Cedric Burnside
Sunday, 6th March 2022
- Entertainment
Cedric Burnside returns to Australia for the fourth time following his third Grammy nomination – a Best Traditional Blues Album nod for this year’s ‘I Be Trying’, which he recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, where Al Green cut his classic sides for Hi Records in the 60s and 70s.
Cedric is blues royalty. The grandson and longtime drummer of the late great RL Burnside, he carries the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues – with its commitment to polyrhythmic percussion and its refusal of familiar blues chord progressions – to new audiences around the world. These days predominantly a guitarist, Cedric plays stripped back, and sizzles like a live-wire. Cedric’s music echoes the past, present and future all at once and expands upon the traditional darkness of blues with themes of love and hope. You don’t know soul-stirring until you know Cedric Burnside.

For the initiated, Cedric Burnside is blues royalty. The grandson and longtime drummer of the late great RL Burnside, he carries the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues – with its commitment to polyrhythmic percussion and its refusal of familiar blues chord progressions – to new audiences around the world. Playing music his whole life, he has performed and recorded with countless musicians, including Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, Burnside Exploration, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, T Model Ford, Bobby Rush, Honey Boy Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Galactic, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion among many others.
Predominantly a guitarist in recent times, Burnside plays stripped back and sizzles like a live-wire. Burnside’s music echoes the past, present and future all at once and expands upon the traditional darkness of blues with themes of love and hope.
Burnside’s two previous Grammy-nominated album projects— the 2015 Descendants of Hill Country and 2018’s Benton County Relic—were both capstone statements for a lifetime of musical labour channeling the blues spirit on drums, guitar, and vocals in the North Mississippi Hill Country tradition.
His newest contribution and third Grammy-nominated album is I Be Trying , a 13-track album treatise on life’s challenges, pleasures, and beauty and another unfolding of his influence and voice as an architect of the second generation of Hill Country blues, released earlier this year. “Life can go any kind of way,” Burnside says. With almost 30 years of performing and living blues in him, he would know.
Recorded over three days at Royal Studios in Memphis (the home studio of Al Green and Hi Records in the 60s and 70s), this album is the ultimate statement of purpose for a critically acclaimed artist who has proudly carried the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues around the world. Over thirteen tracks, Burnside delivers his bruised but unfettered truth over blistering guitar and deep pocket drums—a sound birthed in his soul but developed and perfected on the road.
But no matter how far he travels, the righteous sound he makes could only come from one place. I Be Trying is the sound of modern Mississippi.
You don’t know soul-stirring until you know Cedric Burnside.

Cedric Burnside returns to Australia (thanks to the folks at Love Police Touring ) for the fourth time and this trip follows his third Grammy nomination – a Best Traditional Blues Album nod for this year’s I Be Trying , which he recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, where Al Green cut his classic sides for Hi Records in the 60s and 70s.
Cedric Burnside is blues royalty. The grandson and longtime drummer of the late great RL Burnside , he carries the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues – with its commitment to polyrhythmic percussion and its refusal of familiar blues chord progressions – to new audiences around the world. These days predominantly a guitarist, Cedric plays stripped back blues. Listening Through The Lens caught him at the Rockweave Music and Arts Festival in LaGrange Georgia in 2019 (somewhat sadly our last US festival before you-know-what). A remarkably authentic performance.
His latest contribution is I Be Trying , a thirteen-track album treatise on life’s challenges, pleasures, and beauty. “Life can go any kind of way,” Burnside says. With almost thirty years of performing and living blues in him, he would know.
Burnside’s two Grammy-nominated album projects— the 2015 Descendants of Hill Country and 2018’s Benton County Relic —were both capstone statements for a lifetime of musical labour channeling the blues spirit on drums, guitar, and vocals in the North Mississippi Hill Country tradition. I Be Trying is another important milestone for Burnside.
Burnside’s turn inward has him considering his place in the family legacy of professional blues musicians. He is a proud father of three daughters, ages 22, 18, and 15, all of whom can play drums and guitar, and is looking forward to more collaborations like the one with the youngest Burnside daughter on “I Be Trying.” Striving for transparency with his children about his own life, he lets them know not to be too hard on themselves. He says Big Daddy always took care of his family, including his thirteen children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Despite his touring schedule, Burnside is deeply grateful for his capacity to support and be present for his own children. About this, he says, “I have been there, and I will be there.” That’s for certain about the past, present, and future of the North Mississippi Hill Country blues, too.

As the grandson of Burnside and son of drummer Calvin Jackson, Cedric has been playing music his whole life. He has performed and recorded with countless musicians, including Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, Burnside Exploration, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, T Model Ford, Bobby Rush, Honey Boy Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Galactic, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion among many others. In 2006, he was featured in Craig Brewer’s critically acclaimed feature film Black Snake Moan , playing drums alongside Samuel L. Jackson. (The film is a loose tribute to R.L. Burnside, and gives many nods to the late bluesman.)
Burnside was Grammy-nominated in 2015 for Best Blues Album for the Cedric Burnside Project’s Descendants of Hill Country , and was the recipient of the Blues Music Awards honor as Drummer of the Year for four consecutive years. With his latest record BENTON COUNTY RELIC, Burnside showcases his electric and acoustic guitar prowess, recording the record in just two days with drummer/slide guitarist Brian Jay in the latter’s Brooklyn home studio. While Burnside draws upon a tradition that’s decades old,the tracks on BENTON COUNTY RELIC sound more immediate and cut deeper than any other artists recent attempt to interpret the blues.

Cedric Burnside - Dingwalls, Camden - 04/06/19
The annual Future Juke Festival of 21st Century Blues brought a select group of artists to the London stages from the end of May through to the beginning of July. The second of these was the award winning Cedric Burnside. The 40-year-old still calls Mississippi his home where he was raised by his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside. Cedric has the blues running through his veins, more specifically, the North Mississippi country variant which emerged from his homeland and has been knocking on his door from the day he was born.
This classy venue was packed to the rafters on a Tuesday night which was very satisfying especially as the very popular ‘Rockin’ The Blues’ gig was competing for punters and attracting many blues tinged rock fans less than a mile away.
The night intensified as it progressed, with Cedric opening the show solo, seated and demonstrating that not only is he an award winning drummer, his acoustic guitar work would have made his grandfather so proud. Although for the first half hour Cedric was seated there was real energy in the performance and indeed the songs which was fully appreciated by the respectful audience. He was completely at ease in this environment and he even took time out to tell a joke after a couple of songs. Earlier in the evening Todd Albright had given us a short but impressive 12 string acoustic set and Cedric invited him back to join him on stage for one number.
You can tell immediately that Cedric Burnside is the real deal, especially if you are a fan of North Mississippi country blues with an edge. He satisfied the old school blues fans who insist on traditional blues and nothing less with his opening solo acoustic set and also brought the blues alive for a new generation of fans brought up on the likes of White Stripes, Black Keys and more recently Picturebooks. To this end, Burnside increases the intensity and goes electric. Burnside’s compatriot Brian Jay is introduced to the proceedings and warms the drum stool for what will bring this show to a cracking climax. I have seen many impressive drum and guitar combos, but these two impressed me more because they not only ignited the flame in their own performance but also brought the audience to life. With ‘We Made It’, the opening track from Burnside’s 2018 Grammy nominated album ‘Benton County Relic’, and without any vocal encouragement, perhaps it was the message on Cedric’s t-shirt that was having an impact, everyone in the room was adhering to ‘getcha groove on’; the place was buzzing and the audience forgot about everything else for an hour and thoroughly lost themselves in the groove.
The intensity found room to increase a notch further when Burnside and Jay switched positions. Much of Burnside’s musical schooling came in this very position when he replaced his father, Calvin Jackson, and began touring and playing drums with his grandaddy from the age of thirteen. He has been the the recipient of the Blues Music Awards honour as drummer of the Year five times, including three consecutive years to 2014 and being honoured again in 2019. Brian Jay on slide guitar and adding his own vocals whipped up the audience even more especially in the groove of ‘Wash My Hands’ and a cover of his grandfather’s ‘Skinny Woman’. Surely the night was still young, unfortunately not and this truly remarkable evening was brought to a close, back to the real world.
This was my first experience of catching Cedric Burnside live, although he is no stranger here in England. He expressed how extremely grateful he was to be invited back here so soon after his last visit and there is no doubt that he will be back, sooner rather than later hopefully.

Five Australians among 37 arrested over global phishing scam following international investigation
Five Australians are among 37 individuals who have been arrested in relation to an alleged global phishing scam that targeted tens of thousands of people, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said on Thursday.
Police said the scam involved 10,000 cybercriminals from around the world who used the platform LabHost to trick victims into providing their personal information, such as online banking logins, credit card details and passwords.
Among the victims were 94,000 Australians, they said.
Police arrested a man from Melbourne and a man from Adelaide, who they allege were both LabHost users, and charged them with cybercrime offences.
They also arrested three other men in Melbourne on drug offences.
Alleged offenders used 'persistent' phishing attacks: police
AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner for Cyber Command Chris Goldsmid said the Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre had made the arrests following an international "take down of a cybercrime platform".
"LabHost was marketed as a one-stop-shop for phishing," he said.
"Phishing is a technique used by cybercriminals to trick victims into providing personal information... in order to commit criminal offences or steal money.
"This is often done by sending texts and emails to victims containing links to fraudulent websites impersonating well-known organisations."
The AFP alleges LabHost was impersonating more than 170 fraudulent websites, such as "reputable banks, government entities and other major organisations, to trick unsuspecting victims into believing they were the legitimate websites".
"When victims followed the link, cybercriminals could obtain a range of sensitive information, such as one-time pins, usernames and passwords, security questions and pass phrases," the AFP said.
"Cybercriminals could then use victims' personal information to access legitimate enterprises, such as financial institutions, where they could steal funds from victims' bank accounts."
LabHost allegedly originated in Canada, the AFP said, to initially target North America.
It then expanded to include the United Kingdom and Ireland before going global.
Police said Australian criminals were among its three top user countries.
As part of the deal offered to users, cybercriminals would sign up to the website at the cost of $270 per month and would in return be given "phishing kits".
Police said those kits included "the infrastructure to host phishing websites, email and text content generation and campaign overview services, enabling them to effectively exploit their victims".
Phishing 'a serious threat'
The international operation involved 200 officers from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and the AFP.
Twenty-two search warrants were executed across five states, the AFP said.
This included 14 in Victoria, two in Queensland, three in NSW, one in South Australia and two in Western Australia.
Last year, Scamwatch received 108,000 reports of phishing attacks, to the tune of $26 million.
"LabHost alone had the potential to cause $28 million in harm to the Australians through the sale of stolen Australian credentials," Acting Assistant Commissioner Goldsmid said.
"In addition to financial losses, victims of phishing attacks are subject to ongoing security risks and criminal offending, including identity takeovers, extortion and blackmail."
He warned those using LabHost that they should not expect to "remain anonymous".
"We are working to identify anyone who has used this platform to target innocent victims," he said.
The AFP urged individuals to access information online to help them spot a phishing scam, including videos available on their YouTube channel.
Victims can contact police to report the attack, or visit cyber.gov.au.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
