Step-by-step guide to obtaining a visa for Egypt

This article covers basic questions related to obtaining an Egyptian tourist visa, such as the documents required, the validity period, countries that qualify for e-visa, etc.

Step 1: Check If You Need a Visa for Egypt

Travelers from most countries in the world (including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia) must have the correct documentation before arriving in Egypt. Having all your paperwork done properly in advance saves time and unnecessary expenses.

On entering Egypt, the officer at border control will check your passport as well as other travel documents, such as your visa and additional documents demonstrating your purpose of travel and nationality.

More specifically (updated March 30, 2020), passport holders from the following countries and territories may enjoy a visa-free visit to Egypt for up to 90 days:

  • Macao, China
  • Hong Kong, China
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Lebanon — at Sharm el Sheikh International Airport, Hurghada Airport, or Alexandria Borg El Arab Airport (if arriving by a charter flight)
  • Malaysia (up to 14 days)

Passport holders of the following countries may also enjoy a visa-free visit under certain conditions:

  • Afghanistan (provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age)
  • Algeria (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • China (provided that the traveler holds a return/onward ticket, hotel reservation confirmation in a 4- or 5-star hotel, and the equivalent of USD 2,000)
  • Libya (provided that the traveler is a female national or a resident of Butnan District; on Sundays and Mondays).
  • Jordan (provided that the traveler holds a normal 5-year passport, and the passport does not contain a stamp on page 60 from the Jordanian Registration Office)
  • Lebanon (for all of Egypt, provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age; a visa is not required for Alexandria and South Sinai, for travelers of all ages)
  • Morocco (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • Sudan (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is a female national)
  • South Sudan (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is a female national)
  • Tunisia (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • Yemen (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is traveling for medical reasons)
  • Palestinian (provided that the travel document has been issued by Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan for a female traveler, or for a male traveler who is ≥40 or ≤18 years of age)
  • Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belize, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Moldova (except female travelers between 15 to 35 years of age), Nicaragua, Russia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Turkey (for those travelling as part of a tourist group that includes at least five citizens of one of the nationalities; all travelers should hold a return ticket and pre-booked accommodation and have a signed guarantee letter from a travel agency in Egypt)
  • Sons and daughters born to an Egyptian father (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Qatar), or to an Egyptian mother if born after July 25, 2004 (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Qatar, and Yemen), and to wives of Egyptian nationals who hold proof of marriage (except nationals of Syria, Iraq, Morocco, and Qatar)

Passport holders of countries and territories that are not listed are required to obtain an Egypt visa to visit the country.

Consulate Visa

Visitors who hold passports from countries not eligible for an e-visa or visa on arrival must apply for a visa in person. A visa approval — which takes several weeks to process — may be sought from competent authorities in Egypt.

Step 3. Prepare the Required Documents

  • Completed and signed visa application form with one photograph stapled to the form and one copy of the completed application form with the photograph
  • Two 2x2″ (51x51 mm) recent high-definition passport photographs taken against a white background (the photograph must be no more than six months old)
  • Actual passport (valid for at least six months, with an empty page for the visa) and two copies of the information page
  • Two photocopies of a Green Card (front and back) or valid US visa (for travelers who are residents of the US)
  • Other supporting documents, such as copies of your round-trip tickets and itinerary. If you are a resident alien in the country from which you are traveling, you may need to provide a copy of your residency card.
  • A valid email address (to register and apply for the e-visa)
  • Passport valid for at least six months from date of arrival in Egypt
  • Valid debit or credit card (for payment)
  • Host information (such as hotel or local contact)
  • Travel itinerary (checked on arrival)
  • Hotel bookings / details about places on the itinerary, if traveling as a tourist (checked on arrival)
  • Applicant must be from one of the eligible countries
  • Passport valid for at least six months, with at least two blank pages
  • Payment in cash (USD) only

Step 4. Pay the Fee and Collect your Egyptian Visa

For the e-visa, the fee is paid when you submit your application online. You can simply print it out and present it at the port of entry.

The cost (charged on your card) is USD 25 per person for a single-entry visa (tourist), and USD 60 per person for a multiple-entry visa (tourist). You will obtain your visa in about 2–8 weeks depending on your location and nationality.

For a visa on arrival, the cost is USD 25 (single entry). You may only pay in cash, as credit and debit cards are not accepted at the airport terminal. After making the payment, you will receive a visa sticker which you will need to present at the immigration desk to gain entry to Egypt.

For the consulate visa, the cost for a tourist visa ranges between USD 15–30 depending on your country of origin. Please be aware that most consulates/embassies accept only cash or cashier's checks. It normally takes about 1–8 weeks for the application to be processed, depending on your location and nationality.

When to Apply for Your Egypt Visa

For the e-visa, travelers must create an e-visa application at least seven days prior to departure, according to the Ministry of Interior of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

For the consulate visa, we suggest you submit your application at least six weeks before your departure for Egypt.

A visa on arrival may be applied for at border control prior to queuing up for immigration. Simply bring your documents, tickets, cash, and cards along with you.

Egypt Visa: Everything You Need to Know

Egypt Tor Logo

Egypt is a fascinating country that attracts millions of tourists every year with its ancient pyramids, temples, museums, and natural wonders. If you are planning to visit Egypt, you may need a visa to enter the country, depending on your nationality and purpose of travel. In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about Egypt visa, including the entry requirements, the covid entry requirements, the visa options for Indians, the visa on arrival, the e-visa, and the vfs global services.

Egypt Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for Egypt vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for. Generally, you will need the following documents to enter Egypt:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages.
  • A visa or an entry permission stamp, unless you are exempt from visa requirements.
  • A proof of accommodation or a tour booking, if requested by the immigration officers.
  • A proof of sufficient funds or a return ticket, if requested by the immigration officers.

You can check if you need a visa to enter Egypt by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Egypt Covid Entry Requirements

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Egypt has implemented some additional entry requirements for travelers. These include:

  • A negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours before departure. The test result must be in English or Arabic and have a QR code. Children under six years old are exempt from this requirement.
  • A health declaration form filled online at least two days before arrival. You can access the form at the official Egypt Health Entry Portal. You will receive a QR code after submitting the form, which you need to show at the airport.
  • A health insurance that covers covid-19 treatment in Egypt.

These covid entry requirements may change at short notice, so you should check the latest information with your airline or the official Egypt Tourism Authority  before traveling.

Egypt Visa for Indians

Indian citizens who want to visit Egypt for tourism purposes have two options to obtain a visa: online or on arrival. The online option is the Egypt e-Visa, which allows you to apply for a single-entry or a multiple-entry tourist visa in advance. The single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry e-Visa is valid for 180 days and allows multiple stays of up to 30 days each. You can apply for an e-Visa at least seven days before your trip by filling an online application form and paying a fee of 25 USD for a single-entry e-Visa or 60 USD for a multiple-entry e-Visa. You will receive your e-Visa by email and you need to print it out and present it with your passport at the airport.

The on-arrival option is the Egypt Visa on Arrival, which allows you to obtain a single-entry tourist visa at the airport upon arrival. You need to wait in line at the visa on arrival window, fill out an application form, provide your passport and a photo, and pay a fee of 25 USD in cash (preferably in US dollars). You will receive a visa sticker that you need to attach to your passport. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days.

Egypt Visa on Arrival

The Egypt Visa on Arrival is available for citizens of several countries who are eligible to visit Egypt for tourism purposes. You can check if you are eligible for a visa on arrival by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. To obtain a visa on arrival, you need to follow these steps:

  • Arrive at one of the international airports in Egypt where the visa on arrival service is available. These include Cairo International Airport, Hurghada International Airport, Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, Luxor International Airport, and Borg El Arab International Airport.
  • Go to the visa on arrival window before reaching the immigration counters.
  • Fill out an application form and provide your passport and a photo.
  • Pay a fee of 25 USD in cash (preferably in US dollars). You should have the exact amount ready to avoid delays.
  • Receive a visa sticker and attach it to your passport.
  • Proceed to the immigration counters and present your passport and visa sticker.

The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not extendable and it does not allow multiple entries. If you want to avoid the hassle of waiting in line and paying in cash, you can apply for an e-Visa online instead.

Egypt e-Visa

The Egypt e-Visa is an electronic visa that allows you to apply for a tourist visa online before traveling to Egypt. It is a convenient and fast way to obtain a visa without visiting an embassy or consulate or waiting in line at the airport. The e-Visa is available for citizens of 74 countries who are eligible to visit Egypt for tourism purposes. You can check if you are eligible for an e-Visa by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. • Log on to the Egypt e-Visa Portal.
  • Select Apply Now.

  • Print out your e-Visa and present it with your passport at the airport.

The e-Visa is valid for 90 days for a single-entry visa or 180 days for a multiple-entry visa. It allows a stay of up to 30 days per entry. Any advantages of one over the other for a U.S. passport holder?

I believe the cost is the same, so does it make sense to save some time in the airport by getting e-visa ahead of time?

I'll be arriving in CAI (T1) around midnight.

Thanks in advance.

Many posters here have recorded difficulty using the evisa system.

Unless you're proficient with computers or Bill Gates lives next door to you and is a good neighbour, you may find yourself spending a lot of time with the evisa system.....

On the other hand visa on arrival is quick and simple,

You buy a sticker for USD 25 per person at the bank kiosk prior to Immigration, then join the Immigration Queue. We've never waited for more than a couple of minutes to get our stickers.

When it's your turn, you hand your passport, the sticker, and your duly completed landing card to the Immigration Officer who then sticks the sticker in your passport, stamps it, and scribbles in the expiry date 30 days from the day of entry which is counted as Day #1.

Everyone gets in the same line. No special line for evisa holders.

Then everyone gets to cool their heels at the baggage claim b/c each piece of checked luggage gets x-rayed before release to passengers.

As long as flights are arriving, the visa on arrival bank kiosks selling the visa stickers are open. So you'll be good at midnight.

Visa on Arrival takes 30 seconds 👌🏽

Visa on arrival is much easier and doesn’t take time.

+1 for Visa on Arrival for all the reasons mentioned above and from personal experience.

If you are lucky, you don't even have to peel the sticker yourself and will get it into your passport as a free of charge service...

Thank you all for your replies. Looks like VOA is the way to go.

We got landing cards on MS and LH last year. Two separate trips to Cairo last year.

No experience with "budget" airlines .

There are cards in arrival hall just before Immigration.

I obtained an E-Visa for my most recent visit and, while not quite as frustrating a process as it used to be; they now send you an email letting you know if you've answered a question incorrectly, and give you a 48 hour grace period to correct the error, the visa on arrival is still a lot less hassle, while you only save a couple of minutes getting through immigration, with the E-Visa.

Thanks for the update 👍🏼 looks like they’ve actually noticed people are opting for voa cos their evisa isnt working properly!!

The E-Visa site is a scam!

If you try, like many have, to get a visa through the site; http://visa2egypt.gov.eg , you will not get one..

But they will charge you $25 for trying.

I have spoken to multiple people that have tried (me included) and paid and did not get a visa.

So DO NOT use the site, but get one on arrival, also $25.

Egypt Visa on Arrival

Egypt Visa on Arrival

Travellers can queue and pay for a visa on arrival in Egypt. Visa on arrival facilities have been available at Egyptian ports of entry for many years.

The alternative to the visa on arrival is the Egypt e-Visa . The modern online system was introduced in 2017 to streamline the visa application process.

If you’re unsure whether to apply for an Egyptian visa online or on arrival, you can use the information on this page to make an informed decision.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Eligible travellers can obtain an Egyptian tourist visa on arrival at immigration kiosks at any of the airport terminals .

If you have not applied for a visa in advance need to:

  • Wait in line at the visa on arrival window
  • Fill out the visa application form and provide documents
  • Pay the visa on arrival fee in cash
  • Attach the Egypt visa sticker to the passport

The visa on arrival must be paid for in one of the 3 accepted currencies (USD, EUR, or GBP) . Card payment is not accepted. You should aim to have the exact amount ready to pay for the Egypt visa .

If you wish to pay for your visa by card, you need to apply online. All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

You can stay in the country for up to 30 days with an Egyptian visa on arrival .

Which countries can get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Nationals of several countries are eligible to request a visa on arrival in Egypt.

Citizens of some countries are only eligible if they already have a valid visa issued by one of the following countries:

  • New Zealand
  • Any Schengen Area country

If you can apply for the Egyptian e-Visa, then you are also eligible for a visa on arrival. However, you can save time on arrival at the airport by arranging the visa in advance.

Where can you get an Egypt visa on arrival?

You can apply for an Egyptian visa on arrival at border control when arriving in Egypt .

It is currently not advised that travelers cross land borders or checkpoints, as there is not always up-to-date information concerning which checkpoints and border crossings are open or issue a visa on arrival.

International checkpoints where you can get a visa on arrival for Egypt:

  • Cairo International Airport, Cairo
  • Hurghada International Airport, Hurghada
  • St Catherine International Airport, St Catherina
  • Borg El Arab International Airport, Alexandria
  • Sharm El Sheikh International Airport
  • Luxor Airport International Airport

Israeli citizens can now obtain a visa on arrival for South Sinai if they arrange their trip through approved travel agencies.

While visas on arrival are generally only issued at the above airports, the e-Visa for Egypt is accepted at air, land, and sea borders . Passengers with an e-Visa can head straight to border control at the airport.

Can I get a visa on arrival at any Egyptian border?

The visa on arrival is only available at the international airports in Egypt listed above. If you plan to enter Egypt by land, you will need to obtain a visa before traveling .

It's important to check the specific visa requirements for your country of origin and make sure you have all the necessary documents before traveling to Egypt by land. Note that not all border crossings allow entry for foreign tourists , so it's important to check the regulations and restrictions at land borders before traveling.

How much does a visa on arrival in Egypt cost?

You have to pay the visa on arrival fee in cash—British pounds, US dollars, and Euros are accepted. To avoid delays, you should have the exact amount on arrival at the border .

Following the visa requirements and providing the right information will help you to obtain your visa on arrival. However, presenting a valid passport and paying the visa fee is no guarantee of entry .

Difference between Egypt e-Visa and Visa On Arrival

The main difference between the tourist visa on arrival and the electronic visa is that e-Visa applicants obtain the permit online , in advance. If you opt for the visa on arrival, you have to wait until you arrive in Egypt to apply.

For greater peace of mind, many tourists prefer to arrange their visa before travelling. You are not guaranteed a visa on arrival at the border.

The e-Visa is also a convenient choice given that you can complete and submit the application from home , rather than at the airport.

Both the e-Visa and the visa on arrival allow you to stay in Egypt for up to 30 days . Single and multiple-entry online visas are available.

One other difference is that, as mentioned above, you must pay the visa on arrival fee in cash. Electronic visa applicants pay securely online by card.

Egypt e-Visa, the convenient tourism alternative to the visa on arrival

There a few basic visa requirements that you must meet to obtain an Egypt e-Visa . Firstly, you must be from one of the eligible countries, such as United Kingdom , Australia , Canada , the United States , and many European nations.

Secondly, it is necessary to have the following :

  • A passport with 6 months remaining from the date of entry
  • A credit or debit card to pay the e-Visa fee
  • An up-to-date email address to receive the electronic visa

The application form involves entering some basic personal information (such as your name, address, date of birth, and passport details), and answering some simple security-related questions. The process is safe and information is encrypted and secure.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the application form. After the application has been processed, the visa is sent to you by email. You should print a copy of the visa to present at Egyptian border control .
