Add in the lottery system that some airlines like to play with bassinets for infants and just the thought of boarding a plane can be pretty stressful.

A bassinet (sometimes referred to as a sky cot) is a small bed that can be attached to the plane, often the bulkhead wall , in front of a passenger seat.

Depending on the airline and aircraft there may be different styles and sizes, as well as varying weight, length, and age limitations.

For example, American Airlines has a basket-style bassinet that closes with a zipper. Meanwhile, British Airways offers more of a baby bouncy seat style that can be mounted on a flat surface in business class.

Are Airline Bassinets Safe?

The most important thing about traveling with family is that everyone arrives safely. With little ones in tow that are especially vulnerable to turbulence, we want to make sure that everyone is strapped in properly!

Without a doubt, the safest place for a baby to sit on an airplane is in their own seat in an FAA-approved car seat . 

However, bassinets are an excellent option for parents traveling with their young child who is under 2 years old and doesn’t have their own seat. That is, if they still fit in the bassinet.

Although your child may still technically qualify as a “ lap child ” because they are not yet 2, that doesn’t mean they will be comfortable staying on your lap for the entire flight.

Instead of passing them back and forth between adults, or even making a little bed for them on the floor (please don’t do this!), securing your child in a bassinet will allow everyone to get some rest, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

However, babies are not allowed to be in the bassinet during takeoff, landing, or during periods of turbulence. These devices are made for convenience, not necessarily for safety.

There is no standardized airplane bassinet, so options may vary from 1 airline to the next.

In general, bassinets are quite small and cozy and best accommodate babies from the newborn stage up to 1 year old, depending on the size of the child.

In our research, we have seen age limits stated on airline websites from 0 to 18 months with a maximum weight anywhere from 15 to 25 pounds. That said, it will all depend on the child — most importantly their height and length when laying down.

While you may not always have the luxury of choosing between bringing your child’s car seat or relying on the airline’s bassinet, this is a good question to ask — car seat or bassinet?

One of the few benefits of flying with a small child under the age of 2 is that they aren’t charged for domestic flights and often are charged only 10% of the fare on international flights when sharing a seat with an adult.

So, when contemplating whether or not to bring a car seat, you are really debating whether or not you want to (or can) pay for an additional seat that your child may not use.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) strongly urges parents to use a child restraint system (CRS) for the duration of the flight. Bassinets cannot be used during turbulence, and the FAA states that “your arms aren’t capable of holding your child securely, especially during unexpected turbulence.”

If you can afford it, the right decision is always to  purchase an additional seat for your baby and bring their FAA-approved car seat that they are used to traveling in. They will be safer and more comfortable. You also won’t have to deal with taking them in and out of the bassinet during takeoff, landing, and turbulence.

That is assuming that your baby doesn’t need to be breastfed, or cuddled, and will stay perfectly calm without being on your lap! Ha!

Aeroflot offers bassinets for children under 1 year of age with a maximum weight of 24 pounds (11 kg). The number of bassinets per flight depends on the type of aircraft.

When using a bassinet on Aeroflot, crew members will check your child’s weight and instruct you on how to use the bassinet during flight, as well as show you where the changing tables are in the lavatory.

To reserve a bassinet on Aeroflot, you much notify the airline at least 36 hours before the scheduled departure time by contacting either the sales office or the Contact Center for priority access to these seats.

Aeromexico provides a limited number of cribs per flight and they are available upon request during the check-in process (subject to availability).

Cribs are limited to infants weighing no more than 24 pounds (11 kg) and the adult will need to be seating in an AM Plus seat to receive the crib service (additional charges may apply).

Air Canada offers bassinets onboard its 767-300ER (763), 777-200LR (77L), 777-300ER (77W), 787-9 (789), 787-8 (788), and A330 (333) aircraft.

Bassinets can only accommodate infants weighing less than 25 pounds (11 kg) who are unable to sit upright. They are installed at bulkhead rows where armrests do not lift.

The bassinets can be requested in advance, but are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and subject to availability at the time of flight departure.

Hot Tip: Check to see what kind of plane you’re flying on before you check your airline’s bassinet policy.

Air France passengers flying economy, premium economy, or business can request a bassinet on long-haul flights . Requests should be made as soon as possible after booking and at least 48 hours before your departure, subject to availability.

Bassinets are designed for infants weighing less than 22 pounds (10 kg) and measuring less than 27 inches (70 cm).

If you would like your infant (under 2 years old) to travel in an individual seat, you must install them in an approved  car seat or harness .

Air India’s website is vague about what it offers for children, but it does appear that bassinets can be requested free of charge .

According to SeatGuru , you can request a bassinet by contacting Air India reservations before your flight.

Air Mauritius offers infant cots on all international flights. Cots are limited, but requests can be made in advance and can be confirmed at the time of check-in.

The baby cots can accommodate infants up to 12 months old , up to 24 pounds (11 kg), and up to 29 inches (74 cm) tall.

Since the baby cots need to be stowed at takeoff and landing, Air Mauritius gives you a special seat belt extension to carry your infant safely in your lap at such times.

Bassinets are available on many Air New Zealand flights and can be attached to the front wall of the economy cabin. Availability is limited, so reservations are suggested.

You can book your bassinet ahead of time online with Seat Select — just choose a seat that has a bassinet icon. Note there may be an additional charge for these seats.

Baby bassinets may be requested on Air Seychelles for infants up to 6 months of age and not weighing more than 25 pounds (11 kg).

Bassinets are subject to availability and requests should be made at the time of reservation.

Air Transat offers bassinets at bulkhead seats only for infants who can not yet sit upright and have a maximum weight of 24 pounds (11 kg). Availability is limited.

The bassinets measure 27 x 12 x 6 inches (68 x 30 x 15 cm).

Alaska Air does not offer bassinets to its passengers and there is a limit to the number of lap children per flight depending on the aircraft.

Lap infants are not guaranteed a seat, but if there is an empty seat available on a flight, the infant may occupy that seat for no extra charge .

ANA (All Nippon Airways)

ANA offers bassinets on all international aircraft for infants not occupying a seat in economy and business class. Bassinets are not offered in first class.

Each bassinet is approximately 33 x 18 x 13 inches ( 85 x 45 x 33 cm) and can hold an infant up to  22 pounds  (10 kg).  Passengers who have requested a bassinet will also receive a special baby blanket .

Bassinets are limited but can be requested by telephone.

Asiana Airlines

Asiana Airlines allows bassinets to be reserved in advance. Supply is limited, so the airline recommends reserving a bassinet as soon as possible.

Size limitations will vary depending on the cabin and aircraft:

• A380, A350, B777: height of 28 inches (71 cm) or below + weight of less than 22 pounds (10 kg)
• B747, A330, B767, A321: height of 30 inches (76 cm) or below + weight of less than 30 pounds (14 kg)
• A350: height of 28 inches (71 cm) or below + weight of less than 30 pounds (14 kg)
• All aircraft (except A350): height of 30 inches (76 cm) or below + weight of less than 3o pounds (14 kg)

A vianca Airlines

Avianca Airlines offers bassinets on all routes operated by the A330 and B787 for infants 12 months old or less who weigh less than 25 pounds (11 kg) and are less than 29 inches (74 cm) tall.

Each bassinet is approximately 29.5 x 13.4 x 8.8 inches (75 x 34 x 22 cm).

British Airways

British Airways offers carrycots for infants up to 2 years old on all long-haul flights . Short-haul flights do not offer this service.

Carrycots can be reserved by selecting the appropriate seat during the booking process. The carrycot seat positions are marked on the seat maps with a baby icon .

Carrycots are supplied free of charge but are subject to availability onboard the aircraft on the day of the flight . They are given to the people sitting in the carrycot and child seat positions on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific offers bassinets on all flights. You can request a baby bassinet when you make your reservation.

The Cathay Pacific bassinet is designed for infants under 6 months old and has a maximum carrying weight of 26.5 pounds (12 kg).

The measurements of the bassinet are 30 x 15 x 8 inches (76 x 38 x 20 cm).

China Airlines

China Airlines offers a limited number of bassinets on all of its flights except for flights operated by the ERJ aircraft.

Passengers are encouraged to request a bassinet when they book an infant ticket, as only a limited number of bassinets and bulkhead seats are available onboard and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Since the size of the bassinet is limited, the bassinet service is only offered to infants under 6 months old  with a maximum height of up to 28 inches (71 cm) and a weight of up to 24 pounds (11 kg).

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers Infant Bassinet Service (BSCT) in its economy and premium economy classes on flights operated by B777, B787, A330, A350, and A380 aircraft with a duration of more than 3 hours .

Bassinets can be used by infants less than 1 year old  on the day of travel who do not weigh more than 25 pounds (11 kg) and are less than 27.5 inches (70 cm) tall.

Since there is a limited number of bassinets provided for each aircraft, we recommend requesting a bassinet via the website , by calling +86-20-22395539, or by visiting a local ticket office.

Condor offers a limited number of bassinets for infants traveling in business class on long-haul flights .

Bassinets are designed for infants up to 6 months with a maximum weight of 17.5 pounds (8 kg).

Reserve a bassinet by calling Special Reservations at +49(0)6171 6988978 Monday through Friday no later than 48 hours before departure.

Czech Airlines

Czech Airlines offers a baby cot onboard select flights. You can find bassinets when flying economy class onboard an A330 or in business class when flying on an A319 or A330.

The baby cot has a weight limit of 24 pounds (11 kg) and measures 29.5 x 13 x 8.6 inches (75 x 34 x22 cm).

You can request the cot via the Contact Centre during your seat booking.

Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines offer onboard bassinets, also known as SkyCots , free of charge for passengers in select seats on equipped aircraft for some international flights.

The bassinets are ideal for babies weighing up to 20 pounds (9 kg) and up to 26 inches (66 cm) tall.

You can request SkyCots by contacting Reservations before arriving at the airport and then speaking with the gate agent at the boarding gate. Delta can’t guarantee availability due to a limit of 2 SkyCots per aircraft and weight restrictions.

EasyJet Airlines

EasyJet does not appear to offer bassinets on its planes. However, according to its website , it is otherwise very accommodating to infants and young children.

EL AL Airlines

Most El Al aircraft are equipped with bassinets for infants up to 9 months of age. The number of seats with a special apparatus for the bassinet is limited and varies according to the aircraft model. Bassinets are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are flying with an infant, you should request a bulkhead seat with a small bassinet by contacting Reservations.

After takeoff, the bassinet is installed and you will receive a blanket for the baby. According to the EL AL website, the crew is at your service for heating baby bottles and will also rinse the bottle and provide hot water. Diapering stands are available in the plane’s bathroom stalls.

Emirates offers bassinets for children up to 2 years old as long as they don’t have their own seat on a child’s fare.

Bassinets are limited but can be requested at the time of reservation or after a reservation has been made by utilizing the Manage a Booking feature online.

Etihad’s bassinets are first come, first served and can be requested during the booking process or after via the Manage my booking  section of the website.

Bassinets are designed to accommodate babies weighing up to 24 pounds (11 kg). The cabin crew will confirm that the infant fits comfortably and safely in the bassinet before attaching it to your seat.

Bassinets are available aboard all EVA Air aircraft, but for safety reasons, height and weight limitations apply .

EVA Air requests to be advised of your baby’s date of birth, height, and weight when you make your reservation.

Frontier does not currently offer bassinets on its flights.

Garuda Indonesia offers baby bassinets on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost. Since bassinets are limited, the airline asks parents to request them as far in advance as possible.

Confirmation of the request is only given at check-in .

The maximum weight for infants in Garuda Indonesia bassinets is 20 pounds (9 kg).

Gulf Air offers bassinets on all flights except in its Falcon Gold cabin on its new B787 and in its economy cabin on the A320.

You can request a bassinet and receive confirmation in advance , which is uncommon but very welcome!

The bassinets are designed for infants up to 7 months old who weigh no more than 22 pounds (10 kg) and are no taller than 26 inches (66 cm).

JetBlue is one of the more family-friendly airlines in the U.S. Unfortunately, it does not offer bassinets on its flights.

Hawaiian Airlines offers bassinets that you can reserve in advance for bassinet-compatible Extra Comfort seats (row 14) on select A330 routes.

The bassinet is 32 x 14.5 x 7 inches (81 x 37 x 18 cm) and can accommodate an infant up to 20 pounds (9 kg).

To reserve the seat in advance, you may buy a bassinet-compatible Extra Comfort seat online and reserve the bassinet over the phone. Alternatively, you can call Hawaiian Airlines Reservations to reserve directly.

If you’d prefer not to purchase an Extra Comfort seat, you may see an airport customer service agent at check-in (on the day of departure) for bassinet availability. If the Extra Comfort upgrade is provided as a courtesy, only 1 adult is eligible for the upgrade. You can make up to 2 requests per flight. Confirmed bassinets are assigned during the boarding process. Priority is given to the customer with the earliest check-in time. Note that bassinets are not guaranteed if requested upon check-in.

Iberia offers cots for infants on intercontinental flights if the parents are in the correct class and seat (which is not listed on its website).

To book a cot, you will need to contact your local Iberia office and provide them with your flight information to find out if your seat is compatible. Depending on the cabin class, booking a seat may incur an additional cost.

The cots that Iberia uses are designed for infants who weigh up to 24 pounds (11 kg).

Icelandair does not currently offer bassinets on its flights.

JAL offers bassinets, but they are limited and reservations are not always possible.

The bassinets are designed for infants up to the age of 2 weighing up to 23 pounds (10.5 kg).

The dimensions of the bassinet are 28 x 12 x 6 inches (72 x 30 x 15 cm).

KLM offers carrycots onboard intercontinental flights but requests are not guaranteed.

You can request one via the My Trip section of its website or by contacting the KLM Customer Care Center .

The cots are suitable for babies who are no taller than 25.5 inches  (65 cm) and weigh no more than 22 pounds  (10 kg) on the day of the trip.

Korean Air offers bassinets that you can reserve in advance on international flights only in economy class and Prestige class on some aircraft.

Request a bassinet through the Korean Air Reservation Center before your flight at least 48 hours in advance due to limited availability.

The bassinets are suitable for infants weighing less than 24 pounds (11 kg) and shorter than 29.5 inches (75 cm).

LATAM Airlines offers bassinets on all routes operated by a 767, 777, or 787.

You can request a bassinet in advance, but the service is subject to availability on each flight.

Only babies weighing up to 22 pounds (10 kg) and up to 28 inches (71 cm) tall can travel in the bassinet.

Lufthansa offers bassinets on its entire long-haul fleet that can be reserved up to 52 hours before flight departure. Depending on your booking class, a seat reservation fee for the seat with the bassinet may apply.

The bassinets are designed for babies under 24 pounds (11 kg) in weight and under 26 inches (67 cm) in length.

Malaysia Airlines offers bassinets on select aircraft free of charge.

The bassinet service must be requested at least 24 hours before departure through its Global Customer Contact Centre .

MIAT offers bassinets on some of its flights, but requests can only be made at the time of check-in at the airport .

To use the bassinet, your baby must not weigh more than 24 pounds (11 kg) and not be taller than 29.5 inches (75 cm).

Porter Airlines is a very family-friendly airline. However, it does not offer bassinets on its flights.

Primera Air does not offer bassinets on its flights.

Qantas offers bassinets for infants that can be requested at the time of booking.

Bassinets on Qantas flights are approximately 28 x 12 x 10 inches (71 x 31 x 26 cm) and have a weight limitation of 24 pounds (11 kg).

Qatar Airways provides bassinets for infants and babies up to 24 months old . They can be requested by contacting your nearest Qatar Airways office .

Bassinets are not available in the first class cabin on board the A380. To check the availability of a bassinet position seat on a specific aircraft and within a particular cabin, you will need to contact Reservations.

The maximum body weight of the infant should not exceed 24 pounds (11 kg) and the age must not exceed 2 years . Additionally, the infant must fit within the confines of the baby bassinet.

Ryanair does not offer bassinets on its flights.

Singapore Airlines offers bassinets when you book an infant ticket. However, there is only a limited number of bassinets available onboard and they are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Each bassinet measures 30 x 12 x 6 inches (76 x 30 x 15 cm) and can support a maximum weight of 30 pounds (14 kg).

South African Airways offers bassinets for its smallest passengers whose parents are sitting in a bulkhead seat. These can be reserved by calling the nearest SAA office .

The use of a baby bassinet is restricted by the infant’s size and weight. Infants not exceeding 22 pounds (10 kg) and 29.5 inches (75 cm) are eligible for a baby bassinet, subject to availability.

Southwest is a very family-friendly airline. However, it does not offer bassinets on its flights.

SriLankan Airlines offers a limited number of bassinets on its flights. However, bassinets are subject to availability and requests need to be made at the time of booking .

Sunwing does not offer bassinets on its flights.

On SWISS, bassinets are available in all flight classes on long-haul flights and in business class on European flights.

The bassinets are approved for babies of up to 8 months of age and weighing a maximum of 24 pounds (11 kg).

The number of bassinets is limited, so please be sure to contact its Service Center in good time.

The number of seats available for cots varies from one type of aircraft to another. This information is immediate and confirmed when you book .

The bassinet dimensions are 29 x 13 x 8.8 inches (75 x 34 x 22.4 cm) and can support a baby up to 24 pounds (11 kg).

Thai Airways

Thai Airways offers bassinets that you can request at the time of booking or at check-in, but they are not guaranteed.

The bassinet is designed for babies less than 6 months of age weighing less than 22 pounds (10 kg) and not exceeding 26 inches (67 cm) in length.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines offers bassinets free of charge for babies on flights.

Bassinets can be placed in front of extra legroom seats that often come with an extra charge. To book these seats and request a bassinet, it is best to call worldwide customer service at +90 850 333 0 849.

United Airlines

United offers a limited number of complimentary bassinets on international flights only, including in Polaris business class on select 757, 767, 777, and 787 aircraft and economy on 757, 767, 777, and 787 aircraft. Bassinets are not available for customers traveling in first or business class.

Customers can request a bassinet by calling 800-864-8331 (or the appropriate Worldwide Contact Center) or at the airport free of charge. You will be provided accompanying seat assignments for an adult traveling with an infant and up to 1 travel companion.

Bassinet availability is limited and arrangements are not guaranteed, so United recommends requesting a bassinet early for your flight.

Bassinets are 29 x 11 inches (74 x 28 cm) and can hold an infant weighing 22 pounds (10 kg) or less.

Virgin Atlantic

Cots and bassinets can be requested for select aircraft and cabins onboard Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Australia Airlines

Virgin Australia offers bassinets onboard all international long-haul flights and on domestic flights operated by an A330 aircraft, subject to availability.

Bassinets are limited, so request a bassinet for your infant at the time of booking. The pre-allocation of bassinets is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bassinets are designed for use by 1 infant at a time and size and weight maximums apply, as listed below:

• 777: 40 pounds (18 kg) and 27.5 inches (70 cm)
• A330: 24 pounds (11 kg) and 27.5 inches (70 cm)

WestJet Airlines

WestJet offers bassinets on its 787 Dreamliner in the economy cabin. If you’re traveling with a lap-held infant, you can request a bassinet when you book your flight.

Check the availability of seats 9B, 9D, 9F, 9J, and 25E on the 787-9. To guarantee a bassinet, you may need to visit a WestJet counter at the airport.

The infant must be a maximum of 25 pounds (11 kg), a maximum length of 26 inches (66 cm), and unable to sit upright.

Depending on the airline that you are flying, you can (and should) reserve a bassinet. However, many airlines don’t offer that convenience and leave parents waiting until they board to find out if they are able to use a bassinet or not.

Tips for Using a Bassinet

Hopefully, you’ve found an airline that offers a bassinet, ideally with a reservation.

Now comes the hard part — getting your little one to use it! Here are some tips for using an airplane bassinet.

This probably comes as second nature to parents (and many frequent travelers), but you should make sure your seat and the bassinet are as clean as possible .

Fortunately, as parents, you will likely already have plenty of wipes with you, so just grab a few and give everything within reach a good cleaning.

If you want your little one to get some rest in the bassinet, they need to be as comfortable as possible.

We suggest bringing along a favorite blanket or 2 to recreate the smell and feel of the crib at home.

Speaking of recreating the feel of their crib, trying to recreate their routine can go a long way toward getting some well-needed rest.

If your baby is used to feeding, cuddling, listening to music, etc. before bed, try to stick to that schedule as much as possible before placing them in the bassinet.

If you are flying on an overnight flight, this might be easier to do than during a day flight, but just keep in mind that a new environment can be extra stimulating to little eyes!

This is probably number 1 on most parents’ checklists when they are flying with their baby, but making sure your baby’s favorite pacifier is onboard is crucial!

If your baby is already taking a bottle by themselves, feeding them in the bassinet may help them get comfortable.

As convenient as the bassinet is, the location can sometimes be distracting for little passengers. Often the bassinet is attached to the bulkhead, which can be subject to a lot of foot traffic, lights, and even wall-mounted TVs.

None of those distractions are helpful when your baby is trying to get some rest. Fortunately, there are products on the market, such as CoziGo , which attach to the bassinet and block out some light and sound.

Bringing along some music or white noise may go a long way to creating an environment similar to what your little one is used to at home.

If your baby likes to listen to lullabies while drifting off to sleep, download some music on your phone to play in the bassinet.

With the blankets, tent, and music, there is a good chance that the bassinet will be more comfortable than your seat (unless you are flying business or first class, of course)!

Bassinets are an excellent amenity for parents flying with an infant. But they are just that — an amenity. Not all airlines offer them and even fewer will guarantee them before the flight.

Does Etihad offer discounted fares for children?

If you want to use a car seat on board the aircraft, your baby requires a separate seat on board the plane. Infants are not provided with their own seat unless the child’s fare is purchased for them . You can bring your child’s own car seat provided it meets certain strict criteria and is approved for use on board an aircraft.

Infant Baggage Allowance

When traveling with an infant , the following additional allowance applies in any class of travel :

• Flights to/from the US and Canada (Piece Concept) – one piece of checked baggage , with a maximum weight of 23 kg (50 lbs ) and maximum total dimensions of 158 cm.
• All other Etihad flights (Weight Concept) – 10 kg of checked baggage.
• All Etihad flights:
• Cabin baggage : one extra handbag that must weigh no more than 5 kg .
• One fully collapsible stroller, carry-cot or approved car seat , as a carry-on item if cabin space is available or else as checked baggage.

When the child fare is purchased for an infant, the same baggage allowance as for adult passengers will apply for the infant, too.

At the check-in desk, luggage tags will be placed on any pushchair or stroller . You will still be able to use these within the airport up to the departure gate . On arrival at your destination, the pushchair or stroller will either be returned at the aircraft door or should be collected at the baggage carousel (this is determined by local regulations in each country).

Bassinets and Car Seats

All Etihad aircraft are fitted with baby bassinet positions . Baby bassinet positions are available on a first come, first served basis . The baby bassinets are designed to accommodate infants under 11 kg and 75 cm .

For safety reasons, bassinets can only be used once the aircraft is airborne, and the seat belt signs have been switched off. If the aircraft experiences turbulence and the seat belt sign is switched on, the infant must be removed from the bassinet and secured on your lap using the infant seat belt.

Children up to 36 months may travel in an approved car seat in conjunction with an aircraft seat provided that the appropriate child fare has been purchased . The child must be accompanied by an adult in an adjacent seat for take-off and landing.

Rearward facing seats are allowed in First or Business Class only (not allowed in Economy class due to seat pitch limitation) and can be used only for infants from 0 to 6 months weighing less than 10 kg .

As per the UAE – General Civil Aviation Authority, only car seats and child restraint devices that comply with one of the following standards/regulations are acceptable on board :

• Australian Car Seat regulations.
• The US Standards FMVSS 213.
• Canadian Standard CMVSS 213.
• European Standards ECE-44.
• German Standards (TÜV Doc.TÜV/958-01/2001).

To help children sit or sleep comfortably, most travel accessories, such as BedBox, JetKids, Fly Tot, and Plane Pal, are permitted on board subject to certain conditions . The accessory must be securely stowed during take-off and landing, and accessories that attach to any part of the seat are not permitted.

Etihad Services for Family Travel

Baby food in a range of delicious flavors is available on Etihad flights. Baby meals and children meals are available on all Etihad flights only if they have been pre-ordered at the time of booking the flight, or at least 24 hours before departure .

In Abu Dhabi and other major airports, complimentary strollers are available in the terminal, close to the gate. If you’re traveling in First or Business Class, Family Rooms at certain airport lounges offer fun ways to keep your children entertained, including books, toys, and TV, as well as a great children’s menu and qualified nannies.

When boarding begins, families with young children will be called first for pre-boarding , thus giving you some extra time to get settled on board.

In order to keep your children entertained on board, Etihad’s in-flight entertainment system includes a wide choice of television shows, movies, music, and video games .

How to Get a Lap Infant Ticket When Booking Etihad Using American Airlines Miles

My quest for answers on a lap infant quandary started with a direct message sent to Mommy Points on Instagram from a family that was scheduled to travel from India to the United States in Etihad Airways business class using American Airlines miles. Their problem? Neither Etihad nor American (the two, by the way, may be nearing a breakup) , would issue their new baby a lap infant seat, even though the couple already had fully issued tickets for themselves.

As I soon found out, this wasn't a new issue, but it was a real problem. I was repeatedly told by fellow frequent flyers that it was impossible to get an infant ticket issued on Etihad business or first ticket when redeeming American Airlines miles. That said, this wasn't a rule posted anywhere I could find.

Many points and miles enthusiasts know the friction between the ticket issuer and operating carriers on partner-airline award redemptions. (I should also note here I had read Gary Leff's recent account where it took a conference call between an American Airlines rep, a Qantas rep and himself in order to get a lap infant ticket issued for his baby to fly a Qantas first class ticket paid with American Airlines miles.)

As someone who has booked her own lap infant on several business class flights , I was up for the challenge of finding a solution to this quagmire. TPG has covered issues related to booking lap infants on partner awards and the case of Alaska Airlines requiring full redemption tickets for lap infants (ie. paying adult prices for a seat). My research led me to lots of stories of families struggling to book lap infant awards on partner airlines .

The family who reached out to TPG had ultimately given up and instead redeemed their American Airlines miles on Cathay Pacific, despite the 25% cash fare they were charged for their lap infant award on that carrier.

In order to help keep other families from being stuck in this predicament, I waded in. After three hours of phone calls with American and Etihad agents, I finally was able to book an Etihad lap infant ticket paid with cash even though the business class ticket was booked with American miles.

With what I learned, so can you.

Adding a Lap Infant to an American Airlines Partner Award

First, I booked a flight from the Maldives to Abu Dhabi in business class for 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles and $72 AUD. I then called the Australian American Airlines number because they sometimes have the best view of the Etihad upper class availability . The ticket took almost 24 hours to go from pending to ticketed. Note: When you make the initial award booking with American, the airline will give you the partner airline's confirmation code over the phone. Write this down, as you'll need when you call the partner airline to add the infant's ticket.

This is how my reservation looked on AA.com after it was ticketed. It was just me flying all alone with a misspelled last name. Note that the record locator on this ticket is American's own, not Etihad's; you must get that over the phone. (And don't worry, I'm not actually flying this ticket and it has already been canceled.)

From what I could ascertain, previously when booking on a partner airline using AAdvantage miles, American had to issue the infant seat. This created issues because, domestically, American does not have individual tickets for infants. However, I was told that the policy recently changed; now American Airlines only issues infant tickets for British Airways-operated flights when travelers are making an award booking. For other partner awards booked with American miles, the operating carrier must now book the infant ticket.

Update: The information given from American seems to not be fully correct as there are still reports of infant tickets being issued on some other partners , though not on all partners or in all cases.

The big question was: Do the operating carriers know that they may have to be the one to issue lap infant awards and are they willing to follow those procedures?

At first, the answer was certainly no. I told the Etihad agent I spoke with about the new policy that the American Airlines agent had explained to me. The Etihad agent did not know that they could create a separate ticket for my infant, but after a supervisor got involved things improved. The Etihad agent came back on to acknowledge he could issue the infant ticket for American Airlines and Virgin, thanks to a new policy that went into effect on March 14.

After 30 minutes on the phone, I was given a lap infant ticket price of $532, or 10% of the cash fare for an adult ticket. I also was told that adding the lap infant could only be done over the phone.

You can see from my original airline ticket below that it was issued with an 001 number, which is an American Airlines ticketing number. My lap infant, on the other hand, has an Etihad ticket number starting with 607. The Etihad Airways ticket shows the booking for my fake child named Peter. The infant's ticket never appeared on my American Airlines booking.

I charged the lap infant ticket and was assured that it could be canceled for free within 24 hours. When I later called back to cancel the ticket, since this was all just a test, Etihad initially tried to charge me a $25 cancellation fee. When I reminded the airline of the 24 hour cooling-off period that allows for free cancellations, however, it was processed without an issue.

Bottom Line

While this scenario may only apply to a small number of families, there's a bit of a rush to book awards on Etihad using American Airlines miles at the moment, so we are relieved that booking a lap infant now seems possible. That said, know that when you are using miles to book an award on a partner airline, adding a lap infant is not always easy, and in the case of at least Alaska miles, not always possible.

Etihad airways: family flying airline review.

We are reviewing 30 of the world’s leading international airlines for their family-friendliness.  Our reviews cover the airline’s policies and service offerings that the average family will deal with when flying standard economy class. For more details on the Globetrotters reviews and ratings referenced, please see the   lead article .

Etihad is one of the world’s youngest but most rapidly expanding international airlines, now the third-largest in the Middle East with an enormous new hub due to open in Abu Dhabi in 2019 (right on the Globetrotters doorstep!).  It excels particularly with its business and first-class passengers, winning numerous awards in these categories, but what do they have to offer for the average family flier in economy?

Etihad Pregnancy Policy

Travel is unrestricted up to 28 weeks.  From the beginning of the 29th week to the end of the 36th week expectant mothers must submit at check-in a doctor/midwife’s letter stating they are fit to fly (issued not more than 7 days before); From the 37th week you will not be accepted for travel.

In the case of a multiples pregnancy, a doctor/midwife’s letter is required between the 29 th to 32 nd week, from the 33 rd week you will not be accepted for travel.

Newborns on etihad.

The airline recommends avoiding air travel for 7 days after delivery.

Infants (under 2 years) on Etihad

Each adult can only be responsible for one infant for which they will pay an infant fare. Any additional infants or if you require the child to use their own seat, you must pay a child’s fare.  Your own child’s seat is permitted to be brought on board if it meets safety standards for children 6 months to 36 months.

A limited supply of infant meals are kept on board but they suggest to bring your own and staff can warm meals and bottles for you.

Strollers are permitted to be brought to the gate before being stowed, or you can use the free stroller service at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Etihad Baby Bassinets

Infant bassinets are designed to hold babies below 10 months or 10kg.  You must pre-book these as they are given out on a first-come basis so book early (note you cannot book these seats online, if you try to call and book they will tell you they can only note it on their systems and the bulkhead seats will be allocated once you arrive at the airport).

Children (2-11 years) on Etihad

For children aged 3 to 12 (don’t worry, they’ll give them to the younger ones too!) there are kids packs available themed around the airline’s mascots Zoe, Jamool, Kundai and Boo. In addition, they have an extensive in-flight entertainment menu “The Kids Club” with around 30-60 games (depending on the aircraft), TV shows, movies and music suited to the junior audience. Parents can block any content they find inappropriate.

Kids meals must be ordered 24 hours in advance and will be served in priority in brightly coloured packs, in keeping with the airlines Kids Club theme and mascots.

Children under five must be travelling with a person over 18 years old and pay a child’s fare, approximately 75% of the adult fare.

Pre-flight when leaving from Abu Dhabi there are a few children’s entertainment options available. For those able to access Etihad lounges, Family Rooms are available with qualified nannies supervising so children may be left to play.

In the main Abu Dhabi Airport Terminal 3  (near gate 32) there is also a free children’s play area suitable to those under 6 years old and breastfeeding and baby change facilities.

Etihad Flying Nanny 

Etihad’s unique selling point for families is their  “Flying Nanny” service.  They are the first to come out with such a bold statement of their family-friendliness but don’t get too over-excited, it is not a stop-and-drop service at the back of the plane!

According to their marketing materials, the job of the flying nanny is to “help children get settled, keep them entertained or offer support and advice to parents” .  The Nanny’s training is approved by renowned UK nanny college Norland.

Now this all looks good on paper, but I guess it really depends on your flight route and staff member on any given day, as well as how many other families are on board for what sort of service you will get – see our personal experience from more than a dozen flights in the Globetrotters Review below.

Note this is not a service that you book, it is part of the standard service now on all long-haul flights. The Flying Nanny should introduce herself at the start of the flight to any families on board, you will identify her from the orange apron. The Flying Nanny’s activities with the children (supposedly) include arts and crafts, hand puppets, drawing competitions, face painting and magic tricks.

Sleeping devices on Etihad

For those interested in using infant sleep products such as the Bed Box or pillow products like the Fly Tot or Kooshy Kushion to improve sleeping comfort, they ARE allowed on Etihad at the time of writing, in both business and economy cabins.  Staff direct the restriction of their use although Etihad has no specific published policy on this, unlike Emirates and Qantas who have specifically banned their use in cabin.

Unaccompanied Minors

Children between 5 years old but younger than 12 years old may travel as UM’s. Children’s between 12 years old but under 16 years old may travel alone but parents can request the UM service.

Where the UM service is used the child must pay for a full adult fare.   Fares can be booked online but you must then print and complete a UM form and submit back to your local booking office or head office UM email, the airline will contact you within 24 hours to confirm information is correct.

If flights are operated by a codeshare partner you will need to check age limits and conditions directly with that carrier.

Etihad Baggage Allowances

From 31 January 2018, there were significant changes made in airline allowances.  Your allowances within economy will depend on what type of economy ticket you have purchased – Deal, Saver, Classic or Flex.   It is best that you check the airline’s baggage policy directly before you fly .

As a general rule, depending on ticket type you will get 23kg, 30kg or 35kg for both adults and a child tickets.

Exceptions are routes to the Americas, adults and children may take up to 2 bags of 23kg each (Brazil 32kgs) and infants one bag of 23kg – other tickets classes and route deals may apply.

Infants are allowed 1 bag up to 10kg.   (Additional limits for stowed infant equipment is not specified but we have never had a problem with addition strollers, car seats, carry-cots – this could be because we fly as Gold Members though).

When an infant is carried in a cot or car seat, bedding, napkins, feeding bottles and food for the journey may be carried onboard up to an additional 5kg.

Etihad Guest passengers and those flying up the pointy end get additional checked and carry-on baggage allowances too.

Frequent Flyer Program – Etihad Guest

Children from age 2 can be registered in the Etihad Guest program.  Etihad offers family membership where each family member registers individually but all points can be pooled into a single account.  A Family Head is nominated and up to eight family guests can join (NB they do not have to be direct relations of the family head, nor live in the same household).  

Etihad Guest is one of the most generous family programs we have come across. As local residents with an Etihad Guest credit card as well, we have cashed in numerous long haul rewards over the years.

Our Globetrotters View of Etihad Airways

We fly with Etihad most often as they are less than a 10-minute drive from our home – but not always the cheapest, and despite their claims of winning best airport, not always the most user-friendly. Abu Dhabi International Airport AUH can be incredibly busy, with most flights it seems outside of A380’s boarding from the tarmac which requires additional transfers, never easy with small children.  This is doubly challenging after long flights when you need to board a bus back to the terminal.

The move to the new Midfields Terminal is desperately needed and seems to be constantly delayed – here we are in 2020 several years after the build was seemingly complete and countless opening deadlines have been and past. 

I am yet to be convinced on the Flying Nannies concept, however.  Heading the right way and a great initiative, but I have found them of limited help on most flights.  We had one wonderful experience flying to Perth, right at the end of the flight they did face painting and gave the kids crowns and cards, but generally speaking, I seem to get less than a cursory glance. In fact I’d go as far as to say the lady in orange deliberately avoids eye contact with me.   

I am nit-picking a little as we do travel with them so frequently, they do bring kids meals out in advance, but like so many airlines can they not clear the trays away a little earlier too? So many times I have been trapped along with bouncing infants and have taken tidying up into my own hands.

I also love the concept of the free airport strollers , but too often we have arrived at the far end of Terminal 3 and had to walk the entire way back to baggage claim carrying infants, looking forlornly at the empty racks where the strollers should be (Update: yes this just happened again in August when I tried to get to passport control with three very sleepy tots in the middle of the night, on my own).

All in all, Etihad are an airline I would recommend for families – particularly if you’re lucky enough to be sitting up the pointy end and access the lounges – but economy passengers are not entirely forgotten.

The Etihad Guest frequent flyer family pooling system is arguably one of the best in the world and we have benefited many times from pooling our family points.  Our children are now all Silver Guests and Mr Globetrotter and I are Gold which helps significantly with accumulating points faster and being offered upgrades when available. (This never happens when I’m flying alone with the kids, but we did recently get an upgrade from Economy to First, cannot argue with that for loyalty paying off).

Great tips Keri! We are flying Etihad for the first time this summer when we go back to the uk, good to hear about kids packs etc as I was so impressed with Emirates version of this, will be interesting to see how it compares this time!

Yes the kids packs aren’t bad – need updating though, sick of the same old stuff every time we fly!!

How to Fly With Children, According to a Traveling Nanny

For parents, seamlessly getting from point A to point B with kids can be challenging. Add in a long-haul flight through multiple time zones, and it’s a full-blown nightmare. And while it would be great to travel with a personal nanny, that’s not an option for most. Instead, you’re left figuring out ways to entertain your children for hours and prevent evil glares from surrounding passengers . Terrible? Yes. So we thought, There's got to be a better way .

To figure out the secret to having a (mostly) stress-free flight with little ones, we turned to Denya Glover, one of Etihad Airways' flying nannies . Not to be confused with a flying nun, a [Flying Nanny is a free service offered by the airline on lengthy flights across all classes of service to serve as an extra pair of hands for parents. They are experts in the art of entertaining antsy toddlers and lulling fussy newborns to sleep, even at 30,000 feet. Every Flying Nanny is a certified flight attendant and graduate of the prestigious Norland College in England, receiving the same training trusted by the royal family to keep their children in line.

Here are Glover's top tips for keeping your kids—and yourself—sane during your next flight.

1. Choose child-friendly airlines and airports.   "As most parents know, not all airlines are ideal for traveling with little ones. Etihad Airways’ inflight Flying Nanny service is designed to give parents an extra set of hands. When they see our orange apron—a signature part of the Flying Nanny uniform—they know a helping pair of hands is on the way."

2. Check in-flight meal offerings beforehand and plan ahead with snacks. "Children have their own food habits and oftentimes can stay hungry if they won’t eat what’s served onboard. Parents should pack high-protein snacks so they always have something to munch on. Carrying something you know your child likes makes for a relaxed journey ahead and becomes especially helpful when waking up jet-lagged in another country with no 24-hour room service."

3. With a child’s carry-on, less is more. "While most children will want to bring each and every toy on their journey, it’s important to downsize, especially since, as the parent, you will be tasked to keep tabs on it all. Let children pack their own carry-on (those with wheels work best), but limit items to only what can fit inside."

4. Take advantage of early boarding.   "When you hear that early boarding announcement, those are your magic words to make a break for it. Utilize the few extra minutes to get everything settled and communicate any specific needs with your flight attendant prior to general boarding."

5. Relieve pain due to ear pressure.   "When taking off, many children experience ear pain due to the increase in air pressure. Most parents think that ear plugs will solve the problem, but I recommend something else. Ask the flight attendant for some warm water (not too hot, not too cold), a tissue, and a cup. Place the wet tissue in the cup and then over the ear. The steam will relieve the pressure and soothe the pain. Happy children, happy flight!"

6. Prepare for messy moments.   "Carry extra bibs to avoid having to give your baby a new change of clothes. They are great for spit up and easy to wash and carry, saving you space for that extra outfit you really want to take with you. And don’t forget lots of wipes for toddler meals and diaper changes."

7. Distraction is key.   "While a quick movie works for shorter flights, keeping children entertained for 15+ hours is no easy feat. Distraction is essential for keeping younger guests occupied without getting anxious. One of my favorite activities is to teach our younger guests origami, which is great for kids of all ages and requires little preparation as paper is easily accessible on any flight."

8. Make in-flight bedtimes easy.   "While some children fall asleep almost immediately on planes, for others it can be more difficult. It’s important to bring a set of comfortable pajamas, as well as any favorite stuffed animals or blanket to make older kids feel comfortable if they get homesick or scared."

9. Let your child sleep, regardless of time zone changes.   "While our cardinal rule as adult flyers is to adjust to the time zone of our destination, the opposite is true for children. Allowing your child to sleep as normal will prevent grumpiness and diminish jet lag."

10. Ward off meltdowns with surprises.   "Offering packable surprises like stickers or sweet treats toward the end of the flight as a reward will give your child something to look forward to and encourage good behavior."

Do I need to reserve a seat for my infant?

Children up to two years old (24 months), are not required to have their own seat as these children may sit on an adult's lap. Only one lap child is allowed per adult. If one adult is traveling with more than one infant under two years of age, a seat will have to be purchased for the second infant. You can also choose to purchase a seat for your infant as long as you have the proper child restraint device.

Will I pay for my infant to travel?

Yes, a child up to two years old (24 months) is usually charged 10% of an adult fare plus taxes if he or she will be sitting on an adult's lap.

What if my child turns two on the trip; will I have to buy a ticket for the return flight?

Yes, a ticket will have to be purchased for any flight on which the infant will be over two years old.

What infant amenities are available on the aircraft I'll be flying (i.e. bassinets)?

Etihad Airways offers:

• Changing facilities
• Baby meals (to be requested at the time of reservation or 24 hours before departure)

Can I sit in the exit row with my infant?

Neither lap children nor infants in car seats are allowed to sit in an exit row. In fact, all passengers in an exit row must be at least 15 years of age. In addition, infant seats are not allowed in the row directly in front of or directly behind an exit.

Simple Flying

Which airlines are best for traveling with children.

Holidays are always exciting, but traveling with young children? The jury's out. Love it or hate it here are the best airlines for traveling with your kids.

What is it about traveling with children that makes flying just that little bit more stressful? Flying with children requires a lot of determination. So it comes as pleasing news that there are some airlines out there that want child and parent alike to have a relaxing onboard experience. This could be in the form of children's entertainment and meals to free baggage allowances or even sky nannies! In no particular order, here are the world's best child-friendly airlines.

Etihad Airways

It appears that the Middle Eastern carriers are leading when it comes to offering a family-friendly service. Among them, Etihad offers an almost unprecedented service with child and infant fares for passengers under 12 years old as well as children's meals, movies, and games. The airline also offers a bassinet for babies on a first-come-first-served basis and provides young children with an activity pack on board. But that's not all. The airline takes the pressure off parents by offering a Flying Nanny. That's right, with Etihad your children will get just that extra attention for no extra cost. And for parents, there's the extra assurance that a pushchair or car seat can be taken for free in addition to a normal baggage allowance. Etihad does pull out all the stops. On its website , it says:

"We do everything we can to make flying with children as comfortable as we can."

And we believe it.

When it comes to catering for children, Air Canada makes its inflight experience as adventurous as possible. It offers an explorer-themed backpack packed with entertainment like puzzles and coloring books as well as special luggage tags. It also makes a commitment to sit children under 14 with a parent or guardian for no extra cost, has family priority boarding and family check-in. But traveling on Air Canada is the most child-friendly when flying internationally. This is when the airline offers a child fare and child meals.

Whilst other airlines accommodate passengers by allowing them to bring extra bottled milk and food sachets, All Nippon Airways operates a kind of onboard baby shop. It provides formula milk and nappies to allow for extra passenger ease. It also has bassinets that come with the latest technology: a blanket designed for heat retention, ventilation, and absorbency. As well as this, All Nippon Airways has allergen-free child meal options which can be requested before flying.

Lufthansa is turning the operational element of the airport on its head. When it comes to traveling with children, it incentivizes parents to make the most of viewing points as a form of entertainment for children. It says :

"At many airports, there are viewing terraces available which, in fine weather, allow even better insights into how an airport works. If your children would prefer to play and run around, visit the play corners specifically designed for children which most airports provide."

There's also the option to check in one 23kg bag for passengers under two years old. What's more, the airline recently collaborated with a Michelin star chef to provide a healthy, balanced, and fun-looking in-flight menu for its young passengers.

Special mentions

Whilst some airlines excel in their provisions for children, it seems as though the Middle Eastern and Asian carriers are championing the child-friendly aura. Special mentions must also be handed to Emirates who offer child headsets unlike most airlines as well as a free stroller at hub airports. Gulf Air, like Etihad, also uses a Flying Nanny to make flights more enjoyable for children.

What Documents Do I Need to Fly Internationally with Kids?

If you’re wondering what documents babies and children need to fly internationally, you’re in the right place! There are a few different documents your children will need as U.S. citizens to travel internationally (if your kids have different citizenship, please refer to the rules and regulations for their country of citizenship). Then, other types of documents may be needed, depending on the airline, destination country, transit country, etc.

Documents You Need for International Travel with Kids

• Valid US Passport : Regardless of age, children with U.S. citizenship need a valid passport for air travel to another country (even babies!). The application process for children under 16 needs to be completed in person. Both parents are required to be present. Children’s passports are valid for five years.
• Proof of Relationship to Child : While you may not be asked for it, we highly recommend that you travel with some type of document proving your relationship to your child (e.g., birth certificate, adoption certificate, etc.). Please note, some countries or airlines will require this type of document. It is your responsibility to know the documents needed before you depart for your trip.
• Child Travel Consent : If you are traveling without your child’s other parent, plan on bringing a letter of consent from the other parent to travel alone with your child. Some countries require letters to be notarized. This letter should contain the child’s basic information (e.g., name, gender, birthday, place of birth, passport number, etc.), both parents’ names and contact information, the traveling arrangements (flights, accommodations, other adults traveling in your party), and the destination.

Hello everybody,

Any advices or suggestions would be appreciated. Please note as a first time traveller with first baby I wont be too confident in leaving the airport on my own, unless supervised by the Etihad team itself.

P.S. I also read their premium lounges are not that good but then I think baby would need a bed to rest?

I don't think Etihad or the airport will offer anything other than the normal facilities available to all travellers. If you are expecting some special treatment because of your infant you will be disappointed.

This is the perfect situation to book an airport hotel.

By a business class fare and get lounge access or book a pay lounge or hotel or a shorter transit flight .

There are no specific facilities for infants other than changing rooms and the fact you get a stroller.

Hence a hotel room could be very relaxing for both of you.

You will enjoy your time at the airport. I suggest you get the free stroller they offer and go window shopping :)

Cabin Review: Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Business Studio

• Etihad Airways' new business class cabin offers exceptional comfort with direct aisle access.
• The modern cabin features outstanding privacy amenities and a spacious design to enhance the passenger experience.
• Etihad's business class seat impresses with numerous power outlets and customizable lighting options.

Etihad Airways launched its new long-haul service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and its fortress hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) at the beginning of the month. These new flights, which will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will feature the carrier's flagship business studio product alongside industry-leading economy class seats.

This modern business class cabin offers spacious seats which have been intricately designed down to the most minute detail to drastically improve the passenger experience in as many ways as possible. With direct aisle access, more power outlets than one could ever need, high-speed internet, and exceptional service, there are an undeniably massive number of impressive elements to this product.

Fortunately, Simple Flying was invited on April 1st for an exclusive tour of the airline's business studio cabin prior to its first flight back from BOS to AUH. We were also able to speak with Arik De, the carrier's Chief Revenue Officer, about the intense design process and the importance of improving the passenger experience.

Cabin configuration and overview

The welcoming and warm 787-9 cabin has 28 fully lie-flat business class seats arranged in a reverse herringbone 1-2-1 configuration. It offers all passengers direct aisle access – a feature rapidly becoming the industry standard on long-haul flights . With just seven rows, the cabin is fairly small and offers a relatively intimate experience, as well as impressive views of the jet's engines.

The seats also offer an impressively large amount of privacy, as the configuration has all seats angled inwards, allowing for superior legroom and for each passenger to maintain their own space. After takeoff, passengers can also extend a sliding door forward, allowing them to have a personal enclosed suite.

Window seats also angle towards the windows, allowing passengers to take in views without being forced to crane their neck, which is not possible in business class seats that angle towards the aisle, such as JetBlue's Mint or Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class. Between the two middle seats, there is a moveable privacy divider, allowing passengers traveling together to converse freely or maintain their private business studio.

The hard product

Etihad's seat is extremely competitive with the other Middle Eastern carriers, and excels beyond most other products offered on international business class flights out of Boston. The airline designed the seat with comfort in mind, and it very much feels like a seat that was designed for next-generation premium travel.

The seat itself is comfortable to sit in even when situated in an upright position, and offers dynamic seat controls, allowing passengers to adjust every part of the seat to reach their ideal position of comfort. In the lie-flat position, the seat is exceptionally roomy, and is perfectly comfortable for someone around 6 feet, 4 inches (193 centimeters) tall.

Where the seat shines, however, is with the impressive array of specific accents and design features incorporated into the seat to make the flight experience as smooth as possible. The massive tray table, which rests under the extremely large television screen, can be adjusted in any number of ways.

For starters, the tray table can be extended both forwards and backwards, allowing one to exit their seat during the middle of a meal, on account of a moveable armrest to the seat's left. The tray table can also be folded into a small cocktail tray, allowing one to have a place to store a beverage while watching a film.

Lighting and power

There were two categories in which this seat excelled above and beyond comparable business class cabins: the impressive array of power outlets and the uniquely customizable lighting system available at each seat. Across the board, all of these features demonstrated the airline's intention to create a product for the modern business traveler.

The seat is equipped with more power outlets than a traveler could ever need. None of them are located in bizarre or out-of-reach locations and can be accessed regardless of whether the seat is in a vertical or in lie-flat position. For starters, there is a standard universal plug located directly to the seat's right, which is not remarkable on its own.

Adjacent to the universal plug is another pair of outlets, which include both USB-A and USB-C connections, allowing anyone to charge any kind of cell phone. Lastly, and most impressively, is a wireless charging pad located directly to the right of the seat. The feature, which is not seen on most other airlines, allows passengers to ensure their wireless charging-compatible device remains charged without having to bring cords.

The in-seat lighting options are both numerous and impressive, which will likely permit an overall lower amount of ambient light in the cabin, especially during overnight flights. The seat does offer a traditional overhead reading light, which can be a little bright for the liking of other passengers in the cabin who may be trying to sleep.

The more impressive offerings of the seat's lighting include a small reading light located near the passenger's head, allowing for the light to be mostly contained within a single seat. Furthermore, a gorgeous and intricately designed ambient light is also available next to the passenger's head and contributes to the relaxed ambiance of the cabin.

The bottom line

Across the board, the Etihad 787-9 business studio is designed to suit all the needs of the modern business traveler, providing as much comfort as possible. In an interview with Simple Flying, the airline's Chief Revenue Officer had the following words to share describing the management team's involvement in the design process:

"You don't usually see airline leadership teams going and testing the products out themselves. We want to kick the tires. The leadership team is on the aircraft, taking pictures and passing along feedback in order to improve the product."

De would continue to describe a culture of involvement from the leadership team, ensuring that all products are tested by a number of different teams across the company. With this strategy, the carrier is able to continue improving its product offerings and guarantee the best possible product offering eventually makes its way into Etihad cabins.
