Singapore is a modern, multicultural society packed with fascinating history, antiquity and culinary pleasures. Yet, there is a captivating unseen wild side, packed with natural gems as the Botanical Gardens, Pulau Ubin and the Sungei Buloh Wetlands.

The old streets of Chinatown have kept their charm, the cramped five-foot-ways, dingy alleys and raucous street hawkers are fascinating pockets of history. We can wander through these still-narrow streets discovering family-run goldsmiths, medicinal halls and tea-houses plying their trades next to sleeker neighbours such as hipster bars and lifestyle shops.

Little India delivers traditional Indian culture and fare, there are no lack of food choices here. Even if spicy food does not sit well with you, there is an abundance of choices, including street food like Roti Prata, or the marinated Chicken Tikka and delicious Palek Paneer that makes a great dip for a piece of fragrant garlic naan.

The Muslim Quarter Singapore – also known as the Kampong Glam – is Singapore’s smallest ethnic quarter and has a chic charm all of its own. And again, it is a living and working neighbourhood which makes it as authentic as they come.

The marks of the British colonial influence in the Neo-Classical buildings can be observed all around the city, it’s a fascinating mix of past and present.

  • Siem Reap – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom City including the Bayon and Ta Prom are fascinating temple complexes highlighting the power and skills of the Khmer civilization.
  • Wild nature at the Prek Toal biospheres on the Tonlé Sap lake the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia.
  • The local culture at Prek Toal floating village.
  • Beng Melea (built in the middle of the 12th century) and Koh Ker (Once the ancient capital of Cambodia).
  • Thmatboey ECO lodge (Giant and White Shouldered Ibises).
  • Siem Reap, local food, culture and local sites.
  • Phnom Penh – The Royal Place, National Museum of Cambodia, Wat Phnom and the Cheung Ek Killing fields.
  • Phnom Penh – Tonle Sap and Mekong river – Local food and culture.

It has been said that Cambodia’s Angkor Wat can only be rivalled by a few of the world’s greatest historic sites, such as Petra in Jordan or Peru’s Machu Picchu. But once you’ve paid a visit to the famed temple complex that has become a symbol of the country, you’ll realize that Cambodia’s magic extends far beyond the walls of Angkor Wat. From the country’s friendly people greeting you with wide smiles, its charming cities, rich culture and unique nature delivers a fascinating insight into the Khmer world.

The Angkor Archaeological Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia, stretching over some 400 km2. The Park contains magnificent remains of many of the Khmer Empire’s capitals from the 9 th to the 15 th century. They include the famous Angkor Wat complex, Angkor Thom City with the Bayon and Ta Prom temples with their countless sculptural decorations.

UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging program to safeguard this symbolic site and its surrounds.

Away from the more well-known temples, much of the country remains largely a road less travelled, and in many places rarely explored. It remains essentially a rural society and something of a regional backwater offering a refreshing throwback to an older and simpler era. It’s a fascinating country where we can immerse ourselves Khmer culture and food.

Cambodians remain among Asia’s friendliest and welcoming people.

LITTLE INDIA, THE MALAY QUARTER (KAMPONG GLAM) AND CHINA TOWN

  • 9.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.

LITTLE INDIA

A bustling hive of sights sounds and intriguing aromas, Little India has traditionally been the home of Singapore’s Indian community. We can wander the streets scented with spices and jasmine garlands, gaze upon rows of traditional outlets selling silver and brass-ware, ethnic jewellers and rainbow-coloured silk saris.

The colour, smiles and smells are all authentically subcontinental and warm as are the spiritual chants from the various mosques and temples. The spicy aromas that infuse the air are odd, yet intriguing and a visit to the oldest temple in Little India, Sri Veeramakaliamman is obligatory.

MALAY QUARTER

The history of Kampong Glam can be traced back to the 1820s. The name comes from the Malay language, kampung means ‘village’ and ‘gelam’ a Paperbark tree that grew in the area and was frequently used for building ships.

Glam was the historic seat of Malay royalty in Singapore. Today the former Sultan’s palace, the Istana, Kampong Glam, has been converted into a heritage museum. The Malay Heritage Center was created to provide locals and tourists with an insight into the rich history and culture of Singapore’s Malay history.

Arab Street with its abundance of carpet and fabric shops, Bussorah Streets souvenir shops, and Haji Lane, one of Singapore’s hidden gems, is known for its vintage clothing boutiques.

  • Lunch: Local Food Court.
  • 3.30 PM Pick up from reception.
  • Afternoon and evening in China Town.

CHINATOWN with a local guide

Chinatown has been the cultural hub for Singapore’s Chinese migrants since 1821. Situated next to the financial district. The quaint pre-war shop houses on the colourful streets and alleyways are home to a vast array of diverse shops.

When Sir Stamford Raffles divided up Singapore among its ethnic groups, the Chinese immigrants received the largest portion of land. Today, Chinatown is Singapore’s largest Historic District, and an important and unique ethnic quarter Singaporeans fondly call “our Chinatown”, with its colourful Peranakan shop-houses.

Soon after settling in Singapore, the people erected temples that were not just for worship, but also centres of dialect-group activities, before their respective clan associations as the Cantonese, Hokkien and Teowchews   were established.

  • Overnight: Singapore.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

PULAU UBIN AND THE SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS with a local guide

  •  Pulau Ubin and Singapore Botanical Gardens.
  • 6.30 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast on route to the Changi Boat Terminal.
  • Ten-minute boat ride to Pulau Ubin.

Our visit to Ubin will take us back to Singapore in the 1960s with the simpler pleasures of life. The slow lane starts as soon as you join the queue for the bumboat at the Changi terminal.

Shaped like a boomerang, Pulau Ubin is situated just off the north-eastern corner of mainland Singapore and often considered the last ‘kampong’ (village) in Singapore. It also holds the Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems.

In the early days, granite mining supported a few thousand settlers. Much of the original vegetation was cleared for the cultivation of rubber and crops like coffee, pineapple, coconut and jasmine. Today, the abandoned granite quarries filled with water remain as picturesque relics of Ubin’s history, while forests and grasslands have regenerated to cover up the ravages of the past.

  • Lunch: Changi Food Court then head to the Singapore Botanical Gardens.

SINGAPORE BOTANICAL GARDENS

The idea of a national garden in Singapore started in 1822 when Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore and a keen naturalist, developed the first ‘Botanical and Experimental Garden’ at Fort Canning.

It was only in 1859 that the Gardens at its present site was founded and laid out. The Gardens were handed over to the British colonial government (in 1874) and a series of Kew-trained botanists saw the Gardens blossom into an important botanical institute.

  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND, KRANJI BATTLE SITE, THE KRANGI WAR MEMORIAL AND KONG MENG SAN PHOR KARK SEE MONASTERY

  • 7.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast route.
  • Sungei Buloh Wetlands and War Memorial.

SUNGEI BULOH WETLAND RESERVE with a local guide.

The name means (Sungei = River, Buloh = Bamboo). Opened in 1993, this 87-hectare wetland refuge is of supreme importance during the migration of waders and shorebirds (East-Asian Flyway) between the summer breeding grounds of North Asia (Siberia, China etc.) and the wintering grounds of the Southern Hemisphere (Australia etc.).

The wetlands are also home to the large Malayan Water Monitor, Smooth-coated Otters (subspecies), Plantain Squirrels (subspecies) and the Estuarine Crocodiles.

KRANJI BATTLE SITE with a local guide.

The Battle of Singapore was fought from 8 to 15 February 1942 between Allied (mainly British Commonwealth) and Japanese forces. The first Japanese troops landed in Singapore via the northwestern coastline on 8 February 1942.

At the Causeway on 10 February, Dalforce fighters and the Australian 27th Brigade were noted for repelling the initial advance by the Japanese Imperial Guards Division by inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers, so much so that Japanese commander Lieutenant General Tomoyuki Yamashita considered withdrawing from the operation.

Even though the Japanese forces faced stiff resistance from the Allied soldiers they managed to breach the Kranji- Jurong defence line when Allied forces retreated from the area due to a misunderstanding of orders thus allowing the Japanese to land and consolidate their invasion of Singapore.

KRANJI WAR MEMORIAL with a local guide.

Krangi War Memorial; The Kranji War Memorial in Singapore honours the men and women from the Commonwealth who died in the line of duty during World War II.

  • Lunch: at the Roti Prata Place.
  • 2.30 PM Pick up from reception.

KONG MENG SAN PHOR KARK SEE MONASTERY

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery (KMSPKS) was founded in 1921 by Venerable Sik Zhuan Dao from China. It serves as a place for Buddhist monks to practice and propagate the Dharma.

Kong Meng San which means “Bright Hill” in Chinese, is the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Pure-land.

Phor Kark See the “monastery of universal awakening”, encapsulates the vision and aspiration of the monastery to reach out to all sentient beings to assist them in the path towards awakening, Nirvana!

EXPLORE BALESTIER ROAD AND THE SINGAPORE MARITIME TRAIL

  • 10.00 AM: Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Discover Balestier Road, Culture and History

BALESTIER ROAD

From sugar plantations to shops filled with sweet and savoury delights, Balestier is an area that offers a real taste of history. From Tigers that killed sugar cane workers to temples with deep roots, the Road tells a tale that spans nearly 180 years and has borne witness to Singapore’s remarkable journey from British trading post to today’s modern city.

The Goh Chor Tua Pek Kong Temple was built in 1847 at Lavender Road (previously, Rochor Road) by Chinese labourers working on Joseph Balestier’s sugar plantation. Goh Chor is the Hokkien transliteration of Rochore, the name of the surrounding area in the mid 19th century, while Tua Pek Kong (literally ‘Grand Old Man’) is a Taoist deity widely worshipped by overseas Chinese across Southeast Asia.

Balestier Road is characterized by its two-story shop-houses. One example is the row of shop-houses from 292 to 312 Balestier Road built in 1926. It is a hybrid architectural style known as “Singapore Eclectic” or “Chinese Baroque” that arose during the rubber boom from the turn of the 20th century to the 1930s.

Another different style at 503 Balestier Road, designed by Kwan Yow Luen, these shop-houses were built in 1928  by Sim Cheng Neo, a lady whose family home was located there.

The history and culture packed into this road are as delicious as its numerous food stalls.

  • Lunch: Balestier Road.
  • 3.00 PM pick up from reception.
  • Afternoon the Singapore Maritime Trail and the Merlion.

SINGAPORE MARITIME TRAIL

The Singapore Maritime trail will take us on a journey to discover the fascinating history and iconic landmarks rooted in Singapore maritime heritage.

From the cool shaded forest of Fort Canning, on to the Singapore River, Clarke Quay, Raffles Landing site, past the Grand Fullerton Hotel to Collyer Quay and the Iconic Merlion.

Once used as a trading port the Singapore River was lined with large warehouses and docks, which loaded waiting barges to carry goods by the river out to waiting ships to convey around the world.

Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are now lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and shops, and has seen a huge revival into Singapore’s busiest entertainment area.

Collyer Quay is home to the archetypal symbol of Singapore, the Merlion (the mythical Merlion with the head of a lion and the body of a fish).

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

JURONG BIRD PARK, GARDENS BY THE BAY AND SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

  • 8.00 AM Pick up from reception. Breakfast at the hotel.

JURONG BIRD PARK

Jurong Bird Park offers us an up-close encounter with some of Asian’s splendid and rarest feathered friends. Spread across 20.2 hectares in a western corner of Singapore, the sprawling park is Asia’s largest, including a collection of over 400 species encompassing up to 5,000 birds.

There are many star attractions at this sprawling park including the world’s largest walk-in Lorikeet flight aviary at over nine stories high, where you’ll get close to 15 colourful Lorikeet species, the impressive Penguin Coast where you’ll find many species of these flightless birds and the Waterfall Aviary, one of the world’s largest walk-in aviaries, home to more than 600 birds and a 30-meter-high waterfall.

  • PM: Gardens by the Bay.
  • 3.30 PM pick from reception.

GARDENS BY THE BAY AND SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

GARDENS BY THE BAY

The Gardens by the Bay was conceptualized in 2005 as a key component of the government’s “City in a Garden” vision, which evolved from Singapore’s reputation as a Garden City.   National Parks envisioned a garden that would eventually rival iconic green spaces like Central Park in New York and London’s Kew Gardens, and become a defining feature of Singapore’s aspirations to become a global city.   A new public green space in the city area was also needed, as the Singapore Botanical Gardens was overstretched by the demands of leisure, research and academic usage.   It was thus decided that Gardens by the Bay would be the focal point for horticultural recreation, while the Botanic Gardens would cater mainly to education, research.

SINGAPORE HARBOR CRUISE

As night falls we board one of Singapore’s iconic bum-boats, which have been retrofitted with zero-emission electric engines.

On board, there is commentary about the river’s colourful history, while we relax and cruise around the harbour taking in the unforgettable Singapore evening skyline.

  • Evening: boat trip Singapore Harbor.

DEPART SINGAPORE FOR CAMBODIA

  • Breakfast at Singapore hotel.
  • AM transport to Changi Airport for a flight to Siem Reap (included).
  • Arrive Siem Reap and be greeted by our local representative and proceed to check in to your hotel. You can then spend some time to rest and relax at leisure.

Siem Reap province is in northwest Cambodia. It is the major tourist hub in Cambodia, as it is the closest city to the world-famous temples of Angkor (the Angkor temple complex is north of the city). The provincial capital is also called Siem Reap and is in the South of the province on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest freshwater reserve in whole Southeast Asia.

The name of the city literally means Siamese defeated, referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century.

  • PM Meet and Greet and evening meal to discuss the details of this part of the Trip.
  • Overnight Siem Reap.

ANGKOR GREAT PARK

  • Angkor Wat archaeological sites.
  • 7:30 AM: Pick up from reception.
  • Breakfast at the hotel.

Angkor Great Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia.

AM: Angkor Wat, in its beauty and state of preservation, is unrivalled. It is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. The centre structure is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centrepiece of any visit to the temples of the Angkor Great Park. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief’s and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.

Lunch: Local Food Court (inside the Angkor Park complex).

PM: ANGKOR THOM CITY, THE BAYON TEMPLE AND TA PROM

Angkor Thom City is undeniably an expression of the highest genius. It is, in three dimensions and on a scale worthy of an entire nation, the materialization of Buddhist cosmology, representing ideas that only great painters would dare to portray.

The Bayon vies with Angkor Wat as a favoured monument of visitors. The two evoke similar aesthetic responses yet are different in purpose, design, architecture and decoration. The dense jungle surrounding the temple camouflages its position in relation to other structures at Angkor, so it was not known for some time that the Bayon stands in the exact centre of Angkor Thom City.

Ta Prom, best known for the movie “Tomb Raider”, lies 1 km east of the Angkor Thom City. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prom is in much the same condition in which it was found, merged with the jungle. The photogenic and atmospheric combination of Silk Cotton and Strangler Fig trees entwined in the ruins, and the jungle surroundings, have made it one of Angkor’s most enchanting temples.

  • Overnight: Siem Reap Hotel.

AM: Nature walk with a chance for us to view the Giant Ibis in its protected habitat.

We will also visit the local school to see how the students are progressing and to deliver much needed books and stationery.

  • Lunch: Tmatboey Eco Lodges.

PM: Explore Beng Mealea on route back to Siem Reap.

BENG MEALEA

Beng Mealea (its name means “lotus pond”). The history of the temple is unknown, and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat. Scholars assumed it was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II and is enclosed by a massive moat measuring 1.2km by 900m.

It was built as Hinduist temple, however, there are some carvings depicting Buddhist motifs as well. Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely un-restored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built to the temple complex of Koh Ker has made it more accessible.

  • 8:30 AM: Pick up from reception.

Drive to Phnom Penh stopping along the way to visit local markets and food courts.

Phnom Penh is a vibrant bustling city situated at the confluence of three rivers, the mighty Mekong, the Bassac and the great Tonle Sap Lake.

It was once considered the ‘Gem’ of Indochina and still maintains considerable charm with plenty to see. It exudes a sort of provincial charm and tranquillity with French colonial mansions and tree-lined boulevards amidst monumental Angkorian architecture.

A mixture of Asian exotica and the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits us in the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

  • PM. Free time.
  • Overnight: Phnom Penh Hotel.

CHEUNG EK AND NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CAMBODIA

  • 8:00 AM Pick up from reception.

The Cheung Ek genocide museum is in Cheung Ek commune, Dankoar district, about 15 km from the centre of Phnom Penh.

The Killing Fields of Cheung Ek was made famous by the film of the same name “The Killing Fields”, it was a place where more than 17,000 civilians were killed and buried in mass graves; many of them transported here after detention and torture in Toul Sleng. This place is a chilling reminder of the brutalities of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. In the centre of the area is a 17 story glass stupa which houses 8000 skulls exhumed from mass graves.

Note: Both Tuol Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields exhibits may be disturbing for some and aren’t suitable for younger children and adults who are easily shocked.

  • PM: National Museum of Cambodia.

NATIONAL MUSEUM

Located just north of the Royal Palace, the National Museum of Cambodia is housed in a graceful terracotta structure of traditional design (built from 1917 to 1920), it incorporates an inviting courtyard garden.

The museum is home to the world’s finest collection of Khmer sculpture: a millennium’s worth and more of masterful Khmer design.

CAMBODIA’S ROYAL PALACE, WAT PHNOM AND APSARA DANCE PERFORMANCE

  • 8:00 AM: Pick up from reception.

ROYAL PALACE

The Royal Palace is a striking structure situated near the riverfront. Its classic Khmer roofs and ornate gilding dominates the diminutive skyline of Phnom Penh. The complex is divided by walls, on the north side is the Silver Pagoda and to the south-west is the Khemarin Palace “Palace of the Khmer King”, where Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni resides.

PM: WAT PHNOM

Set on top of a tree-covered knoll 27m high, Wat Phnom is the only hill in town. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues discovered by a woman name, Penh. The statues of Buddha were deposited there by the waters of the Mekong.

The main entrance to Wat Phnom is via the grand eastern staircase, which is guarded by lions and naga (snake) balustrades.

Today, many people come here to pray for good luck and success in school exams or business affairs. When a petitioner’s wish is granted, he or she returns to make the offering (such as a garland of jasmine flowers or bananas, of which the spirits are said to be especially fond) promised when the request was made.

It is a wonderful place to mix with local worshipers.

KHMER TRADITIONAL DANCE AND PERFORMANCES

It has been a tradition since the earliest days of tourism in the 19th century to treat visitors to Cambodia with an ‘Apsara dance performance’ – a taste of classical Khmer culture.

No visit to Cambodia is complete without attending at least one performance.

Dance performances commence at 7:00 PM, consisting of 4 or 5 dances (classical and folk).

Cambodia boasts a warm and tropical climate, but a distinct wet and dry season set the calendar thanks to its proximity to the equator. Bring a raincoat if your trip coincides with the annual down pour.

Top things to do

Catch sunrise in the gateway of angkor.

Besides magnificent ancient temples, experiencing the spectacular sunrise in Siem Riep is a treat to your sight. You can try waking up early in the morning, taking a tuk-tuk, and while discovering a peaceful local life, watching over the sunrise and see how perfect this moment is.

Cannot miss the pride of Khmer Empire - Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is an ancient city in Cambodia that was the center of the Khmer Empire. Though this place is packed with tourists, Angkor Wat with its unrivaled beauty and state of preservation is breathtaking to see. This largest and best-preserved monument of the Angkor is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.

Set aside a half day to explore Angkor Thom in depth

Founded by Angkor's greatest king, Jayavarman VII (reigned 1181-1219), Angkor Thom is one of the must-visit cities when traveling to Cambodia. Angkor Thom means "the great city" in Khmer, was built in a nearly perfect square, the sides of which run north to south and east to west. This 12th-century royal Buddhist city is especially famed for its grand Bayon Temple, Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King, Baphuon Temple and Phimeanakas Temple.

Experience the culture and wildlife of Tonle Sap Lake

Apart from temples, you shouldn’t leave Cambodia without exploring the fascinating lakeside villages on the nearby the Great Lake of Cambodia: Tonle Sap . The Lake is the largest freshwater in South East Asia, providing many biodiversities, over 300 species of freshwater fishes, as well as snakes, crocodiles, tortoises, and water birds. Starting from Tonle Sap Lake, visitors can make a journey to Phnom Penh by express boat crossing the lake and docking at the village of Chong Khneas.

Free yourself when you are in Phnom Penh

Being a frenetic, bustling city,  The capital of Cambodia is the ideal cosmopolitan location with galore tourist activities: hop on and off different cafes and restaurants, go hiking, explore the nightlife,...This is also the place where you will discover some of the most important historic sites the country has to offer such as the Royal Palace which displays brilliant examples of traditional paintings and sculptures.

Admire the art performance of the Aspara dance

Watching the Apsara Show - the traditional Khmer performance is one of the top activities to do in Cambodia for those who enjoy art, theatrics and dance. Derived from the mythology of Buddist and Hindus, the Aspara Show has a long history of over 15 centuries and evolved into the distinctive, modern form we see today. The Khmer dance has a plot that it tells through the graceful, adaptable moves of the performers.

Engage with the wild

Together with an uncountable number of temples, Cambodia's attractions also include a number of national parks and wildlife refuges that are home to some of the world's rarest plant and animal species. Visits to these places rank among the most enjoyable things to do in Cambodia for adventurers and environmentalists.

Discover beautiful beaches

Cambodia is home to some of Southeast Asia's calmest, most relaxed beaches. Many of the most well-liked tourist sites in Cambodia include the sand-covered, scenic beaches of Sihanoukville, Kep, Koh Rong, and Ream, which provide guests with every convenience and breath-taking scenery. Plus, these areas are where locates the most luxurious Cambodia beach resorts.

Join Cambodian cooking class

Perhaps, Cambodia is not well known in the world cuisine community as its neighbors Thailand and Vietnam, which are both culinary giants. Yet, Khmer cuisine is also rather unique, with a wide range of traditional national dishes, all with a distinctive Cambodian touch of flavor. Some of those include Cambodian amok curry, Khmer rice porridge, dried fish and different kinds of snacks.

Spot endangered dolphin at Kratie

If you are keen to explore more wildlife on one of our Cambodia Guided tours, then we could take you to Kratie. This is a beautiful location and has become quite popular due to dolphin-watching activities. On one of our tours, you can get up close to the gorgeous and playful Irrawaddy dolphins. Your guide will also be able to tell you all about how tourism is helping protect the dolphins and ensure that their habitat remains intact.

Take a climb to Prasat Preah Vihear for a mesmerizing view

This is another great secret of Cambodia that fewer people explore. We can take you up atop the Dangrek Mountains to discover these incredible temples and delight your senses with amazing views of the Cambodian floodplains. It’s quite a hike but well worth the trip for keen explorers. The temple actually rests on the border of Thailand and has been a cause of confrontation between the two nations. It is a remarkable World Heritage site and a beautiful part of the Cambodian tourism trail.

Visit Banteay Chhmar

Are you keen to go to a temple exploring away from the crowded areas? If so then this could be the perfect adventure for you and we can lead you into this incredible temple complex . Built by Angkorian king Jayavarman VII, it is a remarkable place to explore fascinating depictions of ancient battles on the walls of the temples.

More information about cambodia.

In a  Cambodia vacation package,  you can truly embrace the magic of  Southeast Asia ; it’s a brilliant adventure travel destination, filled to the brim with enchanting temples, idyllic beaches, and opportunities to immerse yourself in the country’s unique and colorful culture.

The legacy of the mighty and long-lived  Khmer Empire  is alive in the bucket-list  Angkor Wat Complex , an unmissable stop on a  tour of Cambodia,  whilst the modernity of the cities such as  Siem Reap  and  Phnom Penh  offers the traveler all the usual hustle and bustle of  Asia,  plus excellent cuisine and cosmopolitan culture.

Located in the southern part of the  Indochina peninsula ,  Cambodia  shares borders with  Vietnam, Laos,  and  Thailand,  making it the perfect destination for a multi-center  tour to Southeast Asia . A majority  Buddhist  country, it is home to approximately  16 million  inhabitants, whose smiles and warm hospitality is one of the aspects that make  Cambodia  such a brilliant place to travel to.

Away from the cities and tourist hot-spots, you have countless opportunities to experience the rustic charms of rural  Cambodia,  with its ethnic minority hill tribes, abundant agriculture, and simplicity of everyday life. This is what makes a  tour to Cambodia  an experience rather than a box-ticking exercise. Having long been on the radar of the more intrepid backpackers,  Cambodia  is looking towards the future with optimism as it’s now firmly on the map as a must-do travel destination.

History of Cambodia

The country’s fascinating history is one of the main attractions to explore on a  tour of Cambodia, immortalized  in the impressive monuments and the traditions of the people. The first settlements sprung up around  150 AD , in the fertile  Mekong Delta  region, and by the  9th-century  the  Khmer Empire  was founded by  King Jayavarman II.

At first,  Khmer  civilization was based on agriculture and  animist  beliefs until  Indian  spiritual traditions, such as  Hinduism  and  Buddhism , were introduced by foreign merchants, sparking the construction of brilliant ancient temples such as  Angkor Wat , thought to have mapped the cosmic world in stone.

A  tour of Angkor Wat  is not only the highlight of most visitors  vacation to Cambodia  but also the best way to contemplate the glory of the ancient  Khmer Empire.  By the  16th-century  civil war and  Thai  invasion saw the decline of the empire's power, whilst increasing pressure from  Vietnam  to the east created a power struggle with  Cambodia  squeezed in between the two powers.

The  19th-century  marked the retreat of  Thai  influence from the country but increased numbers of  Vietnamese  settlers and an influx of  French  missionaries resulted in  Cambodia  falling under a  French protectorate  in  1864 .

Although this was not a positive time for many everyday  Cambodian’s , the  French   protectorate  increased infrastructure in the country and gave the economy a boost, as well as leaving its influence on the country’s culture, something you’ll notice if you take a  Cambodia tour package,  both in the colonial architecture, with its royal palace and national museum, and the national cuisine.

Cambodia  gained independence in  1953,  but the nearby  Vietnamese War  extended into the country, bringing bombings and conflict. A military coup in  1970  installed a right-wing, pro-US  Khmer Republic  who faced much opposition from  Communism  groups such as the notorious  Khmer Rouge , marking the beginning of a dark period in the country's history. Led by  Pol Pot,  the  Khmer Rouge  took power in  1975  and began a campaign of terror and genocide against so-called enemies of the state, including ethnic minority groups and intellectuals.

Approximately a quarter of the total population was killed during the next three years, many at the fatal  Killing Fields.  On a  package tour to Cambodia,  visitors have the opportunity to contemplate this horrific era on several tours and trips around  Phnom Penh.   Vietnam  eventually took control of the country and peace talks began in  1989.

It was not until  1993  that the monarchy was reinstated and today the government is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. On a  tour of Cambodia,  it is eye-opening and fascinating to consider how far the nation has come after those tumultuous years in the not so distant past.

Nature in Cambodia

With lowlands, mountains, deltas, and vast plains,  Cambodia  is an adventurer's dream, whilst on the other hand, its  443  kilometers of coastline along the  Gulf of Thailand  offers tropical beaches and paradise islands, perfect for beach-lovers. The climate is characterized by dry and wet seasons, with tropical monsoons.

The country’s verdant rainforests are home to a rich array of wildlife, as is the mighty  Tonle Sap Lake  in the center of the country. The diverse nature of the landscapes and natural scenery of the country makes  Cambodia tours  an exciting experience for all lovers of the great outdoors.

The  Cardamon Mountains  in the west of the county are covered in lush rainforest, the largest remaining rainforest in  Southeast Asia , home to rare and endangered wildlife such as the elusive  clouded leopard  and  Indochinese tigers.   Tonle Sap  and its surrounding biosphere reserve are home to unique natural phenomena and charming floating villages.

Taking a  boat trip on Tonle Sap  is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region. If you’re looking for something more laid-back, head to beautiful  Sihanoukville,  a popular beach destination adorned with white sandy beaches and palm trees and  Cambodia’s  favorite paradise retreat.

Culture in Cambodia

On a  tour of Cambodia,  you’ll notice how religion is intertwined with the daily lives of almost all inhabitants. Modern  Khmer  culture is a fusion of traditional animistic beliefs and  Buddhism  with a touch of  French  influence too. Unique  hill tribe  cultures have their cultural traditions adding to the fascinating tapestry of national culture in  Cambodia.

Traditional  Khmer  architecture, dance, and sculpture are beautiful relics of the country’s history; you cannot miss a traditional dance performance during a  trip to Cambodia.  Today, old and new sit side by side. The cities might feel modern but rural communities continue to live simple lives and keep their ancestors' traditions alive. Around the country, traditional dress is widely worn and has important societal and hierarchical importance indicated in different colors and patterns.

Embark on a journey to one of  Southeast Asia’s  most exotic destinations.  Cambodia  charms you with its mix of modernity and tradition and it’s impossible to not fall in love with the warmth of the people and the treasures of the ancient  Khmer Empire.

Private Tours & Luxury Holiday In Cambodia

Cambodia’s history comprises both the greatest aesthetic feats and the most heinous crimes of humanity since the country is best known for both the massive temples of Angkor Wat and the violent Khmer Rouge days of the 1970s and later civil war.

Visitors are usually drawn to Cambodia by its rich history, but there is much more to see in this Southeast Asian country than just the temples of Siem Reap. Its charm extends far beyond the country’s many temples. The locals genuinely enjoy the company of tourists, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly to all visitors. Whether you’re planning to stay in one of the many luxurious eco-lodges by the forest edge or explore the bustling outdoor markets, you’ll always feel at home in this welcoming city known for its friendly locals, delicious seafood, and warm hospitality.

Sun worshippers can’t resist the allure of the coast’s white sand beaches in Cambodia. The metropolis of Phnom Penh, which is Cambodia’s bustling capital, immerses visitors in the frantic pulse of modern Cambodian city life, while the countryside, which is covered in thick jungle, caters to the more daring travellers.

Whether you prefer to walk through the paths of the Khmers, venture into wilder terrains, get lost in the streets of Siem Reap, or explore the temples of Angkor Wat, we can plan a multi-day trip for you that takes you across the country’s mountainous regions, bustling metropolises, as well as its rural heartlands. Let us plan your dream vacation in Cambodia with a custom-designed itinerary.

Highlights Of Cambodia

These are some of the places we would choose for our holiday in Cambodia. If you don’t see your desired attraction here, just know that we can still plan it for you.

Private Tours & Luxury Holiday In Cambodia

The second largest city in Cambodia, Siem Reap, is bursting at the seams with everything from chic hotels, wine and dining establishments serving a variety of cuisines, luxurious spas, fantastic shopping, exciting local experiences that cater to both foodies and adventurers, and a vibrant arts and culture scene that features Cambodia’s premier contemporary circus.

Although Siem Reap is best known as the gateway to Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park, it is also home to a variety of attractions and activities that make it one of the country’s must-see destinations. A wide variety of exciting experiences, from bike rides through the verdant countryside just outside of town to lessons in traditional Cambodian cuisine, can all be found in this major hotspot. Before exploring Angkor Wat, it is recommended that you stop at the Angkor National Museum to learn more about the Temple’s history. It also offers many aspects of Khmer art and culture in this museum.

Angkor Wat can be found around five miles north of modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. At the time of the Khmer dynasty’s rule, it was one of the largest cities in the world. With time, the city’s wooden structures began to deteriorate as the surrounding jungle encroached upon them.

The most popular attraction here is the Temple, which is actually only a small part of the larger city, and it takes around three days to see all of the remarkable structures built by the Angkorian civilization. Other attractions are the Bayon Temple with its 216 stone-carved faces, the Angkor Thom and Preah Khan citadels, and the tree-root-encircled Temple of Ta Prohm, made famous by the filming of Tomb Raider.

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake is Cambodia’s most important waterway and the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. There is a thriving ecosystem in this body of water, which is also known as the Boeung Tonle Sap. In addition to being an essential component of Cambodia’s irrigation system and a significant source of food, the lake serves as the home of 170 floating villages, the inhabitants of which make their living from fishing and whose houses are built directly on the surface of the lake.

All of the homes, stores, churches, schools, and temples in these communities rest atop rudimentary buoy foundations made from lashed-together barrels and bamboo. A visit to Tonle Sap Lake is a worthwhile way to experience rural Khmer culture as well as one of the most ecologically diverse lakes in the world. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed.

Koh Kong Conservation Corridor

The Cardamom Mountains are known for their spectacular beauty, and they serve as the crown jewel of the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor, a pure natural rainforest zone that spans all the way through the southwestern section of Cambodia, on the Thai border, to the coast, where the island of Koh Kong lies offshore.

Bears, tigers, crocodiles, and elephants all call the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor home. It is one of the last few remaining unspoiled rainforests in Southeast Asia. The foggy lakes and tunnels provide a safe haven for endangered animals. You can also take in the unrivalled scenery from one of the many floating river lodges available. The mountains of the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor undoubtedly have an otherworldly aspect, particularly when compared with the rest of the metropolitan, war-torn Cambodia, and areas disregarded for conservation.

Absolutely! Visitors to Cambodia can participate in unique cultural experiences such as attending a traditional Apsara dance performance, learning about silk weaving at a local workshop with local artisans, joining a cooking class to learn Khmer cuisine, or exploring rural villages to gain insights into daily life and traditions.

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November and April, when it sees very little rain. During this time, you’ll see clear blue skies making it a great time to enjoy a relaxing getaway on the southern coast.

Outside of this period, humidity increases, and the rains come, assisting Cambodian farmers in the growing of their crops. However, you shouldn’t be deterred from travelling – the countryside is lush and green, rivers are full and flowing, and the temples are quiet. This is the best time to visit some of the outer-lying temples, which will often be deserted.

At the end of the summer one of Cambodia’s true wonders comes to life – The Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and home to Cambodia’s floating villages.

Even so, getting from A to B remains time-consuming: roads are still narrow and bumpy, while regular wet-season inundations play havoc with transport (and often wash away large sections of tarmac in their wake).

Phnom Penh  Conveniently located where the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers meet, Cambodia’s capital city is an energetic cultural hub. Visit the Grand Palace, the home of the royal family. Admire the intricate architectural details of Throne Hall, with its massive gates and multiple doors, and learn their ceremonial functions. Venture to the Silver Pagoda, located adjacent to the palace and adorned with precious jewels and home to ancient artifacts that have been gifted to the royal family. Initially built in the 1800s and rebuilt in the early 1960s, it is one of the few temples to withstand the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. Lake Tonle Sap  Located in Siem Reap, Lake Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The lake expands during the monsoon season and shrinks during the dry season. It’s not just a nice place to take a relaxing boat ride; it plays a vital role in the local economy. If you eat fish during your trip, odds are it came from this lake. Floating villages, complete with schools and shops, drift on its waters. A visit to the lake is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Siem Reap This eclectic, charming city is the perfect place to get a taste (literally!) of the local lifestyle. Walk down narrow alleys, canopied with colorful banners overhead, as you sample cuisine from street stalls bursting with exotic flavors. Tempt your taste buds with locally produced Khmer wine, which comes in many flavors, from simple rice to bizarre scorpion-infused. Top it all off with a tuk-tuk ride through the city.  Angkor Wat No trip to Cambodia is complete without a stop at its world-famous temple complex, Angkor Wat! Originally built as a Hindu temple for the god Vishnu, it was converted to a Buddhist temple in the 14th century. As a result, the temples that make up the complex are some of the most significant religious memorials in the world. Encompassed by a massive moat, 50 temples stretch across the park’s 402 acres. Ascend the steps into the complex, and stand in awe at the gigantic, intricately carved structures surrounding you. The extravagant details on the faces carved into the structures are astounding to see in person. Thanks to its rich history and culture, Angkor Wat was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Time to Visit Cambodia

It is always a good idea to learn more about the climate and weather of a destination beforehand to make the most out of the trip.  Cambodia has two major seasons across the year. These are the Monsoon season and the Dry season .  It is in the dry season when most tourists come to visit this country, and there is a fairly reasonable reason behind the same. During the dry season, the country sees less amount of rainfall. It typically lasts from November to April. This allows the tourists to enjoy the clear sky on the southern coasts. From February to April , the temperatures in Cambodia continue to rise as much as 40 degrees Celsius. Even in May and June, the temperature continues to be high. The humidity is also extreme during these times. This eventually results in rainfall. As soon as the monsoon season begins, Cambodia receives high rainfall. This is a result of high humidity. While it is extremely helpful for local farmers in order to grow costs, the rain often causes problems in remote areas. Due to this, it can be tough to travel in such regions. However, not all areas are impacted by it. Thus, we can also enjoy the greenery and scenic beauty. Flora and fauna during this season are at their peak. Hence, this can be a good time for those who cannot wait for long hours of wildlife exploration.

Even though Cambodia has no official winter season, the months between December and February are quite cooler. This is why many tourists also prefer this time frame. Most of the time, January is the coldest month but even then, the temperatures are around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. This is perhaps the best time to visit Cambodia  and explore places like Phnom Penh, Temples of Angkor, Battambang, and Siem Reap. As there is comparatively less humidity, it becomes easier to visit a variety of temples and markets. However, this is why Cambodia witnesses more tourists during this time. Thus, we will have a better time if we are prepared for crowds.

Many experts consider October a good time to visit Cambodia . This is because, at this particular time, the rainy season has come to an end. Moreover, the humidity is also quite low. Multiple temples across the country are also quiet in comparison to other months. Also, the tourists can find incredible discounts and offers to push down their expenses further. Lastly, this is a great time to visit the famous Tonle Sap Lake. We should keep all these points into consideration and choose to visit Cambodia during a time that we believe will be suitable for us.

How to reach Combodia

There are many ways to reach Cambodia  from which we can choose to travel. Some of the most popular ways to reach Cambodia include: By Air :  The most convenient way to travel from India to Cambodia is by air. Compared to any other form of transportation, air travel takes the least time. This is why the entire journey becomes extremely comfortable. We can take a flight from the majority of metropolitan areas in India like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. While in Cambodia, the major airports include Phnom Penh International Airport and Siem Reap International Airport.  Usually, there is a single stop on the journey from India to Cambodia. The typical flight duration is around 6 hours. We can choose from a variety of airlines including Singapore Airlines, Air Asia Philippines, Malaysian Airlines, and Thai Airways. It is always better to book the tickets in advance, especially in October and November, to save a considerable amount on flights. By Train :  There are no direct trains from India to Cambodia. Thus, to travel by train, we will have to book a flight to Bangkok and then take a train and reach Cambodia. This is an ideal option for those looking to explore various regions in SouthEast Asia. Hence, taking a train can be time-saving when travelling between different Southeast Asian countries. This will also allow us to gain many new experiences and learn about the culture and traditions of different Southeast Asian nations.

By Road : The journey from India to Cambodia by road can be quite adventurous. However, we must keep in mind that this will not be simple and easy. We will have to travel through numerous countries to reach the final destination, which can be quite expensive and more time-consuming. We will also need a number of documents when entering and leaving each country, such as passport, international driving permit, credit card and possible itinerary. Nevertheless, when it comes to travelling within Cambodia, it is best to rely on buses. This is because buses are very affordable and easily available in the country. When travelling in some of the remote areas, we can find plenty of tuk-tuks and many other modes of transportation. So, if we want to reach Cambodia in a short span with great ease, then the airlines are the best option. On the other hand, if we want to explore South East Asian regions as well, then we can choose to take an affordable flight to Bangkok and cover the rest of the journey by train.

Throughout the pandemic, millions of people moved from one place to the other. Maybe, after more than two years of the pandemic, we are also wondering if it would be safe to travel abroad.

Main Destinations of Cambodia

Cambodia's rich history and culture attracts millions of tourists from different parts of the world. Yet it is not the only thing that drives people to this Southeast Asian country. Its beautiful beaches and natural beauty are other major factors. Some of the most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia  are:

Angkor Wat (Angkor Archaeological Park)

Koh kong conservation corridor, sambor prei kuk.

Angkor Archaeological Park is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The temples of the Angkorian era are incredible in size. Angkor Wat is among the world’s must-see ancient sites. Built between 802 and 1432, Angkor Archaeological Park was the largest city in the world during the mediaeval age. Today, it is the largest religious building in the world. Built by King Suryavarman II, this ancient temple can be visited between 5 am to 6 pm.

Located in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains, the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor is the ideal place for boat tours and hiking. Encompassed with dense jungles, astounding waterfalls, and a beautiful river, Koh Kong Conservation Corridor has some eco-friendly places to stay. It also has options for homestay and guesthouse accommodation.

Phnom Penh is not only the capital of Cambodia but also its most populated city. Today, Phnom Penh has become one of the most dynamic regions of the world but it was deserted during the Khmer Rouge madness. The city has numerous historical sites that showcase the history of the country. Along with incredible architecture, it has many cafés and restaurants as well. Phnom Penh has numerous tourist attractions including the Royal Palace of Cambodia, National Museum of Cambodia, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and Wat Phnom. The city also has a variety of transportation options including trains, buses, and flights.

To spend some peaceful time in the country then Kampot is one of the regions that will provide us with much-needed relaxation time. The town is quite laid-back and has shop-house-designed infrastructure. Many tourists spend a long time in this region because of its beautiful surroundings and peaceful life. Nevertheless, Kampot also has many destinations that are worth visiting. These include Phnom Bokor National Park, Long Set Beach, and Phnom Chhnork Cave Temple.

Sambor Prei Kuk is a temple site that was established in the early seventh century. From an archaeological point of view, this pre-Angkorian temple is quite significant as it is Cambodia’s one of the oldest buildings. Some of the vital sites inside Sambor Prei Kuk include Prasat Yeay Pea, Prasat Tao, and Prasat Sambor.

Along with numerous temples, Cambodia offers its tourists a variety of adventure sports as well. Ratanakiri is one such natural region where tourists can try out a variety of sports. We can visit several villages by surpassing the long red-dirt roads that spread over Ratanakiri. This region is heaven for those who are interested in trekking. It has Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Area as well as the Virachey National Park, which is home to many animals, including bears, tigers and elephants.

Best Hill Stations/ Best Beaches

Cambodia has numerous beaches and islands across the country. The scenic beauty of these beaches allows the tourists to have a peaceful and relaxing time. Some of the most popular beaches in Cambodia include-

Saracen Bay, Koh Rong Samloem

M'pai bai, koh rong samloem, otres beach.

Ream Beach is about half an hour away from Sihanoukville city. It is a part of the Ream National Park. This is another secluded beach where we can see a few fishermen and cafes that are run by families. There is also a mangrove wetland area near the beach. Ream Beach is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of popular beaches and spend some days surrounded by nature.

Koh Rong Samloem is one of the sister islands on Sihanoukville, along with Koh Rong. Saracen Bay once used to be a sleepy fish area but now it has become one of the best tourist islands. This region is very popular among couples and younger visitors. The island has a laid-back vibe that will allow us to forget all our worries and enjoy nature.

Located on the northern side of Koh Rong Samloem, M'Pai Bai is not as crowded as Saracen Bay. Thus, it is the perfect place for those who want to escape the crowds and spend quality time in a peaceful environment. M'Pai Bai is deserted for the most part and we can find some local fishermen nearby. This area has some hostels and guest houses. We can go on a hike to explore two nearby waterfalls as well.

Even though Otres Beach is a part of the Sihanoukville area, it is not as crowded as other regions. This is because it is far from the major beach areas. Hence, we can experience the local vibe of the area. The water around Otres Beach is clearer than many other beaches. Moreover, it is surrounded by palm trees which give the place a spectacular look. Even though Cambodia is famous for its beaches, it also has a hill station. Bokor hill station is a bunch of French buildings built in the 1920s as a temperate mountain spot for colonial residents. Even though Bokor hill station was abandoned for a long time, it is now easily accessible because of recent developments. The region also has a waterfall that is usually dry in the high season but regains full flow during monsoon. Bokor Hill Station is highly popular among tourists because of its astounding views and great weather.

Places to Visit in Combodia

Cambodia has numerous temples as well as the largest religious building in the world. But there is a lot more to this country than the beaches and monuments. Choosing the right Cambodia Tour Packages will ensure that we get to explore all the must-visit places in the region and gain experiences that will be relished for a lifetime.

Prasat Preah Vihear

Tonlé sap lake.

The small town of Sen Monorom is the major tourist attraction in the Mondulkiri region. This place is ideal for those who are more inclined toward making their trip to Cambodia full of adventure. In the Mondulkiri province, there are many options for tourists to enjoy themselves, including trail-bike tours, exploring wildlife, and the popular Elephant Valley Project. Under the Elephant Valley Project, travellers can walk with the elephants of the sanctuary. It is important to keep in mind that riding the elephant is not allowed.

Tourists usually consider Siem Reap a significant part of Cambodia’s must-visit places because Angkor Archaeological Park is situated in it. However, the town has a lot more to offer. This is one of the major centres of the region. Thus, we can find a variety of tours ranging from cycling tours to cookery tours as well. We can also find numerous traditional crafts around the area. In the evening, Phare the Cambodian Circus is also organised.

While Angkor Wat may be extremely popular among tourists, we cannot miss the Prasat Preah Vihear location. Prasat Preah Vihear is an incredible temple constructed to honour Lord Shiva. It is at the top of the Dangrek Mountains and offers a break-taking view of Cambodian floodplains. It is quite close to the border of Thailand. Both nations have claimed the temple as their own. This UNESCO World Heritage Sight is a must-visit for tourists in Cambodia.

Battambang is a city in Cambodia that is perfect for those who want to spend some time away from the hustle-bustle of Phnom Penh. As compared to the capital, Battambang has a much more relaxed vibe. The northwest of Battambang is surrounded by small villages and rice fields. The city is also rich in its history as historical temples like Wat Ek Phnom, Phnom Sampeau, and Phnom Banan are quite nearby to the region. Due to all this, Battambang has become a significantly famous spot among travellers.

Tonlé Sap Lake is Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake. It is considered the most significant waterway for Cambodia. This lake is also home to 170 floating villages whose livelihood depends on it. Tonlé Sap Lake is also a vital source of food for irrigation in Cambodia. Be it shops, schools, or houses; everything is made by sticking together bamboo and barrels. Kompong Luong and Chong Kneas are some of the popular villages around it.

Kratie is the ideal place to experience the beauty of Mekong. Kratie has become popular over the years because of the dolphin-watching tours. Irrawaddy dolphins have been endangered in the Mekong. Many steps have been taken to ensure that they are protected. Tourism has played a major role as an alternative to fishing in the region.

Famous food in Combodia

Even though Cambodian cuisine has started to become popular in other parts of the world, the best way to experience the majority of Cambodian dishes is to visit the country. Thus, while planning the Cambodia trip, make sure to try out all the Cambodian cuisines. Some of the most popular dishes in the country include:

Samlor korkor

Nom banh chok/khmer noodles, kha trei svay kchai - caramelised fish with green mango.

Amok is undoubtedly one of the most popular dishes in Cambodia. Similar dishes to it can also be found in neighbouringf countries. The addition of Slok Ngor separates the taste of the Cambodian version from the rest of the world. The curry of the dish is made from kroeung and coconut milk. Initially, Amok was prepared only with snails or fish. However, over the years, chicken is also added to the dish. There are even some vegetarian versions of the dish as well.

Even though Amok is often considered the national dish of Cambodia, Samlor korkor is also extremely popular in the region as well. Samlor korkor has been a popular dish in Cambodia for hundreds of years. The great part is that it can be found even today across the country in different restaurants as well as local stalls. The soup is quite adaptable and can be varied as per the season. Even though any sort of meat can be added, pork belly and catfish are commonly used.

Nom banh chok is another Cambodian dish that is extremely popular in other parts of the world. At times, it is called Khmer Noodles in English. Nom banh chok is majorly consumed as breakfast. Thus, tourists usually find women who carry baskets that contain this dish. It is prepared with noodles and many other ingredients including fingerroot ginger, garlic, and turmeric. Quite often banana flowers, cucumbers, beans, edible leaves and flowers are out on top of the dish.

Almost everyone has seen fishes that are quite active even when they are not underwater. These fishes are frequently seen jumping from baskets, trying to escape. Well, it is none other than the striped snakehead fish, also known as Trei roh. It can walk on land. That’s why it can move even when put out of water. It is the key ingredient of this dish. Initially, the steaks are kept in a pot and then caramelised with black pepper, fish sauce, garlic, tomatoes, and palm sugar. The dish is served with Asian basil and green mango on top.

Things to do in Cambodia

From visiting numerous temples to chilling on beaches, Cambodia offers its tourists plenty of fun activities. Here is a list of things to do on a Cambodia trip :

Watching Apsara Dance Show

Explore different cambodian cuisines, witness the phare cambodian circus, visit the tuol sleng genocide museum, visit phnom penh palace.

One of the best ways to explore Cambodian culture is to watch the dance show of Apsaras in the Siem Reap region. Apsaras have always been a huge part of Hindu mythology. They used to dance in Lord Indra’s kingdom in heaven. This depicts that the Hindu culture is still deeply rooted in the Cambodian culture. Thus, watching this show will bring us even closer to the culture of Cambodia. The dance show of Apsaras is so deep-rooted in Cambodian culture that it is even drawn on the walls of Angkor Wat.

No trip is ever complete without exploring the different delicacies that the country has to offer. Thus, on our Cambodia trip, try a variety of dishes. Since the majority of these dishes are not easily available outside Cambodia, it makes much more sense to enjoy them as long as we are there. Most of the dishes in the region are non-vegetarian. Moreover, rice and noodles are commonly used in most cuisines.

Art is a major part of Cambodian culture. Hence, to truly understand the essence of Cambodian culture, we must watch the Phare Cambodian Circus. The circus showcases the rich history of the country. Moreover, the circus has earned a name for itself globally.  Throughout the circus, we will witness performances including theatre, dancing, and singing. These acts showcase the numerous stories of the country. Phare Cambodian Circus is so famous that it has become a national act. Furthermore, numerous training centres have also opened in various parts of the country to train those interested in performing in the circus. The time of Phare Cambodian Circus is from 8 am to 8 pm.

When people think that Cambodia has a rich history, their mind will likely go in the direction that everything about its past has been glorious and peaceful. However, it is not the case. Moreover, it is equally important to showcase as well as analyse the other side as well. This is where the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum plays a significant role. It is a remnant of the atrocities conducted in the Khmer regime. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum has been made in the memory of genocide initiated by Khmer rulers. It showcases the terrifying interiors and utilises the painful past to lead to a peaceful tomorrow. A trip to this museum is something that each tourist must do whenever they visit Cambodia. The museum is located in Phnom Penh and the timings are between 8 am and 5 pm.

The Royal Palace of Cambodia is something that tourists should aim to visit when choosing the Cambodia tour package. It is home to the royal family. The gigantic palace has many paintings that showcase the history of the country. Moreover, the architecture is also astounding. The timings are from 8 am to 5 pm.

Adventurous things to do

Adventurous activities are an assured way to make the Cambodia trip a memorable experience. Cambodia offers a variety of adventure activities, including mountaineering, rock climbing, sailing, fishing, hiking, and much more.

Explore different parts of the country on a moped

Before everything else, it is vital to ensure that the vehicle given to us fulfils all the safety standards. While riding around different parts of the country can be very exciting, we must follow the safety guidelines, including wearing a helmet and not driving above the given limit. Now, it is time to explore unknown territories and feel freedom. Tourists can easily rent a moto and visit different places in the country.

Take care of a bear

Sun bears and moon bears are some of the most loved animals in Cambodia. Tourists can opt for being a bear keeper for a day. We can work with the volunteers at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. Wildlife tours can be incredible, but it will never be as exciting as taking care of a bear.

Check out Kirirom’s Pine Forests

Cambodia has numerous hiking trails, but nothing beats the experience of travelling in pine forests. Kirirom’s Pine Forests will leave us with a memorable experience as they are surrounded by breathtaking waterfalls and foot trails. Thus, it is the perfect place for those who are looking to explore wildlife and do trekking.

Go around Siem Reap on a bicycle

Exploring different areas around Siem Reap on a bicycle can be quite exciting. There is no need to carry our own bicycle as plenty of businesses offer numerous biking tours. Going from one part of the city to the other by cycling will allow the tourists to witness the true beauty of Siem Reap. Witnessing the marvellous sunrise is something that we will remember for a lifetime.

Hike in Kep National Park

Kep National Park has been a major attraction for hikers as well as trekkers for a long time. This park is the perfect place irrespective of whether we are well-versed in hiking or not. As the trails are marked with arrows, even beginners can go a long way without facing any difficulties. So, visit the Kep National Park and explore the new and exciting territory in a guided manner. As we continue our journey, we will get to see great wildlife.

Interesting Facts about Cambodia

There is much more to Cambodia than amazing beaches and historical monuments. Here are some unpopular facts about Cambodia-  Cambodia is the only country with a building on its flag Cambodia is unique from other parts of the world in a variety of ways. The majority of flags around the globe usually either have similar colours & different designs or the same designs & different colours. None of more than 200 countries have a monument on their flag. Yet, Cambodia added Angkor Wat to its flag, making it the only flag with a building. Angkor Wat is the largest religious building in the world. This makes the Cambodian flag quite distinctive.

Funerals are a costly affair in the country

It can be surprising to find out that funerals in Cambodia have an average cost of USD 9000. Moreover, they go on for 49 days. Many people usually put together the money they have accumulated over time to ensure the funeral cost is covered. Some even have to sell their possessions to do so. All this is done because funerals hold immense importance in Cambodian culture.

The average age in Cambodia is less than 15

Today, many countries have a high median age. However, Cambodia is running in the opposite direction. We might be astounded to know that approximately 50% of the population of Cambodia is less than 15 years old. Furthermore, 60% of the population of this Southeast Asian nation is less than 30 years old. This is one of the reasons why Cambodia is full of young faces with a positive outlook on life. However, the reason behind such a young average age is not positive whatsoever. It is the result of genocide conducted during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. In a span of just 4 years, the population of Cambodia was reduced by 2-3 million.

Birthdays are not a big deal in Cambodia

Birthday is one of the most important days of people's life. Hence, they not only eagerly wait for it for weeks but also emphasise celebrating it in the best way possible. However, this is not the case with the majority of the population in Cambodia. Here, birthdays are not considered a major event. Some individuals do not even remember their birthdays; they are only aware of the season of their birthday.

Cambodian Culture

Cambodia has an extremely rich culture. It has been preserved by the people who have been following a variety of traditions for a long time. Gaining a deeper understanding of these cultures and traditions can make the trip to Cambodia even more worthwhile. Apart from choosing the right Cambodia tour packages, it is always better to learn more about the country so that we can enjoy our stay to the fullest. Here are some things we should know about the various culture and traditions in Cambodia:  The majority of the rural Cambodian diet consists of rice and fish

In the past, Cambodians had to deal with a shortage of food. However, the situation has improved to a great extent in the current times due to international help and political stability. Nevertheless, even today, the rural diet in Cambodia majorly includes fish and rice. Many other ingredients like mint and ginger can also be included.  People put great emphasis on family life

Even though people are attached to their families across all parts of the globe, Cambodians emphasise their families greatly. The families are generally bigger as extended family members are also closely associated. Distant relatives like uncles, aunts, and cousins usually celebrate most of the festivals together.  Most Cambodians practice their religion

Numerous temples are a clear indication that a majority of Cambodians are highly religious. Buddhism is the most followed religion in the country. Approximately 97% of people follow Theravada Buddhism in Cambodia. Even the younger individuals are highly engaged in religious activities. Most people visit temples during a variety of festivals. People also hang photos of Buddha in their homes. Superstitions are quite popular in Cambodia

Superstitions are quite common in many Asian countries, and Cambodia is no exception. Many Cambodians believe in spirits and superpowers. Superstitions have become a regular part of life for most people. For instance, whenever a new enterprise is opened, it must be blessed.  Cambodian festivals Festivals are a major part of Cambodia’s rich history and culture. Plenty of festivals are celebrated in the country throughout the year. During festivals, people come together and make the most out of it. Tourists from different parts of the world also relish these festivities. Learning more about these festivals and traditions will allow us to become a greater part of them and rejoice in them to the fullest. Moreover, we will also be able to plan the Cambodia tour packages effectively to attend the festival we want. Here are some of the most popular festivals that take place in Cambodia:

Khmer New Year

Khmer New Year is one of the most prominent festivals in Cambodia. During this festival, people with Khmer roots return to their places in order to celebrate the end of the harvest season for three days. Farmers who have worked hard all year long also take a break. Throughout the festivities, people spend time with their families and go to different temples.

King Norodom Sihamoni’s Birthday

The birth and coronation of the current monarch of Cambodia, King Norodom Sihamoni is celebrated from 13th May to 15th May each year. This day remains of great significance for Cambodians as in the memory of Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge. Hence, the people express their gratitude toward the progressive government.

Pchum Ben/Ancestor’s Day

Pchum Ben translates to “to gather together a ball of food.” It is also popular as the Festival of the Dead and Hungry Ghosts Festival. People pay respect to the seven generations of ancestors on this day. Food is also distributed as part of the festival. Cambodian Independence Day

Cambodian Independence Day is widely celebrated across the country to commemorate the end of French rule that lasted for over 90 years. This significant day is celebrated on 9th November in the Independence Monument. People from all walks of time come together to rejoice in this historical day.

Cambodian Visa for Indians

Gone are the days when getting a visa used to be stressful. Today, Indians can get an eVisa for Cambodia easily, even without reaching out to the Cambodian Embassy. eVisa is ideal for people who are interested in visiting the country as a tourist.  It is vital to understand that Indian citizens require a visa to go to Cambodia, even for a relatively short span of time. Before departure, Indians can apply for the Cambodia eVisa. With the eVisa, we can spend an entire month In Cambodia for the purpose of tourism. In case, we need to spend more than a month or are going there for any non-tourism related purpose, it is ideal to contact the Cambodian Embassy in India for more information regarding the visa. Follow these steps to get a Cambodian visa:

  • Filling the electronic visa form (for Indians)
  • Use a debit card or credit card to pay for the visa
  • Forward the visa application to be reviewed.

It is worth noting that the Cambodian visa processing is quite fast. Moreover, many Indian citizens receive the approved visa within only 3 to 4 business days via email.

There are majorly two types of visas Indians can choose from to visit Cambodia - Cambodia Tourist Visa for Indians and Cambodia Business Visas for Indians In order to receive a tourist visa, we would need a few documents including a digital photo, passport, email id, and a debit or credit card. Thus, before finalising the Cambodia package, make sure we have all the necessary documents.

Foreign Currency

Cambodia's official currency is the Cambodian Riel. However, the United States Dollar has been acting as the unofficial second currency of the country for a long time. The majority of local businesses in Cambodia would accept the USD  without any issues. Moreover, if we receive a visa on arrival, we would also be required to pay the amount in USD. This clearly shows that US dollars should be the ideal choice for international travellers.  While it is quite clear that USD will go a long way in Cambodia, many tourists still face many issues regarding a forex exchange. From getting the best rate for the bucks to choosing a reliable source, exchanging domestic currency for dollars can be complicated. Thomas Cook  can help us in solving this issue. A rate card  is available on the official website wherein we can buy and sell the currency of our choice.  When it comes to buying, tourists can also get a travel card which is much more convenient than carrying cash all the time. We can also choose to sell INR to receive the currency of our choice.  Moreover, there is an incredible option of Locked-in exchange rates. This will save us the worry of constant fluctuations in the market. The forex travel card can be loaded at the locked-in exchange rate and will ensure that the value of the amount remains the same irrespective of the fluctuations.  Thomas Cooks understands the customer's pain points and aims to come up with the best possible travel-related solutions. Thus, investing in a travel card can improve the Cambodia tour package.
