But then there’s holding space to love people of difference – people who are in the midst of war, people where there is pain and suffering. That’s what big big love is: holding space for the personal and the worldly.”   Known all over the world for their energizing live shows that foster an invigorating sense of community, Michael Franti & Spearhead embody that attitude as they embark on the Big Big Love Tour 2023, featuring over 50 shows from May to August, including stops at California Roots Music & Arts Festival, Reggae Rise Up and Central Park Summer Stage, along with a highly anticipated return to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre.   Tickets go on sale this Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. local time. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Q: How should I place my order? Can I purchase over the phone?  

A: Unfortunately, we are unable to process any orders over the phone and therefore all packages must be purchased online.  

Q: Can I acquire Accessible Seating as part of a VIP program?  

A: Most venues offer accessible seating areas to accommodate their guests. Availability and type of accessible seating tickets will vary based on each venue’s policies and/or the type of event taking place. If you would like to inquire about accessible seating as part of a VIP program, please reach out to us at [email protected] immediately after purchase. We will go over any available options.  

Q: Does this package have a minimum age?  

A: Most shows are open to guests of all ages. However, the age policy varies with each venue. You can typically find the age policy via the “more information” button on the ticketing page, but if it is not there, you may also refer to the venue’s website for details regarding your specific event.  

Q: I purchased a package as a gift, but I will not be in attendance. How can my friend and/or family member pick up their ticket on my behalf?  

A: You can do what is called an alternate pick-up! Simply provide the new guest with:  

• A photocopy of your photo ID  
• A note authorizing the new guest to check in for your order.   

These items can be digital copies or photos on a cellphone . As long as the new guest has these items, in addition to the show ticket(s), he/she will be able to check-in for the order without you being present. Please note that the informational email regarding check-in (and any additional email correspondence from us) is sent to purchasers only, so you will need to forward any emails to the new guest.  

Q: Can I choose whether I get a General Admission ticket or a Premium Reserved seated ticket?  

A: Yes! You can narrow down your ticket search during the ticket selection process as long as both options are available. Please note – the “Stay Human” Experience allows you to select either a GA ticket or a Premium Reserved ticket (based on availability) while the Red Rocks Backstage Tour Experience does not have a GA option.  

Q: What is a General Admission ticket?  

A: General Admission tickets, also commonly labeled as “GA”, are tickets that have no specific seats assigned to them and are generally Standing Room Only.  

Q: What is a Premium Reserved ticket and where will it be located?  

A: A Premium Reserved ticket is a seated ticket. The Premium Reserved seats included with the VIP packages will be within rows 5-7.   

Q: Can I purchase a VIP Package at the Box Office?  

A: No, VIP Packages will not be available for purchase at the Box Office. You must purchase online ahead of time.  

Q: Where will I receive my tickets?  

A: During the purchase process, you will have the option of selecting your ticket delivery method. If you choose to have your tickets shipped or emailed to you in advance, you will still need to check in with us at the event to ensure you get to take advantage of all the perks that come with your package! If you choose to pick up your tickets at Will Call, please be sure to stop by the venue box office to retrieve your tickets prior to meeting us at VIP check-in. As it gets closer to the event, the purchaser will receive an informational email including the exact time and location for VIP check-in. Please bring valid photo identification and stay tuned for that email!  

Q: When can I check in as a VIP guest?  

A: While the exact time varies with each show, VIP check-in will generally occur about 2 hours before doors open to the public. We will provide the specific times and check-in location for your show in our informational email that will be sent about one week before the concert. Please refer to those confirmed times when sent to you!  

Q: If I’m unable to make it to VIP Check-in during check-in hours, how can I receive my merchandise?  

A: For merchandise distributed at the show, the VIP details email sent prior to the show date will note when and where to claim your package. If you do not collect your items during the VIP check-in hours listed in the informational email, we are unable to mail the items after the show .  

Q: Is VIP parking included?  

A: Parking is not included with this package, but parking may be available at the concert venue. Please refer to the venue’s website for more information regarding parking.  

Q: I plan on purchasing a Red Rocks Shuttle Pass. Will that get me to the venue in time for VIP pre-show activities?

A: The Red Rocks Shuttle program will not get you to the venue in time for VIP pre-show activities as that shuttle is designed to get riders to the venue in time for general doors. While they are all sold as roundtrip passes, you are welcome to just use the pass for your return trip. 

Q: Is there a secure space where I can leave my merchandise during the show?  

A: Once you receive everything at check-in, you may have the opportunity to bring the items back to your car before entering the concert venue. We cannot guarantee this, though, as it ultimately depends on venue security prerogatives.  

Q: When will the pre-show performance take place?  

A: More specific times and locations will be announced in the informational email we will send to you about a week before the event.  

Q: What is the acoustic performance going to be like?  

A: It will be a small performance with just Michael Franti! In one word: intimate.  

Q: Can I get an autograph with Michael Franti during the VIP group photo?  

A: Autographs are not included as part of this package, but we promise – the intimacy of the experience will more than make up for the lack of any signatures! Guests who purchase the Backstage Tour Experience will receive a limited edition pre-autographed poster.    

Q: Can I get a solo picture with Michael Franti during the photo opportunity?  

A: Solo photos are not offered as a part of the VIP Package offerings.   

Q: Can I bring my own camera?  

A: Typically, you can bring your camera phone and/or a standard point-and-shoot, but venues usually prohibit cameras with detachable lenses. Moving from hip-hop to nostalgic R&B and soul, Michael Franti has travelled across a broad musical spectrum throughout his career, yet his music has always been political and socially conscious…

Growing up in Oakland, California, US, Michael Franti was raised in a black community by his adopted white parents, an experience which fostered a deep awareness of his cultural identity, a theme which Franti often tackled through his music. This awareness of self led to Franti to become deeply interested in social issues, displaying the same sense of passion as Gil Scott-Heron.

Franti’s first foray into music was in 1986 with his drum ’n’ bass/industrial outfit, the Beatnigs, which came to an end after only one album release. Franti then turned his head to hip-hop, forming the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, fusing jazz-influenced beats with hard-hitting raps that was at odds with mainstream rap, attacking the misogyny and materialism inherent in the music.

Franti’s next project was with Spearhead, delivering socio-political hip-hop, addressing matters such as homelessness, police brutality and the increasing AIDS epidemic. Spearhead garnered critical acclaim through their releases, enjoying over a decade of success that offered a voice against social injustice.

In 2003, Franti released his first solo album, titled “Songs From the Front Porch,” an album of sensitive R&B delivered on an acoustic guitar, offering a new platform from which Franti could present his poignant and thought-provoking lyrics. In 2006, Franti united again with Spearhead for “Yell Fire!” which was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, after which several live recordings were made available.

In 2008, Franti joined with legendary producers Sly & Robbie for “All Rebel Rockers,” a record that found influence from Jamaica once again. After a stint supporting John Mayer on his tour, Franti returned to the studio for 2010’s “The Sound of Sunshine,” before waiting three years to release new material, in the shape of “All People.”

Some of the first hip hop I ever discovered when I was a kid was by Michael Franti’s Spearhead. The record was the group’s 1994 debut called Home and it was a fusion of lounge hip hop, soul and spoken word. Franti’s acoustic solo album Songs from the Front Porch was something I played on repeat after he released it in 2003. Whether on his own or with Spearhead (he tends to perform under the moniker ‘Michael Franti & Spearhead), he has continued to make interesting world-laced hip hop and soul music in career than has lasted decades. He has turned his songwriting and vocal skills to almost all genres of music, with his latest releases featuring everything from folk and reggae to rock and dance music – in the ‘80s he event fronted an industrial punk band called The Beatnigs. Sadly I was just a baby, so I never got to see The Beatnigs live. Michael Franti is a towering figure (6 ft 5 in) to witness it the flesh, as I did in London a couple of years ago, but he seems like such a gentle giant. His voice is warm and his tone laidback, even though much of his lyrical content concerns serious social commentary – he is political activist and social justice filmmaker on the side. This particular show was geared more towards his funk party music than the chilled lounge-hop I best love him for, but it was still a fantastic show and his band was seriously good. He is the perfect all-round entertainer.

My husband and I have treated friends to go with us every time we've seen Michael Franti ever since we discovered him about 8 years ago. Why? Because we want to help spread Michael Franti's energy, because it's like the best honey on the freshest bread you could imagine. The man exudes good will in his inspired rhythmic, rockin' reggae way like no other. Through the poetry of his fabulous music, he's an ambassador of Peace (check out his documentary, "I Know I'm Not Alone").

Michael Franti generates such a sense of generosity, connection and playfulness with his endless energy...bouncing all over the venue, on stage, off into the balcony, on the floor... he walks around to mix with the sea of humanity who go to see him, and he makes you want to love everyone and dance. Not to mention how he offers us the chance to be part of his charitable work through the wonderful foundation, "Do it For the Love." But mostly, he plays uplifting songs with a huge heart and bigger smile and his band rounds out that generosity of spirit. So, why see a Franti concert? Do it for the love, for the fun, for the oversized ballon balls that they throw out, for an instant uplift, for the exercise, for peace, for a better world, for a better you, for a good time feeling that stays past the concert.... Why would anyone not go see a Michael Franti concert?

First off, the Jazz Cafe is a lovely venue. I am disabled and have to rely on a cane and the staff immediately asked me upon entering if I would like a chair. They set me up on the right of the stage with other folks who needed seating so that was a great start.

The show itself was awesome. High energy, filled with love and laughter, and the crowd singing along at every opportunity. Michael himself was all over the venue, in the crowd on the floor, up on the balconies, all over the stage, bouncing, jumping and getting the crowd going. Pulling folks on stage to dance and sing with the band, it was awesome. Michael makes a point of inviting human connection throughout the show. Asking the audience to say hello to their neighbors, to hold hands, hug and sing along together. It's truly a magical experience. Something much needed in a world that seems to forget it's magic.

A brilliant evening in London with Michael Franti. First up was his phenomenal film, Stay Human. It's a film that will change you and something every human being should see. After the film was a Q&A with Michael, and even included a couple getting engaged. Beautiful! Michael is such a lovely human being and answered questions and shared stories with the audience. Finally was the acoustic set featuring Michael, and a wonderful musician and singer, Victoria Canal, and of course the super fine bass grooves of Carl Young. Later in the set they were joined by Sonna Rele for 11:59 and she sounded incredible as usual. The crowd was dancing and singing along, linking arms, hugging each other and it was just a fantastic night out. Michael even hung around after to take photos with folks and was generous with the hugs. Highly recommend!!

Great night with Michael Franti and Spearhead at the lovely Bush Hall venue for the Stay Human film. A brilliant film, which you should all see, full of love, hope & inspiration. A Q&A followed, which included a marriage proposal (congrats guys!).

The fab live set after that Michael was joined by the ‘Godfather of Spearhead’ the 1 & only Carl Young on bass & the wonderfully talented singer & keyboard player Victoria Canal, featuring songs from the film & a few other favs.

An absolute inspiration to us all, a live Michael Franti show never disappoints.

Michael's performance was great, as usual. His performances always feel very personal. The crowd was into the show from the beginning. He brought children onto stage to join him. He mingled with the crowd... It was a great time.
