Ten CSULB students recently experienced an immersive tour of Qingdao, a city in China’s Shandong province. The six-day trip in January 2024 was organized by the Qingdao Municipal Foreign Affairs Office and the Long Beach-Qingdao Sister City Association, which fosters exchanges between the two cities in economy and trade, port management, education, and cultural exchanges.
Heidi Zhang, Director of International Training Programs at CSULB’s College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPaCE) joined Rene Giron, recent graduate of CSULB’s International Studies program, along with current CSULB students Louise Ramos, Nnadia Sithideth, Alexandra Nicole Ugale Filarca, Khang Kenneth Huynh, Jordan McClain, Mia Linda Castillo, Collin Barsh, Weibo Zhang, Heather Ma, Chloe Kapui Kwan. The Port of Long Beach partially funded the trip, with each student receiving a $1,000 scholarship.

The itinerary included visits to significant landmarks and companies in Qingdao, where students participated in cultural activities, enjoyed local cuisine, and learned about the advanced technology of large-scale, automated terminals at the Qingdao Port. They also met with QUT engineering students to get firsthand experience with robotics, race cars, and a virtual reality lab.

Throughout the visit, the students’ activities were covered by national and international Chinese media outlets. The group is among the first U.S. students to visit China following President Xi Jinping’s invitation for 50,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years to increase cultural understanding and academic collaboration. The announcement was made during Jinping’s meeting with President Biden during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in San Francisco in November 2023.

News | 59th annual Congressional Cup returns to Long Beach this week
The prestigious Congressional Cup regatta — dubbed the “granddaddy” of modern match racing — will return to Long Beach’s coastline for five days of action this week.
This year’s 59th annual Congressional Cup, hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club, will continue a busy event season in the city — taking place a week after both the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Ficker Cup, the latter of which is a qualifier for this week’s regatta.
The Congressional Cup will run from Wednesday to Sunday, April 24-28 — and will kick off the championship level 2024 World Match Racing Tour, the longest-running professional series in sailing.
The Long Beach Yacht Club founded the Congressional Cup in 1965. It’s the longest-running event of it’s kind in North America, according to LBYC’s website, and helped set the standard for world-class match racing across the globe.
Top-ranked skippers from across the world come to Long Beach to compete for the prestigious Congressional Cup trophy and the crimson blazer, a coveted jacket often compared to the green jacket golfers receive for winning the Masters Tournament.
The demand to compete in the Congressional Cup is so high, in fact, that the LBYC has expanded the roster of teams competing in this year’s event.
“We are delighted to have been able to increase the number of teams for this year’s Congressional Cup,” 2024 Congressional Cup Chairman Tony Mansour said in a recent news release. “Sailing, and specifically match racing, has enjoyed tremendous growth post-COVID and we have a unique opportunity to expand our line-up for 2024.”
A total of 12 teams will compete in the Congressional Cup this year, including:
- Riptide Racing’s Chris Poole (USA), defending champion.
- Ian Williams (GBR), a five-time Congressional Cup winner, with Team Gladstone’s Long Beach.
- Johnie Berntsson (Swe), Berntsson Sailing Time, 2009 winner.
- Capvis Swiss Match Racing’s Eric Monnin (Sui).
- Borch Racing’s Jeppe Borch (Den).
- Knots Racing’s Nick Egnot-Johnson (Nzl).
- RBYS’ Rocco Attili (Ita).
- DH3 Racing’s Dave Hood (USA).
Gavin Brady (USA), with True Blue Racing, will also make his return to the Congressional Cup after a 12-year hiatus.
Brady, a four-time Congressional Cup champion, narrowly missed out on qualifying for last year’s event, according to LBYC’s news release.
“It will be a very special week for me being back at the Long Beach Yacht Club and racing in the Congressional Cup,” Brady said in the news release. “My match racing started in 1996 at the Ficker Cup and Congressional Cup — I won my first Congressional Cup before one of my crew was even born.”
Three additional competitors will also join the Congressional Cup roster. Those competitors will be the top-three finishers from the Ficker Cup , which ends on Sunday, April 21.
Registration and practice for the Congressional Cup will take place on Tuesday, April 23 — and matches will begin on Wednesday, April 24, and run through Sunday, April 29.
The competition will take place just off the Belmont Veteran’s Memorial Pier, 35 39th Place, where spectators will be able to watch the races for free.
The 59th annual Congressional Cup will also be livestreamed starting on Friday at thecongressionalcup.com .

Tim Cook began the week in Vietnam , then spent Wednesday in Indonesia , and rounded out the week with two last days in Singapore . While Apple does not release Cook's schedule, it appears that his tour has concluded, and he's posted a last few photos and videos from it.
Cook's last evening in Singapore consisted of his visiting the Apple Marina Bay Sands store. Musician Benjamin Kheng was performing a concert there.
Tonight's performance by artist @benjaminkheng and producer @evanturetime at Apple Marina Bay Sands was unforgettable! The energy was electric, and it was such an incredible moment for customers and the team at a beautiful spot in Singapore! pic.twitter.com/DntSnRhiUI — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 18, 2024
The following morning, Cook again breakfasted with users. In this case, it was food entrepreneurs Faz and Amiera.
It was great to experience Faz and Amiera's love of food and get a taste of their entrepreneurial spirit! They showed me how they use MacBook Air, iPad, and iPhone to bring their hot honey and sambal businesses to life. pic.twitter.com/aCwgWELDlX — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 19, 2024
Cook then visited the new Apple Developer Center in Singapore. He met with developers, students, and Apple Design Award winners.
From solving puzzles to training knights, Jakob, Tongyu, Chiny, and Yiwei shared demos of their games with me at the new Apple Developer Center in Singapore. I loved hearing about your journeys... as students, teachers, and Apple Design Award Winners! pic.twitter.com/x2T3PW04c7 — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 19, 2024
To round out his travelogue, Cook concluded with a message about Singapore being an amazing country. He ended his posts with a shot from what appears to be the Apple Marina Bay Sands store and the staff there.

U of I Students Earn Top Awards for Music Education
April 16, 2024.
MOSCOW, Idaho — A University of Idaho student has received the Professional Achievement Award from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and the U of I collegiate chapter of NAfME received the Chapter of Excellence Award for Service in April.
Alexis Gist of Veradale, Washington, is a senior at Lionel Hampton School of Music and 2023-24 president of the Idaho Collegiate NAfME chapters. She has been a tireless advocate for music education and works to connect performers and educators through opportunities to teach, perform and inspire musicians of all ages. Gist is an accomplished flautist and served as a section leader in the Vandal Marching Band. She will graduate in May.
The U of I collegiate chapter of NAfME is made up of more than 30 students from Lionel Hampton School of Music. Over a period of several weeks, they worked closely with Lapwai Middle/High School where they cleaned and inventoried school band instruments, made simple instrument repairs, labeled those that needed professional repair and organized the instruments. This service project contributed to the revival of the school’s band program which hadn't met since 2014.
“I am so very proud of our CNAfME Chapter leadership and members and their hard work in planning and executing service projects, educational opportunities, and social gatherings for our music education community,” said Lori Conlon Khan, advisor to the group and a clinical associate professor at Lionel Hampton School of Music. “These students are well on their way to becoming awesome music educators,” she said.

1250 BELLFLOWER BOULEVARD LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA 90840 562.985.4111
'Day at The Beach' inspires excitement among thousands of CSULB-bound students
Committing to a university is not unlike accepting a marriage proposal. It’s a big decision with long-term consequences; there are practical and financial considerations; and compatibility is key.
In that way, “ Day at The Beach ” — CSULB’s campuswide open house held Saturday for newly admitted students — could easily be viewed as one big courtship with a single goal: Assuring students that The Beach is "The One.”
For Andrew Wright, assistant vice president of Admissions and Enrollment Management and the day’s metaphorical matchmaker, it was a day for celebration. Standing in front of a bank of computers where students were encouraged to officially accept their offers to attend Cal State Long Beach, Wright watched as nearly 600 students stepped up to the admission computers and pressed the “Accept” button. Many were met with hugs from proud parents and family members.
“The resounding success of the event stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of all involved,” Wright said, adding that faculty, staff and students “united to fashion an unparalleled experience for newly admitted students.”
Even the forecasted rain held off until long after the day’s events had ended.
“We had 14,700 future students and families,” Wright said, up from 11,500 in 2023, which was the event’s inaugural year. "It's fantastic.”
Plenty to see and do
In addition to the tours, talks and exhibitions offered by the individual colleges and departments, 95 booths were set up in front of the University Student Union to showcase everything from campus clubs and organizations to niche services and support. Sorority members wearing matching T-shirts talked up their philanthropic work and strong social networks. A Student Affairs booth highlighted an array of hosted events throughout the year. All prospective students were given tote bags to collect all kinds of branded CSULB swag. And every student who formally accepted their admissions offers went home with a “CSULB-Bound” keychain.
One of them was Hazel Periera, 18, who wore a burgundy CSULB sweatshirt and smiled broadly as her mother, Barbara, took her picture in front of the “GO BEACH” letters.
"I just love how social it is,” Periera said of the campus. "It seems like everyone here is super happy."
Hailing from the Bay Area and looking to major in anthropology, Periera said her favorite part of the day was a student-success panel held by the College of Liberal Arts and featuring a number of May graduates.
“They talked about all the clubs that they've been a part of, all the research, all the internships,” Periera said. “Some of them are doing medical school. One just interviewed for the CIA. It was inspiring.”
The folks at CLA weren't the only ones showing off their plumage.
Two students from the College of Engineering carted out a large student-made rocket to display. An ambulance drew attention to CSULB’s EMT program . And several sizable shark jaws served as the centerpiece of the Shark Lab ’s booth outside the Hall of Science.
For others, campus tours and student presentations were the big draw.
‘Vibrant’ campus impresses
The School of Art had demonstrations of woodworking, graphic design, jewelry-making, fiber-dying and printmaking. The Department of Cinematic Arts (formerly known as the Department of Film & Electronic Arts) took newly admitted film students through its recently renovated digs — including a brand-new Foley sound stage. The Department of Africana Studies and the Black Resource Center helped host a midday Black Student Reception attended by an estimated 180 admitted Black students. All the while, yellow-shirted students zigzagged around campus giving tours and sharing personal stories and advice with throngs of listeners.
Isla Selig, an 18-year-old from Sacramento, will study Studio Art at CSULB this fall. Saturday was her second time on campus, but the first time she really got to see it in action.
“It was a totally different atmosphere today with all the people and booths,” Selig said. “Long Beach feels so vibrant, and the school definitely follows suit."
The School of Art’s display was particularly impressive.
“I loved all the arts and crafts in the hallways,” she said. “Seeing the students working in their element completely focused on their art was really special. And to see such a large space solely for art was unlike anything I’ve seen before.”
Equally important, Selig said, was getting a glimpse of other members of the incoming class of 2028. She said she loved the diversity of the crowd and “could feel myself fitting in well.”
Indeed, if at any point Selig had cold feet about moving so far from home, Day at The Beach more than allayed those fears.
“Today made me feel that I made the right choice,” she said. “I feel very secure in my decision.”
