Ratings and Reviews

Now needs excessive permissions.

I don't use Okta to store passwords, but rather use it for SSO to various things we use at work. Before the latest update, I was able to use the Okta extension essentially as a set of bookmarks for work tools, and I would get signed on with SSO when clicking on the icon in the drop-down. With this latest update, the drop-down requires full permission on whatever site I'm currently on, which I refuse to give Okta. This didn't need access to that level of data work previously, and it still doesn't.

What is this app doing?

My company uses Okta for single sign on, which is fine. But in order to use the app portal, it basically forces you to use this plug in. What exactly does the plug in do? in addition to its apparent end user functionality, what else is it doing? does it log web data? are employers using it to snoop into employee browsing activity? is it sucking data and sending it anywhere? many people work at home, some people live in europe, it seems like an extension like this could run afoul of privacy concerns pretty quickly. it would be nice to have a statement from Okta on this.

Developer Response ,

Hi Mdhj, The Okta Extension App is required by Apple to install the browser plugin that allows you to securely login to applications that don’t support SAML using Single Sign-On. Essentially, the plugin allows for credentials for certain websites to be securely passed from the Okta cloud directly to the web sign-in page, without the need to store those logins on your computer. This also allows for instances where your IT may have pre-defined (shared) website credentials that they may like you to use for specific sites. It also allows you to secure your sign-in information from websites you frequently visit on to the Okta cloud, if your IT has enabled feature. The message to install the plugin will only be displayed if you have been assigned applications that require the plugin to securely sign you in. This extension does not allow employers to monitor your browsing activity, log your website data, or snoop on you. The purpose of the App is simply to install the plugin in Safari that allows you to be authenticated to certain types of websites. For more detailed information about this plugin, please visit: https://help.okta.com/en/prod/Content/Topics/Apps/Apps_Browser_Plugin.htm. Hope this helps! Okta Customer Support

Horrible dysfunction

Humanity is surely in decline and this product is another piece of evidence supporting the theory. Someone actually released this crap into the AppStore. Would it be appropriate to wish the developers some sort of an unknown to science uncurable desease? What amount of bath saults was consumed the day OKTA unleased this moster on the unmolested population? I wonder what nation on this here Earth has produced developers so unqualified to breathe, let alone make software? I feel raped. I'll make it my life's mission to retaliate.

Paul Collins (DigitalFish, Inc.) asked a question.

The Okta Plugin button is missing from my Safari toolbar. Opening the Okta Extension App shows "Okta Plugin is successfully installed". Okta is not listed in Safari's preferences pane (although 1Password is). I tried removing the Okta Extension App and reinstalling it from the App Store, but the extension is still missing from Safari. Is there a solution to this? I'm on MacOS Big Sur 11.6.7

Paul Stiniguta (Okta, Inc.)

Hello @Paul Collins (DigitalFish, Inc.)  Thank you for reacting out to our Community!

If the extension is not visible but installed on your Safari, please the doc below which should provide the details to make it visible again on your browser:

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safariservices/safari_web_extensions/troubleshooting_your_safari_web_extension

Hope this helps and if this answered your question, please mark this as Best Answer!

Paul Collins (DigitalFish, Inc.)

I followed the instructions on that page to allow unsigned extensions in Safari, but that did not make the extension appear in the Extensions pref pane. All the other directions on that page apply to developers actually building the extension.

As a test, I installed another company's Safari extension from the Mac App Store. That worked--the extension appeared in Safari Extensions pref pane and I could enable it.

So I'm stuck. Okta is still not listed in Safari Extensions pref pane.

Deactivated User (qgaha)

Exact same situation here. Why can't it install like a normal extension? Why does it even need an app, which then (fails to) add the extension to Safari?

@Paul Stiniguta (Okta, Inc.)

FYI, I never got it to work until I replaced the Mac, and I suspect there were hardware problems (I'm finally taking it in for service tomorrow). There were other add-on apps that didn't work either (Box Drive).

If it weren't Safari, I'd suggest delete and reinstall Safari, but I don't know how to do that with OS- built-in apps like this. It wouldn't hurt to run Disk Repair on your startup drive when you can leave it for a half-hour or so, in case this is indication of a wider problem.

As to normal extensions, I think this is how extensions work in Safari now. Good luck!

That's helpful to know Paul! Hope they find the issue. I ended up using Chrome as a workaround despite its weaker privacy.

The Okta Extension may be on “auto-update”. Some versions of the software will automatically update. Check to see if the Okta Extension is up to date. You can update the software by clicking on the Edit button (three dots) in the top right corner of your browser, then select Manage Extensions under 'Okta', and then click the Update button.

Try deleting the domain/extension and reinstalling

Citrix Workspace app for Windows offers Plugins management capability that makes the Citrix Workspace app a single client app required on the end point to install and manage agents such as Secure Access Agent and End Point Analysis (EPA) plug-in.

With this capability, administrators can easily deploy and manage required agents from a single management console.

Plugins management includes the following steps:

  • Administrators must specify the agents required on end users’ devices in the Global App Configuration Service. Administrators can specify Secure Access Agent and Endpoint Analysis (EPA) agent.
  • Citrix Workspace app fetches the list of agents from Global App Configuration Service.
  • Based on the list fetched from Global App Configuration service, Citrix Workspace app downloads the agent packages through the auto-update service. If the agent is not previously installed on the end point, Citrix Workspace app triggers the installation of the agent. If the agent is already installed, Citrix Workspace app triggers an update to the agent (if the version of the downloaded agent is higher than the installed version.)

Citrix Workspace app ensures to automatically update the agents whenever an update is available in the future.

Citrix Workspace app automatically signs in to the agents with the Citrix Workspace credentials.

Notes: If the EPA and ZTNA plugins doesn’t exists, the plugins are downloaded and installed while adding the store or account for the first time. If the store or account and plug-ins already exists and the installer contains a higher version, plug-ins are updated during the auto-update cycle.

The following diagram illustrates the workflow:

Plugins management

Important: Global App configuration service is required to enable the Plugins management feature. For the cloud stores, Global app configuration service UI can be accessed in the Workspace Configuration section on the Citrix Cloud admin portal. For more information, see Configure Citrix Workspace app . • Using Global App Configuration service API - Use this method to customize installation with parameters to control version, deployment modes, auto update intervals etc.
  • Enable Plugins management using Global App Configuration service UI

This method is applicable for cloud stores only, agents (EPA / Secure Access , Zoom plug-in, or WebEx plug-in) can be deployed by the admins using the UI.

  • Sign in to Citrix Cloud .

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.
