This isn’t your average packing list! The clothing shown has been carefully selected and offers you brands, colors, fabrics, and functionality that will help make planning your travel wardrobe a breeze.

By including a combination of well-known travel brands along with your favorite retailers, you’ll find that you really can find a happy balance between travel and fashion!

Pack like a pro with Travel Fashion Girl and don’t forget to download your  free printable packing checklist!

Please keep in mind that each item shown represents visual ideas of how you can create a custom travel wardrobe. Read this guide to learn how to adapt the items to the styles and color palette of your choice. For a complete introduction to creating a travel wardrobe, please read  Pack Light Stylishly .

classic-packing-list

You can use this sample travel wardrobe as a stand alone minimalist packing list or as the main core of your clothing.   Long term travelers can use this list as well as vacation-goers. Keep reading to learn how.

Consisting of twelve pieces of clothing, these are the essentials chosen specifically to provide you with optimal function while maximizing your potential for varying travel outfits. Twelve pieces can create an ideal capsule wardrobe for travel and can also work with larger packing list. Make sure you can mix and match each item.

For long trips in particular you’ll need to choose fabrics that can wash and dry quickly and easily. For trips less than two weeks you may need to rewear clothing (a common pro traveler technique).

VERSATILE TRAVEL WARDROBE OPTIONS

WHERE AND WHEN ARE YOU TRAVELING?

This packing list is an ideal capsule wardrobe for travel. You can easily travel with only twelve pieces for Round the World trips , two week vacations , or even weekend travel . For cold weather, please read these tips .

Depending on the length of your trip there’s a good chance you’ll need to do laundry. For two week trips you can use the Maximista Packing List to make complete outfits for two weeks but this is the exception.

The key to traveling for more than three weeks is to do laundry once a week and just pack one week’s worth of clothing!

If you’re using the Classic Packing List for longer trips, hand washing is necessary. Make sure to choose the right fabrics for your basics is necessary to ensure maximum use and swift washing times.

Suggested items to pack include a universal rubber sink plug and packable clothesline to make this process a breeze!

GUIDELINES TO CHOOSE APPROPRIATE ITEMS

As with all the lists, it is important to select clothing items that work well together and can be used interchangeably.

COLOR: One Color Story – solids, neutrals, patterns in same color story ok

FABRIC: Very flexible for short trips; Versatile for long trips: fabrics can vary, quick dry and light preferable

CUT: Good fit; every item should  mix and match

STYLE: Appropriate in various settings: Beach, Temples, Villages, Cities, Treks, etc

Four Tank Tops/Short Sleeve Tops in the heat or Four Long Sleeves for Cooler Climates  Synthetic fabric, quick dry, solid colors or prints in same color story to layer as needed for varying temperatures and travel outfit variety. Tunics  can be versatile and can be worn in more than ways than regular length tops and the longer length is most flattering to leggings .

Ideally, all tops should mix and match with each other for the cold. Must match all bottoms to make the most of your travel wardrobe.

One Long Sleeve Shirt Light quick drying fabrics in the heat. Able to layer over other tops and dresses as a light jacket or cover up. Button up tops are versatile. Merino wool or cashmere to act as a top layer over other tops as needed.

Remember to choose sleeve lengths that you like. Some women like sleeveless and others like long sleeves. Choose what works for you.

Five sets of Bottoms  Highly dependent on your destination and the weather, choose items that can be used for every activity. Should mix and match with all tops.

Whether you choose long pants, capris, shorts, or skirts is up to you.  Jeans work well  on vacations, trips to metropolitan cities, or cool climates. Very destination dependent. They may be thick but hardly have to be washed.

If you pack colorful or printed tops choose solid or neutral bottoms and vice versa.

Two Dresses or if you prefer separates choose skirts instead. You can go one of two ways with this: bold colors or prints or classic style with neutral color. It depends on your style.

Versatility is key. For dresses choose one that can take you from day to night with some added accessories or an extra hint of makeup. Minimum should be one day/night and one day. A classic wrap dress is always a great choice, maxi (long length) dresses are great for conservative environments, and an LBD (or your favorite color) work well.

Two Outerwear One coat/jacket plus one layer for underneath.

One-Two Bathing Suits Reversible bathing suits allow you to mix and match. Choose one that has a neutral shade on one side so it can easily double up as a bra under your tops.

Three Bras Neutral colors that matches with all your tops. Nude tones recommended. Read about choosing the best bras for travel .

One Sports Bra For long trips if you plan on doing activities or have long bumpy transportation journeys.

Two Sleepwear Pajamas depends on your personal preference but try to choose versatile items that can be worn outside the bedroom if needed such as running shorts and a fitness top. Silk or satin chemises and sets can be used as a light option as well.

Ten Pairs of Travel Underwear Quick dry, avoid 100% cotton or mesh. Quantity depends on length of trip. Read these tips for extended travel .

Three Pairs of Shoes Choose versatile footwear . Style depends greatly on your activities and the weather but one thing’s for sure: choose comfort over fashion. A balance between functionality and fashion is ideal! Should mix and match all clothing and work for all  activities. Read our ten step guide to choosing the best travel shoes for any trip.

Accessories One belt that can be worn with pants and dress for practical style. Jewelry can be used to add color, change style, or add glam. Don’t forget them. Read the lazy girl’s guide to stylish travel accessories for more ideas.

Makeup Take the essentials but leave the drawer filled with makeup at home. Decanter full sizes into smaller reusable containers with only the quantity you need. Read these posts for more travel makeup tips .

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

PRAYRNA SINHA

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

' src=

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

' src=

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

8 Stylish Travel Influencers You Need to Follow Right Now

Inspiration is everywhere on Instagram—so much so that once you go down the rabbit hole, it can sometimes be impossible to put down the phone. In no category is this more true than in fashion. Each day, thousands of style “influencers” post street-style photographs and vacation pics that aim to inspire and connect followers to their feeds (and make a buck selling clothes, of course), but those that stand out have a unique aesthetic that doesn’t come from just posting #partner pics. These fashion influencers make clothes come alive against the backdrop of stunning beaches, deserts, cliff sides, and more. Here, a few of our favorite stylish travel influencers you should follow, too.

See recent posts by Katie James Watkinson

Negin Mirsalehi ( @neginmirsalehi )

The 29-year-old Dutch blogger made this year’s Europe Forbes 30 Under 30, thanks to her social media “influencer” status (she has a 4.5 million Instagram followers and reportedly makes $20,000 for sponsored posts). But don’t think that makes her a sell-out: Mirsalehi self-funds her own hair-care line, Gisou, whose primary ingredient—honey—is sourced from her family’s bee garden. She also isn’t just posting high-end labels and free clothes that get sent to her. At home in Amsterdam, Mirsalehi pairs pointed-toe Acne booties with leather pants and cozy Zara sweaters. While traveling the world with brands like Revolve, she shows off an enviable collection of Lisa Marie Fernandez and Marisya swimsuits. (And we’re always jealous of her long brown locks, which are somehow never out of place.)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcXllfVgE05/?taken-by=negin_mirsalehi

Lee Litumbe ( @spiritedpursuit )

It’s not the clothes so much as the setting and the girl wearing them that make this Cameroonian blogger’s posts so inspiring. Litumbe is committed to storytelling from the black female perspective, and she makes both known and less-traveled destinations in Africa come alive through her lively Instagram shots. Whether she’s in a brightly hued caftan in the empty Merzouga Desert or a one-piece swimsuit on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar, Litumbe makes the places she travels to appear both exotic and accessible.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BeRTJKdDUxm/?taken-by=spiritedpursuit

Julie Sariñana ( @sincerelyjules )

Whether at home in L.A. or jet-setting to Bali, this blogger takes her understated, cool-girl style everywhere she goes. It’s hard to tell if it’s Sariñana’s petite frame, mocha skin tone, or sly, close-lipped smile that make an ordinary look—loose-fitting jeans; crisp, white oxfords—seem extraordinary (maybe it’s the combination of all three), but she always has this envious sparkle, whether that’s heading the supermarket in cut-offs and a Lovers and Friends bodysuit, on the beach in Thailand in a Marisya high-neck one-piece, or decked out in a floor-length floral gown by Spell in Mexico.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BduZnmGAxAi/?hl=en&taken-by=sincerelyjules

Aimee Song ( @songofstyle )

As one of the original style bloggers, Song has amassed a loyal following who are inspired by her effortless daytime wardrobe and high-wattage, glamorous looks worn during fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Although she wears many high-end brands (Acne Studios; Louis Vuitton; Chloé), Song strikes an attainable, high-low balance that keeps her followers coming back for more (think vintage Levis paired with crystal-embellished Manolo Blahnik sandals).

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbjxJy2D88J/?hl=en&taken-by=songofstyle

Pamela Allier ( @pamallier )

Born and raised in Mexico City, Allier gained her following the true “it” girl way—by being snapped by street-style photographers. She took her fashion status to the next level on Instagram in 2014, and quickly gained fans with her deft daytime casual style (at home in Mexico, that means everything from brunch-appropriate jeans and off-the-shoulder tops to maximalist-layering prints with simple shoes) and signature ear-to-ear grin.

Camille Charrière ( @camillecharriere )

Charrière’s posts are a little quirky and irreverent, which sets her apart from the glamorous, posed shots of many Instagram-based style influencers. On vacation in Tulum, for example, she’ll wear a silk-satin dress by Off White, pulled off with effortless glam as only a Parisian could do. When she’s at home in London, Charrière sports labels you probably haven’t heard of, like E.L.V. denim, but will immediately go buy.

Ellie ( @slipintostyle )

It takes balls to wear what this one-name style-setter does. Case in point: a white sweatshirt paired with a floor-grazing zebra-print skirt, orange JW Anderson handbag, and New Balance running shoes (not the athleisure kind, but rather the type you wear to go hiking in the Adirondacks). However it sounds, Ellie’s mix-and-match, high-low aesthetic—frequently shot in an urban environment—exudes off-the-charts confidence.

Aggie Lal ( @travelinhershoes )

If you’re one of those people who likes to look at pictures of far-flung beaches on Instagram, it’s time to join the #AggieTribe. Born in Poland, educated in Australia, and now based in Los Angeles, Lal is truly is a citizen of the world; her wardrobe, on the other hand, is decidedly California beach-chic—perfect when jetting to one gorgeous beach after the next.

As working remotely becomes a habit, so too does schlepping our “offices” with us wherever we go—especially this holiday season . This has inspired our search for the best travel backpacks for women. 7 Things Fashion Girls Will Never Stop Wearing to the Airport

Bobby Schuessler

Mastering the perfect  airport look often requires a bit of expert styling finesse to properly strike that balance between comfort and cool. After all,  while we undoubtedly want to remain cozy for a long flight, we also want that laid-back 'fit to reflect our fashion-forward sensibilities. To uncover these A+ travel looks , we turn to celebs and fashion girls alike for inspiration.

In reference to the latter, we realized that this crew routinely incorporates a few easy yet polished essentials into their looks to achieve their perfect airport ensembles. With that in mind, keep scrolling for a full breakdown on the seven pieces to consider working into your travel rotation to uncover your new go-to look. Plus, shop the finds as well to get ready for your next big trip.

fashion-airport-outfits-277191-1549660437132-image

It's no secret that leggings are one of the comfiest items you can opt for when it comes to travel thanks to their stretchy nature. To elevate the casual pants, fashion girls tend to pair them with smart separates like cool tops or blazers to streamline the silhouette.

Topshop + Elasticated Logo Leggings

An oversize scarf is a must for its versatility. It's not only stylish, but if you choose a large enough silhouette, it can also double as a blanket to combat those frigid airplane temperatures.

Anine Bing + Little Lenny Scarf

An instant way to look put-together? Top off any look with a bold statement coat. You can basically wear anything underneath and still come across fashion-forward

AllSaints + Lara Check Coat

You'll notice throughout all of the imagery here that one of the must-haves for a fashion girl is sleek, hard-sided luggage. We often see these pieces over soft-sided duffels these days.

Tumi + International Carry-On

While ankle boots and sandals are also airport shoe go-tos, we see sneakers more than any other footwear because they're comfortable, easy to slip on and off through security, and cool in nature.

Converse + Chuck Taylor High Top Sneaker

Aside from actual luggage, crossbody bags are also a must to not only accentuate an outfit but also to keep all of your essentials—ID, phone, boarding passes, and so on—in one safe place.

Zara + Small Oval Crossbody Bag

In addition to leggings, we also see jeans as a travel staple. While many styles can be too stiff and constricting, stretchy, loose styles are more practical.

Joe's Jeans + The High Rise Cropped Boot Jeans

Next, check out what real women in Paris wear at the airport .

Pack less wear more, spend less see more

Chic one bag travel: an interview with Travel Fashion Girl’s Alex Jimenez

9 March 2013 by Jo

Hi Frugalistas!   One of the things I love to do is read other blogs about packing light.  I’m particularly fond of specialist packing websites.  One of my very favorite sites is www.travelfashiongirl.com , a brilliant website that combines packing light with current fashions in a mouthwateringly colourful and aspirational combination.  The editor and owner of Travel Fashion Girl, Alex Jimenez, very kindly agreed to an interview for frugalfirstclasstravel to share some of her favorite tips with us.

What are your top tips for traveling light & stylish?

Plan your travel outfits in advance and choose items you can mix and match. Once you play around with the various combinations you can make, you’ll realize it’s not quantity, but quality. You can make up to 3 weeks’ worth of outfits with just ten items if you choose each piece carefully.

You don’t have to stick to one color but sticking to one color story helps you mix and match and also allows you to use prints with ease.

As far as style goes, so long as you pack clothing you feel great wearing then you will be stylish. Style is a matter of confidence, not fashion.

Many women who read my packing posts seem to struggle terribly with the shoe question.  What is your strategy for choosing the minimum amount of shoes for max impact?

Shoes are always the worst because everyone’s needs vary and activities on trips differ. The magic number for shoes really is three: one for comfort, one for function, and one for fun. Then you decide what type of shoe falls into these categories depending on your itinerary.

Comfort should be the pair of shoes you can use to sightsee and walk for hours at a time. There seems to be a general consensus with Travel Fashion Girl readers that the new style friendly Crocs such as the Carlie Flats are the way to go for comfort.

The second pair of shoes should be for function and more purpose driven such as trainers or hiking boots. Merrells are very popular as they offer a trainer/boot hybrid type shoe.

Lastly, there is always room in every bag for a thin pair of flats or pretty sandals that you can wear when you want to dress up a bit for a nice dinner, nightlife, meeting, or just when you’re tired of looking like a traveler.

Find out more about these travel shoes in Alex’s post: Fashionable Travel Shoes .

What are your favorite choices for multitasking pieces that can be worn for different occasions or climates?

My favorite multi-tasking piece is a basic but chic button up top in a vibrant color like royal blue because it can be dressed up in the city, worn as a light jacket by the sea, used as a shield from the sun, and worn with a long sleeve top underneath in the cold. You can also wear it over dresses, tucked into skirts, loosely over leggings, and casually with jeans.

What is the one thing I will always find in your bag regardless of your destination?

My NARS multiple makeup stick, St Ives Apricot Face Scrub, and Abba Leave-in Conditioner. I never leave home without them. If I only had three beauty items, these are it.

What are the outfits or garments that make you cringe when see them on other travellers?

No outfit is cringe-worthy so long as the traveler is happy wearing it. If you love the way convertible pants look on you, that’s awesome. If not, then you should know it’s okay to wear regular clothing on your travels, too.

That’s why I created Travel Fashion Girl – because 5 years ago there were only travel technical clothing lists available that misled me to believe I needed $50 quick dry shirts that I never wore or that I had to buy convertible pants in order to travel. I was in for a big shock when I wanted to have drinks at a nice bar in Auckland or walk around in Sydney.

Pack clothing you feel great wearing especially because you have to wear it all the time and remember you can replenish your clothing on the road practically anywhere in the world!

What is your dream destination and your dream outfit to wear there?

My dream destinations all consist of beaches and Bora Bora is at the very top of that list! My dream outfit would be an ivory, lace trimmed shift dress with brown leather studded sandals, a fedora, and a new wedding ring to match ha-ha! 😉

Yes, I love that too! One of my 2013 not-resolutions was to not be judgmental of others’ travel choices, so I think Alex has suggested a good place to start.

I love this! I’m a big fan of Travel Fashion Girl, too. And it’s my life’s work trying to master the packing light art, as you know! I’m going solo for almost a week to Holland soon, and I’ll be packing carry on only with no husband to carry my bag, so I need to get it right!

Glad you enjoyed the post. Yes, there’s nothing like having to travel independently to hone those light packing skills!

Awesome, I live there. Let me know if you need advice and if you haven’t already been in the meantime 🙂

On topic: I love this interview, her motto on outfits is my motto on travel: no form of travel is wrong as long as you’re happy (and it’s not harmful). I follow her website, and it opened my eyes really. Planning for a long backpackingtrip is very stressful for a fashionista that also wants to be practical 🙂

8 February 2014 at 12:30 pm

I’m doing much better on the ‘no judging’ thing!

Stay tuned, as I’ve got a fab post coming up of travel blogger packing tips that’s going to be awesome!

5 September 2016 at 8:52 pm

You know, I personally hate packing light and all that hype around it. I like to be prepared for everything. Now mind you, I am no backpacker, so there really is no need for it. I like to pack smart, so it really makes no sense to take 10 undies on a 3day trip.

But I basically never travel without at least one suite and chic shoes, swimwear and one sportswear outfit – no matter where i go. But then again i like to travel so much more versatile than most other people do *shrug*

10 September 2016 at 4:36 pm

How you pack is entirely your choice Norman. Personally I love to pack light, but if that isn’t your style, then more power to you.

Packing Tips and Advice from Travel Fashion Girl

16

Did you know that you can travel to any destination with just a carryon ? But how do you do that when you have multiple things you’ll probably need for your upcoming trip? Well, it is totally doable when you change your perspective.

On the show today we have Alex Jimenez of Travel Fashion Girl —a website that teaches women how to travel with just a carry-on for any destination in the world. She specializes in helping women figure out what to wear, how to pack, and what products to take.

Alex started traveling the world in 2008 after taking a break from the fashion industry and later had an epiphany that changed her view on life. She started the Travel Fashion Girl empire after five years of traveling.

Stop thinking of the ‘ what ifs’ when packing because you can always buy something that you really need.

This episode was fun and filled with so much valuable tips on how to pack for your carryon. Here’s a preview:

  • [9:45] Every single item that you take has to make sense. It has to be multi-purpose with very light fabric that is functional. Travel Fashion Girl teaches how to choose from their own clothing without getting travel technical.
  • [11:35] The secret of packing cubes. Alex learned to use packing cubes as a form of compression versus organization to fit as much stuff into a smaller space to be able to travel with a carry-on only.
  • [12:58] Think of your go-to clothing pieces that makes you feel confident. We buy for many reasons and just end up wearing very few pieces of what we own. But there are always a few pieces that make you feel good and comfortable, which are more important than any fashion trend.
  • [18:57] Always check the weather before you travel. When you know what to expect, you don’t need just in case items. This can also help you carry versatile clothes that can act as ‘just in case’ items.
  • [21:34] Invest in your shoes and jackets more than any other items. Always consider your activities, the weather, the time of the year by doing your research properly.
  • [26:02 ] Moving and settling in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Alex explains why after years of traveling to 50 countries and never really settling down, she finally made the hard decision of settling in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
  • [33:33] Traveling solo. Alex explains how she first opened up her eyes to traveling alone, started traveling with a partner, and is now open to start traveling and having experiences alone again after her divorce. Learn about the benefits of traveling solo and enjoying your experience and how to handle traveling with friends to still enjoy your travel.

Enjoy your travel and let it change you!
