Everything You Need To Know about Costco Travel Packages

When booking travel online, big names like Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz come to mind. There’s another player in the field that many don’t automatically think of. Costco Wholesale Corporation, or Costco, is synonymous with offering wholesale pricing directly to consumers in their warehouse stores. They also sell travel and Costco travel packages.

The Costco Travel division has been around since 2000, and Costco members should take advantage of the deals. Here’s what you should know about Costco travel packages. 

What To Know about Costco Travel

Costco Travel offers discounts on rental cars, cruises, guided group trips, and vacation packages . One of the most important things to know is that it’s only available to Costco members. There are two Personal Memberships, Gold Star or Executive. An Executive membership offers a 2% reward of up to $1000 per year on travel spend. There are also two Business memberships, Business and Business Executive. 

According to Costco Travel, Costco’s warehouses are known for purchasing items at a lower cost and re-selling them in their stores. Costco Travel’s buyers are no different. They negotiate lower prices on all their travel offerings and then share the discount with members. They can also offer complimentary resort credits, upgrades, and transfers at some of their resort partners.

Types of Costco Travel Packages

Costco travel packages feature hotel or other lodging accommodations, airport transfers, car rentals, and activities in 23 countries. Costco’s Vacation Package website sorts its hundreds of offerings into categories by interests, including all-inclusive resorts and cruises, romance and honeymoon options, and family-friendly fun. Some travel packages include airfare, but airfare can be an add-on to most packages. Currently, the packages are only available to residents of the United States. 

In addition to the bundled vacation package above, Costco Travel has three other types of packages. One option is guided trips, such as African safaris, which take place with outside providers. Another is cruise packages, which are offered on 12 different cruise lines. Theme park lovers can also purchase packages that include discounted stays with admission tickets to Disney or Universal properties. 

As with its well-known Kirkland brand products sold in stores, Costco Travel offers its private label Kirkland Signature Vacations, which feature a variety of extras and special discounts. The Signature Vacations are choices of cruises to the Adriatic, Alaska, The Mexican Riviera, Bahamas, and other European locations. Buyer’s Choice trips are one tier below and offer a digital Costco Shop Card. Lastly, Limited-Time Deals are trips members must book by a specific date to optimize their savings. 

Are Costco Travel Packages Worth It?

You may wonder if Costco travel packages are worth it in terms of money saving and other factors. As with any travel, research is essential to find the best deals. Costco members would still want to look at other discount sites, including Travelzoo, Groupon, and Priceline. These are some advantages to booking with Costco Travel.

• Time savings, as they have done the bundling for you
• Refund price differences if the price drops between booking and departure
• Communicating travel alerts and visitor information during the booking process
• Travel insurance benefits are provided 
• Help while traveling by providing a contact number for any issues on the trip
• A 5 to 8% rebate on lodging costs in the form of a digital Costco Shop card
• 3% cash back on travel spend for Costco Anywhere Visa cardholders

Erin Towner, a Costco member from Texas, has used Costco Travel three times and purchased a package for her honeymoon travel . “There were many packages to the French Polynesian Islands, but we ultimately decided that we didn’t want to island hop, so our package was only for Bora Bora,” she said. 

Her package included roundtrip flights from Los Angeles, boat transfers, five nights in an overwater villa, a daily breakfast buffet, and a nightly three-course dinner for $9100 for two people. She compared the pricing of Costco’s package overall to the individual items via the companies with her loyalty accounts. “Booking only the hotel through my loyalty account was more than the entire package via Costco,” she said.

Considerations Before Booking

There are some considerations to keep in mind before booking with Costco Travel.

Janice Moskoff, a Costco member, travel writer, and blogger of Gather and Go Travel , shares some potential downsides when considering Costco travel packages. “Costco works with a select group of large hotel and resort groups in a set number of destinations,” she says. “This practice means you will have fewer places to choose from.”  

Moskoff shared that there are also limitations with flight bookings through Costco because you cannot use frequent flier miles for discounts and seat upgrades, and flight changes must be made directly through Costco. “Since the savings on bundling airfare into a travel package are typically small, you may want to skip the flight bundle and stick to buying plane tickets separately,” she says. 

How to Book Costco Travel Packages

Costco offers several ways to book travel options, including travel packages. If your destination or package has been chosen, booking online is the quickest. You can also shop and purchase travel from Costco’s mobile app. If you need recommendations or custom options, or have questions, utilizing the Costco Travel Center is your best bet. Costco Travel’s employees are trained travel professionals who can advise members on vacation bookings. 

Towner shares her experience using the Costco Travel Center, as she called them with questions about personalizing her trip package. “I definitely recommend booking via Costco,” she says. “If there’s anything about the package you want to modify, don’t hesitate to call and speak with a representative to assist you in making the package exactly what you want!” 

While you cannot book travel in the warehouse stores, most stores feature a kiosk near the exit for Costco Travel. Here, you can pick up their seasonal 60-page travel catalog, which is color-coded by each destination or category. There’s a QR code next to each package listing to scan for more information and booking. It also lists a star rating for each package’s hotel and an explanation for each star level. 

Other Costco Travel Options

While Costco Travel primarily focuses on vacation packages, they also offer rental car and hotel bookings. Their rental car offerings through four providers provide some of the most competitive options. If your road trip takes you near a Costco, you’ll save on gas that way, too! 

“Costco generally offers the best car rental rates and terms, like a complimentary additional driver and free cancellations,” notes Moskoff. “For these reasons and the easy booking process, Costco is always my first top when searching for a rental car.”

If you’re a Costco member planning an upcoming trip, you’ll want to consider browsing the Costco Travel site before booking anything. A variety of Costco travel packages are offered to members, which are all-inclusive for resort stays and more. It’s also important to do your due diligence to find the best deal. There’s a destination and package awaiting anyone looking for a trip of a lifetime.

This was our first visit to Bora Bora and first time staying in an over the water bungalow. It was all we hoped it would be and more! It truly is a tropical paradise. The property is well maintained and all of the staff are friendly. Nice breakfast buffet offered and great food at all the other dining locations. The sushi at the wine bar was excellent. Also, there is a daily happy hour at the pool bar. The mini bar in the room is stocked daily with beer, ice tea, cokes, juice; plus some chips and candy bar. Insulated bottles provided to fill at water/ice stations. Coming back to the from the main island on the water taxi after an excursion, we met the lovely Mirabelle (guessing on the spelling). She kindly introduced herself and asked how we were enjoying the resort and the island. We saw her again at Otenamu for dinner on our last night. She immediately remembered our names and provided such great service throughout our meal. I am sorry that we didn't get other names to give a shout out. All of the staff was wonderful. For a few extra $, the day room was appreciated as we had a late flight out and we could enjoy the resort to it's fullest and then have a place to get ready for our flight home.

We loved staying at Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resort. It was a beautiful property and well maintained. It was very clean. It was designed with a Polynesian feel to it. We stayed in both an over water bungalow and a garden villa. The over water bungalow was phenomenal! The garden villa had a lot of privacy and its own small pool, which we liked. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. It was a very unique and special experience. Paradise on earth. Things to be aware of that they don’t tell you about when traveling here: 1. Both Tahiti and bora bora airports are non air conditioned so it’s very hot to sit in for hours until your next flight. 2. Meal options are limited. You only have one option for lunch at Miki Miki. Even burgers are about $30 usd. American dishes taste slightly different here. Mostly fish options are served. Dinner at the Otemanu buffet is $80 per person and $40 per child. Drinks are paid separately. A meal plan should be considered that they offer. If you ask for water at a meal they will bring you a bottle of water and charge for that about $5 usd. You can’t just get a glass of water with your meal. 3. Everything typically gets charged to the room, including photography packages. 4. You have to pay for the boat transportation to and from the resort. 5. Gift shop purchased can be charged to the room. 6. They do not have snacks offered at the gift shops, only what they provide with room service, which is a small bag of chips and soda, coffee, tea, juice, and beer in the mini fridge. 7. Pack repellant! I was bitten badly by mosquitoes and my body had a reaction to it. My husband and son didn’t get bitten once, but i did. 8. Expect rain, it comes and goes fast but it’s cloudy, humid, and windy and can get a lot of rain. We had more rain than sunshine during our stay.

Le Bora Bora Pearl resort is truly a paradise. We celebrated our 20th anniversary with the 3 kids (ages 11-16). This was where we honeymooned (but not the same resort). At first we were hesitant about bringing the kids as Bora Bora is known for couples and honeymooners. We were so glad to see that we weren’t the only family with kids. In fact, there were definitely many families with kids of all ages. With that said, the resort is still big enough, that it never felt crowded. The couples who wanted their peace and privacy would definitely have their spaces. The beach - absolutely stunning. Unlike other resorts, which I heard, the beach here is all natural. It is calm and shallow. Perfect to enjoy complimentary kayak/ paddle board, or just fun on the sand. The coral garden - so much fun. Fish of all colors. We also saw sharks in the morning! The restaurant - so delicious. We got our package through Costco Travel which included the breakfast and dinner. Everyday, we had wonderful fine dinning experience at the Otemanu Restaurant. We enjoyed every dish, not only were they tasty, but always beautifully displayed. Monday night, they have the Polynesian show and buffet - this is not to be missed. OWB - the room was absolutely amazing. The room was very clean, spacious and the coral under your bungalow is a wonderful entertainment at all time. Wifi was very strong - but not that we needed much electronic time while there. There were plenty of USB outlet around the room. But still bring an outlet converter/adapter. I brought my Dyson Airwrap - which didn’t work for some reason despite using the converter. We enjoyed laying out on the hammock outside our deck. Not only was this great during the day, but make sure to spend sometime out there at night to enjoy some amazing sky watching experience. We read some reviews about the theft situation at the resort, but we had no issue at all while there. The staff - all of them were super friendly. Everyone greet you with a smile and LaOrana. The restaurant staff, even though they were busy were often singing along - they must enjoyed their work. Dayroom - our flight was late at night, so we didn’t need to leave the resort until close to 6pm. We did get a dayroom for about $100. It has a shower and small couch. Looking back, we could have done it without one since we spend the whole day just out on the beach. As we were ending our trip, the staff all helped us with our luggage, send us off with beautiful shell necklaces. I also saw a gentleman - likely the manager was all hands on helping as well. This truly makes all of us feel like VIP at the resort. Even though the resort was rated as a 4-star. This is absolutely a 5-star resort by all standards. I would highly recommend anyone going to Bora Bora stay at this resort.

The most gorgeous resort I've ever been. We came here for the first stop in our honeymoon and never wanted to leave. Amazing, amazing grounds, top-notch rooms, incredible service, and wonderful staff. It was the experience of a lifetime! Pool and beach have the best view of the mountain, and food was excellent through and through. We loved all four restaurants they offer, and appreciated how it was all a little different! We went during the shoulder season (late March) and actually had great weather the entire time. Can't recommend this place enough...

Even though it was quite the journey getting there from the states, it was well worth it! Once we made it to Bora Bora the transfer from the airport to the boat was seamless. From the time we stepped on the boat at the airport to when we were greeted at the resort, we were treated like family! Angela(?) gave us an introduction in a nice air-conditioned room and started us with a local beverage and cold towel, it was already pretty humid that morning. We were fortunate to get our room right away, not something to expect as we were told the rooms would not be ready until 3:00-3:30pm, we arrived around 9:30am. Our room was spotless and looked better than the photos online if you can believe that! Very happy to say I did not see one bug or insect in our room during our entire 7 day stay. After we got settled we went to the Concierge and made dinner reservations for the whole week as initially suggested by Angela. We also booked the 1/2 day Sting Ray/ Shark snorkeling trip and spa appointments at that time which I recommend. The spa fills up. The Sting Ray/Shark trip was great! We met 3 other lovely couples, one from Spain, Tokyo and California and had a wonderful afternoon together. The guide (Renu?) was awesome!! He took us to snorkel with Sting Rays and Black Tip Sharks, tried to find a few places to spot Manta rays, sang to us with his ukulele then took us to his own beach property for some fresh pineapple and mango before taking us back to the resort. It was a fun day trip! The spa was located behind the resort in a very peaceful setting. A great way to unwind and relax. There were tennis courts, outdoor games back along that area too. Also a nice walking trail in a jungle (dinosaur skeletons) type setting, looked like they were still working on its development. The breakfast is included for all quests and it did not disappoint. There was such a wide variety of food, definitely something for everyone. There was a station for made to order eggs and omelets. They had bacon, sausage, hot vegetables which changed daily, scrambled eggs, hash browns, rice, waffles on a stick, crepes and French toast for the hot food. A pastry table was filled with a variety of local home made breads, muffins, danish and croissants along with a table of all kinds of bread for toast, bagels and French rolls were also available. There was fresh fruit, parfait, yogurt against the wall and a long refrigerated table with meats and cheeses, smoked and salted fresh fish and salad fixings. Also a wide variety of juices for you to choose from. We filled up at breakfast every morning and weren't hungry until dinner! We had the dinner package included with our room which was really nice since the menu is on the spendier side. We only had to pay for beverages. There are two restaurants to choose from for dinner that we alternated throughout the week. The Otemanu Restaurant was slightly more formal than the Miki Miki pool side restaurant but both had exceptionally great food. If you have the chance make sure you reserve the buffet for both. The Miki Miki included a BBQ by the pool. Both buffets had a huge variety of food choices that were all fresh and delicious! They had a beach fire dance show at 7:45pm on one of the days which you can watch from many areas of the resort. The Otemanu had a show in the restaurant at 7:30pm on the buffet night so plan accordingly. There is a more formal restaurant available if you wanted a more intimate dinner and also a wine bar, both do not open until 5pm which we didn't get a chance to experience. The were plenty of staff at the Miki Miki and the Otemanu restaurants to tend to your every need with a smile and "Maururu" (thank you). They were all so kind and helpful, Yahn was a Rockstar, seemed like we saw him everyday! He even bid us a farewell when we were checking out! The pool bar was nice, you never had to get out of the pool for a beverage! The pool and the beach were never crowded so you could always find a lounge chair which really made for a nice relaxing stay. The activity attendant, Jean was so friendly, he greeted us by name every time he saw us! The bungalow over the water was so perfect, they were situated with high bamboo type fencing for privacy and we had a direct, unobstructed view of the mountain. There is a mini fridge that is stocked daily with two beers, a Coke, Coke Zero, pineapple juice, cold tea, a bag of potato chips and a chocolate, coconut candy bar along with Nespresso pods. There were also tea bags, hot cocoa and sweeteners. The Nespresso and hot water kettle are a nice complement to the room. It was just enough where we didn't mind that there were no grocery stores at this resort. They give you a nice water bottle and tote bag which came in handy. There are water and ice stations near each batch of bungalows so you always have access to refill your bottle. Other reviewers commented on having to pay for bottled water at lunch and dinner so they brought their own water bottles with them to meals. I do have to say their O'Tahiti brand of bottled water for $6 tasted much better and well worth the price! Some additional tips we found helpful- *We packed two floatees and a small rope. Best tip from another reviewer. I didn't see any available at the activity stand so it was nice to have our own to use at our leisure to hang out in the water without worrying about drifting too far away from our room. They do have a life jacket in the closet but the floatees were the bomb! *We purchased alcohol at duty free in LAX. You are allowed 2 bottles per person and it was nice to have it available for cocktails in your room. The bar and restaurants are a bit of a walk from the bungalows. *We brought our own speakers to play music on our deck which made it nice while we relaxed in the lounge chairs and in the water. *Bring a US outlet adapter if you want to use a shaver or curling iron. They have plenty of USB outlets throughout the room. *Bring lots of sunscreen and reapply often. The sun while in the water can sneak up on you! They offer free sunscreen at the activity stand but not sure of the SPF. *We brought bug spray, saw it on a review but we never used or needed it. *They do offer laundry service but we didn't utilize it. *Bring some snacks if you want something other than chips and a chocolate bar. There is no place to buy snacks at this resort. *Evenings and restaurants are warm, do not need a sweater or jacket. *They have an umbrella in the room to use for the rain and/shield the sun. *Don't need to pack a ton of clothes, you spend a lot of time in your bathing suit and cover-ups. The staff is 5 star all the way! Every person we came in contact with had such a genuinely happy, welcoming demeanor always greeting us with a "la Orana" (hello). It was definitely the people that made our stay one of our best vacations. We are already planning our next trip back! Maururu Le Bora Bora and Staff!
