The putter played by every winner on the PGA Tour during the 2022-23 season

Putting is normally a key component to success on the PGA Tour. Given that, it seems logical to take a look at every putter used to win a tour event over the course of the season. As the 2022-23 season wrapped up at the Tour Championship with the 47th and final tournament played (including one team event), Odyssey led the way with 17 wins. Titleist was second with 10, followed by Ping with nine after Viktor Hovland's victory at East Lake. TaylorMade was next with seven wins while L.A.B. had two. Axis, Bettinardi and Swag rounded out the winners with one each.

Cure Putters RX3 Review

More in putters:.

cure putter on tour

50 Words or Less

The Cure RX3 putter provides unparalleled forgiveness and adjustability.  Literally the most forgiving putter available.

Introduction

Forgiveness and adjustability are two areas where putters, and golf clubs in general, have made the biggest strides.  It’s now as common as not for a putter to have adjustable weight, and some even have adjustable length.  When it comes to forgiveness, the use of different materials and space-age designs allow mishits to perform more like pure strikes.

If you’ve been impressed with what you’ve seen from the golf industry so far, buckle up, because  Cure Putters   is taking both forgiveness and adjustability to places we’ve never seen before.

Cure Putters_0267

Creating unbelievable levels of forgiveness requires outside-the-box thinking when it comes to design.  As such, the  Cure Putters  do not look like your garden variety Ansers and Zings.  Each putter in the Cure line up (except the RXi) has the U shape that you see above.  The RX3 is slightly smaller from heel-to-toe, 5.25″, whereas the RX1 and RX2 are 6″.  Another difference between the RX3 and the others is that it is only available in black; the other two models come in a rainbow of colors.

Cure refers to the alignment system on the RX3 as “ Triangulation Alignment .”  The golf ball and the two silver circles on the edges of the putter create a triangle or arrow that many players find easier to aim than traditional lines.  As someone who doesn’t like sight lines on his putters, I think this approach is preferable.

The reason for the inclusion of two pictures above is to show how the look changes when you add more weight.  On the left, you see the putter with all the weights added.  On the right, the putter only has the lighter aluminum weights.

Cure Putters_0246

Sound & Feel

Each Cure Putter  is made from aircraft-grade aluminum which creates a unique sound and feel.   When the putter is unweighted, it sounds fairly traditional , a sound I would describe as a soft “thock.”  When you get all of the weights loaded on, the sound changes completely to a louder, hollow-sounding “pong.”  What’s interesting is that the level of auditory feedback also changes with the weights.  When the putter is lightest, mishits sound very similar to pure strikes.  When the putter is heaviest, toe and heel strikes are much quieter than centered ones.

When it comes to feel, there is very little with the Cure RX3.  The putter has so much mass that striking the ball is barely noticeable.  Even at its lightest, the RX3 barely twists on mishits .

Cure Putters_0266

Performance

Where other putters dip their toes in the pool of adjustability, the Cure Putters   do a cannonball.  Forget adding 10 grams of weight – the RX3 can be set anywhere from 364 to 575 grams!   This obviously makes a massive difference in the way the club feels and how it performs.  Keep in mind that even at its lowest weight, the RX3 is on the upper end of the weight range for modern putters, so if you prefer a truly light putter, this isn’t for you.  For players that use more weight to steady their hands, however, these putters will live up to their name.

Adding weight to the Cure Putters doesn’t just make them heavier, it also makes them more forgiving.  You can see in the picture above that the putter comes with a chart showing just how much difference the weight makes.  In the RX3, the MOI (Moment of Inertia) starts at 6,700 and goes all the way to an astounding 12,800.  The RX1 and RX2 top out even higher, 18,600 and 19,000, respectively.  In simple terms, this putter starts out with loads of forgiveness and can end up being downright ridiculous .  When you mishit a putt with the Cure Putter, it stays on line and gets to the hole.  I found that this is great for short putts, but truly important on long putts where a mishit lag can quickly turn into a three putt.

Weight is not the only adjustability that the Cure Putters have – you can also adjust the lie .  The shaft can be set anywhere from 62 to 80 degrees meaning that it can fit any golfer regardless of height or posture with the turn of a couple screws.  With the right lie, the right weight, and maximum forgiveness, the Cure leaves you with few excuses on the green.

Cure Putters_0249

If you need more forgiveness or more weight in your putter, I’d strongly recommend giving Cure Putters  a try.  Not only are they helping average golfers to have more success on the greens, they’re also in play on the Champions Tour.

I’m looking at the Cure RX3F putter. Do u recommend a straight shaft or offset? I like to think I take the putter back & straight through. The worst part of my game is putting. Im an 18.1 HC at my best but average 20. Any suggestions would be great

' src=

The best suggestion I can give it to get a fitting. Often what we think we’re doing and what we’re actually doing are two very different things.

' src=

If you are right eye dominant go with the offset shaft. Left eye dominant go with the straight shaft. People who are right eye dominant see the line better with an offset putter. Cheers

' src=

I just purchased the RX3 Cure putter 3 weeks ago and have played 5 times a week and I am impressed. I used to pull my putts and with the weight of the putter it works like a pendulum and seems to correct the push or pull motion that a person has. It just seems like it is going to work very well for me. Weights can be added or removed from the putter that gives you a choice of what you are comfortable with in your swing. All I can say is I like it.

' src=

I purchased a RX3 putter last year I started with all the weights on the putter, as I played I started to adjust the weight to where I felt comfortable and confident in my putting. Right now I am at 2 -1/8 oz stainless steel and 2- 1/8 aluminum weights and this seems to work well for me. That is not saying this is best for everyone but the adjustment feature is definite a great feature on this putter any other questions please ask

Cure Tour X3 Putter Review

What we say...

Cure’s Tour X3 putter made it in to our top 10 MOI putters of 2018 in our biggest ever equipment test – Top Gear. Find out what our testers made of it below.

Cure Tour X3 Putter Review:  You should know

All Cure putters are CNC Milled in the USA, and super high MOI is their unique selling point. The Tour X series has a slightly smaller head (than other Cure models) with a sleeker profile, but MOI that blows most leading MOI mallets out of the water. There’s 60g of weight adjustability so expect stability, unmatched forgiveness on mishits, which ultimately translates to better distance and directional consistency.

Cure Tour X3 Putter Review:  We say

We’ve heard golf club designers say time and again how even the worlds best golfers want forgiveness. The issue is most don’t want to give anything up in terms of looks to get it. So if like Cure you chase huge MOI performance at all costs you end up with head shapes, some of which barely resemble putters in some golfers eyes.

For us the Tour X3 is the pick of Cure’s bunch, even though it’s designers say it’s slimmed down it’s still very oversized. We reckon the Tour is incredibly stable throughout any putting stroke, and even though the long face won’t be to all golfers liking, if your putting stroke is wonkier than a three-legged donkey it can’t but help iron out the kinks.

Do putter face grooves really make a difference?

Cure Tour X3 Putter Review: Verdict

We couldn’t run a MOI putter test and leave out the highest MOI performance models on the market. It’s just the trade-offs made to be so forgiving will be seen by some as unpalatable. If like Cure you want to chase MOI performance at all costs, fill your boots, you won’t find higher performance MOI models anywhere else.

Cure Putters Introduces Four Bold New Colors Of High MOI, Fully Adjustable Putters

July 8, 2014

(Flagler Beach, FL) – July 4th weekend, while the sky was ablaze with fireworks, Cure Putters was busy lighting up the greens as the company announced the addition of four bold new colors to their line of completely customizable RX Series Putters. Available colors now include blue, red, orange and hot pink, in addition to the standard black and silver color options.

Said CEO James P. McCarthy, “We are excited to be able to offer these great new colors, but it is really just the icing on the cake. What really matters is that our putters can and will help golfers of any skill level perform better and have more confidence on the greens.”

Cure Putters’ claim to fame is a unique combination of adjustability and design features that help golfers eliminate several key variables that cause putting problems and inconsistency – the first of which is an adjustable lie angle. Golfers can set the shaft to their ideal position and address the ball naturally, the same way every time. Additionally, the shafts are interchangeable and can be easily swapped out at a moments notice by loosening four small bolts. This allows the user to try different shafts or reconfigure the putter from right to left-handed. This is beneficial not only for the instructor or pro shop, who can now custom fit any player in about two minutes, but also for the golfer who wants to experiment with different lengths or styles of shaft by simply changing the shaft.

Next, the adjustable weighting system enables the player to dial in the perfect feel to suit their stroke and tempo, while delivering the highest Moment Of Inertia (MOI) of any putter – a staggering range of 11,000 to over 20,000 MOI. This dramatically higher MOI makes the putter extremely stable and incredibly forgiving, virtually eliminating mishits and resulting in unprecedented accuracy and distance control.

The RX2 model also features a Patent Pending Triangulation Alignment System invented by Former PGA TOUR Commissioner, Deane Beman, which makes aiming easier, more accurate and dependable.

Cure Putters has gained tremendous momentum since its launch at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show where it earned the #1 spot on the PGA.com Product Spotlight. In June, based on feedback from Tour players, Cure Putters added an offset shaft to their product line and now with six great colors to choose from, they have added one more dimension to a truly personalized and customized club fitting experience.

Said McCarthy, “The original idea for the colors came from some of the LPGA players at the PGA Merchandise show. They wanted to order several heads to match different outfits. Once we started to show the first color samples to the guys on the PGA TOUR and to the amateurs at our green grass locations, they thought colors would be a fantastic advantage.” McCarthy continued, “We’ve got some local players here in Jacksonville, for example, who played for the University of Florida and matched a blue head with an orange grip. Adding colors simply gives us one more advantage over other putter companies when it comes to complete customization. Whether it is your school colors, your favorite outfit or you simply find a color that helps you visualize your stroke better, Cure Putters offers choices like no other putter company on the planet.”

“In addition to the performance advantage offered by our design, we feel that also giving a player a better visual can improve their confidence over the ball, so whether it’s looking down at the alignment pin on the RX1, the Triangulation Alignment Discs on the RX2 or just seeing a different color…it can make a big difference,” said Cure Putters inventor, Steve Davis. Davis went on to explain, “This is not a painted on color. We add the colors through an anodizing process, which actually makes the color part of the aluminum surface and very durable.”

Cure Putters’ new colors are available today as an immediate option on the Cure Putters website (www.cureputters.com), as well as in green grass shops and retail locations.

Each putter comes complete with a standard weight kit and head cover, as well as the tools and instructions for adjusting the lie angle and weight for a custom fit. Cure RX putters are available in any length shaft from 32″ – 50″ with a choice of a straight or offset shaft. Standard grip options include a WINN midsize pistol (black) or a matching colored Iomic grip. Super Stroke grips are also available as an upgrade.

Founded by PGA Professional, Jeff Ryan, and partner Steve Davis, an architect with a scratch handicap, the Veritas Golf Company has invented what former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman has called “the most technologically advanced putters ever made.” The first putter invented by Davis, the Cure RX1 Putter, represented a breakthrough in putter engineering. Based on the highest MOI design in the industry and adjustable lie angles, and adjustable weighting, Beman says “the RX1 made other putters obsolete.”

In fact, Mr. Beman was so impressed after testing the RX1 that he became a part owner in the company and collaborated with Mr. Davis on the design of the RX2, which incorporates Beman’s own patent pending triangulation alignment system.

Beman says, “Golf instructors have tested thousands of golfers; and find that golfers, including PGA Tour pros, cannot, and do not, aim their putter where they think they are aimed. The Cure RX2 Putter is simply the best prescription available.”

About Veritas Golf Company: Veritas Golf is a science-based manufacturer of great putters, thinking outside the box and producing innovative golf equipment that is “Engineered To Inspire Confidence.” Veritas means “Truth” in Latin, and Veritas Golf is committed to game-improving equipment through better engineering. A famous architect, Louis Sullivan, coined the phrase “form follows function.” Veritas Golf has created a new “form” of putter based on the functional requirements of lie adjustability and increased moment of inertia. What resulted is a putting breakthrough. Cure Putters can be found on the web at cureputters.com, on Facebook at (https://www.facebook.com/VG1putter) and Twitter at (@cureputters).

Cure Putters offer an antidote for flat stick woes

by Craig Lemley | Golf clubs , Products , Reviews | 5 comments

Cure putters

According to a study by Dr. Lucius Riccio, an original member of the USGA’s handicap research team, cited by golfpracticeguides.com , the average golfer makes 36 strokes or less with a putter per 18-hole round. That’s two putts per hole, and, according to our math skills, is pretty much half of the total number of strokes you’d make for a par 72 round. Kinda makes you realize just how awful three putts can be, and how important your flat stick really is.

Practice usually does make perfect, but when you’ve reached a point in your game where you’re comfortable with your putting stroke, it’s time to tinker with the tech.

Like drivers, big brand names typically dictate what most consider “the best” putters on the market, but if you’re really serious about saving strokes on the green, consider looking at smaller, specialized clubmakers. Cure Putters is a perfect example. The company launched with two models at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show to immediate success. 5 years later Cure touts 12 models , each designed to perform for every golfer.

Cure TourX1

Cure’s Tour X1 blade putter

Cure’s claim to fame is its “extremely High MOI” (moment of inertia). As the company explains on the website , a common misconception regarding high MOI putters is that they only offer forgiveness on off-center hits. They certainly do, but Cure’s high MOI designs also keep the clubface more square throughout the entire stroke, which, combined with that off-center forgiveness, equals more distance and directional control. (These results are also based on a player’s individual “IDEAL WEIGHT” — which basically means you’ll want to be fitted to optimize the weight of your Cure putter.)

The company graciously sent 3 putters built to spec to the CGB headquarters for review purposes, and our first impressions from the practice green: Cure = Pure. (We won’t be sending these back.)

With my usual blade putter, a pre-Titleist Scotty Cameron, I sometimes struggle with the initial takeaway in my backswing, wavering off square from the ball within the first few inches of my stroke. When this happens, I find myself focusing solely on correcting my clubface mid swing — often over or under compensating — and neglecting the other factors determining if the ball goes in the hole or not, like distance control. But after several practice putts with the Cure Tour X1 ($299.95), I found myself having to force the clubhead to waver on my takeaway to produce similar mishits. The Tour X1’s aluminum clubhead, with tungsten weights in the toe and heel and removable steel weights in the back, helps promote a straight and silky smooth stroke overall — truly noticeable — and the feel and sound of the ball coming off the 4.85″ milled face is unreal. Putt after putt after putt with the Cure rolled as pure and on line as one could ask for, and even toed and heeled shots only went slightly off line, still delivering not-so-terrible results. The confidence this club brings to my backswing allows me to focus on my desired line and pace, knowing the ball will come square off the clubface. Finding the pace can be a bit tricky to get used to if your Cure is any heavier than the putter you’re use to playing — really, though, when is it not? — and you may find it all to easy to muscle it past the hole until you get it dialed in (all the more reason to get fitted.)

The Tour X1 is a beautiful club to look at, too. Though one of Cure’s smaller designs, the clubhead is still larger than most blades you’ll see, but with a solid black finish, hidden weights and clean lines, it isn’t distracting to the eye or gaudy in any way. Aside the X1, Cure’s Tour Series includes two mallet designs in the X2 and X3, both with seemingly impressive features along the same lines.

Cure CX1

Cure’s CX1 blade putter

The praise continues on to the CX1 ($279.95) from Cure’s Classic Series . With a slightly larger 5″ clubface, the CX1 touts the same weight systems, milled face and high MOI as the Tour X1, but the slightly bulkier design reads and feels a lot more like a mallet hybrid than a traditional blade putter — the best of both worlds. Speaking of mallets, the Classic Series includes two traditional mallet designs with the CX3 and CX4, and rounds out its blade design offerings with the CX2. The Classic Series putters are also available in red, black, or white, to add another touch of style.

While it’s clear Cure putters isn’t making your average blades and mallets, the company obviously wants to make sure it stands out from the pack. The RX Series does an excellent job of that — easily the most customizeable putters that have ever come through the CGB headquarters. The RX Series sports an eye-catching door handle design and “t bar” alignments; the putters vary by profile size with the RX3 ($259.95) being the smallest with a 5.25″ milled face. Other than that, there’s little you can’t customize on these putters. Each comes with two, 12g, 1/4″ aluminum and two, 35g, 1/4″ steel toe and heel disk weights added and removed with a standard hex tool (additional weight sets sold separately). Not only that, the RX Series boast interchangeable shafts and customizeable lie angles.

When we first heard of this feature, honestly, is sounded like a pain in the ass to have to worry about or adjust in on the fly, but that is far from reality. Two screws on the bottom of the putter loosen the shaft housing with a 1/4 turn, allowing you to move the shaft freely and adjust the angle as needed. All in all, the RX Series may sound more like a DeChambeau-like science experiment than something an average golfer would have in the bag, but the customization process takes about as long as it does to adjust the loft on your driver — and a lot more fun — so don’t let that be a deterrent. Sorry, lefties, the RX Series putters come RH only, in black or red.

Cure RX3

Cure’s RX3 putter

While we’ve only had the chance to play those noted above, we can assume the same performance rings true throughout the company’s offerings. Cure putters — all of which are USGA conforming — come equipped with straight or offset shafts in standard lengths (custom lengths available by request), a branded Winn Pistol midsize grip and durable leather clubhead cover. The company also offers accessories and gear , as well as a trade-in program . Really, if you’re interested in making more gains on the green, you’d be remiss to not try a Cure putter, at the very least. With an optimized stroke using your own ideal weight, you my find yourself inching closer to that 36 or below number at the end of your round.

Herb Palmer

I just ordered a new RX-3. But when I tried calling the number posted on the website (904-503-3468), I got a voicemail for a totally different number. I then Googled the physical address 9839 Old Baymeadows Rd., in Jacksonville FL. and all I saw was a strip mall. Did I just get burned?

Craig Lemley

Hey Herb. That is pretty strange. We’ve reached out ourselves to see if we can nail down the proper contact information. I’ll circle back here if/when we hear back.

Sure thing! Sounds like an old phone number is still listed there. An email to [email protected] is going to be your best bet.

I appreciate your time, thanks! Can’t wait to get the RX3!

Cure CX1 Putter Review

Cure CX1

One of the standout features of the CX1 is its oversized head and weighting system. This design provides unrivaled stability and forgiveness, giving you the confidence to make those crucial putts. The stable stroke and consistent roll on the ball are simply unmatched by any other putter I've tried. It's like having a secret weapon on the green.

Updated February 2024 to update current pricing information.

Drive for show and putt for dough. Everyone knows the old saying, but no one takes it as seriously as the engineers and designers at Cure Putters. When Cure first introduced its CX1 putter in 2016, it was not only a massive success, but it also received the Silver rating on Golf Digest’s Hot List.

Cure Putters CX1 Golf Putter, Platinum, 35', Right Hand

Since then, Cure has kept the look the same but made significant advancements to improve feel at impact. Players from the professional ranks to the weekend club golfer have widely embraced the CX1 for its state-of-the-art construction, design, and consistency. If you’re a player looking for the very best in putter design and performance, then the CX1 may be the club for you.

Key Features

  • Tungsten weights in the heel and toe create extremely high MOI for greater forgiveness and control at impact.
  • The higher center of gravity, lower loft, and deeper face get the ball rolling more quickly helping it stay on line.
  • Six adjustable weights allow players to adjust the head weight anywhere from 334 grams to 376 grams depending on personal preference or green speeds.

Cure CX1 Putter Detailed Review

Design and technology.

When Cure Putters came into existence in 2013, its founders identified several problems plaguing golfers who are inconsistent on the green. With the CX1, Cure developed a putter that can easily alleviate many of these issues, including: unforgiving technology, ill-fitting equipment, lack of stability and control through impact, and inconsistent roll off the face. With a slightly oversized 5-inch blade, the CX1 boasts a precision milled perimeter weighted face that is made of aircraft aluminum. This innovative design helps to move the center of gravity higher than on most putters, so that the contact point is at the equator of the golf ball instead of below it. Coupled with a loft of only 2.5 degrees, the CX1 produces putts that can quickly roll off its face, alleviating the skid effect typical of putters with higher lofts and lower centers of gravity.

Cure CX1 Putter

Central to consistent putting is also having the proper fit. With Cure’s innovative shaft disc assembly, players can quickly and easily make simple adjustments to their length and lie angle . The CX1 putter provides players with interchangeable center or heel shafts in variations of both standard and mid-length. Additionally, the putter’s lie angle can easily be adjusted with a few twists of a simple wrench. Six adjustable heel and toe weights can be paired in a variety of combinations to fit your personal preference. All these options give players plenty of choices to create the perfect putter for their stroke, body type, and green speed.

Cure CX1 Putter Review

  • The larger head and higher center of gravity increase MOI for greater forgiveness
  • The ability to customize shaft length, lie angle, and weight give players plenty of options when their CX1 Putter
  • Rotating shaft disc assembly makes the fitting process extremely easy and efficient for players
  • The Cure CX1 is priced higher than many other putters available on the market
  • Without a proper fitting from a professional, some players may wind up with a putter that does not suit them
  • The limit of a single head design may limit the choices of players that prefer a different look

The Cure CX1 comes in a mallet head style with finish choices of platinum, black, or red. The length variations in the standard length are 33, 34 and 35 inches. Shaft options include either heel or center shaft in a chrome or black PVD finish. The loft is 2.5 degrees and the standard lie angle is 70 degrees though this is easily adjustable. The alignment on the top to the head is a single white line. Six adjustable weights create a weight range from 334 grams to 376 grams.

The Cure CX1 leaves no stone left unturned when it comes to putter technology, design, and customizability. With cutting edge materials and design proven to increase consistency and stability, the CX1 sets itself apart from other putters on the market.

Rolled my RX1 today. Overall my distance control/speed with it is the best I have had in awhile. Not sure I want to mess with the weight setup but I will probably tinker a little. The rx2 or rx2 tour is my ponder.

I gotta say that the coverage this week really opened my eyes to these putters. At first glance a while ago I quickly dismissed them. Then, during the event I went back and reread what was out there and must also say that the pics presented in the event thread started a ponder. I might be looking for a RX1 to try out. Looking forward to seeing how everyone progresses with these. JM

cbaker2882 said: So Cure putters, huh? There isn't enough good things to say about Jeff and John that we met this weekend. Truly great guys who believe wholeheartedly they have a useful and helpful product that could help a lot of people, and it shows in their work. That passion is no doubt set out throughout the entire company from what it seems. As for the putters themselves, I'll talk about the specific model I went with - the RX2 tour. I also believe I was the only one that ended up with the RX2 tour, at least at the event itself: Initial thoughts on the product aren't much different than what people thought when you initially saw them online. They are big. Some of them really big. But I found a good match visually for me in the RX2 tour, which sits right about 5.5" for the face length. This is the information as to product specs for their putters off the cure website. Size Material Weight MOI Lie Sole Alignment Hand Shaft RX1 6" Alum. The weight on the RX2 tour as you can see from the chart above can be set between 364 with absolutely nothing on it but the screws, all the way up to 575 with the additional weight kit - which based on the chart below, shows that is accomplished with 3 of the stainless steel weights on it. The sound is definitely different compared to "normal" putters, but you get over it pretty quickly (or at least I did). I also noticed as you add/drop certain weights, it seems to adjust the way it sounds slightly. But the RX3F and RXi in certain combos definitely had the least noticeable sound to them. Dan had the RXi and Mike in our group on Saturday was using the RX3F, and I honestly couldn't hear any type of sound coming from either. So if the sound is a big turn off for you, I'd look at those two. This isn't a combo that can be accomplished with the weights that typically come with the putter, but I ended up trying it out with some of the extra weights they had there. Plus the blue makes it look cool haha. Here are some pictures of that combo: It ended up working so well for me the night of Putt Putt that I literally asked John if they would trade my Odyssey for it...which he unfortunately said no. Little did I know I'd be walking away with it the very next morning though! I made sure I got it for our Saturday round and I'm glad I did. I rolled it pretty well and had a couple 15-20 footers drop for me. The technology of the high MOI definitely seems to work, and these putters have it in a package that although looks odd, inspires a lot of confidence, and I honestly stepped up to every putt thinking that it had a chance. They might not be for everyone, but I definitely would say that everyone should at least give them a shot. If I hadn't won one on Saturday, I probably would have bought one...I believe in it that much, at least for myself. That's all for now though, but I'll continue to update as I get more time on course with it. Click to expand...

Tinkered with the weights again last night to try it at a lower weight, and ended up with just the 1/4" aluminum at 388. What Putters Do the Pros Use? Top 100 PGA Tour Player Guide (2023 update)

Graeme Hay

Written by Graeme Hay | Last Updated: 18/04/2024

Jon Rahm celebrating holing a putt

Choosing a putter used to be a relatively easy task simply because there were not that many options available.

In today’s game however, as with everything in golf, the models of putter available are almost endless and it can make your head hurt sometimes trying to work out which one will work best for you.

But with close to 40% of any golfer’s shots, irrespective of their standard, being played on the putting green it makes sense that a lot of attention is paid to putters and especially on the PGA Tour.

So to see what the best pros in the business consider to be the best putters we analyzed in detail which model each of the top 100 golfers on the PGA Tour is using.

Odyssey putters are the most used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 33 choosing one including Jon Rahm and Sam Burns. Scotty Cameron putters are the next most popular with 32 using them. PING models are chosen by 15 with TaylorMade putters used by 9. Bettinardi and LAB Golf putters are played by 3 and 2 pros respectively.

While you would think the make and model of the putters used by some of the best players on the planet is where the putter story would end in the modern game things are never that straight forward.

And as we went deeper into our analysis the specialisation of putters grips as well as the putters themselves also became clearly apparent in addition to the frequency with which the top 100 will use custom made prototype putter models made specifically for them.

It was also interesting for us to see what has changed since we last carried out this detailed study a couple of years back!

TaylorMade's Spider X putter

Most Popular Putters Used by the Top 100 PGA Tour Pros

If the top golfers on the PGA Tour want a new putter they simply have to wander to the nearest tour performance truck of one of the main manufacturers and they will be able to pick up and test out whatever model they want.

It is therefore not surprising that our research found 75 different models of putter being used by the best players on the Tour.

TaylorMade’s Spider X putter is the most popular among the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 6 using it, including Rory McIlroy. Scotty Cameron’s Phantom X T5 is the next most common with 4 using it. Their Circle T009 and Newport 2 putters along with Odyssey’s White Hot OG #5 & O-Works #1W are the next most used with 3 users each.

Golfing Focus infographic of the different brands of putter being used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros

That there are so many different putters being used is just one indication of the depth the pros will go to in ensuring the smallest club in their bag (assuming it’s not a broom handle putter!) is going to deliver the goods on the greens.

When it comes to the weight of the putter for example some players will not accept anything less than perfection.

Bettinardi for instance has a tolerance of plus or minus 1 gram on the putters coming off their production line.

And what that means is that if the head weight of a putter is 360g some customers would get a putter weighing 359g while others would receive one of 361g.

Former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick however will not use his Bettinardi DASS BB1 Flow Tour Dept putter however unless it is exactly 346g which gives an indication of how exacting the top pros are when it comes to their putter design.

In addition we found the majority of the top 100 PGA Tour pros – over 55% based on the data available – using ‘prototype’ putters that have been set up specifically for that individual player.

What was also noticeable however was that the dominance of Odyssey and Scotty Cameron putters among the top 100 PGA Tour pros remained from the last time we did this in-depth study two years ago.

Both increased their market share among this elite group with 65% of the top 100 using one of these two brands compared to 60% a couple of years back.

PING and TaylorMade putters we found once again made up the best of the rest although TaylorMade’s share dropped back to 9% from 14% even in spite of their Spider X model once again topping the charts as the most used among the top 100.

Despite all the variety in the putters we found though it was also interesting to note that not all the golfers in the top 100 automatically used the latest models of putters produced by the main manufacturers and continue to use older putters on the greens.

That being said when it comes to their putters it seems there remains a consensus among this group that Odyssey and Scotty Cameron putters are better than the rest.

Do Pros Use Blade or Mallet Putters? It’s Still Majority Mallet!

When Golfing Focus first looked in detail at the putters being used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros a couple of years back one of the key elements we wanted to investigate was the split between mallet and blade putters.

Back then we discovered 65% of them favoured more forgiving mallet style putters over the traditional blade putters but would that trend still be the case now?

60% of the top 100 PGA Tour pros use mallet putters including Rory McIlroy & Max Homa. In this majority group some choose smaller ‘mid-mallet’ putters including Jon Rahm & Viktor Hovland while Adam Scott’s broom handle is also a mallet design. The other 40% which includes Scottie Scheffler & Jordan Speith use blade putters.

While some pros, including the great Tiger Woods, almost never change their putter – Woods used his famous Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS in 14-of-his-15 major championship victories – many other pros are constantly experimenting with different makes and even between mallets and blades.

Rory McIlroy for example switched out his normal TaylorMade Spider X putter prior to this year’s Masters reverting back to the blade Scotty Cameron Newport 2 he used to win his first two Majors.

He has since switched back to the mallet Spider X but it just serves to highlight how the top pros will not only change putter but also between blades and mallets as their confidence on the greens ebbs and flows.

Justin Thomas, who often tinkers with his putters, normally puts a mallet Scotty Cameron Phantom X T5 in play but also travels with the old-school Circle T 303 SSS blade he first used in middle school because “… it’s good for practice.”

Former Masters champions Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama are also well known for constantly testing different putters from week to week on tour.

Indeed Matsuyama is probably the most constant putter switcher of the current crop of top PGA Tour pros and can sometimes have 4, 5 and even 6 different putters in his bag during practice rounds.

In fact he tests so many putters that according to Scotty Cameron he has the ‘coolest’ putter collection on Tour!

Golfing Focus infographic of the number of mallet and blade putters being used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros

What Putter Grips Do the Pros Use?

When I took up golf a few decades ago I would never have imagined that what grip you put on your putter was something for which you would have many options.

Putters came with the grip that they were made with and that was it.

And beyond wanting the classic ‘PING’ grip which seemed to be used by all the major champions at the time it just wasn’t something you paid attention to.

Fast forward to today and there are now 16 putter grip manufacturers each offering sometimes more than a dozen options in multiple different sizes.

So what putter grips are the top pros now using?

Superstroke putter grips are the most used by the top 100 pros on the PGA Tour with 40% choosing them. The Traxion Pistol GT 1.0 grip is their most popular grip model but the most used putter grip among this elite group is Scotty Cameron’s ‘Dancing Cameron’ grip. It is chosen by 10 of the top 100 including Justin Thomas.

Superstroke's Traxion Pistol GT 1.0 putter grip

While Superstroke putter grips clearly find favour amongst the top pros on Tour putter grips produced by PING and Odyssey are also picked by close to a quarter of the top 100.

Scotty Cameron putter grips meanwhile are chosen by 20 of them.

Indeed our detailed analysis of the putter grips used by the top 100 PGA Tour players found close to 50 different putter grip models and sizes being used.

Justin Thomas for example once again demonstrated his inclination to play around with his putter set up when he changed from the oversized SuperStroke Traxion Pistol GT Tour grip he has used for most of his career to a Dancing Cameron just prior to this year’s Masters.

Clearly the days of the putter grip not being something to even consider are long gone and the pros spend a great deal of time selecting the grip and not just the putter that will help them hole as much as possible on the greens!

[Editor’s note – To find out what grips the top 100 PGA Tour pros use on the rest of their clubs check out our in-depth look at them here .]

What Putter Length Do Pros Use? That’s Not Always the Full Story!

The final element of the putters the top pros on Tour use that we looked at was putter length.

Given the importance of the correct putter length in relation to helping ensure you are in the best position with your eyes straight over the ball at address we wanted to see whether there was any consensus on this among the best players in the world.

As a whole the most common putter length among the top 100 pros on the PGA Tour is 35 inches. Sam Burns, Max Homa, Jordan Speith and Billy Horschel are some of the players choosing this length of putter. Tyrell Hatton uses a much shorter 32 1/8″ putter while Aaron Wise uses a long 46-inch broom handle model.

The standard length of the average putter is between 33 and 35 inches but as you would expect we found a number of players outside that band.

Scottie Scheffler for example chooses a longer 36″ length for his Scotty Cameron Timeless TT putter while both Tony Finau and Jon Rahm opt for 37″ putters.

Given these three are all tall men measuring 1.9m and above this is to be expected but it is important to remember that ‘optimal’ putter length is not just solely based on height with arm length, personal preference and putting style also needing to be taken into consideration.

For example although Viktor Hovland is around 10cm shorter than Scottie Scheffler he also chooses a 36″ putter length.

However if you look closely when Hovland putts you will notice that he grips his Ping PLD DS72 putter down the grip around 1 to 2 inches so his personal preference means he is in effect ‘playing’ a shorter putter than the simple length measurement would indicate.

It is also interesting to note that the top pros can also adjust their putter length depending on their health .

The great Tiger Woods for example, having used a 35 ¼ inch putter length throughout his career, extended it to 35 ½ inches a couple of years ago in an attempt to ease the pain of his constant back problems.

So when you see what length of putter a pro is using that information alone may not tell the whole story!

Before you go …

Do you ever watch TV coverage of the pros on Tour and come away thinking that the top players hardly ever miss a putt?

Read our next article to take a closer look at how good they really are and to discover how amateurs by comparison are not that bad at putting themselves!

I picked up a cx2 cheap on RBG a while back swapped the grip to a tour SNSR 140 straight, played with the weights a bit ended up leaving them all in very forgiving rolls nicely only problen is now everything else looks way to small.

I actually liked it so much i just pre ordered a cure tour x3 cant wait to roll it

I got an RX5, and it works like a charm...

...I love the extremely high MOI and especially the adjustability!

I experimented with an RX4 for a bit but it didn't work any better than my gamer which is a murdered out TaylorMade Spider center shaft, which is a lot prettier. They're not pretty but if they work, they work.

Love my RX5, but I've got to get my hands on one of these bad boys soon...

They have come a long way in the looks dept.

I've been gaming the RX3 since 2016. I love it when people ask stupid questions like "Does that thing pick up satellite radio?"....blah blah blah. I'll reply, "No radio signals, just pars and birdies!"

I’m a large putter fan and tried a Cure. Just didn’t work for me but glad others are enjoying and because Jerry Kelly is my dopelganger, i always root for him!

Had a CX2 for a while, great putter, wonderful distance control and super hot MOI so you don't have to swing out of your shoes on long distance / slow greens putts. Sold it when a Sabertooth entered the scene and have regretted that sale ever since.

  • 9 months later...

Decided to bite the bullet and and switched too a Cure CX1 this winter putting in the basement for a few months should have us feeling like old friends by spring. But first I had to tweak my Cure. My journey began on eBay picked up a clean black CX1 for $65 I’ve never liked the look of a double bend shaft so pulled the shaft and replaced it with a black 3.5 inch slant hosel adapter from Golf Works and a black step less shaft.

I cut to 39” club length and topped with a Red Winn 15” mid size grip at 128 grams.

The final touch for me was a custom red and black knit head cover from knittwice (Etsy).

I had to replace the heel weights with 1/4” long set screws to maintain the face balance characteristics of the putter. After selling the shaft and original head cover on eBay I’ve got $70 in the club and it putts like a dream.

Those look like PXG putters a little.

Nebraska, you are on to something there with your PN modification. Looks much better. I like what Cure is doing but wish they would keep slimming down and making them look more traditional.

I just bought a cure CX1 with a flat cat grip on the Bay for $60 shipped and putting in the basement I have mixed results. My interest in buying it was that my current putter seemore original was feeling way too lite. The ball does come off the face nice but my stroke feels sloppy with it. I love the mod that Nebraska did but I will wait to see how it performs on a real course.

PingPoncho

I have the Cure RX4 and was debating on buying the Cure CX2. Does the CX2 have a better feel than the RX4? Or could you describe any differences if you have played both?

  • 1 month later...

Thanks I thought it looked nicer too. Took me along time to decide to try the Cure been using the same Ping Karsten 5 for 7 or 8 years. I’ve got to confess I got the Cure all setup spent many nights alone in the basement and thought it was love. We (me and the wife) headed south for some winter golf. I could not get used to how it looked on the green. Just never felt comfortable over a putt it was weird cause I always feel good putting its the strength of my game. Tried a Red Odyssey Tank #1 but no. I’m now stroking a liking the results a RIFE Switchback XL.

MattM97

I picked up a CX1 from 2ndSwing, gonna extend it to 36", have a SS Slim 3.0 grip I'll throw on, then add in the 75g counterbalance when I order it, the 50g should do for now. I'm also tinkering with the weights, I've found removing 2 weights (14g) from the toe give me a very slight toe up hang and a much better feel.

It will be my backup after my Edel arrives.

YOUR FAVORITE PRO’S FAVORITE PUTTER

"It's a great putter and it's completely changed my career for the last month - just being able to be on the plus side of strokes gained putting. As soon as I put this putter in the bag...."

Robert Garrigus, PGA Tour Player

"I finally just started recently using the Cure putter. I've tried several others. If you want a putter that's perfectly balanced and comes off the face as sweet as anything, a Cure putter is probably the one for you. I've gone with the CX2 and I'm doing very well with it."

Peter Senior, Champions Tour Player

"My Cure RX Series putter is the most stable putter I have ever used. My putting stats have improved dramatically. The ball rolls great and I have averaged nearly 5 birdies per round! The results speak for themselves and I encourage all players to check it out."

Rod Spittle, Champions Tour Player

"I've been putting with the Cure for over a year now. My confidence on the greens is higher than it has been in a very long time. I give a lot of that credit to the Cure technology. Looking forward to more WINS with this putter."
