Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April.  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May.

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

NOTE:  Booking for summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

Most international travelers take a plane to get to the Philippines.  Although there are many international airports throughout the Philippines, the main hub for most airlines is in Manila , the capital city of the Philippines.  The following is a list of the international airports in the Philippines.

Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the country’s main international airport.  This airport has a bad reputation for delays due to congestion and is often referred to as one of the worst airports in the world. 

Mactan-Cebu International Airport is the second busiest airport in the Philippines, and a major domestic and international hub in the Central Visayas region for Philippine Airlines , AirAsia , and Cebu Pacific . Passengers can connect to a long list of domestic destinations which is comparable to the route network out of Manila . It currently serves international flights from major international hubs in Asia such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Tokyo, and Seoul. In addition, there are also flights to Dubai and Doha operated by Emirates and Qatar Airways .

Clark International Airport is a former US Air Force base located 50 miles north of Manila. It is the closest current alternate airport to Manila, where AirAsia announced it would base its Philippine operations. International destinations include Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, China, and Seoul. While it has a broad range of domestic destinations, the routes are limited so domestic connections may be a bit problematic.

The Davao (Francisco Bangoy) International Airport is the third busiest in the Philippines and serves a handful of domestic destinations. Both Cebu Pacific and Silk Air operate flights to Singapore.  AirAsia operates flights to/from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Completed in 2007, the new Iloilo International Airport   serves as a hub for Cebu Pacific . The airline operates flights to Hong Kong and Singapore from the largest city in the Western Visayas . Guests can arrive at the airport to take a six hour bus ride to Caticlan/ Boracay . However, travellers can access the resort island through either Caticlan Airport or Kalibo Airport .

While Bacolod Airport is not designated as an international airport, it has charter flights to/from Seoul, South Korea. That route is currently served by Philippine Airlines on a seasonal basis.

Tagbilaran is the capital of Bohol where the previous airport resided. A new international airport on Panglao island opened in 2018 called Bohol-Panglao International Airport .  Philippine Airlines operates flights to Seoul, South Korea. Local officials expect more flights to come after the new airport opens.

Kalibo International Airport benefits from its distance to Boracay , as it is the closest international airport to the resort island. The airport serves a broad range of Asian hubs such as Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur. Upon arriving, passengers can take a two hour bus ride to the Caticlan boat jetty on their way to the shores of Boracay.

Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa  International Airport serves Puerto Princesa City and the surrounding area and is also Palawan ‘s primary airport. The new airport was opened recently to meet the growing number of tourists from within the Philippines and from abroad to visit the natural wonders found on the island. International services are still relatively new here, though are expected to grow over the next few years. For now, Philippine Airlines operates the only international route from Palawan – to Taipei, Taiwan.

Located in the northern province of Ilocos Norte in Luzon, Laoag International Airport is designated an International airport with regular chartered flights to China. China Eastern Airlines operates a flight to Guangzhou, China. Philippine Airlines operates the only domestic flights to the city from Manila .

Getting to the Philippines by land is impossible since it is surrounded by water, land connection to neighboring countries is non-existence.

Traveling by sea from any country to the Philippines is not very common. In fact, the only route a foreign tourist can take is from Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia to Zamboanga through Aleson Shipping Lines. Usually, there is only one trip every week, Tuesdays for Sabah to Zamboanga, and Mondays for Zamboanga – Sabah.

GETTING AROUND

There are several modes of transportation in the Philippines.  Modes of transportation vary from city to city and in the provinces.  The following are the modes of transportation that are generally available throughout the Philippines.

There are few businesses where you can rent a bicycle to get around the local city, town, or municipality and neighboring towns.

Buses are not used to get around most cities. More often, buses are used to get in the city from other towns and cities, and vice versa.

It won’t take too much effort to find a car for hire. Rate starts at 2,000 PHP ($40 USD) and can go higher depending on the type and model of the car. The cost comes with free fuel, professional driver, and insurance.

Car Rentals

To rent a self-drive car, one needs to have a valid driver’s license and ID. Some companies even ask for proof of billing and have a minimum age requirement. Most companies require full payment of rental and cash bond which is usually 5,000 PHP ($100 USD). For foreigners, a passport may be required. Rate starts at 1,500 PHP ($30 USD).

Jeepneys are used when traveling outside the city limit. They have set routes so make sure to check out the route of the vehicle before getting into it.  Fare ranges from 5 PHP ($ 0.1 USD) to 30 PHP ($0.6 USD) depending on the origin and destination.

Renting a motorcycle for a day or throughout your stay in the city can give you more freedom to go wherever you want at your own time. Motorcycle rental starts at 250 PHP ($5 USD) per day and can go higher depending on the model or type of motorcycle. Helmet and insurance are usually included. Most cities and municipalities have rental shops.  Some rental companies deliver the unit to your hotel.

Motorized Outrigger (Bangka)

Motorized Outrigger or Bangkas and are also known as pump boats. Bangkas are glorified water taxis made of traditional building materials like wood and bamboo. They are surprisingly sturdy boats that can withstand rough seas to an extent. Bangkas are the cheapest form of ferry transport and most often used for short-distances.

Ride Sharing

Ride-sharing is available in a few of the larger cities but not common in most of the Philippines.

Shuttles are typically used by hotels to transport their guests.

Taxis are used only in the larger cities.  The Grab Taxi app is available in only a few of the larger cities.

Trains are only available in Manila to Calamba, Laguna up to Lucena City, Quezon .

The tricycle is the main mode of transportation when getting around most of the Philippines.  You can simply hail one just outside your hotel, restaurants, business establishments, and tourists attractions.  Minimum fare for short distance rides is 10 ($.20 USD) per person

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   Airbnb  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , Booking.com, and AirBnB. 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found in the city.  If you are exploring outside the city limits or the neighboring islands, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and some budget accommodations only accept cash.

Staying Connected 

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around P50 ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth P50 ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands  or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Don’t Forget 

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from/for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age at 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it… don’t get frustrated… but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

You can enjoy Boracay all year round, but the best season to experience the island and its beaches are from December to May, the dry season in the Philippines.

You would be able to walk around the powdery white sand beaches of Boracay while taking in the warm summer sun. A lot of locals and international travelers visit the island during this time as well, so you can expect bars to be lively at night. 

Boracay’s peak season is from March to May, the country’s summer months. During this period, Boracay becomes the go-to beach destination for locals.

National holidays such as Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, and Lent or Holy Week (from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday) are also peak seasons in Boracay. 

No matter what time of the year you choose, the weather will never be too chilly or too hot. The average high temperature is approximately 30 °C, while the average lows are at around 25 °C. The hottest month in Boracay usually falls from March to June, while the wettest month often falls from August to October.

How to Get to Boracay 

Boracay is accessible from the major cities of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three primary island groups of the Philippine archipelago .  

Before traveling to Boracay, make sure you have a printed voucher from your pre-booked accredited Boracay resorts and hotels . You will be denied entry to the island if you don’t hold a voucher from your resort or hotel.

Caticlan airport to/from boracay hotel | shared roundtrip boracay transfers (mph), shared boracay caticlan airport to or from any boracay resort land & sea transfers, iloilo city to or from boracay caticlan jetty port | iloilo to boracay transfers.

Going to Caticlan Jetty Port 

The main jump-off point is Caticlan Jetty Port, but there are different ways to get there. Here are four transport options when traveling to Caticlan Jetty Port:

It is the fastest route when going to Boracay. It is also the most accessible since flights to Boracay  come from different parts of the Philippines (including Manila to Boracay flights ) and even several countries outside the Philippines.

If you’re coming from Manila, the capital of the Philippines located in Luzon, take a 1-hour domestic flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Caticlan. You can also easily book  Boracay to Manila flights . Flying in from Clark to Boracay via Caticlan is also an option if you’re coming from the Northern part of Luzon or if you want to avoid the traffic in Manila. Clark to Boracay flights are usually cheaper than Manila.

If you’re coming from the Visayas, there are direct Cebu to Boracay flights from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. If you’re coming from Mindanao, there are direct flights from Davao Francisco Bangoy International Airport to Caticlan. From Caticlan Airport, take a 10 to 15 minute tricycle ride going to Caticlan Jetty Port.

Kalibo Airport 

A flight to Kalibo in Aklan, a more significant island near Boracay, is significantly cheaper than a direct flight to Caticlan. However, you will need to travel for 2 hours from Kalibo Airport to Caticlan Jetty Port.

When you land at the Kalibo Airport, you will find a multitude of transportation options that will take you to the Caticlan Jetty Port. Be sure to check whether it’s cost-effective or if it will be more expensive for you. Your land travel options to Caticlan include riding a bus or van.  

By Ferry 

Most locals ride a ferry going to Boracay as it's much cheaper. If you don't mind traveling for long hours or a couple of days, then this mode of transportation may be for you.

Batangas Pier

If you’re coming from Manila or Southern Luzon, you can go to Boracay by sea through the 2Go Travel ferry. It takes about 9 hours from Batangas Pier to Caticlan Jetty Port. From Manila, you will need to board a bus to Batangas Pier from the Cubao or Pasay bus terminals.

Your  2Go Travel  fare, on the other hand, will depend on the accommodations you choose. 

By Direct RoRo Vessel 

If you would like to take the more scenic but much longer trip to Boracay, you can ride the Roll On, Roll Off (RoRo). RoRo ships are vessels that are designed to carry wheeled vehicles. 

By Bus from Manila and Board a RoRo

Several bus companies are maintaining the Manila-Caticlan route. You can hop on a bus from either the Cubao or Pasay terminal. Your total travel time for this route is approximately 13 hours, excluding the boarding time between trips.

Cubao/Pasay to Batangas Pier (2 hours)

RoRo trip from Batangas Pier to Calapan, Mindoro (2 to 3 hours)

Land travel from Calapan to Roxas Port, Mindoro (2 to 3 hours)

RoRo trip from Roxas Port to Caticlan Jetty Port (4 to 5 hours)

By Private Car from Manila and Board a RoRo 

You can also take the RoRo route using your own or hired car. It can be a good option when traveling in a big group or with your family and if you don’t mind the long travel hours. The same bus route will apply, except that you will drive to the Batangas Pier, and you must book your RoRo tickets on your own when you get there.

You can’t charter your vehicle into Boracay Island, so you need to leave your car at the Caticlan Jetty Port for a parking fee per night. Depending on the size of your vehicle, this may cost you a lot. You also need to pay for the passenger and terminal fees during vessel transfers.

After the registration, you will take a short ferry ride to Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay Island. From here, you can take another tricycle or your hotel’s private van to your chosen accommodations.

If you’re a solo traveler, it’s better to join a group so you can save more money on transportation. 

Getting Around Boracay      

The primary public transportation vehicles in Boracay are electric or motorized tricycles, motorbikes, and shared or private tours. Depending on where you're staying and your budget, it's essential to take note of the following types of transportation for a more convenient getaway.

You can explore some of the parts of the island by walking around. Just make sure to bring a handy map or download an offline map with you so you'll know how to go to the tourist spots in your itinerary. There are walking and hiking trails, too, if you plan to trek to farther places such as Mount Luho.

By Tricycle

The tricycle is the standard type of transportation in Boracay, especially if you're traveling from one station to another. Take note that during off-peak hours, special rides (private) might be the only ones available in the area and can be much more expensive than the regular ones (shared). Make sure to bring enough cash with you and ask how much you'll be paying beforehand to avoid any extra charges.

By Mountain Bike/Motorbike

If you're passing by tricycles, chances are you can see motorbikes moving around the area too. It's not regulated, but many locals use it because of the convenience it offers. You can also rent one if you want! It gives you the freedom to check out the other tourist attractions on the island without having to pay extra for a driver.

By Shared/Private Tours

If you're not keen on commuting, there are various Boracay tours  that include hotel pick-up and drop-off. It's hassle-free and convenient, especially if you're in a big group.

You can’t enter the island without a printed booking confirmation from your chosen resorts or hotels in Boracay. But before booking your accommodation, make sure that the establishment is on the Department of Tourism’s Accreditation List.

Beach Resorts

Most travelers in Boracay stay at beach resorts . It is more convenient because you get easy access to the beaches. Resorts are also a good place to stay if you're on your honeymoon in the Philippines . Most of their amenities also focus on creating a relaxing atmosphere. Depending on your resort, you might get access to luxurious spas and indoor pools.

If you're looking for a more comfortable place to stay, then it might be best to stay at a hotel. In Boracay, you can find a lot of this type of accommodation; luxury accommodations (some of which offer  Philippine luxury vacation packages ), mid-range, and budget hotels are all available, some even offering free cancellation. Most basic amenities can be found in hotels, such as en-suite bathrooms, minibars, and free WiFi.

For budget backpackers, staying at a hostel is best. Hostels have dorm-type rooms and single rooms. The common denominator is they usually offer shared bathrooms only. 

Neighborhoods and Areas

There are barangays and towns in Boracay, but when it comes to distinguishing the different areas on the island, the stations in White Beach act as a map for both locals and tourists. White Beach is divided into three sections: Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3. There is also an area called Station 0, where resorts like Crimson Resort and Spa Boracay have the advantage of offering more private stays.

The island is known for its powdery white sand and gorgeous, pristine beaches. Even though it's a small island, you can’t reach all the beaches of Boracay on foot. You can either join Boracay island hopping tours or ride a tricycle going to other beaches. 

Boracay White Beach - It stretches about 4 kilometers, and walking along its shores should be part of your itinerary! Walk towards Station 1, and you’ll see Willy’s Rock. It’s a must-see grotto that you won’t miss. Go Beyond Station 1, and you’ll find Steve’s Cliff, where a foreign hotel owner was buried. His grave can even be seen from the beach.

Diniwid Beach - This is much less crowded than Station 1 or Station 2 of White Beach. Lounge around and swim at Diniwid Beach, but make sure to head back to Station 1 before high tide.

D’Talipapa, a 10-minute walk from D’Mall, has souvenir shops as well, but it’s more known as a seafood restaurant haven. You can buy the freshest catch in their wet market and have them cook it for you.  

There’s another thing you need here: an adventurous spirit! While walking along the beach, you’ll see various water sports available for you to experience. You can try banana boat riding, jet skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, or helmet diving in Boracay!

D’Talipapa  - Buy fresh seafood and other main ingredients from the wet market and have one of the family-owned restaurants in D’Talipapa cook it the way you want!

The Philippine government is taking serious steps to preserve the beauty and natural resources in Boracay. As tourists enjoying the breathtaking island, it’s our responsibility to comply with the new guidelines.

Please take note that you can only enter Boracay with a proper reservation at DOT-accredited accommodations. Make sure to print your booking confirmation. No booking, no entry! It is essential because, according to Boracay's new rules, only a limited number of tourists may stay on the island.

While a lot of the restaurants, resorts, and hotels in Boracay accept credit cards, it is still best to bring enough cash with you. Most ATMs and money exchange centers are around Station 2.

Drinking is not allowed on White Beach, which is why beachfront parties are banned. You can only drink alcoholic beverages inside the approved bars. Dining by the beach is also prohibited. Smoking is not allowed on the beach, but you can find designated smoking areas to avoid penalties.

Don’t light a campfire by the beach. Any open fire by the beach is prohibited. And most of all, don’t litter. Pick up after yourself and throw your trash in the right garbage receptacle.

It’s easy to dismiss Manila as a tourist destination. Most travelers see it only as a jump-off point to the country’s stunning islands. Outsiders may find it inexplicable, but I love Manila. It’s not perfect — far from it — but it is my home. It has been for 15 years now. Even when most of my friends have moved on to other places, I stay. Even now that I work online and I can choose to be anywhere else, I stay . Why? Because there’s much to love about Manila and its surrounding provinces.

Sure, Metro Manila is big, dense, and crazy. Just when you have just started exploring, you get lost in the crowd, choke in the pollution, or drown in her constant nagging. But those who make it past her sins are rewarded with an opportunity to appreciate her virtues. So here’s a travel guide to help you get close and personal with this underrated city.

UNDERSTANDING MANILA

Manila is the capital of the Philippines. But it is just one of the many cities that make up the National Capital Region , which is more commonly called Metro Manila . Outside this hub, what people refer to when they say “Manila” isn’t just Manila City but the region as a whole.

Metro Manila is composed of 16 individual cities and one municipality. It is the political, economic, academic and transportation center of the country. Its registered population is at 12 million, but the reality is, because many workers from surrounding provinces also study or work here, there are way more people moving around at any given time. The problem is, there is no reliable transportation system in place. This is a big problem.

Metro Manila is vast, and there is so much to see in many of its corners. However, getting from point A to B often proves challenging if you don’t know your way around. But what it lacks in this aspect, it makes up for with its people. Like most Filipinos, Manila residents are friendly, helpful, and hospitable. Language barrier isn’t a concern because almost everyone understands and speaks English.

Manila has been trading with the Chinese and Indians way before Western colonization. Because of its strategic location, it has been invaded many times: by the Spaniards, the British, the Americans, and the Japanese. It became the most heavily destroyed city after World War II, next only to Warsaw. Today, influences from all these groups are still visible. The city is still predominantly Roman Catholic, which is Spain’s doing. Chinese and Indian elements are engraved in the language and cuisine. Give yourself a minute here and you’ll find that the American influence is all around, from the educational system to pop culture.

• Language : Tagalog and English are the most widely spoken.
• Time zone: UTC+8 (Philippine Standard Time). Same time as Singapore and Malaysia; one hour behind Japan.
• Currency : Philippine Peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 = USD 2, EUR 1.75, SGD 2.75, MYR 8.25, IDR 28,200 (as of March 2020).
• Modes of payment : Cash. Many restaurants, hotels, and stores accept credit cards, but public transportation and smaller establishments accept only cash.

WHERE TO STAY IN MANILA

As mentioned earlier, Metro Manila is huge! And key attractions are a bit far apart, which makes it even harder to choose where to stay.

But let’s narrow it down to four ideal options:

• Manila , the capital city and seat of government. It’s where historic sites, like Intramuros, can be found. Most cheap accommodations are concentrated in Malate and Ermita areas.
• Makati , where the central business district is located. Makati is always my top recommendation to those traveling to Manila for the first time. It’s close to the airport and is not too far from Manila’s historical core. Its streets are lined with awesome dining selections, from fancy restaurants to weekend markets. Its mall strips make it a great shopping destination, too. And best of all, a wide array of accommodations, from hostels to luxury hotels.
• Mall of Asia and Bay Area , along Manila Bay and near the airport.
• Bonifacio Global City , another business district in Taguig.

Most affordable non-BnB accommodations, however, are in Makati and Manila. Although there are a few exceptions, the Mall of Asia area and Bonifacio Global City are generally pricey.

If I were to pick a specific area, I would say Poblacion in Makati would be great for backpackers and budget travelers. A backpacking culture is also starting to flourish here, near the streets of Burgos/Jupiter/Kalayaan. Lots of lodging and dining options. And drinking options too. Haha. I always find myself in this area for the booze and food.

How to get to manila.

Manila has one busy airport — the Ninoy Aquino International Airport , more commonly called NAIA (Nah-eeh-yah). Almost every commercial airport in the Philippines is directly connected to NAIA, which is why even when your destination is the islands, you’re most probably still gonna find yourself in Manila.

NAIA has four commercial passenger terminals:

• NAIA Terminal 1 . Used by foreign carriers except All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, KLM, and Singapore Airlines. A few Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights also use this.
• NAIA Terminal 2 . Used exclusively by Philippine Airlines and PAL Express. (Note that some PAL/PAL Express flights operate in other terminals too.)
• NAIA Terminal 3 . Used by Cebu Pacific Air (most flights), AirAsia (international), All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air, Emirates, KLM, and Singapore Airlines. PAL Express flights operate here too. Some Cebu Pacific flights also use Terminal 4.
• NAIA Terminal 4 . aka Domestic Terminal. Air Asia (domestic), Skyjet, and a few Cebu Pacific flights use this terminal.

HOW TO GET FROM NAIA TO CITY CENTER

“City center” isn’t really the best phrase for this because the airport is also in the city center. Your points of interest, however, are most likely in Makati and Manila City.

To get out of the airport, you have plenty of options: taxis, buses, and Uber/Grab. You might also be approached by those offering private transfer services, but the rates are so infuriatingly high, I won’t even bother.

The past couple of years saw the launch of P2P buses. Genesis Transport operates the buses to Clark (via Resorts World and Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas) and UBE Express runs the rest. Here are the routes, fares, and operating hours.

There are four routes that are clearly illustrated on this map.

Operating Hours:

• NAIA Terminal 1 : 8am-11pm, 30 mins interval
• NAIA Terminal 2 : 5am-11pm, 30 mins interval
• NAIA Terminal 3 , available 24 hours, 30 mins interval

The fare is fixed at P150 ($3) .

If you’re headed to Clark, ride the Genesis P2P Bus. Fare: P350. More info about that here: Manila-Clark P2P Bus Schedule

NAIA has allowed Grab vehicles to pick up passengers within the airport vicinity. If you’re a group or your hotel/destination is not anywhere close to any P2P stop, this is a good option. This has been a reliable transportation option for many travelers and locals alike. Although there’s still price surge every now and then, these apps are generally safe and convenient.

Without the price surge/traffic (early morning or around noon), expect to pay between P130 and P150 if your destination is in Makati or Mandaluyong. But if there is surge, it should be around P250 , unless the traffic is on a standstill, which can push the price even higher.

There are three types of taxis operating around the airport:

• Airport Taxi . These are the yellow cabs that you’ll see immediately after exiting any of the terminals. Hard to miss. These are a bit pricier than the regular white cabs, but generally in better condition. Flag-down rate is P70, plus P4 every 300 meters. If your hotel is in Makati, the could would probably be P200-300 ($4-6). If you’re going much farther, say Quezon City, it will set you back around P450 ($9).
• Regular Taxi . The white ones. Flag-down rate: P40, plus P3.50 every 300m and every 2-minute waiting time. Many of the taxi units roaming Manila have seen better days, and drivers do not have a sterling reputation. Because of the traffic conditions, many cab drivers would try to ask for more pesos on top of the meter.
• Fixed Rate Taxi (Coupon Taxi) . I haven’t tried this because every time I consider this, I get enraged at the prices. Maybe there are situations wherein it makes sense but I don’t know yet, so let’s pretend this isn’t even an option.

HOW TO GET AROUND MANILA

Taking public transportation within Metro Manila is unpredictable, to say the least. For first-timers, commuting requires a great deal of planning.  You have plenty of options — MRT, LRT, cab, bus, jeepney — but none of them guarantee a hassle-free journey. Manila has so much to offer to tourists, but the problem is getting from one destination to another. The simple truth is, Manila’s transportation system is highly disorganized. Except for outbound buses, none of these options work around a fixed, reliable schedule.

Here’s the thing, if it’s your first time in Manila and you’re spending only a few days, taking public transportation might not be a good idea. It’s complicated and it might eat up much of your time and derail your plans. If you’re on tight schedule or you’re a group of two or more, the most comfortable and convenient options are commuter apps like Uber and Grab . Locals have relied on these two apps too.

PLACES TO VISIT IN MANILA

Here are some of the tourist spots around Metro Manila that are worth your time. Many of these can be explored on your own so I provided links to DIY guides. But if you want to join group tours instead, I also added links to Klook tours.

If you have a local friend who is very familiar with the history of these sites, the most cost-efficient way is to have them tag along and do the tour on your own. But if you don’t, joining tours is great too. Either way, I highly recommend that you have someone explaining to you the background and significance of each attraction so you won’t be just looking at buildings that mean nothing to you. Local insight could make all the difference.

If Manila had a soul, you’d find it hiding inside any ancient structure in Intramuros. The historic core of the capital, it was built in 1571, making it the oldest district in the city. It has survived waves of foreign invasions, a world war, and even booming, unrelenting threats of overdevelopment. But it continues to stand silently amidst the roaring metropolis outside its fortified walls.

You can explore Intramuros on your own, but if you want to appreciate it better, it’s best to join a guided tour. Klook has two Intramuros offers: a walking tour and a bamboo bicycle tour.

Binondo (Manila Chinatown)

Almost every major city in the world has a Chinatown. But the one in Binondo is worth a visit for two reasons. First, it is the first Chinatown in the world . It was established in 1594 by Governor Luis Perez Dasmarinas for Chinese settlers who were converted into Catholicism. Second, unlike many Chinatowns which became more of a tourist attraction, Binondo is as real as it gets . You’ll see Filipino-Chinese continue to live and work here, with all the joys, the sounds, and the dirt of a typical third-world district.

But one thing that most local tourists come here over and over again for is the food. Binondo is a giant food court. A walk along its streets isn’t complete without filling your face with authentic Filipino-Chinese dishes.

Ayala Museum

Metro Manila has numerous private museums, but Ayala Museum is my favorite because of its GOLD. Established in 1967, the museum has been cradling important cultural and historical artifacts that will change how you look at Philippine societies in the past. Aside from countless pieces of art, its most valuable collection is the “Gold of Ancestors” exhibit, with over a thousand gold artifacts on display, an undeniable proof of our forefathers’ highly sophisticated way of life that burgeoned and flourished in the 16th century, even before the Spanish era.

Poblacion, Makati

Makati’s Poblacion area has become the “place to be” for both tourists and locals over the past few years. It has rows of bars and restaurants that young locals frequent. It has also seen budget-friendly lodging options sprout along its streets, nurturing a backpacking culture.

In the daytime, you can explore Brgy. Poblacion and stop at the following:

• Sts. Peter and Paul Church
• La Casitas Mercedes, a heritage home
• Pasig River Park
• Salcedo Market (Saturday only)
• Legazpi Market (Sunday only)

Bonifacio Global City (BGC)

Home to many corporate offices and high-end restaurants and shops, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig is Manila’s premier business and shopping district. But it’s also hip and trendy. Put on your most comfortable footwear and find 17 of the attention-grabbing works of art like wall murals and installations.

How to Get There: From EDSA Ayala, ride a bus to BGC. You can also ride a jeep from EDSA-Guadalupe. BGC is also accessible from C5.

Malacañang Palace

Malacañang is the official residence of the President of the Philippines, but some parts of it are open to visitors. This guided walking tour will take you around this historic house of power and narrate the stories (and scandals) of those who lived in it. Then, you will be taken to the other parts of Brgy. San Miguel (where Malacanang is located) including San Rafael Street and Legarda Mansion, one of the first art deco houses in Manila, for a merienda.

Important! If you’re booking this tour, you need to reply to the confirmation email with a copy of your passport and other details.

The University of the Philippines-Diliman is not just an academic institution but a completely different world, sheltered from the deafening noise and the busy jolt of the rest of the city. Take a jog and see the many old buildings that incubate some of the best young minds, coming from different parts of the country.

Watch a student film at Cine Adarna. Step into the Vargas Museum. Check out Maginhawa Street, a food-lover’s paradise dotted with countless restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines — from streetfood (balut, isaw, and kwek-kwek) to home-cooked meals to gourmet treats.

National Museum Complex

The National Museum complex is composed of four separate buildings adorning Rizal Park:

• National Museum of Fine Arts
• National Museum of Natural History
• National Museum of Anthropology
• National Planetarium

The most celebrated piece inside the National Museum of Fine Arts is Juan Luna’s Spoliarium , a painting that depicts the bodies of gladiators being pulled away while onlookers watch. The artwork won a gold medal at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, Spain.

Mt. Pinatubo Hike

Ride a 4×4 jeep and trek to the crater of Mt. Pinatubo! It’s a long way but the view is definitely worth the time and effort. See the rim of the crater slope up from a lakeful of rainwater, accumulated over the years!

Corregidor Island

The historic island of Corregidor is just an hour ferry ride away from Manila. Strategically located at the mouth of Manila Bay, it is the biggest of the heavily fortified islands that make up the harbor defenses of the capital. It played a pivotal role during the Pacific War, with its fall signaling Japanese victory and the start of their occupation of the Philippines (1942-45).

Anilao Dive Sites (Batangas)

Anilao is the closest dive site to Manila and is regarded by many as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines. It has become an ideal destination for divers, especially to beginners. A research done in the surrounding waters in 2011 alone came back with the discovery of over 300 new species!

If you’re staying in a Z Hostel dorm, this itinerary will cost you the following:

You can still bring down the cost by taking a jeepney to get to the attractions instead of Uber . It will save you as much as P700 ! It’s quite the experience too.

The biggest chunk of the budget for this itinerary also goes to the Carlos Celdran Tour of Intramuros . If you’re traveling on a shoestring, you can skip the tour and walk around the site on your own. I’ve done both the guided tour and DIY, and the guided tour will make the experience exponentially better. It will make you understand not just Intramuros but Manila as a whole.

If you have more days, consider going on a day trip to a nearby province . If you’re a history buff or you want to learn more about the significance of Manila, pick a tour to the Corregidor Island. It’s technically not part of Manila, but it is the fortress island that protects it.

If you’re up for an adventure and you want to see the immense power of nature, choose the Mt. Pinatubo Trek.

Update: We are deeply saddened to update that Carlos Celdran passed away. He was a great guy who had overflowing love for Manila. He will be missed. This tour is no longer available.

OTHER TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

• Tipping is not mandatory in Manila . If dining at restaurants, check if your receipt has a service charge covered. Otherwise, leave around 10% of the bill at upscale restos if you enjoyed the service. In more budget places, I usually just leave P20-P100.
• Wear light, breathable clothes . Manila’s climate can be unforgiving especially in the summer when temperatures can reach up to 34C (93F). Make sure you’re clad in something made of light, breathable material as your day can easily get hot and sweaty. If you’re planning on entering churches, dress modestly especially during mass.
• Wear sunscreen . Because the sun. :P
• Avoid rush hours . If your route uses a major thoroughfare like EDSA, commuting during rush hours is not a good idea. These hours are from 7am-10am and 5pm-9pm, when students and workers go to work and school and come home. No, not even the MRT can save you from this. All train cars are so packed this time. As a rule of thumb, either be an early bird or go out at around noon. Lunch time is usually a great time to take public transportation. The sun may be a little too much, but there really isn’t much traffic within this period.
• If rain pours heavily, don’t go out. Manila is soaked in floodwater at least once a year, and it’s frustrating how this is still not addressed appropriately up to now. But all rants aside, citizens have learned to live with it. (Sucks, I know! Ugh, ranting again.) Here’s the bottomline, if it’s been raining heavily all day, chances are that the traffic has built up. Ergo, not a great time to hit the road. Of course, there are exceptions. But to be on the safe (and dry) side, wait it out.
• Learn the art of killing time . If the rush hour or the heavy rain catch you on the road, wait it out. There’s a lot to do in Manila, anyway. Go malling, watch a movie, or kill time at a cafe until the main roads stop behaving like a massive parking lot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is manila safe for tourists.

YES , Manila is generally safe. Like most cities, there are shady places that you should avoid, but these are not touristy areas. Petty, non-violent crimes like pickpocketing and snatching can happen in some districts if you’re not careful, so make sure you keep an eye on your belongings and avoid bringing out your valuables (especially mobile phones) unless necessary.

Poverty is real and obvious in Manila. Don’t be surprised if you get approached by street children or beggars. They’re not dangerous, but they can be persistent.

Your bigger concern is the heat. Manila can get really hot and humid especially in summer months. Speaking of summer months…

When is the best time to visit Manila?

December to May, the driest months . The last thing you want to happen during your stay in Manila is a heavy downpour, so this period is ideal. December to February is the most comfortable because the temperature isn’t that high, and you get to see how locals celebrate the holidays. March to May is widely considered as the Philippine summer, and the weather can be hot and humid.

As a predominantly Catholic nation, Filipinos take their Christmas traditions seriously. The Christmas season in the Philippines begins on September 1 and ends at the Epiphany, the Feast of The Three Kings, on January 6. The Lent is also widely observed. Know that the week before Christmas and Easter can get you stranded in traffic for hours because it’s when residents leave the city to visit family in the provinces. But on the actual holidays, the city is virtually empty, and many establishments close early if they even open at all.

June to November is the wet season. Generally, the showers are mild and tolerable, so you might still give it a shot. But every now and then, a typhoon hits, which can cause flooding and worsen the traffic situation.

Where to get pesos or exchange money in Manila?

Countless ATMs everywhere; you can simply withdraw cash instead of exchanging currencies.

If you must exchange currencies, the most reputable money changers are Sanry’s and Czarina . You can also exchange at any major bank, but you will need to present documents (passport, etc.).

What is the electrical plug used in Manila?

Socket Type A. 220V, 60Hz.

Plugs have two flat pins. Type B is sometimes used but not that common.

Planning is an important first step for travel and the same is true for creating brochures. Here’s a look at what every good brochure needs.

1. Research the Destination

It’s important to do your homework before you travel. There are many ways to do this, and what you choose will depend on how close you are to the destination and what you may already know about it.

If you’re close enough to the destination to visit yourself, take the time to travel there. This will give you firsthand experience and insight that can add a unique perspective to your brochure design.

When traveling to the destination doesn’t make sense, start your research online instead. You can use official government websites, tourism blogs, or even social media to get a sense of what’s special about the location.

Ask Family and Friends

You can also get tips from people who live in or have traveled to the destination. Understanding what the must-see or must-do attractions are will give you the right information to include on brochure panels.

2. Get Images

Next, you’ll need images for your design. There are two options you can choose from to get the best possible results.

Pick Up Your Camera

If you’re able to visit the destination yourself, brush up on photography tips before you go, so you can take your own pictures .

This way, your brochure will be differentiated from any others and grab people’s attention.

Purchase Stock Images

Don’t have access to images of your own? Buy images from a stock image site to use in your project. Just make sure you understand the license terms and limitations before you decide to use an image.

3. Select a Template

At this point, you’ll have everything you need to start putting your brochure together. Choosing a brochure template is the best way to ensure you can create a visually appealing asset, even if you don’t have any design experience.

Look for something that’s easy to add your information to and edit with an online design . In just a few clicks with an online editor , you can put a brochure together that you can print and share to show what you learned.
