Your Elaphiti Islands Boat Trip Itinerary

First stop: lokrum island and fisherman’s cave.

Lokrum Island in Croatia is a truly enchanting destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. With its rich history, lush botanical gardens, stunning natural beauty, and breathtaking views, it is a perfect blend of culture, history, and nature that promises to create an unforgettable experience. This wonderful island is the first we encounter on our Elaphiti Islands full-day boat tour.

Fisherman’s Cave is situated in the eastern part of Lokrum Island. It will be the first stop on our visit. The cave is shallow, but the rocks surrounding it are over 20 meters high. We will enter this unique cave by boat. The most exciting part about this cave is that you can see layers of the earth being formed – an extraordinary sight.

After exploring the cave, you can enjoy thrilling cliff jumping at the cave entrance, where the water is deep enough!

Second stop: Koločep

The second stop on this Elaphiti Islands tour takes us to the island of Koločep.

This charming and enchanting destination promises to leave a lasting impression on all who visit. With its crystal-clear waters, pristine sandy beaches, and traditional architecture, it offers a tranquil escape from the fast-paced world and a chance to soak up the relaxed atmosphere of the Adriatic coast.

Whether you’re looking to lounge on the beach, snorkel in the turquoise waters, or explore the island’s unique history and culture, our tour of Koločep promises to be a truly memorable experience.

Your own Blue Cave Tour from Dubrovnik

On this Dubrovnik snorkeling tour, we will visit one of Koločep’s landmarks; the famous ‘Blue Cave’. This breathtaking cave can only be accessed by swimming — we offer complimentary snorkeling equipment disinfected before and after every tour.

After time spent in the wondrous Blue Cave, we will visit the beautiful caves known as the Three Sisters or the Three Green Caves.

Here you can dive under the rocks, discover a hidden room in between, and take underwater pictures with a GoPro. Fun and adventure are guaranteed!

Next Stop: Lopud Island

The Island of Authentic Summer Feel

Our next destination is Lopud, an island famous for having one of the best sandy beaches in the Dubrovnik area, called Šunj. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to fully experience a hot, idle summer day on the Adriatic Sea. You can choose to stay on the speedboat and get a tan, enjoy complimentary drinks like a variety of local wines, beers, and sodas, or go ashore and explore the island at your leisure.

During our Elaphiti Islands tour, you can freely explore the island. We can also enjoy a fun visit to the village to see even more! You can visit the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, Đorđić-Mayneri Park, remarkable small churches, and much more. Or, enjoy more time in the water, snorkeling, and swimming!

If you wish, we can also arrange a light lunch at one of the restaurants on the islands.

The island’s motto is “No cars, and no rush” – something you’ll understand after stepping on this idyllic island!

Final Stop for our Elaphiti Islands Boat Trip: Šipan

The Island of Fertile Fields

The last island we’ll visit on our private Elaphiti Islands tour is Šipan, the largest and most densely populated of the Elaphites. With its untouched nature, turquoise blue sea, green olive and pine trees, and birds chirping…it is truly a place of serenity.

In a small seaside location called Suđurađ, two Renaissance palaces are owned by the famous ship-owning Skočibuha family. Locals are dedicated to producing homemade and home-grown goods, including wine, olive oil, marmalade, fruits, vegetables, and more. If you wish, we can organize wine and olive oil tasting. Just add it as an add-on on the last part of the booking flow

The Perfect Dubrovnik Snorkeling Trip… On our way back, we will make a short stop to swim and snorkel around the pebble beaches of the small islet called Sikirica.

By the end of our day together, we hope you’ll make countless beautiful memories and have plenty of stories to take home with you! We want you to rewind and replay these moments for years to come…always fondly remember your experience with us in Dubrovnik.

Elaphite Islands

About elaphite islands.

A group of 13 islands is located in the south of Croatia, northwest of Dubrovnik , surrounded by the island of Mljet , the Peljesac peninsula and the Mljet and Kolocep channel. The name of the archipelago is believed to come from Greek , specifically the word „elaphos“, „elaphitides“, which would mean deer-rich land. Deer traces were, however, not found on any of the islands.

you can read more about elaphiti islands on wikipedia

Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan

Are the only inhabited islands with around 900 inhabitants throughout the year . The Elaphite Islands have long been a favorite place of rest, enjoyment and business for the Dubrovnik nobility . Both then and today, locals and tourists alike love to visit the Elaphite Islands and their cultural sites , nature , sandy beaches , bays , caves and taste the seafood .

Private boat tour

Private boat tour is the best way to visit the Elaphite Islands. This is the only way to find hidden places, see and experience the islands in full splendor!

If you decide to take a trip with us, Deck & Cheers will brighten your day. You will be picked up from your address in and around Dubrovnik and in a few minutes, your private boat tour begins. You will pass the island of Daksa or the walls of the old city of Dubrovnik (depending on the place of departure), then we speed up a bit and in a few minutes you arrive at the first and smallest inhabited island of Kolocep, among the locals „Kalamota“. Kolocep is the richest island in terms of caves, and their exploration is a wonderful and special experience. Especially the swimming in the Blue Cave, which is also a major attraction.

After enjoying the caves, you will taste our D&C welcome cocktail prepared by captain Tonći. Next stop - a walk through the place called Donje Čelo is special particularly because of the peace and tranquility: there are no cars on Kolocep. From the island of Kolocep we move to the island of Lopud. Lopud is the middle one of the inhabited islands and it also has the largest village, but also peace and quiet, as there are also no cars, only a few carts for transporting food and goods, and golf cars used for the transport of passengers to the sandy beach of Sunj or the Lafodia Hotel.

Thank you for choosing us!

Everything you need to know about doing an Elaphiti Islands tour from Dubrovnik

Some of the imagery that springs to mind when thinking about Croatia, has to be crystal clear water, and gorgeous beaches. For this reason when we were planning our trip to Dubrovnik we really wanted to make sure we had enough time to also do an Elaphiti Islands tour. Located northwest of Dubrovnik the Elaphiti or Elafiti islands are an archipelago made up of a number of islands in the Adriatic Sea.

They provide a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Old Town Dubrovnik, and give you a taste of life by the sea. They are also a perfect place to go to relax and enjoy life at a slower pace. Here is everything you need to know about planning your own Elaphiti Islands day trip.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

How to get to the Elaphiti Islands

How long do you need to explore the elaphiti islands, choosing the best elaphiti islands tour, best time to book your elaphiti islands tour, what to expect on your elaphiti islands tour, elaphiti islands tour – visiting koločep, elaphiti islands tour – visiting šipan, elaphiti islands tour – visiting lopud, what to bring when visiting the elaphiti islands, reasons you should plan your elaphiti islands day trip, beautiful buildings in an old world setting, elaphiti islands day trip – is it worth it.

So the first thing to know when planning your Elaphiti Islands day trip is how to get there. The 3 main Islands that you will want to explore are Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. You can get the ferry which operates 4 times a day, except on Sunday when the service reduces to twice a day. Although depending on which time of year you are travelling this schedule may change so be sure to check their website for up to date timetable details before you set off.

The other alternative is to book an Elaphiti Islands tour though a private operator. This is probably your best option unless you are planning to stay overnight on one of the islands.

The amount of time you need to explore the Elaphiti Islands will of course depend on what it is you want to do on the islands. If you have the time, and you just want a relaxed break away from the rest of the world then you may want to consider staying the night.

If you are short on time, the good news about visiting the Elaphiti Islands is that you can do it all in a day. The islands are relatively small so you probably only need an hour or so on each one, although you may want a bit longer on Lopud.

If you decide to go down the Elaphiti Islands tour route, then you will probably be faced with the dilemma of which tour to choose from. Tours range from private tours, to boats with larger groups of around 60 people or so. It all depends on what you want. Some tours also include extras like speed boat rides and snorkelling. We chose one of the basic tours, which was perfect because you get taken to the Elaphiti islands and get free time on each of them so the boat ride there is only part of your journey.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Here are some of the best Elaphiti Islands tours that you can book just to give you a taste of the kinds of experiences that are out there.

This tour is very similar to the one we did. You get taken to each of the islands, and have free time to explore yourself. You also get lunch and drinks on the boat. This is another tour that was very similar to the one we booked.

If you want to travel via a more unusual vessel then this Elaphiti Islands tour might be for you.

If you are wondering when the best time to book your Elaphiti Islands tour then it is important to note that these tours do not operate all year round. They usually start in April, and the tours are very much weather dependant. If the weather isn’t great chances are your tour will be cancelled and you will be encouraged to book on the next day instead. Make sure that you book well in advance and be prepared for changes to your itinerary.

Elaphiti Islands day trip tips

Here are some things we think you should know before planning your Elaphiti Islands day trip

  • The trip usually lasts a full day so if you are in a rush this might not be the tour for you
  • Bring sun cream because it does get pretty hot on the islands with limited shade
  • If you are planning to swim make sure you bring your swimming gear and a towel
  • Bring some cash with you, especially for some wine tasting on Šipan Island.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

All in all we spent about 8 hours on our Elaphiti Islands tour. We were picked up from our hotel at about 9.20am and driven to the tours departure point. Not long after we set sail for the islands. The itinerary was roughly as below:

Kolocep Island – 45 minutes to explore

Sipan Island – Just over an hour to explore

1pm – Lunch is provided on the boat

Lopud Island – 3 hours to explore

I should also note that drinks are provided throughout the tour which included Grappa, Croatian wines, and soft drinks. At the end of the tour once you arrive back in Dubrovnik, there are buses waiting to take you back to your hotel.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

As mentioned Koločep is the first island that we visited as part of our Elaphiti Islands tour. Here we had about 45 minutes allocated, which I know doesn’t sound like much time but it is a very small island. There are basic facilities on the island like a cafe, and public toilets. We ended up going on a walk exploring the island before returning to the boat for our next stop.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Out of the 3 islands we visited on our Elaphiti Islands day trip, Šipan was our favourite. It also happens to be the largest of the islands. We had just over an hour to explore and so we took the opportunity to get lost down some of the back streets. Whilst doing this we spotted a sign directing us to some wine tasting.

Never ones to miss an opportunity to taste some local wine we eventually stumbled into someone’s backyard where people were gathered around sipping red wine. The cool thing is this wine is made in a cellar of a former sailor. For the equivalent of about a Euro you can have a taste or under 10 Euro’s you can buy a bottle. The wine was really nice, and we bought a bottle to take home with us. It was a completely random but also a very memorable experience.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

After a hearty Mediterranean style lunch on the boat we were whisked off to the final island on our Elaphiti Islands day trip, Lopud. We had around 3 hours to spend here, which was really beautiful. We started by exploring the Franciscan Monastery that overlooks the village. We then made our way to the Botanical Gardens for a relaxing walk. The walk was very atmospheric, but also a great reprieve from the scorching sun.

There are a couple of beaches on the island, including one that is sandy compared to the usual rocky beaches you find on the islands. It was a bit cold for us to swim but we did spend a bit of time just relaxing by the water and listening to the waves. There are also a number of restaurants and bars on the island with outdoor seating which are perfect for sipping wine and admiring the views.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Here are some of the things that we think you should pack when visiting the Elaphiti Islands.

  • Suncream, hat & sunglasses
  • Swimming costume & towel

If you are still on the fence about whether or not you should visit the Elaphiti Islands here are some reasons you should go.

One of our favourite things about visiting the Elaphiti Islands was the fact that there were so many quirky wine shops, selling local wines. But even cooler was the random wine maker who turned his cellar into a winery. The wine was really good I have to add, and it was all part of the Elaphiti Islands experience.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Food on the Elaphiti Islands is honestly out of this world. Seafood, unsurprisingly is very popular with many restaurants serving fresh and authentic seafood dishes.

Another really cool thing about the Elaphiti Islands is the architecture. You’ve got these gorgeous colourful, crumbling buildings, against a backdrop of crystal clear water. There are also a number of incredible churches and neighbourhoods to explore. Just walk around and enjoy!

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

I’m a bit of a crazy cat lady, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Obviously one of my highlights when visiting the Elaphiti Islands was the number of cats living on the island. Just make sure you give them space and let them come to you.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Honestly you cannot beat the crystal clear waters of the Elaphiti Islands. And whilst the islands can be busy especially during peak tourist season, there are so many hidden spots you can find, where you can sit and enjoy the views.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

So you might be wondering if an Elaphiti Islands day trip is worth it? Yes, it does take away a full day from your time in Dubrovnik, but the islands are incredible. If you are into crystal clear water, and chilled island vibes then you absolutely have to visit. The islands are beautiful and add something special to any holiday in Croatia.

If you are trying to decide if Dubrovnik is worth visiting here is a guide for you.

Elaphite Islands Tour can be also named Three Island cruise as you take a boat ride which takes you to the three largest islands in the Elaphite archipelago: Koločep, Šipan and Lopud. This is a full day tour and lasts for eight hours.

These islands are the nature's finest and ruins of former patrician summer residences are scattered along the wooded slopes of these islands.

We make a short stop on the island of Koločep before we continue our trip to Lopud where we will visit the Franciasian monastery and the church of St. Mary from the 15th-century.

After short sightseeing tour of Lopud, we will continue our trip to Sudurac port on the island of Šipan where we will also make a short sightseeing round and have ourselves a lunch. The lunch will include grilled fish and Dlamatian wine while a local group entertains you with typical Dalmatian music.

After lunch we will return to Lopud for swimming and leisure time. Lopud will offer you plenty of time for swimming and relaxing on its lovely sandy beaches, especially impressive is the famous Šunj beach. After leisure time we will return home.

A day trip to the islands in this archipelago northwest of Dubrovnik makes a perfect escape from the summer crowds. Out of 14 islands only the three largest – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan – are permanently inhabited. You can see all three in one day on a ‘Three Islands & Picnic’ tour, which is offered by various operators that have desks at Dubrovnik's Old Harbour (expect to pay between 250KN and 300KN, including drinks and lunch).

Elaphite Islands – Sunny Islands near Dubrovnik

These precious islands are a natural wonder – but they are also so much more. This Dubrovnik islands tour will provide you with a real experience of island life, Dalmatian style, of course. This group of thirteen islands is located to the north-west of Dubrovnik, and several of them are inhabited. Dubrovnik island hopping will simply blow your mind! This boat tour will show you the three most beautiful islands – Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. You can go for a swim in a crystal clear sea, wander around in the shade of Mediterranean vegetation, explore interesting small villages or simply take a journey through the local cuisine, it’s up to you! This is a perfect place to get away from busy towns and the hustle and bustle of life since there are no vehicles at all on two of them, and only a few on the third. The highlight of the tour is the largest of the islands – Sipan. Artefacts discovered here show that this island was already inhabited in the time of the Romans. There are many examples of its rich historical heritage, such as ancient villas and old churches on the island – but since this is one of the best Dubrovnik boat tours we will make sure we show you some wonderful, secret places rich with natural beauty.

A Guide to Cavtat: Dubrovnik’s Quiet Coastal Escape

  • Last Updated March 17, 2024
  • Europe , Croatia

There is a sense of tranquillity in Cavtat. It is a quiet coastal fishing town that hugs the coastline of the horse-shoe-shaped Tija bay, hemmed in by pine-covered mountains that drop suddenly to meet the glistening Adriatic. Here, terracotta-roofed houses with traditional green shutters are tightly packed on the seafront promenade in the shae of swaying palms.

Like so many villages and towns in this part of Dalmatia, Cavtat (pronounced sav-tat) was founded as a Greek colony in the 4th century BC. At the time it was known as Epidaurum, which was later changed to Epidaurus when the village came under Roman control in 228 BC. When the Slavs invaded the area in the seventh century, refugees from the town established Dubrovnik. As Dubrovnik grew in prosperity, it soon surpassed Cavtat, which was reabsorbed into the thriving city in 1426.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Nowadays, Cavtat’s disconnect from Dubrovnik is its main selling point. The town acts as a quiet escape from a city swarming with tourists, drawn by its connection to the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Here, rather than competing with guided tours jostling for a look at filming locations, you will find fishing boats calmly bobbing by the shore, artisan shops and peaceful coves. The sandstone-coloured streets are dripping in purple bougainvillaea and are made to be wandered. Away from the main promenade, the condensed old town is a maze of cobbled alleyways and steep, stepped streets that occupy a peninsula hemmed in by harbours on either side.

That isn’t to say that Cavtat is devoid of the cultural and historical points of interest of its nearest neighbour – It just has less. The town is dominated by the beautiful baroque Church of Saint Nicholas which, along with Our Lady of the Snow Monastery that sits at the northern end of town, host a wonderful array of artefacts and renaissance artwork, as well as pieces by famed Croatian artist and Cavtat native, Vlaho Bukovac.

How to Get to Cavtat

Cavtat is Croatia’s most southern resort, located about 20 kilometres south of Dubrovnik and only 22 kilometres from the Montenegrin border. This makes it a great place to stay if you want to see all the sights and culture of Dubrovnik but don’t want to deal with the crowds. Travelling by bus or boat between Cavtat and Dubrovnik is relatively simple.

At just 6 km away, Cavtat is actually closer to Dubrovnik airport than Dubrovnik’s old town itself. Unfortunately, there are no direct bus routes between the airport and Cavtat so you may need to take the airport shuttle to Dubrovnik (55 Kuna) and transfer to a Cavtat-bound bus. The airport shuttle leaves 30 minutes after the arrival of each flight. If you opt for a taxi, the journey takes around 10 minutes and usually costs no more than €15.

To get to Cavtat from Dubrovnik, take the number 10 bus from the Dubrovnik Bus Terminal. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and buses depart every 45 to 60 minutes. Expect to pay around 25kn each way. Alternatively, a taxi will cost around 230 kn to 280 kn.

VISITING DUBROVNIK'S OLD TOWN FROM CAVTAT

From April to November, there are regular water taxi services from Cavtat harbour to the old port of Dubrovnik. While this may not be the quickest route, it is certainly a scenic way to start of a day of sightseeing as the coastline between the two towns is speckled with beautiful islands and picturesque towns. Departures for the hour-long trip are every hour and cost 60 Kuna one way and 100 for a return trip. If you board somewhere along the line in Plat, Mlini, Srebreno it will be a bit cheaper. Children under 5 travel free while those between the ages of 5 and 12 get a half-price ticket.

Getting Around Cavtat

With the main promenade wrapping its way around a horse-shoe harbour, Cavtat’s centre is compact and much easier to navigate than the narrow, labyrinthine streets of Dubrovnik’s old town. The entire town can be explored from one end to the other on foot in less than 20-minutes. Those looking to wander a little further can keep on walking beyond the end of the promenade, following the trail that wraps around the Rat Peninsula. It’s an easy-going walk that can be completed in around 30 minutes.

It is a steep climb up the hillside to some of the town’s larger hotels, but most will offer a shuttle service to the harbourside.

Where to Stay in Cavtat

Due to its proximity to Dubrovnik, Cavtat is a popular base for holidaymakers, meaning there is no shortage of accommodation options. There are three large hotels that sit on the outskirts of the town centre, while beside the harbour, there is an abundance of boutique bed and breakfasts as well as rental options.

5 STAR LUXURY

Hotel croatia.

Sitting on its own peninsular high above the blue waters of Cavtat Harbour, the sprawling, modernist complex that makes up 5-star Hotel Croatia is one of the Dubrovnik Riviera’s most luxurious accommodation options. The hotel was designed by architect Slobodan Miličević in 1973 and is surrounded by lush woodland and trails, with two of its own private beaches, spa facilities, and superb dining options.

Hotel Villa Pattiera

Set back from the bustle of the main promenade and overlooking a pretty square, Villa Pattiera occupies a 19th-century villa that has been transformed into a quaint 12-room boutique hotel. While this building is the birthplace of Croatian opera singer Tino Pattier, it is more well-known for the ground floor restaurant, Dalmacija, that was opened by the Mandić family in 1979 before they renovated the rest of the villa in the hope of accommodating holiday makers. While the hotel may not have a pool like some of the town’s larger hotels, the first and second floors both have secluded stone terraces where you are able to relax with a drink.

Hotel Cavtat

Hotel Cavtat is a modern, seaside hotel just 5 minutes’ walk from the old town. Overlooking the sheltered Tiha Bay, this 130-room hotel offers a rooftop pool and waterfront terrace as well as both a buffet and a la carte restaurants.

Things to do in Cavtat

House of vlaho bukovac.

Cavtat’s most famous son, painter Vlaho Bukovac, spent the first eleven years of his life in this house in the town before leaving with his uncle for New York. On returning to Croatia at the age of fifteen, he decided to focus on art as a career, training in Paris before coming home to Croatia in 1893 and establishing himself at the centre of a new Croatian art scene. Here he set up shop in his former childhood home, which he turned into a painting studio. His daughters converted the home into a public museum following his passing in 1922 and In 2004, it reopened as a part of Konavale’s Museums & Galleries.

Racic Family Mausoleum

Sitting at the end of a small peninsula, the imposing mausoleum of the Račić family was designed in bronze and white stone by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrovic and can be seen looming high above the town from anywhere along Cavtat’s waterfront.

Ivo Račić – who earned his fortune in ship building – followed by his two children, died a sudden death in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu. At the request of Marija, Račić’s widow, Meštrović constructed a votive cemetery chapel consecrated to Our Lady of Angels. You will find it in the Saint Rocco Cemetery, on the highest point of the Rat Peninsula. While the climb is a little strenuous, the cemetery is quite moving and the view out across the bay towards the centre of Cavtat is worth the aching legs.

elaphiti islands tour from cavtat

Our Lady of the Snow Monastery

Sitting at the northernmost end of Cavtat harbour, this monastery was recently converted into a bed and breakfast but the adjoining church is still open to visitors. The medieval altarpieces and 16th-century triptych by artist Vicko Lovrin are worth a look, as is a piece by Bukovac depicting the Madonna and child. Each August 5th, Cavtat hosts the festival of Our Lady of the Snows in which the church plays an important role.

The Baltazar Bogišić Collection

19th-century jurist and sociologist Baltazar Bogišić was born in Cavtat on December 7 1834, and led a rather storied life: not only was he a polymath and legal historian of international renown, but he was also a founding member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (today Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts).

Throughout his career, he amassed a library of 15,000 books and brochures, 200 journals, 66 incunabula, 164 manuscripts and 165 geographical maps that were left in the care of his sister, Marija Bogišić-Pohl following Bogišić’s death in 1908. Later, in 1955, the collection became part of the Institute for Historical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Dubrovnik.

Today, Bogišić’s library is housed in the ancient Rector’s Palace in Cavtat, together with an archaeological collection. Here you will also find a wonderful gallery of works by Vlaho Bukovac, a contemporary of Bogii.

Tours & Day Trips from Cavtat

Although there are not many sights and activities based around Cavtat, one advantage of the town’s proximity to Dubrovnik is that the majority of tour agencies operating out of the old town will organise pick-ups from Cavtat. Although this is a given for tours that pass through Cavtat on their way to Montenegro or Konavle, it also applies to boat tours leaving from Dubrovnik itself. However, reaching Dubrovnik to begin a tour is relatively easy via public transport.

Take an ATV Safari of Konavle

An adrenaline-fueled ATV tour of the countryside around Cavtat is the perfect way to see more of the Konavle region. Kojan Koral offers a heart-stopping two-hour tour that takes you on an exhilarating ride through the Ljuta River, passing through the wetlands and the vineyard-filled plains of the Konavle field before entering the picturesque village Čilipi through the Konavle rocks geomorphological and hydrographic reserve where you can stop for stunning views of the turquoise Adriatic Sea. Tours cost 700 HRK per person or 600 HRK per person sharing one quad. Helmets, goggles, and overalls are provided but I recommend wearing shoes that can withstand mud and water.

Visit the Elaphiti Islands

The picturesque Elafiti Islands, also known as the Elaphite Islands, are located just off the coast of Dubrovnik. There are a total of six major islands and a large number of little islets make up the archipelago known as Elaphite. Koloep, Lopud, and Ipan are all inhabited, albeit with fewer than 1,000 residents in total. Two of them, Koloep and Lopud, are car-free. Island-hopping tours to the Elaphiti Islands from Dubrovnik usually include visits to the 3 main islands.

Spend the Day in Ston and Mali Ston

Two quaint coastal towns linked by an imposing defensive wall, the underrated gems of Ston and Mali Ston are known for three things; Fortresses, salt, and being home to some of the best oysters in the World. The main draw in Ston & Mali Ston are the 7km of fortifications that stretch the hillside between the two towns. From the highest point, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of across the 58 shimmering salt pools and out across the peninsular to the Adriatic on one side and Mali Ston Bay on the other.

Nowadays the walls are a little redundant. Ston and Mali Ston are sleepy fishing villages known for their quaint streets and world-renowned seafood, particularly Mali Ston’s oyster beds which can be visited via a boat trip that includes wine and oyster tasting. Tours to Ston and Mali Ston can be found here.

Explore Mljet National Park

Mljet is one of the greenest islands in all of Croatia, with a third of the forested land taken up by the stunning Mljet national park, home to two beautiful lakes that are perfect for those ooking to swim and kayak. The larger of the two lakes is home to St Mary’s Island and the stunning Crkva Sveta Marije, a beautiful 12th-century Benedictine monastery and adjoining church that has been transformed into a restaurant.

Ferries leave Dubrovnik for Mljet each morning and return in the early evening, although times vary throughout the year. Full-day tours, including entry to the national park and catamaran ticket, are available .

Where to Eat & Drink in Cavtat

Despite its small size, Cavtat has a surprisingly vibrant restaurant scene crammed with cafes, wine bars, and Mediterranean restaurants dishing up exquisite Croatian cuisine. Its bustling port means that seafood figures highly on menus around town but the numerous vineyards surrounding Cavtat mean that the wine lists won’t disappoint.

Overlooking the harbour on Tiha bay, Ludo More – meaning ‘Crazy Sea’ in Croatian – is a family-run restaurant with a menu that is dominated by Adriatic seafood prepared according to traditional recipes, just with a slightly modern twist. The fish is all supplemented by vegetables and herbs grown in Ludo More’s own garden. Although the dishes are simple, the focus is on fresh ingredients and the 3-course lunch menu was one of the culinary highlights of my time on the Dubrovnik Riviera.

Where : Put Tihe 22 When : Daily 9am – 12am

Starters at Ludo More restaurant in Cavtat

Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant

Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant isn’t in Cavtat but rather 20km east in Konavle, a region of steep hills and deep valleys that lines Croatia’s border with Montenegro. However, it is worth the taxi ride to get there. This restaurant sits amidst lush countryside next to the Ljuta River on the grounds of an ancient mill, complete with a functioning waterwheel. Konavoski Dvori focuses on classic Croatian dishes such as lamb or octopus ispod peke , slow-cooked in hot embers under a bell-shaped lid, or peka . All of this is served in a wonderfully romantic setting by wait staff in traditional outfits.

Where : Ljuta b.b, 20217, Ljuta When : Daily 11am – 11pm

Beach Bar Banac

A simple beach bar and cocktail spot nestled beside the water below Hotel Croatia. This is probably the best spot in town for sundowners or a nightcap before heading back to your hotel for the evening.

Where : Cavtat Seaside Promenade When : Daily 9am – 12pm

Opened by the Bobić family in 1971, Leut is one of Cavtat’s longest-running restaurants and a favourite amongst politicians and celebrities. It is mostly known for its seafood, all of which is sourced from local fishing vessels and displayed on the Cavtat promenade to catch the eye of hungry tourists. While the cosy, Dalmatian-style restaurant is fairly compact, it spills out onto a wonderfully romantic terrace with views of the entire bay.

Where : Trumbićev put 17 When : Daily 11am – 12pm

On the road that leads from Cavtat’s main square towards the Rat peninsula, you’ll find Peco, the town’s best bakery and the perfect place to sit with a pastry and coffee each morning. Vegan-friendly coffee spots can be a little difficult to find outside of Dubrovnik but Peco offers up both oat and almond milk coffees. Stop by at lunchtime for a selection of savoury pastries, homemade desserts, sandwiches and pizza slices.

Where : Kneza Domagoja When : Daily 7am – 12am

Beaches Near Cavtat

There are a number of beaches around Cavtat and the water in the bay is clean, tranquil, and a beautiful shade of turquoise. However, be warned that these beaches are not sandy, rather they are mostly either covered in small pebbles or require you to sunbathe on the rocky outcrops that are dotted around the town. If you don’t fancy laying your towel on the rocks or beside the promenade, there are a number of Beach clubs and bars that provide sunbeds and comfy chairs so that you can relax between dips and enjoy a steady supply of cocktails.

On the northern end of the Rat peninsula, you will find Kljucice Beach, while around Tija Bay you will find Zal Beach, Obod Beach, as well as a public beach in front of Hotel Croatia. Sustjepan Beach is the most popular swimming spot and can be found on peninsula of the same name with fantastic views of the port.

When is the Best Time to Visit Cavtat?

There is no getting around the fact that the old town of Dubrovnik is the most popular tourist destination in Europe and simply due to its close proximity to the historical walled town, Cavtat is also filled with holidaymakers year-round.

If you’re planning to visit during the summer months when the weather is at its best – typically June, July and August – you will have to expect higher-priced accommodation and limited availability. Thankfully, the shoulder season on the Dubrovnik Riviera can still provide a bit of sun, with the temperatures remaining reasonably high until late October.

From April to late may or mid-September to late October, you will find fewer tourists, cheaper hotel rates and all bars, restaurants, and services are still operating.

As with many other coastal towns, Cavtat hosts a summer festival between June and September and there is also a Summer Carnival that takes place at the beginning of June each year.
