picked this rod up and am quite happy with it... fit and finish was nice and it was as stiff as I hoped for popping and slinging sticks... the travel size should be handy and fit in my carry on.. shipping was also nice and quick

Hsnjo König

Super rod with a tight and fast blank. The 240cm 70/150 gram is perfectly balanced with a roll of around 600 grams. I lifted a 5kg weight to test the rod without any problems. In terms of structure, the Powermesh is similar to the Saltist Travel. I will use the rod for shore jigging and topwater fishing. Due to its length and tight action, the blank is very suitable for fishing with poppers.

Technical questions about this product (3)

Which rod to throw lures 1.5-2oz?

Which rod do you advise for casting poppers and stickbaits in the range 40-60g? This falls within the range of the 9' and 10' (20-60g) models but it is towards the upper end of the range. Will the rod have sufficient power to work these lures? Or am I better off going for the 9' (50-100g) rod? Will this be able to throw the lighter (40g) lures also? Thanks!

Answer of Samuel

I would recommend the fishing rod with casting weight of 20-60 grams because A- the rod is lighter and the action is better/faster to control the jigs B-80% of the poppers are lighter than 40 grams and big enough (over 10 cm ) so they are also attractive for larger fish and you have over a ton of power in the back of the rod to land them (heavy power rod)

Answer of MARCO

I recommend this one because it already has a significant weight if you go higher it would weigh too much. I used it with a 40 gram lure and a 100 gram servant lead in trolling and it works very well.

Ti consiglio questa perche ha già un peso importante se vai più su peserebbe troppo L’ho usata con artificiale da 40 grammi e piombo servitore da 100 in traina e funziona benissimo

Answer of Ben

Hi, I have the 9ft 40 to 60 gram one but haven´t used it yet, However, having played around with it a bit I would say it´s a bit on the soft side and not as stiff as I was expecting. I think 60 gram poppers and sticks would be too much for it, imo it´ll probably be best with 40 gram max.

Answer of Rafael

Good morning, this rod is a cannon, I throw with it both the 24g duo jerk without problem as well as the 50g kaiten 148 and I like it because it is powerful while being smooth...

Buenos días , esta caña es un cañón lanzo con ella tanto jerk de 24g duo sin problema como también el kaiten 148 de 50g y me gusta por que es potente a la vez que es suave...

Answer of dustin

yeah you could put a 4000 BG on it ... it feel a little unbalanced... if you could size up that would match a bit better... I went with a 8000 Saragossa and it feels great!

Powerful Travel Rods Advice Needed Monster S.T.C, Powermesh etc.

  • Add to quote

I'm planning a trip to Costa Rica next year with the other half and although in her eyes this is definitely not a fishing trip I'm looking for something portable and powerful to grab whatever opportunities I can to take advantage of the shore fishing. I can't see any threads discussing this with the last few years so wondering if new technology has improved on those suggested in the past. Does anyone have experience of the Shimano S.T.C Monster spin (3.15m, 28-110g)? It gives the 10ft length that most seem to suggest as minimum and casts up to 3 1/2 oz but Shimano never seem to give figures for line rating so hard to gauge how strong it will be. How does it compare to the older Yasei model which seems similar in specification? The Daiwa Powermesh Game Travel 274XH casts 50-100g and supposedly rated to 30lb line which would suit my needs but falls a bit shorter in length and apparently distance is the more important factor when targeting the roosters from the shore so I'm not sure. I'm not sure what distance I could cast a 3 oz wedge with a 9ft but I know my out of the 7, 8 and 9ft rods I have in similar casting ranges the 9ft certainly wins on distance... Shimano also do the S.T.C Powergame Twin Tip (3m, 1-4oz, 2.4m, 5-10oz) which would looks like it could be a really useful rod but again no line rating so will it explode in my hands if I put 10lbs of drag on a running roosterfish. Be great if anyone has pointers. It'll probably all be moot point when I never even get a take but it's not the type of holiday I can usually afford so need to make the most of it. If I knew the shimanos had say a 20 or 30lb line rating then I'd snap them up but can't find the info (web, youtube, forums etc.) and I can't find a contact number to ask them direct! Are first posts allowed to be this long BTW?? Can you tell it's stressing me out...

Thanks for the suggestion. If I was planning to do bait fishing and ledgering then I think it'd be perfect. As I'm likely to be stealing short sessions then I'm going to focus on lures I'm looking for something that has optimum casting around 2 - 3 oz that I can handle repeated casting for a couple of hours.

daiwa powermesh game travel

I took the Shimano STC BX 20-50g 10ft. Good rod for lures and light bait. At the time suggestions were the 60-120g heavier version - this coped with night time rays etc, in Madeira, a bit like an estuary rod.

So you found the STC rod held up ok? Would you say the rays were well within its capabilities or the upper range of what it would handle? Can't find the STC BX but you've given me a better idea of how the STC rods cope. I'm still considering the STC Monster but decided against the other two as from some sites that stock all three only the Monster is listed under rods for "exotics". The the other two are XT60 carbon whereas the Monster is HPC. Assuming the high pressure carbon blank gives an increase in strength. I think moving expectations down to about 9ft opens up more options for me. To keep it budget the Daiwa Powermesh Game Travel will get me a 9ft 50-100g rod rated to 30lbs for under a £100 but exploring the French online shops has opened my eyes to a whole new world of travel rods but they don't come cheap! The hole in my wallet may have to double in size... My 9ft 20-50g Forcemaster AX will throw a 1oz Dexter Wedge a good distance but not 100yrds. Throwing 3oz on an 100g rod should get me there though I guess...

daiwa powermesh game travel

I've just sold a 9ft sonik magna 50-100g rod, better build quality and fittings that the shimano STC IMO. I used it a couple of times with 30lb spider wire smooth stealth braid. Pecheur.com would probably be the best place to browse a large selection of rods.

They do a 10ft version but not with a heavy rating.

Yeah Pecheur has a good selection and prices. They also have 10% off £70+ and 15% off £120+ until the 20th too so might have to take advantage of the that. The problem now though is I have found the Des Poissons Si Grands website which has an incredible selection but mostly with prices that make me weak at the knees... One day I'll have a good job and a Tenryu rod haha. They seem to have teamed up with Daiwa to produce some interesting rods that are a bit out of my price range sadly. The DPSG website does comment that the STC is best suited to "lighter exotics" which although that's probably what I can hope for I would like to stand a chance if I managed to hook something special. You think the Sonik is a stronger rod? What sort of casting range were you managing with the 50-100g?

Yeah well that's it. I've already got a lovely 7ft 4 piece 7-28g rod that does nearly everything I usually need but on this trip I really want a chance to get onto the roosterfish. That's why I'm quite specific on requirements, all I need it for is long casts and the strength to handle such a hard fighting fish. Think now I'm trying to decide between a Daiwa Powermesh Game 9ft 50-100g 30lb rated rod for £100 or one a member of here is selling secondhand, a Daiwa Global Tournament 9ft 2in for £200. The powermesh game are new and lower budget whereas the global tournament discontinued but was highly regarded and definitely a far more premium rod. There's also an interesting 8ft 60-150g 5 piece rated to 50lb braid for £200 which has a nice lure rating but think it's dropping down in length too much for my needs.

I’m no expert but here are my thoughts. Not sure where you are going in CR, ie which side, but I was on the Pacific side and had no joy shore fishing and had been told it was poor prior to going! I did have some Roosters, but that was from a charter. I’m going through a similar dilemma as you. If you want something that will fit diagonally inside a hold case then you are looking at a four piece rod if it is over 7’6”. For throwing lures from the shore 9’ is the minimum length really to give you the distance you might need to get past the surf. There are very few 4/5 piece 9’+ rods on the market, I’m still looking! If I was in your shoes I’d just buy the Monster STC in 11ft version which is a 5 piece, take a selection of small tropical lures from 40-80g and match the rod with a 5000/6000 Saragossa SW and 30lb braid. Job done.

I've decided to go with a 9' 50-100g Daiwa Powermesh travel game for £100 off Pecheur. Price doesn't give much confidence but it's rated to 30lb line supposedly and they are a pretty new range so might compared to the quality of other more expensive travel rods as most have been around a while. Did look at the Daiwa Ardito and Okuma Nomad. Both are line rated where as the STC Monster isn't and i imagine there's a reason for that. Still got a while so if the power mesh isnt great I'll go for a more expensive option. Fingers crossed.

check also with flights as most now need an airportable rod! shorter sections than older types!

Hi Dubsmon, I think that’s a really good choice, at least on paper. Just be careful if you use it on a boat, it’s even easier to high stick with a longer rod and with a big fish right under you the rod will be under a lot more strain than on the same size fish from the shore. Good luck and please update us.

Finally arrived. Thanks to yodels live tracking I was able to nip back on my break and avoid missing it! Its quite light so might have to rethink what reel to put it with. Was planning on getting a Penn Slammer 6500 high speed but I'll try it with a similar weight reel before I buy because it might be a bit unbalanced... Doesn't feel anywhere near the quality of the Sakura Trinis travel rod I already have but it was a lot cheaper so to be expected. I'll find some time to get it tested and report back on how it performs.

Bit of an update if anyone is interested. I've had time to do a bit of testing now and I'm quite impressed with the rod. The model I got was the Daiwa Powermesh Game Travel 2.7m, 4 piece, 50-100g, 30lb (PMG274XHAF). Note this is the new for 2019 Powermesh Game Travel not the older Powermesh Travel which I don't believe came with line ratings. Maybe a silly test to do but I tied it to a 2.5kg weight and lifted it off the ground. The rod survived and didn't feel completely locked up. There wasn't any creaking and reel stayed firmly seated so still felt comfortable the hand. The rod curves through all the spigots really well. I wouldn't say there were no flat spots across the spigots but this was barely perceptible so if anyone was worried about a 'travel rod feel' with this rod then I think they'd be pleasantly surprised. Casting the rod handled well too. I gave it a quick test at a lake I know is 100m wide as I was nearby. I used a stradic ci4+ 4000 with 26lb j-braid and although I couldn't use great technique due to it being a tight swim with lots of branches to avoid behind and above I was able to hit 90m consistently with 2.5 and 3 oz leads. With room to cast properly I have no doubt I could clear the entire lake. I didn't feel there was much benefit in distance with the 3 oz over the 2.5 oz so would say this was the sweet spot when not casting into wind. Over the last weekend I tested it with feathering for mackerel in Llandudno and it performed really well. I used a daiwa ninja 2500 with 40lb j-braid straight through and on an almost flat day was close to emptying the spool on every cast with with a 3 oz lead. I think there was probably just under 150m of line on the spool with maybe 1/5 of the line remaining after a full power cast. I didn't have any 2 oz leads with me so couldn't test it with them. The rod loaded up really nicely and I could feel it building up its curve smoothly and blasting straight through on the stroke. Recovery was excellent and for me the dimensions of the handle and butt were spot on. Sink and draw with the 3 oz lead did tire the arm after a while and although the moderate to through action was great for casting it would have been better to have a faster action for this application. It was fine for the job though and would have been perfect if I hadn't forgotten my 2 oz leads. The rod remained comfortable to use for the hour of constant cast and retrieve and handled strings of 3 average size mackerel with ease while still giving some sport when they were hooked. I did try a bit of ledgering running rigs with 2oz ball leads for a short time until rain called a halt to the day and I think for light mobile work this would be an excellent choice if length wasn't a concern. With the 40lb braid it was very sensitive. I could feel the lead bounding off individual pebbles on the shingle beach and could react to larger waves to avoid the weigh being pulled out of position. This was on a day with a strong onshore wind and quite a bit of chop. A day for heavier leads to be honest and with no takers I didn't give it long. I'm really impressed with the rod, being at the lower end of the price range for quality 4 piece travel rods. I think the casting ratings are about right. I wouldn't power cast with higher than the rating but I would trust it for shorter chucks. I think you would be fine using a 10 oz lead off the side of a boat with a string of six as long as you were carefully when lifting out of the water. I think a 2 piece of the same size, rating and price would out cast it but I don't think there would be a noticeable difference on the retrieve or playing a fish. I think that if you are in the same position as me and wanted a powerful travel rod you can trust but doesn't break the bank and is still enjoyable to use you are unlikely to get better than Daiwa Powermesh travel rods.

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.

So, have you decided when to go to Moscow? 🙂 Do you plan to visit Moscow in spring, summer, autumn or winter?

Travel idea! As in all cases you will get a visa and there is only 4 hours by train between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, why not visit both cities? Read an example of a route here: Moscow to Saint Petersburg in one week.
