Essential guide to Curaçao cruise port in Willemstad: where ships dock, the two cruise terminals, the main attractions in Willemstad, and shore excursions.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 28, 2023

Curaçao and its cruise port in Willemstad - the capital - is an island with a rare charm, stunning colonial architecture, impeccably clean and kept, and very comfortable to explore on your own as safety is something you don't need to be concerned with.

The local population is friendly (but not pushy) inviting the cruise passenger to discover the many natural wonders and rich cultural past of this Dutch Island .

Where do cruise ships dock in Curaçao

Willemstad is one of the main highlights of Curaçao. Within walking distance from where cruise ships dock, the city's unique colonial architecture has a number of attractions to explore on foot and on your own.

In town there are landmarks like the floating Queen Emma Bridge and the Fort Amsterdam ; religious sites like the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue or Saint Ana Catholic Church; and museums such as Kura Hulanda and the Maritime Museum . Like most Caribbean islands it is also a shopping paradise and with great places to savor local cuisine.

With so much to explore in the capital of Curaçao, the cruise visitor who doesn't venture beyond Willemstad will be missing a lot. The pristine beaches and coral reefs with spectacular water visibility are an invitation to enjoy a relaxed day sun basking or in more active pursuits - snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing or fishing - in beaches like the famous Blue Bay .

Other attractions out of Willemstad should also be considered - like the Aquarium or the Hato Caves . It is also easy to combine any of these attractions with some time in the sun as both Kontiki and Mambo Beaches are close to the cruise piers.

Taxi Stand - Mega Pier

As mentioned, Willemstad is within walking distance of both cruise terminals, but if the cruise passenger wishes to explore other attractions (besides the excursions offered onboard, with independent tour operators online or at the pier) there are taxis (around $40.00 per hour for up to 4 people) and car rentals .

The Public Buses are limited - and not as good as services in Aruba (another Dutch island close by) - but there are Electrical wheelchairs for rent next to the Mega Pier.

Cruise Ships dock at one of two terminals ( Mega Pier Cruise-Terminal and Mathey Wharf ) relatively close to each other, both at walking distance to the main attractions of Willemstad and with all major amenities and services.

The Mega Pier cruise terminal

If only one cruise ship is in port, the Mega Pier is where she will dock regardless of the size or the length of the stay - the Mega Pier is the one on the left in the picture above .

cruise visitors will find most services and amenities are in the open air terminal next to the Mega Pier - information booth, restrooms, a taxi stand, an independent-tour-operator stand, a couple of places with refreshments and, naturally and inevitably, souvenirs shops.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the terminal but one other service available at the Mega Pier Terminal must be highlighted - a Wheelchair and ECV Rental , ideal for those with mobility difficulties.

The Mega Pier Terminal is a bit farther away from the landmarks of Willemstad but the walk is both pleasant and appealing as you pass along the way through the Renaissance Resort with two famous and connecting malls . On the first one, you will find high-end shops like Adolfo Dominguez, Tiffany & Co, Breitling, Paul & Shark, Hilfiger, Nautica, Mango or Guess and a Starbucks (Free Wi-Fi). The second Mall occupies the area of the 19th century waterfront Rif Fort - along with shops there are services like the Atlantis Adventures (Tours including a Trolley Train ), the Budget Car Rental, an ATM, a few cafés, bars, ice cream shops and a couple of good restaurants.

Once outside the Rif Fort area, the cruise passenger will be at around 600 feet (200 meters) from Brion Square and the floating Queen Emma Bridge - a major landmark of Willemstad.

The Mathey Wharf dock

The Mathey Wharf is the other possible docking pier. With capacity for as many as 4 ships, this terminal occupies the old wharves of Otrabanda and Punda next to Queen Juliana Bridge across the St. Anna Bay.

At the Mathey Wharf the cruise visitor will also find an Information Booth, Restrooms, a Taxi stand, a stand for independent tour operators, and souvenirs shops. Once outside, a left turn will take you pass the wonderful building of the Gouverneur De Rouville Restaurant to Brion Square and the floating Queen Emma Bridge pedestrian cross to Punda - a historical neighborhood of Willemstad where major landmarks are found.

It is impossible to resist the multiple photo opportunities when crossing Queen Emma Bridge with its great sights of the waterfront with its colorful Dutch colonial buildings , the Queen Juliana Bridge, the Fort Amsterdam and endless ocean views.

Once in Punda the Editor recommends a visit to the old Fort and in particular to the Fort Church Museum (open in the morning only until 1:30 pm - entrance US$5.00). This is also the place to hop on the Trolley Train if you wish to sightsee (seating) the major landmarks of Willemstad (slightly over 1 hour, US$25.00).

The main street next to the fort is Breedestraat with many of the duty-free shops Willemstad is known for - Penha, Diamonds International, Effy or Cariloha. Walking along Breedestraat, you will see narrow streets leading into a busy area with more shops - you will feel tempted to explore this area and if bargain-duty-free hunting is your plan that's the place to go. But a little farther east a very nice tree lined open area - Koningin Wilhelminapark (Queen Wilhelmina Park) - is a good place to enjoy a rest on a shaded café .

Photo of Plein Café Wilhelmina in Curaçao

Plein Café Wilhelmina

Walking inland from Koningin Wilhelminapark, along Columbusstraat (Columbus Street), will take you to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue - a unique Jewish Cultural Historical Museum. A bit farther, by the waterfront, the Floating Market is on the northern edge of this area - around 300 meters (900 feet) from the Koningin Wilhelminapark - and a sight not to be missed. From the Floating Market, you can view a typical Dutch bridge - Queen Wilhelmina Bridge - and you should cross it to visit the Curacao Maritime Museum and have a close look at the beautiful Villa Maria next door.

The area between the Floating Market and Koningin Wilhelminapark is an irregular grid of narrow streets and small squares lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants that are a delight to explore. It is bordered on the West side by a scenic waterfront with a series of places to enjoy lunch, a quick bite or just a drink - Iguana Café is a famous spot, and one of the Editor's favorite, to enjoy a rest and catch up with emails as it offers Free Wi-Fi.

Exploring Willemstad: The Port of Curaçao

Willemstad is a walkable port. This means that you walk straight into the hustle and bustle of the capital city when embarking the ship. The districts of Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai en Scharloo are just 5-15 minute walk from the Mega Pier Cruise Terminal.

Upon your arrival in Willemstad, the breathtaking architecture immediately captures your attention. The city boasts a variety of vividly colored buildings that are guaranteed to leave an impression.

Whether it’s the colorful murals of Otrobanda or the charming pastel houses of Punda, each street in Willemstad unfolds as a pleasant surprise.

Punda, characterized by its vividly colored buildings, features the iconic Handelskade waterfront, showcasing a fusion of Dutch, Caribbean, and Spanish architectural influences.

The area offers a vibrant atmosphere with Curaçao markets, local boutiques, and charming cafes along narrow streets, providing a diverse range of items from fashion to (locally crafted) souvenirs.

Amidst shopping, one can enjoy a meal at the numerous outdoor cafes and restaurants.

Make sure to stop at the Wilhelminaplein, where you can take a photo at the colorful Curaçao sign.

When exploring Otrobanda, You’ll be immediately struck by the captivating blend of art and local culture that permeates the entire neighborhood.

Over the last years, numerous colonial-style structures have been restored and painted with vibrant depictions of typical Curaçao scenes on their facades. We love to explore them whenever we walk through the neighbourhood and it’s in my opinion a must when strolling around Willemstad.

Wandering through the streets of Otrobanda immerses you in the sights, sounds, and scents of daily life in Curaçao. The enticing smell of freshly-baked pastechi wafts from local batido trucks, complemented by the lively chatter of locals that fills the air.

Whether observing a spirited game of dominoes or perusing hand-painted souvenirs at the Brionplein, the neighborhood offers a rich tapestry of authentic Curaçao experiences.

When exploring Curaçao ashore or below the surface, you’ll be exposed to a carnival of colors. Pietermaai is the lively neighboorhood where a painter could fill its pallet with the most vibrant hues and create a true masterpiece.

Pietermaai beckons with its assortment of boutique hotels, bars, and restaurants, ensuring there’s always an authentic place to relax just around the corner.

The true magic of Pietermaai reveals itself at night when the neighborhood pulsates with the enchanting blend of music and laughter. Explore the Nieuwestraat and its surrounding streets and alleys. You’ll be in for a treat!

In Scharloo, you’ll notice cool buildings with a mix of architectural styles, like Art Deco, Baroque, Dutch Colonial, all with a touch of Caribbean vibes. Walking around feels like being in a lively exposition.

Scharloo has some awesome paintings on walls that you might have seen in travel magazines. One famous mural is called ‘Three o’clock romance’ by Francis Sling, found at Van Raderstraat and Bitterstraat corner.

When walking from Punda to Scharloo, you will cross the bridge Princess Amalia Bridge. It’s an old-Dutch drawbridge that connects the two neighboorhoods. It’s a hidden gem for photography enthusiasts.

Aerial view including cruise ship in Willemstad, Curação

Situated off the coast of Venezuela, Willemstad is the capital city and main entrance to Curaçao. This Dutch Caribbean island is well known in the Atlantic Ocean and welcomes many cruise visitors.

Cruise terminals are conveniently placed on the island, providing easy access for guests to reach all the attractions in Willemstad.

The port has two docking spots they use as cruise terminals. Both terminals have great transportation access, allowing guests to move around the island’s memorable landscapes and coastal scenes.

Each terminal invites Caribbean experiences with authentic Dutch influences and a unique cultural charm, from open markets with fresh fruits to beautiful colonial architecture rich with history.

Cruise Terminal Information

Both cruise terminals offer unique docking experiences. Mega piers 1 and 2 accommodate large cruise ships that can’t fit through Santa Anna Bay’s narrow opening to the dock at Handelskade in Willemstad.

This placement allows passengers easy access to the city center, starting their tour experience right when they disembark.

The ports have many amenities for your comfort and convenience. You’ll find a variety of shops, restaurants, and other facilities without having to venture far from your ship! Don’t worry about staying connected either – free Wi-Fi is available in areas near the cruise ship pier.

The docking procedures are smooth, ensuring quick arrivals and departures while prioritizing passenger safety.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler on different schedules, Curaçao’s Cruise Terminal always has something new in store!

How to Get Around

Navigating Curaçao is easy, with many transportation options. Two types of public transportation are readily available: the large yellow or blue buses called ‘ Konvooi’ and the smaller, more versatile minivans known as “bus di line.” You can hop on these at various points around town.

If you prefer private transport, taxis wait at the cruise port, offering fixed rates for popular destinations across Curaçao. Car rental agencies near the port provide an excellent option for those seeking freedom to go where they want.

Many attractions in Willemstad are comfortably within walking distance from the port. Additionally, bike rental shops let you pedal your way through scenic routes if you’re up for a bit of exercise during sightseeing!

Local Cuisine & Best Places to Eat

Curaçao’s local cuisine is influenced by Spanish and Caribbean flavors, resulting in a diverse array of dishes to try.

One must-try dish is Keshi Yena , which is considered the signature dish of Curaçao. It is melted cheese stuffed with meat or seafood, creating a flavorful combination. If you are in the mood for a traditional Dutch bar snack, try the Bitterballen, also popular in Curaçao.

For an authentic experience, head to Plasa Bieu (also called Old Market), where you can enjoy local meals made with love by the island’s talented cooks like goat stew, fresh fish, or pumpkin pancakes. Some other recommendations include Perla Del Mar, De Gouverneur , Mundo Bizarro , Café Old Dutch , La Bohème , Plein Café Wilhelmina , and Plasa – all serving delicious food in welcoming settings.

Shopping Opportunities

Willemstad offers an abundance of shopping opportunities. The island has everything you want: retail shops, unique souvenirs, or high-end fashion.

Like many other Caribbean islands, Curaçao is known as a shopping paradise. The colorful harborfront street of Handelskade in Willemstad is a must-visit area for shopping and dining.

Here, you’ll find shopping malls with international brands, art galleries with local talent, and independent boutiques selling one-of-a-kind items. Make sure to set aside some time for a memorable shopping experience!

Local Currency

The official currency of Curaçao is the Antillean Guilder (ANG), also known as the Florin. The currency rate is around 1.80 ANG = 1 USD, depending on which way you are exchanging. US dollars are widely accepted alongside the local currency in Curaçao.

You will find that most places accept both currencies interchangeably without any issues. It makes it convenient for cruise ship travelers who may prefer using US dollars instead of exchanging their money for local currency. Just be sure to check with each establishment if they accept credit cards or prefer cash during your visit. Usually, American Express is not accepted.

There are also ATMs to use your American credit cards. To use your debit, make sure it has the Maestro, Cirrus, and Cashnet system symbols.

Safety Tips

Seatbelts are a must when you’re getting around in Curaçao. Whether you’re riding in a car or taking a taxi, make sure to buckle up for your safety. For extra protection, sitting in the back seat of cars and taxis is also recommended.

If you plan on exploring the island on a motorbike or bicycle, always wear a helmet to protect yourself from any potential accidents. Additionally, it’s best to avoid driving at night to ensure your safety on the road.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Curaçao is from February to May, considered the ideal time for travelers. There are fewer crowds than during peak tourist season, and the weather is more comfortable.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds altogether, it’s recommended to travel off-peak from May to November. Late fall and the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to cruise to Curaçao without dealing with too many tourists.

Colombo cruise port

Port Colombo cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Colombo, Sri Lanka. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Colombo is the principal/largest port and the capital city of Sri Lanka, located on Kelani River's southwestern shores. This is a major cargo terminal (one of the world's largest) with strategic location in the Indian Ocean. Colombo is currently ranked the world's 23 biggest cargo port and also has one of the world's largest man-made harbors. The seaport is also the country's naval base.

From Colombo are exported mainly spices, rubber and tea. This major commercial city also features numerous churches, monuments, museums, fine restaurants and shopping malls. Modern structures and wide avenues contrast with the old Pettah quarter. Notable tourist attractions are the Old Parliament, Presidential residence, Gengarama Temple, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara Temple, Dewiwala Zoo, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Pinnawala elephant orphanage. Kandy is a town located by a beautiful lake high up in the hills. Temple of the Tooth preserves the golden relic of Buddha's eye-tooth.

Port Colombo

Port Colombo (locode LKCMB) is Sri Lanka's principal and largest. In the early 1980s it was expanded and modernized with new gantry cranes (serving large container ships ) and all terminal facilities were upgraded.

The Port's current annual capacity is around 6 million TEU-containers and ~31 million tons of cargoes. Colombo Harbour's main channel was deepened to min-depth/draft 15 m (49 ft). The managing company is SLPA-Sri Lanka Ports Authority (-1980-established).

The 1 million TEUs mark was in 1996. In 1997 was opened the Oil Berth and traffic reached 1,5 million TEUs. In 1998 and 1999 were inaugurated two new container terminals. In 2000 was opened Peliyagoda Container Freight Station and was started North Pier project's Phase 2. In 2002 was opened Ashraff Quay (multi-purpose terminal). In 2003 were opened Unity Container Terminal and Colombo Port Maritime Museum. In 2004 was reported annual volume of 2,2 million TEUs (increasing to 2,45 million in 2005).

In 2008 started the USD 1,2 billion port expansion project with contractor the Japanese company Hyundai Engineering and Construction. By this project (completed in 2012) were built 4 new cargo terminals (3 berths each, total quay length 1200 m, min draft 18 m / 59 ft, max draft / dredging 23 m / 75 ft)). Colombo Harbour's channel width was expanded to 560 m and its draft to 20 m. The turning basin's diameter is 600 m, with min-depth 18 m. This allows the port to handle boxships (container carriers) with max capacity 12000 TEUs. Breakwater's total length is 6830 m (22410 ft).

The first private terminal was awarded to the consortium China Merchants Holdings-Aitken Spence in September 2010, and was opened in 2013.

Port Colombo's South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT, opened in 1999) is leased to an international consortium that includes APM Terminals (Holland-based company) with 33% steak. The container terminal was opened in 1999 as country's first privately-owned terminal. In 2017, the facility reported annual shipping traffic of 1,8 million TEUs, while the seaport's total volume was 6,2 million TEUs.

Colombo South Container Terminal (CSCT) has annual capacity 2.4 million TEUs and is a joint venture between China Merchants Holdings and Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Its construction started in December 2011 and was completed/opened in August 2013.

In April 2014, the company CICT (Colombo International Container Terminals) started full operations. It manages Colombo South Terminal - South Asia's first deepwater terminal with capacity to handle the world's largest boxships. An USD 10 million project was started in 2018 to reduce the environment impact of terminal's cargo operations, By this project, all rubber-tired gantry cranes were replaced from diesel to electric-driven (E-RTGs). Also in 2018 was implemented the "Boat Note" plan to reduce paper use (previously 4 pages per export container on average). The new system is linked directly to Sri Lanka Customs.

In May 2018, the Singapore -headquartered ONE (Ocean Network Express) introduced its EC5 route that also includes Port Colombo. ONE is a container shipping company established in July 2017 as a merger between K-Line, MOL and NYK Line. The weekly EC5 service (launched on April 23, 2018) links Asia with East Coast USA-Canada, with call ports Laem Chabang (Thailand) , Cai Mep (Vietnam) Singapore, Colombo, Suez Canal , Halifax (NS Canada) , USA ( NYC , Savannah GA , Norfolk VA , Jacksonville FL ), and returns eastbound - Halifax-(Suez Canal) -Jebel Ali-Singapore-Laem Chabang.

Currently, Port Colombo has 3 container terminals - Jaya (managed by Sri Lanka Ports Authority), South Asia Gateway (by John Keells Holdings) and Unity ("Colombo International", by China Merchants Port Holdings). As facilities and equipment, the port offers 4x Feeder Berths (serving small boxships), 7x Container Berths (for large vessels), 14x Quay Cranes, 12x Super-Post Panamax Gantry Cranes, 4x Wall Mount Gantry Cranes, 78x RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes) and 285x tractors and trailers.

In 2018, Colombo was ranked first among the world's top 30 global seaports with highest container trade growth in 2018-H1 (first half) - 15,6% growth in TEUs. By the end of 2018, the overall growth in transshipment container throughput jumped to 19,5% (total 4,717746 million TEUs - compared to 3,948163 million TEUs in 2017). Also in 2018 was reported a 28,8% increase (over 2017) in  cruise ship visits - 45 port calls.

On May 25, 2019, three countries (Sri Lanka, India and Japan) signed a deal to jointly built a deepwater container terminal in Port Colombo. The new  East Container Terminal is fully owned by SLPA (Sri Lanka Port Authority) but managed by a joint-venture (Terminal Operations Company) in which Sri Lanka has 51% stake, and 49% is owned by the foreign partners.
