Three cities in five days: A road trip through the Detroit Tigers’ future

ERIE, Pa. — More than a thousand miles away from Houston, where the Detroit Tigers are getting ready to face an icon from their past, some of the pieces of their future are on the field at UPMC Park.

Outfielder Daz Cameron , one of the centerpieces of the trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Astros last August, homers in the first inning. Beau Burrows , Detroit’s first-round pick in 2015, is on his way to a seven-inning, nine-strikeout performance. Alex Faedo , a first-round pick in 2017, is watching from the stands, waiting for his turn to throw seven scoreless the next day.

On a concourse wall, a full-sized cutout of Verlander still hangs across from a concession stand.

Over the course of a five-day, three-city road trip featuring four games, this is the moment that best encapsulates the state of the Tigers — an organization not far removed from its most recent era, but shifting its focus to the next one.

How far away that future is remains to be seen — as of now, the answers are staggered across several levels of the farm system.

This is a story about three of those levels, and the players waiting at each of them.

Stop 1: West Michigan Whitecaps (Single-A)

It’s a Thursday night, and two of the Tigers’ most recent draftees are in the lineup for a game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate.

Kody Clemens , a third-round pick and the son of Roger, is slotted in at second base for West Michigan. The previous night, he took a walk-off walk in the bottom of the 10th inning.

In center field is the talk of the draft class, at least in terms of social media buzz: Brock Deatherage . His Gulf Coast League debut, which featured three home runs, upped the ante. The grand slam in his second pro game did so again. His name put it all over the top.

Some fans have even printed shirts with “Death Rage” on them. Deatherage said he wants one.

My son wanted his own @B_Deatherage13 shirsey, so we're spreading the #DeathRage fever at the @wmwhitecaps . The surprise? This was not the only Death Rage shirsey being special ordered tonight. pic.twitter.com/xco3lkEZM2 — HookSlide (@HookSlide23) July 4, 2018

“It’s been my name my whole life,” Deatherage says. “I’m so used to it I never really think about it, I never really thought about dropping that ‘E’ and making it Death Rage, or trying to put it together with some heavy metal band or some superhero or something like that, how you see (it) all over Twitter and stuff.”

He will go 0-for-3 on this night, but sitting in the Whitecaps weight room afterward, you’d never know it.

The man behind the name is pretty fun, himself. He’s a former high school football player — a defensive back, to be specific — and a dairy farm boy before that.

He shares a story, remembering the time he got kicked trying to milk a cow.

“If you pull on the teet the wrong way, you’re going to get a reaction from the cow,” he says. “And I did, whenever I was a little kid, because there’s a way to do it to where it’s normal to them. The way you’re trying to resemble it is whenever a calf is drinking from the cow, and so whenever you do it the wrong way and just go start yanking on that thing, it’s going to give you a reaction. And I learned that the hard way and I got kicked in the stomach. … You learn after that that what you did was not right.”

Once you get the hang of it, he insists, it’s nothing.

He thinks growing up on a farm taught him the work ethic he needs to play baseball at a high level. When he wasn’t playing or going to school, he’d work on the farm. You build character that way, he figures.

The other thing Deatherage thinks people should know about him is that, even despite his professional power surge, he’s not actually a home-run hitter.

He hit one his freshman year at N.C. State , six as a sophomore and three as a junior before exploding for 14 as a senior. He credits his offseason work before his senior season for that burst, hitting every day before class at 8 or 9 in the morning.

“But it’s not my game,” he concedes. “That’s not really what I did. And then obviously going into the GCL and hitting three home runs in my first pro game, and the grand slam the next day, people were thinking maybe this guy hits a lot of home runs. Really, I don’t, it’s not what I try to do. It’s not really, when I go up there, my ultimate goal — especially hitting in the middle of the order, it’s still not part of my game. Speed’s my best attribute, by far.”

The best of his stories, though, is how he actually ended up a Tiger. The area scout who signed him, Taylor Black, was in his first year with Detroit. Before that? An assistant coach at N.C. State, where he coached Deatherage for three years.

Black and Deatherage had a good relationship, but they hadn’t had any serious talks leading up to the draft. So Deatherage was mostly goofing around when, after the first day of the draft, he shot his old coach a lighthearted text.

Hey, hope to hear from you tomorrow and become a Tiger.

I’m gonna try,  Black responded in good fun, fully aware of how many variables would be in play.

But sure enough, at the beginning of the ninth round, Black called Deatherage. The Tigers had the first pick in the 10th round. Would Brock be willing to sign there?

The answer was “most definitely.” Deatherage’s best guess is that the Phillies would have taken him if Detroit hadn’t.

Instead, he became Black’s first signing as a scout.

“It became a really good story,” Deatherage said. “Really good journey for both of us.”

It’s a big milestone for a scout to sign his first player, although it won’t be possible to grade for years down the line.

In West Michigan, Deatherage is still at the very beginning of his minor league journey.

It’s only going to get harder from here.

Stop 2: Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)

Nowhere on this trip was the minor league grind so clear as in Erie.

Last month, Tigers GM Al Avila gave a plainly worded critique of the facilities in Erie.

“Sometimes that worries me, because we’ve had some of the top talent — and we still do — in the organization, have come from big time programs, and they come through here,” he said, via the Erie Times-News . “And sometimes what worries me is the playing field or the facilities are not really up to the standards that you would like to see. … Obviously the playing surface is a very important thing sometimes, for the safety of the players you want it to be of good quality. Sometimes the batting cages, and in particular at the beginning of the season, it’s freezing cold, there’s no heat there. … The players will tell you, it’s a rough go.”

UPMC Park was originally home to a short-season team in the New York-Penn League, and the setup now does not necessarily match the talent sitting in its locker rooms. Erie is currently home to four of the Tigers’ top 10 prospects: Cameron, Burrows, Faedo and catcher Jake Rogers , who was also acquired in the Verlander trade. Another top pitcher, Franklin Perez , should return there soon after an injury.

Cameron arrived here from Class-A Advanced Lakeland about a month ago. After a scorching start (23-for-57), he caught a dose of reality in his next seven games, going 3-for-30. (He appears to be finding his form again since, hovering comfortably at .302.)

Just being in Erie, though, should boost his offensive numbers.

While there are exceptions — Isaac Paredes , a top infield prospect in the Tigers’ system, is belting home runs left and right in Lakeland — the Florida State League is often brutal to hit in.

“You got big fields, the fields are bigger,” Cameron said. “I think once you get away from that league — I mean, sometimes you hit balls in that league, and, it’s Florida, man. The balls don’t carry, the parks are big, so it’s tough to get into one. And you hit one to the warning track, like, ‘Dang, man, I could have sworn…’ You did all you could, and I was like, ‘Man, I know I’ve got a little more pop than that.’”

In Erie, that shouldn’t be as much of a problem, despite an increase in competition level. To hear it from Cameron, though, he’s just trying to get good swings on the ball. “If it goes out, it goes out,” he says.

That’s just one part of his ascension, anyway. He’ll have to adjust at every level. Personally, Cameron is working on having an aggressive mentality. He doesn’t want to be passive or take too many pitches.

A big part of his rise, though, will just be getting through the grind. He’s well along the highway to reaching his dream, but that can be more trying than it sounds.

Saturday afternoon, the day after a doubleheader, a pregame spread is laid out in the middle of the clubhouse, featuring Sun Chips, cold cuts, fruit, cheese and veggie trays. Players are responsible for paying dues to fund this spread — as well as a postgame meal — in order to fuel up their bodies.

On the long bus rides, the options can be even more limited.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get a good meal in,” Cameron said. “Sometimes you’re on the bus ride and you may only have an Arby’s or a Burger King or a gas station. That’s what I mean by sometimes it’s hard to get off and get that good grilled chicken from somewhere, good vegetables, but you know that’s all you can eat so you take it and you eat it and roll with it.

“It’s tough, man, but I mean, it’s the life. We love it. Being around the boys. It’s great.”

One thing any Tigers prospect would be ill-advised to consume is a featured item on the Erie concessions menu — the Cotton Candy Hot Dog. A creation of Tom Ando, the director of food and beverage, the Cotton Candy Hot Dog is a frank covered in Nerds and enclosed in a bun made of pink cotton candy. It sells for $5.50, and, yes, of course I bought one.

detroit tigers road trip

Don’t try this at home. (Allison Farrand/Special to The Athletic)

The best I can say about it is this: I don’t regret the bites (plural!) I took, but I will live perfectly happy never taking another.

The Nerds are essential to the thing. I’m not the world’s biggest hot dog guy, and at one point I considered substituting a kielbasa. In hindsight, the style of sausage wasn’t the issue here.

Instead, it’s the disconcerting difference in texture and temperature between the hot dog and the candy. I’m not sure if foods as cool and crunchy as candy should be eaten in the same bite as something as warm and juicy as a hot dog. But, I did voluntarily take more than one bite, and the Nerds really do cleanse the palate. Again, no regrets.

That hot dog is the most eventful part of Game 1 in Erie, with the SeaWolves taking a 4-2 loss and Rogers, Cameron and shortstop Sergio Alcantara combining to go 6-for-12 — with six singles. The story of the game is stranded runners.

The next day, though, includes plenty of intrigue. Around the Tigers’ world, the Sunday buzz is all about Verlander’s impending start against his former team, and with good reason.

But up in Pennsylvania, Burrows commands the attention.

One of the top arms in the system, Burrows has been in Erie since early last June, which means a promotion may not be too far away for him. He’ll just need to get over the hump. Another top arm, Kyle Funkhouser , was recently promoted to Toledo after less than a season.

On this day, Burrows opens the game with three perfect innings and takes a no-hitter into the fifth. When he walks two straight hitters in the fourth, he works out of it and induces a double play. When he eventually gives up a solo shot to lead off the sixth, he responds by striking out the side.

Crucially, he has command of his off-speed pitches — something pitching coach Willie Blair said had been an Achilles’ heel for Burrows this year. Today, though, Burrows brings his secondary arsenal into the game and uses it effectively. He finishes the day with a line of 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 SO.

“That’s by far the best his off-speed breaking stuff has been,” Blair says afterward. “His changeup, he kind of struggled with today, but as far as curveball and slider, that was the best it’s been in a long time.”

Stop 3: Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

The first player in view, upon opening the Toledo locker room, is a familiar face.

Grayson Greiner has played 14 games in Detroit this season, sprinkled through the better part of two months with the big club. Now, he sits at a corner locker in Toledo. A packed suitcase stands next to him.

A couple seats down is the locker belonging to Artie Lewicki — a pitcher who has been a regular on the Detroit-Toledo shuttle. Across the room is Dixon Machado ’s spot; he was DFA’d not long before the All-Star break. Warwick Saupold is now in Toledo. So is Pete Kozma . Mike Gerber , too. All of these guys have had some taste of the big leagues this season, but right now they’re all back here, waiting on the doorstep.

And then there are those still waiting on that first shot. Christin Stewart is slotted in at right field for tonight’s game. Jacob Robson is opposite him in left. Funkhouser is on the hill for his first start at Triple-A.

This, above all, is the defining trait at Toledo — how close these players are to the big leagues. This mix of veterans and youngsters are all either trying to reach a lifelong dream, or get back to it.

The goal is the same as anywhere else in the minors, but here, Detroit is the very next call.

And most of the time, it takes more than one call to stick there.

“As you can see, I kind of live out of my suitcase,” Greiner says. “I just did my laundry, a lot of packing stuff up. I’ve only been up and down four times — up twice, down twice — but it’s tough. Finding living arrangements, I have a wife and son back home, so getting them up, getting them back, it kind of takes your mind off baseball for a little bit worrying about all that stuff, which isn’t necessarily a good thing, but it’s part of the life. Wouldn’t change it for the world.”

His wife, Madison, and his son, Hudson, are back in South Carolina. The amount he sees them is proportional to which level he’s at. When he’s in Detroit, they come up for homestands and then fly back home. When he’s in Toledo, though, he sleeps on an air mattress in the living room of an apartment he shares with Gerber and Stewart.

They’re at the ballpark most of the time anyway, Greiner figures, so luxury isn’t a necessity. The apartment is just a place to crash.

Aside from the sheer logistics of his living situation, Greiner feels more financially able to fly his family up to Detroit when he’s making a major league salary. He’s still on the 40-man roster in Toledo, which helps, but he feels the need to save when he’s here.

He’s not far removed from making $800 every two weeks.

Still, he says, the trips up to Detroit make it all worth it.

detroit tigers road trip

At the opposite end of the locker room is a player still relatively fresh out of Erie. Jacob Robson is tearing up the International League — entering Monday night, he’s hitting .436 in 14 games.

An eighth-round pick from 2016, Robson has spun through the system relatively quickly. He was in the Gulf Coast and New York-Penn leagues his draft year, spent 2017 between West Michigan and Lakeland, and now is on the cusp of the big leagues.

His power seems to have surged this season, as he has racked up 10 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A after totaling four combined the past two years. Still, it’s the average and on-base percentage that look most enticing. His numbers at individual stops have varied, but he’s working on his third straight pro season with a total OBP at or above .380 and a batting average over .290. That’ll catch some eyes.

“Getting promoted to a higher level, I think it makes you sharpen up a little bit,” he says. “You don’t really take things for granted as much — at least in my scenario, that’s what happened to me.”

Robson confesses he wasn’t expecting a promotion so soon, grateful as he is. If he had to guess, mental and physical sharpness probably played a role.

When he got the call-up, his Double-A coaches actually tried to prank him when giving him the news.

Robson didn’t want to give the specifics, but the gist was this — they were giving him a hard time, trying to rattle him, but he was onto them. The Double-A All-Star teams were about to be announced, and so Robson wondered if they were about to tell him he’d made the team.

The news was, in fact, much better.

On this night, however, Robson will be one of the many Mud Hens who don’t do much at the plate. Leonys Martin , here on a rehab assignment, is the only player to get a hit — and he does so on the very first at-bat of the game.

detroit tigers road trip

Right-handed pitching prospect Kyle Funkhouser made his Triple-A debut Monday for the Mud Hens. (Allison Farrand/Special to The Athletic)

Funkhouser’s debut would have been fine, if not for the fact that he walked five batters, including one that brought in a run. But bumps and jitters happen, and even though the Mud Hens are in a tight division race, development is the ultimate goal.

“I did just get here,” he says. “Obviously if I string a few good starts together then I might build up a little pressure, anticipation or whatever. But until that happens I’m here to work and try to give my team a chance to win.”

One player who has strung together more than a few good performances this year and not gotten the call-up? That would be Stewart. He has mashed 16 home runs and is getting on base at an above-.330 clip. The highest-rated hitter in Toledo, he’s the only one of his roommates who has yet to take a trip to Detroit this season.

His defense is the source of consistent questions, and he’s coming off a calf injury, but Stewart is one of the prospects Tigers fans seem most fascinated by. And it’s hard to fault them. Power sells.

Late after Monday’s game has finished, Stewart hasn’t yet returned to his locker. A couple of Mud Hens staffers think he’s watching the Home Run Derby — or maybe he’s just enjoying what appears to be a P.F. Chang’s feast, presumably brought by Martin.

Soon enough, though, Stewart enters the locker room. His Triple-A performance this year should assure him of a September call-up, if not something sooner. It’s been three years since the Tigers drafted him in the first (compensatory) round in 2015. And as the most accomplished hitter in the system yet to make his debut, that puts him in an interesting position to reflect on the minor league journey as a whole.

“When you first step out in that Florida heat, and you’re in the GCL, early in the morning waking up around 6 a.m. every day, about to get your day started, you’re like, ‘Wow, this is the minor leagues right here,’” Stewart says.

He has traversed the full farm system since then. He now finds himself on the precipice of completing one long journey and starting another. Even though he’s so close to the majors, he’s still on the outside looking in — just like Deatherage, Burrows, Cameron and the rest.

They’re all in different places, but one theme reverberates.

“Everybody’s working for the same goal,” Stewart says.

MLB: Cleveland Guardians at Los Angeles Angels

The Detroit Tigers struggled in the second leg of its six-game homestand last week to the Cincinnati Reds , who came into Comerica Park and took two of three from the good guys. However, the one win they did manage to grab gave them 67 on the year — one better than last season with 16 games remaining on the schedule.

For the year, the Motor City Kitties are 12 games under the .500 mark and 9.5 games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in the American League Central division; the Cleveland Guardians sit between them at eight games back. While the Tigers are well out of contention and a bit too buried to break even for the season, there are still plenty of reasons to play these games.

Detroit travels out west for its next 10 games starting in Los Angeles against the Angels of Anaheim on Friday night. After the trio faces L.A.’s American League representative, they will then take on the Dodgers for three and then travel up to Oakland to face the A’s for a quartet in the Bay Area.

For now, take a look at what is in store this weekend at Angel Stadium. Note the weird start time on Friday night — perhaps to accommodate Rosh Hashana — as well as Detroit’s TBD on Sunday.

Times (EDT): Friday : 9:38 p.m.; Saturday : 9:07 p.m.; Sunday : 4:07 p.m. Place: Angel Stadium, Anaheim, California SB Nation Site: Halos Heaven Media: Bally Sports Detroit , MLB.TV , Tigers Radio Network

Game 147 Pitching Matchup

Game 147 : LHP Tarik Skubal (5-3, 3.47 ERA) vs. RHP Griffin Canning (7-6, 4.34 ERA)

Skubal’s last outing was a gem – albeit an abbreviated one — tossing five frames of scoreless ball, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out nine. The 26-year-old’s peripherals are nothing but spectacular and his traditional numbers are pretty tidy as well. The lefty has reached the five-inning mark in his last seven-straight starts and eight of his 12 appearances.

Canning saw the Tigers back on July 25 in Detroit, earning a no-decision in the team win that day. The 27-year-old threw five frames of two-run ball allowing seven hits (one home run) and no walks while striking out eight. A fair share of his starts have similar numbers as the right-hander has been consistently solid this summer.

Game 148 Pitching Matchup

Game 148 : RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (1-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. LHP Tyler Anderson (6-6, 5.36 ERA)

Gipson-Long makes the second start of his major league career on Saturday following a delightfully effective debut against the Chicago White Sox last Sunday. Against Detroit’s ALC foes, the 25-year-old lasted five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out five to earn the win. Notching a K an inning while keeping runners off base is a sure recipe for success.

Anderson has not seen the Tigers yet this season but will finally get a chance on Saturday when he takes the mound for the Angels. The 33-year-old’s performance has fallen off a cliff this season after making an All-Star Game appearance in 2022, posting some of his worst numbers since his disastrous 2019 campaign. The southpaw’s inflated 1.48 WHIP suggests that Detroit can cause some trouble if they can get runners on base.

Game 149 Pitching Matchup

Game 149 : TBD vs. LHP Reid Detmers (3-10, 4.77 ERA)

Detmers, now in his third year in the big leagues, has been a serviceable option in the rotation but far from reliable. The 24-year-old has had a few ups and downs — many more downs — this summer ranging from 7 1 ⁄ 3 shutout innings to seven runs allowed in just 2 1 ⁄ 3 frames, which is quite a dynamic range between success and failure. The left-hander’s last time out was a quality start against the Seattle Mariners , giving up three runs on five hits (one home run) and no walks while striking out seven — and hitting a batter — in seven innings.

Series Outlook: Beat the Rally Monkey

This road trip is the one Tigers fans dread every season and Detroit faithful have also developed a serious ire for the Angles over the years as well. The good news is that AJ Hinch’s squad will not have to face Mike Trout or Shohei Ohtani — both of whom are out with injuries — and are facing the weaker part of the starting rotation. What does that mean? The Olde English D should prevail over the stupid Rally Monkey in this series, further salting the Angels’ festering wound.

Nick Castellanos takes you through grind of Tigers' road trip

detroit tigers road trip

It's hard for anyone outside of an MLB clubhouse to truly appreciate the grind of a 162-game schedule and the physical, mental and emotional toll it takes.

Detroit Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos took ESPN.com through a typical West Coast trip for a professional baseball player, and the results might surprise you.

As Castellanos detailed during the team's recent six-game jaunt in California, cataloging his daily bedtimes and wake-up calls, it's not the glamorous lifestyle one might expect with parties, nightclubs and lavish dinners on the road. Sleep is a scarce commodity during the season, and players take what they can get.

"I don't think anyone can understand it unless they've played the game, gone through a span of flying 30 times a year, showing up to batting practice every day, showing up to face a good pitcher every day," Castellanos said. "It's almost like a movie. You see a movie and think that's a really good movie and you don't think of the struggles to make that movie. You don't think about the actors and the directors and the screenwriters, who are filming at all these different locations at different hours, to make the movie what it is."

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus also offers a manager's perspective on the challenges of a road trip, and Dr. Meeta Singh, a Detroit-based doctor in sleep medicine who works with the Tigers, weighs in with her professional opinions.

Day 1: May 26

Team flew from Detroit to Oakland, landed at 4:53 p.m. local time (7:53 p.m. ET)

Crib Notes: Slept on the plane for about an hour. Went to sleep around 11:30 p.m. As late as I possibly could. And I was up at 7 a.m. No nap. But right now, for an hour, it'd be a great time.

"I probably feel more tired than usual, just because I'm not usually waking up at 7 o'clock for a 7 p.m. game," Castellanos said.

Skipper Says: Regarding how much time it takes for his players to get acclimated to the time change on a typical West Coast trip, Ausmus joked, "By the time you're ready to leave California, you're accustomed."

Doctor's Orders: Singh suggests incrementally preparing for the trip to the West Coast by gradually staying up later before departing (between 1 and 2 a.m. ET), and staying in bed longer in the mornings (around 11 a.m. ET). Singh also recommended players get plenty of rest on May 25.

Day 2: May 27

Day game at O.co Coliseum vs. Oakland Athletics (7 p.m. ET)

Crib Notes: Went to sleep between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., up by 7 a.m. First game since arriving in California, adjusting to time zone change.

"It is what it is. You just kind of put it in autopilot, you know? Do what you gotta do," Castellanos said.

Skipper Says: On one of the positives of traveling West, according to Ausmus: "It makes day games easier for you, though, because you're used to such a night game schedule back home. You have a day game [back home] and you get kinda tired in the morning. [A] day game here is closer to when you're kind of revving up."

Doctor's Orders: Once in California, Singh suggests going to bed between midnight and 2 a.m. local time, and sleeping in until between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. local time. Singh also recommends using darkened shades in the hotel rooms, as well as sleep masks and earplugs, if necessary.

Day 3: May 28

Day game at O.co Coliseum vs. Oakland Athletics (4 p.m. ET)

Crib Notes: Went to sleep at midnight. Up at 7:30 a.m.

Did he read and/or adhere to any of the sleep tips provided to adjust?

"I have a 2 -year-old," Castellanos said.

Checking in with his son, Liam, can also be a challenge on West Coast time. "Have to do it before the game and stuff because once 5 p.m. rolls around here, it's too late [back home]," Castellanos said.

Skipper Says: Ausmus remembers muddling through his worst night of sleep in the big leagues.

"I'll never forget, I had a game in St. Louis, [and] for whatever reason I could not fall asleep," Ausmus said. "I was wide awake. It was a day game the next day [and] I watched the clock turn to 9 a.m. I said, 'Well, I've got to get out of bed now.' I was literally lying there for hours, so I was up the whole night. The next day I was playing. [I] went out and caught. I don't know if we won or lost, but I got a hit or whatever. I was exhausted afterwards, but I was fine. It was funny because it was kind of a lesson. Because from that point on, anytime I didn't get enough sleep, I said, 'Well, I can get through one day. ... I'll be tired but I can get through it for one day."

Doctor's Orders: Singh says to avoid any light exposure prior to 7 a.m. local time. If a player wakes up early and is having trouble going back to sleep, he should avoid using electronics or exercising. Instead, Singh suggests practicing relaxation techniques (lay in bed and breathe deeply).

Day 4: May 29

Day game at O.co Coliseum vs. Oakland Athletics (4 p.m. ET); flight immediately after the game to Anaheim, California

Crib Notes: Went to sleep around midnight, up by 8 a.m. Listened to music on the plane with teammate Cameron Maybin , who created his own Pandora station. Listening to all sorts of music right now. Went on a big Mumford and Sons kick after attending a concert in Kansas City during an off day earlier this season.

"But I've been listening to Drake since his new album dropped," Castellanos said.

Skipper Says: Asked if people truly understand the physical and mental grind of a 162-game schedule, Ausmus said: "Unless you actually -- it's hard to appreciate unless you actually go through it."

Doctor's Orders: "The game itself, especially the evening games, there's stimulation," Singh said. "[Those games] stimulate parts of the brain, which makes winding down more difficult."

Day 5: May 30

Night game at Angel Stadium vs. Los Angeles Angels (9 p.m. ET)

Crib notes: Went to bed at midnight. Up at 8:30 a.m.

Does Castellanos get better sleep when he's on the road, because he's not sleeping under the same roof as a toddler?

"Yeah, I guess you could say that, but do you really get your best sleep when you're away from your family?" Castellanos asked.

Doctor's Orders: One thing that makes falling asleep different for pro athletes these days? The use of cellphones. "My recommendation is not to have a telephone next to you while sleeping," Singh said, as the light can keep the brain stimulated and engaged.

And if you're using a phone as an alarm clock, place it as far away from you as possible. Get up when the alarm goes off. "Don't hit snooze!" she added.

Day 6: May 31

Night game at Angel Stadium vs. Los Angeles Angels (10 p.m. ET)

Crib Notes: Went to bed at 1:30 a.m. Woke up at 9:45 a.m. Little later than usual, just because I had a friend in town from high school who is out in California and wanted to catch up.

Day 7: June 1

The Tigers play a day game in Anaheim and then fly to Detroit for a makeup game against the New York Yankees on what was originally scheduled to be an off day.

"It's only brutal if you make it brutal. [You] try to get as much sleep on the plane as you can, get home at 5 a.m., eat something, go back to bed, wake up around 2:30 or 3 p.m.," Castellanos said.

Skipper Says: Ausmus said you can't prepare players for that brutal turnaround. "Sleep as much as you can. There's really not much that you can do," said the manager.

Doctor's Orders: "You probably will not sleep as well; however, my recommendation is, by God, sleep on the plane!" Singh said. "It may not be the best sleep ever had, but some sleep is better than none."

Day 8: June 2

Night game at Comerica Park vs. New York Yankees; makeup game for weather postponement earlier in the season (7:40 p.m. ET)

Crib Notes: Slept almost the whole way on the plane. Got home at 6 a.m. Slept until 11 a.m. Got to the ballpark at 3:30 p.m.

How did Castellanos feel?

"Tired -- a little groggy -- but fine."

Skipper Says: "It's tough to explain because from the outside looking in, compared to how people normally travel, we take a bus from the stadium, to the plane, to a bus to the hotel, and our bags are brought to our room, so it's tough to complain about stuff like that," Ausmus said. "But when you do it for six months and you're constantly changing time zones and you're going to bed at 12 o'clock because you have a day game the next day, it can be extremely exhausting at times. When you have stretches of a bunch of night games in a row, it's a lot easier, but when you have the night-day game schedule and you're traveling on a plane for three hours, it can be tiring."

Doctor's Orders: "In general, traveling East is always more difficult than traveling West," Singh said. "There can be caveats, but it's always easier to go to bed later than earlier."

Detroit Tigers' mission? 'Keep playing clean' as 9-game road trip begins with Rays

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers took advantage of a fellow struggling team this weekend.

They swept the Baltimore Orioles.

"We need to keep the same vibe, the same energy in the clubhouse," third baseman Jeimer Candelario said. "We need to play ball the right way and play clean all the time."

The Tigers (12-23) opened the season at 9-23, but coming off three wins in a row at Comerica Park, the team entered a nine-game road trip on Monday with its most momentum yet this season.

JEFF SEIDEL: Tigers continue to keep us guessing. But here are 10 reasons to remain optimistic

For the road trip, the Tigers take on the Tampa Bay Rays (Monday-Wednesday), Cleveland Guardians (Friday-Sunday) and Minnesota Twins (May 23-25). Those teams boast a combined .553 winning percentage.

"If I'm going to preach to not react to a loss," Hinch said, "I gotta preach to not react to a win I just want us to keep playing clean, especially against this team. The Rays, no secret as to why they've been good the last few years."

Detroit entered Monday eight games behind Minnesota for first place in the American League Central. Here's how the division stacks up: Twins (20-15), Chicago White Sox (16-17), Guardians (16-17), Royals (12-20), Tigers (12-23).

"We looked at that part of our schedule, with the A's series and the Orioles series, as a spot where we could propel ourselves forward," catcher Tucker Barnhart said. "Before the season started, you would've looked at it that way. We talked about it being a series that could jumpstart us into a long trip against some good teams."

FIRST MLB SAVE: How Tigers reliever Will Vest put out a fire: 'I'm just trying to get to strike 2'

TOP PROSPECT: Here's when Riley Greene (broken foot) could play in first rehab game

The Tigers dropped four of five games to the Oakland Athletics, before taking all three against the Orioles.

The offense woke up, hitting .284 with four home runs and an .830 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. The pitching allowed just three runs and 11 walks with 30 strikeouts across the 27 innings.

Entering the O's series, the Tigers' offense had a .220 average, 12 homers and a .591 OPS in 32 games.

"It was good, ultimately because of the way we played, not necessarily the results," Barnhart said. "We played really clean. Starting pitching. Bullpen guys. The at-bats were good. We scored runs. We played good defense. In the bigger picture, it was more of how we played versus what the actual results were."

The Tigers are riding a three-game streak of clean baseball.

That needs to follow against the Rays, the second-best team in the AL East with a 21-14 record. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash takes an aggressive and fundamental approach in his game plans, and his players respond by applying pressure on the bases and consistently putting the ball in play.

"For us to play clean, we will have a better opportunity to be in a position to win," Hinch said. "If we walk them too much, if we give them extra bases, if we don't play good defense, if we don't control the running game, it's a dangerous series against a team that's used to playing in October."

Another chance for Daz Cameron

For the third time this season, outfielder Daz Cameron has been called up to the big leagues. He replaced outfielder Victor Reyes, whom the Tigers placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right groin strain.

In 24 games for Triple-A Toledo, Cameron has a .260 batting average with two home runs, 15 RBIs, six walks and 31 strikeouts. The 25-year-old finished Sunday's game 4-for-5 with one double, one home run and four RBIs.

He was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

"I'm feeling good," Cameron said. "I'm aware and capable of what I can bring to the ballclub. Whatever the coach needs me to do, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to come in and be me."

TIGERS NEWSLETTER: Move over, Must-See J.V., here comes Tarik Terrific

Cameron is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Rays. He will receive most of his playing time in right and center field. The Tigers hope to take advantage of his speed on the bases.

For the Tigers, Cameron is 0-for-5 with one walk, three strikeouts and one stolen base in two games this season. He is a career .188 hitter across 54 games in parts of three MLB seasons.

"All he's asked for is an opportunity, and here is yet another one," Hinch said. "He was performing well at the right time. His overall numbers were not indicative of the type of player he could be, but the last week, he's been good. He's got skills. He's got tools."

A productive 15-game stretch for the Mud Hens helped Cameron earn the promotion in Reyes' absence. He hit .311 (19-for-61) with three doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs, two walks and 17 strikeouts during that span.

"That's just part of the game," Cameron said of bouncing between the Tigers and Mud Hens. "You have to embrace and be willing to be a better person, man and player from that, and take everything for what it is, soak it in and be ready to go."

Also in Toledo, outfielder Akil Baddoo is dealing with an oblique injury.

Matt Manning's next start

Right-hander Matt Manning (right shoulder inflammation) will make his third rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Toledo in Indianapolis. He tossed 57 pitches across 3⅔ innings in his last outing.

This time, the Tigers want him to complete five innings on 70-80 pitches.

After Wednesday's outing, the 24-year-old is expected to join the Tigers' rotation. If he stays on a five-day schedule, Manning would be lined up to start May 23 against the Twins at Target Field.

He has a 1.35 ERA with two walks and eight strikeouts in 6⅔ innings for the Mud Hens. He appeared in two games for the Tigers before landing on the injured list April 20.

Familiar faces at the Trop

The Tigers aren't holding any big meetings, but general manager Al Avila invited members of the organization — specifically those stationed in Lakeland, Florida — to Tropicana Field.

Many rehabbing players will show up in St. Petersburg: Casey Mize (right elbow sprain), Jake Rogers (Tommy John surgery), Spencer Turnbull (Tommy John surgery), Tyler Alexander (left elbow sprain), Jose Cisnero (right shoulder strain) and Kyle Funkhouser (right shoulder strain).

"They're all coming," Hinch said. "They're on our team. They're a part of this. Sometimes when you're down in Lakeland for too long, you kind of feel disconnected from the major league team. It's nice to have those guys here, see the team and continue their rehab."

Right-hander Michael Pineda landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right middle finger fracture. He has an appointment scheduled for Monday night with Dr. Douglas Carlan, the hand and wrist consultant for the Rays, Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Carlan operates out of St. Petersburg.

The Tigers also brought their rehab coordinators to Tropicana Field, along with vice president of player development Ryan Garko, director of pitching Gabe Ribas and director of coaching and catching Ryan Sienko.

"It's fun to have everybody around," Hinch said.

Detroit Tigers lose a road trip with recent lockout cancellations

The Detroit Tigers , like all of the Major League Baseball teams, are not going to be back on the field anytime soon. After a recent deadline was missed in the negotiations between the owners and the players, cancellations will come to the 2022 season.

The Detroit Tigers were slated to open the season on a seven-game road trip. They were going to head to Seattle for a four-game set with the Seattle Mariners, followed by a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics.

These seven games will now be scrapped, and the Tigers will begin their season on April 8th against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park. However, this is contingent on there being no more cancellations, and there is a deal reached between the two sides.

It seems that this contingency is asking a lot and will be a tough ask from both the owners and the players. It’s hard to think after the way negotiations have been going that the two sides will be able to pick things up and come to a deal quickly.

Detroit Tigers lose seven games to lockout cancellations.

It’s one of the last things the Tigers faithful wanted to see, but with the cancellation official and no longer a “threat,” it seems the wait for pro baseball is going to continue, likely beyond April 8th for Tigers baseball.

But, there are places to turn for fans who are enraged with this work stoppage. The Tigers mini-camp has been providing exciting looks into the future of the Tigers, and these players will likely head to the minor-league ranks as time goes on.

The Toledo Mud Hens will begin their season on April 5th, unaffected by the lockout. So Tigers fans can watch the next wave of Tigers talent get back on the field in a few short weeks.

Beyond that, here’s a selfish plug of the Mid-American Conference. College baseball is an electric environment and incredibly fun to watch. While there are conferences like the SEC and Big-10 to turn to, the Mid-American Conference also provides quality baseball.

Fans really looking for that baseball fix can tune in to see Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Western Michigan fight to get into a regional. Two fan-favorite teams in Michigan and Michigan State are looking to make a splash in the Big-10 conference.

There’s plenty of baseball around to be consumed. While the owners and players continue to play the negotiating game with one another and continue this lockout, turn to the minor leagues, or turn to the college game.

Mead hits 1st homer of the season and Rays beat Tigers 7-5 to avoid the 3-game sweep

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla, — Curtis Mead hit his first home run of the season and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 on Wednesay night to avoid a three-game sweep.

Ben Rortvedt collected his second RBI of the game with a single and scored on Mead’s two-run drive off Will Vest (1-1) that put the Rays ahead for good in the sixth inning. It was Mead’s first homer since Sept. 22.

Tampa Bay had lost three in row and five of seven.

“Awesome, for sure,” Rortvedt said. “Especially losing the first two games, our backs are against the wall. Really trying to come out with a win as we go into the off day. This is huge for us.”

The Tigers completed a six-game trip at 4-2 and are 10-4 on the road this season.

‘Well, the series win is nice,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said, “We’re’re happy with the road trip. It doesn’t end well. But keeping things in perspective, we’re doing some good things and we’re winning series, which is key. You want to get greedy when you have the chance to sweep. They came up bigger in the big moments and won the game.”

After trailing by three early, Detroit took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on Buddy Kennedy’s run-scoring single and Javier Báez’s 600th career RBI that came on a double against Chris Devenski (1-1).

Jason Adam went two perfect innings before Garrett Cleavinger worked the ninth to get his second save in as many chances.

“That’s the beauty of baseball, you have a rough night or whatever you get to go back out,” Adam said. “I’d take this team over any other team in the league over the long run.”

Mark Canha picked up his fourth and fifth RBIs in the series with a fifth-inning single off former Tigers’ left-hander Tyler Alexander that got the Tigers within 4-3.

Alexander allowed two runs and three hits in four innngs. He went 11-23 in 120 games, including 43 starts, with the Tigers from 2019-23.

“I’ve stayed away from him this series because I don’t want to like him this series,” Hinch said with a smile before the game. “I’ll love him tomorrow.”

Canha’s two-out hit came after right fielder Amed Rosario grabbed Riley Greene’s drive to the warning track and held onto the ball after colliding with center fielder Randy Arozarena.

Rortvedt had an RBI double in a three-run third off Jack Flaherty as the Rays took a 4-1 lead. Flaherty gave up four runs and seven hits over five innings.

Arozarena, mired in a 9 for 77 (.117) slide in April entering the game, pulled Tampa Bay even at 1 with his first homer since March 31 in the first inning. The 2023 All-Star has three homers this season and is hitting .158 after going 1 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Detroit Tigers bring 'increased competitiveness' into six-game road trip vs. winning teams

detroit tigers road trip

BALTIMORE — The Detroit Tigers , one of the hottest teams in baseball, nearly carried a six-game winning streak into their two-city, six-game road trip against the Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers.

The winning streak, though, stopped at five games in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. The Tigers, despite late-inning home runs from Spencer Torkelson and Zach McKinstry, stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth inning.

"We're playing better," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after Wednesday's loss. "We're playing clean baseball. That's important for us to win today's game. ... We walked guys today, which is the story of the game. We put ourselves in a tough position. Other than that, our competitiveness has certainly increased in the last few games."

JEFF SEIDEL: Tigers' recent success is no bark in the park. Or is it?

MORE FROM SEIDEL: Tigers' winning streak carries a new mojo: 'We show up expecting to win'

The winning, and the clean product on the field, started in Toronto with a 3-1 victory against the Blue Jays on April 13, when Javier Báez was benched for mental mistakes before the third inning.

The benching sent a message to the entire team.

A winning streak evolved thanks to back-to-back walk-off wins over the San Francisco Giants on Friday and Saturday at Comerica Park. The series finale was postponed Sunday (after a five-hour delay) due to inclement weather . It has been rescheduled for 1:10 p.m. July 24.

Another postponement occurred Monday, then the Tigers won back-to-back games in Tuesday's doubleheader against the Guardians.

"Vibes are super high," Riley Greene said Sunday. "We're playing clean baseball. We just got to keep it going. That's really the end goal, just to build off the momentum, bring it into the next day, keep the energy high and grind."

The Tigers played 22 innings Friday and Saturday against the Giants. Nick Maton launched a walk-off home run in Friday's 7-5 win, while Miguel Cabrera contributed a pinch-hit walk-off single in Saturday's 7-6 win.

"Bodies aren't feeling good around here, I can tell you that," Greene continued, speaking in front of his locker in the clubhouse Sunday. "It's just kinda who's mentally stronger, who wants it more?"

During the six-game stretch, the Tigers hit .254 (eighth in MLB) with a .311 on-base percentage (17th) and .413 slugging percentage (ninth). They ranked 23rd with a 7.2% walk rate and 10th with a 21.6% strikeout rate. That means the Tigers' offense struggled to draw walks but limited strikeouts.

The bullpen was the biggest highlight with an MLB-leading 1.08 ERA across 25 innings in the six-game stretch. The relievers, despite a lack of strikeouts, refused to give away free passes; seven of 93 batters reached safely from walks. Several high-leverage relievers, such as Alex Lange and José Cisnero, bounced back from poor outings, while Jason Foley continued a strong start to the season.

AT HIS BEST: Eduardo Rodriguez's best start as a Tiger sets an example for starting rotation

AIRING IT OUT: Riley Greene leads Tigers in hits, strikeouts. Here's what to make of his 2023

Most importantly, the Tigers showed resiliency in late-game situations through game-winning hits from Maton, Cabrera and Kerry Carpenter. Even in Wednesday's loss, the Tigers' first two batters — Carpenter (single) and Akil Baddoo (single) — reached safely against Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth inning.

The next three batters — Torkelson, Tyler Nevin and Eric Haase — were retired to end the game, but all three players put the ball in play. They didn't give away any outs, and if Nevin's shallow fly ball (ending an 11-pitch battle) would have dropped in, the Tigers could have extended the winning streak to six games.

But the Tigers (7-10 record) learned something about themselves over the past week and will try to carry the momentum in a pair of three-game series against the Orioles (11-7) and Brewers (14-5).

"A lot of confidence," Torkelson said Wednesday, after going 2-for-3 with one walk, one double, one home run. "I think this team has a lot of swag and a lot of really good players. I think it's clicking, and I really like where we're at."

No timeline for Austin Meadows yet

The Tigers placed outfielder Austin Meadows on the 10-day injured list on April 12, meaning he would be eligible to return Saturday. He has been around Comerica Park for workouts and games throughout the past week but didn't join the Tigers for the six-game road trip.

Hinch said the Tigers don't plan to transfer Meadows to the 60-day injured list.

Still, it's unclear when he could return to games.

"We've given him space," Hinch said. "We've also given him support. We continue to wait for a definitive program on what activity level he's going to be able to do. We're in touch with him and his mental group, our medical group, and we continue to support him. We'll continue to do so until, hopefully, he feels better enough to get back in the rhythm of the game and get back more active."

MORE ON MEADOWS: Tigers' Austin Meadows steps away from team again due to mental health struggles

Meadows played in six of the Tigers' first seven games this season, hitting .238 with zero walks and three strikeouts across 21 plate appearances. He also missed games for mental health struggles last season.

The 27-year-old has completed some baseball activities in his workouts.

"He's done a little bit of stuff, not a lot," Hinch said. "Nothing that would make him able to play at the drop of a hat. There's going to be a process in place, and we haven't come to any conclusions yet."

Prospect starts rehab assignment

Catcher Dillon Dingler , who underwent a right knee meniscectomy (the removal of a torn meniscus) in mid-March, has been assigned to Low-A Lakeland to begin a rehab assignment.

The 24-year-old, who hasn't played above Double-A Erie, was selected No. 38 overall by the Tigers in the 2020 draft. He hit .238 with 14 home runs, 45 walks and 143 strikeouts in 107 games for the SeaWolves last season.

COMING BACK FROM TJ: Tigers' Spencer Turnbull learning 'different type of patience' this season

A BETTER BÁEZ: Javier Báez is proving he can help Tigers win. Can he do it consistently?

Double-A Erie third baseman Colt Keith went 3-for-3 with two walks in Thursday's loss. The 21-year-old is hitting .304 with one home run, six walks and nine strikeouts in 11 games for the SeaWolves.

Right-hander Wilmer Flores has a 14.04 ERA with eight walks and 10 strikeouts in 8⅓ innings across three starts for Double-A Erie. Righty Ty Madden , also pitching for the SeaWolves, has a 1.80 ERA with four walks and 13 strikeouts in five innings across two starts.

Third baseman Justyn-Henry Malloy is dominating the competition in Triple-A Toledo, hitting .379 with two homers, 19 walks and 14 strikeouts in 17 games. The 23-year-old has an insane .544 on-base percentage.

Right-hander Reese Olson , however, isn't dominating the Triple-A level, with a 15.83 ERA, seven walks and 15 strikeouts in 9⅔ innings across four starts. The 23-year-old struggles to get swings and misses inside the strike zone with his fastball.

Sunday's starter

Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will start Sunday against the Orioles, while lefty Matthew Boyd will start Monday against the Brewers. Both pitchers started Tuesday in the doubleheader against the Guardians.

Right-hander Michael Lorenzen started Friday against the Orioles. Lefty Joey Wentz is scheduled to start Saturday.

On deck: Tigers open three-game series against Royals at Comerica Park

The NFL Draft won't be the only game in town this weekend.

After back-to-back series on the road, the Detroit Tigers return to Comerica Park for a six-game homestand, starting with a three-game series with the American League Central rival Kansas City Royals. The series begins Friday, and concludes Sunday.

The Royals are off to a 15-10 start, good for second in the AL Central behind the front-running Cleveland Guardians (17-7). The Tigers (14-11), coming off taking two of three from the Tampa Bay Rays, are just a game back of the Royals, in third place.

Here's a brief look at the series with the Royals.

On deck: Kansas City Royals

▶  Series: Three games at Comerica Park, Detroit

▶  First pitch: Friday — 1:10 p.m.; Saturday — 6:10 p.m.; Sunday — 1:40 p.m.

▶  TV/radio: All three games on Bally Sports Detroit/97.1 FM

▶  Probables: Friday — RHP Seth Lugo, tentative (3-1, 2.03) vs. RHP Reese Olson (0-3, 3.80); Saturday — RHP Brady Singer, tentative (2-1, 2.76) vs. RHP Casey Mize (1-0, 2.95); Sunday — RHP Michael Wacha, tentative (1-2, 3.81) vs. LHP Tarik Skubal (3-0, 1.82).

Scouting report

▶  Lugo, Royals: He’d given up just three runs over four starts before the Orioles got him four runs in 5.1 innings last time out. He brings eight different pitches to the table, none of them get a lot of swing-and-miss (11% strikeout rate), but they don’t usually foster hard contact, either. So far this year, right-handed hitters are doing most of the damage (.811 OPS vs. .626 by lefties). Part of the reason, righties are 6 for 15 off his sinker and 5 for 10 off his slurve, two of his favored weapons against righties.

▶  Olson, Tigers: Too many numbers trending in the wrong direction right now: Hard-hit rate up (45%), strikeout rate down (18.8%), walk rate up (8.3%), percentage of pitches in the strike zone down (41.8%). Opponents are hitting .280/.354/.354 with a .708 OPS in four starts. On a positive note, he’s only allowed six extra-base hits, all doubles. He’s got a 52% ground ball rate, but a lot of them are finding holes.
