Ratings and reviews

Location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

We came here for dinner, excited about the restaurant’s Michelin star and the promise of a delicious meal, and it definitely did not disappoint. We tried the 4-dish prix fixe menu, and every dish was elegant and refined, tastefully presented and helpfully (but not overbearingly... or condescendingly) explained. The atmosphere was classy, and the service was attentive (without being cloying). What a special experience! More

When we arrived (we always eat at the earliest reservation) we were given our choice of tables and we picked a round by the fireplace. What a cozy evening we had. Food was outstanding, service was impeccable and the wines my husband chose, with a... little help, were the best. It was hard to venture out in the cold night after such a warm reception from the staff and such delicious food and wine. It was a holiday meal to remember. More

Excellent staff whose presence enhances all the wonderfully innovative dishes. Each course offers a pleasing visual presentation which is further enhanced by the subtle flavors. Nothing is overwhelming -- we considered it a smooth journey through a variety of well considered flavors, all designed to... excite (and stimulate discussion of the various ingredients) the palate. The staff were very willing to pair wines to each course all of which enhanced the experience. This is a less formal service that doesn't shirk any of the attention that a great staff provides. Highly recommended - prepare yourself to be surprised! More

We came to La Tour after reading all the fabulous reviews online. The food was incredible, the stater and mains were fresh, well presented, well designed with huge depth of flavour. The desserts were less well put together, in particular the Apricot dessert being overpowered... by the basil Ice cream. The service really put a dampener on the lunch unfortunately. The service was inconsistent and confused. There was a clear lack of communication between the team. We ordered an aperitif, however the wine was poured despite still drinking the aperitif, so at the time we came round to trying the wine it was warm and unappetising. We were served amuse bouche and needed to ask for water and bread as well as a side plate for my husband. My plate was taken away from me whilst I was still eating. Following this the waitress brought cutlery for the main course, but we had to explain we hadn’t received the starter we had ordered. The main course arrived, but my husbands ordered was incorrect, the waiter took the dish back to the kitchen and returned with the correct one. We were asked whether we’d like dessert, to which we responded we would. Ten minutes passed without seeing a menu, then the waitress brought cutlery for the dessert, we had to explain that we hadn’t ordered our dessert yet. The waitress told us that someone had chosen the dessert for us already. We asked to see the menu and explained we’d like that one instead. The dessert arrived, but my husband again, received something that he hadn’t ordered. The kitchen rectified the problem quickly. However the waiting staff were unapologetic throughout. Compared to the timely and friendly service we have received at many restaurants of the same calibre across France recently, this service here really let our experience down unfortunately. Lovely food, shame about the dessert and the service. I would rate this very good on the food alone (save the dessert), but this option isn’t available on trip advisor unfortunately. More

This restaurant was so disappointing! We had a 5 course dinner with wine to compliment each course. Service First off, no cutlery that we had to ask for twice, Wine served too early before receiving our starter. To finish bread served to us that was... for the opposite table ( for celiac) Waiters dropping trays. No atmosphere and chaotic. Food First four courses bland. Dessert was really good and the cheese was nice. Wine Lovely Jules More

A truly exceptional meal. The staff were fantastic and the food was on another level. As a vegan I was catered for incredibly and my partner said his meal was the best he’s ever had. A must have experience if you are ever in Sancerre.... It’s not cheap but great value for what you get. More

Our lunch experience in this little and exquisite restaurant in Sancerre was amongst the best we have had in a while. Flawless from the warm greeting, all the way through to the calming surrounding, amazing cooking and caring service. We were delighted with our large... round table, and through generous table spacing, the full room is the testimony of its popularity. Congratulations to the chef and its team : Every dish was a celebration of taste and texture, from the gazpacho amuse-bouche to the chocolatine with the coffee. And of course the charming, professional and attentive service complemented with brio the experience. We’d go again without hesitation. More

We visited this restaurant for dinner. For dinner service the restaurant offers a “surprise” menu with a choice of meat or fish for the main meal. They did ask if we had any allergies or dislikes prior to serving us any meals. All of the... staff we encountered were really friendly and accommodating. My husband did the matched wines but I chose not to. The staff kindly matched wines to each course according to my taste. The dishes were plentiful, inventive with fresh local ingredients, and we found every dish delicious. We would highly recommend visiting this local gem of a restaurant. The food was superb but with a relaxed atmosphere. More

Unfortunately they were fully booked for dinner. Fortunately they had a couple of tables for lunch the next day. Absolutely fabulous meal, one of the best I’ve ever had. Amuse bouche then gazpacho followed by three courses and cheese. We also had the wine flight.... Just stunningly good food! Also incredibly well priced. I was expecting a hefty bill given all the extras and the quality of food and wine but lunch for two came to a total of 136 Euros! Worth every penny. Waiter indulged my poor French which is always appreciated and explained the wines. The chef came out and talked with us too. A fabulous meal which will be remembered for a long time. More

Ate here during recent holiday in France involving a range of restaurants and La Tour stands out as an excellent all-round experience. Service was attentive and helpful but never intrusive. Atmosphere was calm and relaxed and the quality of food and drink was excellent. Creative,... cooked beautifully and delicious, there was not a single dish that disappointed. Highly recommend. More

We unexpectedly landed in Sancerre looking for a restaurant, and saw la Tour by surprise, and what a surprise! We were put on the best table you can get in any restaurant, if they have one , the “chefs table “ from where we could... see the kitchen working like a clock to prepare the superb dishes. The Owner and Host Baptist is a true gentleman , and from the amuse, the two entrees of Tuna and also a delicate ravioli , oh and forgot the amazing gazpacho , cheeses and meat all was superb …. Not to mention the best Sancerre we ever had! WOW More

centre la tour

Every dish in the surprise menu was refined , with great combinations of ingredients, without being overly complex The beetroot ravioli, the tuna dish, the slowcooked veal ( 18 hours at 73 degrees), frome amuse bouche to desert with basilic icecream, a perfect symphony. Apparently... they lost their star for the service but certainly that too was made up: perfect attention and any extras one asked. A real treat. More

What a waste of over 135 Euros! Disappointing service. Food arrived long before the server came to tell us what it was. No set menu. We were asked only if we wanted 'fish' or 'meat'. No advanced explanations for the plates that were presented to... us. More

Nice decor, « surprise » menu that did indeed have some imaginative touches and an occasional touch of genius. Carrot with Rhubarb purée was a great idea, but maybe it needed more choice carrots and more emphasis on the rhubarb which was delicious but lost. The asparagus... with Physalis was a mark of genius, 5 ⭐️ The fois gras with framboises also even if it wasn’t seasonal to use raspberries. The duck was perfection And the intense and unusual celery ice-cream a delight. This doesn’t allow me to add an extra 1/2 star which it deserves but I don’t like to give 5 stars lightly especially when it comes at a quite high price. Recommended More

We recommend to book this restaurant if staying in Sancerre as you would not want to miss having dinner there. The menu on offer last night was a menu du surprise, and each course, each mouthful was amazing, such fantastic flavours, combinations of ingredients, that... each course surpassed the previous one. The chef certainly knows how to cook!!! The service was excellent, not pompous, but very friendly, and the tables are very well spaced apart. We will definitely return, and we would definitely book, (which you can do online) so as not to be disappointed More

Michelin guide’s point of view.

Nestling at the foot of a 14C tower in the heart of the famous wine-growing village, this traditional townhouse boasts an elegant, contemporary-style dining room that has retained a handful of period touches (beams, ceiling and mouldings). Simplicity, authenticity and bags of character are the hallmarks of dishes elevated by high-quality ingredients, such as cep and onion ravioli served with kale, or chuck of veal with cauliflower. Delicious, well-balanced flavours and judicious use of condiments: pared-back cuisine that makes for a delicious culinary interlude.

Mandela Centre

Since its opening in 1986, the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund has played an important role in projecting a positive image of African and Creole culture in Mauritius, promoting the richness and variety of African and Creole Arts and Culture by various forms of cultural and social activities through exhibitions, publications, meetings, talks, and the performing arts.

In any society, arts and culture have to play a vital role towards the understanding and the maintaining of peace and harmony for a better life. The Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund focuses its aims at national and international levels. In a pluralistic society like ours, the understanding and appreciation of one another’s culture is very important and without which peace and harmony may never be achieved.

From the African Cultural Centre to the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund

The African Cultural Centre was inaugurated on the 27th October 1986. It was in September 1998 that the African Cultural Centre was renamed Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture when H.E. the President Nelson Mandela laid the foundation stone of the new building of the Centre at La Tour Koenig.

Brief History

From the 10 th to the 12 th September 1998, the Republic of Mauritius had the signal honor of welcoming His Excellency, Nelson Mandela.

Soon after his liberation, Nelson Mandela presided over the destiny of his country with uncommon magnanimity towards his adversaries in arms of yesterday.

He bestowed an abundance of forgiveness, offering reconciliation and love instead of retribution and revenge thereby proclaiming to the rest of the world his deep-seated faith in the force of love and non-violence as a great leveller of human foibles and follies.

The visit of Nelson Mandela was a privileged moment in the life of our Nation and an occasion for a rare outpouring of affection for this great man imbued with courage, conviction, integrity, humility and humanity.

Various activities were organised in the context of his official visit. His Excellency, symbolically planted a tree at the SSR Botanical Garden, signed bilateral agreements between our two countries and was made Grand Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, the highest honor of the Republic of Mauritius.

centre la tour

He also received the Degree of Civil Law Honoris Causa of the University of Mauritius.

In the context of the annual Summit of South African Developing Countries (SADC), the African anti-apartheid struggle hero, Nelson Mandela, stated that Mauritius  “is an inspiration for all South Africans”   “In a world where new forms of discrimination and prejudice emerge by generating violence and insecurity in many parts of the world, this proud celebration of unity in diversity gives hope,”  pointed out Nelson Mandela.

One of the most important moment of his visit, was the laying of the foundation stone of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund formerly known as the African Cultural Centre Trust Fund. On that occasion he wrote in the Centre’s Visitors book: ‘Strength and hope emerged from every part of the body when I laid the foundation stone of this building’.

A Centre which is a pledge of the entire Mauritian Government and population to make accessible the pristine beauty and glory of African Culture.

The immediate task of the Centre is to reconnect our people with their African past by giving them their memory which is also our dignity and inspiration.

The Centre promotes the great values that inspired Nelson Mandela, that is, a passion for justice, an unyielding courage to fight for it, resistance to the forces of oppression and never forget that beyond ethnic, cultural and other artificial barriers that set men against men, our ultimate goal is the brotherhood of men.

On 5 th December 2013, former President Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) passed away at the age of 95. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, will be remembered for the stellar role he played in the dismantling of the abhorrent policy of apartheid in South Africa and also in the struggle for freedom of many countries in the world.

‘The best tribute that the world can pay to him is to ensure that we perpetuate the legacy of this exceptional human being.  His leadership and moral rectitude should guide all of us in transforming the world into a place where every single human being gets the opportunity to live up to his potential’.

In line with the objectives of Nelson Mandela Centre and the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent, the Nelson Mandela Memorial Week is celebrated annually since December 2014. The Memorial Week is not a glorification of Mandela but contributes to the making of a just society by keeping alive the legacy of Nelson Mandela. All activities are organized to promote Mandela’s lifelong vision of freedom and equality for all.

Nelson Mandela has dedicated his life to the struggle for peace, justice, tolerance and democracy. We all need to continue their work.

“We will not forget you, we will not dishonor you, we will remember and be glad that you lived among us, that you taught us, and that you loved us all.”

Maya Angelou

Legislation

In 1989, the African Cultural Centre Trust Fund was formerly established by an enactment of the Parliament of Mauritius-Act No.41 of 1989.  In June 2000, the African Cultural Centre Trust Fund Act was amended by the National Assembly and became the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture Trust Fund Act-Act No.5 of 2000.

Text description provided by the architects. London-based, architecture and interiors practice Arney Fender Katsalidis has completed a 160,000sqft office space in Quebec, Canada for internationally renowned professional services firm Deloitte. Located in Montreal between Windsor Station and the Bell Centre, La tour Deloitte was named for its anchor tenant. Deloitte occupies seven floors of the 24-floor, 514,000sqft building.

Deloitte requiredregional headquarters that would be used as a business tool to realise its aim of becoming the employer of choice across its myriad of business units. Deloitte needed a space that fostered creativity, innovation and productivity, but that also provided tailored spaces for all types of work and all types of workers in their multidisciplinary firm.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 26 of 32

Earle Arney, Chief Executive of Arney Fender Katsalidis, notes, “The charge from Deloitte was clear. Choose a building with great bones and transform the base into a highly connected workplace. What resulted was a two year journey, selecting and modifying a typical rise in downtown Montreal and giving life to the space by bold and thoughtful adaptions to Deloitte’s seven floors.”

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Table, Sofa, Shelving, Chair

Deloitte’s office now offers more than 18 types of workspaces – a stark contrast to the standard three-workspace model of office, workstation and meeting room which they had persisted with for decades. Arney Fender Katsalidis’ design strategy focused on the creation of an agile workplace, which is a clear step away from the offices of traditional professional service firms and an innovative feature for the Canadian market. It allows Deloitte’s Montreal office to be an instrument of business, attracting talent, competing with contemporaries as well as enabling effective collaboration and relationship-building for staff and clients alike.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 27 of 32

There are personal workstations, private rooms with closed doors, treadmill desks, sit-stand workstations, ‘work with a view’ stations and a dedicated quiet zone. Collaborative work environments include open/semi-open ad hoc meeting booths and tables and shared space hubs at key intersection points across the office. Across both individual and shared work areas, state-of-the-art technology, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, wall-mounted meeting room reservation tablets and smartboards facilitate productivity.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 22 of 32

Arney Fender Katsalidis has also provided communal and social spaces, including a number of lounges, cafes, bistros, and outdoor green space, a wellness centre that includes fitness facilities with changing rooms and reflection space, enhancing the firm’s robust corporate offering.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 17 of 32

Aesthetically, the design employs a fractal geometry to reflect the plurality of working styles and multi-dimensional character of the firm. This geometry is evident in folded planes of glass, wood, stone and metal. Additionally, tailored finishes are juxtaposed against raw finishes that further ensure that the complexity and range of the firm’s service offerings have informed the style of the workplace.Accordingly, we see finely crafted stainless steel, copper, silk and leather against distressed timber, raw steel, tin ceiling panels and chalkboard panels.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Table, Stairs, Windows

Five of the floors are united by a full-height glazed atrium. A feature staircase in vibrant Deloitte-green encourages spontaneous conversations and connections as staff move between floors and adds a sculptural element to the space that is dramatic and brand-themed. All floors have a common core that is linked by the staircase, including a café, external-facing breakout spaces, a specific floor colour code and a furniture theme. Importantly, the modular Knoll furniture systems used can be adjusted to individual needs and include L-shaped, bench and boomerang (120-degree) desk setups.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Windows, Handrail

Matthew Kobylar, Director of Interiors and Workplace Strategy at Arney Fender Katsalidis explains, “Deloitte’s business units are varied in how they work and the space has to adapt to each business unit’s typical work style. Creating a blueprint that is flexible and adaptable was paramount to the strategy and design for this project.”

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 4 of 32

La tour Deloitte also features energy-efficient lighting and cooling systems that help reduce overhead costs and emissions. Bike storage encourages staff to ride to work instead of drive, and employees have the power to control the temperature of their workstations by turning vents on or off based on their preferences.

Deloitte Quebec HQ / Arney Fender Katsalidis - Image 18 of 32

In addition to strategy and interior design work, Arney Fender Katsalidis contributed to several alterations of the base building design. Collaboration with the construction team and developer ensured that Deloitte benefited from maximum use of the building space and that architectural elements worked seamlessly with the innovative interior design. It was a joined up approach to architecture and interiors that ultimately has created a sophisticated and linked landscape for this workplace of the future.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

Aug. 1, 2023

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

TCM Classic Films Tour

Where: The Warner Bros. Studio, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank 91505

When: Most days, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $95 for adults; $82 for children. A SoCal resident discount is available for $75

Info: (818) 977-8687 or wbstudiotour.com

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”
