Waited 3 hours. Fasted for 5 days in order to successfully queue and secure front row standing. The extent of physical torture I was forced to endure will not be stated for religious reasons (nah im kidding.i am so done that I will share the shameful fact that I had to stimulate myself as to not urinate over my Dunlop wellies.) My sweet George Harrison didn't even play. Do not recommend. Hare Hare Krishna.

Concert for George 20th Anniversary Screening

10 November 2022

dhani harrison tour 2022

A very special one-night-only screening of  Concert for George will be taking place on  November 29  in selected theaters across the world ( click here for tickets and listings ). Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the momentous 2002 concert, the theatrical event will celebrate the life and music of  George Harrison .   First released in 2003, the  GRAMMY®-winning concert film  features performances by  Eric Clapton ,  Paul McCartney ,  Tom Petty ,  Ravi Shankar  and  Ringo Starr  among many others. Fans will now have the opportunity to  re-experience the concert in immersiveDolby Atmos® Audio, newly remastered by GRAMMY-winning engineer Paul Hicks . The anniversary screenings will also feature  a brand-new introduction by Olivia and Dhani Harrison .

Hicks also brought his artistry to the film’s accompanying  Concert for George  album , which is available in  Dolby Atmos®, starting today, on   digital platforms  ( click here to listen ). Certified  8x Platinum  by the RIAA ,  the acclaimed 27-track album can also be found in a variety of existing physical formats, including a  180-gram 4-LP box set ,  2-CD/2-DVD  and  2-CD/2-Blu-Ray  packs, and a  2-CD  package ( click here to order ).

On November 29, 2001, the world lost one of its greatest musical talents,  George Harrison . Rising to meteoric fame with  the Beatles , the British artist wrote some of the 20th century’s most enduring hits, including  “Here Comes the Sun , ” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”  and  “Something . ”  A deeply introspective being, Harrison wove his love of Indian culture into his work and was instrumental in introducing the country’s rich musical traditions to the West.

Following the breakup of the Beatles, the breadth of Harrison’s work grew exponentially, as he embarked on a highly successful solo career, releasing such universally beloved albums as  All Things Must Pass  (1970) ,  Living in the Material World  (1973)   and  Dark Horse  (1974) .   In the late ’80s, meanwhile, Harrison found a new generation of fans with his No.1 hit  “Got My Mind Set on You , ”  while he formed the popular supergroup  Traveling Wilburys , alongside Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. When Harrison lost his battle with cancer at the age of 58, he left behind an inimitable body of work and a hugely influential musical legacy.

Exactly one year after his death, on  November 29, 2002 , Harrison’s life and music were celebrated during a historic evening at London’s  Royal Albert Hall . Organized by the late artist’s longtime friend and collaborator  Eric Clapton  and his widow,  Olivia Harrison ,  Concert for George  brought together a star-studded line-up of talent to perform highlights from Harrison’s four-decade-long career plus his favorite music. Among the participants were  Gary Brooker ,  Joe Brown ,  Dhani Harrison ,  Jools Holland ,  Jeff Lynne ,  Paul McCartney ,  Ringo Starr ,  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ,  Billy Preston , members of  Monty Python ,  Ravi and Anoushka Shankar , and  Clapton , who also served as the evening’s musical director.

“A long time ago, imagining his ideal gig, George had said, ‘I could do something like that someday… [it’s] the perfect idea… I mean if I had a “special” I would like to have a few people who mean something to me.’ And he was right, he was so prescient and so right. It went from the sublime Ravi & Anoushka Shankar Orchestra to the ludicrous Monty Python. The most deep moving songs written by George, whose meanings were potentised by his absence, played with heart and soul by a core group of friends. It is a joy to be able to relive that incredible evening again, on a big screen, 20 years on.”

Olivia Harrison, November 2022

“20 years ago, I stood on stage beside my father’s dearest friends and celebrated his life and music. It was one of the most beautiful things we could’ve done on that day to mark his passing. There was a lot of love involved in that show, which has been preserved in this  Concert for George  film. I hope you dig it.”

The River Flows At Its Own Speed: An Interview With Dhani Harrison

Dhani Harrison discusses self-reflection, glass-shattering gigs, Nostradamus powers, AI de-mixing, and his sophomore record ‘INNERSTANDING’ with Atwood Magazine’s Aidan Moyer.

I love that Superman book you’ve got there, I’ve got the same one! Weighs a ton.

D hani Harrison catches me off guard.

I’ve been prepped for this conversation from all angles: A deep-dive into his discography, beginning with theNewno2 in 2006, through the side trio Fistful of Mercy and his 2017 solo debut, In//Parallel ; a comprehensive viewing of every film he’s soundtracked, including the Ben Kingsley vehicle “Learning to Drive” and a documentary on installation artist Shepard Fairey; two months of listening to his latest project, INNERSTANDING (one of Atwood Magazine ‘s Best Albums of the Year) on a cycle.

INNERSTANDING - Dhani Harrison

Yet as we Zoom from his home in rural England, we compare notes on the weather-“cold and damp” in Philly, too-and shoot the breeze about the Superman memorabilia in my studio. We both appreciate the classic version of the character, played by Christopher Reeve – as it turns out, an old friend of the Harrisons.

“I roomed with his son, Matt, in university. We both look a lot like our dads. Chris was a major inspiration after his accident, he became like Professor X and even starred in a remake of Rear Window.”

Henry Cavill, we agree, is far too bulky for Clark Kent, “but we both collect Warhammer models! I just collected them to paint ‘em.”

Atwood Magazine's 2023 Albums of the Year

This charming diversion is the perfect primer for our half-hour discussion on his sophomore record..

Harrison occasionally goes on enthused tangents but never wavers in his earnestness, offering humor, passion and insight informed by decades honing his craft and spirituality. It is this sensibility that permeates the sonic palette of INNERSTANDING , a record that is at once an intimate personal meditation and a cascade of synths and pleas for deliverance from ‘megatech and the coroner.’

Harrison teams with Blur’s Graham Coxon, The Duke Spirit’s Leila Moss, and frequent collaborator Mereki to round out his moody, infectious choruses that take the form of mantras. Recurring animals record – ’Downtown Tigers’ and ‘Wolves Around the City,’ and nautical motifs on ‘Ahoy There’ dialogue with the previous record to continue a tapestry Dhani Harrison has been weaving for decades, since collaborating with his father George on the masterpiece, “ Brainwashed .”

What follows is our mostly unabridged and illustrated conversation, touching on his early career, the importance of album art, AI de-mixing, and the perils of a technocratic reality.

A CONVERSATION WITH DHANI HARRISON

INNERSTANDING - Dhani Harrison

Dhani Harrison: Ah, nice.

Dhani Harrison: No, I think I was trying to get my in-ear monitors working or something. There was feedback in my ears or something. This was the first gig of the tour. So I think, I think we had a, it was quite a wild gig because I couldn’t really hear what was going on.

Dhani Harrison © Aidan Moyer

Dhani Harrison: We did a show in Seattle for the record showcase. You get all the big buyers and those online Point-Of-Sales people. People come out and they all have their own music division, and they come to the show. And we did this show on a boat in Seattle. It was moored in the lake, this big boat that’s like a party boat. And I remember just playing, er…We were playing something like #Waronfalse. And I just heard the sound of just breaking glass! [ laughs ] There was a really nice posh, Victorian bar with all the glassware, and then glasses hanging in a little rack kind of thing. And they just rattled…I just played the guitar solo. And it just rattled all the glasses. And the bartender was going like this [ ducks ] and they were just falling off the shelves. “Uhh, sorry!” It was… When you say things are rattling, that was quite noisy. I’ve got that Twin Reverb amp, which is just so loud. Fender!

Dhani Harrison: Yeah, I think I wrote that one on like a Fender Rhodes keyboard. And so out there somewhere there’s a Fender Rhodes just ‘me and a keyboard’ version of it. I did that one the same time as I was doing Motorways, which was this sort of random single that I put out with John Bates from Big Black Delta. And that one was in between albums and I wanted to come back to it. So I’m glad I finally got around to finishing that one off. I’m just about [done]doing a music video for that one, I think, which will come out in the spring when the vinyl comes out. I’ve seen the vinyl, we got a test one and it looks fantastic.

So, [with] my OCD, like you know it has to look as good as the original. Like the debut vinyl and the two, when you put them together they’re like a set. Different. Same fonts, but different colored foiling. Yeah, I’m super OCD about all that sort of stuff. Because now that I’m – wot, I’ve been running Dark Horse for God knows how long, but just got so many good artists that I get a chance to like have input into the design.

We’ve done like 80 releases, so probably about 40 vinyls and maybe probably 80 digital in the last year and a half. So everything from Cat Stevens to Joe Strummer to Leon Russell… [recently] we managed to license one of my favorite records. So we’ve got, I listen to it every day. It’s a limited edition pink vinyl… It’s fantastic.

Dhani Harrison: That, yeah, it’s the rune called, I guess Ægishjálmur, which kind of directly translates as magic helmet or “Helm of Awe.” It was a Viking battle rune; I thought it was quite appropriate for this time that we’re living in right now because it’s “get out of my face” kind of magic, you know? It’s like a “keep protective in all directions,” but that said, it paralyzes the enemy. It’s one of those things that’s… Irresistibility, I think, is the spell. I think that the pinecone obviously is a symbol, you look at it through all religions as the mind opening, so there was pictures of it closed and pictures of the open in the graphics. And it’s something about masks.

I was obsessed with…this mask figure, which was like me as a samurai mask in the [first] record. But it was funny how that just like a year later, everyone’s in masks. It was weird. All of the lyrics and everything on that record kind of came true. So I feel like this record is kind of like, there was the one from the Before Times warning you about stuff, and then there’s the [current] one where it’s like, “Too late to wise up. I hope you’ve done the work.” It’s that kind of ‘We’re Here Now’-type sentiment.

Dhani Harrison: Fake news! Yeah, it was as if I was writing the news with all the records, and then All About Waiting and Admiral of Upside Down, which happened before Stranger Things .

Dhani Harrison: It kind of blew my mind… I’d moved kind of out of the city. And I was living on the coast north of L.A. and I was by myself in this house near the ocean. And it was like all of this stuff just came to me and it came like, fully formed. And it was like I was hearing it and I was just writing it down. But all of that, like, I don’t know why I was singing ‘It’s not like it used to be.’ And when I went back, I just played two shows in England. I performed the whole-it was actually the nerdiest show, you would have really liked it- We did the whole of the first album in chronological order, and then we did the whole of the second album in chronological order. And it was really, that was the first time I’ve done that. And it was like, “wow, they actually dovetail together really nicely.” And because they’re both cyclical, you can start them straight away from the end into the beginning. The first one ends with the ‘bom bom bom’ and then [the second one] starts again with ‘womp womp womp,’ you know? And the second one ends with that weird meltdown, ‘Wolves Around The City’ and then goes back straight into ‘Dangerous Lies.’ It works that way, so you can just kind of leave them on. But hearing them in a row was really…It tripped me out because it was like the foreshadowing of the first record of what happened in between those two records[it] was pretty far out. Like it was pretty bang on.

Dhani Harrison: [ laughs ] I’m going to stop writing about horrible things, I promise!

Dhani Harrison: I know, and it was like “I wrote that two years ago!” Exactly. And recorded it. Very funny. It is true, though, even the Innerstanding title, it’s like “if you force your opinions on other people, you’re Overstanding. And if you’re being forced upon you’re Understanding,” which is why police require you to ‘understand them,’ [ mock policeman voice ] “ Do you understand me?” You know, and… Innerstanding is to comprehend only from a place of love and detachment. So you’re neither forcing your opinion on anyone, nor are you being forced to understand anything. And so, I think that, in conjunction with the phrase “right side of history,” it’s like, well, if you don’t want to end up on the [wrong] side of history, then you can only come at things from an Innerstanding and from a place of love as opposed to fear. [Then] you won’t end up on the wrong side of history. And if you do, it doesn’t matter what people choose, what their beliefs are in any way, shape or form. If you don’t cast it, love is the absence of judgment, and judgment is the absence of love. So if you come at it from a place of love, you’ll always end up on the right side of history.

Dhani Harrison: I think that’s the way that I try and live my life now. It’s just because we’ve all got to be able to understand that even if we’re all different and we all believe different things and we all make different choices for ourselves, that doesn’t mean we can’t all love each other. Someone else’s belief system shouldn’t threaten my belief system. And knowing what you are and knowing yourself… and that’s the thing, a lot of people don’t really know themselves. And so they’re very easily manipulated.

If you’re not healed, if you’re not doing the work to actually dig up all the things, the dark parts of yourself that you have to kind of learn to be with, then you’re an easy person to manipulate. So well-healed people, it’s like… governments and media, they don’t want well-healed people because they’re very hard to manipulate.

Love is the absence of judgment, and judgment is the absence of love. So if you come at it from a place of love, you’ll always end up on the right side of history.

Dhani Harrison: I think so. I think always, my goal is to try and draw awareness to some of these ludicrous situations. And there was a period when I was hanging out with my dad and we were making a record called Brainwashed , and it’s like, well, “turns out that’s a thing.” And if you listen to the lyrics of [ Brainwashed ], that couldn’t be more appropriate now. Thenewno2 was kind of a continuation of that song. And Ollie and I worked on the record and the album cover, and we actually did all the photos for the album cover. And that’s why it’s just a dummy crash dummy holding a television, you know what I mean? It’s like that…the cover of Brainwashed kind of became our manifesto, which was, “ Let’s just… we’ve got to draw attention to how silly this is and how people don’t realize, like, ‘we’re going to end.’ ”

And Thenewno2 is ahead of its time. We knew that we were going to end up in this position probably in about 20 years from now, where. You know, shit’s going to start getting really weird and…I remember, like 4 or 5 years ago, getting AI Phone calls, you know? And before anyone knew about AI and being like, “this is an AI, this is AI probing my brain. It’s trying to… it’s cold calling me on the phone to see if it can pass the Turing Test,” you know. And. People were like, “No, you’re mad. You’re insane.” I’m like, “No, no, no. I got called by an AI today, and it started recording bits of my voice and playing it back to me!” And I had a few friends who had it happen to them and they were like, “Oh, I thought my dad was having a stroke because he kept saying the same thing over and over again. And then I realized it was a machine that was just using bits of his voice,” you know. And we were like, “What is this strange new level of Hell that we’ve reached?” And then, sure enough, AI comes out…you’re like, “Oh, it’s not just come out.” It’s been out forever. It’s just weird now we’re ‘getting it,’ you know? So there’s a weird stuff that’s been out there, and I feel like Thenewno2 was all about calling out future tech that was probably going to be interfering with our lives. And so, someone said the other day, “Oh, how come your new album is so much more militant than your old stuff?” I was like, “You must have never listened to Thenewno2!”

Initially credited with the design work for the Brainwashed gatefold, featuring faceless mannequins at the foot of monitors, theNewNo2 spun off into a musical duo with a Dhani Harrison-illustrated logo and a mission statement which carries through to 'Innerstanding' © Aidan Moyer

Dhani Harrison: Because I was like, because it’s not…it’s just a continuation. I just feel like…you know, Olly [Hecks] and I, who started Thenewno2 with me, we were kind of like a Charlie Brooker, Chris Morris combination. You know what I mean? They go off [to]make things by themselves, and then they’d come together and make these kind of really cynical Black Mirror kind of stuff. So Thenewno2 is kind of like a musical Black Mirror before Black Mirror . If you haven’t watched it, you should watch a show called Nathan Barley . And it was one season and it came out in the late ‘90s, early 2000s, and it was written by Brooker and Morris, and it had the two guys from Mighty Boosh in it, and so many famous people are in it as their first show.

But it’s… it’s one of those shows that to this day is still relevant. I just feel like that kind of humor, you know what I mean? But yet writing stuff for this new record, there’s just so much ridiculous stuff to write about these days. That’s why “Dangerous Lies” is like, “Okay, well, there’s your manifesto for the year 2022, 2020.” And you can say all of that stuff is a lie or it’s misinformation or whatever, but… Well, then who’s controlling the misinformation bots? So it’s messed up either way you look at it, even if it’s all false. The fact that it’s still there for us to believe.

And I love this whole thing where now TV channels and governments are all getting their own Ministry of Truth. You know, BBC did it recently. They were like, [ mock newscaster affectation ] “and this is BBC Fact . We can guarantee you now that… believe us now!” Now you know it’s [true] because we’ve got a minister, we’ve got a lady in charge of disinformation now!” It’s like, “Of course. Course. Yeah. Great. Good story, bro.”

Dhani Harrison : Or it’s like, yeah, when you start seeing people turning up in your feed in Instagram and you know that they’re not real. Yeah, that’s not a real person. That’s an AI person, you know?

And then artists who are just AI artists now, it’s like, “Are you really an artist” or are you just [ air quotes ]… Yeah, exactly. So, it’s definitely a very strange time.

There’s good AI, too. There’s good stuff. I’m using musical AI to de-mix things and sync things and remove noise from old tapes. And that’s great. I love all of that stuff. That’s like a handy tool. But I think that I sort of move back to the forest and try not to… I’m debating leaving social media, but it’s obviously this classic argument where it’s like, “ It’s a tool that I use to sell records or to make people aware of my music .” But I think I’ll just let an AI do that for me now. And then I can have more time chopping wood and doing all the important stuff.

Dhani Harrison: Yeah, that was MAL. People got confused about that. They thought MAL was generating John’s voice. It was not generating John’s voice at all. That was all from a tape. And they would never have done that. Like, no way [the Beatles] would have done that ever. But people misinterpreted that. I actually used the MAL machine myself. I was mucking about with it when I was out in New Zealand. I de-mixed Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys. Because all of those things are done on MPCs, right? So there was no way of mixing them in ATMOS. So because they’re all stereo, there was no way of extracting the audio because it was done through an MPC and then…you put it through MAL, it just rips it apart. And even the record samples that Mario C’s scratching and cutting, it will pull those records, which were only ever in stereo for the Beastie Boys. It’ll pull those into about 16 tracks of drums. So like, you can turn off the hi-hat in your old sample. Like, “What?” That’s when it’s crazy.

And I sat there and they were having trouble identifying all the different bits. So I said, “Well, Mario C, that’s a sample of the organ like [a Wendy Carlos’] “Switched on Bach” kind of vibe, but like [an] organ version of Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C Minor. And I actually confirmed it. I was like, “that sounds like Rachmaninoff prelude in C Minor but chopped up on an organ.” And I asked Mike D and I said, “Is that… am I correct?” And he said, “yeah, Ad-Rock had played it into an SP 1200 and then was playing all the different bits.” So MAL is actually incredible. It gives you the ability to dissect anything. It’s like a magnifying glass.

** Dhani was involved in the development of The Beatles: Rock Band and Rock Band 3, which used isolated ‘stems’ of each instrument to simulate playing along with different parts of the original recordings. **

Dhani Harrison: No way!

Dhani Harrison: I’m very happy for you.

Dhani Harrison: I learned guitar by listening to Buddy Holly. You know, it’s just the same with AC/DC. It’s only three chords. You can play all Buddy Holly songs. Go find a nice Buddy Holly record and go strum along and just get used to changing the, just bash it out. Go play along with some Joe Strummer, have a thrash, you know, there’s no wrong way of doing it.

Dhani Harrison: No, no. [ laughs ]

Dhani Harrison: Well, thanks for being so caring about the music and the art and everything. I really appreciate it. And I hope this goes really well for your magazine. If there’s any way of getting a scan of that drawing, I’d love to see it.

Dhani Harrison: All right. All the best, peace.

Listen: Dhani Harrison Returns with “Damn That Frequency,” First Solo Release Since 2017

Dhani Harrison has returned with a new single, “Damn That Frequency,” featuring Blur’s Graham Coxon. The new number leans into the psychedelic realm with pulsating verve expelled through trance-like rhythmic thumps. The latest drop represents the musician’s first since his 2017 solo debut, In Parallel .

The artist also shared that he will take the stage over two nights, October 18 and 19, at London’s Omeara concert venue. Harrison got his start by turning out his first EP in 2006, EP001 , a collaborative project with Oliver Hecks. Collectively, the duo released an additional EP and three albums, including 2008’s You Are Here .

Then, in 2010, Harrison helped with the album As I Call You Down with Fistful of Mercy, the collective with Ben Harper and Joseph Arthur. In recent years, Harrison has lent his talents to writing scores for movies and television shows. In 2023, the artist assisted with moving his famed father’s solo catalog to Dark Horse Records, founded in 1974.

The aforementioned label is now run by Dhani and David Zonshine, who oversee the beloved catalog of music, which spans from George Harrison’s 1968 debut Wonderwall Music up to his final collection, Brainwashed , which landed in 2002, a year after the iconic music figure succumbed to a cancer diagnosis at age 58.

In 2016, Dhani and Zonshine also joined forces to co-produce A Night to Celebrate the Music of George Harrison , a live album and DVD recorded at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre during a tribute concert dubbed George Fest.

EXCLUSIVE: Dhani Harrison Discusses New Album, ‘Innerstanding,’ and the Joys of Working with Blur’s Graham Coxon

D hani Harrison, son of the late George Harrison, recently released his second official solo album, Innerstanding . The 10-track collection of atmospheric tunes initially was made available via digital formats in October, while physical CD and vinyl editions arrived in February 2024.

In an exclusive interview with American Songwriter , Harrison explained that Innerstanding was recorded after he and frequent collaborator Paul Hicks had done the soundtrack to an experimental film titled Futra Days , by director Ryan David. Similarly, Harrison noted, his first solo album, In Parallel (2017), was recorded after he and Hicks worked on the soundtrack to David’s previous film, Seattle Road (2016).

[RELATED: Dhani Harrison (George’s Son) Releases First LP in 6 Years INNERSTANDING ]

Harrison said he began working on ideas for the songs on Innerstanding on a laptop while he was spending several months in Australia during the pandemic, noting that the tunes were influenced by the Futra Days soundtrack.

“I just started making this record, using kind of what I had in my head from this film score I’d done,” he told American Songwriter . “So it was kind of all organic, the way that the first album came after the first score for this director, and the second album came after the second movie of this director. So they fit.”

Musicians Who Contributed to Innerstanding

Innerstanding features contributions from Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, longtime Gorillaz touring guitarist Jeff Wootton, The Duke Spirit singer Liela Moss, former Uh Huh Her member Camila Grey, Australian/British singer Mereki, and bassist Nick Fyffe, who played in Harrison’s old group thenewno2.

Harrison said he had almost the entire album recorded when he returned to the U.K. from Australia, with the exception of the main guitar parts. The 45-year-old musician said a highlight for him was putting guitar on the record alongside Coxon, whom he says is one of his favorite guitarists.

“Graham and I did a lot of stuff on this record, and just kind of threw down some insanity,” Harrison said. “You know, his guitar is the best sounding guitar. … [I]t sounds like a scary monster. It sounds like a … ‘Godzilla coming out of the ocean’ kind of sound.”

Harrison also praised Wootton’s contributions to the album, noting, “he’s an incredible player too.” He said that between himself, Coxon, and Wootton there was “very dirty guitar on the record.”

Themes and Concepts Behind Innerstanding

Thematically, Harrison explained that the songs on Innerstanding basically are about people being able to get along with each other despite our differences.

“[I]f you’re gonna be in this world now, we have to be living in our hearts and we have to be coming from a place of love,” Dhani maintained. “Otherwise, everything we do and everything we say and everything that’s around us can be … weaponized against us and used against us. … [A]lso, that whole concept of just, it’s okay to disagree on things and still love each other.”

Harrison also explained that another concept he’s trying to convey in Innerstanding is the idea of growing and learning by trusting your own experiences and intuition.

“[I]if we’re looking at ourselves, and we’re doing our work, and being good people and living … in natural law, you know, then you’re not getting manipulated,” he suggested. “And it’s very hard to manipulate people who are very well-healed and people who are living in their hearts.”

Innerstanding Artwork and Music Videos

The concept of the album also is reflected in the photos featured in the Innerstanding packaging, as well as the music videos that were shot for a number of songs. Among them is a recently released visual for the track “ I.C.U. ”

In the album artwork and video, Harrison is shown in various natural settings in the U.K., including in a cave, in a forest, on a rocky hilltop, and overlooking the sea. He told American Songwriter that going into nature gives one the opportunity for self-reflection.

“[W]hen you’re in nature, it’s very easy to let go of all of your bulls—, you know?” Harrison he noted. “Prejudices … anger or fear, or whatever the [negative] things you’re feeling [are].”

He added, “[I]f this record stands for anything, it’s like taking that pause and kind of introspection of nature and to see if we can get back in tune with ourselves a little bit more.”

Plans for Innerstanding Concert Video, Tour Dates

Harrison revealed that plans are in the works to also release a video culled from two concerts he played at the London club Omeara in October 2023. The shows featured full performances of the Innerstanding and In Parallel albums.

Dhani seemed to suggest that the concert video could be released as part of a deluxe version of Innerstanding .

Meanwhile, Harrison says he’s planning to start touring behind Innerstanding , but no upcoming shows have been announced yet.

Paul McCartney Kicks Off 2022 North American Tour in Spokane: Recap, Photos + Setlist

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Paul McCartney Kicks Off 2022 North American Tour in Spokane: Recap, Photos + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

Early into the opening night of the “Got Back Tour” on Thursday (April 28th), Paul McCartney pointed out an attendee’s sign held aloft. It displayed a message that this night in Spokane, Washington — McCartney’s first live show since July 2019 — marked the fan’s 124th McCartney concert.

“It’s beautiful, we love it,” the Beatle said as cameras flashed the sign to the 12,000-plus folks filling Spokane Arena. “But it’s slightly obsessive.”

McCartney’s deadpan humor didn’t disappear during his time off the road, nor did his ability to craft a stunning, nearly three-hour set that somehow manages to thrill the Beatlemaniacs, give proper due to his too-often-neglected Wings work, and slip in a few surprises and new songs as well.

Even so, with a catalog as stacked as McCartney’s, it’s impossible to include every “Jet,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “A Hard Day’s Night” when you want to showcase tunes from your most recent albums. “Women and Wives” from 2020’s McCartney III made its live debut, and he played two songs from 2018’s Egypt Station (“Fuh You” and “Come On To Me”).

The kickoff of the “Got Back Tour” was an unusually intimate affair for a McCartney roadtrip. Spokane Arena, tucked in a small city in Eastern Washington, is by far the smallest venue he’ll play on his “Got Back Tour,” a jaunt that includes shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Fenway Park in Boston and Met Life Stadium in New Jersey (get tickets here ).

The chance to see McCartney this up close and personal made for a crowd that seemed — judging by McCartney’s own informal poll from the stage — split nearly equally between locals and people who’d traveled to catch McCartney’s first concert of 2022.

McCartney hit the stage in his typical casual jeans-and-blazer combo, joined by his long-time band to tear into “Can’t Buy Me Love,” followed quickly by Wings’ “Junior’s Farm” and “Letting Go.”

While McCartney opened the show playing his iconic Hofner bass at center stage, throughout the show he would bounce between myriad instruments — pianos, naturally, for songs like “Hey Jude,” “My Valentine” and “Maybe I’m Amazed,” but also electric guitar and mandolin. At one point, he brought out a ukulele he explained was a gift from George Harrison before paying tribute to his former bandmate with a cover of Harrison’s “Something” that evolved from simple acoustic strumming into a powerful, fully electrified wonder.

Editor's Pick

Someone like McCartney doesn’t need any additional hype to pack his concerts, given the generations of fans on hand thrilled to be experiencing just a taste of Beatlemania in person. But the pandemic pause that pushed McCartney off the road in 2019 and forced the cancellation of a planned lengthy 2020 tour added to the excitement of his return to the live stage Thursday.

And Peter Jackson’s 2021 The Beatles: Get Back documentary remarkably managed to raise McCartney’s profile to new heights as both casual fans and Beatles fanatics got a new glimpse into just what a driving, creative force he was in the context of the Fab Four. Among four unquestionable geniuses, the youthful McCartney (just 26 during the recording of Let It Be documented in Jackson’s film) clearly was the leader of the pack.

McCartney made mention of Jackson’s film more than once Thursday night, incorporating several clips into his splashy video display that engulfed the rear of the stage. The “Got Back” tour moniker is an obvious nod to the film, but its presence was felt most dramatically when McCartney returned to stage for his encore (carrying a Ukrainian flag in a nod to the world outside the arena) and said, “You want some more? We have something special for you.”

With that, McCartney duetted with John Lennon on “I’ve Got A Feeling,” using audio culled from the famous rooftop concert, the Beatles’ last public performance together. The vision of a grinning Lennon filled the screens above McCartney as the duo traded verses in what was easily one of the most stirring performances of the night.

The youthful McCartney on display via video was a stark contrast to the real-life McCartney on stage, at least physically. Still remarkably energetic and spry as he readies to turn 80 in June, McCartney’s age is showing in his face, a somewhat jarring juxtaposition if the last time you saw him was in the Get Back doc. His voice, though, remains in fine form, holding up remarkably well over a three-hour set even if his distinct screams aren’t quite as vivid as they used to be.

While much of the setlist echoed those songs played on his “Freshen Up Tour” in 2019, there were some noteworthy additions. “Getting Better” found its way into a show for the first time since 2003, as did “You Never Give Me Your Money” as part of an Abbey Road medley, which also included “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” making its first appearance in a McCartney set since 2008.

McCartney’s band is incredible, as you’d expect, and has been with him since 2002. Abe Laboriel, Jr., is a powerhouse drummer, Rusty Anderson rips off concise, searing solos, Brian Ray deftly shifts between guitar and bass depending on what McCartney’s up to, and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Wix Wickens fleshes out everything from the simplest early tunes (“Birthday,” “Love Me Do”) to more ornate fare (“Live and Let Die,” the show-closing “The End”) with style.

Julian Lennon on Covering “Imagine” For the First Time in Support of Ukraine: It Was ‘The Right Occasion”

McCartney is once again packing the three-piece Hot City Horns on the “Got Back Tour,” and their inclusion on several songs, particularly Wings’ “1985,” and the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna,” gave those songs added life.

McCartney’s spirits were high, but no match for an audience who relished his requests to “give us a Beatles scream” or who laughed and cheered when asked, “Let’s hear it for grandparents!” He remarked on how thankful he was to be able to play “back together, in the same room.”

But the most poignant moment of the night came as McCartney introduced “Here Today,” a song he wrote for Lennon shortly after his friend’s murder — a song he said expressed the love he had for Lennon, but didn’t express before his was lost.

“If there’s someone you want to say it to, get it said!” McCartney declared. Words to live by, no matter your age.

Paul McCartney next plays Seattle, WA at Climate Pledge Arena on Monday, May 2nd. Tickets for that gig, and for the rest of the tour, are available via Ticketmaster .

Setlist: Can’t Buy Me Love (The Beatles) Junior’s Farm (Wings) Letting Go (Wings) Got To Get You Into My Life (The Beatles) Come On To Me Let Me Roll It (Wings) Getting Better (The Beatles) (First time since 2003) Women & Wives (Live debut) My Valentine 1985 (Wings) Maybe I’m Amazed I’ve Just Seen A Face (The Beatles) In Spite Of All The Danger (The Quarrymen) Love Me Do (The Beatles) Dance Tonight Blackbird (The Beatles) Here Today Queenie Eye Lady Madonna (The Beatles) Fuh You Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite (The Beatles) Something (The Beatles) Ob La Di Ob La Da (The Beatles) You Never Give Me Your Money (The Beatles) (First time since 2003) She Came in Through the Bathroom Window (The Beatles) (First time since 2008) Get Back (The Beatles) Band On The Run (Wings) Let It Be (The Beatles) Live And Let Die (Wings) Hey Jude (The Beatles)

Dhani Harrison, Son of Beatle George Harrison, Wins Grammy Award

by Jacob Uitti April 12, 2022, 8:00 am

Dhani Harrison, son of famed Beatles guitarist George Harrison, became the second child of the former Mop Tops to win a Grammy Award. Zak Starkey (son of Ringo) won the Grammy for producing Got to Be Tough , Best Reggae Album by Toots & The Maytals in 2021.

Videos by American Songwriter

Dhani took home his first Grammy at the recent 64th Annual Grammy Awards this year for remastering his father’s legendary album, All Things Must Pass , in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

While other children of the Beatles, including perhaps most notably Julian Lennon, have been nominated for the award, Dhani and Zak are the two that have taken one home.

Dhani was not at the award show to accept it, but his mother, Olivia, was on hand to pick up her son’s trophy, which he earned for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for the anniversary work.

A statement on George’s official website read, “Decades in the making and lovingly crafted by the Harrison family, All Things Must Pass has now been completely remixed from the original tapes for this stunning release that fulfills Harrison’s longtime desire.”

Said Olivia in her acceptance speech, “58 Years ago George Harrison got his first Grammy when The Beatles won Best New Artist. It’s here for you. This music is here for you. It’s full of hope and compassion and healing and rock and roll.”

Olivia, herself, is now the third wife (or widow) of a Beatle to win a Grammy, following Linda McCartney (who won two with her husband Paul for their work in the band Wings). Yoko Ono also won Album of the Year with her late husband John for their work on his last album.

In a recent interview with Esquire , Dhani said, “We wanted it to be a time capsule, something that will last another fifty or a hundred years, so that’s why we put it in this artisanal-looking Victorian ale chest, something that captured the feeling of Friar Park and the passing of time.

“I’m really trying to draw everyone into the feeling of what it must have been like for him to start off at 27, renovating a house that took him the rest of his life, and at the same time, his band had broken up, he had Hare Krishnas living here, he was separating from his wife, his mother passed away during the making the record—it was a lot of really spiritual moments for my dad with this record.”
