boat trips in southampton

As I embarked on my first of many memorable boat trips in Southampton , gazing out over the sparkling blue waters of Southampton Water, I couldn’t believe the amazing views and fun experiences this port city offers. From private charters and popular destinations like the Isle of Wight to day cruises and luxury options, boat trips here make for a great way to explore the wider area.

Whether you’re a complete beginner like me or a seasoned sailor, cruising Southampton Water and beyond will create wonderful memories. As a central hub for boating, this charming port city lives up to its maritime heritage. In this article, I’ll share my impressions and tips from my boat adventures in and around Southampton. Be sure to pack motion sickness tablets and layers in case the weather shifts during your day trip or return trip.

Private Charters: Enjoy Exclusivity on the Solent

There are several private yacht charter companies based in Southampton offering a wide range of vessels and experiences for  adult guests  seeking exclusivity and customization. Here are some top private charter options in the area:

Seaseeker Charters provides a unique yacht hiring experience based in Southampton. Prices vary based on the specific charter, so I recommend reaching out to them directly for pricing details.

Firstaway Yacht Charters offers bareboat and skippered charters perfect for that special occasion. Prices for 7 days start from around £887. They have over 15 years of experience in yachting from Southampton Water and the Solent.

Hamble River Boat Charter has a fleet of Princess and Sunseeker yachts to charter along Southampton Water and the Beaulieu River. Prices range from £50 to £2500 depending on the boat and duration.

To find the perfect private yacht for your Southampton Water excursion, I recommend reaching out to multiple companies for pricing and package details. With the right charter, you’re sure to have an exclusive and memorable experience along this stunning stretch of coastline.

Popular Destinations: Island Hopping & River Cruising

Southampton’s prime location makes it a perfect place for exploring the surrounding waterways. Popular boat trip destinations include Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the scenic River Hamble.

The  Isle of Wight  is a favorite island getaway accessible by ferry or private boat from Southampton. It’s known for its dramatic white cliffs, sandy beaches, historic attractions, and walking trails which provide many authentic experiences. Must-see destinations include Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle , and The Needles.

Many boat tours also cruise up the  Beaulieu River  to the picturesque village of Buckler’s Hard. This 18th century shipbuilding village offers maritime history along with charming pubs and shops. You can also tour the Montagu Motor Museum and Palace House set within the glorious Beaulieu Estate.

For those seeking a quicker getaway, the  Hamble River offers beautiful scenery dotted with villages and yachting marinas. Stop at a waterside pub for lunch or stroll the coastal nature trails. You may even spot wildlife like herons, kingfishers, and Brent geese along the mudflats and salt marshes.

With stunning destinations and attractions, a boat trip from Southampton introduces you to the very best of the region’s coastal culture and scenery. Each river and island has its own unique story and charm waiting to be explored.

Boat Tours & Day Cruises: Relaxing & Easygoing

If you prefer to leave the sailing to the experts, Southampton offers a variety of sightseeing boat tours and day cruises. These organized excursions require little planning and make for a relaxed, easygoing adventure.

Blue Funnel Cruises operates sightseeing trips showcasing Southampton’s maritime heritage. Popular options include lunch, dinner, and sunset cruise tours ranging from 2-8 hours in length. These cruises include live music, dancing, and dining options with prices starting around £35 per person. Tours generally last 1-4 hours with commentary provided on sights along the way.

In addition, companies like  Magical Cruise Company and  Solent Cruises offer lunch, dinner, and party cruises ranging from 2-8 hours in length. These sunset and moonlight cruises include live music, dancing, and meals with prices starting around £35 per person.

More active cruise options are also available like the RIB Jet Boat Tours offering speedboat adventures and “ocean blasts.” These high-octane rides zip passengers across the water at speeds over 30 knots for a thrilling coastal tour.

With such a wide variety of boating excursions available, visitors can easily find a tour matching their activity level and interests. Demonstrations of local boatbuilding techniques, intriguing historical sights, bistro-style dining, and high-speed adventures await aboard Southampton’s many boat tours and day cruises.

Experiences & Impressions: Adventure and Amusement

During my boat trips in and around Southampton, I was amazed by the variety of entertaining experiences and impressive sights. Whether learning about maritime history or speeding through the solent waves, there are so many great ways to spend time on the water here.

On a RIB jet boat tour, we had an absolute blast zipping past landmarks like the iconic Spinnaker Tower. The friendly guide kept us laughing with amusing stories and tidbits in between thrilling ocean blasts reaching speeds over 30 knots! It was a rush of adrenaline and excitement spotting container ships and sailboats along the bustling working port.

In contrast, a classic afternoon cream tea cruise had a much more relaxed, leisurely pace. We felt like VIPs cruising along Southampton Water and catching glimpses of riverside villages as we savored delicate finger sandwiches and scones. The live jazz quartet really added to the genteel, pampered vibe.

From high-energy adventures to blissfully tranquil trips, I found boat tours in Southampton strike a wonderful balance between entertainment and education. The stories of this historic port always come to life when experienced firsthand from the water. Whether setting sail with mates or donning your captain’s hat, there are so many amazing ways to have a great time boating here.

For the Complete Beginner: Hassle-Free Boating

As a first-time boater exploring Southampton by water, I discovered many options perfect for beginners. From guided tours to easy-to-operate boat rentals, hitting the waters here couldn’t be more hassle-free.

For those who want to helm their own vessel but have zero experience, companies like  Borrow a Boat  offer simple electric crafts. After a basic safety tutorial, we were soon motoring along the calm Hamble River taking in gorgeous waterfront homes and yachts. With speeds under 4 mph, these “day boats” let beginners relax and gain confidence before trying faster powerboats.

If you prefer leaving navigation to the pros, hop aboard boats like the Jubilee River Boat for fully narrated sightseeing. Knowledgeable guides like Captain Bob will pilot you past key landmarks while interspersing fascinating historical tales and personal anecdotes. During my 1.5 hour tour to Northam and back, I learned so much about Southampton’s trading legacy!

While coming back from any boat trip takes effort by water taxi or public transport, companies like  Solent Boat Tours offer  hassle-free return shuttle services . This allowed my group to simply enjoy the outward cruise while our guide arranged our trip back to the city center.

With such simplified boating options, Southampton makes an ideal destination for introductory maritime adventures. By minimizing logistics, first-timers can best immerse themselves in the joy of the open water.

Luxury Cruising: First-Class Indulgence

For those seeking a truly indulgent boating experience with maximum comforts, luxury cruises deliver first-class treatment in Southampton. Top operators like  Silversea Cruises  offer divine accommodation and cuisine sure to impress.

Silversea’s  Oceanview Suites  aboard the Silver Moon boutique cruise ship pamper guests with spacious interiors, Italian marble bathrooms, and 24-hour  butler service . While plying the English Channel, passengers can indulge in specialty dining, spa treatments, or evening entertainment in luxurious venues.

In addition, companies like   Sunseeker Charters  offer elite private yacht charters departing from Southampton. Groups of up to 12 guests can charter vessels equipped with lavish furnishings like al fresco hot tubs, professional galleys, and sophisticated media systems. For the ultimate vacation, crew members including chefs and stewards cater to your every desire.

For those seeking to cruise the Solent in style, Southampton offers first-rate luxury options on both private yachts and intimate cruise ships. With refined decor, gourmet cuisine, and polished service, you’ll feel like royalty when experiencing Southampton from these lavish floating hotels!

Local Cuisine: Fresh Seafood & Riverside Fare

No boating excursion is complete without savoring the flavors of Southampton and its surroundings. Luckily, many boat tour companies dock at villages and harbors boasting top-notch eateries specializing in fresh local fare.

Seafood naturally dominates menus across Southampton given the daily bounty pulled from the Solent’s productive fisheries. Ruby-red Southampton prawns, buttery Dover sole, and firm-fleshed sea bass arrive daily to restaurants like The Jetty and Berries at the Marina. Their skillfully prepared, simply presented dishes let the pristine ingredients shine.

Boat trips also provide opportunities to sample choice eats at destination ports like Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. Waterside pubs like The George Hotel have earned acclaim for their just-caught crab and lobster, best washed down with a pint of frothy Island ale.

River cruise goers shouldn’t miss dining in Buckler’s Hard on the Beaulieu River. The Master Builder’s House Hotel sets the gold standard with creative cuisine conjured from New Forest ingredients. Dishes like venison carpaccio and fruit-infused sorbets tantalize tastebuds with local flavor.

With quick access to both fresh catches and countryside delicacies, Southampton is a hub for outstanding cuisine. Sailing here lets diners discover mouthwatering regional specialties from land and sea.

Set Sail from Southampton: Gateway to Adventure

As my journey through Southampton’s waterways comes to a close, I’m already longing to return. This storied port continues to serve as the perfect base for nautical adventures and relaxing cruises. From a first-timer’s perspective, the variety of boat trips offer accessible options for all interests and budgets.

Whether an afternoon’s sail to seaside villages, a high-speed thrill ride, or a week of 5-star luxury cruising – Southampton truly has it all. Yet despite the diversity of boating experiences here, they share a common highlight: stunning solent scenery. Gazing at this dynamic seascape never grows old.

So next time you’re exploring southern England, be sure to consider the call of the ocean and arrange your own boat trip from Southampton. Together, this historic port and its lifeblood waters comprise a magical maritime playground eager to welcome newcomers and sea dogs alike!

day boat trips southampton

If you plan to sail in the UK, Southampton is the place to go. With the port of Southampton being the best harbour in the UK, and a gateway between the rest of the world and Britain, it is no wonder that sailors love the city of Southampton so much, with the Southampton International Boat Show being an annual event held there which brings in visitors from all over the world. If you plan on having a day out on the water from Southampton, one of the best day boat trips is to visit the nearby island of the Isle of Wight, and we have put together the perfect route below.

day boat trips southampton

Port of Southampton —> East Cowes Marina

11nm – 1 hour 50 minutes.

day boat trips southampton

When you are sailing from Southampton to the Isle of Wight, the first decision you must make is whether you will dock at Cowes and head anti-clockwise around the west of the island, or dock at East Cowes and head clockwise around the island. We recommend stopping at East Cowes, as the east side of the island holds some of the island’s better ports to dock in, and the cities on the east have some of the better attractions. In East Cowes, you will find the famous Osbourne House, which used to be a summer home for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and is now an open area to the public, along with the private beach and bathing machine. For boat enthusiasts, there is also a small boat museum near the East Cowes Marina that you can visit.

East Cowes Marina —> Island Habour Marina

1.7nm – 20 minutes.

day boat trips southampton

When visiting the Isle of Wight, you must visit the capital of Newport, which is situated in the middle of the island. Despite not being on the coast, Newport actually has a nearby marina, the Island Harbour Marina, which you can dock at when you sail along the beautiful River Medina. In Newport, there is a range of activities to enjoy, including sanctuaries to visit for the animal lovers in your group, from the Monkey Haven to Butterfly World. The most famous attraction in the area is Carisbrooke Castle, which is where Charles the first was imprisoned before his trial, and where you will now find a museum and gardens which you can tour.

Island Harbour Marina —> Ryde Marina

4.9nm – 1 hour.

day boat trips southampton

After visiting Newport, travel back up to East Cowes, and head clockwise around the island where you can dock at the town of Ryde. Here, you will find many attractions, including the Steam Railway, which is a little further out, where you can see train exhibits and enjoy a ride on an authentic steam-powered locomotive. As well as this, for the history buffs, Quarr Abbey is a fully functioning monastery complete with a pig sty where you can feed the monk’s pigs, a tea shop, and a learning centre, where you can leave the monks a message. For adventure lovers, Ryde has multiple attractions to enjoy including go-karting, tree climbing and escape rooms, and after enjoying a walk along the beach and a drink in one of the seaside cafes.

Ryde Marina —> Bembridge Harbour

3.1nm – 31 minutes.

day boat trips southampton

A small distance from Ryde is the harbour of Bembridge. Here you will find Bembridge Beach which you can visit during the summer, as well as some classic English seaside restaurants, cafes, and pubs, including the famous fish and chip shops. Bembridge is also a popular village to go fishing or crabbing on Bembridge beach or Bembridge ledge, with crabbing being a very popular activity among English people in seaside resorts, and Bembridge is a popular place for this due to the rock pools and long coastlines of the beaches. Bembridge is one of the most beautiful places in the Isle of Wight with panoramic views of the Bembridge Lifeboat station, and the white cliffs of Culver Down.

Other Attractions

In the South of the Island, there are a lot of other popular attractions to explore, however, there are not many places to moor so to visit these places we recommend you travel by bus, train, or car. If you want to relax, there is Ventnor Beach to explore, as well as Ventnor Park and Putting Green, golf is a very popular activity on the island, with multiple golf courses scattered on all corners of the island. Visit the donkey sanctuary, or the dairy farm in the south, to learn more about the local animals and farm life. Another unique activity is the Model Village in Godshill, which is a recreation of the fifties in the towns of Godshill and Shanklin Old Village and Chine on the Isle of Wight, and a popular destination for anyone who comes.

Bembridge Habour —> Port of Southampton

17nm – 2 hours 49 minutes.

day boat trips southampton

Return to Southampton the way you came, as travelling fully around the island will take around 7-10 hours for a professional sailor which will take up most of your day. Travelling down the Solent is an easy passage which should make this a nice journey back.

While the Isle of Wight is a great place to sail from Southampton , Southampton’s location on the coast means there are a ton of great day trips to be discovered, including sailing to Brighton, Guernsey and Hythe,

Solent Sailing

The Solent is a fantastic place to sail.  One could say the Solent stretches from Portsmouth and the forts just south of Portsmouth to the start of the Needles Channel.  Within this area there are numerous places to pull into port and explore, each with something different to offer.  Two big ports, charming market towns, the bustling Hamble River, the beautiful Bucklers Hard up the Beaulieu River in the heart of the New Forest, anchorages positioned to let you watch the world go by.  They are all within a stone's throw (short sail) of each other meaning you can visit several South Coast locations during your charter, making it popular for a day, a yacht weekend or a week. Due to the popularity of sailing on the Solent, many people are searching online for terms such as yacht hire Solent , yacht rental Solent , boat hire Solent , boat rental Solent , and, if you're local, yacht charter near me . There is also a huge variety of craft in the Solent.  It is not uncommon to see high performance racing yachts in Cowes, oil tankers, fishing boats, day boats, sailing school boats, round the world luxury cruising yachts, round the world racing yachts, old gaffers, classic keel boats, kite surfers, windsurfers, big expensive power boats, smaller expensive power boats, sailing dinghies in Gosport, ribs of all shapes and sizes, cruise ships, a hoover craft and high speed ferries.  All within a day.  Yet the Solent does still offer peaceful hideaways to get away from it all. There are few real physical obstructions to boats within the Solent.  There is the odd ledge There is the Bramble Bank just to the north and east of Cowes but that is about it.  There is a shipping channel one must be aware off and local bylaws that one needs to adhere to. Solent tides are interesting, and it is necessary to have a good awareness of what the tide is doing at all times.  Due to the shape of the land and the Isle of Wight the Solent gets 'double highs'. Just beyond the Solent on the South coast there is Poole and Weymouth to the west, Bembridge, Langstone and Chichester Harbours to the East.

Yacht Charter Southampton

One of the major yachting centres of the South Coast, Southampton is a large harbour city with an important yacht racing pedigree. Home of the famous Whitbread round the world yacht race and now the Clipper round the world yacht race, though around nine miles from the Solent it is still seen as one of the centres of UK sailing.

With the bars and restaurants of Ocean Village close to the two main sailing marinas, as well as excellent train and road links to London and its airports, a Solent yacht charter out of Southampton could well be a good choice.

On a motor yacht charter or a sailing yacht charter you won't be disappointed with the great hotels, nightlife and shopping around what is still one of the UK's most important deep water ports. The start of RMS Titanic's fateful voyage (her quay now where Ocean Village is), Southampton is still home to major cruise liners such as the fleets of Cunard and P&O. Just beware that these vessels take priority over sail thanks to the channel being relatively small for them.

Explore Southampton By Renting A Yacht

Centre of the Solent sailing paradise on the UK South Coast, a Southampton yacht rental could well be the start of a week or two afloat to remember. Whether on a skippered yacht charter or bareboat charter the world is your oyster!

The city itself has a cosmopolitan vibe yet in just five minutes heading up Southampton Water you can be under full sail or power and heading out past the Hamble River and out to the world yacht racing Mecca of the Solent or bound for the beautiful backwaters that surround it with their important coastal ecology and birdlife.

Cowes Week comes around every August where it is said you can walk to the Isle of Wight just treading on boats as you go. Nearby is the historic Royal Navy town of Portsmouth Harbour and to the west, the beautiful Lymington and the Beaulieu River sailing centres.

How To Get To Southampton

Southampton is accessible by good air, road and rail links.

Southampton Central railway station is a short taxi ride from Ocean Village and Shamrock Quay marinas, and is just 90 minutes from London Waterloo railway station.

The town is on the Southern end of the M3 motorway to London, and is the mid-point of the M27 that links the New Forest and South West to Portsmouth and West Sussex.

There are also air links to Europe and the rest of the UK via Southampton Airport.

Marinas In Southampton

There are two major marinas in Southampton - Ocean Village and Shamrock Quay in nearby Northam. From there you can bareboat charter or skippered charter a motor yacht or sailing yacht out to the Solent and South Coast ports beyond.

Ocean Village Marina:

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 90m (295 Feet)

Max Draught 15m (49 Feet)

List additional services: Shore power, water, laundry, WiFi, dentist, restaurants and bars, supermarket (nearby), cinema, boatyard, boat hoist, chandlery. Fuel is available at Port Hamble Marina or Hythe.

Shamrock Quay Marina:

Max Length 70m (229 Feet)

List additional services: Shore power, water, laundry, WiFi, restaurants, shops and bars, boatyard, boat hoist, chandlery. Fuel is available at nearby Port Hamble or Hythe.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Southampton

On a seven or 14 day yacht charter you can enjoy the best of the Solent, mixing some of the best yachting towns in the UK with quiet evenings at the mooring buoy watching the world go by.

Southampton and the Solent - 7 days: Over seven days you don't need to travel very far to enjoy the best sailing conditions and the Solent's fabled double-high tide that makes it such a great place for a bareboat or skippered yacht charter. You can head off to Portsmouth Harbour after a day afloat and enjoy the nightlife and then a quiet following evening in the scenic Chichester Harbour nearby. Turning west, find a mooring in East Cowes and pay a visit to one of the many sailing pubs. Take in Lymington after another day of fun on the water and another quiet evening on the Beaulieu River before returning, perhaps with a night in Port Hamble or Warsash on the way back.

14 days - Solent and South Coast: Over 14 days you would be highly dependent on the prevailing winds. In the summer these often come from the east so you could head out via Portsmouth Harbour and its attractions to Chichester, then on to the famous party town of Brighton (known locally as 'London on Sea' for its links to the capital and cosmopolitan boho vibe). If the Azores High is still overhead you can do a dead run back down the coast and visit the Isle of Wight. The fun holiday towns of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are to the west, and remembering the 12 mile military firing range exclusion zone to the west of that, explore the quirky Isle of Portland and seaside town of Weymouth before returning to the real world on the Solent.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Southampton

The sailing season runs from late March to mid September on the UK South Coast, though you will see hardier types afloat throughout the year. There can be gales at any time of year, with Westerlies especially fierce through the Solent. In the peak boat rental season of July and August it can still be fun sailing, though the bars and marinas can be expensive and full.

Cowes Week? You will need to book well in advance, both marinas and mooring buoy moorings as well as restaurants and pubs! A motor boat with a well stocked fridge can be a good way to make new friends during this event too...

Sailing Weather In Southampton

April and May: Westerlies prevail but you will often find warm days with brisk sailing conditions of a F4-5. Gales will come through earlier in the year, funnelling through the Solent and hitting F10-12 in gusts. This is Britain - expect rain!

June-August: In June there will be southerly and westerly gales at times but these tend to die out in July and August with the Azores High moving north and providing settled conditions and light easterlies. Expect temperatures in the high 20s C range with the odd few days at 30C plus. As ever, keep your oilies to hand as even in the height of summer things can change.

September-October: Grey skies and gales start to return. While often in the high teens Celsius in September with some great sailing conditions, the westerly procession of lows start coming up the English Channel and things can get a little uncomfortable by early October.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Ocean Village is the main marina in the centre of the city, with Shamrock Quay just to the north of the centre in Northam on the River Itchen.

May to August is best for sailing, though the first week of August is Cowes Week and launches the peak sailing season locally where it can be difficult to get a berth or table at a restaurant! If on a private charter you should benefit from a berth and access to the MDL Marina chain of yacht harbours and moorings.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.
