Steeped in history, it is believed that the site was first developed before the arrival of the Incas in the 1100’s and then later expanded and fortified during the Inca Empire.

The UNESCO-listed treasure is perched high on a hilltop, providing great views over the surroundings.

3. Huchuy Qosqo

Spend a day hiking to the well-preserved Huchuy Qosqo (Little Cusco) to enjoy historic sites, nature, views, and interactions with locals.

5. Humantay Lake

Formed when glaciers melted many centuries ago, the sparkling, calm, turquoise waters reflect the surrounding snow-capped mountaintops like a mirror.

There’s a Catholic church – El Templo Mayor San Francisco de Asis – a local market, and a handful of eateries where you can savor traditional Peruvian cuisine.

The town’s real gem, however, are the stunning salt pools.

Arranged in geometric formations that are terraced down the slopes of a yawning canyon, a stream flows through the shallow pools, evaporating to leave salty deposits behind that sparkle in the sunshine.

The area provided Incans with salt, and still provides locals with the mineral today; harvesting processes are almost exactly the same as they were in times gone by, and you may see local families scraping the ground to gather the salt for sale.

12. Moray Archaeological Site

Situated close to Maras, the archaeological site of Moray sits on a soaring plateau above the town.

The ruins here are rather unlike those found elsewhere in the area, with circular-shaped indentations on the terraces.

Some holes are very deep, reaching down into the earth for up to almost 100 feet.

A mystery remains as to why these holes were created and several theories have been put forward.

The site has irrigation channels and – although the people of today are often baffled by the unique site – it was clearly important for the Incans.

Of course, Machu Picchu is – for many travelers – its own day trip from Cusco. We won’t be covering Machu Picchu in this article, but rather focusing on the other popular Cusco day trips to consider before (or after) you visit Machu Picchu.

If your itinerary allows for it, don’t make the mistake of making Machu Picchu among your only day trips from Cusco – there is so much more here to see and do. Day Trips from Cusco

A day trip to Pisac is one of the easiest day trips from Cusco. Pisac is just 45 minutes north of Cusco, making it also one of the most popular. Home to some of the most spectacular Incan ruins in the Sacred Valley and one of the best markets in Latin America , Pisac is an easy choice for Cusco day trips for visitors.

You can easily get from Cusco to Pisac without booking a tour – meaning this is also a great day trip for travelers on a budget.

Take a small passenger van called a “colectivo” that departs regularly from Calle Puputi in the historic center of Cusco or take a taxi. The colectivo will cost just a few bucks, while the taxi will cost about $20 (in soles).

Plan to visit Pisac on Sunday, if you can, to take advantage of being in town for the market day! The Pisac Market is a long-standing tradition, bringing local vendors from the area to town to sell everything from live animals to fresh fruit and vegetables to souvenirs and textiles.

While the market is open daily, on Sunday, the entire town seems to be overtaken by stalls spilling into the streets – it’s great fun and fantastic people-watching (and shopping, too)! Of course, no trip to Pisac is complete without exploring the ruins.

Make sure to budget a good 3-4 hours at least to explore the entire site; there are several different sections you’ll want to see , and the site requires a lot of walking, which can be taxing when you still haven’t fully adjusted to the altitude.

Make sure to explore the impressive agricultural terracing and the different “neighborhoods” of the ruins. You’ll also find nearly 20 different watchtowers – unique to Pisac! – as well as the largest Incan cemetery ever discovered. It’s estimated to have held up to 10,000 bodies! What’s more, Ollantaytambo is also an incredibly quaint and charming little town, with good restaurants and even some great shopping, making for the perfect combination of activities for a stellar Cusco day trip.

Ollantaytambo is easily reached by taxi from Cusco or by local bus – buses depart from the historic center of Cusco frequently and cost just a few dollars. The ride takes around an hour and a half, no matter how you travel.

The main attraction of Ollantaytambo is the impressive ruins on the hillsides around the city. Though the city was built on top of Incan ruins as well, and still maintains much of the original layout from centuries ago.

Some of the most impressive ruins include the “Baño de la Nusta” fountain, as well as the jaw-dropping Sun Temple, composed of massive multi-ton monoliths. You’ll want to dedicate at least 2-3 hours to exploring the ruins.

As the start of the train system that takes visitors the rest of the way to Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo is bustling – as much as a small town can be bustling – and has a lot to offer tourists. You’ll find artisan shops, like the Awamaki fairtrade shop where local weaving cooperatives sell their wares, and plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants.

Ollantaytambo is a favorite destination among Cusco day trips organized by local tour guides – many combine visits to Ollantaytambo and Pisca in one of their easy day trips from Cusco. This is by far the easiest way to enjoy day trips from Cusco – we recommend this small-group excursion from Cusco if you’re on a tight itinerary!

3. Rainbow Mountain

You’ve surely seen it before – the Rainbow Mountain – whether it be on Instagram, some viral photo, or just on promotional material for travel to Peru. This stunning mountain is truly a rainbow, with distinct stripes of color left by mineral deposits over time. It looks surreal. 

Also known as the Montaña de Los Siete Colores or Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain has only recently become such a world-famous attraction – it was covered year-round in snow and ice until about 2013, when rising temperatures revealed it.  It’s one of the newest day trips from Cusco but easily among the most popular.

Rainbow Mountain is now a major tourist attraction in Peru and one of the most popular Cusco day trips other than Machu Picchu.  Day trips with a guide to Rainbow Mountain  are essential unless you have your own form of transportation in Peru.

A day trip to Rainbow Mountain is admittedly a long one – tour operators pick up guests between 3:00 – 4:00 AM from hotels and hostels in the Cusco historic center, and then embark on a 3 hours drive to the mountain. Once there, you’ll need to trek for about 1.5 -2 hours to reach the lookout over the mountain.

The views, even before you reach the mountain, are gorgeous. It’s a remote, windswept area, so you’ll want to ensure you’re appropriately dressed for the hike – bundle up year-round!

While not too demanding of a hike physically, it might be best to leave this trip for after you’ve become more acclimated to the altitude here – even just a day or two in Cusco will help significantly.

It’s best to save a trip to Rainbow Mountain for the dry season – snow and rain can make these trips impossible – or steal that classic view of the rainbow-streaked mountain. 

4. Moray and Maras

Located between Cusco and Ollantaytambo, the two unique destinations of Moray and Maras are some of the most visually stunning and unique spots you’ll find in the Sacred Valley . Located just 15 minutes away from each other , these two destinations make one of the most popular Cusco day trips.

While you can visit these sites in addition to others in the Sacred Valley as part of a more extensive  Sacred Valley tour , these spots can be seen in an unhurried way, making for great day trips from Cusco.

The easiest way to visit is by booking a  Moray and Maras day trip from Cusco .  Small group day trips  are quite inexpensive and can include visits to Chinchero or Pisac as well. 

Moray is the site of some unique Incan terracing you won’t find anywhere else. With their distinct round shape, these terraces look otherworldly, and with their high walls and multiple levels, these circle terraces descend almost 500 feet (150 meters) directly into the earth.

While more study remains to be done about these terraces, archeologists know that the Incas used them for farming and that the depressions created a significant temperature difference on each level. Plus, they’ve determined that unique soil compositions were transported here and added to each terrace for special planting purposes.

Maras is home to the Maras Salt Mines , some of the world’s largest salt mines, used since pre-Inca times. Saltwater is released from a natural underground spring and fed through salt pools to extract the salt naturally from the water.

The ingenuity of the pre-Incan civilizations in cultivating this natural resource is clear! The different salt pools create a white waterfall effect on the hillside for an incredible and unforgettable view of the valley. Its one of the most unique day trips from Cusco, that’s for sure!

5. Urubamba

The largest town in the Sacred Valley, Urubamba is a great destination for a mix of activities to enjoy during a Cusco day trip.

Often added to a larger  Sacred Valley day trip , Urubamba offers the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful town with shops, restaurants, abundant natural beauty, ruins, and proximity to many other important destinations nearby.

Many visitors choose to acclimate to the altitude in the area by spending a few days here in some of the area’s most beautiful luxury hotels, complete with extensive grounds and spas, including:

Urubamba is also home to Incan ruins of its own, the famous Quispiguanca royal palace of Incan emperor Huayna Capac. In the large open spaces, you can imagine the stately courtyards and spaces used to grow all kinds of food used to feed the emperor and his elite.

Though the ruins aren’t as impressive as some of the others you’ll find in the Sacred Valley, they’re worth a visit as a part of a tour of Urubamba and the surrounding area during one of your day trips from Cusco.

Urubamba is also a top-rated destination for river rafting, one of the best in Peru. You can find excellent, well-done  excursions for river rafting , along with the opportunity to zip line across the valley, another highlight for adventure seekers.

6. Humantay Lake

The pictures speak for themselves – Humantay Lake is a truly incredible destination and well worth your consideration if you’re choosing from among several options of day trips from Cusco. Visiting was one of our favorite things to do in Peru .

This aquamarine high-altitude lake, with the most beautiful snow-capped peak in the background, is a sight you won’t soon forget. Once infrequently visited, it’s now among the most popular Cusco day trips.

Cusco day trips to Humantay Lake  are quite affordable – generally around $40 USD – and are by far the easiest way to visit the site. Alternatively, you could take a taxi to Humantay Lake, but you’ll end up paying much more for transportation than you would by just joining a  Humantay Lake small group tour . 

Tours leave Cusco quite early in the morning, usually around 4:00 AM , as the journey to reach the lake takes about 3 hours. Once you arrive, prepare yourself for a hike! The trail from the parking area to the lake is uphill the whole way and takes about an hour to complete.

Good hiking boots are a must-have if you’re hiking the Inca Trail (though potentially overkill if just visiting Machu Picchu). However, if you plan to visit Humantay Lake, I recommend having your hiking boots ready. The ground is loose in some spots , and you’ll want good traction.

While the uphill hike is challenging – especially if you’re still getting accustomed to the altitude here – it’s not very technically difficult, and you’ll just need to take your time when hiking, as you will on most day trips from Cusco. The view at the base of the lake is well worth the effort!

7. Huchuy Qosqo

The ruins of the Incan site Huchuy Qosqo – known as “Little Cusco” – are an excellent choice for a day trip from Cusco , little visited but with much to offer those who make it here.

This former royal palace of the emperor Viracocha was a summer estate outside of Cusco , where he sought refugee after a revolt that would lead to his son, Pachacuti, taking control of the empire.

To reach Huchuy Qosqo, which is inaccessible via road, you’ll need to hike from the town below the ruins, Lamay, for about 2 hours until reaching the ruins. The hike is physically strenuous , so plan on adding this to your itinerary only after spending at least a few days in Cusco to adjust to the climate. You’ll need to book a guide for the hike . 

Some tour companies also offer  community tourism opportunities  in the town of Lamay in the valley, which is a great way to see traditional dances, try local food, and meet weaving cooperatives in the area, sustainably supporting tourism.  Community Tourism Cusco  offers an excellent excursion. 

Despite the effort to get here, you’ll be greatly rewarded with incredible views, amazing ruins, and an unmatched opportunity to visit this incredible destination in the Sacred Valley. It’s one of our favorite Cusco day trips if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path gem.

8. Chinchero

The small town of Chinchero – located between Cusco and Urubamba – seems to have everything you could ever want on day trips from Cusco.

In Chinchero you’ll find a lovely, historic village, home to artisans and an indigenous market where you can purchase beautiful textiles, plus Incan ruins of a royal palace and lovely, terraced hillsides.

You’ll have plenty of options for visiting Chinchero. Many of the  Sacred Valley tours  that take participants to various spots in the Sacred Valley include a stop in Chinchero. However, you’re not likely to find a group excursion that only brings you to Chinchero unless arranging a private tour with a guide.

These are some popular tour itineraries that include stops in Chinchero:

Of course, you’re also free to visit Chinchero independently as well! You can easily arrange for a taxi from Cusco, or take the public bus. Leaving from Cusco every hour, the bus ride costs just $2 USD and takes around 45 minutes. It’s one of the easier Cusco day trips you can choose from.

Other than visiting this gorgeous town, the Chinchero market, and the nearby ruins, if you’re looking for something else to do near Chinchero, consider ziplining! The zipline outside of Chinchero  is famous and perfect for adventurous spirits who would love a bird’s-eye view of the town and the valley below.

9. Tambomachay

The Incan ruins of Tambomachay make it among the best day trips from Cusco. Though not as extensive as the ruins you’ll find in larger Incan cities like Ollantaytambo or Pisac, Tambomachay is an incredible display of Incan ingenuity and construction prowess that make for an incredible visit.

Also known as El Baño del Inca  “the bath of the Inca,” Tambomachay is thought to have been a royal bathing complex outside Cusco for the city’s elite.

Other theories of its use are that it served a religious purpose, as you’ll find similar though less extensive fountain structures in many other Incan ruins throughout the Sacred Valley.

Tambomachay is so close to Cusco that it is included in many Cusco city tours, along with the ruins of Sacsayhuaman located on the crest just above the town.  These are the best local tours that include a visit to Tambomachay:

You can make sure to visit Tambomachay on a Cusco city tour, or plan to visit on your own by arranging for a taxi to reach the site. 10. South Valley

Last on our list of Cusco day trips – but certainly not least – is Cusco’s South Valley. While the Incan sites to the north and west of Cusco generally get all the attention, the South Valley sites are just as beautiful – and typically must less overrun with tourists, even during high season.

The  South Valley  is known for having some stunning and unique landscapes, whether you’re here around the rainy season and see them lush and green or in the dry season and see them in more beautiful yellows and burnt tones. 

The South Valley is home to several important Incan sites, including the most impressive three: Tipon, Pikillacta, and Andahuaylillas. Tipon is extremely impressive, with massive terraces and ornate stepping stone structures, as well as monumental and ceremonial fountains.

Pikillacta is the area’s only pre-Incan site, home to the Wari. Andahuaylillas is home to Incan ruins as well, though visiting is also the perfect chance to see the quaint, historic town with the beautiful church known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” It makes it among the most unique Cusco day trips you can choose from.

You can find a relatively inexpensive  half-day or full-day tour of the South Valley that covers these three main archeological sites and includes transportation, food, and a knowledgeable guide.

This is the best way to easily and conveniently explore in just one day – and you’ll save money with a small group excursion rather than just using taxis from place to place.

The Best Day Trips from Cusco

No matter how long you spend in Cusco, I’d still recommend exploring more of the Sacred Valley around the city.  I’d say 2 days in Cusco is the absolute minimum to enjoy the city and acclimatize to the altitude before attempting hikes or treks.

Some Cusco tours are ideal to help you acclimatize to the altitude in Cusco, whereas other more active day trips are best for once you can fully cope with the elevation here. 

I’ve put together a comprehensive list of the best day trips from Cusco Peru so you can plan your trip to the Sacred Valley with ease.

Machu Picchu Day Tours from Cusco

You can’t talk about Cusco and not mention the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu!  This incredible place is one of the seven New Wonders of the World, and If you are not up for hiking the Inca Trail or doing another trek to Machu Picchu , then it is possible to take a day trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu.   

Most tour agencies in Cusco offer day trips to Machu Picchu from Cusco, which are a great option if you are short on time, but be prepared for a very long day with an early start.

Machu Picchu day tours from Cusco typically include all transport (train and bus), a bilingual guide and entrance to Machu Picchu, but be sure to check the details of each tour package carefully.  Some include standard train tickets from Cusco to Machu Picchu, and others include a ‘Vistadome’ train which has windows on the ceiling and sides of the train. 

I honestly don’t know if being able to see above you makes any difference, but if you are on a once-in-a-lifetime trip then you might want to make the most of it!

It is possible to book tours to Machu Picchu while you are in Cusco, but there are a limited number of entrance tickets to Machu Picchu available each day, so I would recommend booking a tour in advance to guarantee your preferred date.

Tours are available on Viator , but I usually use GetYourGuide to book my day trips. Some of the top day tours to Machu Picchu from Cusco available on GetYourGuide include:

Visiting Machu Picchu Without a Tour

If you prefer not to take a tour then you could book your train tickets and Machu Picchu tickets independently.  In order to enter Machu Picchu, new rules mean you have to be with a guide, so you could arrange a tour guide at the entrance to Machu Picchu, or pre-book a guide with your tickets .

If you choose to travel independently, make sure you check the entry requirements and plan your trip carefully – in this case, I would suggest spending the night in Aguas Calientes to ensure you get an early start.

Trains run from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (aka Machu Picchu Town) at the base of the mountain, and you then hike up the steps to Machu Picchu, or take a bus which is much easier and quicker!  Spending the night in Aguas Calientes means you can be up early and potentially see the sunrise at Machu Picchu , which was the highlight of my trip to South America.

Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain as it’s commonly known, was only discovered a few years ago, as it was previously always covered in snow.  Perhaps the only positive effect of global warming has been to melt the snow here and reveal the beautiful colours on the mountainside!

The hike is challenging, reaching over 5000 metres above sea level.  Make sure you are fully acclimatized before attempting the hike and prepare for a very early start from Cusco.  It is not recommended to hike in wet or snowy weather as the trail can become dangerously slippery and the visibility is poor.  

Bear in mind  that if you are planning to hike the Ausangate Trek to Machu Picchu, you can also visit Rainbow Mountain as part of the trek so there is no need to plan a separate day tour from Cusco.

A day trek to Rainbow Mountain can be arranged through various Cusco tour agencies or you can pre-book online .

Lake Titicaca Tour from Cusco

Day trips from Cusco to Lake Titicaca are only possible if you take an overnight bus from Cusco to Puno, spend the day at Lake Titicaca, and return to Cusco on another night bus. 

It is a long way, and if you have more time then it is probably better to spend at least one night at Lake Titicaca so you’re not exhausted from the journey.  However, if you only have one day (and two nights) and you want to see Lake Titicaca then this is a good way to do it.

Peru Hop offers these day tours from Cusco to Lake Titicaca from $79 USD per person, leaving Cusco at 9pm at night, spending the next day at the lake, and getting back to Cusco at 5 or 6am the following morning. 

These tours include a guided visit of the Uros Islands on the lake (man-made reed islands) and a tour of Taquile Island, as well as the chance to enjoy the beautiful waters of the highest navigable lake in the world.   >>>LEARN MORE

Sacred Valley Day Tours from Cusco

There are agencies who arrange Sacred Valley tours from Cusco to take in several of the following sites in one day, but they can be very rushed.  However, if you want to fit in as much as possible into just one day then a day tour like this will be your best bet.

If you have enough time I would recommend spending at least one full day in Pisac and the same for Ollantaytambo, staying there overnight if you can.  Moray and Maras can be easily done in a day trip from Cusco including a quick stop at Chinchero as well if you decide to take a Sacred Valley tour from Cusco.

Pisac (Pisaq)

Pisac is a quaint little town, and definitely worth a day trip from Cusco or more time if you can spare it.  Plan your visit to coincide with the huge market on Saturday, for one of the best markets in South America.  There is a smaller market here every day though, so don’t worry if Saturday won’t fit with your itinerary!

Pisac is also known as a centre for alternative therapies and is a great place to arrange a massage before or after your trek to Machu Picchu!  The entrance fee to Pisac archaeological site is included in the Boleto Turistico tourist ticket , and you can either hike up from a path at the back of the market or take a taxi up to Pisac ruins from the centre of town to explore and admire the scenery across the valley.

Ollantaytambo

I loved Ollantaytambo as it was much quieter and less touristy than Cusco.  I would recommend spending a couple of nights here on your way from Cusco to Machu Picchu as it is mid-way between the two and gives you a different base for exploring the Sacred Valley.  However, some people choose to visit Ollantaytambo on a day trip from Cusco which is a good option if you are short on time.

The Inca ruins here are built high up on a mountain above the town and were the site of Manco Inca’s last stand against the Spanish before he fled into the jungle.  Although originally built as temples, the ruins here are often referred to as a fortress for that reason.  Access is included in the Boleto Turistico Cusco Tourist Ticket.

There are plenty of other  things to do in Ollantaytambo aside from the ruins, including a chocolate museum, the market and visiting local communities.  Ollantaytambo is also closer to Moray and Maras, so you can visit those sites on a day trip from Cusco or as a tour from Ollantaytambo if you spend a couple of nights here.

To get to Ollantaytambo from Cusco you can take a collectivo shared taxi, or book a private transfer .

Moray and Maras Tours from Cusco

These two unique sites are quite close together, so typically visited together as part of a day trip from Cusco or Ollantaytambo.  It is possible to visit them independently but the public transport isn’t reliable, so taking a day tour is much easier. 

Day trips from Cusco to Moray and Maras Salt Mines on quad bikes are popular, or you can arrange a bike tour or a horse riding tour for a unique way to travel!  If you prefer something a little less adventurous then try a tour with car or bus transportation .  No matter how you get there, both sites are definitely worth exploring.

Moray, the agricultural experimentation centre of the Incas, is a unique Inca site as it was built specifically for agriculture, not as a religious or residential site.  The circular terraces allowed the Inca to experiment with different plants and climates to find the perfect conditions to grow their crops. 

Incas were accomplished farmers, and the unique terraces at Moray show how advanced they were in farming.  The circular terraces look more like alien crop circles than an agricultural centre and Moray was one of my favourite archaeological sites.  Entry is included with the Cusco Tourist Ticket.

Maras salt mines or Salinas have been used for salt evaporation since Inca times.  Salty water surfaces from a subterranean stream and is directed through a system of channels down the mountainside, trickling through a series of man-made salt ponds.  As the water gradually evaporates, the salt is harvested.  It is a surreal sight on the mountainside and a fascinating insight into how the Inca developed salt harvesting.

The archaeological site at Chinchero is the remains of the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui, with a series of terraces overlooking beautiful mountains.  There is also a colonial temple built on Inca foundations which you can go inside.

In the village of Chinchero, go to one of the many Textile Workshops where local women do demonstrations of traditional weaving techniques with the opportunity to buy the goods they make.  A visit to Chinchero is usually included in Sacred Valley tours to Moray & Maras or Pisac , or you can take a collectivo from Cusco for an independent visit.

Off The Beaten Path Cusco Day Trips

Some tours around Cusco go where most of the tourists don’t – so if you want a more unusual experience check out some of these day trips from Cusco:

Humantay Lake

Humantay Lake is a spectacular turquoise lake surrounded by mountains.  It makes a wonderful day trip from Cusco either with a tour or independently with a taxi (there is no public transport to the lake).  It’s about a 3-hour drive from Cusco to the trailhead and about an hour to an hour and a half hike to the lake itself. 

The scenery is absolutely stunning, and the hike isn’t particularly challenging as it is quite short, but it is a constant upward trail to the lake which gets slippery after heavy rain.

Make sure you are fully acclimatized to the altitude in Cusco before attempting the hike and remember to bring food for breakfast and lunch, and plenty of water.  Most Cusco tour agencies will offer a day trip to Humantay Lake, including transport, breakfast, lunch and a guide.  Some tours include the entrance ticket to Humantay Lake, with other tours you will have to pay the 10 soles entrance fee yourself.

If you do the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, you will stop off at Humantay Lake so you wouldn’t need a separate day trip in that instance.

Rafting and Ziplining

If you like more adventurous activities then a rafting and zip-lining trip could be right up your street.  Cusco is close to several good rafting rivers, and you can arrange a rafting tour with most agencies in Cusco. 

The Urubamba River is one of the most popular spots for rafting, with class II and III rapids about an hour and a half outside of Cusco.  During the rainy season, the rivers are higher and rapids can get up to class III or IV after heavy rain. 

Tours typically include all rafting and safety equipment, lunch, transport and a guide.  You can also take a separate half-day zip line tour if you prefer to keep dry!

Horse Riding Tours from Cusco

There are several options for horseback riding excursions from Cusco, to take in the countryside and some of the less-visited Inca sites around Cusco.  Popular trail rides usually visit the Temple of the Moon and Temple of the Rainbow or the “Devil’s Balcony”.

Other horse riding half-day tours from Cusco include visits to the Inca archaeological sites Puca-Pucara, Tambomachay, Qenko, and Saqsayhuaman.  Check out some options here.  

A South Valley Day Trip from Cusco

About an hour’s drive south-east of Cusco are two lesser-visited archaeological sites which are both special in their own ways.  Most tourists don’t explore this side of Cusco and stick to the archaeological sites closer to the city, but with a little extra effort, you will be rewarded with a unique pre-Inca settlement at Pikillacta and a feat of hydrological engineering at Tipon.  

You can visit independently by taking a taxi to Tipon and/or Pikillacta from Cusco, or take a day tour to include transport and a guide .  You will need the Cusco Tourist Ticket to visit these two sites.

Pikillacta Archaeological Site was built by the Wari culture around 500AD and shows how the Inca learned from previous civilisations.  The site is huge, and best visited with a guide who can explain the functions of the different areas.  Don’t miss the views from the viewpoint at the wall above the main entrance.

Tipon demonstrates the skill of the Inca’s hydrological engineering, with large terraces and lots of water channels bringing water to crops and so the Inca had fresh water to drink.  The town of Tipon is also renowned for its Guinea Pig dishes, so plan a stop for lunch there if you’re feeling brave!

Where to Stay in Cusco

The central area around the Plaza de Armas is the most convenient and close to all the major attractions but it tends to be busier and noisy at times.  The San Blas neighbourhood is pretty and quieter, but anywhere away from the central plaza tends to be a good walk up a hill which can be a challenge with heavy bags!

I visited Peru a decade ago so much of this sounds familiar but I missed most of your suggestions! The Rainbow site sounds amazing and Ollantaytambo is a city I’d gladly return to. Sadly altitude sickness messed with much of my comfort during my entire trip!

A visit to Peru is very high up on my list. We wanted to go there last spring, but we ended up in Patagonia instead, lol. We are hoping to make it to Cusco by the end of the year and I’d love to try some of these day trips. I would particularly be interested in visiting Lake Titicaca. I’m glad to see some hotel recommendations in your post. That’s very helpful.

We were so disappointed last to have to cancel our Machu Picchu trip. But with some idea about day tours from Cusco, we can plan a better trip next time. But I did not know that you could do just a day trip to see Machu Picchu. Pictures of Rainbow Mountain have been tantalizing for me a while. Not sure that the climate change reason for the colours being visible is great. But the colours are great to see. The Sacred Valley would definitely be on our list. It looks like we could probably spent a week just travelling from Cusco.

Would definitely make Cusco my central point for like 3-4 days, after this post, when I visit Macchu Picchu. Everyone I know has only visited Cusco to see Macchu Picchu and some went on to explore Moray. But I am so glad you included Pikillacta and Humantay in your list! I prefer traveling independently and doing things on my own. For visiting Machu Picchu I would hike up by myself. And afterward, I would go to Pisac and would have a good massage there.

To be honest Peru and Machu Picchu have been on my bucket list for a quite long time now. But, what keeps me away from Machu Picchu are the crowds. I have read somewhere that about 4.000 people a day visit Machu Picchu. That was a huge deal breaker for me. Please tell me that’s not true.

What a fascinating area. I can see why you have spent so much time there, so much to absorb! I’d love to visit the Uros Islands as I’ve not heard of any islands made of reed before. But those Circular Terraces, wow. They look like perfect circles, which can’t possibly have been easy to do considering the terrain. Have they always been so ‘perfect’ looking? Most people know of Machu Picchu when they learn about Cusco, but sometimes the better hikes are ones that are less known. I personally loved Ollantaytambo and Pisac because the towns themselves are worth staying in. Whichever day trip you decide to do, I’m sure you’ll find something appreciating.

How To Get to Humantay Lake from Cusco

Laguna Humantay can be visited independently or as part of a guided tour. For those strictly looking to visit the Lake as a day trip, it’s best to utilize an organized tour group.

14 | Lares Hot Springs

Lares is located in the Lares Valley, which can be reached from the village of Calca in the Sacred Valley. The trip to Lares will be an extremely long day trip from Cusco.

Travelers come to Lares to soak in the rustic Lares hot springs .  These curative waters are used by locals to bathe, so don’t expect a luxury spa day. However, the incredible setting nestled in the mountains and along the rushing river makes a trip to Lares worth it.

The hot springs pools range in temperate and the water appears yellowish from all the rich minerals found in the water. There is a small cooling pool and steaming hot outdoor showers.

The Lares hot spring complex is surrounded by a garden, which has places to pitch a tent or enjoy a picnic. Onsite are a few guest rooms because these hot springs are open 24 hours!

How to Get to Lares from Cusco

Lares is a super long day trip from Cusco. First, you’ll need to head to Calca from Cusco.

In Cusco, collectivos depart from Puputi Street , remember these are where the collectivos depart for Pisac. Make sure to hop on one that passes through Pisac and continues to Calca.

Collectivo Logistic Cusco to Calca | Cost: 6 PEN ($1.75) | Duration: 1 hour | Collectivos depart when full

Once in Calca, find a collectivo going to Lares.

Collectivos Logistics | Calca to Lares | Cost: 13 PEN ($3.50) | Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes | Collectivos depart when full | Buses run from 6:00-18:00 | Last bus from Lares to Calca is 18:00!

As you can see, the Lares Hot Springs take almost three hours to reach from Cusco. There are a few guesthouses in Lares, but none are online. Calca has accommodation options , or nearby Urubamba is a great place to sleep in the Sacred Valley.

The Lares Trek, or Weaver’s Way , is becoming a popular alternative trek to Machu Picchu.

If you’re traveling in Peru, you’ll likely end up visiting Cusco for some amount of time.

Cusco is a beautiful, colonial town situated in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains. Although many people simply use Cusco as a jumping point for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, it’s worth sticking around since there are many things to do around Cusco.

After taking some time to acclimatize to the altitude, there are several day trips from Cusco to beautiful ruins, mountain areas, and natural wonders that you can discover. Read on for our top picks.

The Best Day Trips from Cusco

Machu picchu.

One of the most obvious day trips from Cusco is to Machu Picchu – the famed Incan ruins situated high in the mountains. Designated a UNESCO world heritage site, it’s one of the most compelling reasons that people visit Peru.

Their desire to visit isn’t unwarranted; with its stunning location and mystery-shrouded aura, Machu Picchu is truly a spectacle that belongs on everyone’s bucket list.

While many people opt to trek to Machu Picchu , you can also visit it as a day trip from Cusco. In order to visit Machu Picchu, you’ll need to secure your ticket ($70 + any additional hikes) well in advance. These tickets are only good for one date and one-time slot, morning or afternoon, so you’ll need to plan your timing accordingly.

Either way, your day will begin REALLY early, by taking a taxi or collectivo to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll catch the train ($65-100+ USD round trip) to Aguas Calientes. From there, you can either hike (free) or take the bus ($12 USD each way) to the ruins.

If you want to escape the crowds at Machu Picchu or do an extra hike during your visit, I suggest getting there at the earliest possible time during your time slot.

Huchuy Qosqo Ruins

A hidden gem located near Cusco, this is a challenging but rewarding long-day hike for the adventurous souls out there. The 11-mile trail follows part of the famed Inca Trail and leads to some ruins of a once-magnificent Incan fortress.

Perhaps an even more wonderful benefit of this hike is panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, with mountains, valleys, and snow caps galore.

While many tour operators in Cusco can organize a tour for this hike, you can also hire a private guide or do it on your own. If you’re hoping to try it yourself, you can follow the very detailed directions on this awesome post on hiking to Huchuy Qosqo  by Di from Slight North.

Sacred Valley Day Tour

One of the most fascinating regions in Peru is the Sacred Valley, which is home to amazing Incan ruins, some strange salt flats, and a bunch of beautiful views and hiking trails to explore.

This is an easy and popular day trip from Cusco, but to enter several sights in the Sacred Valley, you’ll need to purchase a boleto turistico (130 PEN or $45 for 10 days), which will grant you entry. We recommend getting an early start as there’s a lot to see in one day!

There are two ways to get around the Sacred Valley: joining a tour group or hiring a taxi. If you are traveling solo, it’s more economical to join a tour group.

However, if you have the budget, we highly recommend foregoing the tour and instead, renting a private taxi to take you around to the sights. The taxi should cost (with a bit of negotiation), ~$80-100 USD for up to four people for one full day in Sacred Valley.

Time: Full Day Approximate Cost: $65-180 USD

River Rafting in the Sacred Valley

With its rapids and turns, the beautiful Urubamba River winds its way through the Sacred Valley.

To enjoy the beauty and scenery of the river, one of the most thrilling and active day trips from Cusco is joining a white water rafting trip. You’ll join a small group, hop in an inflatable raft, and cruise down the river for 2-3 hours.

To book a rafting tour, many companies recommend making a reservation well in advance, especially during the high season. However, you can also try to book a tour when you’re in Cusco with one of the local tour operators. Rafting tours are typically reasonably priced, with many of the online ones costing ~$50 per person.

Time: ~6 hours Approximate Cost: $50-100 USD

Visit Pisac Market

If you love people-watching and cultural experiences, you can’t miss Pisac, a small town in the Sacred Valley that’s home to one of the most spectacular markets in the region. Don’t leave this one out of your planned short trips from Cusco.

A mix of produce and artisan (read: touristy) goods, it’s a feast for the senses (and the lenses, if you’re a photographer).

On Sundays, the market is largest and attracts many locals who live in the higher altitude regions to sell their goods and pick up supplies for the week. However, if you visit on a weekday, the artisan shops will still be open for you to explore.

Arriving at the market is fairly easy and straightforward. To get to Pisac, you can take a colectivo or a taxi from the Cusco bus station. It takes about 1 hour to arrive in Pisac from Cusco by car.

Time: 4-5 hours Approximate Cost: $15+ (not including price of purchasing items at the market)

Q’arañahui Caves & Qeswachaka Bridge

If you’re fascinated by Incan culture but want to do more than simply hit up the main ruin areas, the Q’arañahui Caves and Qeswachaka Bridge is a short trip from Cusco that might be for you.

These day trips are typically done with a tour group and leave from Cusco, first heading to the original Qeswachaka Incan bridge. Made of woven fibers, you can cross the Apurimac River via the bridge.

Afterward, the tour takes you to the Q’arañahui Caves where you explore the impressive underground world there.

You can book this as a tour online via a variety of operators or in-person in Cusco. We didn’t get to try this one ourselves, but have heard it’s really cool for those who enjoy caves and intrepid travel experiences.

From what we saw online, prices tend to run pretty high, at over $100 USD per day. Typically, booking in person in Cusco is a bit cheaper.

Time: Full day Approximate cost: $100+

Sacsayhuaman Ruins

This isn’t  quite a day trip from Cusco, but it’s far enough out of the city center that we think it counts. These Incan ruins, which overlook the city of Cusco, are located just outside the city up a very steep set of stairs.

At the top, you can enjoy stunning views amidst the ruined Incan fortress structures (your  boleto turistico  from the Sacred Valley should let you in here as well).

Time: 2 hours Approximate cost: $46 USD for boleto turistico

Pisac’s Three Lakes Hike

If you want to hike to some stellar views and amazing, off-the-beaten-path lakes, this is one of the most ideal day trips from Cusco.

Accessible to all levels of hikers, it’s a great way to get outdoors and explore the countryside. Located just outside of Pisac, it’s an easy hour-long drive to arrive at the trails.

The trip starts in Pisac, so much like the Pisac Market day trip, you’ll make your way to Pisac via taxi, bus, or colectivo.

From there, hire another taxi for the day (be sure to negotiate beforehand), and head first to Kinsa Cocha Laguna, where you can hike to two interconnected lakes, and then head onward via taxi to the third lake.

Time: Half day Cost: $40-50

ATV Tour in the Sacred Valley

If you’re hoping to get some fresh air but also cover a lot of ground, one of the best and most fun ways to see the Sacred Valley is an ATV tour.

Rafael did this tour while in Peru and calls it one of the best day trips from Cusco. His favorite part about it? Traveling through remote villages, wildlife areas, and a gorgeous hidden lake high in the mountains.

You can book this tour with many tour operators in Cusco. With the tour, you’ll drive out to the countryside and get briefed on how to drive the ATV. Then, you’ll spend approximately 4 hours touring around in your group (with a guide of course!).

Time: 4-5 hours Approximate cost: $35-50

10 INCREDIBLE Day Trips from Cusco + Tips! (2024)

Planning your trip to Cusco and overwhelmed with the abundance of day trips from Cusco? I’ve been there too. There are so many incredible sights both within Cusco and just a day trip away!

I spent 6 weeks in Cusco living and volunteering there. However, I had lots of time to explore the city and take my fair share of day trips. I can honestly say, I have fallen in love with this vibrant city and it’s beautiful surrounding mountains.

In this post, I will go through 10 of the best day trips from Cusco, share my favorite spots, and even give some insider tips along the way.

10 incredible day trips from cusco.

7 Lakes of Ausangate

When visiting Cusco, one of the hidden gems is 7 Lakes of Ausangate. These picturesque mountains sit at over 14,000 feet and are absolutely beautiful!

There are a few companies that run day trips from cusco to 7 Lakes of Ausangate, however, it is significantly less popular than Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain.

The drive is about 3 hours from Cusco, one-way. So you’ll want to be prepared for a long car ride. However, once you arrive, you have a beautiful hike that is moderately challenging ahead. Although the hike is a small incline, at this elevation you will feel every bit of it!

One of the best parts about this day trip from Cusco is that there are hot springs nearby! When you finish your hike and looking at the beautiful scenery, you can relax in natural hot springs. While I didn’t bring my swim suit, I heard these hot springs were really nice and well maintained. 

When looking for day trips from Cusco, this hidden gem should be at the top of your list because the views are just as beautiful as other spots, with much less tourists!

Humantay Lake

On the way to Machu Picchu you will find Humantay Lake. Although it’s most popular for being the first stop along the famous Salkantay Trek, it also makes for a great day trip!

Humantay Lake is a beautiful lake at a high elevation with soaring mountain views. After having visited both Humantay Lake and 7 Lakes of Ausangate, I must say I am biased to the latter, but this one is nice too.

Humantay lake is about a 2 hour drive from Cusco, and a short and steep hike up to the lake. The lake sits at nearly 14,000 feet, so you will feel the air thinned out here. This makes it harder to breathe when you are hiking.

However, if you still want to visit the lake but you are not up for the hike, no worries! There are horses available for hire that will take you to the lake. Many people utilized these during my visit, and I really recommend it if you need it.

Machu Picchu

Can I really make a list of the best day trips from Cusco without including Machu Picchu?! 

Machu Picchu, one of the new seven wonders of the world, is without a doubt the most popular thing to do while in Cusco.

Although I recommend taking a few days to visit the area of Machu Picchu, it is possible to do in a day trip, however it is one of the most expensive options.

To take a day trip from Machu Picchu, you will need to take the train. It takes around 3 hours to get from Cusco to the base of Machu Picchu, and then another 20 minute bus ride up.

A day trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu will be a BIG day, but if you are short on time, this is the best option for you! Just be sure to pack snacks because you will be busy!

Rainbow Mountain

Admittedly, I wasn’t the most excited about Rainbow Mountain on my trip to Cusco. I heard the hike was hard and the pictures all look edited to me. However, I have hear it is a nice place to visit, and one that is a must-do for many travelers!

In recent years, Rainbow Mountain has taken over social media and become really popular for tourists! This means it is crowded!

Many tourists visit Rainbow Mountain, so there is an overwhelming amount of tour companies willing to take you.

PRO-TIP: If you are in a group of 3-4 consider taking a taxi in the afternoon to rainbow mountain. The price will be similar or a bit cheaper, you have private transportation, and the afternoons are less crowded than the mornings.

Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is a large area just an hour away from Cusco that is famous for it’s fertile land and Inca ruins. It’s an area home to many of the most famous sights in Cusco. However, when visiting the Sacred Valley there are many tours that go to different stops because it is impossible to do everything in a single day.

I really love day trips to the Sacred Valley because it’s only an hour away, significantly less driving than most other day trips.

Most of the day trips to the Sacred Valley stop in Pisac and Ollaytaytambo, which are both incredible day trips on their own. However, if you are short on time, you might need to combine everything into one day, to get the most out of your day.

In the Sacred Valley you will find Pisac (or Pisaq), which is one of the most popular towns in the area. Although many tourists visit Pisac quickly, as a part of a Sacred Valley tour to see the Inca Valley ruins, it is full of beautiful city streets, markets, restaurants, and beautiful mountains.

In my opinion, it’s best to do Pisac as a tour on your own. Everyday, there are lots of “Collectivos” or public shared buses that run from Cusco to Pisac. These buses are really cheap, only $1 for an hour long bus ride!

Pisac is best to visit on a Sunday, when the large market comes to life in the city center! However, any day of the week is magical here.

If you have extra time, many travelers choose to spend a night or two in Pisac to relax in the mountains.

A hidden gem, and popular among locals is Izcuchaca. For the most authentic and least touristy day trip from Cusco, visit Izcuchaca! 

Only an hour outside of Cusco, Izcuchaca is a small town in the Sacred Valley. While it’s not a tourist town, if you are looking to get off the beaten path and more local this is a great spot.

To get here, you can take a bus from Plaza Santiago to Izcuchaca. They run about every 15 minutes and only cost 3 Soles for a one-way ticket!

After about 45 minutes of driving you’ll end up in Izcuchaca. THe bus station is in the heart of the city, so from here you can begin walking and exploring.

Remember, here you can take it easy and relax in this authentic Peruvian town. Grab some food, explore, and relax among the mountains. It really is a gorgeous place with a relaxing vibe.

Ollantaytambo

One of the major train stops on the way to Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo is a popular spot for many travelers to make their way through, however very few stop to enjoy the city.

Just an hour drive outside of Cusco, Ollantaytambo is full of things to do. From ancient Inca Ruins to snow-capped mountains, this town in the Sacred Valley is worthy of a whole day dedicated to it!

Ollantaytambo also sits at a lower elevation than Cusco, making it a good day trip to help acclimate to the high elevation of the area, while still having something to do.

I really like Ollantaytambo because it is less touristy than other towns in the Sacred Valley, while still having a good amount to see and do.

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is known as the birthplace of the Inca’s but also as one of the largest freshwater lakes to sit at such a high elevation! This lake is important because it gives life to the region, giving them fresh soil to grow crops and food.

However, Lake Titicaca is better known as a weekend trip from Cusco, and not feasible as a day trip. But, I still included it in this list because it’s worth considering a visit!

Overnight trips to Lake Titicaca are usually 3 days and give tourists the opportunity to live like a local and see their everyday life. It really is a unique experience and hard to find elsewhere as a tourist.

Moray and Maras

Last, but certainly not least, is a day trip to Moray and Maras in the Sacred Valley. I know, this list has many trips to the Sacred Valley and that is because it’s full of things to do and within a close distance to Cusco. However, Moray and Maras might be one of my favorite day trips from Cusco!

This day trip is a popular one, and with good reason! Moray and Maras are two different locations in the Sacred Valley, but nearby each other.

Moray is Inca ruins famous for the near perfect circles the Inca’s created. These circles helped with irrigation of the crops. 

Maras is the famous salt mine of the area! It’s really unique and interesting to learn about. The landscapes are different than anything I have ever seen before, and the salt produced here is just insane!

To get here, it’s best to book a tour or you could rent a car and road trip.

Final Thoughts on the best Day Trips from Cusco

Cusco is a gateway city to so many beautiful landscapes and historical sights. While Cusco itself is worth spending a few days in, there are so many wonderful and iconic day trips from Cusco. From Machu Picchu to small towns in the Sacred Valley, there is so much to choose from!

After having spent 6 weeks living and exploring Cusco, I have experienced all of the day trips and really fallen in love with everything there is to do and learn in this region! It’s truly magical.

That’s why I recommend spending a week or more just in Cusco alone! There is so much to experience here, you won’t be disappointed.

A visit to this charming town nestled within the Sacred Valley would not be complete without exploring the impressive Písac Ruins, which feature impressive terraces and intricate stonework.

At the nearby Písac Market, you can shop for traditional textiles, jewelry, and handicrafts made by local artisans.

For a more active adventure, hike to the top of the Písac Ruins or explore the surrounding countryside on horseback. 

Hire a cab or join a guided tour. The trip from Cusco will take approximately an hour and a half. Alternatively, you can ride a local bus, but it may take longer and be less comfortable.

8. Chinchero

Chinchero is a small Andean village located less than 20 miles from Cusco. Its traditional weaving techniques, which have been passed down for generations, are its calling card.

You can swing by local workshops to see the process of turning wool into beautifully woven textiles and even try your hand at it yourself.

Chinchero also has an impressive colonial church and an Inca ruin complex with imposing terraces and views of the surrounding mountains. 

You can easily reach Chinchero by car, cab, or by taking a shared van from Cusco.

9. Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is one of the coolest and off-the-beaten-path Cusco day trips. The journey there is as thrilling as the destination itself, passing through stunning mountain landscapes and traditional Andean villages.

Once in Santa Teresa, you’ll get to enjoy a range of activities such as lounging in the natural hot springs, exploring the nearby coffee and coca plantations, and trekking to the waterfalls of Mandor. 

Take a bus to Hidroeléctrica, followed by a scenic hike along the train tracks to the town.

10. Humantay Lake

The lake is located at an altitude of 2.6 miles above sea level, and the hike to reach it is not easy and can take approximately four hours round trip, but the reward is worth it.

11. Huacarpay

Cusco itself is a gorgeous city, steeped in history and full of charm. There are plenty of things to do in Cusco , the Capital of the Incas. However, it’s also located close to many attractions in the surrounding area, including ancient wonders and landmarks of stunning natural beauty. This makes Cusco the perfect base from which to explore the best of the region via day trips.

1. machu picchu.

Of course, one of the most popular places to visit near Cusco is the famous Incan citadel of Machu Picchu! This 15th-century ‘lost city’ of the Inca Empire is as fascinating as it is photogenic, and it belongs on any Peru bucket list.

Some people do the 4-day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu , but lots of people visit Machu Picchu an easier way, as a day trip from Cusco. The scenic train ride takes about 3.5 hours each way.

There are some great things to do in Machu Picchu. You can see the iconic viewpoint and get your picture taken with the citadel in the background; go for a stroll in the ruins, and interact with the friendly llamas, which roam freely around the grounds of Machu Picchu. Believe it or not, Machu Picchu is one of the family-friendly attractions in Peru .

Last, but not least, there are a number of great day hikes at Machu Picchu, including the Huayna Picchu mountain (also known as Wayna Picchu) or a shorter and easier hike with similar views, called Huchuy Picchu. Reservations are required in advance, which you can arrange online.

Any of these activities are possible to do on a Machu Picchu day trip, although you might only have time for one hike at a time (i.e. you can hike Huayna Picchu and then do sightseeing at the Machu Picchu ruins before heading back to Cusco). Whether you go independently or take a group tour to Machu Picchu , it’s definitely well worth the time to visit!

2. Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

One of the more unique day trips from Cusco,  hiking Rainbow Mountain , offers a breath-taking mountain view.

Rainbow Mountain is known for its colourful mountain peak with several different layers of vibrant minerals. These layers are created by the various minerals in the soil including clay, mud, sand, quatorze, sandstone, calcium carbonate, and claystone.

As of only a decade ago, Rainbow Mountain was completely unvisited as the peak was covered year-round in snow. Sadly, the peak is only viewable due to climate change that has affected the region.

The hike overall is not difficult with a gradual incline until close to the peak. What makes the trail difficult is the altitude which tops off at 16,000 feet at the highest point. Riding a horse is an option, although you’ll still need to walk the final part as it’s too steep for horses.

The initial viewpoint fills up quickly, so climbing the second hill will allow for smaller crowds and better views. The hill is steep and the additional altitude can be tough on many hikers. 

Some tour operators also offer hikes that take visitors back down through the red valley, which is a blazing red-coloured wonderland just off the main trail. The red colours of the soil are so distinct and feel almost alien.

It is possible to visit the hike either as a group or individually. Either way, it is important to check the weather before going as viewing the peak is very weather-dependent. Rainbow Mountain tours tend to leave Cusco between 3:30 and 4 am and return 12 hrs later and include breakfast and lunch. Going independent is possible by booking your own taxi or car from Cusco. Entrance to Rainbow Mountain is 30 soles per individual and 20 Soles for Red Valley (10 for Red Mountain and an additional 10 for Red Valley). 

3. Moray & Maras

A brilliant Cusco day trip is to the ruins of Moray, the small town of Maras and the Salt mines of Maras – all in one day.

The first stop of the day is Moray, where you’ll find one of the most famous Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley. The ruin itself is several terraced circles, which are believed to have been used by the Incas to grow food. Astonishingly, the variation of temperature can be up to 5 degrees C between the top and the bottom, leading to the theory that the Incas used them to be able to experiment with how crops grow in different conditions.

After the ruins, the lovely small town of Maras is a perfect spot for some lunch. From here, visit the Salineras of Maras, a large and photogenic salt production site spanning across the valley.

The easiest way to do this trip in one day is to use the same taxi all day (the destinations are not near main roads so there are not many taxis around them). A daily rate can be negotiated with the taxis in Cusco. If you are looking for more of an active day, take a taxi to Moray in the morning and walk all the way to the bottom of the valley to catch a taxi back to Cusco.

There are also companies in Cusco that provide a Moray & Maras guided tour as a day trip.

4. Humantay Lake

Humantay Lake is a turquoise, alpine lake that sits at an elevation of 13,900 feet.  Located about 2 hours outside the city, Humantay Lake is one of the most picturesque day trips from Cusco.

The easiest and most popular way to enjoy this activity is on a day tour. It is possible to  hike Humantay Lake independently  which will help you avoid the crowds and add a bit of thrill. However, you can also go on a guided tour .

The hike to Humantay Lake is only 2.6 miles round trip and takes about 2 hours to complete.  Don’t let the short miles fool you: this Cusco hike is tough.  With a 1,200 feet elevation at a high altitude, it will leave you huffing and puffing. 

There isn’t much else to do around the lake as it’s pretty isolated out in the wilderness.  If you have time, are physically fit and thrive on a sense of adventure, one of the best ways to experience this hike is by embarking on the Salkantay Trek.  Lake Humantay is a side trip on the first day of this 46-mile trek to Machu Picchu. 

Whichever way you do it, with the dramatic mountains that backdrop the lake and the sense of accomplishment when you make it to the top, this excursion is not to be missed. 

 5. Pisac

The Pisac Archaeological Park is definitely one of the best day trips you can take from Cusco. With its impressive ruins from the Inca era and its extraordinary and fascinating landscape formations, this place simply will not leave you unmoved.

The park’s remarkable ruins are one of the main reasons for  a day trip to Pisac . They belong to an ancient Inca fortress whose roots date back to the 15th century. Besides the imposing ruins to explore here, the site’s breathtaking natural beauty is also a focal point. Ancient field terraces, created to cultivate essential food crops, transform the complex into a unique picturesque scene.

Písac is part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and, therefore, can only be visited with the Boleto Turístico. You can choose between a two and 10-day ticket that includes additional attractions of the Sacred Valley. The site is located about 22 miles from Cusco, making it one of the closest day trip destinations. You can reach Pisac as part of a guided tour , by public transportation, such as Colectivo or bus, or by taxi.

After visiting the ruins park of Pisac, it is also worthwhile to walk to the town centre. A small market is held here three times a week where you can buy souvenirs and fresh food.

6. Ausangate

Ausangate is one of the most talked about day trips from Cusco since the mountain range is visible from the streets of Cusco. It is a fantastic hiking destination known for its incredible seven coloured lakes, as well as its towering peaks which set the backdrop.

The lagoons which make up part of Ausangate’s scenery feature shades of turquoise, black, wine, and green and are a must-see on one of the many small-group day hikes.

The trek here is best done with a tour company that first starts from Cusco and drives into the national park.  Travellers also get the chance to visit the village of Paqchanta where they are usually met by the inhabitants and descendants of Incas, who speak the Quechua language, for lunch. They share even more about what the beautiful mountain range has to offer. The nature around here is diverse and it is not until getting closer that its size can be fully appreciated.

Those that don’t plan ahead for this trip as part of their  backpacking Cusco itinerary  may choose the option to go via horse. This is a good option if you’re not already acclimatized to the high altitude and want to save your legs by doing minimal hiking.

No matter what time of year, it is recommended to carry warm clothing as it gets cold toward the mountain top.

7. Ollantaytambo

The town of  Ollantaytambo , located just an hour and a half northwest of Cusco, is small in size but is as essential a part of the Sacred Valley as it was in the era of the Incas. Home to some of the most impressive and extensive Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley, it’s also a contender for one of the best day trips from Cusco for those who love history and culture. 

The fortress at Ollantaytambo was once an important Inca stronghold against the Spanish conquistadors. Now visitors can take in the extensive ruins of the temple and fortress that made Ollantaytambo such an essential site. Highlights of the ruins include the Wall of Six Monoliths, a towering wall with stones so massive and smooth you can’t help but marvel at how they were moved here.

There is much more to see and do here than just visiting the famous ruins. Add an excursion to the ruins of Pinkuylluna to your Ollantaytambo trip as well. These Inca granaries sit on a hillside above the city. While reaching them requires a 30-45 minute steep climb, they’re much less visited than Ollantaytambo’s main ruins and are free to visit. 

Afterwards, plan to visit the Awamaki store. This non-profit works with weaving cooperatives of indigenous women and markets their creations internationally to bring sustainable income to local communities. You’ll find lovely-crafted textiles, perfect for taking home as a thoughtful souvenir.

8. Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain

If you’re looking for a Cusco day trip without crowds, then you should visit Palccoyo .  It’s one of Peru’s famous ‘rainbow mountains’ (or cerros colorados), but it is one that is only rarely visited.  Most visitors head to the more famous and well-known Vinicunca – so the lack of crowds is a good reason to head to Palccoyo instead.

Peru’s rainbow mountains get their colour from the natural minerals here – there’s red from iron, green from phyllites, and yellow from Sulphur for starters.  Whichever rainbow mountain you opt to visit from Cusco, the views are stunning, the scenery glorious – and the air a little thin.  Vinicunca is located at 5,200 meters above sea level, and Palccoyo is 300 meters lower in altitude.

Palccoyo makes a great day trip from Cusco, as even though it’s a 3.5-hour drive from Cusco, you can get to see the rainbow mountains with just about 30 minutes of hiking, and without crowds.  Drivers will accompany you to the best points for photography and most group tours to Palccoyo also include lunch on your return.  There are rarely people here, so you’ll have the mountains to yourself.  The last 30 minutes of driving are stunning – and other-worldly.  

Wear layers and bring plenty of water to hydrate and enjoy this incredible place!

9. Pikillacta

Pikillacta is an unusual archaeological site that is easily reached from Cusco. It’s about 20 km east of the city and is well off the beaten tourist trail which means you may have the place to yourself when you visit.

Dating to around 800 A.D.  Pikillacta  is an ancient settlement of Wari origin. The Incas later took over, but the structures and layout give a fascinating insight into the mysterious Wari culture. Little is known about this civilisation and the site is still being excavated. You might even get to see some of the archaeologists at work while you stroll around the complex.

The city sprawls across the valley, and you can walk along the old roads and take in some of the dwellings and buildings – there are over 700! A couple of rare dinosaur skeletons have been found during the excavation work, and you can see them on display in the small on-site museum.

To really make the most of your visit it’s best to come with a Pikillacta tour guide , who can accompany you from Cusco. You may need to hire a car and driver, as public transport options are limited. You can also stop at the Tipon archaeological park along the way to Pikillacta.

Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Where is Cusco, Peru?

Cusco is in the southeastern part of Peru, high in the Andes mountains. A one-hour flight from Lima , it is easy to get to, and yet with ancient origins, it feels worlds away, steeped in indigenous culture.

Why Cusco Makes a Good Base in the Sacred Valley

Situated next to the Sacred Valley, with its own airport, Cusco is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. With a wealth of Inca ruins, stunning mountain scenery, and traditional Andean villages, the Sacred Valley has there are tons of things to do in Cusco .

Cusco is a large enough base to offer a wide range of hotels, hostels, and restaurants, sure to fit any budget. You’ll find traditional Peruvian food, but also Thai, sushi, Indian, and other international dishes as well.

In just a short drive from the city, you can find some of the most famous Inca sites, such as Ollantaytambo, Morey, and Pisac. And Cusco itself has multiple sites in and around it like Qoricancha, Saqsaywaman, and the Q’enco Archaeological Complex.

In addition, Cusco is home to a vibrant indigenous culture, and there are plenty of opportunities to try traditional foods and experience local life.

We found Cusco to be a safe and friendly city, though we did experience a bus strike while we were there. Strikes are common in South America and are something to be aware of when you travel. We have some travel tips for South America to help you make the most of your family vacation in Peru.

The Best Day Trips from Cusco, Peru

There are many sites in the Sacred Valley you can visit from Cusco that are just an hour or two drive each way. There are so many options, you’ll need to choose a few, as it’s nearly impossible to fit them all into your Peruvian holiday!

Many of these sites can be explored on your own with a car and driver, or via a group tour. If you’d like to arrange transportation around the Sacred Valley but would rather not join an organized tour, we recommend using Taxidatum . You can schedule a driver for a full or half-day, with whichever stops you prefer. They do not provide guide services, only transportation.

There are two elements to a trip to Pisac- a trip to the Inca Ruins, and a visit to the town and markets of Pisac. Pisac is about a one-hour drive from Cusco.

Ruins of Pisac

The ruins at Pisac are a little different than others we’ve visited in Peru in that there are not truly prescribed paths. From the entrance, head up across the terraced fields then up and to the right. You’ll climb the hill, with the option to head to the right for a mirador, or continue to the top.

The mirador is a bit of a diversion- the path goes up and down a few times before ending at a shaded palapa that overlooks the valley below.

After viewing it, backtrack to where the paths intersect and head up the hill to the top point. From this small top area, you can head down into the residential houses. It’s from here that you can really wander through the ruins on your way down the hill, and back to the car park.

You can also walk from the ruins all the way to the town of Pisac, we didn’t do this, it’s an easy drive and a steep 4 km walk.

Once in town, check out Ulrike’s Café for lunch- we were drooling over their banana pancakes with real maple syrup but were too late in the day for them. Instead, the kids had oatmeal and yogurt with granola, while the adults chose lentil curry with rice and a Thai noodle salad.

Pisac is known for its market, which is largest on Sunday. From Ulrike’s, head uphill to Plaza Constitution, the main square. At the northeast corner of the square, on Mariscal Castilla, the handicraft market begins. There are tons of stalls with all sorts of garments, souvenirs, jewelry, and artwork.

You’ll also find kids and adults in traditional outfits strolling around with baby alpacas looking to take photos with your family. Pay what you wish, the expectation seems to be around 1 sol per person in the photo with you.

2. Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a small town located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, about an hour and a half from Cusco. The town is perhaps best known as the gateway to Machu Picchu but also has some of the most well-preserved Inca ruins, which sit atop the hills around it.

Visitors can explore the ruins, including an ancient temple and a massive stone staircase, or wander the streets of the town itself, which are lined with traditional stone houses and ancient water systems. The experience of visiting Ollantaytambo is very authentic, as there are fewer tourists in the town itself.

Ollantaytambo is also the launching point for visits to Macchu Picchu, whether by train or hiking the Inca Trail. The train runs from here to the base town of Aguas Calientes.

The ruins in the town itself are worth a visit, whether it’s for a single day or longer. We recommend spending more time here if you can, and wrote a guide to Ollantaytambo .

Day trips to Ollantaytambo are often combined with visits to Pisac, Chinchero, or Urubamba.

3. Chinchero

Chinchero is a small village high in the Andes between Ollantaytambo and Cusco. From the main square, you’ll see snow-capped mountains in the distance. The Inca believed this area was the birthplace of the rainbow. This town may have served as a country resort for the Inca leader Yupanqui.

On the main square is a colonial church that is covered in hand-painted designs. The church is built over the remains of an Inca structure. You can also continue across a field to the archaeological site of Chinchero.

Try to visit on a Sunday, when the main market stalls are full, and the church is open. You’ll need your Boleto General to enter the main square and see the church, as well as the ruins.

Chinchero is also known as a weaving center. Stop by Textil Quechua to see a free demonstration (please tip), of how alpaca wool is processed, spun, dyed, and woven. They also have several alpacas and guinea pigs on-site for the kids to visit. They have a lot of incredible handicrafts you can buy after the presentation.

We recommend having lunch at Merienda Restaurant , just outside the entrance to the main square. They have a small, simple menu of sandwiches, empanadas, and coffees- the food is fresh and good.

We found Chinchero to be a great town to stop in when moving between Ollantaytambo and Cusco. You can arrange this transfer vis Taxidatum , or take a full-day tour that combines a trip to both towns.

Moray is a fascinating archaeological site in Peru that is definitely worth a visit, and is often combined with a visit to the town center of Maras and the salt pools of Maras.

The site consists of a series of concentric terraces built by the Inca, within a natural bowl. The terraces are believed to have been used for agricultural experimental stations, as the Inca were able to create microclimates on each level. The Inca also brought in different soils to use at each terrace, so that they could study which crops thrived in the given conditions.

The nature of the rock below the soil also proved ideal for irrigation, as the water drains through, without collecting on the surface and flooding. The terraces are also notable for their circular shape, which is unusual for Inca architecture.

A visit to Moray is a great way to learn more about the Inca and their innovative engineering. You may also visit on a guided tour to help explain the significance of Moray.

5. Salt Pools of Maras

The Maras salt pools are beautiful man-made pools designed to take advantage of the natural minerals in the water. The pools are located in a picturesque spot near the town of Maras, where they continue to be an important part of the local culture.

The pools were first created thousands of years ago, when ancient people realized that the water in the area was rich in minerals. They began to harvest the salt from the water and used it for many different purposes, including cooking, preserving, healing, and later trade. Much of the salt is pink, due to its high concentration of Potassium.

Today, the pools continue to produce salt that is shipped to restaurants and stores all over the world. You may notice the white bags strewn about the site or stacked by the exit, that are used for storing the salt.

6. Saqsaywaman

Just up the hill from the Plaza de Armas, you can walk to this site, and visit it on your own, or view it as part of a larger guided tour. The walk is a short distance, but (like much in Cusco), uphill. We recommend visiting in the early morning to avoid the crowds.

You’ll need a Boleto Turistico to visit this site. If you come early and enter from below, you will need to already have a ticket as the gates will be open, but the kiosks will likely still be closed. My ticket was not checked until I got up to the main area. There are often alpacas grazing around the site, wandering among the stones and unphased by the visitors.

Originally built as a military stronghold to protect Cusco from attack, Saqsaywaman was the most important military base of the Inca Empire and was also used for religious ceremonies. It was once the largest Inca structure in the area.

After the Spanish invasion and conquest, many of the stones were removed from the site and used to construct buildings in Cusco. The stones that remain are still stunning and give you a sense of their massive scale and function.

Choose between a half-day tour of just Saqsaywaman or a full-day tour that dives deep into the smaller ruins in the area, combining Saqsaywaman, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.

7. Humantay Lake

This stunning turquoise lake is named after the nearby snow-capped mountains. To visit the lake, you’ll leave early in the morning, drive two hours to the starting point of your hike, then hike to this sacred Inca lake sitting at 13,700 feet in altitude.

The lake is the site of sacred ceremonies to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) that have been held here for over 1,000 years.

Due to the altitude, the minimum age for this tour is 8 years old.

8. Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain was virtually unknown a few years ago, and now is one of the most popular Cusco day trips. You’ll spend two hours hiking to reach the peak of the mountain to witness this Instagramable marvel.

This trip is not recommended for children or those over 55, due to the altitude, which makes the hike quite strenuous, as well as the long drive to get there. You can easily spend five hours each way driving to and from the base of the hike.

9. Machu Picchu

Many travelers come to Peru solely with the goal of visiting the ruins of Machu Picchu. While it makes for a long day trip, it is possible to visit Machu Picchu on a day trip from Cusco. Cusco is also where many treks to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail depart.

Visitors to Machu Picchu are limited to approximately three hours at the site, so while you’ll spend more time traveling from Cusco than from nearer towns, you won’t miss anything at the actual Inca site.

Whichever way you choose to visit, don’t miss walking around this magnificent site, one of the 7 New Wonders of the World, it should definitely be on your family bucket list !

Many people dream of taking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and arriving at the Sun Gate after a long 4- day trek over the mountains. However, the high altitude and length of this trek make it best for kids 10 and older.

If you have younger kids, or kids who may not be ready for the intensity of a four-day hike, consider the 1-day option! You can do a one-day Inca Trail hike that enters at the Sun Gate and then follows with a tour of the Machu Picchu site. This may be a great family alternative to the more intense, traditional Inca Trail Hike.
