Escapade Island Day Tour with Gateaway Tours, Noumea

Me and my wife had the pleasure of meeting Alfred and his wife Genevieve who run a very good and professional private tour company in Noumea called Gateaway Tours. We arrived by cruise ship from Australia (The Carnival Legend) on November 1st 2015 in Noumea. We arranged our tour by email from Australia several weeks before and paid on the day, the tour was 10000 CPF-Central Pacific Francs which we arranged the cash currency in Australia but they also take AUD as well, at the exchange rate at the time of around 78 Francs per AUD, that amounted to around $128 AUD per head which was for the Escapade Island Day tour. The nearest equivelant day shore tour Carnival was offering was Amedee Island day tour and they wanted $189 AUD per head so there was a considerable saving going with Alfred. On the subject of what is offered on the Escapade Island Tour you get: 1. A 2 hour coach tour with plenty of photo stops of Noumea city sights expertly narrated by Alfred who is a very funny, friendly man in a luxury air conditioned bus. 2. A stop at the Noumea Marina market for a coffee and look 3. The return ferry ride out to Escapade Island resort which is about 30 minutes each way. 4. Superb buffet lunch ( eat as much as you want ) which is mouth watering with fresh giant prawns, meats and salads and a dessert buffet filled with traditional French pastries and sweets to die for 5. Use of the resort facilities such as the pools, bars and the beach. We were transfered from the Noumea container wharf to the main ferry and cruise terminal by free shuttle buses provided by Carnival ( Carnival Legend and the other mega liners are too big too dock at the main Cruise Terminal, only the P& O "baby ships" dock there). We were met at the bus stop by Alfred who had a board sign with our names and other passengers joining the tour so there was no getting lost, very efficient Alfred! We introduced ourselves and were welcomed by Alfred who gave us easy instructions and we had time to wander around the Cruise Terminal which has an excellent souvenir market on the second floor, which Alfred informed us about and we bought some souvenirs. The actual tour started at 9.30 am and finished about 4 pm, allow 7 hours for this tour, on a cruise ship, the ship must be docked the whole day at Noumea, in our experience of 6 cruises, most cruise ships dock at around 8 a.m at Noumea and leave around 4.30 pm to 5 pm. We then boarded our air conditioned coach for a 2 hour city tour of Noumea hosted by Alfred ( who is a Vanuatu native living in Noumea, his wife Genevieve or Genie comes from Indonesia ) who was very informative and funny, plenty of stops for photos. We then went to the main Noumea Marina, where on weekends a large regular weekly market runs with fresh food, souvenirs etc. ( we happened to be in Noumea on a Sunday when this market runs and not much else is open ) Had a chance to explore the market and have a coffee and then boarded the nearby ferry dock for our trip out to Escapade Island Resort. Escapade Island is the local play ground and getaway for the Noumea locals, it is expensive for them to go there and is one of life's luxuries, they can't afford to do it often, lots of water sports run out there or just for a lounge around and escape, hence its name. The resort is truly beautiful and 5 star. The buffet was unbelievable, one of the best food buffets we have ever encountered in our lives, my mouth still waters thinking about it. The resort facilities are first class, the pools, poolside bars and walkways out over the pristine shallow waters is the stuff dreams are made of, James Bond would stay there lol. Alfred was a superb host and looked after us and the other fellow tour members very well, talking of his experiences ( he actually was an Olympic Gold medalist at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, he is a very interesting a friendly fellow ). On the way back to the cruise terminal at the end of the day, Alfred provided 2 new minibus vans for the passengers but because my wife is rather large and has mobility issues he put her and myself in his 4 wheel drive for my wife's comfort, and his lovely wife Genevieve drove us back to the cruise terminal. I can't recommend Alfred and Genevieve high enough for the tour, they are way past the five star rating here on tripadvisor, we would go on another Noumea Shore Tour with them with no doubt or hesitation, they are truly the best, we recommend Noumea Shore Private Tours very highly..just go with them, have a fun day and discover Noumea

Had a great informative tour with Alfred Great humor and knowledge Only a short visit but we would highly recommend gateway tours and transfers in noumea will definitely book through you again on our next visit

What a fanastic day trip this was with Alfred Nauka to Escapade Island Noumea. What a beautiful island and scenery. We saw and swam with the turtles this was so great to see. The Food was excellent and fantastic. Loved the ferry ride and the initial tour of sight seeing of the town was great, full of laughter and fun.Loved the swimming pool. Thank you Alfred and Genie Hope to see you again soon. Loved meeting you Alfred keep the good work up so friendly with a generous heart. Nga Mihi Kia korua, Arohanui Na Horakiuta , Thompson Herangi and family.

Alfred met us off our cruise ship with a board clearly showing our names and a huge happy smile. We fell in love with his infectious laugh and happy disposition immediately. Alfred directed us to Jeni who got our bookings all sorted and onto the air conditioned bus and Alfred took us on a well informed tiki tour around Noumea pointing out places of interest along the way. We had a break for 10 minutes at a high point on the island to take in the breathtaking views, the history and grab some selfies then it was back on the bus to the wharf where we would catch our ferry to Escapade Island. We arrived at EI which actually turned out to be Paradise. The snorkelling was fabulous, sadly we missed the turtles although some of our party were lucky enough to encounter them. The pool was very welcome in the hot sunshine and the lunch was exceptional with tons of fresh fish, prawns, chicken, cold meats, vegetables, salads and a beautiful choice of patisserie for dessert. Watersports were available if required or just relaxing in the sun, sand and sea if that's what floats your boat. A beautiful day out, exceptionally well organised by Alfred and Jeni and who wouldn't fall in love Alfred. He's just gorgeous xx

Day trip to Escapade Island was excellent, had alot of fun with tour guides, and trip over on Boat was a rough ride but really fun. The Island is so nice, but make sure you wear shoes that grip, the tiles around the restaurant are so slippery a couple of people nearly slipped on them. The Food was excellent quality and plenty of it, and the sweets where excellent. Loved the whole day.

escapade island tour

Did this day trip off a cruise ship (where the food was fantastic). The quick look around the market then off to Escapade Island by ferry. Just a fantastic visit with lunch supplied that seriously competed with the cruise ship fare. A stunning place to unwind and enjoy the crystal clear water. Great snorkelling and just the best day out. Strongly advise not to eat anything at the market as if you do you will not do justice to the lunch supplied to you on the Island day trip. Go to it!

Tremendous experience!! My family & I absolutely enjoyed our snorkeling excursion to Buck Island. We had an awesome tour of Buck Island! Our crew was made up of Miles, Amanda, and Avery! They were awesome to spend the day with! My friend and I had never snorkeled before and they went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable! They guided us through the underwater trail making sure we were doing good the whole time! We went to the other side of the island and checked out the beach for awhile and then headed back! There were a range of people from children to a few older people and also some who didn’t speak English! From the smiles on everyone’s faces getting off the crew did an amazing job! A shout out to Avery, Amanda, and Miles for the fun day! I can’t wait to bring more visitors for a tour!

We took the 1/2 day trip to Buck Island. It is a must. The water is amazing and snorkeling was great. The departure was right on time and so was the return. The crew went out of their way to help myself and my two teenagers who haven’t snorkels before. Their divers will pull you along and guide you through the reefs so you can see everything. Moe towed us and let us hold onto a lifesaver to help us until we felt comfortable enough in the open sea snorkeling. The captain was great. So friendly and so very helpful making sure everyone felt comfortable. The island is gorgeous and the beach is breathtaking.

Our sunset sail on the last evening of our trip was wonderful. Captain John and Morgan were great. It was a gorgeous sail from Christiansted almost to Buck Island just in time for the sunset. Plenty of drinks served onboard and our choice of music. And we saw 2 sea turtles which was perfect. Wave Dancer was a nice size for our family of 4…not too big but not so small that the boat would get tossed around by the waves. Would easily hold a larger group, too. Wonderful way to end an amazing week! ⛵️

Best time to visit.

Simply put, there’s no bad time to visit the Galapagos Islands. Good weather is mostly found year round, as are the animals. This being said, November through to June is the preferred time to visit, with clearer skies, calmer seas and decreased winds. Of these, March and April have less rain, while November and December are the warmest. July to November is the best time for divers as whale sharks can often be spotted at Wolf and Darwin islands.

Learn more about the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands

Culture and customs

Ever since Charles Darwin brought attention to the giant tortoises, sea lions, hammerhead sharks and other spectacular wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, people have been fascinated by this archipelago of volcanic islands. Originally a pirate hideout, people started migrating to the islands from Ecuador after it became part of the country in 1832. Of the 13 major islands and scores of smaller islands and islets that make up the Galapagos, only five of them are inhabited – about 26,000 residents spread over the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, Floreana, Baltra and San Cristobal. The wildlife rules the rest of the islands, which are carefully managed to help protect the precious environment.

Geography and environment

Located in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago of 13 major islands, six smaller islands and more than 100 islets. Some are sparsely vegetated with largely mountainous interiors, whereas others are comparatively lush with white-sand beaches. Many of the islands are in a state of flux, as continual volcanic eruptions cause them to erode and expand.

The largest island, Isabela, makes up half the land area of the Galapagos and is characterized by three active volcanos, a blue lagoon, clear lakes filled with flamingos and beaches where iguanas and sea lions roam. Santa Cruz is the second largest island with giant tortoises, marine iguanas and Galapagos crabs residing in Tortuga Bay. The oldest and most remote island, Espanola (also called Hood), boasts boobies, albatrosses and many species of birds and lizards not found anywhere else in the world.

Top wildlife to spot

1. Sea Lions

Whether you're loafing about on the beach or snorkeling offshore, you’ll be hard-pressed not to come face-to-face with these frolicsome critters at some stage. Playful, plentiful, and pretty much fearless, you’re supposed to keep a 2-meter distance from these guys at all times - though their insatiable curiosity can make this hard.

2. Marine Iguanas

The only lizards in the world that can live and forage in the ocean, the marine iguana is found solely in the Galapagos. Fierce and ferocious though these Godzilla-like reptiles may appear (Darwin called them ‘Imps of Darkness’), it’s all bluff – they only feed on algae. And with lung capacities permitting up to half an hour of underwater foraging, you’re just as likely find them gorging on the islands’ surrounding seabeds as scampering about the craggy rocks they inhabit.

3. Hammerhead Sharks

Boasting one of the animal kingdom’s most puzzling physiologies, hammerhead sharks are found in abundance off Wolf, Bartolome, Santa Cruz and Darwin islands. Unlike most sharks, they will often merge into schools of over 100 during the day - making for some incredible and surreal photo opportunities. And with no known human fatalities and a wealth of choice natural prey on offer, diving amongst them isn’t as scary or dangerous as one might think.

Darwin finches gave rise to one of the most game-changing theories of all time. By studying the differences between finches from different islands, Darwin hypothesized that the birds’ adaptations to their habitats resulted in their mutation into different species: his Theory of Evolution.

5. Giant Tortoises

No trip to the islands is complete without a visit to its most famous residents. Weighing up to 882 pounds, regularly living for more than 100 years, and able to go for up to 1 year without food, these gentle and slow-moving monsters are an intriguing and humbling spectacle to observe.

6. Sea Turtles

Snorkeling alongside these majestic creatures of the deep (or more accurately, the shallows) is one of those rare, life-affirming moments that makes a trip to the Galapagos immediately worthwhile. Keep your eyes peeled on the beaches for turtle nests too - the Galapagos is a hotbed of activity for these critters.

7. Blue-Footed Boobies

Despite essentially looking like handsome seagulls with painted toenails, blue-footed boobies, when caught hunting, serve up one of the Galapagos' most thrilling spectacles. Diving from heights of up to 100ft, groups of boobies hit the water at speeds up around 60km per hour. They usually let out a shrill whistle before letting rip, which means you'll usually have warning enough to get your camera out too. How considerate.

8. Flightless Cormorants

Granted, a flightless cormorant spotted on land isn't one of the most invigorating sights you'll see during your time here. But wait until you don your snorkel gear and spot one weaving elegantly through the water - the flightless cormorant will likely become one of your favorite discoveries in the Galapagos Islands for this reason alone.

9. Frigatebird

With its striking wingspan and deeply-forked tail, the magnificent frigate bird is easily one of the most impressive birds in the skies of the Galapagos archipelago. But they don't have such a swell reputation amongst other birds. Whilst they hunt fish on the oceans surface, they also force their winged brethren to regurgitate their food, which then they eat - a process known as kleptoparasitism. Still, they look gorgeous – particularly the males, with their bright-red chin sac.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Galapagos Islands?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in the Galapagos Islands?

While tipping isn’t mandatory, tips are very much appreciated by service workers and guides.

Leaving a 10% tip is customary in restaurants.

Some automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill, in which case an extra tip isn’t required.

What is the weather like in the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands enjoy almost perfect weather all year with two distinct seasons offering warmer, rainier months and cooler, drier months.

Temperatures rarely dip below 70°F or reach higher than 90°F. You can travel to the islands anytime throughout the year and experience fantastic weather.

Light rainfall is expected from January to May (along with high humidity levels), but it never lasts for long and doesn't often turn into heavier downpours.

What is the internet access like in the Galapagos Islands?

There are reliable internet cafes in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) and Puerto Baquerizo (San Cristobal Island).

Some hotels and restaurants on other islands will have a Wi-Fi connection, but it is best not to rely on it.

Can I use my cell phone in the Galapagos Islands?

There's good cell phone reception on the larger islands, but don’t expect it when at sea. The best local telephone companies are Porta and Movistar.

Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in the Galapagos Islands?

Most towns have Western-style flushable toilets, though you will likely encounter squat toilets as well. Regardless, it’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the water in the Galapagos Islands?

Tap water isn’t considered safe to drink in the Galapagos Islands.

Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it.

Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the Galapagos Islands?

No, credit cards are not widely accepted.

There are a handful of shops on Santa Cruz that may accept major credit cards, but it’s preferable to pay in cash.

How many islands make up the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands are made up of 13 larger islands and more than 60 smaller islands and islets. 5 islands are habitable to just over 30,000 people.

These 5 islands are Isla Baltra, Isla Floreana, Isla Isabela, Isla Santa Cruz, and Isla San Cristobal.

What is ATM access like in Galapagos Island?

The banks in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo have ATMs.

The Banco del Pacifico in both towns is open from 8 am to 3:30 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 12.30 pm on Saturdays.

It's best to withdraw your money on the mainland in case these are out of order.

Check each bank's website for up-to-date opening hours.

What public holidays are celebrated in the Galapagos Islands?

  • 6 Jan: Epiphany

  • 31 Dec: New Year's Eve

Please note, Galapagos Islands public holidays may vary.

Are the Galapagos Islands a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

The Galapagos Islands are a relatively hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers.

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Ecuador in 2008. The country hosts several fiestas where it’s acceptable for men to cross-dress as women.

However, homophobic attitudes do exist among the older generations. It is best to avoid public displays of affection where possible.

For more detailed advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

What to drink in the Galapagos Islands

Quench your thirst after a glorious day spent exploring the Galapagos  by sipping on a glass of canelazo, horchata tea, or freshly made fruit juice.

During your cruise around the islands, it makes sense to try as many traditional Ecuadorian drinks as you can, especially since there are heaps to choose from.

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Wondering which are the best Coron Island Hopping Tours to spend your money on? We know the feeling!

Having tried and tested the tours we can help you pick the right tour for you.

After experiencing all there was to offer in  El Nido , we moved on to Coron (only a short boat ride away).

Like El Nido, Coron is an area where boat tours whisk you to jaw-dropping lagoons, reefs and white sand beaches.

Which Coron Tour should I take? 4 Coron Tours which Rocked!

We did the 4 main tours in Coron with JY Travel & Tours . They were all absolutely amazing!

Know which tour you’re interested in? Jump right to it here:

The Ultimate Tour – For those who only want 1 Tour

The Ultimate Tour is exactly as the name suggests – it showcases the best & most iconic areas Coron has to offer.

If we had time for only one tour in Coron, this would be it. The stunning lagoons and amazing landscapes are unique to Coron and something you do not see everyday.

The Ultimate Tour costs 1200 PHP per person ($22 USD).

The tour includes: hotel transfers, an experienced guide & lunch. It does not include the use of kayaks (1000 PHP per kayak).

Tips for the Ultimate Tour:

  • Unlike the El Nido tours, hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as part of the tour involves viewing of an underwater ship wreck;
  • Hiring a kayak is advantageous but not essential. You can also enjoy the Twin Lakes by swimming.

Kayangan Lake

The first destination of the day is Kayangan Lake. This is perhaps the attraction we were most excited to see in Coron due to the perfect turquoise water.

To reach this attraction, it involves a 367 step climb.

Luckily half way up, you will find an absolutely stunning view of Coron.

As this is one of the most iconic views of Coron, there was quite a line up to get this shot. Well worthwhile for a beautiful memory though!

And yes, the hike is completely worth every agonising step up as at the bottom you are rewarded with some of the clearest water in Asia with absolutely stunning natural rock formations.

The water is in fact so clear that you can see garfish swimming around you in the lake.

You are not allowed to swim in Kayangan Lake without a life jacket so make sure you bring one with you from the boat!

Barracuda Lake

Our next stop was Barracuda Lake. This was an unexpected stop and a “bonus stop” of our tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed Barracuda Lake and would recommend trying to book a tour which includes it.

If anyone is also interested in the best place to free dive in Coron – this is the place to do it! The underwater rock formations at Barracuda Lake are absolutely unreal.

We did not free dive but we had an opportunity to snorkel at Barracuda Lake and were very happy with the opportunity to be able to swim & snorkel in one of Coron’s most iconic locations.

We could also see the beautiful underwater rock formations just by snorkeling as the water is SO clear in Barracuda Lake. The visibility is unparalleled anywhere else we visited in Palawan.

Following Barracuda Lake is one spot we were eagerly awaiting. It’s one of the most iconic spots of Coron – the Twin Lake.

Twin Lake is known for the beautiful colour of water & stunning rock formations.

Here you have the opportunity to use rented kayaks. It is advisable but not absolutely necessary to kayak at Twin Lake.

After a fun time swimming & kayaking in the lake, we enjoyed a delicious lunch aboard the boat. This consisted of grilled fish, rice, vegetables, chicken & fruit.

Japanese Ship Wreck

The next stop is a Japanese ship wreck. It was very cool seeing a Japanese ship wreck from WW2 submerged underwater.

As stated above, it is advisable to hire or buy snorkel gear for this tour as it is fascinating to see the ship wreck.

The final stop of the day was CYC beach.

You can swim or use your kayak to access the beach.

Interestingly, we met a French tourist camping overnight on CYC beach. He had actually come on a day trip and asked if he could be collected the next day.

An option for anyone who wants to get back to nature for a night. Ask your tour if this is possible in advance. The tourist brought all his own supplies.

As we got back on the boat, we were treated to “Turon” a Filipino specialty which is banana wrapped in spring roll paper and fried.

Turon was one of the extra perks on our tour with JY Travel and Tours and one of the many reasons why we love them!

Coron Escapade Tour

The next tour we took of Coron was the Escapade Tour . We choose this tour as we wanted to see some spots further away from Coron where fewer tours (and tourists) go.

We recommend this tour for those looking for beautiful beaches further away from Coron.

There are less stops included in this tour as the first stop is 1.5 hours boat ride from Coron.

Tips for the Escapade Tour:

  • Hiring/buying reef shoes is not really a necessity. We did not hire the reef shoes and were perfectly fine;
  • Bringing or hiring a snorkel is worthwhile as the snorkeling on this tour is amazing;
  • Hiring a kayak on this tour is not necessary.

Malcapuya Island

The first stop was Malcapuya Island. This Island is absolutely beautiful – white sand beaches & crystal clear water.

Malcapuya Island Coron

What we also loved about this beach was that there are plenty of tables & chairs to sit on at the beach to keep shaded in the hot weather in the Philippines.

This island is also great for off shore snorkeling so if you have brought or hired a snorkel, this is a great opportunity to see some beautiful reef life.

Banana Island

After enjoying snorkeling and swimming at Malcapuya Island, it was time to stop for lunch at Banana Island.

The JY crew prepared the most delicious lunch at Banana Island consisting of grilled fish, chicken, rice & fresh fruit.

Banana Island is also a great place to snorkel. If you feel energised after lunch we highly recommend snorkeling at Banana Island as it was one of the best snorkeling spots we experienced in the Philippines.

Metres from shore Mike found a huge school of fish on a feeding frenzy – check out our Instagram story highlights for more about this!

Bulog Dos Island

The island we were most excited about visiting for the day was Bulog Dos Island , which features a stunning white sandbar which protrudes from the beach.

Alas, we are not very lucky with sandbars. Just like our visit to Snake Island, El Nido – we visited at high tide so the ocean covered most of the sandbar.

Even though the full sandbar was not visible Bulog Dos was still an absolutely beautiful island. The snorkeling on this island is also fabulous.

There is also a viewpoint on this Island where you can get some pretty cool Instagram shots.

Calauit Safari Tour

One of the reasons we were excited to visit Coron was to see African animals at the Calauit Safari.

We had seen this safari park on Instagram and were amazed that there was really African animals living in the Philippines. I mean, how cool is that?

Coron Safari

This tour starts even earlier than regular El Nido and Coron tours. The pickup time for the Coron Safari tour is 5am.

We actually didn’t realise this and managed to miss our tour one morning. Not recommended. All of the island tours in Coron start at around 8am. This is different – be prepared.

The first stop is for a local breakfast for those who want it. Breakfast is 100 pesos per person and includes 2 eggs, Filipino sausages & rice.

From here, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the entry to the safari park.

The safari park is a very interesting experience and definitely not be missed if you are in Coron.

A cool quirk of the park is that it’s located on an island reachable only by boat. It really felt like we were visiting Jurassic Park as our boat trundled up to this densely green island where rare animals awaited.

We found the boat ride over to the island to be pretty fun in itself.

When you first arrive, you get to feed the giraffes. It was so fun to be able to feed these animals. They were quite cheeky too so hold on to your branch or they will take it in one bite!

From there the rangers take you around the park to have a longer look at the animals and take photographs.

You can get fairly close to the giraffes and zebras in order to take a beautiful photo. The rangers don’t like you getting closer than 3-4 metres.

On the safari, the ranger also took us to see turtles, monkeys & a large snake.

It was a great experience and we would highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals.

After the safari, we had a quick pitstop at a local beach before heading back to the same restaurant as breakfast for lunch.

Black Island

After lunch the group split into two: those who wanted to see a waterfall & those who wanted to see Black Island.

We choose to skip the waterfall in favour of Black Island, an absolutely beautiful island off the north coast of Coron.

There is also an amazing cave on the island with a natural swimming hole. If you feel like an icey cold dip, you can even take a swim in the cave.

We arrived in Coron after a ferry ride from El Nido. The boat from El Nido arrrives at around 10am in the morning. This means it is too late to do a boat tour.

However, we didn’t need to waste any time as we were able to join the Coron Town Tour! This tour starts at 4pm in the afternoon.

Admittedly, we are not usually fans of town tours. We would rather DIY. However, as this tour requires an after dark transfer to the hot springs 30 minutes from town, we think it’s good value and more convenient than taking a tuk tuk.

We would highly recommend it if you have an extra afternoon spare while you are in Coron.

Lualhati Park

The first stop on the Coron Town Tour is Lualhati Park.

This was our least favourite spot of the tour but it was only a short stop for 10 minutes.

Basically, it is a nice river view walk/dock boat. Locals sell various souvenirs here and if you haggle, you can get a great price!

Mt Tapyas View Deck

The highlight of the Tour in our opinion was what came next – Tapyas View Deck.

The view and scenery at the View Deck is sublime.

We were not expecting this kind of countryside in the fisherman village of Coron and we were totally blown away.

In order to access the view deck, it is around a 20 minute stair climb to the top. We found it reasonably tiring (we were quite exhausted at the top).

Our guide told us that older people still manage to make it so it is definitely a doable hike!

From on side of the mountain a view deck with a beautiful vista of Coron town. On the other side is beautiful yellow rolling countryside like the one pictured below.

Mt Tapyas View Deck is the perfect place to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

One of the reasons for the late start of this tour is so you can sit down and enjoy the sun set over Coron.

Maquinit Hot spring

After a steep climb uphill, what is better than relaxing tired muscles under the stars?

We weren’t sure what to expect of Maquinit Hot Spring but we were pleasantly surprised.

The hot spring was so relaxing. It is extremely hot though and hard to stay in longer than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Luckily, there is a little cafe where you can buy cheap drinks and relax around the hot springs while you steam off.

Our group preferred to stay longer at the bigger attractions. There were a few attractions we missed in this tour: Town Plaza, Souvenir Shops, St Augustine Church & the cashew harvest.

What is great about JY Travel & Tours – they listen to the needs of the group and their preferences.

We loved that the tour is adaptable to individuals interests.

Which Tour Company? JY Travel & Tour

All Tours of Coron we did with JY Travel & Tours. We couldn’t recommend this company highly enough.

The staff were fun, professional and looked after our safety the entire time. They were also very helpful with information about the surrounds.

Not only are the staff fabulous but they serve a fabulous lunch consisting of grilled fish, chicken, pork, prawns, grilled vegetables, rich & fruit.

If you are looking for a tour in Coron, we would highly recommend this company.

You can find more information on  JY Travel & Tour   website . You can also them on Facebook &  Instagram .

Where to Stay in Coron

Coron Island Escapade Tour, Palawan

After a fun-filled day with lots of snorkeling on the Super Ultimate Tour , I thought it was time to take a break from snorkeling and enjoy more of the beaches Coron had to offer. And so I booked the Island Escapade Tour on my second full day in Coron, Palawan.

About the Coron Island Escapade Tour

The Island Escapade Tour explores some of smaller islands slightly further out (compared to Coron Island). There seems to be 2 different itineraries for the Island Escapade Tour, each having 3 stops. The first common itinerary included Malcapuya Island, Banana Island and Bulog Dos Island/ Sandbar. The second consists of Malcapuya Island, Coco Beach and Ditaytayan Island/ Sandbar. You may want to check with the tour company which itinerary they’re going on, as I signed up with a company listing the first itinerary but ended up on the second one. If you’re not particular it’s fine too as both are awesome itineraries.

Prices (as of July 2019) range between 1,200 PHP and 1,700 PHP, more towards 1,200 PHP but anything much more or less than that range is suspect. You won’t need to find these tour companies, they’ll find you the moment you step out of the airport. Take your time to shop around town to find a company you’re comfortable with. I booked with Wonderful Island through my guesthouse as I trusted my hosts and didn’t had time to look around. Was also easier to handle any changes or passing of information.

Inclusives and schedule

The tour includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation in Coron Town on Busuanga island, lunch, a small afternoon snack and drinking water from a dispenser on board (better to bring your bottle for convenience). It’s possible to go snorkeling at the stops too, but snorkeling gear rental is not included in the price (usually 150 PHP). If renting snorkeling gear remember to get it from the stall on Busuanga before setting off!

Pick up starts around 7.30/ 8.00 am and you’ll be dropped off around 5pm. You’ll have about an hour at each stop (one of them being lunch). While it is a one day tour, it takes a full hour and a half to two to reach the group of islands. Between them traveling time is about half an hour each.

That’s probably all the information you’ll need on the Island Escapade Tour, time to head in!

Heading to Malcapuya Island

We left just past 9 in the morning. Unlike the previous day, the weather looked threatening from the start. Already missing the blue skies of yesterday. But it has to be done, or rather I was already on board. Unlike the Super Ultimate Tour where everything was close by, it was almost two hours before we reached our first stop. Was nice too, since it was a holiday and things were supposed to slow a little.

Coron Island.

Malcapuya Island

Fortunately, the skies were still holding up when we reached Malcapuya Island. The boats parked on one side of the island, and there’s a slight uphill to conquer before getting to the famed beaches of Malcapuya Island.

Malcapuya Island.

Over on the other side, a white sandy beach that stretched the length of the island. It’s possible to snorkel here. Locals were offering to pull groups further out for a short round to the coral for 100 PHP per person. There was rope attached perpendicularly across the floaters where you can hold on and he’ll just drive it out. Wasn’t prepared for snorkeling just yet so walked the length of the beach and hung out at one of the shelters chatting with other tourists.

Malcapuya Island, Island Escapade Tour Coron.

In that weather it didn’t exactly feel like island paradise, but it was still a beautiful island, and I would happily spend a day there with a book and some coffee. Unfortunately or not amenities are very basic on Malcapuya Island. And if you’re wondering if it’s possible to stay overnight here, it does seem possible, as this blogger and this blogger had done.

Malcapuya Island, Island Escapade Tour Coron.

After slightly over an hour we got back on the boat and headed to our next stop. We made a round around Malcapuya Island and here’s the view of the beach from further out at sea.

Malcapuya Island.

Coco Beach/ Bulalacao Island

About half an hour later we arrived an almost empty beach of powdery sand fronted by a coconut trees, couple of swings and shelters. This was Coco Beach on Bulalacao Island. On another side of this island is the luxurious Two Seasons Coron Island and Spa . After the spectacular lunch spot on the previous day this was yet another stunning lunch stop in Coron.

Coco Beach, Island Escapade Tour Coron.

The shelters below are where tour groups stop by for lunch.

Coco Beach, Island Escapade Tour Coron.

By the time we were done many other groups had arrived and the beach was getting a little crowded. Glad to get away!

Coco Beach, Bulalacao Island.

Finally the clouds gave way while we were heading towards our last stop, Ditaytayan Sandbar. We could see the clouds melting into the sea in the distance, and we were heading right into it. Definitely looked terrifying.

Coron in a storm.

Ditaytayan Sandbar/ Island

Another half an hour later, we arrived at Ditaytayan Sandbar, a narrow strip of sand stretching out from the island. The wind was blowing strong, and everyone on board was apprehensive to get off. The crew took the lead, jumped off and ran towards shore. Shortly afterwards everyone followed.

Ditaytayan Sandbar/ Ditaytayan Island, Coron Island Escapade Tour.

It was pretty crazy as the crew tried to get a group shot for everyone then individual shots, at the edge of the storm with the wind blowing harder by the minute. Not the perfect day for pictures, but I think everyone had fun trying to take them.

Ditaytayan Sandbar/ Ditaytayan Island, Coron Island Escapade Tour.

There were two dogs on the sandbar too. It was cute to see them sitting together staring out into the sea. Occasionally one will get distracted but the other will follow pretty quickly and they stuck together for most of the time. It was quite adorable.

Dogs on Ditaytayan Sandbar.

After the shots were done the drizzle started. Everyone either ran back to the boat to take shelter or headed out to snorkel. Which wasn’t a bad idea too. I was just chilling on the boat for awhile, then decided to check out the underwater scene.

Coral at Ditaytayan Sandbar, Coron Island Escapade Tour.

A little cloudy from the rain that day, but no less fascinating.

Coral at Ditaytayan Sandbar, Coron Island Escapade Tour.

Finally it was time to go. The rain was getting stronger anyway so I think everyone was fine calling it a day slightly earlier.

Ditaytayan Sandbar/ Ditaytayan Island, Coron Island Escapade Tour.

Back to Busuanga Island

It was another hour and a half ride back to Busuanga Island. Wasn’t fun being on the boat when it was raining. While there was overhead shelter, the sides were open, and the movement of the boat made each raindrop feel like a pellet. An umbrella might have limited usefulness here. Maybe a full body raincoat would work better.

Coron Island in a storm.

End of the Island Escapade Tour Coron

While weather was less than ideal it was nonetheless a fun day out. I can only imagine how amazing a trip to these islands would be during the sunny season. If you’re planning a trip to Palawan do avoid the typhoon season between June and November as weather is predictably unpredictable. Turned out this was to be my last full day trip out to sea, as the storm descended on Coron the following day and ships and boats were barred from going out to sea. I missed that warning and found myself out at sea on a tiny wooden boat the next day , more on that in the next post!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the shuttle boat and the adventure tours.

In a nutshell, the Shuttle Boat includes your trip to and from Crab Island and does not include any additional activities. The Adventure Tour offers an additional stop at the Gulf Islands National Seashore, where there are activities set up, such as stand up paddleboards, kayaks, snorkel gear, and banana boat ride which are all included in the ticket price.

Does the water really look like the pictures?

We are very lucky that so many days here in Destin look exactly like the beautiful photos and videos you see on our website & other marketing materials. However, you should be aware that all of our water adventures are outdoors and influenced by Mother Nature. Many days the water at Crab Island is crystal clear and aquamarine in color; others are not. Though we hope that every day is perfect, we are not in control of the wind, waves, tides, clouds, rain or underwater sea life.

What Should I bring for Crab Island?

Pack like you would to visit the beach or pool. Your belongings should be able to fit on your lap or under your seat, similar to airline carry-on baggage. For your convenience, our on-site store offers many of the items you would need for your day at Crab Island, including beer and wine. You may also purchase food to go from The Edge Seafood Restaurant (you will receive 10% off with your tour boat wristband). You may also want to bring cash for Crab Island vendors if you would like to use their services while on the sandbar, and gratuity for captain and crew (optional, but customary & appreciated!).

Can I bring a cooler? What about alcohol?

Yes! Food and non-alcoholic drinks are available for sale at Crab Island. If you prefer to bring your own, you can bring a small “six pack” size cooler to store under your seat for your visit to Crab Island. Food, drink, and alcohol are allowed to be brought on the boat (no glass bottles, please.). Beer, wine, and liquor are available for purchase at check-in from The Edge Seafood Restaurant .

Do you drop us off at Crab Island and leave us there?

Crab Island is a sandbar and is completely submerged underwater. For your safety, we are unable to drop you off in the middle of the water and leave you there. Our captain and crew will stay with you for the duration of the tour. If you would like to spend a longer period of time at Crab Island, we recommend renting a boat from  Destin Vacation Boat Rentals.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours notice of cancellation for reasons other than inclement weather at the time of departure. Cancellations made before the 48 hour deadline will be issued a full refund minus a 3% processing fee. In the event that your reservation is cancelled by management for bad weather at the time of your excursion, we will do our best to reschedule you or you may cancel at no charge at that time. Cancellations made with fewer than 48 hours notice or no-shows will not be eligible for a refund. Unfortunately, we are not able to refund guests for every illness, family emergency, death in the family, delayed flight, or unexpected crisis that may occur. To protect against these types of situations, travel insurance is highly recommended .

Are reservations required?

Advance reservations are required as we do sell out daily during peak (Summer) season and cannot guarantee a spot on the boat if you do not have a reservation. During Spring and Fall months, we require a minimum number of seats to run a trip. If the minimum number is not met, the tour will be canceled/rescheduled. Please book in advance so we know you plan on coming.

Is there shade on the boat?

The Shuttle Boat and the Adventure Tour boats are partially shaded and offer full-sun seats or full-shade seats, depending on your preference. You may also get off the boat and enjoy the sunshine once we get to the Adventure Park/Crab Island. Lotion sunscreen is highly recommended, even if you plan to stay on the boat, as the sun’s rays do reflect off the water. Spray and aerosol sunscreens are not allowed as they may damage the boat. Lotion suncreen is available for purchase on site.

Do babies count as passengers?

Yes. The United States Coast Guard counts every living, breathing person on the boat as a passenger on the vessel. We are legally only allowed to carry a certain number of total passengers (plus captain and crew), so please make sure to purchase a seat for each person in your group. Additionally, if the total weight of your group exceeds 250lbs per person (for example a family of 4 that weighs more than 1000lbs), please let us know when booking so that we can block off additional seats so as not to exceed the weight limit on the boat.

Are Crab Island attractions included in the ticket price?

Shuttle Boat tickets include your transportation to and from Crab Island only. The vendors at Crab Island are separate businesses and are NOT included in the ticket price. We do offer the Crab Island Adventure Tour that includes activities such as kayaks, paddleboards, banana boat, and snorkeling along the Gulf Islands National Seashore in addition to a stop at Crab Island if you are looking for more than just transportation.

How long is the boat ride to Crab Island?

It only takes about 5 minutes to get to Crab Island from our location on the Destin Harbor.

Will there be other people with us on the boat?

Yes, unless you book a private trip, you will be sharing the experience with others who also purchase individual tickets on the boat.

What happened to the water park?

The National Parks Service outlawed the use of inflatable slides, trampolines, etc. at Crab Island and in surrounding areas. We still include all permitted activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling within the bounds of the park, and have added a dolphin tour and banana boat rides as part of our adventure tour . We also decreased the ticket price to reflect the new offerings.

Are pets allowed?

We allow service animals only. A service animal is any dog that has been trained to perform tasks to benefit an individual. The work performed must be directly related to the individual’s disability. According to the ADA, service animals for emotional support, therapy, comfort or companionship are not considered service animals.

The guest requiring the service animal must be in possession of the animal at all times. Due to the nature of Crab Island tours, the guest and the service animal may be required to remain on the boat for the entirety of the tour. This is to ensure the guest’s safety as well as that of the service animal, Destin wildlife, other guests, captain and crew.

Deciding where to watch whales in Washington can be difficult. Anacortes is strategically placed to offer the best whale viewing opportunities. There's no company that sees more whales than Island Adventures. As members of the Pacific Whale Watch Association, we have access to the best whale-sightings network in the world. If whales in the area, we know it. High-speed, low profile vessels often travel past whales without seeing them. Our elevated wheelhouses and upper decks allow us to find more whales, spot them sooner, and view them better than smaller boats.

Meet the Most Comfortable Boat in the Area

Island explorer 5 was built specifically built for whale watching..

Our goal is to show you as many whales as possible, and with the Island Explorer 5 , we do that better than any other company. To ensure comfort and quality, we don't book our vessels to full capacity. Every passenger has unobstructed front-row viewing. You won't be stuck inside looking through glass or forced to stand behind other guests.

Due to the design and stability of our vessel, we don’t force you to to sit down while we’re underway. Grab a hot cup of chili or a cold local brew while moving freely around our fully walk-around viewing decks. When you’d like to sit, however, we have plenty of options for everyone. The Island Explorer 5 has comfortable indoor heated cabins and outdoor, wind-protected areas with padded seating. No other vessel comes close to the comfort of the Island Explorer 5 .

Some of the features that set us apart from the pack are things you’ll never see. Our vessel is equipped with large, low-noise propellers and above-water exhaust to create a quieter experience for the whales. While watching whales, our vessel make less noise than the ambient sound of rain hitting the surface. We’ve modernized our boat by investing in equipment that not only meets but exceeds current emissions standards.

Island Explorer 5

Whale guarantee, we guarantee whales on every whale watching tour..

If you do not see a whale (orca, minke, gray, or humpback) with us, you can come again for 50% off your next tour. It’s that simple.

  • Species Covered: Bigg's killer whales, Southern Resident killer whales, humpback, minke, and/or gray whales
  • Date Range: Year-Round
  • Sighting Success Rate: Over 97% since 1996. Our Whale Report shows a detailed account of every tour. We rarely miss!

Where do we see whales?

We've integrated SPOT satellite technology to upload the precise GPS coordinates of the day's sightings to an interactive map on our website. As you'll see from the map, whales don't live in one spot. In fact, whales travel more than 100 miles in a 24 hour period! The Island Explorer 5 has the largest range in the area with the highest whale sighting success rate. It's a common misconception that small boats get closer to whales. Each vessel – regardless of size – is required to adhere to state and federal whale viewing laws. Large boats offer more stability, comfort, and added amenities (real bathrooms, onboard cafés, and much more). Our spacious vessel with multiple viewing decks offer an unparalleled photography platform that small boats simply cannot offer.

Our daily Whale Report is the most comprehensive record of whale sightings by a whale watch company in the industry. Every day, our professional naturalists record an account of the day and upload images. Check it out –– the Whale Report dates back to 2003!

Bewitching Greece with All Inclusive beach stay

The best part of the tour was the communication with Rose, Wendy, Sam and Alberto. The promptness, clarity and helpfulness in their communication was impressive. Their role in organising transport etc was commendable. Many good wishes for their good work! My suggestions for some other aspects: 1. If a person opts for a group tour, at least inform them in advance that it will be not be a group tour if it so happens, rather than leaving it to them to discover when they find themselves alone on reaching the destination. 2. Select your hotels carefully keeping in mind that your customers are paying you money to have an enjoyable tour experience that a tourist looks for. If you give a hotel which is located at a completely secluded place and does not offer even the basic facilities, it spoils a tourist's experience to a large extent. 3. Prepare a standard guiding document for your various tours, like many good tour companies do. This type of document includes helpful suggestions on what to expect, what to pack, what kind of weather, what precautions to take, currency suggestions, location and shopping scenarios etc. If you have a ready and comprehensive document like this, you can share it with all your customers for a particular tour well in time. This will avoid their having to ask many questions individually. Good luck. Madhavi

The tour was quite a good mix of organised and leisure time, but the last day could have been managed better. We arrived at Oia about half an hour before sunset, had no direction as to where to see the sunset from, and no time to experience this beautiful town. Very dissapointed in that.

Incredible Crete! Tour

Incredible Crete!

The tour of Crete was indeed Incredible due to two great gentlemen! RG and Kostintinos displayed the utmost professionalism and class as they drove us all through the island of Crete. They were very genuine and thoughtful to Michele and I throughout the entire trip. They both knew that we were eager to experience and learn about Crete. Michele and I wanted to see Crete through the eyes of the locals that’s reside there and RG and Kostas delivered! We went off the grid and had experiences with Epos Tours that we never could have planned ourselves. Kostas is a wealth of information regarding the culture and history of Crete. From the minute you meet these two men you will bond and have the best travel experience ever! Miss you both and thanks again!
