Producers ROYO and Curve are delighted to announce a brand-new Made at Curve production of the Olivier, Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical  KINKY BOOTS  The Musical, which will tour the UK and Ireland from 17 January 2025.

The Broadway and West End phenomenon,  Kinky Boots The Musical , is strutting out in a brand-new production starring Strictly Come Dancing’s  Johannes Radebe  and rising star  Dan Partridge !

This joy-filled sensation, based on a true story and hit movie, features Tony® and Grammy® winning music and lyrics by pop icon  Cyndi Lauper , a hilarious and life-affirming book by Tony Award winner  Harvey Fierstein  and is directed by  Nikolai Foster  ( Grease  and  An Officer and a Gentleman ).

Cyndi Lauper  said  “Kinky Boots is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career, and I’m so excited that audiences will get to see it again, in a new production. It’s like a happy pill – and we could all use some of that right now! I can’t think of a better time or place to relaunch this special show in its place of origin.”

Harvey Fierstein  added  “ An all new production is a thrilling event in the life of a well-loved show. And to have that rebirth occur in the place of its origin makes it all a billion times more exciting. I can’t wait to welcome KINKY BOOTS home.”

Curve’s Chief Executive  Chris Stafford  and Artistic Director  Nikolai Foster  added:

“We all know Johannes for his extraordinary artistry on the dance floor, but seeing him inhabit the astonishing world of Lola in Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper’s proud, punchy and passionate KINKY BOOTS has been an electrifying and profoundly moving experience.

“Johannes is joined by Curve regular, the magnificent Dan Partridge, as Charlie Price and a world class creative team, led by designer Robert Jones and choreographer Leah Hill.

“We are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to create a brand-new KINKY BOOTS at Curve, alongside our terrific co-producers at ROYO, returning the story to its native Midlands and manufacturing heartland of Leicester, where our theatre proudly stands today. This is a story of British industrial heritage, told through Fierstein’s fiercely intelligent words, and Lauper’s explosive songs, in a truly joyful musical about overcoming adversity, celebrating individuality, the power of a good pair of heels and community spirit.

“We can’t wait to share this explosion of joy with audiences next year.”

Born and talent-nurtured in Zamdela Sasolburg, Johannes Radebe started dancing at the tender age of 7, fascinated by the discipline and the glamour of Ballroom and Latin.

Over the next 13 years, Johannes competed in local competitions working himself up the Latin ranks, with top honours, eventually adding ballroom and different dance styles like African Contemporary and Jazz to provincial colours for Gauteng, being a finalist at national dance competitions and getting an invitation to compete internationally in St Petersburg, Russia.

At the age of 21, Johannes left the shores of South Africa to work on the internationally renowned Italian cruise liner ‘Costa’. Travelling the world and doing what he loved opened up a whole new perspective on what life could hold for him. Persistence and experience saw this young, vibrant South African given more responsibilities including choreographing, teaching new dancers, and then eventually being promoted to Dance Captain.

After an exhilarating two years of travelling the world and showcasing South African talent at its best, Johannes desired to return home. When the offer came to join the 2018 debut season of the international hit show Dancing With The Stars in South Africa, it was an opportunity he simply could not refuse. The debut season of Dancing With The Stars was a massive success and once again threw Johannes into the international spotlight.

Johannes toured the world in International dance show Burn The Floor before being head-hunted by Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and moved to London to dance on the flagship BBC show. From the first series, the audience loved him and on his second series he was lucky enough to be partnered with Catherine Tyldesley and also dance the first same-sex routine with fellow Strictly star Graziano Di Prima. His Red-Carpet Routine in heels sent the nation crazy. The following season, he danced with Caroline Quentin and reached week 7 in a shorter BAFTA nominated season. In 2021, he was partnered with John Waite and they took the nation to their hearts – reaching the final in this groundbreaking same sex partnership. Johannes and John won ‘Media Moment of the Year’ for their stunning series at the LGBT Awards, the ‘Game changer Award’ at The Attitude Award.  Johannes was awarded ‘The Inspirational Public Figure’ at the Ethnicity Awards.

Johannes’ 2022 season was with actress and comedienne Ellie Taylor, reaching week 10. It was a joyous partnership and another firm favourite with the Strictly fans. The most recent season saw him reach the Semi-Finals with Tennis player and presenter Annabel Croft.  Their partnership touched the Strictly audiences and their couples choice will go down in Strictly history.

His debut solo UK Tour Freedom and follow up show Freedom Unleashed sold out across the UK including a week in London’s West End at The Peacock Theatre.

Johannes was honoured to be invited to Buckingham Palace to give the keynote speech for The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, on its first garden party to award the Gold Award winners since the pandemic. He returned to the Palace after a personal invitation from King Charles III and The Queen Consort to The State Banquet for The President of South Africa – a true honour for a boy from Zamdela. in 2024, he was honoured to meet Queen Camilla again alongside Volunteers from The Royal Voluntary Service – where he taught them to dance and presented her majesty with a pair of tap shoes.

ITV’s Loose Women made him an honorary Loose Man for their mental health awareness Loose Men Episode alongside Vernon Kaye, Roman Kemp and Mike Tindal. He was made a Judge in the Hello Inspiration Awards and featured on their Digital Cover. He was also a cover feature on Attitude Magazine with John Waite in 2021. In 2024 he returned to Loose Women on the panel for their first Loose Men / Loose Women show.

Other TV appearances include Celebrity MasterChef , The Christmas Celeb Sewing Bee (Winner), The Graham Norton Show , Saturday Mash Up Live , The Hit List , Saturday Kitchen , Morning Live , Steph’s Packed Lunch , The One Show , Lorraine , This Morning , Drag Race , I Like The Way You Move and BBC Breakfast .

2022 also saw his film choreography debut with the feature Pretty Red Dress (Teng Teng Films, in collaboration with the BFI, BBC Film, and the Sundance Institute) which premiered at London Film Festival. In 2023, he also was asked to be a Co-Producer on the Olivier nominated – A Strange Loop at The Barbican.

His first book Jojo: Finally Home was published on 7 September 2023 and became an instant Sunday Times Best-Seller. Shoppers and commuters may well have spotted a pair of giant red boots outside Nottingham's Theatre Royal yesterday. It was the opening night of hit musical Kinky Boots - and Andy Smart went along...

KINKY BOOTS OUTSIDE THEATRE ROYAL

Who would have thought the story of an ailing Northampton shoe factory could become this joyous, heart-warming Broadway original hit musical?

I doubt many of the theatregoers on the Great White Way have even heard of Northampton, but they bought into it big time, showering Kinky Boots with a host of awards and helping it beat more likely contenders at the box office.

It has slapstick, quick fire gags and genuinely tender moments but also a meaningful theme of sexual tolerance and understanding which has obvious links with that other cross-dressing hit La Cage Aux Folles.

Kinky Boots at Birmingham Hippodrome. For Birmingham Mail 2019

And for me, the performance of Kayi Ushe as drag queen Lola is the best individual turn seen at the Theatre Royal since John Partridge did his La Cage tour de force a few years ago.

Lola, and her troupe of shapely female impersonators, come to the rescue of reluctant factory owner Charlie Price (Joel Harper-Jackson) as he faces the prospect of sacking his workers and shutting down the business.

Stumbling into the twilight world of drag, Charlie has the idea for a new line in footwear that no one else provides. Fetish footwear for men that he calls kinky boots.

The UK tour of Kinky Boots is coming to the Liverpool Empire from March 26 to April 6

Once shop floor loud mouth Don (Demitri Lampa) has had his homophobia literally knocked out of him, the workers rally to the cause as the show evolves into one of those winning against the odds, feel good fables, carried along by the witty, and at times emotional script and Lauper’s wonderfully eclectic catalogue of songs.

Every aspect of the production works together. The sets are convincing, the costumes are stunning, choreography is sharp and original, the acting and vocals exemplary.

Kinky Boots at Birmingham Hippodrome. For Birmingham Mail 2019

Created by the team behind Hairspray this unlikely tale, which began life as a Brit-flick of The Full Monty and Billy Elliott genre, is so full of laughter and fun, when we reached the spangly, kaleidoscopic finale that brought everyone to their feet, my sides were aching.

Kinky Boots runs at the Theatre Royal until Saturday, June  8. For tickets call 0115 989 5555 or visit trch.co.uk.

Martin Holtom

I always look forward to the Carlton Operatic production every year and it was with some anticipation that I entered the Theatre Royal for the matinee performance of Kinky Boots and after a very warm welcome by the production team took my seat with the receptive audience and from the first bars of the Price and Son theme I could see, and hear, that I was in for another treat.

The orchestra was led with a great deftness of touch by Chris Rees who also brought out the best in his talented cast in all vocal aspects, both solo and ensemble numbers alike, and achieved a superb balance between pit and stage throughout. Rachael had clearly been working in detail with her cast of Factory Workers and Angels throughout rehearsals to ensure that the story was placed front and centre of the whole production with great diction, pathos, humour and sheer joy towards the conclusion. Kristian's choreography was very well judged to the cast's strengths and the set was suitably industrial and flexible being superbly lit throughout by Tom Mowat.

Kinky Boots for me is first and foremost an ensemble driven production, with the success of the show very much dependent of the believability of the whole cast in depth and here Carlton had a wealth of riches on display. Mark Coffey-Bainbridge as Charlie Price delivered one of his best performances in any show I have seen him in. He brought out the vulnerability, drive and passion for his workforce and creation of the perfect boot to the fore without any over-the-top acting or solo work. Cathy Hyde was also in great form as Lauren with her wide-eyed unexpected crush on Charlie.

Steffi Moore tackled the challenging role of Lola/Simon sympathetically and demonstrated both the vulnerability and fight at the heart of the character. Cliff Hart as Don had another of the productions hardest roles to deliver. Don can easily be played as a clichéd misogynist and Cliff judged his performance to a tee, bringing out both the hard edges and also the open mindedness of the character making him essential to every scene he was a part of. Lizzie Fenner delivered the essential role of Nicola, the money driven partner of Charlie with great poise and again avoided Cliché to bring out the three dimensions of the character.

I must also congratulate Lola's Angels – Louis Barnes-Cupid, Connor Gough, Mannie Gregg, Mason Hart, David Page and Sam Turpin. The precision of the choreography they delivered on the incredibly large set items which I'm sure they could only have seen when they arrived on the lorries in show week, was something to behold and they never once let any of these dance challenges interfere with the sheer sass and snap of their delivery in incredibly Kinky Boots.

The ensemble brought great strength in depth to the production with energy, enthusiasm and a well-rounded understanding of their characters and so all played their part in driving the narrative forward. Congratulations to Laura, Claire, Bara, Hannah, Daniella, Wendy, Adam, Poppy, Rebekah, Elliott, Ella, Sarah, Kelly, Patrick, Celine, Eva, Laura, Helen, Ray, James E, James B, Harley, Jacob and Beth.

A great all-round production with sound, lighting, costume, orchestra and performers all coming together under expert direction to deliver a very enjoyable production. Many Congratulations to all at Carlton and I look forward to Kipps in 2024

"The whole production was wonderfully directed, the choreography was on point and the costumes were just stunning." - Nottingham Post

Review: Kinky Boots UK Tour

Updated: Jun 8, 2019

Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper turn the true story of a Northampton shoe factory into a roaring and hilarious musical extravaganza! Kinky Boots is a spectacular mix of sass and heart-warming comedy, with the added ingredient of leather and drag queens!

The story follows the life of Charlie Price (Joel Harper-Jackson) as he takes over the family’s failing shoe business, after the saddening death of his father. The show turns around when Charlie meets Lola (Kayi Ushe), a drag queen from Clapham, whose shoes can’t handle the high-kicking glamour of a show-girl. Price and Sons begins work on a range of women’s shoes for men – ready to display on the stage of Millan. With heart-breaking and love-making spliced between the business heavy storyline.

This touring rendition of the award winning show boasts an incredible cast and killer songs. With some of the best harmonies I’ve heard since my love for the theatre began, the voices in the choral songs could be likened to an extremely polished gospel choir [like honey to my ears!] . Joel Harper-Jackson, Paula Lane and Helen Ternent blew me away with some of their solo belters. You do have to forgive some of the longer songs in the production, as they seem to have an outro lasting for too long – but this should be expected from the well-loved 80’s pop star (it was the trend at the time).

It was plainly obvious the cast have been practicing this performance for laughs, and were looking to make the audience chuckle at every given phoneme. At the heart of this was Kayi Ushe, the expert timing and perfect mixture of voice and action meant the audience hung off his every microsecond. Kayi has us all hooked and twisted beautifully around his beckoning fingers, with such meticulously glamorous nails. He could control the audiences mood with just a flick of his eyes, or the tone of his voice. He is one to be watched, and a force to be reckoned with as it is clear from this performance he has a long and full career ahead of him!

The laughs did come at a cost – the few moments of sadness in the story seemed to be missed as the cast prepared for the next line of funny. This however didn’t detract from the story in any way, it just meant the emotional rollercoaster didn’t seem as high and low as it could have gone – the twists, turns and loop-the-loops were still as poignant and promising on board this metaphorical ride.

The staging was fantastic and true to life, the band played each song as if it were there final curtain call, the audience ended the performance up on their feet and cheering for more. The audience and cast were so responsive to one and other and it truly made for an electrifying piece of theatre.

It is hard to find a negative when a performance is so clearly adored by the cast and creatives – each member of the performance team gave it 100%. The male ensemble looked beautiful in their drag, and credit to the director and choreographer, who clearly used every last drop of their potential.

This piece of theatre is truly inspiring and sings strong the messages of the LGBT+ community, as well as showing the general public some of the things they have to put up with. The focus on homophobia in the workplace was sterling, the message was crystal clear, and I would recommend this show to anyone who needs to see that we are all equal.

In true Elemental Theatre Company style, the show began outside the hall of Nottingham Theatre Royal, and began in the foyer, with 12 foot replica boots on display for photo opportunities. Even the audience got involved as some members came to observe this outstanding production in drag and kinky boots of their own.

This show is on at the Theatre Royal Nottingham 27th of May to the 8th of June 2019. The tour continues through Sheffield, Cardiff, Norwich, many more, ending in Hull on the 23rd of November 2019. I highly recommend catching this show with this sterling cast. It is not one to be missed.

Kinky Boots UK & Ireland Tour 2025 – Johannes Radebe as Lola

Producers ROYO and Curve are delighted to announce a brand-new Made at Curve production of the Olivier, Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical KINKY BOOTS The Musical, which will tour the UK and Ireland from 17 January 2025.

KINKY BOOTS The Musical

KINKY BOOTS The Musical was a Broadway and West End phenomenon based on a true story and movie of the same name released in 2005. After inheriting his family’s failing shoe factory and with a relationship on the rocks, life is proving to be very challenging for Charlie Price. That is until he meets Lola, a drag queen whose sparkle and unsteady heels might just hold the answer to saving the struggling business.

Guaranteed to RAISE YOU UP and celebrate everybody’s individuality, don’t miss KINKY BOOTS on tour commencing January 2025!

Cyndi Lauper said “ Kinky Boots is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career, and I’m so excited that audiences will get to see it again, in a new production. It’s like a happy pill – and we could all use some of that right now! I can’t think of a better time or place to relaunch this special show in its place of origin. ”

Harvey Fierstein added “ An all new production is a thrilling event in the life of a well-loved show. And to have that rebirth occur in the place of its origin makes it all a billion times more exciting. I can’t wait to welcome KINKY BOOTS home. ”

Curve’s Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster added: “ We all know Johannes for his extraordinary artistry on the dance floor, but seeing him inhabit the astonishing world of Lola in Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper’s proud, punchy and passionate KINKY BOOTS has been an electrifying and profoundly moving experience.

“We can’t wait to share this explosion of joy with audiences next year. ”

Born in the township Zamdela Sasolburg, South Africa, Johannes Radebe started dancing when he was seven. At the age of 21, Johannes left South Africa to work on the internationally renowned Italian cruise liner Costa and in 2018, he was invited to join the debut season of the international hit show, Dancing With The Stars, in South Africa.

Johannes toured the world in the international dance show Burn The Floor before being headhunted by Strictly Come Dancing. He moved to the UK to dance on the flagship BBC show. In his second series, he was partnered with Catherine Tyldesley and danced the first same-sex routine with fellow Strictly star Graziano Di Prima. In 2020 he danced with actress Caroline Quentin and in 2021, he and his celebrity partner, John Waite, made history by being the first all-male partnership to compete on the show. The pair made it to the final and recently won the British LGBT Award for Media Moment of the Year. In 2022, he was partnered with comedian and actress Ellie Taylor, and made it to the semi-finals in the sixth series with partner Annabel Croft in 2023.

2022 saw his film choreography debut with the feature Pretty Red Dress (Teng Teng Films, in collaboration with the BFI, BBC Film, and the Sundance Institute) which premiered at London Film Festival. In 2023, he also was asked to be a Co-Producer on the Olivier nominated A Strange Loop at The Barbican.

His first book Jojo: Finally Home was published on 7 September 2023 and became a Sunday Times best-seller. It was recently announced that South African film company Arrested Industries run by Anthony Kimble, and Oscar nominated Helena Spring Films, have optioned Jojo: Finally Home for a film, with further details to come.

His debut solo UK tour Freedom and follow up show Freedom Unleashed sold out across the UK including a week in London’s West End at the Peacock Theatre. He is currently on tour with this third show: House of Jojo, which includes performances at the London Palladium.

Johannes was invited to Buckingham Palace to give the keynote speech for The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, to award the Gold Award winners for the first time since the pandemic. He returned to the Palace after a personal invitation from King Charles III and The Queen Consort to The State Banquet for The President of South Africa – a true honour for a boy from Zamdela. In 2024, he lead a dance workshop at Buckingham Palace for volunteers from The Royal Voluntary Service which was attended by Queen Camilla. Johannes presented her majesty with a pair of tap shoes.

Dan Partridge has an extensive list of theatre credits including Magaldi in Evita (Curve, Leicester), Danny Zuko in Grease (Dominion Theatre, West End, Curve & National Tour), Rum Tum Tugger in CATS (European Tour & South Korea Tour), Link Larkin in Hairspray (UK Tour) and Pepper in MAMMA MIA! (West End).

His TV and Film credits include: Randolph Scott in Archie, the story of Cary Grant’s life for ITV, Jamie Wells in Casualty (BBC) and Jez Gordon in Doctors (BBC).

Dan also won Best Actor at the ‘This Is England’ Film Festival in Rouen, France for his work on the short film ÉTÉ directed by Gregory Oke.

KINKY BOOTS is directed by Nikolai Foster with choreography by Leah Hill, set and costume design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Adam Fisher and casting by Harry Blumenau CDG CDA.

KINKY BOOTS is produced by ROYO and CURVE.
