6 great cruises that will take you to the Maldives

Gene Sloan

Located in the Indian Ocean, about 600 miles south of India , the Maldives is known for stunning white-sand beaches, impossibly clear blue waters and dozens of over-the-top luxury resorts.

If you're thinking about a Maldives trip , you'll want to look closely at these resorts, some of which promise pampering and privacy of a sort found in few other destinations on Earth. Many of them, including the recently reviewed JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa and the W Maldives , feature overwater bungalows -- a signature feature of high-end properties here. They often are set on their very own private islands, only reachable by seaplane or boat. Exclusivity is the watch word.

But there is another, lesser-known way to visit to the Maldives that you might want to at least consider: A cruise.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The Maldives is definitely not a major destination for cruise ships. Only a handful of vessels visit the archipelago each year. But those that do often arrive as part of unusual, long-distance itineraries that will let you visit not just the Maldives but other destinations in the region such as the Seychelles and Sri Lanka in a single trip -- all while only having to pack and unpack once.

Cruise lines that sail to the Maldives

The lines operating cruises to the Maldives vary every year. Holland America, Oceania Cruises, Ponant and Costa Cruises are among the operators that send ships to the destination most often. Seabourn Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line also have sent vessels to the Maldives recently, or have at least one ship scheduled to visit in 2020 or 2021.

In some cases, the vessels are just passing through the region while in the midst of epic, around-the-world voyages. Holland America's 1,380-passenger Amsterdam, for instance, will visit the Maldives in April as part of a 128-day, globe-circling sailing out of Fort Lauderdale , Florida, that began in January. The voyage also includes ports in South America , Australia and Africa .

Other vessels stopping in the Maldives are on Indian Ocean-focused itineraries. One example is a seven-night Costa Cruises voyage beginning in Male, the capital of the Maldives, on Feb. 22 that includes two days in the Maldives, a day in Sri Lanka, and three days in India.

The line that traditionally has offered the most in-depth voyages around the Maldives is Ponant, a France-based company that specializes in upscale, small-ship voyages to exotic locales. It sometimes runs trips that are almost completely centered on the Maldives and include visits to half a dozen of the archipelago's 26 atolls.

The pros and cons of a cruise to the Maldives

If it's a classic Maldives experience you crave -- days spent relaxing on pristine beaches, swimming, snorkeling, diving and splurging on spa treatments -- a cruise is generally not the best choice. You'll want to fly to the Maldives and spend extended time at one or more of its many island resorts instead.

In most cases, cruises that touch the Maldives only include a brief stay at the island nation -- and we mean brief! Many ships that stop in the Maldives as part of broader Indian Ocean sailings only do so for a single day. Others will stay for two days, which isn't much better if your goal is to get a true sense of the archipelago's spectacular beaches, coral reefs, diving spots and other allures. Much more rare are cruises that feature up to a week in the destination.

White-sand beaches, crystal-clear water and luxury resorts with overwater bungalows such as the Four Seasons Resort Maldives Laadaa Giraavaru, shown here, are top allures of the Maldives. (Photo courtesy of Four Seasons).

In general, cruises that include the Maldives are best for travelers who just want a quick sampler of the destination and other hot spots around the Indian Ocean such as the Seychelles and Goa, India , in one easy-to-book, easy-to-manage trip. On a cruise, you sometimes can visit three, four or even five places in the region in just a week or two, with someone else figuring out all the logistics.

The downside, of course, is that you'll get very little time in any one place.

For the coming year, the only major cruise line that has voyages with extended time in the Maldives on its schedule is Ponant. Featuring visits to half a dozen destinations around the archipelago, the line's Essential Maldives trips offer vacationers the chance to see more of the destination in a week than would be possible staying at a land resort.

Another more in-depth "cruise" around the Maldives is a multiday trip on one of several liveaboard diving boats that call the Maldives home.

Here, we take a closer look at the best cruises and cruise-like itineraries to the destination:

The "Essential Maldives" with Ponant

By far the most interesting Maldives itinerary currently on the market is the eight-night Essential Maldives routing offered by Ponant. Nearly every day of the itinerary brings a stop at a different Maldivian atoll -- six in all -- for snorkeling, scuba diving, beach-going, wildlife watching and other pursuits. The routing thus offers a broader exploration of the Maldives than you can get from staying at any one land resort or even several resorts.

The itinerary includes a day at Baa Atoll, one of the archipelago's wildest corners. Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa is known for its globally significant biodiversity including stony and soft corals, reef fish, marine turtles, manta rays and whale sharks.

There's also a day scheduled for Rasdhoo Atoll, a hot spot for scuba diving and snorkeling where passengers can see hammerhead sharks as well as rays and turtles. The four other atolls on the itinerary are Noonu, Ari, Mulaku and Male.

France-based cruise line Ponant offers voyages around the Maldives on an intimate, 184-passenger vessel. (Photo courtesy of Ponant).

Ponant typically operates just a couple departures of the itinerary each year on one of its small, yacht-like Explorer Class ships. Holding just 184 passengers, the vessels are designed for off-the-beaten-path "expedition" cruising. They have Zodiac boats on board for landings and an aft marina for water sports. They famously have an underwater lounge called the Blue Eye.

Ponant currently has just two departures of this Maldivian itinerary open for booking, starting on Jan. 25, 2021, and Feb. 2, 2021, respectively. The voyages are one-way between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Male in the Maldives. Fares start at $4,410 per person, not including $900 in port taxes. For more information, call 888-400-1082 or visit us.ponant.com .

A short visit to the Maldives with Oceania Cruises

Ships operated by upscale line Oceania Cruises typically stop in the Maldives two or three times a a year as they move between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Usually, these Oceania vessels only will stay in the Maldives for two days — typically in the capital, Male — as they make their way across the Indian Ocean. As a result, passengers on the sailings only get a tiny taste of the destination.

On the flipside, these cruises offer a chance to see not just a slice of the Maldives but also multiple places around the Indian Ocean in one relatively quick and easy trip.

Oceania's 684-passenger Nautica, for instance, will visit Male for two days in February 2021 as part of a 30-day voyage from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore. In addition to four stops in South Africa and a visit to Mozambique, the sailing will include calls at such Indian Ocean draws as Reunion Island, Mauritius and the Seychelles (for two days). Stops in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia round out the voyage.

Fares for the Nautica trip start at $8,299 per person, including government fees and taxes. For more information, call 855-335-2609 or visit oceaniacruises.com .

A quick trip to the Maldives with Holland America

One of the more unusual Indian Ocean voyages on the schedule for the coming year is a 20-day Holland America sailing out of Singapore.

The round-trip itinerary pairs four stops in Malaysia and a single day in Phuket, Thailand, with a multiday visit to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

As is the case with the Oceania sailing mentioned above, the Holland America voyage only includes two days in the Maldives. But there's a twist to the visit: In addition to a day stop in the capital of Male, the stopover includes a day in Utheemu, also known as Haa Alif Atoll. The latter is rarely visited by cruise ships.

The voyage will take place on Holland America's 1,258-passenger Maasdam. It kicks off Jan. 24, 2021.

Fares start at $2,999 per person, not including up to $210 in taxes and fees. For more information, call 855-932-1711 or visit hollandamerica.com .

A diving cruise on a floating Four Seasons

If you're a diving enthusiast, one of the top ways to cruise around the Maldives is a trip on the private Maldives diving yacht operated by Four Seasons . (Yes, that Four Seasons.)

Dubbed Four Seasons Explorer, the 11-cabin catamaran sails three- and four-night trips between two Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives: The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa and the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. Customers also can string together the two itineraries to create a seven-night loop.

Featuring stops in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the trips are aimed specifically at divers, with opportunities for three dives per day, plus occasional night and sunrise dives.

The 22-passenger Four Seasons Explorer operates diving cruises around the Maldives.

Four Season Explorer is billed as the fastest and most luxurious dive vessel in the Maldives. Capable of carrying up to 22 passengers, it has its own PADI Five Star diving center, comfortable cabins with en suite bathrooms, a main dining room and plush open-plan lounges. In addition to diving during sailings, passengers can sign up for spa treatments on uninhabited isles and take part in island barbecues, stargazing, sunset fishing and water sports.

Four Seasons Explorer cruises can be combined with a stay at one of the Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives to create an extended Maldivian vacation. Note that the spa at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru just made our list of the seven best spas in the Maldives .

Fares start at $2,550 per person for a three-night cruise, not including a 12% goods and services tax and 10% service charge. For more information, call 800-819-5053 or visit fourseasons.com .

A cruise from the US to the Maldives

Yes, you can get all the way to the Maldives and back from the United States by ship. There are just two big caveats: First, you need to block out more than 100 days for the trip. Second, the opportunity doesn't come up very often -- usually just once every year or two.

The opportunity arises when a cruise line unveils an around-the-world voyage beginning and ending in the U.S. that includes a visit to the Maldives.

As of the publishing of this story, there are just two such voyages open for bookings:

  • Oceania Cruises plans a 196-day around-the-world sailing from Miami departing on Dec. 21, 2021 that includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 684-passenger Insignia, ends July 5, 2022 in New York. Fares start at $42,199 per person.
  • Crystal Cruises has scheduled a 116-day around-the-world voyage from Miami departing on Jan. 17, 2022 that also includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 980-passenger Crystal Serenity, ends in Miami on May 13, 2022. Fares start at $37,097 per person.

Smaller segments of both trips also are available for booking.

The 980-passenger Crystal Serenity will visit the Maldives in 2022 as part of an around-the-world voyage from Miami. (Photo courtesy of Crystal Cruises)

Nobody goes on these around-the-world voyages just to see the Maldives, of course. The typical around-the-world cruise includes stops at dozens of countries on multiple continents. But, if you're looking to add the Maldives to your country count while visiting an array of other nations, too, all while never boarding a long-haul flight, these two sailings are the cruises for you.

Local Cuisine

You'll be able to find food from anywhere around the globe here — but focus on the local fare for the most authentic experience with Dubai cruises. While you're out on the town, pick up a shawarma , shaved strips of spicy spit-roasted meat served in pita bread. Try manousheh , a flatbread topped with local Akkawi cheese and za'atar herbs. Slate your sweet tooth with luqaimat , fried dough balls spiced with saffron and cardamom.

You must ensure you have a valid passport to travel on.

If your passport describes you as a British Citizen, you do not need a visa to enter the Maldives. For non-British citizens, you should check the current entry requirements on the website of the Maldives Foreign Ministry.

Visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures.

UK health authorities have classified Maldives as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. For more information and advice visit the  National Travel Health Network and Centre website . UAE Travel Advice —

Please note that the advice can change and consumers should continue to check it until they travel.

If you’re a British Citizen you can get a visitor’s visa on arrival in the UAE. In the past, this visa has allowed the visitor to stay in the UAE for up to 30 days. The visa has terminated automatically on departure and a new visa issued on arrival each time the same visitor returns to the UAE.

That approach continues to be applied in most cases, but in some cases, British citizens (and visitors of some other nationalities) who have left the UAE and returned again within the 30 day period of stay granted at the time of the first arrival, haven’t received a new visa. Instead, their stay has been limited to the initial 30 day period.

If you have any questions on the validity or expiry of your visa, contact UAE Immigration directly in Dubai on 04-3980000 or in Abu Dhabi on 02-4024500. If you’re residing outside the UAE, contact the  nearest UAE Embassy  for advice.

UAE laws and customs are very different to those in the UK. Be aware of your actions to ensure that they don’t offend, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas. There may be serious penalties for doing something that might not be illegal in the UK. You are strongly advised to familiarise yourself with, and respect local laws and customs.

Visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures.   Certain prescribed and over the counter medicines that are available in the UK but not in the UAE may not be able to be brought into the country without prior permission from the UAE Ministry of Health. Following changes in October 2018, it is now a requirement for everyone entering the UAE to complete an  electronic form  to obtain approval to carry medication for personal use. For more information on controlled medicines please see the  UAE Ministry of Health Website  or   Gov.UK .

Cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in patients from the United Arab Emirates have been reported to the World Health Organization. There have also been cases of Legionnaires’ disease among British nationals who have recently travelled from Dubai. For the latest information and advice, see the website of the  National Travel Health Network and Centre ( NaTHNaC ).

Please note that passport, visa and health requirements can change. It is every traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport, any required visas, and all the necessary vaccinations/health requirements as well as adequate insurance.

Dubai United Arab Emirates Cruise Port Guide

The lure of Dubai is irresistible, from its glittering mega-skyscrapers to its traditional Islamic roots. This enigmatic destination is recognized worldwide as a city pointed full throttle toward the future. Dubai is a must-experience city while on an India cruise . Dubai’s most iconic sights include the 160-story Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, and the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, a luxury resort which happens to be shaped like a boat’s sail.

Dubai is unlike any other place in the world, filled with luxe shopping and high-end boutiques, unique souqs (markets) scattered all over the city, and cultural institutions like the Dubai Museum. While you’re stopped on a Dubai cruise, you’re meant to live it up on unforgettable excursions like a helicopter tour of the city or a camel ride at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Not even differences in climate can stop Dubai from bringing you every experience you crave. There’s even an indoor skiing experience and the massive Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to dubai, dubai museum.

Take an afternoon to explore history at the Dubai Museum, located within the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest building in Dubai. Each gallery and exhibit showcases a recreation of life and society in Dubai from hundreds of years ago. It’s a must-do for history buffs, or for those who want to learn more about Dubai’s history as a global power.

Jumeirah Mosque

If you’re looking to visit a traditional Islamic mosque, head to Jumeirah Mosque, which is open to non-Muslims as well as Muslims. This landmark mosque stands out with clean white stone. Take a 75-minute guided tour of the mosque to learn about life and traditions of the mosque.

Palm Islands

When you cruise Dubai, take a day to explore the three man-made Palm Islands, called Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island, and Palm Jebel Ali, where families and solo travelers alike can enjoy the beach resorts, swim, snorkel, and dive. Waterparks and slides make it easy to cool off on a hot day, and you can even swim with dolphins on the islands.

Dubai Fountain

Don’t miss this classic local landmark, the ornate Dubai Fountain. Catch a choreographed performance of lights and music in the center of downtown. It’s also the largest fountain system in the world.

Learn More About Dubai Shore Excursions

Top things to do in dubai, shop at the dubai mall.

Over 1,000 shops call Dubai Mall home, so you could easily spend days here and still not see it all. From jewelry to luxe clothing items and a large food court for when you get hungry, the Dubai Mall lives up to its status as the 2nd largest mall in the world. Plus, you’ll find the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo and the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink located within the mall, which makes this a perfect afternoon excursion for families and those who want to stay indoors on a sweltering Dubai day.

Head to the Top of the Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa clocks in as the tallest skyscraper in the world, and in person it’s an immense sight. Purchase tickets for the incredible observation decks on the 124th or 148th floors, where you can take in a panoramic skyline of Dubai.

Adventure on a Desert Safari

Thrill seekers must head out on a desert safari while in Dubai. Ride through the red dunes on a car or bike or go camel riding in the desert. Or try sandboarding on the vast sands. Spend the night at a Bedouin camp and enjoy the desert and the traditional Bedouin setting in style on a shore excursion.

Scuba and Swim at Jumeirah Beach

Wreck diving is popular in Dubai, where remnants of shipwrecks litter the ocean floor. Divers will love Dubai’s adventurous seascape even though it doesn’t have active coral reefs. Cool off on a hot day with a dive or a swim on the Persian Gulf at Jumeirah Beach.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Dubai Cruise Port

Afternoon tea is a huge part of the culture in Dubai. Stop in for high tea at the Skyview Bar at the top of Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, where you can sip tea and enjoy fresh pastries while you watch the sun set over the skyline. Other dishes readily available on menus here include shawarma and falafel-based dishes. Locals regularly eat fresh seafood catches as well as lamb and mutton. Hummus is also a staple in the area. When you cruise Dubai, try another Emirati delicacy, al harees, which is a mix of wheat and meat with a porridge-like texture.

Culture & History of the Dubai Cruise Port

On cruises to Dubai, you’ll quickly discover that the history of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is rich, varied, and experiencing its very own renaissance. Humans have been living in the area that is now Dubai for thousands of years, but Dubai didn’t gain its cultural and economic prominence until the 18th and 19th centuries, when the city became the first port opening the area to trade. In the 1950s, oil was discovered and forever changed Dubai’s economy and its role in the global sphere. Since then, Dubai has steadily grown, becoming one of the most glamorous cities in history. Culturally, Dubai is greatly influenced by Islam, and during Ramadan, many restaurants and shops close to adhere to the holiday. Be sure to check to see if your Dubai cruise coincides with Ramadan during your time there.

Dubai Port Facilities & Location

Your Dubai cruise ship’s port of call is the Port of Rashid, which is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities like free wifi, currency exchange, a tourism information area, and plenty of souvenirs for you to bring back home when you return to the ship. You’ll see the Dubai skyline when you arrive at the Port of Rashid, and can depart the cruise port from a taxi or through a complimentary shuttle when you’re heading out on a shore excursion.

Transportation in Dubai

As the UAE’s most populated city, Dubai has no shortage of people buzzing around, trying to get from point A to point B. Dubai has an extensive metro and bus system that you can access by getting a Nol Card. You can simply buy a day pass while you’re stopped on cruises to Dubai. The taxi network in Dubai is enormous, too. Taxis have a different colored roof than other cars to signal what is a taxi and what isn’t. They’re also metered to make sure you get a decent fare. You can hail a taxi from the cruise port, but be sure to talk with your driver if you’re interested in booking a multi-stop ride or tour with them.

Shopping Near the Dubai Cruise Port

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise, ranging from the high end to bargain markets for every type of shopper. The Dubai Mall is the second largest mall in the world, so it’s easy to lose track of time perusing over 1,200 shops featuring clothing, antiques, and fine jewelry. Of course, Dubai’s revitalized downtown contains a variety of souks and marketplaces where you can purchase gold, spices, jewelry, handmade goods, and more.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates and the official currency there is called the Dirham (Dhs). You can haggle and bargain in souqs, or outdoor markets, but prices in department stores and boutiques tend to be fixed. Tipping is 10-15% of your surcharge at restaurants and bars, and you can round up to the nearest Dirham note when you’re tipping your taxi driver.

This collection of exotic cruises includes the islands of the Maldives, a ribbon of coral atolls in the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives are the perfect destination to relax, snorkel, swim, dive and fish under the tropical sun. Enjoy informal BBQs on idyllic sand banks under the stars, watch stunning sunsets with a cocktail in hand and snorkel among colourful marine life.

The beautiful islands of the Seychelles are a stunning mix of perfect beaches, picture postcard villages and exciting flora and fauna.

Mauritius, a volcanic island situated in the Indian Ocean, is lush and beautiful, with lovely mountain ranges, fine beaches, stunning coral reefs and picturesque villages. Madagascar, the ‘perfumed island’ includes the picturesque Nosy Be and Diego Suarez.

The island of Sri Lanka is situated off the southern coast of India. Explore the capital city of Colombo which traces its roots back through Dutch and Portuguese occupations and visit Galle, home to an impressive 17th-century Dutch fort.

Chennai, formerly Madras, is India's fourth-largest city and the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. Worth visiting is the tree-line residential area of Mylapore, where you will find the 7th-century Kapaleeshwarar Hindu temple and its heavily decorated tower. Visitors to Chennai usually travel to the neighbouring town of Mahabalipuram to see its magnificent temples, statues and carvings.

The Keralan city of Cochin is well known for the 20-metre long Chinese fishing nets used at Fort Koch and for St Francis church which is the burial place of Vasco da Gama. Just outside Cochin and accessible by taxi or rickshaw is Mattancherry Palace, where the upper floor was once used for the coronation of Cochin's Rajas. The building's walls are decorated with murals illustrating scenes from Hindu mythology. Performances of the local Kathakali dance are regularly held in the town's cultural centre.

Colombo is the economic and cultural heart of Sri Lanka, and has been an important trading post for centuries. The port area was settled by Arabs in the 8th century since when many other civilizations have come and gone. The Pettah Market area has some interesting buildings, including the candy-striped Jami-ul Alfar Mosque and the Khan Clock Tower. Many Muslim traders specializing in gold and jewellery sell their wares here.

Goa is India's best-known beach resort with 100km of scenic, palm-fringed coastline. Anjuna Beach in Panjim, the capital of Goa, was a hippy destination in the 1960s, and has elegant colonial buildings and mansions. Old Goa was a Portuguese colonial territory for five centuries, and there are many 16th-century churches and older Hindu temples in the region. South Goa has waterfalls, paddy fields and fruit plantations.

Male is the principal port of the Maldives, a jumble of skyscrapers, old buildings and markets. Majeedhee Magu is the main road on the island, bordered with shops selling everything from perfume to electronics. The town is surrounded by sea walls and has an artificial beach and a wide variety of restaurants.17th-century Hukuru Mosque is worth a visit for its black coral walls, engraved beams and panels decorated with carved Arabic writings.

Mauritius (Mauritius)

The port for Mauritius is Port Louis, a multi-cultural city with Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Chinese and Creole districts. The city has many shopping opportunities which range from lively street markets to a large shopping area on the seafront with fashionable boutiques. The Natural History Museum exhibits the only-known skeleton of the extinct dodo, and Fort Adelaide offers splendid views of the city. The island has some of the best beaches in the Indian Ocean and a mountainous landscape.

The French overseas territory of Mayotte is an archipelago situated between Mozambique on the African continent and Madagascar, and is one of the Comoros island group. Its white sand beaches attract many French holidaymakers, making this an expensive destination. Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches in the south, and in the summer, humpback whales are often seen in the lagoon. The majority of Mayotte's shops and restaurants are in Mamoudzou, which is chiefly a business and commercial centre.

Mormugao is Goa's key port, with an old-world atmosphere and a blend of Portuguese and Indian architecture, used as the backdrop for several Bollywood films. It has golden beaches and the 6th-century Arch of the Viceroys which commemorates Vasco de Gama's arrival in Goa, and the huge St Catherine's Cathedral. Other sights include Mormugao Fort and nearby Varca beach, a stretch of palm-fringed shore with rows of wooden fishing boats and palm-thatched longhouses.

Mumbai (India)

This is the largest port in Western India, noted for its financial centre and Bollywood, the world's largest film production centre. Mumbai's most famous symbols are the Gateway to India, a grand arch, and the nearby Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. British influences can be seen in the stained glass and sculptures of Victoria Rail Terminus, a World Heritage Site. Mumbai is a pleasantly chaotic city packed full of bazaars, roadside stalls, traffic and some of India's best restaurants.

New Mangalore

New Mangalore port is situated in Panambur north of the Gurupura river. Besides the beautiful beach of Tanniru Bhavi, places to visit in Panambur include Nandaneshwara temple. There are many more temples in Mangalore itself, the most famous being Shir Sharavu Mahaganapathy, where devotees gather during religious festivals. Mangalore is considered a scenic city, shaded with coconut palms and crossed by hills and streams.

Nosy Be island is Madagascar's chief tourist destination, but remains unspoilt, the air rich with the scent of ylang ylang which grows wild here. There are good outdoor restaurants on the sands and the water is crystal clear. Inland are fields of sugarcane and rum distilleries, and visits may be available to the coastal Lokobe Nature Reserve, home to gigantic trees, many bird species, chameleons and lemurs.

Reunion (France Overseas Territories)

Reunion is a French island territory east of Madagascar and south of Mauritius. Its landscape is diverse, with primary forest, serrated peaks, volcanoes and lava fields. The capital of St Denis has a botanical garden, a museum of modern contemporary art with paintings by Picasso and Gauguin and the impressive Notre Dame church. There are two dramatic Pitons ' Le Fournaise and Neiges, which have forested slopes, and two of the island's calderas can be explored on foot.

Seychelles (Seychelles)

The Seychelles archipelago consists of 115 islands lying north-east of Madagascar. The Inner Islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue are the most visited, with the Seychelles capital and port, Victoria situated on Mahe. Mahe is covered with mountains and dense tropical vegetation, including coconut palms, banana plants, mango and breadfruit trees, and has many white sand beaches suitable for swimming and snorkelling. Port Victoria has a National History Museum and Botanical Gardens with an giant tortoise enclosure.

St Denis is the capital of Reunion Island, a French territory south of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The island's dramatic and lush scenery is topped with the peaks of two pitons, Le Fournaise and Neiges. Plants unique to the Seychelles thrive in the tropical forest, where the carnivorous Seychelles Pitcher Plant and the jelly fish tree can be found. In St Denis the museum of modern contemporary art holds paintings by Picasso and Gauguin, and the hillside church of Notre Dame has an unusual statue of St Expedit dressed as a Roman soldier.

Also known as Toliara, Madagascan Tulear is next to a spectacular string of huge sand dunes backed by savannah, and Tulear Reef which stretches north to Morombe. Close by are the idyllic Ifaty Beach and Isalo National Park. The park has deep canyons and sandstone rock pinnacles, with large populations of birds, reptiles and lemur. In Tulea there are brightly-painted pousse-pousse, or rickshaws, a shell market, restaurants, an excellent arboretum and broad avenues. The sacred banyan tree of Miary on the outskirts of Tulear is worth a visit ' a huge specimen with branches spread across many metres.

Visakhapatnam

Although mainly an industrial city, Visakhapatnam is a popular resort with good sandy beaches, and is situated on India's east coast among the hills of the Eastern Ghats. There is a Ropeway cable car giving long-distance views of the city, shore and hills, and a museum housed in a de-commissioned submarine. Other attractions include the richly-decorated 11th-century temple of Simhachalam on the Hill of the Lion Lord.

A huge thanks to blue water holidays for organising a great holiday. All round great experience, great itinerary but still flexible in as much as you can still do as you wish throughout the week; I was allowed to go off and explore the islands if I chose not to partake in the organised day trips ?? all the staff were great and couldnt do enough for you; and were pleasant throughout and always smiling - wouldnt hesitate to book with these guys again

Really helpful staff this end too; great communications and no delays in answering my many emails!

We have just returned from an amazing 2 weeks cruising on yasawa princess around the south ari atoll and the south male atoll, stopping off at sandbars and small islands for swimming and snorkelling (or diving if you wanted this). Although, for the price, we expected few frills actually we were pleasantly surprised: Captain Ahmed and his crew could not have done more to make our stay special and enjoyable; from the chef who cooked our eggs each morning, to the bar staff, the room boy, the dhoni crew who helped us on and off the boats (and sorted out the messy bits whilst night fishing) and especially Sophie the tour rep who paced up and down the beaches watching out for the snorkellers safety, making sure we drank enough water, and arranging quizzes, crab racing ( yes, we did return them to the beach we collected them from!) and other entertainment.

Although not guaranteed of course, we saw amazing (Im running out of superlatives!) coral gardens and all the fish on our list wed seen before and were favourites and some that were new to us (I found Nemo!). One evening night fishing we saw flying fish, a turtle, two manta rays, dolphins and a beautiful sunset; my husband caught 3 fish -some caught were eaten at the beach barbecue!

We also met some lovely, fun people, which meant we had a great time; about 30% were repeat bookings, some meeting up with friends made in previous years, which speaks volumes. Guests were mainly British, aged between 50 and 65 but for one of our weeks there were 2 swedish girls (what a great laugh they were) and an Australian couple.

Brillint holiday on Yasawa Princess...amazing varieties of fish and coral on the reefs around little islands and sandbanks, best we have seen and we have been to Barrier reef and Red Sea.

Nothing was too much trouble for the crew and captain..beach picnics and BBQ`s great fun..very good food...good selection and freshly cooked Action Fish and Chicken.

Not luxury but exactly right for a relaxing holiday swimming snorkelling or diving. Great company of like minded people there to enjoy everything.
