy, and after seven days we got to know them a little. Each night the whole staff sings and dances to modern and classic tunes. Though main courses change every night, part of the menu stays the same.

This is definitely not gourmet food, but the chefs of the Magic do a pretty good job. The majority of the menu is standard restaurant fare. Most dishes are tasty and well-prepared. If you order a steak medium rare, that's exactly what you get. We tried several dishes on the daily menu and were surprised at the high quality. We'd strongly suggest the escargot in olive oil and garlic. Compared to the same dish on the Norwegian Dawn, it was amazing.

For main courses, we loved the Chateaubriand, either medium rare or medium well (the only two options). It tasted great, with tender beef and just the right preparation.

On sea days, the Carnival Magic offers a tea time in the Southern Lights restaurant. With your tea, you can get a piece of cake, cucumber sandwiches, and salmon crackers.

A smaller restaurant, more homey than the Northern Lights and Southern Lights, La Cucina Del Capitano is, as the name suggests, an Italian venue. The big surprise, perhaps, is that the pasta is made fresh. Located right above the Lido, it has a beautiful view of the ocean -- a perfect place for a romantic dinner. There is no charge for the pasta lunch, but dinner carries a surcharge of $12 per person ($5 for kids).

La Cucina has the feel of a small, family-owned restaurant, with checkered table cloths, different looking chairs and high tables. One of the entrances is through the Lido and up a staircase, and Carnival installed two beautiful glass Tiffany-like chandeliers.

At lunch, La Cucina offers a pasta bar, with a choice of three pastas and several sauces. A waiter hands passengers a piece of paper to select the pasta and sauce. You give your choice directly to the chef, and after just a few minutes, you get your lunch. The pasta is al dente and the sauce well-seasoned, but it's not as good as the dinner you can get here.

Dinner starts with a proper menu and some delicious wine choices. The insalata caprese came with deliciously thick slices of tomato and mozzarella. Better yet were the arancini, little risotto and parmesan balls; a little on the heavier side, but delicious.

We tried the signature dish, "Il Baccio del Mare," with linguini and tasty clams. Only the tomato sauce could have used a bit more punching up. Spaghetti carbonara was spot-on, the pancetta not too crispy, the cream sauce perfect. According to the menu, this is one of Carnival's longest served dishes (starting in the 1940s), and rightly so – it is delicious.

Desserts at La Cucina del Capitano are typical Italian: tiramisu, cannoli, panna cotta.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 3 Overview Photos", "Restaurant 3 Lunch / Dinner Photos", "Restaurant 3 Dessert Photos"}}

Prime Steakhouse is a small, stylish restaurant with a more sophisticated ambiance than the other restaurants on the ship, and offers a panoramic view of the sea. Families will have just as much fun as a couple on a romantic dinner. The restaurant is definitely worth a try, even with a $25 cover charge.* The food is definitely one of the best on the ship, and early reservations are highly recommended.

A cold tomato soup with balsamic and a rosemary foccacia with a delicious tomato and rosemary salsa serves as an amuse bouche. The mushroom cappuccino, with five types of mushrooms and cream, truffle oil and thyme is among the best mushroom soups we’ve ever had. The baby leaf spinach with mushrooms, blue cheese and parmesan is a refreshingly light and healthy appetizer. However, if you like raw fish, the ahi tuna tartar should be perfect for you, with a pleasant and not overpowering acidic taste.

Prime Steakhouse also serves an excellent macaroni-and-cheese, prepared with five different types of cheese. The surf and turf is classic, including filet Mignon and two king prawns beside mashed potatoes and wasabi horseradish. The meat was perfectly cooked to order, medium rare, and the lime on the prawns gave a nice acidic tinge. However, the mashed potatoes were not spicy at all, despite the horseradish.

For dessert, chocolate aficionados will be in heaven with the chocolate sampler, which comes with four chocolate desserts, each better than the last.

* Note: In June 2012, Carnival increased the surcharge on all its steakhouses, to $35 per person.

The Lido Marketplace is a huge place with four buffet lines, a large salad bar, a wok station and a carving station. It has the look and feel of a canteen, with small alcoves of benches divided by glass. Like most of the ship’s interior, the space is all green and blues. Though often crowded, it’s light and airy inside, and a good place for a quick bite without dressing up. You can take your food out to the poolside, too.

The Lido offers a classic continental breakfast, pancakes, waffles, sweet rolls, french toast, cold cuts, and cereals. For the healthier breakfast, there is a wide array of fruit. At three different egg stations, chefs cook omelets to order, with a choice of mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and cheese. The french toast and the waffles are quite tasty, even though they’re not the freshest after sitting around in the buffet for a while.

The salad bar in the Lido is immense and offers prepared salads, or you can make your own. Hot meals include Jamaican and Asian specialties, paellas, chicken and beef, hamburgers and hot dogs, fruits, cold cuts, and cheese. One of the best spots in the Lido is the wok station. You can choose between different noodles, then add in vegetables, meat (chicken, beef, and calamari) and sauce. Give your full plate to the chef behind the counter and get a freshly prepared, healthy meal back.

Dessert choices change several times during the week, but are the same as the rest of the ship. The best dessert we tried was the apricot crumble cake: a fresh and sweet indulgence.

The Plaza Bar & Cafe is located in the middle of deck five, between the two Lanai whirlpools, and offers Viennese-style coffee and cakes. It includes a bar area offering a small buffet for breakfast (croissants, marmalade, cereals), and sandwiches for lunch on sea days.

Ocean Plaza has inside seating, two outdoor spaces on either side of the ship, and a stage. The interior is decorated with mosaics and blue lights. In the afternoon you can participate in trivia games, and at night a live band gives it a pleasant lounge-feel.

The breakfast buffet at Ocean Plaza offers croissants, bread, cereals, oatmeal and coffee. It’s a small buffet, and rarely crowded, as most passengers don’t seem to know it’s there. You can get complimentary coffee or purchase a fancier coffee drink at the Plaza bar.

The Plaza offers lunch (only on sea days) at a sandwich station, where you can choose your ingredients, a cook puts everything together, and heats it up if you wish. There is nothing special about the sandwiches, but it is a good small meal.

The Sushi Bar is a walk-in joint where a sushi chef prepares fresh rolls and hands them out. This is not a real restaurant and does not have any dedicated tables. Located next to the RedFrog Pub in the hallway, there are tables and chairs lining the windows. There’s little decoration, but they managed to scrape together some fake bamboo and grass pots. The sushi rolls are displayed behind glass.

The sushi is quite good, not too thick, the rice tastes pleasantly vinegary and the rolls are good, overall. They have California rolls and vegetarian rolls, but they’re nothing special.

{{photo_gallery "Restaurant 7 Overview Photos", "Restaurant 7 Lunch / Dinner Photos"}}

The Lido Grill & Pizza is on both sides of the main pool on deck ten. The grill serves up burgers and hot dogs, as well as salsa and tacos. You can get pizza 24 hours a day, making this just the right place to kill those tiny cravings in the middle of the night.

Being part of the pool area, you can use the bar and its tables to sit down and eat, which are bright rattan chairs and wooden tables.

For breakfast you can get waffles, french toast, and pancakes with maple syrup and honey. The egg station offers freshly prepared omelet with mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and cheese. It’s done similarly in other parts of the ship. But if you want, you can also get pizza for breakfast.

Lunch at the Grill & Pizza is just what it sounds like – burgers, hot dogs, tacos with cheese or salsa dip, and pizza. There are different kinds of pizza, like pepperoni and cheese pizzas. The pizzas are actually quite good, freshly made and not too thick, with plenty of toppings. The burgers are already cooked, so you just have to fill you bun with all your favorite ingredients. If you manage to time your arrive when they’re fresh, the burgers are great. Long tenures under the heat lamp don’t do them any favors.

Tandoor offers fresh Indian food, while the deli has sandwiches and paninis. Both stations are located on the back of the ship on deck 11, right by the Tide Bar and the pool. Wooden tables and dark rattan chairs offer respite.

Tandoor offers delicious Indian food. One of the best dishes here is the garlic naan, made fresh at the station. Other dishes include chicken curry, lamb, salads, and yogurt sauces. At the deli you can get freshly-made hot and cold sandwiches.

The Chef's Table is an experience that Carnival offers on several vessels in its fleet that blends a behind-the-scenes look at the ship's galley with a high-end dinner. After a galley tour hosted by the ship’s chef de cuisine, passengers sit down to a gourmet meal. It's rather interesting to have a behind-the-scenes look at the staff putting together these delicious dishes. It's an environment in which the executive chef can experiment with new kinds of cuisine and special dishes without worrying about how to scale the portions to feed a whole ship. According to Carnival, the food is a result of years of research and hundreds of tests to perfect the techniques used for their dinners.

Chef's Table has space for 12 people and you have to make a reservation. The cover charge of $80 includes four appetizers, six entrées, a dessert, wine pairing, and a cookbook with recipes from each of Carnival's executive chefs. In our opinion, the food is worth every penny.

All 12 courses at the Chef’s Table dinner are fantastic. Our dinner included olives stuffed with parmesan, dates with chorizo, focaccia, mascarpone cream and prosciutto crudo, langoustine and sun-dried tomato jam fritters for starters. Main dishes included “tomatoes our way” with aerated tomato juice, coated in cocoa butter, and poached in chardonnay. The caramelized cornish hen with butternut squash sofrito, or salmon with herb pesto, cured tomatoes, fava beans, and condensed beets are equally delicious. Magic’s chef also served a kind of bavarios with spinach, green peas, warm turnips, and apple juice. The second-to-last dish, salmon with herb pesto, cured tomatoes, and fava beans, was our least favorite. However, we were compensated with the slow-stewed short ribs with potato pebbles and pumpkin fudge, which was tender and melted on the tongue.

Every dish was great, but we did have our favorites. The best appetizer, the chorizo & dates, was deliciously savory and sweet at the same time. Our favorite main dish was definitely the tuna banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich with a distinctly French influence. Little balls of avocado cream were on the plate, and because they were made with sugar syrup and a little sweet, they completed the tuna and sesame tacos. Fake caviar was made of balsamic vinegar and cream, and served in an iced bowl made of basil, all together is an explosion of sweet and sour on the tongue.

Sadly, we were not allowed to take pictures in the galley, so we cannot provide any photos of these dishes – but it was the best dinner we had on the ship.

Room service is available 24 hours a day. The menu includes cold sandwiches (tuna sandwich, ham and cheese, or peanut butter), hot sandwiches (grilled cheese, reuben with corned beef, etc.), chicken fajita, mixed greens, and assorted vegetables. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to get the food delivered to the room. Breakfast is served until 11 am, and has to be ordered in advance by 4 am.

For breakfast you can get different cereals, bread, croissants, jams, honey, yogurt, coffee, milk, and juices. No eggs, sorry.

For lunch and dinner in-room options, Carnival Magic offers cold and hot sandwiches, a wrap, mixed greens, and assorted vegetables with blue cheese dip – the only “healthy” choices on this menu. Based on the limited options, you get the feeling that Carnival doesn’t really want you to eat in your room. It’s understandable; even the buffet is a lot better than anything in the room service menu.

Desserts include a fruit salad, different cakes, like chocolate and apple, cup cakes, and cookies. The cookies are great, but you can get better in any of the restaurants or at the buffet.

There are no alcoholic beverages on the menu, perhaps because the mini bar in your room already has plenty of beers and spirits available.

{{photo_gallery "In-Room Dining Overview Photos", "In-Room Dining Breakfast Photos", "In-Room Dining Lunch / Dinner Photos", "In-Room Dining Dessert Photos"}}

Carnival Magic has wines from all over the world. There is cabernet from Argentina, pinot noir from the US, Bordeaux from France, and Chianti from Italy. La Cucina offers a special Chianti, which is smooth, not too fruity, and just the perfect pairing for your pasta.

As for beers, Magic offers Budweiser, Stella, Foster, Corona, and other international beers, as well as ThirstyFrog, a beer specially brewed for the ship's RedFrog Pub.

A lot of umbrella drinks are on the menu, including a number of what the line calls "Icy Inventions," like the Kiss on the Lips, the Hurricane Wave or the Mocha Chocolate Getaway. Of course, you also can get the old classics like Long Island iced tea, margaritas, daiquiris, mojitos, and pina coladas. At the pool bar you can get a special pina colada with melon and blue curacao, just the right thing to cool you off.

The Magic offers a soda package and a wine package, wherein you can buy several bottles of wine for a special price.

In addition to soda, water and juices, Carnival Magic offers smoothies. All mixed drinks can also be made virgin.

The RedFrog Pub is located on deck five, right next to the sushi bar. Inspired by Caribbean pubs, the colors inside are vibrant. Carnival offers a specially brewed beer and Caribbean-inspired snacks. A singer and guitar player performs contemporary music every night. This is one of the few places on the Magic that is always packed. The waiters are totally laid back, an attitude that pervades the whole atmosphere.

RedFrog offers Caribbean-inspired snacks like Jamaican wings and coconut shrimp. If you like your food a little hot, you definitely should try the Kicked-Up Conch Fritters. The fritters come with a tropical-island dipping sauce, not too hot, with a pleasant, acidic aftertaste. Combined with the fritters, the combined tastes just explode in your mouth. If you don't want to stay in the pub, you can get all the snacks to go. All dishes cost $3.33.

The only difference in the drink menu from the rest of the ship is a specially-brewed beer for the pub called ThirstyFrog. This is also the only place on the ship where you can buy enormous beer mugs that can hold a double serving of drink.

In the passage between RedFrog and Ocean Plaza is an air hockey table.

The Beaches Bar is the bar at the main pool. There are actually two bars, one on each side of the ship. One is a smoking-allowed area, the other is non-smoking.

Most drinks sold at the Beach bar are beers, frozen drinks, and mixed drinks. Of course, you can also get a shot of hard liquor, if you want, or juice and soda.

The Tide bar attends to everybody at the Tide pool, as well as Deli and Tandoor customers.

As in all other bars on the Magic, you can get frozen drinks, beers, soda, and water.

Vibe is for adults over 21 only. It opens at about 9pm every night and has different specials. Later it plays more club music, and gets packed. Smoking is only allowed outside on the deck. It is decorated with leather sofas, barstools and dimmed lights. The club is open until the last guests leave.

Mixed drinks, martinis, soft drinks, beers and wine are on the drink menu of the Vibe.

Cloud 9 Spa

Carnival Magic's spa, Cloud 9, is a huge, multi-chambered area. As with passenger cabins, the treatments come in variety of styles, from basic windowless rooms to ocean view rooms and even a VIP suite. The VIP suite is for couples and includes a bath. The standard treatment rooms are more basic. There's a massage bed in the middle, a sink, and one or two tables with creams and lotions. Some of the treatment rooms have showers and a great view. All rooms are quiet and decorated with soft, muted colors.

There's a thermal suite with a sauna and steam room, as well as a thalassotherapy pool (91 degrees warm) that costs $20 per day or $99 for the duration of the cruise.

Cloud 9 offers a full range of massages and other spa treatments. You can get a Swedish massage for $119 and a 50-minute hot stone massage for $149. Facial therapies such as a hydra-lift facial or a skin-specific facial are $119. Other treatments cost up to $169. For whole-body treatments, the spa offers cellulite reduction, cheek lifting treatments, seaweed massage, or a salt and ginger lime glow, priced between $125 and $259.

The full service beauty salon features hair styling, coloring, manicures, and pedicures. Conditioning and a 25-minute scalp massage cost $29. Manicures start at $29, pedicures at $45. You can get your hair styled from $35, or highlighted for $89 (depending on length of hair). The beauty salon also offers waxing, starting at $19 for little mustaches and going up from there. Men's services like beard trimming, hair cuts, shaves, and grooming are also available (starting at $15), as is a tooth whitening service (starting at $199 a session).

Cloud 9 has a thalassotherapy pool with ionized water, warmed to a muscle-relaxing 91 degrees, complete with jets to blast away the pain.

The minimum age to access the pool is 18, and you'll need a daily pass or special voyage pass ($20 or $99).

Fitness Center

Cloud 9 offers a fitness center fully equipped with free weights, treadmills, and circuit machines. In a separate area are stationary bikes for spinning classes, as well as aerobics, abdominal classes, yoga, and other classes. Most classes are complimentary, but Pilates, yoga, and personal training have a cover charge ($12 to $85).

The fitness center also offers seminars and nutritional consultations. For all those who love to work out outside, there also is an outdoor Vitality exercise course and outdoor weight lifting equipment at the SportSquare.

Carnival's Magic boasts lots of deck-top areas to lay in the sun and relax. The main pool, called the Beach Pool, is located mid-ship on deck ten. The second big pool, the Tide Pool, is on the same deck, behind the Lido, flanked by two huge whirlpools. Both of the pools are heated to 80 degrees and no deeper than 3 ft 8 in. It's a good depth for cooling off, but not large or deep enough to really swim. All pools are filled with saltwater, but you can rinse off in one of the many freshwater showers.

Around the pools are dozens of sun loungers, as well as access to deck 11, which offers even more space for a sun bath, as well as wicker chairs, tables, and large sunshades. On deck 15 (forward) is the adults-only area, the Serenity, with whirlpools and drinks service. The Lanai, on deck five, is a quiet sun deck with huge whirlpools that wraps around the ship. If you really don't want to see or hear anybody, decks 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 provide good spots: there are small sun decks at the very front of each deck, only accessible by going through the hallways.

Even though there are hundreds of possibilities to lay in the sun and cool off in one of the pools, sea days are busy and it might be hard to find a quiet spot.

The main pool is called Beach Pool and conveniently located near the Lido Marketplace on deck 10. It's the biggest pool on the ship, filled with saltwater warmed to about 80 degrees, and has two roofed pavilions with benches. No hot tubs, though.

Above the pool is Carnival's Seaside Theater, a 12-foot-high by 22-foot-wide LED screen showing movies, sporting events, concerts, and other special programming. The Beach Bar provides a never-ending, umbrella-covered supply of alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks. Being right next to the Marketplace and the Pizza & Grill, food is also never far.

There are dozens of sun loungers around the pool, but it's almost impossible to get a place here on sea days. Fair warning: it also gets pretty loud. If the pool area is full, there are more sun loungers, tables, and small wicker sofas on deck 11.

{{photo_gallery "Pool Area 1 Photos"}}

Located behind the Lido Marketplace is the Tides Pool & Bar. It's a little smaller than the Beach Pool, but flanked by two large whirlpools. Sun loungers are placed around the pool, overlooking the back of the ship.

The bar at this pool looks a little more polished than the Beach Bar, but offers the same drinks. In addition to the bar, you can get Indian food at the Tandoor or a sandwich at the Deli during lunch time.

{{photo_gallery "Pool Area 2 Photos"}}

Carnival WaterWorks

Carnival’s newest vessel has one of its biggest ever WaterWorks water parks, with two giant water slides. The Drainpipe swirls around into an enormous funnel; the Twister is shaped like a giant corkscrew. To get into both slides, you’ll have to climb steep steps. This may take a little courage if you're afraid of heights, but they're fun and worth a try.

According to Carnival, the “Splash Park” area of the WaterWorks water park offers the first water dump bucket at sea. It's probably not for everyone, but your kids will love it.

{{photo_gallery "Pool Area 3 Photos"}}

The Lanai is the wrap-around walkway on the promenade on deck five. There are dozens of sun loungers, four hot tubs and showers to get the sea salt off. On sea days, the Lanai turns into the Ocean Grille, where you can get sliders and hot dogs. There is no bar outside, if you want something to drink you have to go inside and get it.

There are sun loungers lined along the ship's walls as well as four whirlpools, freshwater showers, and wind breakers, so you don't get blown off the ship, if the wind picks up.

{{photo_gallery "Promenade Photos"}}

This adults-only area is located behind the WaterWorks water park on deck 15 (forward). It features two over-sized whirlpools overlooking the sea. In addition to padded shaded sun loungers and chairs, Serenity also offers large hammocks and comfortable, round-roofed wicker beach chairs for up to four people. Naturally, there’s a bar with drink service. Though it’s located in front of the water park, it’s the best place to spend a quiet afternoon in the sun.

Midships, deck 11, offers tables, wicker chairs, and sofas so you can watch the movies shown at the Seaside Theater. This sundeck doesn’t wrap around the whole ship — just from the mid-ships area to the rear area. Sun loungers are placed all around this area. Towards the far end there are stairs going down to the Tides Pool.

{{photo_gallery "Deck Area 2 Photos"}}

Forward Sun Decks

At the very front of the ship, on decks 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11, are hidden sun decks. Most are only accessible through the interior hallways.

{{photo_gallery "Deck Area 3 Photos"}}

The Carnival Magic has 11 bars, lounges, and clubs, all with a different decor, but pretty much the same objective: relaxation and fun. Most of the bars are located on deck five: the Ocean Plaza with bar and stage; the RedFrog pub; Play It Again piano bar; Spotlight Lounge; and Magic's only club, the Vibe. Carnival offers a lot of activities such as trivia, game shows, and karaoke in most bars.

Kids lounges and clubs are all located on deck four, and unlike on some ships adults can gain entry for a look around, provided no children's activities are going on.

The lounges have varying decors, with everything from vibrant to muted colors. Many offer live music in a variety of genres.

Play it Again Piano Lounge

Play it Again is a posh piano bar. The piano is on the far end of the area, surrounded by the bar and a huge, lustrous ball hanging over it.

You can sing along to the live music. It’s a fun, relaxed place to hang out. This is also the place for the “Friends of Dorothy” get-together, and where adult singles meet up. The piano bar has martini specials, along with wine and soft drinks.

{{photo_gallery "Lounge / Café 1 Photos"}}

Spotlight Lounge

The Spotlight Lounge is actually Magic’s second stage. It features comedy, magic, karaoke, live music, art auctions, and the always-entertaining murder mystery. It has a smallish stage and a comfortable interior with benches and padded chairs.

{{photo_gallery "Lounge / Café 2 Photos"}}

The Escape bar is the smallest of all bars, accommodating maybe 20 people. Several times a week, one of two close-up magicians entertain the passengers.

{{photo_gallery "Lounge / Café 3 Photos"}}

Magic Lobby / Internet Café

Above the lobby bar is a stage for live music. The bar itself is in front of the entrance to the Northern Lights, one of the main dining rooms. It’s very crowded in the morning on port days.

The internet café has several terminals with which passengers can access the web. It’s located between the Ocean Plaza and the Hat Trick Casino and open 24 hours. Carnival charges 75 cents per minute and packages are available (depending on the length of the cruise). The main internet café is not a separate room, just a few high tables with computers. However, Fun Hubs, as Carnival calls the terminals, are located all over the ship. You can’t miss them, as they’re indicated with a big sign.

{{photo_gallery "Lounge / Café 4 Photos"}}

Conference Rooms

There are three conference rooms, located on deck four. These can be combined to form one big room. If it is not used for any conferences and meetings, it's used for auctions and VIP get-togethers.

{{photo_gallery "Conference Rooms Photos"}}

Deck four is also where Magic's library is located, opposite of the Escape bar and next to the Northern Lights entrance. There are a lot of books and games in here, where families and friends can hang out. The room itself is pretty small, but the couch, a fun hub, and a bigger table for gaming make it all very homey and comfortable.

{{photo_gallery "Libraries Photos"}}

Movie Theater

Carnival's Seaside Theater is a 12 foot by 22 foot LED screen by the poolside on deck 10. Carnival shows sporting events, concerts, and other special programming during the day. At night Carnival shows feature movies like the Gladiator, James Bond movies, or Kurosawa retrospectives. Er, maybe not that last one.

{{photo_gallery "Movie Theater Photos"}}

The Warehouse

The Warehouse, Magic's video arcade, is on deck four, the same level as the kids clubs. It offers a lot of video games and air hockey tables. It's fun, but loud.

{{photo_gallery "Arcade Photos"}}

Carnival has a lot of group trivia contests, guess-the-song games, and card games (like bridge) organized throughout the voyage. The price for winning is always a trophy in the shape of the Magic. It's a remarkably coveted prize, as this is the only means of getting one. They don't sell them.

{{photo_gallery "Gaming Photos"}}

Lectures & Classes

The only classes are seminars, offered by the fitness center.

{{photo_gallery "Lectures / Classes Photos"}}

Smoking is not allowed in most of the casino. Only some slot machines and half the bar are smoking areas.

There are hundreds of slot machines in the casino. Keep an eye out for slot tournaments if you're feeling lucky. There are several poker, black jack, Texas Hold 'Em, and bingo tables in the casino. The casino has a few craps and roulette tables.

You can get drinks at the Hat Trick bar and food at the nearby Ocean Plaza or the nearby sushi bar.

There are three children areas on the Carnival Magic. Camp Carnival offers all kinds of activities for 2- to 11-year-olds, separated into three age groups (2 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 to 11). Circle C is a lounge just for teenagers from 12 to 14 with game consoles, trivia, scavenger hunts, and dance parties, just to name a few. Older teens (15-17) can hang out at the Club O2, which also has game consoles, and offers dance and pool parties — there are even teen-only shore excursions. Kids under 15 are supervised by educated staff.

{{photo_gallery "Children's Areas Photos"}}

Fun Shops of Carnival

The Fun Shops of Carnival sell perfumes, jewelry, cigarettes, accessories, bags, clothing, knickknacks, and souvenirs. Everything is duty-free when the ship is in international waters. There are a lot of sales (jewelry and accessories, especially) throughout the voyage, like a watch sale up to 40% off.

Cherry on Top

Cherry on Top is primarily a candy store, but it also sells wine, flowers, gifts, and knickknacks. The most distinguishing feature is the oversized gum machines.

Photo Gallery

At the Photo Gallery, passengers can purchase any pictures taken by the ship’s photographers. All the photos are exhibited on the walls, and may be selected on computer with one’s cabin card.

The waiters on the Magic were some of the nicest we've had in a long time. Not only did they recognize us immediately after the first night at dinner, they remembered preferences in food and drinks, like what kind of bread we wanted. Several waiters work in different venues during the day, so you'll likely run into them once in a while.

Our room steward was very nice and attentive. As we did have some problems with the inside room, he immediately called housekeeping and tried to help as much as he could. Given the size of the ship, the only ones who remember you are your waiters and the steward. Even so, Magic's staff didn't just try to be friendly, but seemed genuinely interested in us and our stories.

Most memorable of all is the cruise director, who made the funniest announcements and also hosted both the Welcome On Board and the Last Night on Board shows.

{{photo_gallery "Staff"}}

A ten dollar gratuity per day is included in the final bill. Stewarsd and waiters can be tipped on top of the gratuity, but all these tips go into a pot, which is distributed evenly. If you really like one of your service staff, it is better to give the tip personally, with cash.

Dress Codes

The Carnival Magic dress code is relaxed, with passengers encouraged to dress as they please in a range from casual to elegant. That said, the dining rooms do not allow flip-flops, open shoes (for men), shorts or swimwear. There are also elegant nights on all Carnival ships (depending on the length of your voyage).

Loyalty Programs

After ten Carnival cruises you earn Silver status, with some decent rewards and priority boarding.

General Safety

A mandatory life boat and safety drill is held on embarkation day. There are signs everywhere navigating passengers to emergency exits, life boats, and life vests. Defibrillators, fire hoses, and extinguishers are located all over the ship.

The health clinic is on deck zero. Hours of operation can be found in the daily Fun Times. Treatments cost $90, generally. They also sell aspirin and ibuprofen.

Smoking Regulations

On all Carnival ships smoking is permitted only in dance clubs and designated areas in the casino and the casino bar. All other indoor public venues are smoke free. Smoking is permitted in designated areas on open decks and in the staterooms. All outside smoking areas are starboard.

As a result of a guest surveys, Carnival is changing its smoking policy. Effective Dec.1, 2011 smoking will be prohibited in all rooms, being allowed only on balconies. Spa suites and rooms however, will remain completely smoke free, including the balconies. Passengers who smoke in their cabins will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee.

Prices were accurate at the time this article was published but may change over time.

About Carnival Magic

Step aboard Carnival Magic and you will know why she got her name. The 130,000-ton, 3,690-guest Dream Class ship made her debut in 2011 and has been thrilling cruisers of all ages ever since. Several enticing features were added during her multi-million-dollar upgrade in 2016, such as a casual burger joint, a sports area, a smokehouse for barbeque favorites, a Caribbean-themed bar, plus the first at sea serving private-label beer and a challenging ropes course that provides incredible views.

Big and beautiful, Carnival Magic is a floating resort, with a half-mile outdoor promenade deck that includes an indoor/outdoor entertainment area that stretches from one side of the ship to the other. Daily light shows can be enjoyed on a gigantic outdoor movie screen at the theater, as well as films and concerts. Nobody knows Mexican dining like a blue iguana. Well, our blue iguana, at least. That’s why it should come as no surprise that the BlueIguana Cantina features freshly made tacos and burritos stuffed specially for your enjoyment. Throw our homemade tortillas and salsa into the mix, and you have a casual dining experience that will make you say “mmmm” (which is actually Iguanese for “more, please”).

We went looking for someone to help us grill up the best burgers at sea, and we found just the guy. Carnival has teamed up with best-selling author, restaurateur and Food Network personality Guy Fieri to bring all the authentic appeal of a roadside burger shack to Guy’s Burger Joint, the cool poolside spot for hot burgers and hand-cut fries. Jogging track

Jogging track

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Ropes course

Ropes course

The chance to complete an awesome challenge, high above it all… now that's what you want in a good ropes course. An awesome ropes course, however, will let you do all that with a cool sea breeze and a view to match! Not sure that navigating a high-up-there challenge is for you? Did we mention that on this one you'll be safely strapped in, emboldening you to take on the kinds of challenges you may not normally feel up to? Here everyone — even kids — become thrill-seekers, testing their ability to make their way around the course, which features two levels of challenge, letting you increase or decrease the toughness as you go. So take to the sky!

Mini golf

Ah, imagine a perfect day out on the links, the golfer's zen of the ball, the hole and nothing in between but well-manicured fairway... plus one cactus, a treasure chest... and wait, is that a windmill in the way? Just who designed this course anyway? Whoever it was, they had one thing in mind — maximum fun for mini-golfers, big and small! That's precisely why you'll find a course on every Carnival ship, where you can hit the holes and take in everything you’d expect, like the sights and the sounds... plus the seagulls.

Fitness center

Fitness center

We have some bad news for you — your ship has a gym. In other words, there’s no excuse for leaving your fitness routine back on land. That’s great news, however, for your body, which will definitely benefit from all the extra energy that vacationing pumps directly into you. And let’s not forget the extra time you’ll have, since you won’t be waking up and spending most of the day at the office or anything like that. If those were some of your go-to excuses, we’re sorry, but we all know this is important. Why not treat yourself to some of our fitness classes — you might even have a little fun while you do something great for yourself!

Sauna

On a Carnival cruise, the vast and beautiful sea is all around you. You can do all the looking you want from the ship, but sorry — no touching allowed. (We’re sure you’ll understand.) That’s what the thalassotherapy pool at the onboard Cloud 9 Spa is for! Get your sea-water fix and soak completely in it, easily absorbing all the relaxing, rejuvenating benefits of the trace elements and vitamins you’ll find in nature. Oh, and here’s one thing you’ll only find in our special pool: water jets that massage and invigorate. Mother Nature’s great, but she can’t do that.

The salon

A trip to the salon is an opportunity to relax, to chat with others, to focus on yourself. It’s about more than just getting your hair or nails done… but it’s definitely about getting your hair or nails done! Even though you’re on vacation, you won’t have to settle for anything less than the salon style you’re used to back on land. And these good looks go beyond the usual — we even offer services like teeth whitening… great for taking those ‘I’m on vacation and I’m looking great!’ smiles to the next level.

The list of connecting cabins grades includes 2 beds (4E, 8P), 3 beds (PT, 6L), 3 beds (6A), 2-3 beds (8B, 8E, 8D), 2-4 beds (8A, 8F), and 2-3-4 beds (6M, 7C). Handicap staterooms (35 total) are in categories OS-Ocean Suie (1), Balcony (2), Oceanview (13), Interior (15) and Small Interior (4).

Premium Vista Balcony cabins are located around the ship’s aft corners and have same suite amenities (incl a wrap-around balcony). Extended Balcony cabins are in 2 grades – 8N and 8M (both with aft ship location). These staterooms have 50% larger balconies, 3 closets (in all grades balcony rooms), full bathroom (shower). Cove Balcony cabins feature floor-ceiling window doors leading to a private cove (partially enclosed) veranda.

Oceanview cabins have a picture window and twin beds don’t convert to king when both upper beds are in use. Some have a sofa and/or upper beds (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Spa Oceanview rooms are with obstructed views, and some are with upper bed (Pullman) for 4th person.

Some Porthole cabins have a sofa bed for a 3rd person, some Picture Window rooms have a sofa and/or upper bed (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Small Inside cabins have bunk beds (upper/lower Pullman beds), living area (vanity, chair), bathroom (shower).

All Carnival Magic staterooms offer as standard/complimentary amenities a living area (vanity, seating), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, bookings-reservations, Room Service ordering), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single sink-vanity, bathrobes, bathroom amenity basket/replenished upon request), custom-made beds (Carnival Comfort Bed System), beach towels, mini-bar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, complimentary 24-hour room service. The card has a designated owner and must be utilized for all money transactions on the ship as cash is accepted as a form of payment only at the casino. These cards are provided to all passengers (incl minors) immediately upon boarding the ship. Balance updates are provided at Guest Services desk (at any time). They can also be checked via the smart TV in each stateroom.

The ship’s interactive TV system allows passengers to purchase movies on demand, to order room service and to check the Sail & Sign account’s status. The on-demand movie list has approx 25 films available for ordering at USD 5 per movie. Adult-content films cost USD 10 per movie. Depending on satellite reception (Carnival Magic location at sea), the complimentary in-cabin TV programming includes the following channels: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN (Domestic, International, Espanol), TCM (classic movies), cartoons (Boomerang, CN), TNT, TBS. There are 2 complimentary movie channels showing a film every 3 hours (both starting at 12 noon). All guests can choose from a list of additional cabin amenities, among which are bathrobes, extra pillows, blankets, closet hangers. All guests can also specify how often the bed linens to be changed during the cruise. Your personal preferences can be selected from a services menu card left in each of the ship’s staterooms. Carnival Magic’s Theater Updated with New Lights

  • April 28, 2024

Carnival Magic Refit

The Carnival Magic’s 1500-seat Showtime Theater has been recently upgraded with the installation of 30 x new Robe PAINTE, 30 x LEDBeam 350 and 12 x miniPointe moving lights.

The new lights were installed while the ship was still in operation around Miami.

The refit saw the replacement of the original moving lights under the supervision of Carnival Cruise Line fleet supervisor for lighting Silviu Ardelean and lighting manager Alexander Nelson.

“We believe the PAINTE will be good for at least 10 years,” said Ardelean.

The lounge is located over decks 3, 4 and 5 of the Carnival Magic and serves as the ship’s main entertainment space. During the retrofit, the venue’s lighting was redesigned while maintaining the integrity and style of the original lighting design.

A Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone.

Carnival Cruise Line offers numerous cruise options worldwide with a fleet of 27 ships. Their cruises include all the hits: celebrity chef-driven restaurants, onboard rollercoasters, dedicated kids venues, serene spa moments, adults-exclusive pool decks, and exciting destinations. Carnival has it all — and can be relatively affordable. But which ship is right for you?

After sailing on eight Carnival cruises, including voyages on its oldest ship, Carnival Elation , and the newer Carnival Celebration, I’ve learned that sailing on newer ships is generally more expensive, and older vessels are more budget-friendly. However, I often consider more than the total cost before booking a cruise. I look at the ports of call, the space-to-guest ratio, the amenities and onboard activities, and the launch point.

When I select a sailing, I book through Carnival Cruise Line’s reservation number to see if I can snag an exclusive deal not listed online. Carnival's free-to-join loyalty program, the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club, offers deals like reduced deposits, onboard credit, and room upgrades. The more you book with the cruise line, the better your deals will be.

Before committing to a cruise, I break down the price per person per night, particularly if I need multiple cabins because I'm traveling with a group. I recommend you take advantage of Carnival's convenient 24-hour reservation hold, which displays the total cost, itinerary, and a countdown timer so you know when to purchase to secure the locked-in price.

Here, find guidance on every Carnival cruise ship, from the newest to the oldest.

Carnival Firenze

Inaugural Year: 2024

Ship Class: Venice Class

Ship Capacity: 4,126 double occupancy; 5,245 total guests

Standout Amenities: Amari bar for a peritivi and digestivi ; Serenity Adult-Only Retreat when you need time away from kids; and Pizzeria Del Capitano for hand-tossed pizza made with imported Italian ingredients

Originally debuted in 2021 as part of the Costa Cruises fleet (an Italy-based subsidiary of Carnival), the Firenze will set sail as a Carnival ship — with an Italian twist — in Spring 2024. Across Firenze , you’ll see touches of Italy; think cute cafe set-ups that look like they were picked up from a Florence sidewalk. Terrazza staterooms access a private sun deck with whirlpools and a bar. Carnival’s fan-favorite dining options and amenities, like Guy’s Burger Joint and WaterWorks, will be on board.

Carnival Jubilee

Inaugural Year: 2023

Ship Class: Excel Class

Ship Capacity: 5,374 double occupancy; 6,631 total guests

Standout Amenities: BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster rollercoaster; relaxing Cloud 9 Spa thermal suites with adjustable humidity and temperature; pickleball courts for challenging family and friends

Carnival Jubilee is the newest Excel-class ship in the fleet, sailing from Galveston, Texas. The massive ship offers Camp Ocean, the onboard kids club. Adults also have their own space at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat with swaying hammocks and a bar.

Carnival Venezia

Ship Capacity: 3,934 double occupancy; 4,977 total guests

Standout Amenities: The Gondola Lounge, themed after Venice's beautiful canals; a pool area with a retractable roof

Initially built in 2019 for Costa Cruises, this ship joined the Carnival fleet in 2023. Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks.

Carnival Celebration

Inaugural Year: 2022

Standout Amenities: Space Cruisers, a kids camp in partnership with Kennedy Space Center; The Golden Jubilee Bar for vintage cocktails; BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

Carnival Celebration is all about never-ending good times. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. If you’re looking to relax, it has that, too. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched.

Carnival Luminosa

Ship Class: Spirit Class

Ship Capacity: 2,260 double occupancy; 2,826 total guests

Standout Amenities: Carnival fan-favorite Alchemy Bar; Circle “C” tween club; Cloud 9 Spa hydrotherapy pool for rejuvenating soaks

Carnival Luminosa (formerly the Costa Luminosa ) is for you if you want to sail to destinations like Alaska and Australia. It also offers occasional itineraries through scenic transpacific spots like Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Japan. The ship has all of the brand’s classic amenities, like the RedFrog Rum Bar and Punchliner Comedy Club, plus an array of dining options, including sushi, pizza, ice cream, and an over-the-top brunch.

Carnival Mardi Gras

Inaugural Year: 2021

Ship Capacity: 5,282 double occupancy; 6,456 total guests

Standout Amenities: BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster for adrenaline junkies; Havana Bar for Cuban drinks and live music; Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and Brewhouse

Carnival Mardi Gras is a nod to Carnival’s first ship, also named Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972. The vessel has six onboard zones where families can have fun together, including the Ultimate Playground, where BOLT and the SportsSquare are located. Of course, there’s no Mardi Gras without New Orleans, so the French Quarter zone is where you’ll find Big Easy-inspired amenities like an Emeril Lagasse restaurant.

Carnival Radiance

Inaugural Year: 2021 (formerly Carnival Victory , which set sail in 2000)

Ship Class: Sunshine Class

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,873 total guests

Standout Amenities: BlueIguana Tequila Bar for great margaritas; ZSPA for teens who want a spa day; an outdoor gym on the ship's top deck

Carnival Radiance has culinary delights and family fun in spades. If you're a foodie, try Guy’s Burger Joint for loaded burgers straight from Flavortown or Shaq’s Big Chicken for the basketball star's incredible fried chicken sandwiches. Kids will love seeing The Cat in the Hat characters during activities like character parades, story time, and character breakfasts.

Carnival Panorama

Inaugural Year: 2019

Ship Class: Vista Class

Ship Capacity: 4,008 double occupancy; 5,146 total guests

Standout Amenities: Sky Zone trampoline park where families can bounce and play games; Skyride, a suspended bike on the top deck with great ship and ocean views; Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and Brewhouse featuring Carnival Cruise Line exclusive craft beers

Carnival Panorama is smaller than today's mega-ships, but it packs a ton of fun into its 15 decks. Rooms are spacious; some come with exclusive perks like access to the Havana Pool area or unlimited use of the spa’s thermal suites. Kids will also love that there’s an onboard waterpark, kids club, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea.

Carnival Sunrise

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,973 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa cabins with access to the thermal suites; Lucky Bowl restaurant, which is only on Carnival Sunrise and only open for lunch

Carnival Sunrise  (formerly Carnival Triumph ) features an exciting splash zone for kids and a piano bar where adults can sing along to their favorite songs all night. The ship sails on two to five-night and six to nine-night cruises from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas.

Carnival Horizon

Inaugural Year: 2018

Ship Capacity: 3,960 double occupancy; 4,977 total guests

Standout Amenities: IMAX movie theater for a family night out; Dr. Suess Bookville for family story time and character appearances; volleyball court where adults can test their skills or just hit the ball around

Carnival Horizon has all the makings of a fun family vacation. The kids clubs have dedicated counselors who ensure children are always having fun, and parents can slip away to an adults-only bar for a cocktail or the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat to catch some sun. Then, as night falls, you can come back together for a special meal in the main dining room or JiJi Asian Kitchen, which specializes in regional Asian cuisine.

Carnival Vista

Inaugural Year: 2016

Standout Amenities: The thrilling SkyRide suspended bike for great ship and sea views; Thrill Theater for a 3-D show with water, lighting, wind, and chair movement effects; RedFrog Pub & Brewery, the first brewery at sea in North America

Carnival Vista is perfect for new cruisers. Sailings range from two to nine days out of Port Canaveral, so you can get a taste of what a cruise is like without committing to a more traditional weeklong sailing. Expect an onboard brewery, incredible restaurants, and family-friendly fun.

Carnival Sunshine

Inaugural Year: 2013

Ship Capacity: 3,002 double occupancy; 3,758 total guests

Standout Amenities: Carnival WaterWorks with multiple slides and water features; BlueIguana Tequila Bar for poolside libations; an onboard steakhouse with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its exceptional wine list

Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny ) is 10 years old and a fan favorite. The lower guest capacity, at just over 3,000 for double occupancy, means you won’t have to fight hoards of people to get to and from activities. Families who want even more cabin space should book one of the aft-view extended balcony rooms with great wake views and ample private outdoor space.

Carnival Breeze

Inaugural Year: 2012

Ship Class: Dream Class

Ship Capacity: 3,690 double occupancy; 4,724 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa for next-level relaxation; Mongolian Wok lunch restaurant; pickleball courts to get competitive with your family; waterslides

Carnival Breeze is ideal for a short cruise out of Galveston, Texas. The ship has plenty of activities throughout the day, including bingo, trivia, and live performances in the comedy club.

Carnival Magic

Inaugural Year: 2011

Ship Capacity: 3,690 double occupancy; 4,724 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa; a thrilling ropes course; Chef’s Table dining experience

Carnival Magic sails for a week or more from Miami, Florida. The ship debuted the restaurant Cucina del Capitano, which is now onboard multiple ships in the fleet. It’s also home to the original Guy’s Pig & Anchor. I sailed the Carnival Magic years ago, but I vividly remember spending an entire day enjoying the amenities at the Cloud 9 Spa and eating at the Mongolian Wok quick-service restaurant almost every afternoon for lunch.

Carnival Dream

Inaugural Year: 2009

Ship Capacity: 3,646 double occupancy; 4,631 total guests

Standout Amenities: Ocean Plaza, a multi-use entertainment venue that’s family-friendly during the day and a nightclub after dark; Guy’s Burger Joint for standout smash burgers; Cloud 9 Spa for adults to relax

Carnival Dream is known for exciting entertainment and food and beverage offerings, including Alchemy Bar, a vintage-themed cocktail "pharmacy." The ship sails from Galveston, Texas, on six to nine-day cruises. I loved playing the onboard mini-golf course.

Carnival Splendor

Inaugural Year: 2008

Ship Class: Splendor Class

Ship Capacity: 3,012 double occupancy; 3,734 total guests

Standout Amenities: Masala Tiger Indian restaurant, which is only open for lunch and only on this ship; a mini-golf course; a pool with a retractable cover

Carnival Splendor sails the Southern Hemisphere around Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific on cruises that range from two to 10 days. The ship has Carnival’s only quick-service Indian restaurant and boasts a pool with a retractable roof, so you can swim without worrying about the weather.

Carnival Freedom

Inaugural Year: 2007

Ship Class: Conquest Class

Ship Capacity: 2,980 double occupancy; 3,754 total guests

Standout Amenities: Space Cruisers kids program in partnership with Kennedy Space Center; RedFrog Pub, with Key West-inspired food and drinks; Dr. Seuss Bookville, a kids library that's themed after the famous author’s characters

Carnival Freedom is ideal for first-time cruisers because of the lower guest capacity and the smaller ship size. But don’t let the numbers fool you; this ship is packed with high-energy activities for all ages; from the kid's clubs to the casino, there’s no lack of fun to be had.

Carnival Liberty

Inaugural Year: 2005

Ship Capacity: 2,974 double occupancy; 3,576 total guests

Standout Amenities: Punchliner Comedy Club for family-friendly laughs during the day and adults-only fun at night; SkyBox Sports Bar to keep up with the big games back home; Mongolian Wok, a prime lunch spot with custom bowls

Looking to relax? Prefer a high-energy vacation? Carnival Liberty can do it all. Head to the main theater for enchanting live performances and shows every night, enjoy tacos and burgers on the pool decks, or find a lounge chair around the pool and soak up the sun.

Carnival Valor

Inaugural Year: 2004

Ship Capacity: 2,980 double occupancy; 3,756 total guests

Standout Amenities: Dive-in movies where you can catch a family-friendly flick under the stars; BlueIguana Tequila Bar for tequila and Mexican beer-based cocktails; Scarlett’s Steakhouse, where perfect steaks and impeccable sides await

Carnival Valor is almost 20 years old and still showing cruisers a good time. The ship's home ports are New Orleans, Louisiana, and Barcelona, Spain, and it offers two to over 10-night sailings. Don’t miss the epic Seaday Brunch, where you'll find all kinds of treats like huevos rancheros, french toast, loaded burgers, and chicken and waffles.

Carnival Miracle

Ship Capacity: 2,124 double occupancy; 2,680 total guests

Even though the ship is small, with a total guest capacity of 2,606, it’s ideal for a quick weekend away if you want a mix of relaxation and high-energy activities. I've sailed the most on Carnival Elation since the ship sails from my hometown of Jacksonville. Even though it's the oldest in the fleet, I love that the sailings are short weekend trips where I can sit outside in the sun enjoying a Guy's Burger Joint smash burger before heading inside to see a show or play bingo. And because the ship is so small, it's easy to navigate, and I always end up making friends with the delightful crew onboard.

Carnival Jubilee ship review: A guide to Carnival's third Excel Class cruise ship

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

When Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Jubilee debuted in December 2023, it became the third ship in the line's Excel Class , closely mimicking sister ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Although there are more similarities than differences among the three, Carnival has still found a way to make Carnival Jubilee innovative and fun by tweaking a few of the offerings.

The ship shares Carnival's "zone" concept with its two older sisters, meaning it has dedicated areas for dining, drinking, entertainment and outdoor fun, including Bolt, a top-deck roller coaster. The biggest differences on the newest iteration are in two reinvented zones, Currents and The Shores; respectively, they take the place of The French Quarter and La Piazza on Mardi Gras , and The Gateway and 820 Biscayne on Carnival Celebration .

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

On my voyage, the ship carried 5,676 passengers, plus crew. This meant it wasn't at capacity, but it still felt loud and crowded, and often was fraught with lines. However, the service was generally excellent, with an exceedingly friendly crew.

The vessel is also a ton of fun, featuring two new shows (one with a football tailgate theme and the other with an onboard wedding plot), plenty of daily activities and so many fantastic dining options — many of them free — that it'll make your head spin.

Here's the rundown on what you can expect on board so you can determine if Carnival Jubilee is right for your next sailing.

Carnival Jubilee overview

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee is a megaship, coming in at 183,521 tons and carrying up to 6,631 passengers at full capacity. It's tied with Carnival Celebration for the title of the largest ship in Carnival's fleet.

The vessel offers weeklong Caribbean voyages on a regular rotation from its home port in Galveston, Texas, meaning you'll find a healthy dose of Texas-style fun on board (more on that later). In fact, Carnival is so dedicated to keeping the ship in the Lone Star State that it had a Texas star painted on the ship's hull.

Carnival Jubilee's demographics run the gamut from families with young kids or extended family groups to groups of friends, couples and even solo cruisers (even though it doesn't have any cabins for singles). True to the rumors about Southern hospitality, the people on my cruise were some of the warmest and most polite I've ever encountered; fellow passengers were saying "excuse me," allowing others to go first in line and generally being more courteous than I've found on sailings from other places.

The ship is divided into six zones, where passengers can find a mix of bars, restaurants, live performances, water-filled fun and exhilarating activities like a ropes course, minigolf and, of course, the Bolt roller coaster . Here's a bit about each zone.

Carnival Jubilee zones

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Grand Central: This bustling area rises up three decks — decks 6, 7 and 8 — and replaces the traditional atrium found on older Carnival vessels. The focal point is Center Stage, a starboard-side (on your right when facing the front of the ship) secondary theater that's home to events like bingo during the day and song-and-dance performances at night.

Surrounding the stage are tons of seating options, as well as JavaBlue Cafe, which serves coffee and snacks; Cherry on Top candy shop; the Center Stage and Grand View Bars; and Bonsai Sushi and Teppanyaki. It also serves as an access point for the onboard shops, Piano Bar 88, The Punchliner Comedy Club and the Jubilee Casino.

Currents: Currents is one of the other main social hubs on Carnival Jubilee. It starts on Deck 6, just aft of Grand Central and features two new bars. The Golden Mermaid has gilded decor and a custom-designed mural depicting mermaids and lots of hidden Easter eggs (look for SpongeBob SquarePants references). Meanwhile, Dr. Inks, Ph.D., is a bar based on the fictional character Dr. Inks — an octopus with academic credentials. Both bars have excellent drink menus.

Also in the space is Emeril's Bistro 717, a New Orleans-style, for-fee eatery developed by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.

On the wall above Dr. Inks, window-shaped screens provide a show for anyone passing through the length of the Currents promenade area. Programming rotates between underwater adventures, nature scenes and even artwork produced by passengers and kids from St. Jude's Children's Hospital. For a better view, head up one deck to the Alchemy Bar.

The Shores: If the Currents zone is the underwater-themed area of the ship, The Shores on Deck 8 is what you get when you pop your head above the metaphorical surface. Inspired by boardwalks and beaches, The Shores offers two walk-up food counters: Beach Buns (Carnival Deli on other ships) and Coastal Slice (the equivalent of Pizza Pirate or Pizzeria del Capitano). Offset by colorful, blinking carnival-style lighting, the venues all but scream, "Step right up!"

Other venues in the area include the Marina Bar for cocktails and coffee, complimentary Italian restaurant Cucina del Capitano and for-fee seafood eatery Rudi's Seagrill, created by food pop artist chef Rudi Sodamin.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Summer Landing: From The Shores, continue aft on Deck 8 to reach Summer Landing. It's an indoor space that encompasses Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, a Guy Fieri barbecue joint with its own microbrewery and live music; the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which honors members of the military; and soft-serve ice cream.

Outside, the area continues with The Patio, which features a pool and hot tubs, and neighboring The Watering Hole, a bar that serves the space.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Lido: A mix of food and fun, the Lido zone fans out on decks 16 and 17 around the ship's main Beach Pool, which serves as the center of the action. Around and above it, you'll find outdoor movies, dedicated teen hangouts, a video arcade, a two-story version of the RedFrog Tiki Bar, cruiser favorite BlueIguana Cantina, extra-fee Seafood Shack and Street Eats street food.

On the upper deck is the popular Guy's Burger Joint, which is oddly set a bit farther away from the action on Excel Class ships. Farther afield on Deck 16, passengers can check out Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken restaurant or venture to Lido Marketplace, the ship's complimentary buffet.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The Ultimate Playground: If you're looking for alfresco thrills to keep you busy, The Ultimate Playground is the place to be. It comprises a miniature golf course, a basketball court, a ropes course and the line's signature WaterWorks water park, all of which are free.

Of course, the highlight of this zone is the Bolt roller coaster. It's an added-fee experience during which passengers (one to two people per ride) zoom twice around the track on a motorcycle-style vehicle that allows you to throttle up or down to a speed that suits you.

What I love about Carnival Jubilee

Grand central.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Grand Central is one of my favorite spots on board. Although it's often loud, busy and difficult to navigate, especially on sea days, it's a prime place to sit and people-watch. I found myself gravitating there repeatedly to enjoy coffee or a snack from the nearby JavaBlue Cafe while watching the cast from that night's show rehearse at Center Stage — something you can't usually do on other ships.

Plus, the space is a bit of a throwback to the days when interior designer and architect Joe Farcus was responsible for Carnival's ship decor. The decor is midcentury modern style meets '80s quirk, featuring a pink and teal color scheme, fun light fixtures and a bar with colored mirror accents.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

I'm not generally someone who cares about alcohol. Give me one or two pina coladas on a weeklong cruise, and I'm good to go. However, the massively creative options on the menus at both the Golden Mermaid and Dr. Inks, Ph.D., bars are absolutely worth a shoutout.

For the wow factor, the best drink I had was A Pearly Bubble. Found on the menu at the Golden Mermaid, it's a mix of gin, St-Germain liqueur, white cranberry juice, dragon fruit and lime juice. It was a bit too dry for me, so I didn't care for the taste; however, you won't want to miss the presentation, which involves a giant bubble atop the drink. It pops when you poke it, leaving behind a tiny poof of smoke.

For taste, which I know is subjective, my favorite is the Crimson Catch (Swedish Fish candy-infused vodka, lime juice, pomegranate liqueur, white cranberry juice and Swedish Fish candy). I prefer sweet drinks, and this hit the spot.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

It's not unusual for the line at JavaBlue to snake around the corner and down the hall at peak times. The staff members try their best to keep things moving, but if you don't feel like waiting 10-15 minutes for a cuppa, head upstairs to Deck 8's Marina Bar instead.

There, you can order any of the same coffee beverages you'll find at JavaBlue but in far less time. If you're feeling more like a cocktail, you can grab one of those, too. On my sailing, the bartenders were phenomenal and even remembered that I prefer non-dairy milk with my lattes.

Bolt roller coaster

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Cruise fans know that Carnival brought Bolt, the first-ever roller coaster at sea, to Mardi Gras in 2021. Carnival Jubilee offers the same ride — the third of its kind on a cruise ship — in the deck 18, 19 and 20 Ultimate Playground area.

Pay a fee to ride, and you (or you and a friend) can navigate two laps of twists and turns around the ship's funnel as you use the throttle and hyper-boost buttons to try to break the day's speed record. (Yes, you'll be timed, and don't forget to smile for a photo.) The ocean views from above are totally worth the cost.

What I don't love about Carnival Jubilee

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

There's no easy way to say this: The ship almost always feels crowded. If you want to enjoy it when it's not, you'll have to stay on board during port calls just to find some space to yourself. Many restaurants and walk-up counters have near-constant lines, particularly at the complimentary venues during peak dinner times every evening.

It's so common for JavaBlue to be backed up throughout the day that an easy-to-miss sign directs passengers to other locations where they can grab a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, lines at the onboard deli and pizzeria counters frequently snake so far down Deck 8 that they block the entrance to seafood restaurant Rudi's Seagrill. One night, as I was dining at Rudi's with some of my travel companions, we joked that the lines were dangerously close to melding with the line for the nearby guest services desk.

And it isn't just a problem with dining. I arrived 15 minutes early for a magic show at the Punchliner Comedy Club, and I couldn't find a single available seat in the entire place. On another night, I showed up on time for Family Feud Live in the ship's theater, and it was a standing-room-only situation. The sizes of the performance venues are generally way too small for the number of passengers wishing to watch the shows.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

My cabin had some of the best soundproofing I've experienced on a new ship in a long time — I had balcony accommodations near an elevator bank and heard nothing when I was in my room. However, a couple of passengers told me they could hear noise from Bolt in their balcony cabin on Deck 15.

Most other places on board seem to be excessively loud. Even on port days, when most passengers are ashore, the public areas are filled with loud music that makes it hard to find a quiet escape. Some of it is understandable. After all, Carnival vessels are known as the Fun Ships, but some of it seems unnecessary.

One example is the Dr. Seuss-themed Seuss-a-palooza Parade that makes its way through the Currents zone once per sailing. I happened to be sitting at a table in the area when the festivities kicked off. I decided to stay to see what it was all about, and I'm sorry I did. As costumed Dr. Seuss characters arrived, Carnival staff asked the children to scream solely for the sake of screaming. Ear-piercing shrieks reverberated throughout the space, which was also blocked off to passengers trying to pass through.

The excessive upselling

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Combining noise with the annoyance of hawking alcohol, the roving waiters visited every table at Chibang! — the ship's hybrid Mexican-Asian restaurant — one night while I was having dinner there. Their goal was to push Rumchata shots on everyone. Whenever somebody bought one, the waiter would demand that they yell "Shot, shot, shot!" before downing it. This was extremely disruptive and added to the already loud atmosphere.

One afternoon later in the sailing, two different crew members approached me a total of six times in less than half an hour while I was having lunch on the Lido deck. The first five times, I simply said, "No, thanks." After the sixth time, I had enough and told them nicely but firmly to stop asking me. I found the high-pressure sales tactics excessive and irritating when all I wanted to do was eat my meal in peace.

The inconsistencies

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Oddly, there were some discrepancies on board that I was surprised to see on a ship that's been sailing for several months.

The first couple had to do with differences between the Carnival HUB app and the daily Fun Times printed schedule. On one occasion, the app said Seafood Shack opened half an hour earlier than it did, while the paper version of the daily schedule had the correct information. Another time, the printed daily had the wrong theater show listed for that night; the correct one was posted in the HUB. On another day, the printed schedule was missing part four of a four-part show, which did show up on the agenda in the app.

In terms of food and drinks, I had a strange experience at Chibang! when I ordered spring rolls. Usually, they don't have meat in them, nor was meat listed as an ingredient on the menu. When the waiter took my order, he said, "Spring rolls with chicken." When I asked him about it, he said he could request for them to be made without it, but that doesn't explain why something with meat in it wouldn't have meat in its list of ingredients. If I were a vegetarian or vegan, it would have concerned me.

As for drinks, I ordered a Snapping Pop at Dr. Inks., Ph.D. It was completely different — different color, different taste and different presentation — from what I received when I ordered the same drink on a sailing two months prior. I was told the drink had to be changed for several reasons. However, the old ingredients were listed on the menu, meaning passengers weren't getting what they thought they ordered.

Carnival Jubilee cabins and suites

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee offers cabins in the usual varieties: insides with no windows or balconies, ocean-view accommodations with windows, balcony cabins with outdoor veranda space and suites that include additional perks. These include priority check-in, boarding and disembarkation; preferred dinner times in the main dining room; pillow-top mattresses; two large bottles of water and bathrobes; and extra square footage.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Within those categories, Carnival Jubilee offers three types of special cabins. First is Family Harbor, which offers nautically themed cabins that sleep up to five people and rooms that can be connected via an interior door. Families booked in Family Harbor cabins have access to a dedicated Family Harbor Lounge, which offers daily breakfast, snacks and drinks, as well as board games and TVs with a selection of movies and video games. They also receive a free night of babysitting in the kids club so parents can enjoy some alone time.

The second special cabin type is the Havana Cabana. Done up in bright, tropical colors, these rooms offer extended outdoor lounge space and private access to the Havana Pool and Bar area.

The third type is Cloud 9 Spa cabins. With calming seafoam green and yellow decor alongside extras like Elemis toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, these are some of the most relaxing cabins on any ship. These guests also receive priority spa appointments and free access to fitness classes and the onboard thermal suite.

Suites in all three of these special accommodation types also give passengers the suite perks mentioned above.

Excel Suites, Carnival Jubilee's highest-level accommodations, receive all standard suite perks plus additional ones. These include complimentary access to the private sun deck at Loft 19, priority cabana reservations at Loft 19, concierge services, guaranteed reservations at most extra-fee restaurants, free room service, upgraded toiletries, fruit and sparkling wine upon embarkation, a free soft drink package, free in-room movies, an in-cabin coffee machine and complimentary laundry service .

Standard amenities in all rooms include a queen bed that converts to two twins on request, bedside shelving with reading lamps and USB outlets, a desk and vanity area, a sofa or chair, a closet and drawers for storage, a safe for valuables, a house phone and a hair dryer.

Bathrooms feature a toilet, sink and shower with a door instead of a curtain. Complimentary toiletries are basic: bar soap for handwashing and dispensers of shampoo and shower gel mounted on the wall in the shower.

On my sailing, I stayed in a balcony cabin, which was elegantly decorated in neutrals with blue accents. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of storage space. I appreciated touches like ample vanity mirror lighting, adjustable shelving in the closets and a surplus of USB outlets throughout the room, including near the vanity and beside the bed.

Speaking of the bed, it was exceptionally comfortable, and I was excited to find that the TV across from it had a sizable selection of free movies (as well as newer releases for a fee). The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Dislikes for me include a shower door that opens toward you instead of into the shower, making the already tiny bathroom even tighter. I also didn't like the "SNOOZIN'" door hangers, which often got caught in my door when I closed it; I would've rathered a "do not disturb" button like many other new ships have.

I also would have liked a taller table on the balcony, but it only had room for two chairs (not lounger-style) and a small drinks table.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee offers 82 accessible cabins in a mix of types and categories: inside, ocean-view, balcony and suite, as well as rooms in the Family Harbor, Havana Cabana and Cloud 9 Spa categories.

Within those 82 options, there are fully accessible accommodations with access to both sides of the bed and rooms that are fully accessible with single-side access to one side of the bed, which work well for passengers who use wheelchairs and scooters. Ambulatory-accessible rooms provide accommodations for people who walk with the help of assistive devices like canes or walkers.

Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats.

There are no solo cabins on Carnival Jubilee.

Cabin cleaning is limited to once per day. Unless you specifically request your cabin steward to come at night for turndown service instead of earlier in the day, your room will be made up in the morning. Hang the "SNOOZIN'" card on the outside of your door, and no one will bother you — but your room won't be cleaned that day.

Carnival Jubilee restaurants and bars

Carnival jubilee food.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

One of the best ways Carnival provides value to its customers is through its food offerings. Complimentary dining abounds on Carnival Jubilee, and the variety of cuisines is impressive. You'll find more free options on Carnival ships than on just about any other fleet's vessels, and they're actually tasty. It's entirely possible to eat only food that's included in the cruise fare and not feel like you're missing out.

Excellent added-fee options include steak, seafood and teppanyaki, which might be worth trying if you're celebrating a special occasion or feeling like a splurge.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Dinner reservations are recommended for many eateries, even the main dining rooms. You can make them by visiting your restaurant of choice or by using the HUB app. If you don't make one, you might find yourself waiting 20 minutes or more for a table at peak times. If you make a reservation through the app, you'll receive a notification to report to the host stand when your table is ready.

In my experience, waiters were diligent in asking about dietary requirements and restrictions. However, it was disappointing to see that many menus weren't marked with specific options for vegetarians, vegans and people who can't eat gluten.

The ship has two main dining rooms: Atlantic Restaurant (Deck 6, mid) and Pacific Restaurant (decks 6 and 7, aft).

One of them is dedicated to passengers who select Your Time Dining, which lets you eat anytime between 5 and 9 p.m. (The dedicated YTD restaurant can vary by sailing, depending on how many people choose that option.)

Both serve the same menu for dinner, but only the larger Pacific Restaurant is open for Sea Day Brunch on sea days and breakfast (but not lunch) on port days.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

I very much enjoyed an omelet with hashbrowns at Sea Day Brunch and salmon during the formal night dinner in the Pacific Restaurant. I also had a wonderful time at two special events — complimentary afternoon tea and an extra-fee Dr. Seuss-themed Thing 1 and Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast — held in the Atlantic Restaurant.

Tip: If you're a vegetarian or a fan of Indian food, don't miss the daily Indian dish on the main dining room menu.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The buffet is the other free food option that's a staple on just about any cruise.

On Carnival Jubilee, the Lido Marketplace on Deck 16 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, but I found it largely uninspired and lacking in variety. The French toast I had for breakfast and the mahi mahi I had for dinner were tasty, but there are definitely better no-charge venues on board.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

A little-known fact is that, at least for the inaugural season, passengers can dine at Mexican-Asian restaurant Chibang! and the Italian Cucina del Capitano, both on Deck 8, for free. Cruisers with YTD can eat there for dinner anytime; those with set seating can dine there after 7:45 p.m.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

At Cucina del Capitano, I was exceptionally pleased with the spaghetti carbonara I ordered. The nachos and spring rolls are don't-miss items at Chibang!

Unfortunately, both the service and atmosphere at Chibang! are lacking. The space is simply packed with tables — so much so that there were only about two inches between my table and the one next to me, even though I was dining alone. It then took nearly 10 minutes for a waiter to bring me water and another 10 before someone came to take my order.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Also on Deck 8 are Coastal Slice and neighboring Beach Buns, which respectively replace the pizza and deli counters found by the pool on most other Carnival ships.

The former bakes several different types of pies nearly around the clock, and they're scrumptious. The latter whips up hotdogs, soups and a variety of sandwiches. (I was pleasantly surprised by the grilled ham and cheese.) Lines for both counters are often long, but I promise it's worth the wait.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Two great staples in the ship's outdoor Lido zone are the BlueIguana Cantina (Deck 16), where you can find yummy tacos and burritos throughout the day, and Guy's Burger Joint (Deck 17), which is the place to grab some of the best burgers at sea via Carnival's partnership with chef and TV personality Guy Fieri.

The breakfast burritos at BlueIguana are fantastic. My pick from Guy's is the Chilius Maximus — an 80/20 ground chuck patty with cheese, chili, onion rings and barbecue sauce.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Guy Fieri isn't the only celebrity affiliated with Carnival's free food.

Shaq's Big Chicken , a restaurant backed by basketball great Shaquille O'Neal (who is also Carnival's CFO, chief fun officer), is perfect if you have a hankering for some fried chicken. In addition to chicken strips, sandwiches and fries, the counter-service venue also serves breakfast. Do yourself a favor and try the chicken and biscuit combo with fries.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

If you're seeking a between-meal snack or light bite, try the JavaBlue Cafe on Deck 6 in Grand Central. The cafe offers a sizable menu of specialty coffee beverages and tea, as well as free and for-fee snacks.

Breakfast pastries, bowls and English muffin sandwiches, as well as all-day options like salads, sandwiches, wraps, empanadas and calzones, are complimentary; cookies, doughnuts, cupcakes and cheesecake cost extra.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

As a sucker for soft-serve ice cream, I was a frequent visitor to the three soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt machines on decks 8, 16 and 17. At some point, I lost count of how many cones I ate.

Since there are no toppings, I recommend you snag a bowl of dry Froot Loops from the buffet during breakfast, and stash them in your cabin to mix with your ice cream later. Or grab cookies from the buffet for a DIY ice cream sandwich.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee has so many places to eat that I ran out of time to try them all on my weeklong sailing.

I missed Fresh Creations, a salad station in the adults-only sun deck area on Deck 18, and Street Eats, a set of three street food-style walk-up windows on Deck 16 near the main pool. The walk-up windows include Steam Dream, which serves dumplings; Time Fries, offering creative takes on french fries; and Sizzle, a grill that specializes in kebabs and other dishes.

Extra-cost food

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

My favorite onboard dining experience of the whole sailing was at Emeril's Bistro 717 in the Currents zone on Deck 6. A version of this chef Emeril Lagasse-affiliated spot is on each of Carnival's Excel Class ships, bearing the hull number of the original vessel for which the new one is named. Simply walk up to order at the counter, have a seat and a waiter will take over from there.

During my visit, I ordered a pound of stone crab claws in garlic butter (market price) with red beans and rice ($3) and a brie bowl ($6). The food was fabulous, and the service was friendly. My only complaint is that, apart from a claw cracker, there were no other tools available to get to the crab meat. (I asked.) My waiter had no bibs or wet wipes to offer, which left me a bit messy afterward.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The food item I most recommend you try when sailing on Carnival Jubilee is an order of beignets at Emeril's. Pillows of soft fried dough coated in powdered sugar with chocolate and strawberry sauces for dipping are $5 for an order of six.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

My second favorite experience was a calm, quiet and uncrowded lunch at Bonsai Sushi on Deck 8. I partook in edamame ($3) and a California roll ($8). It was fresh, tasty, filling and reasonably priced.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Another excellent dinner during my voyage occurred at Rudi's Seagrill (Deck 8), an upscale seafood restaurant named for chef and pop artist Rudi Sodamin. The lobster macaroni and cheese was the perfect indulgence to start my meal, and I followed it up with a delicious crab cake.

I wasn't overly hungry when I sat down, but the $49 cover charge ($15 for kids) would also have included a soup or salad and a dessert if I had wanted them.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

No Carnival sailing would be complete for a carnivore without a visit to Fahrenheit 555, the onboard steakhouse . On Carnival Jubilee, it's adorned in neutral tans, dark browns and red tones.

The menu has several types of meat — including steak, of course, as well as lamb chops and chicken — and seafood items like fish and lobster tail. I went with a 9-ounce filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection. It came alongside several sauces and sides of broccoli and crinkle-cut fries for $49 ($15 for kids).

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

My two most disappointing extra-fee food encounters on Carnival Jubilee were Seafood Shack (Deck 16, in the Lido zone, near the pool) and room service.

The first one opened late, and despite my order being the first one of the day, it still took more than 20 minutes to be served. I chose a single crab cake for $15. When I received it, the bun was soggy, and no garnishes or sauces were offered until I went back to the counter to ask for coleslaw and tartar sauce, neither of which helped the flavor.

It didn't hold a candle to the crab cake from Rudi's, and I ended up abandoning most of it.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Room service, which comes with a la carte fees (except for free Continental breakfast), set me back almost $20 for a chicken quesadilla, chicken fingers with curly fries and a chocolate chip cookie, which I ordered sometime around 2 a.m.

Everything arrived quickly and at the right temperature. The fries and cookie were great, but the chicken fingers were rubbery and full of gristle. When I tried to order the quesadilla without chicken, I was told they were already made, which seems strange. Shouldn't room service be made to order?

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Again, I couldn't fit every single restaurant into my time on Carnival Jubilee, so I missed out on Bonsai Teppanyaki, where chefs grill your food right in front of you, complete with corny jokes. I also missed Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, another Guy Fieri creation that serves barbecue fare, wings and microbrewed beer made right on the ship (lunch is free). I couldn't make it to Chef's Table, an exclusive multicourse small-group dining experience that's the most pricey meal on board, either.

Carnival Jubilee bars

Drinks are priced individually unless you have a Cheers beverage package that includes alcohol.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

My favorite bar on Carnival Jubilee is the Marina Bar in The Shores zone on Deck 8. It offers a menu of adult beverages, but it also serves the same specialty coffees you'll find at JavaBlue, which often has a long line.

This nautically themed outpost is next to a popular access point to the outer decks, so the only downside is that you might be blasted with hot air while your drink is being made.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Unique to Carnival Jubilee are two new bars in the Deck 6 Currents zone.

The Golden Mermaid is a nod to treasures one might expect to find under the sea, and a mural on the opposite wall depicts underwater scenes, including mermaids. (For some "Where's Waldo"-style fun, try to spot a miniature likeness of the ship, a pair of custom sneakers and references to SpongeBob SquarePants.)

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The menu of drinks is noteworthy, too, featuring names like From Far Seas and Atlantis Potion. My favorite, though, is A Pearly Bubble — a blend of gin, St. Germain liqueur, white cranberry juice, lime juice and dragon fruit that's as much for show as it is for taste.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The second new bar is Dr. Inks, Ph.D. In addition to a fun selection of cocktails — some of which involve candy — the bar's theme is tied to an animated octopus named Dr. Inks. She has a Ph.D., pet butterflies and extensive collections of both books and fashionable eyewear. Every so often, she'll appear on the screens above the area to chat.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Cruiser-favorite Alchemy Bar — where white-coated apothecaries prescribe drinks to heal what ails you (try the Cucumber Sunrise) — and the bar at Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse returned to Carnival Jubilee after finding success on other Carnival ships.

Besides beer that's brewed right on board — which you can order by the glass, flight or growler, or in cocktails — you can snag one of several whiskies or interesting cocktails like a smoky watermelon margarita and a black bourbon fizz. I tried a bacon Manhattan, but the taste wasn't my favorite. I also wasn't impressed with how long it took a bartender to ask for my order, especially since it wasn't particularly crowded.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

I'm not a huge drinker, so I didn't personally try cocktails from the Center Stage Bar (Deck 6) or Grand View Bar (Deck 7) in Grand Central. The former features a bit of a retro vibe, and the latter is backed by a giant light-up wall that looks like wave.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

I also missed out on the RedFrog Tiki Bar, a two-deck (decks 16 and 17), hut-style setup that replaces the RedFrog Rum Bar found on many other Carnival ships' pool decks. It's where you'll find the most quintessentially tropical menu of mixed drinks on board.

Other outdoor bar options include The Watering Hole near Summer Landing on Deck 8, the Serenity Pool Bar on Deck 18 in the adults-only area and the Loft 19 Bar on the exclusive Loft 19 sun deck. (Access is free for passengers booked in suites or anyone who reserves a cabana for anywhere from $250 to $500 per day.)

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories. Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost.

Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members.

Carnival Jubilee entertainment

Carnival jubilee activities.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee offers a full roundup of daily activities on each voyage.

Passengers might choose to head to the casino, play bingo, enjoy an alcohol tasting, participate in a sports tournament, go on a digital scavenger hunt, mingle at a deck party, play minigolf, take a dance class, learn towel folding, or attend a spa, jewelry or shopping seminar.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Particularly notable are the rotating animations that pop up throughout the Currents zone during each voyage.

If you show up during "Soundwaves Jukebox," you'll see synthesizer-like graphics pulsating to the music on the giant screens above the space.

"Change the Currents" will allow you to view underwater scenes from different areas of the world, including the Arctic and swampy Everglades; other experiences take you on an underwater adventure in a submarine and display ocean-themed artwork drawn by kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Some of my personal favorite pastimes on board included trivia, pool deck movies, for-fee culinary classes and a particularly relaxing massage. (Watch out for discounts early in your sailing or on port days.)

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

In addition to treatments, the Cloud 9 Spa offers salon services and a thermal suite — access to which is free with the purchase of a pass or a spa treatment — with a thalassotherapy pool, heated tile loungers, a sauna and two steam rooms. The adjacent fitness center is on the small side but features for-fee personal training and organized fitness classes, as well as equipment that's free for passengers to use.

If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools.

There's the Havana Pool (private access for cruisers staying in Havana Cabanas) and the Patio Pool, both on Deck 8 (the latter with hot tubs); the Beach Pool and Tides Pool on Deck 16 (also with hot tubs); and the Deck 18 adults-only Serenity Pool (with hot tubs). There's also a hot tub at Loft 19 on Deck 19, which charges a fee for access.

Cabanas are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices vary by sailing, but on my voyage, they were $500 per day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pool lifts accommodating up to 300 pounds are available for passengers with limited mobility.

On Deck 18, you'll find Waterworks, which offers waterslides and a splash area for kids.

Kids and adults who aren't afraid of heights will enjoy the top-deck ropes course, which offers two options for different levels of skill and bravery. The Bolt roller coaster, a minigolf course and a basketball court are also found in the SportSquare area within the Ultimate Playground zone.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Additional activities for youngsters take place in Camp Ocean, Carnival's kids club , which splits children into four groups: Turtles (up to 2 years old), Penguins (2-5), Stingrays (6-8) and Sharks (9-11).

Fun pursuits on the daily schedule might include arts and crafts, themed parties, science experiments, games and story time, depending on the age group.

Camp Ocean also has an interactive space wall, where astronauts lead kids on virtual expeditions, complete with a ceiling that lights up like the night sky to show the constellations.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Kids can also attend Build-A-Bear workshops, march along in a Dr. Seuss-themed parade led by the Fox in Socks and Thing 1 and Thing 2, and listen to the Cat in the Hat read stories.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Tweens and teens have their own dedicated hangout spaces. Activities here are less structured, and participants can come and go as they please. Plus, an onboard arcade offers video games for a fee.

Carnival Jubilee shows

Entertainment on Carnival Jubilee is a combination of passenger favorites from other ships and new shows that you'll only find on this vessel.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Of the performances, I most enjoyed two main-theater shows that are also found on some other ships in the fleet. "Celestial Strings" is a mix of classical and modern pop instrumentals partnered with ethereal costumes and sets; "Soulbound" is a song-and-dance performance with a Victorian steampunk vibe, set in what feels like New Orleans, during which a soul-stealer tries to mess with a twisted love story.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Another excellent show is "Rio Carnival," which occurs at Center Stage in the Grand Central zone instead of the main theater. Although the first half felt a bit shaky and slightly boring to me, the second half redeemed it all, featuring a parade of dancers and aerialists dressed in flamboyant costumes synonymous with Rio de Janeiro's Carnival.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The ship's two new shows are just OK. The first, "Dear Future Husband," is a song-and-dance theater show with a plot that involves a couple taking their closest friends on a cruise for a combination bachelor/bachelorette party and wedding. Musical numbers befit the wedding theme and include Bruno Mars' "Marry You" and, of course, Meghan Trainor's "Dear Future Husband."

After the performance, a "reception" (read: dance party with a DJ and visits from the cast) is held in one of the ship's public areas. When I saw this show several months ago, the reception was in the Limelight Lounge. On this more recent voyage, Dr. Inks, Ph.D., served as the reception location.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The second new show is the "Lone Star Tailgate." Drawing on Texas' love for all things football, Carnival has created four indoor/outdoor "quarters" of fun to mimic the four quarters of a football game. When I sailed, the first quarter, which is all about pool deck games for kids, was held on one sea day, and the other three were held on another sea day.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The second quarter involves pool deck games where passengers have to dress up in football gear to complete team races.

During "halftime," the ship's theater singers and dancers put on a show on the pool deck, dressed in team colors to support the fictional Carnival University — the team cruisers are supposedly cheering on during the festivities.

The third and fourth quarters occur in the Summer Landing zone; passengers can rope hay bales, participate in a hot wing-eating contest at Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse and follow it up with music from a live band.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Don't miss the audience participation-style game shows like "Family Feud Live," "Deal or No Deal" and the "Love & Marriage Show." The first pits two family teams against one another to guess popular answers to survey questions; the latter tests couples to see how well they know one another, often resulting in hilarious answers.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Other entertainment during my sailing included several day and nighttime comedy acts, an absolutely phenomenal magic show (be sure to arrive at the Punchliner Comedy Club at least 30 minutes early or you won't find a seat) and "We Are One," a farewell show that focuses on togetherness.

Carnival Jubilee itineraries and pricing

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Through at least April 2026, Carnival Jubilee offers two seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries out of its Galveston home port on a regular rotation. Both types of sailings begin and end in Galveston and visit Mahogany Bay in Roatan and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico with three sea days mixed in. The only difference between the two itineraries is the order in which the port calls and sea days occur.

At the time of publication, prices started from $709 per person ($101 per person per night) for an inside cabin or $919 per person ($131 per person per night) for balcony accommodations.

What to know before you sail on Carnival Jubilee

Required documents.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

If you're a U.S. citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in a U.S. port, you'll need a current passport or an official copy of your birth certificate and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification to sail. A few other forms of identification, such as a passport card, also are acceptable.

Passports must be valid for at least six more months. For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport. Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality. All this said, we recommend checking Carnival's website before sailing for up-to-date requirements.

Carnival Jubilee passengers will automatically have $16 per person per day added to their onboard bills. Cruisers staying in suites will pay $18 per person per day. (Children younger than 2 are exempt from gratuities.) An 18% gratuity is also added to bar and cafe bills, spa treatments and the cover charge of the Chef's Table.

Carnival Wi-Fi is generally fast and reliable, and Jubilee features StarLink connectivity. However, don't be surprised if you find yourself repeatedly and automatically disconnected, which is annoying.

Packages have increased significantly in price in recent years, and each plan is only for one device. (You can log out of one and into another with the same account, but you can't connect more than one simultaneously unless you buy additional plans.)

Three package tiers are available: Social (access to most social media and airline websites and apps for $18 per day or $126 for a weeklong cruise), Value (same as Social, plus access to financial and news websites and apps for $23 per day or $161 for a week) and Premium (everything from the Social and Value packages plus Skype access and video calling for $25 per day or $175 for a week). Passengers can also choose 24 hours of Premium access for $35.

Carnival claims that its packages don't allow FaceTime, iMessage or streaming from popular apps like Netflix and Hulu. However, TPG writers have had success using all of those services with the Premium package.

Carnival Jubilee is also the first ship in the fleet to offer 5G cellphone connectivity, which means faster speeds when you connect using your cellphone's plan. But be warned: If you don't have a special plan that allows you to connect at sea without roaming, you could be looking at hefty fees when you return. Generally, it's best to keep your phone in airplane mode when you sail.

Carry-on drinks policy

Passengers can carry on one bottle of wine or Champagne per person (21 years and older); this will incur a $15 corkage fee for consumption in public areas. Each person can also bring up to 12 standard cans or cartons of nonalcoholic beverages like juice or soda. Alcohol-free drinks in plastic and glass bottles aren't allowed.

Related: Can I bring my own alcohol on a cruise ship?

Smoking policy

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is allowed but only in designated outdoor areas on Deck 8 mid-ship on the starboard side. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the casino, but it's for cigarettes only. All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies.

Related: Cruise line smoking policies

Carnival Jubilee has self-service pressing rooms on decks 4, 5, 9, 14 and 15 with ironing boards and irons that are free to use. There are no self-service laundry facilities, though. Instead, passengers can send out their clothing for washing, pressing and dry-cleaning for a per-item fee.

Related: Everything you need to know about cruise ship laundry

Electrical outlets

Carnival Jubilee has standard North American 110-volt outlets in its cabins, as well as plenty of USB ports. In my balcony room, I had three standard outlets and four USB lightning ports by the vanity. There was also a USB port (non-lightning) on either side of the bed, just below the reading lamp.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

The currency on Carnival Jubilee is the U.S. dollar. The ship also operates without cash. Passengers link credit cards to their onboard accounts or put up a set amount of cash to charge against, using their keycards as a means of making purchases. The only time you might want to have some bills handy is for tipping your room steward, bartenders, room service delivery people, luggage porters or shore excursion guides.

Drinking age

You must be at least 21 years old to drink alcohol on Carnival Jubilee.

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Carnival Jubilee does not have a specific daytime dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine.

During the evenings, the official dress code is pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses and the like. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts are supposedly not permitted, but I saw plenty of them in the dining rooms during dinnertime on Carnival Jubilee.

Each weeklong cruise will schedule two formal nights — known as "elegant nights." If you're bound for the dining rooms, men are expected to turn up in dress slacks and a dress shirt, preferably with a sports coat or even a suit. The suggested attire for women on such nights is cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses. Passengers who wish to avoid dressing up can enjoy dinner in any of the casual eateries aboard.

Bottom line

carnival magic cruise ship amenities

Sure, Carnival Jubilee carries a lot of people, and it can feel crowded and cumbersome to learn your way around at first.

However, it offers new ocean- and beach-themed zones, delicious food, creative cocktails, friendly crew members, comfy cabins, outdoor thrills, Texas charm and a marquee packed with fun daily diversions and nighttime shows. You'll find it's an affordable Caribbean vacation that speaks to just about any traveler who enjoys a large-cruise-ship experience.

BARCELONA, Spain, (April 23, 2024) – In a spectacular celebration today at the Port of Barcelona, award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham officially welcomed the newest and most innovative Princess Cruises ship – Sun Princess – serving as godmother during a star-studded naming ceremony.

The time-honored maritime tradition took place onboard Sun Princess in the all-new Princess Arena and Waddingham, alongside the ship’s Captain Craig Street, joyously pronounced, “I name this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” She then released the celebratory bottle of Champagne to smash against the ship wishing good fortune to all of the ship’s guests and crew sailing to incredible destinations all over the world.

“Hannah is globally admired and adored for her immense talent and determination. Those qualities coupled with her family’s deep connection and love for the sea make her the perfect godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We are honored that she has joined us for this pinnacle moment, and that she will remain a treasured part of the ship’s legacy forever.”

Known for her adored role as Rebecca Welton in “Ted Lasso,” Waddingham said being named Sun Princess godmother is a “pinch me” moment as she joins an esteemed group of women, including members of the Royal Family, who have also served as godmothers to Princess ships: Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984); Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006); among many notable celebrities and dignitaries.

Waddingham grew up boating and has fond memories of weekends in Dunkirk. In addition, her grandfather served in the Royal Navy during World War II.

“As much as theatre has always rippled through my bloodstream so too has a strong, historic familial connection with the Royal Navy and all things nautical,” said Waddingham. “I have of course seen over the years the iconic godmothers who have been asked to represent these magnificent ships and looked on in awe. It is therefore such a great privilege to have been asked to act as Godmother to the Sun Princess, first of her class. I can’t quite believe it.”

Actor and magician Michael Carbonaro served as master of ceremonies for the event, and joined by a host of celebrities and TV personalities including Tyra Banks, Romero Britto, Randy Fenoli, Jeff Corwin, Rob Floyd, along with celebrated chefs Dario Cecchini, Makoto Okuwa, and beloved original “Love Boat” cast members Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac) and Bernie Kopell (Doc).

In addition, Natasha Bedingfield was on hand to fittingly perform her smash hit “Pocket Full of Sunshine,” along with other award-winning hits including “Unwritten.”

What’s New, What’s Next Princess to Add Ship-within-a-Ship Concept to Sun Princess, Star Princess  Sanctuary Collection Debuts in September Prior to the Sun Princess naming ceremony, Princess President John Padgett shared a few details on what’s ahead for the world’s most iconic cruise brand. Notable news included introducing the exclusive, next-level Sanctuary Collection aboard Sun Princess, as the ship prepares to debut this select, all-inclusive oasis in October 2024. Guests reserving in the Sanctuary Collection will enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s top-deck retreat area, along with many additional bespoke events and high-end amenities designed to enhance their voyage.

Star Princess to Sail Alaska Voyages in Summer 2026 Also announced, the next Sphere-Class ship, Star Princess, will sail her first full summer in 2026 in Alaska, making it the first of its class to ever sail to the Great Land. Star Princess is currently under construction and scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean in September 2025.

Princess Collaborates with Celebrities to Launch Love Line Premium Liquors Princess also revealed its newest indulgence - the "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection. Crafted in collaboration with renowned celebrities Pitbull, Jason Aldean and Romero Britto, this exclusive line of wines and spirits promises an unparalleled experience for guests sailing aboard ships from the Love Boat. The new premium collection features meticulously selected wines and spirits, each bearing the unique touch of its celebrity partner including Voli Vodka by Pitbull, Love Prosecco by Britto, and Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Jason Aldean. The Love Line collection is currently available aboard Sun Princess, and will roll out to all the ships in the Princess fleets throughout the summer.

Love by Britto Officially Debuts Aboard Sun Princess During the day’s festivities, Love by Britto, an artistic-inspired dining experience from world-renowned artist Romero Britto, made its debut. Known for his bold, colorful, and joyful style, and a global advocate for happiness, Britto has created a dining concept that serves as an exquisite showcase of the artist’s iconic and joyful designs against the backdrop of a boutique restaurant designed to immerse couples in a world of vivid colors, bold patterns, and heartfelt emotions. Unlike anything else in cruising, the venue also highlights the talents of Princess Cruises’ Head of Culinary Arts Rudi Sodamin who has created an array of tantalizing choices that embody profound passion, exquisite flavor, and boundless creativity with a seven-course, prix fixe menu ($149 per person) that begins with a flute of Champagne upon arrival and features luxury ingredients including lobster, caviar and truffles, and dessert options that always include chocolate fondue.
