Wednesday 5th April. Bush Hall, London. Alejandro Escovedo. It’s been fifteen years since I last saw Alejandro Escovedo at the Borderline way back in 02. Not a regular visitor to these shores we weren’t going to miss this opportunity to see him again especially with a full band. Of the band he only met this fine bunch of Italian musicians a few weeks ago and they are accompanying him throughout his extensive European tour.

Whilst ostensibly touring in support of his fine current album ‘Burn Something Beautiful’ the set is drawn from across his extensive back catalogue. It’s a good mix up of rock, punk and acoustic moments with Escovedo effortlessly switching between. Just don’t call it Americana. Whilst he eschews the label Americana to categorise his style of music over the past twenty years I still think it fits.

What he does bring are his roots of punk to the proceedings and when the band rock they really rock and the talented Antonio Gramentieri from the support band Don Antonio ably provides the licks to Escovedo’s rhythm.

There a number of influences on display tonight especially from these isles with the likes of T Rex and even an appearance of John Perry from the Only Ones during the encore. Consider the band have been together less than a month the sound is tight and they don’t miss a beat.

On a night of many highlights stand outs for me were the rockin ‘Castanets’ and I had a soft spot for ‘Sally was a Cop’ since it came out.

Again Bush Hall delivers with a great concert and it really is the best venue of its size in London. A brilliant night of music and let’s hope Mr E doesn’t leave it so long till he returns to these shores. (Acoustic tent at Glastonbury please).

Without wanting to categorise keep on folk, country, Americana, punk rockin’ y’all.

Coming from a family of musicians, it’s easy to be overshadowed by another family member, but Alejandro Escovedo broke free of this trap at a young age when he made a break into the singer/songwriter scene. Starting out as a member in a band, Escovedo has had extensive experience performing with other musicians, which was evident in his performance with the way that he interacted with his own band onstage.

He opened the show with the track Sally Was a Cop, which as a slow track, got everyone moving to the front of the auditorium to sing along and wave their arms in the air in appreciation of the music. After the song he stopped to introduce himself and the band and had a bit of a chat with the audience. He mentioned his collaborations with Ryan Adams, which had everyone cheering, and he even played Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight for everyone.

Seeing him play his acoustic solo set was wonderful as his vocal and instrumental talents were equally balanced, and it was great for us as an audience to really appreciate the skill involved in his musicianship. His backing vocalists, guitarists, and drummer were also phenomenal musicians, and the way that they created an additional depth to Escovedo’s sound was a wonderful touch to the performance.

“Musically, Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre.”

— Rolling Stone

“Escovedo has blended the lyricism of Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne with the raw power of the Stooges and the Velvet Underground… the result is music with heart, brains, and a burning sense of adventure.”

A celebrated singer and songwriter, Alejandro Escovedo has as eclectic a background and body of work as any rock artist of his generation. Escovedo is comfortable performing with a string ensemble as well as with an amped-up power trio, and as likely to bare his soul in his lyrics as he is to display some serious rock & roll swagger. He had already played an important role in punk (with the Nuns), roots rock (the True Believers), and alt-country (Rank & File) before he launched a solo career that’s seen him work with everyone from Tony Visconti, John Cale to Bruce Springsteen. Beginning with 1992’s Gravity , Escovedo's music has been consistently literate, ambitious, and eclectic, with 2001’s A Man Under the Influence exploring different genres and approaches from track to track, while 2008’s Real Animal and 2016’s Burn Something Beautiful focused on passionate, guitar-based rock & roll. 2018’s The Crossing (and its 2021 Spanish-language counterpart La Cruzada ) told a richly detailed story of the immigrant experience.

Live Review: Alejandro Escovedo @ The Hamilton Live — 10/21/23

Live Review: Alejandro Escovedo @ The Hamilton Live — 10/21/23

There are artists who have this incredible way of condensing whole stories into three or four minutes. And these stories aren’t just told through the lyrics but the way the music — the notes, the rhythm — all fits together. Alejandro Escovedo is a master at telling tales — both autobiographical and fictional. At a crowded hall at The Hamilton Live, Mr. Escovedo recently weaved such tales in the way I’ve only seen him do it.

I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Alejandro Escovedo perform both with a band and solo — and at The Hamilton Live on Oct. 21, he brought along Scott Danbom of Centro-matic on keyboards and Austin musician Mark Henne on drums. The feel of songs like “Sonica USA,” about representation in rock ‘n’ roll and that sense of finding a community, hits a little different with drums, keys, and electric guitar.

escovedo tour

Alejandro and company started their set with “Wave” from one of my favorite records, A Man Under the Influence . When you hear that first line of “Wave” — Wave goodbye, everybody waves goodbye — you can picture families getting on those trains as he sings.

On songs like the aforementioned “Sonica USA” and “Teenage Luggage” there’s this real feeling of channeling that youthful angst. Particularly in “Teenage Luggage” as Alejandro shouts through a big harmonica mic, “You don’t know me!”

Watch Alejandro Escovedo perform “Teenage Luggage” live for KXT Live Sessions :

In between songs, Alejandro told the crowd stories of how some of these classic songs were made — from traveling Italy to writing with Chuck Prophet.

As Alejandro took a break to chat with the audience, Mark and Scott picked up acoustic instruments to join him to perform to the audience without any microphones. They even played the old John Prine song, “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” with just acoustic guitar, violin, tambourine, and that trio of voices.

After that much quieter, intimate set later songs like “Sally Was a Cop” (always my personal favorite) and especially “Castanets” felt like they had an extra jolt of electricity (both figuratively and, well, literally). People in the crowd even got up and danced in front of the stage.

And I was heartened to hear a song from one of my all time favorite musicians, Vic Chesnutt, as Alejandro came back out to encore “Maiden.”

Alejandro told the crowd that the band is planning on releasing music soon and that he will be releasing new songs in the near future. In the meantime, Alejandro and company continue their tour through the end of November.

It really is a special thing to witness this legend in person.

The setlist included:

Wave Sometimes Dearhead On the Wall Break This Time Teenage Luggage Sonica USA San Antonio Rain (acoustic) Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (John Prine cover) (acoustic) Something Blue (acoustic) Rosalie Sally Was a Cop Castanets

Alejandro Escovedo

“I can take a punch, I can take a swing,” sings Alejandro Escovedo on “Man of the World,” the opening salvo of Big Station , his new album on Fantasy Records. The two phrases well describe his 35 years as a musician and two decades as a solo artist, the sum of which attests to the redemptive power of rock’n’roll and the driving role that it has played in his life and art.

A stylistic synthesist who Rolling Stone notes “is in his own genre,” Escovedo casts his widest musical net to date on Big Station . The title can infer two meanings: A transit junction where journeys converge and then head off to new destinations, and a potent radio signal with an open playlist that brims with diversity and adventurous imagination.

The album begins with a blast of tongue-in-cheek bravado on “Man of the World” set to a shimmering meld of classic guitar rock and new wave bop. Themes of transition are the fulcrum for songs like the syncopated bounce of the title track and the ghostly march of “Sally Was A Cop,” which surveys the havoc wrought by Mexico’s drug cartels. A jazzy muted trumpet and saxophone weave through his rumination on love and determination on “Can’t Make Me Run.” Change, decay and Escovedo’s place in the world are explored in songs that touch down in the city where he has lived for decades, Austin, TX, as well as his nearby birthplace on, respectively, the Dylanesque “The Bottom of the World” and the dark-hued melodicism of “San Antonio Rain.”

He reflects on characters from his rebel past with searing tension on “Headstrong Crazy Fools,” while the specter of failed romance wafts through the airy “Never Stood A Chance” and “Too Many Tears” simmers with the friction of desire rubbing up against heartbreak. Rocking danceable grooves drive his existential questions on “Common Mistake” and the celebratory hedonism of “Party People.” Escovedo finally wraps up the set by splicing his Chicano roots with modernism on his first number sung in Spanish, “Sabor a Mi,” a classic Latin pop song from 1959 that has also been recorded by Vicki Carr, Luis Miguel, Los Lobos and many others.

As with his previous two albums, Escovedo collaborated with Chuck Prophet on most of the songs on Big Station . Likewise, it’s his third outing produced by Tony Visconti, known for his work with David Bowie, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy and many others. “He’s like a member of the band by now,” Escovedo says of Visconti, who shares songwriting credit on two numbers. The album was recorded in Austin with his group The Sensitive Boys at its core alongside his backing singers Karla Manzur and Gina Holton, whose vocal accents, enhancements and harmonies weave spells throughout the disc.

“I love this record,” enthuses Escovedo, who points out that, in contrast to his many earlier inward looking songs, this time his view is primarily outward. After the stripped down guitar-driven attack on his previous album Street Songs of Love , with Big Station, “I wanted it to be about the words, vibe and atmosphere. Chuck and I went into this knowing we wanted to work with rhythm in a way I never had before.” The key to doing so in the writing stage was a Roland TR-808 drum machine popular with hip-hop, R&B, house and electronic dance music artists and producers. “We’d find real deep simple grooves. He’d get on bass, I’d get on guitar and we’d jump around making fools of ourselves. I wanted things to rock, but in the way that Bo Diddley rocked – very rhythmically.”

At the same time, Escovedo drew from the AM and FM radio music of his youth, the late ‘60s/early ‘70s Brit-rock that has long been a touchstone for him, and the early years of punk and new wave, when he first began performing music. Artists such as New York late-‘70s art-punk duo Suicide, Joe Strummer and his post-Clash band The Mescaleros, Mink DeVille and Algerian singer and activist Rachid Taha provided some of the musical strain that fed into the process as Escovedo wrote the album’s songs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Austin. And what he created reflects as much where he is going as where he has been and its impact on him. “I envision the Big Station as being about where we come from and where we end up,” he says. “If you listen to the album all the way through it will take you from one place to another.”

Escovedo’s solo recording career began in 1992 with Gravity , hailed in its very first review by the Austin Chronicle as “a near perfect album of stunning originality… some of the greatest music to be found anywhere and anytime.” Such consistent unstinting praise has marked every release that followed through to Street Songs of Love , described as "ageless rock’n’roll” by the Washington Post and “required listening” by the New York Post . It’s no wonder that veteran Rolling Stone critic David Fricke pondered some years ago: “What does it take to make this man a star?”

But stardom has never been the motivation or the goal for Escovedo, who has relentlessly followed the spirit of his muse and his love for the music in a creative and personal journey marked by struggle, trials, rebound and triumph. He was raised in Southern California in a very musical family with a father who played in mariachi bands and older brothers Coke and Pete making their mark as noted percussionists in such pioneering Latin rock groups as Santana and Azteca.

In his teens Alejandro was a devoted surfer by day who spent many of his nights going to rock’n’roll concerts. “I went to every show, bought every record, read everything I could,” he recalls. It wasn’t until he was in college in San Francisco that he started playing guitar and formed a group with some friends for a student film he was making about “the worst rock’n’roll band in the world.”

They became The Nuns, a seminal act in the burgeoning San Francisco punk scene who opened for The Sex Pistols on the final date of their ill-fated 1978 U.S. tour at Winterland. He went on to play guitar in Rank and File, whose post-punk rocking twang presaged the rise of Americana and alt-country a decade or so later. The band eventually landed in Austin, Texas, where Escovedo started a hard-charging roots rock group, The True Believers, with his younger brother Javier and singer, songwriter and guitarist Jon Dee Graham. The group’s ill-starred run saw them debut with a well received album on EMI Records only to be dropped from the label on the eve of the release of their follow-up (both were later issued in 1994 on CD by Rykodisc in one package titled Hard Road ).

On Gravity Escovedo fashioned a stunningly high standard of open ended, all embracing musicality and literate, heartfelt lyricism, and has continued to enhance and expand it over the nine studio albums that followed prior to Big Station . Some have explored themes both implicit and explicit like the end of a marriage and his estranged wife’s suicide (1994’s Thirteen Years ), life and mortality ( The Boxing Mirror in 2006, which followed a near fatal bout of illness from the effects of Hepatitis C four years earlier), and his personal and musical autobiography (2008’s Real Animal ). His 2002 release By the Hand of the Father recounted the struggles of first generation Mexican-American men like his father in songs written for a theatre work inspired by his music that premiered and played in Los Angeles to high acclaim and toured North America.

Throughout it all Escovedo has suffused his songs with his hard-won personal experience, an enduring spirit of positivity, potential and faith, an intertwined mix of mature wisdom and perpetually youthful spirit, and a panorama of inspirations gleaned from his lifelong devotion to rock’n’roll and a spectrum of related popular music styles. The result is a formidable legacy matched by a continually restless quest to draw in new and different dimensions and follow avenues of expression he has yet to explore. Even though Escovedo has earned just about any and every critical superlative possible over the previous two decades, he is never content to rest upon his laurels.

Big Station is informed by the feelings evoked “when you survive and come up, like when you’re surfing and you get your butt kicked by a wave and nearly drown,” he explains. “When you surface you’re just exhilarated, and the sun and the water and everything are so beautiful. And scary. You feel wired and powerful, like ‘I can do anything now.’ It’s that power that I feel now in my music, and for the first time in my life I feel so comfortable with myself and my songs and making records.

“With every record you gain confidence and I’ve made a lot of them,” says Escovedo. In both his life and creative pursuits, “I’m more relaxed, and not so anxious to beat on people’s doors. I’m still searching, still dodging bullets. And my music is still mutating, which is the cool thing about it.”

“It’s been quite a movie,” reflects Escovedo on his past and where it has brought him to now. Along the way he has been guided by two principles. “My father taught me that if you’re consistent and present yourself in a good way and work hard hard hard, eventually people will notice without you having to make a big bang.”

Ultimately he has continued to creatively thrive by following a basic guiding precept passed to him by his older brothers: “If it’s all about the music then let it be about the music,” insists Escovedo. By doing so he has served his music well while it has at the same time carried and comforted him through life’s turns and travails. As a result his listeners reap a bounty of all but incomparable richness, depth and emotional impact from a truly great American musical artist.

The big gigs: 10 best concerts to see in the twin cities this week, thursday, april 25.

1. Cornbread Harris' 97th Birthday: Since his Rock & Roll Hall of Famer son Jimmy Jam joined him at his birthday party last year, Samuel "Cornbread" Harris has enjoyed quite a year — from seeing his face splashed on the side of buildings in downtown Minneapolis courtesy the Hennepin Theater Trust to hearing there's a biography on him coming to bookstores in August from U of M Press and author Andrea Swensson. He's continued gigging like a madman, too, including his weekly Sunday afternoon sets at one of the rare bars in town older than him, Palmer's. Lots of light will be emanating at this birthday party beyong the 97 candles. (7 p.m. Hook & Ladder Theater, 3010 Minnehaha Av. S., Mpls., $15-$25, thehookmpls.com )

2. Rachael Kilgour: Bring your hankies as the Duluth folk music mainstay celebrates the release of her latest album , "My Father Loved Me." The album is a deeply inspired tribute to her recently deceased dad, who comes off like a hard-working, blue-collar son of a farmer who put in even more work loving his family in such heart-string-picking tracks as "How I Was Made" and the Great Lakes-tinged "Ontario." Juno Award winner Rose Cousins produced the all-acoustic collection, which furthers Kilgour's knack for writing rich everywoman tales with a Victoria Williams-style poetic familiarity and some unexpected humor, too. (7 p.m. Icehouse, 2528 Nicollet Av. S., Mpls., $12-$22, icehousempls.com )

3. Minnesota Sinfonia: The orchestra will cease operations this fall, so seize the day and enjoy one of the closing concerts of its "winter season." The featured soloist is a very fine Boston-based violinist, Yevgeny Kutik, who will solo on perhaps the quintessential example of German romanticism, Max Bruch's First Violin Concerto. Founder and music director Jay Fishman also will conduct a work of his own, as well as an Antonín Dvořák "Slavonic Dance" and Mozart's "Linz" Symphony. (7 p.m. Metro State University, 700 E. 7th St., St. Paul; 2 p.m. Sat. Basilica of St. Mary, 1600 Hennepin Av., Mpls., free, mnsinfonia.org )

4. Daniel Hope: When the concert world shut down during COVID-19, this brilliant violinist brought music to millions via his "Hope@Home" online concerts. His whirlwind Schubert Club mini-residency features two French-flavored International Artist Series recitals with pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips (7:30 p.m. Thu., 10:30 a.m. Fri. Ordway Concert Hall, 345 Washington St., St. Paul), two kid-friendly FamilyJams (10 and 11:15 a.m. Sat. Schubert Club Museum, Landmark Center, 75 W. 5thFifth St., St. Paul) and baroque music with his six-piece chamber group, the AIR Ensemble (3 p.m. Luminary Arts Center, 700 1st St. N., Mpls.). (Free-$75, schubert.org )

Also: With eight No. 1 country songs in his catalog, Tennessee singer Dustin Lynch is touting his latest, "Chevrolet" — a repurposing of Dobie Gray's 1973 classic "Drift Away" featuring the red-hot Jelly Roll — from his sixth LP, "Killed the Cowboy" (8 p.m. Armory, $41 and up); fresh off releasing his "Summit Avenue Swingers Party" live album, inspired by house shows, Jeremy Messersmith heads up the Current's Minnesota Music Month celebration with Makr an Eris (producer Makr + Sophia Eris) and Now, Now's KC Rae (8 p.m. Fitzgerald Theater, $20); Brett Young, who has scored six No. 1 Nashville tunes including "In Case You Didn't Know," is promoting his fourth album, last year's "Across the Sheets" (8 p.m. Mystic Lake Casino Showroom, $49-$129); revived U.K. fuzz-rock band Panchiko is touring after its '90s music was unearthed when a CD-R was found in a thrift shop (7 p.m. Varsity Theater, $44); local punk vet Christy Costello plays an all-ages show to tout her new album, "From the Dark," with Con Shoal and Hutchie (6 p.m. Cloudland Theater, $12-$15).

Friday, April 26

5. Sierra Ferrell: There was something of a no-duh reaction when this West Virginian twanger won the emerging artist award at last year's Americana Music Awards. She sings like Dolly Parton, writes like she's one of the o.g.'s of outlaw country, and her albums are rife with authentic bluegrass, gypsy twang and traditional folk influences, including her latest and best yet, "Trail of Flowers." Her current run of club gigs precedes big summer gigs with Zach Bryan and the Avett Brothers, plus a set at Wisconsin's Blue Ox Music Fest in late June. (9 p.m. First Avenue, 701 1st Av. N., Mpls., resale tickets only, axs.com )

Also: After earning lots of raves for their Entry show last year, Canadian throwback power-pop rockers Daniel Romano's Outfit are back in a bigger room touting a new album, "Too Hot to Sleep" (9 p.m. Turf Club, $21); singer Doreen Shaffer is the only original member of Jamaica's enduring ska band, the Skatalites, who are celebrating their 60th anniversary (8 p.m. Parkway Theater, $30-60); St. Paul's visionary R&B/neo-soul singer PaviElle is presenting her "Sovereign Suites" concert with Queen Drea, Ted Godbout, Tiyo Siyolo and more (9 p.m. Icehouse, $15-$25); back permanently from Los Angeles, Barbara Cohen has reassembled Little Lizard (7:30 p.m., also Sat., Open Eye Theater, $25-$30); Indian Music Society of MN presents violinist Ambi Subramaniam and vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty (7:30 p.m. Fitzgerald Theater, $33 and up); Steve Cole Super Band features the University of St. Thomas sax man as jazzy bandleader as well as an all-star local cast including Brandon Commodore on drums, Jeff Bailey on bass and Kavyesh Kaviraj on keyboards (6:30 & 8:30 p.m. the Dakota, $25-$35); local pop-rocker Landon Conrath , whose Ber collaboration "Funeral Home," heads up a homecoming party after touring to both coasts (8:30 p.m. Fine Line, $20-$40); San Francisco's psychedelic indie-rocker Glenn Donaldson settles in for a two-night Twin Cities stand with his band the Reds, Pinks & Purples (7 p.m., also Sat., Cloudland Theater, $18); beatbox and rap maestro Carnage the Executioner hosts his Collaborative 4th Fridays improv music series (8 p.m. White Squirrel Bar, free); the annual Ben's Birthday FoodShelf Drive will feature jammers Kung-Fu Hippies, Lolo's Ghost and Tom Freund (8 p.m. Hook & Ladder, $16-$22).

Saturday, April 27

6. Nicki Minaj: Last year's soundtrack megahit "Barbie World" with Ice Spice put an exclamation point on the fact that Minaj has had one of the most enduring careers in hip-hop — going back to when Lil Wayne's Young Money label released her 2010 debut album, "Pink Friday," with interim hits including "Super Freaky Girl," "Anaconda" and "MotorSport." The bawdy, Trinidad-born rapper hasn't cashed in accordingly as a live performer until now, though. Her first major arena headlining tour is reportedly a dazzling display of kaleidoscopic color. Word of warning: Her start times at many of the shows have also apparently kept fans waiting. (8 p.m. Target Center, 600 S. 1st St., Mpls., $80-$650, ticketmaster.com )

7. Alejandro Escovedo: Forty-six years after his first band the Nuns opened the Sex Pistols' notorious you've-been-cheated concert at the Winterland in San Francisco, the Tex-Mex music hero is sounding like a punk rocker again on his wild new album, "Echo Dancing." He might test the Dakota's sound system this time around. In the interim, of course, Sheila E's uncle has waved the many flags of Texas music, from rowdy alt-twang to elegant Mexican folk, landing him such honors as an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction and No Depression magazine's artist of the decade for the 1990s. Veteran sideman and producer James Mastro opens. (7 p.m. the Dakota, 1010 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., $50-$60, dakotacooks.com )

Also: Three-time Grammy winner Larry Campbell , a former Bob Dylan sideman who has recorded with everyone from Paul Simon to Shania Twain, is touring with his wife, singer Teresa Williams , touting their new "All This Time," another fine collection of Americana featuring the Delaney & Bonnie-evoking "Desert Island Dreams" (8 p.m. Parkway Theater, $35-$40); Goo Goo Dolls bring "Name," "Iris" and other rock faves to the PACER Center benefit (8 p.m. Minneapolis Convention Center, $100); members of Poliça and Marijuana Deathsquads will be experimenting together for the Totally Gross National Product Night at Berlin jazz club (8 p.m., $10); local vocal powerhouse Thomasina Petrus joins the Selby Avenue Brass Band for a New Orleans-flavored program (4:30 p.m. Crooners, $25-$35); Ryan Olcott steps out again with the new lineup of his reverberating band 12 Rods (8 p.m. Fine Line, $28-$50).

Sunday, April 28

8. Fred Armisen: It's billed as "Comedy for Musicians (But Everyone is Welcome)," guaranteeing a mix of comedy and music. Armisen, the sometimes drummer on Seth Meyers' late-night talk show, muses about music, plays a few different instruments, does song parodies, riffs on his "Portlandia" days and "Saturday Night Live" nights and maybe he'll do his Prince impression since this gig is in Minneapolis. Armisen's musical knowledge is deep and wide to the point where he invariably hits a funny bone in many contexts. (7 p.m. Fillmore, Mpls., $61 and up, ticketmaster.com)

Also: Settle in for groovy vibes and fun instrumental jams for the eponymous album-release party by the Neighborhood Quartet , featuring New Standards vibraphonist Steve Roehm and other ace sidemen Nick Salisbury, Dan Schartz and Greg Schutte, with Dylan Hicks & Small Screens opening (7 p.m. Parkway Theater, $20); Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials , who were inducted into the Blues Foundation's Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis this year, bring their house rockin' Chicago blues to downtown Minneapolis (7 p.m. the Dakota, $30-$35); two different branches of the North Mississippi blues family tree are intertwined in the Burnside Kimbrough Experience (7 p.m. Hook & Ladder, $25); bassist Liz Draper is back at Berlin for another instrumental set with Bryan Murray and Mike Vasich (7 p.m., free); and if you can't make Cornbread Harris ' 97th birthday on Thursday, he's doing his usual Sunday afternoon set this week, too (5-7 p.m. Palmer's Bar, free).

Monday, April 29

9. Judy Collins: Last fall at the Parkway Theater, the legendary singer proved that she still has the voice, the wit and the charm. She sampled a few songs from 2022′s "Spellbound," her first album of all original material among her 55 records, and, of course, did her hits "Send in the Clouds" and "Both Sides Now." The American musical treasure returns to the intimacy of the Dakota for two nights. (7 p.m., also Tue., the Dakota, 1010 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., $85-$125, dakotacooks.com)

Tuesday, April 30

Land of Talk finds Montreal indie rocker Lizzie Powell shifting from piano-based to guitar-driven tunes on the new "Performances" (8 p.m. Icehouse, $27.69); Texas' psychedelic noise-punk trio Cherubs , who've recorded for the both the Amphetamine Reptile and Butthole Surfers-affiliated Trance Syndicate record labels, top off a wild bill feature local faves Citric Dummies and Murf (8 p.m. Turf Club, $15-$20).

Wednesday, May 1

10. David Foster and Katharine McPhee: Known as the Hitman, super-producer/songwriter Foster has earned 16 Grammys working with the likes of Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and Michael Buble. The king of over-the-top pop, he's touring with his wife, the "American Idol" runner-up and star of TV's "Smash." Expect a combination of his hits and her favorites from TV as well as Broadway's "Waitress" in which she did a stint. (7:30 p.m. State Theatre, 805 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $60-$100, ticketmaster.com)

Also: Kathy Mattea , known for the country hits "Where've You Been" and "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" and hosting West Virginia's nationally-distributed public radio show "Mountain Stage," returns to the hometown of her songwriter husband, Jon Vezner (6:30 & 8:30 p.m. the Dakota, $30-$40); the Cedar Cultural Center's Nordic Roots series brings Scandinavian folk trio Northern Resonance to town (7:30 p.m., $25-$30); rootsy Ontario indie-rock band the Strumbellas are back out with a new album, "Part Time Believer" (8 p.m. Fine Line, $25-$45); Southside Aces clarinetist Tony Balluff leads the instrumental trio the Pick-a-Rib Three (7-10 p.m. Berlin, free).

Classical critic Rob Hubbard contributed to this column.

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

Jon Bream has been a music critic at the Star Tribune since 1975, making him the longest tenured pop critic at a U.S. daily newspaper. He has attended more than 8,000 concerts and written four books (on Prince, Led Zeppelin, Neil Diamond and Bob Dylan). Thus far, he has ignored readers’ suggestions that he take a music-appreciation class.

soloists, soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha* and pianist Michelle Cann.* In an

evening of American music, the orchestra opens with Aaron Copland’s beloved classic

Appalachian Spring followed by James P. Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz

piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the

spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South,

Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary

of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut.

● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the

CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly

monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate.

● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate

two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.

● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for

● July 25 – Mendelssohn's hit violin concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich^, is in the

vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis*

(The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with

all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts.

● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang

Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music

tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as

princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra.

● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
