Tips for food tours in vietnam.

The best way to learn more about the Vietnamese culture is through her food. Because ask were a Vietnamese is the most proud of in their country and 9 out of 10 people will say its food. Doing a walking street food tour or a food tour on the back of a motorbike is one of the best experiences you can have in this country.

Street food in Vietnam is a very big thing. On every street corner in each city or even small villages, there is always a street food stall. And Vietnamese food belongs also to the best of the world. Lots of vegetables and fruit, often light in the stomach and extremely tasty. Each region of Vietnam has their own specialties and tastes. The food compared with north, central and south Vietnam can be very different. And even in each city within the region they use different flavours and have their own specialities.

You can of course go on the street and try some local street food by yourself. But the best way is to do a local street food tour. If you go by food tour you have a lot of benefits. First, a guide can explain a lot more background information about the ingredients and food. Also guides will bring you to local restaurants and food stall that you will never find by yourself. A healthy benefit is that all places were you are going to eat are tested and well known for locals, so you don’t have to worry about eating unhealthy or at an unsanitary places.

Then there is also the option to do walking food tours on food tours on the back of a motorbike. A walking food tour is a perfect introduction to the local food in a city, but a food tour on a motorbike gives an extra feeling to it, which makes it an unforgettable experience. Being on the back of a motorbike makes you feel you travel like a local. Driving like a local and eating at local places, you can’t make an experience more local. A small benefit is that with a motorbike tour you can also travel further and visit even less touristy places, were only the locals surround you.[/read]

I had the pleasure of spending two weeks with our guide, Giang Nguyen, on a food tour of Vietnam. Giang was an outstanding guide with a deep knowledge of the country and it's history, the regional foods and their preparation, as well as insights from his life in Vietnam. Giang managed a diverse group of guests, anticipating our needs and with good humor responding to our varied demands. His outgoing nature made him a friend to everyone on the tour and opened doors for us to meet local folks. For example, because Giang had befriended his wife, we had dinner in the home of a retired Vietnamese officer who served in the American war. The evening was both a delightful opportunity to eat a home cooked meal and a thought provoking discussion of the war and it's aftermath. As an added benefit, he is an award-winning photographer and generously spent time offering suggestions and tips to improve the photographs of the shutterbugs in the group. I could go on and on about Giang and his skill as a travel guide. I believe he made my trip a very special experience.

What people love about Food & Culinary Tours in Vietnam

Going through Realistic Asia was fabulous! They took care of coordinating the lodging, all transportation, and guided activities. Of course food was included as part of the tour, as well as breakfast included with all the hotels. My coordinator, Long Pham, checked in on me daily to make sure everything was going well. This was such an amazing experience, and way more affordable to go this route as opposed to trying to do it all on my end. Way less stress, too! I highly recommend this tour and going through Realistic Asia for touring Vietnam!
Fantastic workshop and would recommend to anybody that loves coffee! Very friendly and accommodating staff, who are very passionate about what they do. I had lots of fun, the class was very informative and the coffee is delicious!

Growing up, my mom implemented just two major rules: no motorcycles and no tattoos. Until the age of 29, I had obeyed both of these boundaries, but the motorcycle one seemed like a deal-breaker at this point. After all, I had just landed in Vietnam, and as Bourdain famously said, the only way to experience Hanoi is on a scooter.

While I was going to Saigon, not Hanoi, I felt that his point was still valid. Regardless, whenever I asked anyone for suggestions on what a tourist should do while there, one thing came up again and again: XO Tours , a motorbike tour through the city involving stops for street food along the way.

But as my trip approached, my itinerary was sparse, and I became increasingly nervous. How would I eat what locals eat? Sure, I’d be getting pho and banh mi, but where were the best snails, and bottom line, could someone please show me foods that I never knew existed? XO Tours turned out to be my ticket to all of that and more.

I felt that familiar rush of excitement the moment my guide, a young woman named Han, greeted me with a wave outside my hotel, the Ramada Encore by Wyndham in District One . She told me to get on the back of her white Vespa, and as we cannonballed through traffic, I held onto the back for dear life but couldn’t help grinning. It seemed like being on a scooter in the city unlocked a whole other dimension (and this may be true in all cities, though I haven’t tried scootering them all yet). I was able to appreciate the sights — whole families piled on scooters, packages dangling dangerously from the back, helmet fashion, and even dogs balancing by their owners' feet.

Huy Nguyen / Getty Images

It started out with soup, importantly, not pho. Instead, we had Bún Bò Huế. The bowl was massive, and even though we had at least three more food stops, I slurped down the entire mixture of spicy rice noodles and sliced beef, savoring each refreshing bite as the added lemongrass hit my tastebuds.

Before I could properly wipe my mouth, we sped off again, this time to a market in Chinatown, one of the largest wet markets in the country. Everything was out on the street, there were carts filled with fruits, blankets covered with fish, and live animals being sold to be slaughtered. Our next stop was appropriately for a barbecue.

Tableside, we grilled up goat breast while the very same goat hung from the rafters at the end of our table, being picked apart by the in-restaurant butcher. This was, I was told, to prove that it was a goat (a more expensive animal) and not a pig. Dipped in a garlic sauce, the goat tasted more or less like beef, and the spring onions and peanuts we gobbled down in between waiting for pieces to come off the charcoal paired perfectly with the (unlimited) beer.

Next was a seafood stop, where we saw scallops shucked and then grilled before being smothered in nuts and sizzling scallion oil. Crab legs were cracked open at the table, and there was even an embryonic duck egg, which I was instructed to eat like a soft-boiled egg, cracking it at the top, then scooping out the innards. “I don’t look at it when I eat it,” my guide said, but I couldn’t help but stare.

Filipe Lopes / Getty Images

Through it all, I white-knuckled the back of the scooter around twists and turns, roundabouts and alleyways, as we sped past neon signs and billows of smoke from carts filled with delicacies. There was, ever so thankfully, unlimited beer (included), which I slugged in order to keep up with the beads of sweat dripping from my chin to my thighs, thanks to the combination of the 100% humidity and my full belly.

Altogether, the tour was a magical one. It didn’t even really feel like a tour. Maybe all tours should be on the backs of scooters. And if you’re still worried about my mom, don’t be. I sent her a video of me on the scooter with a text that read, “Don’t worry, I’m wearing a helmet.”

WELCOME TO SAIGON

Sample some of the world’s best street food with Saigon Street Eats, created by an Australian-Vietnamese couple who are obsessed with Vietnamese food. Barbara and Vu run small group street food tours in Ho Chi Minh City, tours that delve into the culture, history and food of this exciting and crazy metropolis.

We are an anti-tour un-tour kind of operation. No stern lectures, no uniforms and no matchy-matchy bikes. We want you to feel like you’re hanging out with friends who are showing you the best — and tastiest — bits of their city.

That tastiness includes dishes you won’t find outside of Vietnam, or even outside of Saigon. All our street food tours are seasoned with stories that will help you understand the country’s unique history and culture, and how these intersect in the food. (Did we mention it’s the best in the world?)

The Saigon Street Eats team understands that not everyone is comfortable on the back of a motorbike. Our focus is the food, not the bikes. So we created a morning walking tour (the Pho Trail) and evening tours with the scaredy-cat option of taking taxis to and from the tour area. We don’t even poke fun at you for being a scaredy-cat! (We’re nice like that.)

Check out our NEW tour upgrade option: Pasteur Street craft beer, available on our evening tours. We are the only tour company in town offering a selection of Saigon-brewed American-style craft beer featuring uniquely Vietnamese flavours. Our craft beer packs contain three brews: Passionfruit Wheat Ale (4%); Jasmine IPA (6.5%) and Spice Island Saison (7.2%).

The Seafood Trail - a night eating adventure

Street Food 101 - an evening introduction to street food

Dive into local life in a bustling hẻm (alley) packed with food vendors who have spent decades perfecting their special dishes. While sampling a variety of simple street food, you’ll hear stories about this local neighbourhood  and how history has influenced the Saigon’s culinary scene

Vietnam tours are tasty, plain and simple. We won’t just drop you in Halong Bay and call it a day. Our local leaders will introduce you to rice farmers in Sapa and fishermen on the Mekong Delta. History and government, early history.

Vietnam has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds suggest that structured societies existed as early as the 1st millennium BC. Early society was mostly feudal and agriculture-based, with various dynasties overseeing different parts of Vietnam until the Chinese invasion of 111 BC, which saw the societies of Vietnam and China intertwined. Various Chinese dynasties dominated the area for hundreds of years, although revolts finally led to Vietnam gaining self-autonomy in 905. By 938, this period of Chinese imperial domination came to a close and Vietnam entered into an age of independence.

Recent history

During the 19th century, Vietnam came under the influence of French colonizers, who assumed control of Vietnam after the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885. French Indochina was formed in 1887, and included parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and, later on, Laos. Although the French managed to suppress internal movements towards independence for many years, their control was finally relinquished in 1954 when Vietnamese forces overcame the French during the first Indochina War. Following this war, Vietnam was divided, with separate forces ruling the north (led by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with support from the United States).

The second Indochina War created wide-scale devastation and turmoil for the people of Vietnam, leading to mass migration to other parts of the world as asylum seekers tried to escape the conflict. More recently, Vietnam has benefited from the free market economy set up in 1986. Vietnam's economy continues to expand, with agriculture and industry providing the backbone and the tourism sector also contributing. Although many Vietnamese people live below the poverty line, there have been widespread improvements in literacy and health, which hopefully will continue to improve.

Geography and environment

Occupying a long, thin part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam shares borders with China , Laos and Cambodia . Much of Vietnam's terrain is mountainous, particularly the north and central highland regions. Although people still choose to live in the densely forested highland regions, most of Vietnam's population is concentrated in the cities of the low-lying areas, where infrastructure is more easily built and the land is fertile. One of the 12 great rivers of the world, the Mekong, runs through Vietnam and has been responsible for wide-scale flooding. A system of canals and levees has been quite successful in redistributing the water during monsoons, and has helped to alleviate flooding in the Mekong Delta and surrounding areas.

Vietnam has a nice mix of interesting markets and small shops, with handicrafts, art and clothing among the best picks.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Vietnam

1. Tailored clothing

Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to get tailor-made clothing at a great price. Find a tailor, choose your fabric, get measured and return later to collect your custom-made fashion.

2. Hilltribe handicrafts

Some of Vietnam's hilltribe people make excellent woven bags, clothing and jewelry which make meaningful souvenirs for friends back home.

As one of the world's largest coffee exporters, Vietnamese coffee is among the world's best. If you’re a coffee fan, why not take a little taste of Vietnam home with you.

4. Lacquerware

The time-consuming, intensive process of creating Vietnamese lacquer art results in a beautiful, smooth and polished finish that adorns everything from bowls to paintings and jewelry boxes. While not the cheapest of souvenirs, authentic lacquer art is worth spending a bit more on.

Culture and customs

Vietnam's ancient culture can be traced back centuries and over the years has been influenced in different ways by the Chinese, Khmer, French and American cultures. For most Vietnamese people, connection to family and community is paramount - whether they are from rural villages or living in fast-paced cities.

Most festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family - participating in rituals, feasting on special foods, giving symbolic gifts and paying respects to ancestors. Most Vietnamese people practice a form of religion that is an interesting mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, although there are also a large number of practising Catholics living in Vietnam.

Having endured the hardship that the Vietnam War brought in the 1960s and 1970s, most Vietnamese people are keen to get on with life, living with a sense of optimism and humility.

Vietnam has an incredibly diverse tropical climate, and temperatures vary from 39°F in Sapa in winter to humid 97°F days in Saigon in the middle of the dry season. The monsoons bring heavy rain to the south, and a cooler winter to the north depending on when you plan to tour Vietnam.

What kinds of transport will I be using in Vietnam?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Vietnam, you may find yourself traveling by:

  • Overnight sleeper train

Traveling aboard an overnight sleeper train is a fun way to journey through Vietnam. Interact with other passengers or sit by a window and watch the world go by.

Curious? Click here read more about what to expect on an overnight train.

Take time to wave to locals as you cycle at a leisurely pace past rice paddies and through simple villages in rural Vietnam

Get acquainted with the Vietnamese way of life while on a memorable home stay. Be exposed to new languages, cuisine and customs while making friends with your hosts and neighbors.

Is Vietnam a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

The LGBQTIA+ community is gradually gaining recognition in Vietnam, with gay pride parades becoming a regular occurrence and a lift on same-sex marriage bans in 2015. With that said, Vietnam is still a conservative culture and many still hide their sexuality from their families. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have some gay-friendly bars and events. It's generally recommended that both gay and straight couples resist showing public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Does my trip to Vietnam support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Vietnam directly support our foundation partners, Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, Vun Art and WildAct.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is helping disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, fighting the causes of human trafficking and (where possible) reuniting homeless or trafficked children with their families. Donations from our trips help their team of social workers, psychologists, teachers, and lawyers to offer individualized support to every child rescued.

Find out more or make a donation

Vun Art Vun Art empowers people with disabilities in Vietnam through vocational training and employment opportunities. They teach traditional folk painting using recycled materials which provides job opportunities, helps to preserve the ancient artform and cares for the local environment all at once. Donations from our trips support Vun Art's capacity-building programs for people with disabilities, including trainees' allowance, transportation, and equipment.

WildAct protects migratory birds of Vietnam and reduces illegal hunting by educating local communities about the importance of conservation. Donations from our trips help WildAct run educational programs to stop the illegal hunting of threatened migratory birds through knowledge-sharing in local communities.

Is Vietnam accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Despite having a high population of people with disabilities, accessible infrastructure and facilities are still limited in Vietnam. Chaotic traffic and pavements blocked by parked motorbikes and street stalls, uneven footpaths and high curbs add to the challenges of getting around for travelers with mobility or vision disabilities. Most entrances to hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist sites will have steps and many doorways will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs wider than 60cm. Some sights and destinations will not be fully accessible (ie. Ha Long Bay boats, Cu Chi Tunnels) but other places such as Hoi An are flat and much more wheelchair-friendly. There are likely to be situations where travelers with disabilities may need to rely on local people to help. Taxis are readily available and an affordable way to get around for travelers who are not confident in exploring independently on foot.

Vietnam Food Tour in 2021

Travel guide

Vietnam food tour: everything you need to know.

The locals’ eating habits and the country’s food facts might urge foodies to fly and book Vietnam Food Tour in 2021. While some food connoisseurs are keen on the way the Vietnamese eat and cook, the others are interested in Vietnam’s culinary culture. You should always come and see for yourself how delicious the food is, how interesting it is to use the chopsticks, and how friendly the residents are.

About Vietnam Food Tours

There are Vietnam Food Tours to Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Saigon, Mekong Delta, etc., which opens chances for foodies all over the world to explore the taste and eating etiquette. In a typical food tour, tourists will visit the local markets for a glimpse of the street food, ingredients, local merchants, and market practices. There will be also the ideal time for relishing the outstanding street food served by the street vendors. In Hanoi, make sure you treat your stomach with Hanoi Pho, noodle with grilled pork (Bun Cha), spring rolls with crabs (Nem Cua Be), pyramidal rice dumplings (Banh Gio), and cake with shrimp (Banh Tom). A simple walking in Hanoi Old Quarter will turn to be a happy culinary tour. You can try sitting on a plastic stool, order your food, and eat the whole.

Besides, Hoi An food tours are rich in the traditional dishes namely Cao Lau (noodles served with dark pork broth), steamed rice cakes, chicken rice, white rose dumplings, etc. The old town is filled with restaurants and street vendors that exhilarate people to eat and drink, which results in excitingly culinary episodes. Especially, Hoi An travel often includes a cooking class for hands-on practices. If the package begins after the sunset, it would take around 2.5 hours. If the tour has a cooking class, it would start in the early morning so that you can visit a local market, buy fresh ingredients for the class. Anybody with dietary notices and food allergies should notify the operators in advance. By learning and practicing how to cook, participants would receive the recipe for later practice at home. This kind of culinary adventure in the Old Town will be an unforgettable experience for all food connoisseurs. They will then agree that Hoi An is a paradise for foodies.

Furthermore, how about Hue Food Tours? The one-day package will take you to Dong Ba Market, the oldest and biggest wholesale market in Hue. You will meet the locals and can buy some goods. For breakfast, let’s try noodle soup with beef (Bun Bo Hue) and using Vietnamese chopsticks. In the next minutes, get on a cycle for a tour toward Trang Tien Bridge. The three-wheel vehicle will keep taking you to Hue Citadel, shops, and some quiet streets. Also, if the program includes a cooking class, you are likely to get the session in Y Thao Restaurant for learning how to make spring rolls, banana flower salad, and pancakes. After the class, go out and explore the specialties of mussel rice, pork grilled on lemongrass stick (Nem Lui), Vietnamese crepe made of rice flour (Banh Khoai), etc. The Hue street food will never fail to enchant travelers. None neglects Hue during their time in Da Nang and Hoi An as three destinations form a complete package.

Some guests might travel due to their interest in a variety of Vietnamese noodles. If it is your case, add these names to the list: Hanoi Pho, Hue beef noodle soup (Bun Bo Hue), Cao Lau Hoi An, noodle with grilled food (Bun Thit Nuong), noodle soup with crab meat (Bun Rieu Cua), and vermicelli with shrimp paste (Bun Dau Mam Tom). If you travel south, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a paradise of street food. The city is filled with many street vendors serving many kinds of noodles. Oftentimes, people appreciate the Saigon rule that “the more crowded the eatery is, the better the food and the price are.” Saigon nightlife and street food tour on a scooter is an interesting package for foreigners to go for a drive in Saigon streets and eat like the Saigonese.

Special Vietnamese Eating Habits to Note

First of all, they have three major meals a day, but each comes with no fixed time. The major course must have rice, most of the time. And, people in the countryside eat very early. The frequently-consumed breakfast items are Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh Mi), beef noodles (Pho), and sticky rice (Xoi). Hence, try any of these options in your morning in the country and say how it is. Next, if you go on a group tour with other travelers in Vietnam, you should expect to see that food is often served in a single bowl or tray, from which food will be shared. Sharing a meal is a common concept in the country. And, if there are elders in the group, the younger people should respect their seniors by letting them take the food first.

Going on a food tour in Vietnam, you’re likely to taste the fried, stewed, and steamed dishes as they are the most common cooking methods. In that sense, let’s savor the fried fish, steamed chicken, and stewed pork. Besides, veggies are often boiled or stir-fried with garlic. When it comes to dining time, people would not stress any strict rules or rituals. Therefore, the homestay culinary experience will be enjoyable and cheerful. It’s comfortable to talk during mealtime, and the common topics would be the weather, work, school, or news. What’s more, take an opportunity to figure out the Vietnamese fish sauce – the irreplaceable condiment in almost any meal.

Discover Saigon street food

Vietnam owns a beautiful culinary culture that can enchant foodies nationwide and worldwide. Do not miss the roadside food stalls serving the hot dishes while you can also taste the top food included in the tour, not to mention the interesting services of a cooking class, the visit to tourist attractions, and the chance to communicate with the locals. Each step you go on Vietnam food tour in 2021, there is always a good chance to find a yummy dish.

Caters to Allergies and Vegetarians ?

Yes, this Saigon Food Tour menu was built to cater to food allergies and vegetarians in the back of our minds. We can change just a few things so that guests can still have the same experience as everyone else without meat or whatever food they may be allergic to.

Who is this Tour for?

Everybody! We created this experience to be a comfortable but unique experience that is suitable for all ages and types of travelers. The seating is comfortable enough at all of the restaurants featured on the tour and the vibe is completely relaxed and fun.

Taste of Vietnam Highlights

The Taste of Vietnam Saigon, food tour menu, is special and showcases many dishes you haven’t heard of. In two of the locations on the tour, we even had the chance to cook a bit with our customers.

Big Eats & Small Seats

Afternoon saigon street food tour.

1 pm-5 pm Every Afternoon

  • Child (8-12): $45.00

A street food tour catered to those who want to feel like Anthony Bourdain in Ho Chi Minh, immersing themselves into tiny and unique locations for local cuisine that will blow your socks off.

The menu features what we would consider more classic or popular street foods from Vietnam. The focus is on deliciousness, but we aren’t worried about comfort, hence the “small seats” in the name. This tour isn’t for everyone; if you feel uncomfortable spending 20-30 minutes at a time in super small chairs, this would not be the best experience for you.

food tours vietnam

Unfortunately, catering to vegetarians or allergies on this tour is not possible. The street food vendors only offer one dish, and we can’t provide what we think would be an acceptable and delicious substitute for guests with food restrictions.

Who is this tour for?

The name of the tour says it all: Big Eats Small Seats. We will be getting extremely local with our street food on this tour, which means it would be best for customers who feel comfortable in really small stools. This is the “Anthony Bourdain” type experience for those foodies who want to get into the mix in Saigon. If that doesn’t sound nice to you, I recommend the Taste of Vietnam Tour.

tour Highlights

This is a local afternoon Saigon food tour, which means the traffic is much easier during the time of the day to navigate. We can cover a ton of ground in a short amount of time, which gives a better insight into the layout of Ho Chi Minh City. This tour features some of our favorite street food vendors, like our Bun Thit Nuong lady, whom we have known for many years and an absolute treat of a woman. We also offer delicious seafood from one of the best food stops in all of district 10!

A Chef’s Tour

Private street food tour.

5 pm – 10 pm (Book in Advance)

  • Adult: $150.00

This is a private street food-focused tour with an ad-hoc menu using our local food knowledge to build a tasting menu that fits you. This tour is fast-paced and meant to show off as much food as possible in a 5-hour time frame.

Our Chef Tour Menu is always different and based on our customer’s experience with Vietnamese food. We will always inquire about anything they might want to try while in Saigon. We do our best to search out what we think you would enjoy during the night and give you an experience catered just for you.

cater to vegetarians or food allergies?

Unfortunately, catering to vegetarians for this experience would be extremely tricky. The street food vendors only offer one dish and it isn’t possible for us to provide what we think would be an acceptable and delicious substitute for guests with food restrictions.

Who is this Tour For?

This tour is for extreme foodies that want something private and a bit more in-depth. We will cover everything from street food to small local eateries during this tour if you want. The menu and route are completely made up as we go along and catered to the customers on the tour. Buyer beware, we will completely stuff you to the gills on this tour trying to show you all of the food in Saigon!

Tour Highlights

The Chef’s Tour is the exact tour that I would want for myself when traveling to a new city for a short period of time. We are willing to show off whatever we think you might enjoy, whether that is a menu of classic Vietnamese dishes or being challenged with unique flavors you might not love but are excited to try! With the extra hour on this tour as well, we have a chance to take a bit more time to eat at some places I might not get to on a more time-restricted tour.

Which Saigon FOOD TOUR is Right for You?

Ho Chi Minh City is unique because we have two styles of food tours around the city.

The first and most popular option is the Motorbike Food Tour .

Zipping in the traffic of Ho Chi Minh City with a local guide is a thrill. Saigon unfolds and opens up as local guides teach you about culture and sights while cruising on the motorbike.

The other option is a walking food tour , which can compensate for its lack of thrill with patience and depth while we explore the city on foot.

If you are nervous about being on a motorbike or want something more budget-friendly, this is a great option to learn more and eat some great Vietnamese food.

Ho Chi minh Food Tours by Motorbike

Our Motorbike Food Tours have similar aspects: We provide pick up and drop off in the city center. Our team is all English Speaking Driver Guides who are highly trained in safety and customer service.

A dedicated Support Team helps our tours run smoothly like butter. Digital Photos of your Tour are sent to you within 24 hours after your tour. One of the most important parts of the tour is that all Food and Drink are Included in the Price . Every tour has accident insurance coverage .

We can easily accommodate Vegetarians and Food Allergies with advance notice on our Taste of Vietnam food tour. Our tours are suitable for the whole family, and we offer special pricing for children 7 and under riding with their parents and a discount for kids 7-12 years old.

The difference between our Ho Chi Minh Food Tours will be Menu and style. So, look at each sample menu to see what type of menu and setting you prefer for your trip.

If you are looking for a Street food-focused tour, our Big Eats & Small Seats and Chef’s Tour will be your best option. If you want to try some Tasty Vietnamese Food in a fun, comfortable setting, our Taste of Vietnam Night Food Tour will be right up your alley.

Ho Chi Minh Food Tour Q&A

Budget is important and student tours could be appropriate for certain travelers on a tight budget. You should know that these tours are more of a language exchange for students rather than a real tour company. This is a good thing for the students, but as professional tour operators, we think they are too risky for a traveler, especially when riding on someone’s motorbike.

The difference in price vs our tour isn’t even comparable if you get sick from dirty street food or have a minor accident which would cost way more in travel time lost or medical expenses.

This is why our price is slightly higher. You can read more about our pricing here .

This is going to depend on the locations chosen by your tour operator.

Cheap street food and dirty street food go hand in hand with each other.

That’s why we only use restaurants and vendors that we know and trust. We eat at these food locations multiple times before considering offering them to our guests.

If there is any slight inkling that the food is not prepared in a safe way, we don’t offer it on our tours.

So, yes, The food on our tour is safe because we understand food safety. Our owner, Mr. Fredrick, has been certified in Food Safety in the US as required by law as a Chef.

We do not recommend for travelers just eat any food off of the street unless they know what you are looking for in terms of the quality of the vendor.

You can read more about where we eat on the tour , for more information.

Our Taste of Vietnam tour at night offers food from mostly small family-owned Vietnamese restaurants. The food stops on this gastronomic tour are not only about having unique and delicious food tastings but also the ambiance of our food stops.

Our other tours focus more on street food vendors, although it’s still a good mix with some shops. We recommend the Taste of Vietnam to anyone concerned about not wanting to eat street food.

There are 2 different types of locations that we use on our food tours.

No matter what type of food location we use, Food safety is always our first concern!

The first type of location we use is Street Food Vendors. This is often imagined as a small lady serving one dish on the side of the road or in the alley with small plastic chairs for seating. These types of food tour locations can be exciting for those looking to dive into street food culture.

This type of food tour has been allocated as our Big Eats & Small Seats tour that we operate every afternoon. Our Chef’s Tour also offers Street Food Vendors. Many customers absolutely love exploring Saigon’s culinary scene through street food vendors, but we understand it isn’t for everyone.

The second type of Vietnamese food we explore on our ho chi minh food tours is small shops or local restaurants. These small family-owned operations offer tasty and delicious Vietnamese food but a more comfortable atmosphere than street food vendors with small seats.

Shops like these with actual kitchens available in the restaurant are able to serve some interesting Vietnamese food that isn’t found at street food vendors in Ho Chi Minh City. Our Taste of Vietnam Tour is catered to using these types of shops, and this tour is recommended for absolutely anyone looking for a fun night out on a Ho Chi Minh Food Tour.

Absolutely, we can accommodate Vegetarians and Allergies on almost every food tour we offer.

The world has changed for the better with many more people reducing or avoiding meat consumption. Vietnam has a rich culinary background of vegetarian variations of their classic dishes, we do our very best to bring that taste to vegetarians on our tours. We highly recommend our Big Eats & Small Seats and Taste of Vietnam tours for Vegetarians. We have a dedicated support team that helps us arrange vegetarian options for our customers so they can participate in the group with no hiccups.

We can accommodate almost every allergy on our food tours. The only allergy that we can not control is MSG. It is commonly used in so many things in Vietnam that it is just impossible to guarantee on a tour.

Yes, our motorbike food tour is safe.

We spend a lot of time in our hiring and training process for all of our guides. Safety is always our #1 priority and we will never allow anyone to drive our customers if they show any signs of not being a strong enough driver who is capable of navigating the streets and escorting our guests. We personally ride with every single one of our drivers to ensure that this is true before we allow any guests on their motorbikes.

To help ease minds, we also include a $2500 accident insurance policy for all customers on any of our Motorbike Food Tours! We have never had to use it, but it’s important for every customer to double-check with whoever they are booking with that they are covered.

We are not the cheapest tour option in Ho Chi Minh City, but that also isn’t our strategy. We are passionate about being the best, which costs a little bit more, but we think it’s worth it when we compare ourselves to the other guys.

Here is the real deal, behind-the-scenes pricing that goes on for food tours like us.

Back of the Bike Tours doesn’t have young untrained students picking up customers and shuffling them between random cheap street food vendors. We have set menus and routes that guarantee a great experience for our guests operated by a whole team of trained professional drivers and support crew.

Every single tour has a Tour leader, which is a manager for the tour. These experienced team members relay important tour information to our guests while ensuring our tours are consistently providing excellent customer service and hospitality.

We operate with 1 support team member for every 4 guests on a tour. These team members are crucial to having a smooth tour but also providing safety for not only our guests but our drivers. Which as their employer, we do our very best to guarantee our driver’s safety and comfort in our unique work environment.

Salaries for our leaders, drivers, and support team are some of the highest in the industry, which goes directly against the grain in a niche filled with student drivers offering cheap motorbike tours in exchange for learning English.

A motorbike food tour in Vietnam shouldn’t be operated by unskilled, untrained, and underpaid students, it’s just dangerous, illegal, and unprofessional in our opinion.

We work very hard to put together a menu that is delicious and interesting, which I believe given our success has been the strategy that most travelers appreciate. This means our food isn’t as inexpensive as many would think.

Yes, there is cheaper food that we could use on our tours, but our passion is serving delicious, tasty, and interesting food which doesn’t always coincide with inexpensive. We also concern ourselves a lot about location, “Will our guests feel comfortable in this setting?”, which means we will opt for a pricier location if the atmosphere is great.

Besides the obvious operation costs like food and tour salaries, we have a full-time office team who manage bookings, guest relations, and human resources for all of our drivers, leaders, and support team.

Since we are a legally fully licensed tour operator, we have to pay taxes, license fees, office rent, employee and customer insurance, and as you can imagine the list goes on.

Comparing our prices to food tours across the globe, we believe that our tours are extremely competitive, especially when taking into account that our motorbike food tours are all-inclusive(including beer and cider) trips with a 1:1 guest-to-guide ratio.

We hope this sheds some light on the price of our motorbike food tours in Ho Chi Minh City and also that we are a company that cares about its team members, and guests, and provides the best possible experience we can on all of our tours.

We have our booking page here listed with all of the tours and excursions we offer. Select the date and number of guests you are looking for to add the tour to your cart! After the basic information is collected for the booking, please submit it. We get back to every booking in less than 24 hours all year except for Tet Holiday.

Once your booking has been submitted, please check your email to provide additional information so we can get you covered by our accident insurance. After collecting your information and a deposit(if necessary for private and larger bookings), we will get your tour confirmed right away.

Have you ever stopped to think about the story behind that bowl of pho ? The depth of Hanoi’s food culture is as vast as the Red River flowing through it.

Hanoi’s culinary scene is like a living history book. Its diverse flavors are a reflection of the city’s past – marked by Chinese, French, and Southeast Asian influences.

Each wave of influence has left a unique stamp on Hanoi’s food, transforming it into the flavorful feast that we relish today.

From the hearty Pho that combines Chinese-style noodles with local spices, to the iconic Banh Mi sandwich which is a delicious blend of French baguette with Vietnamese fillings, Hanoi’s food is a beautiful fusion of cultures.

In the North, where Hanoi is located, the food is more traditional and subtle in flavors compared to the food in the southern and central regions. This variance makes dining in Hanoi a unique experience, as it allows you to taste a piece of Vietnam’s rich and layered food history.

Essential Ingredients in Hanoi Cuisine

Handfuls of Fresh Mint, Cilantro, and Basil

Now, let’s take a closer look at the building blocks of Hanoi’s mouthwatering dishes. Rice and noodles form the backbone of most meals, providing a comforting base for a variety of toppings and sauces.

But it’s the herbs and spices that truly make Hanoi’s food stand out. Imagine handfuls of fresh mint, cilantro, and basil that add a vibrant freshness to every dish. And don’t forget the piquant chillies, tangy lime, and the unmistakable fish sauce, that lend a distinct depth of flavor.

Then there’s the star of Hanoi’s food scene – the humble street-side BBQ . Grilled meats, especially pork, are marinated with traditional Vietnamese spices, resulting in succulent, smoky bites that will make your taste buds sing!

Iconic Dishes to Try on Your Hanoi Food Tour

Pho, oh glorious Pho! Imagine this: you’re seated on a tiny stool at a street-side stall, steam rising from a bowl of soup in front of you.

You catch a whiff of the aroma – it’s rich and complex, a symphony of s immered beef bones, star anise, cloves, and cinnamon . Thin slices of tender beef or chicken adorn the top, while soft rice noodles swim below.

You take your first sip and boom – flavor explosion! This, folks, is Pho, Vietnam’s treasured noodle soup and Hanoi’s culinary icon.

Bun Cha

Bun Cha is another Hanoi staple you simply must try! Picture grilled pork patties and belly served with a tangy dipping sauce, fresh herbs, and rice noodles .

It’s a harmonious balance of sweet, salty, and smoky flavors that dance on your palate.

Ah, the Banh Mi, a testament to the fusion of Vietnamese and French cuisines. Picture a crusty French baguette , sliced open and filled with layers of cold cuts , pickled veggies , coriander , chili , pâté , and a swipe of mayonnaise . Each bite delivers a delightful crunch and a burst of flavors that are surprisingly complex yet comforting.

These iconic dishes are the heart and soul of Hanoi cuisine. Savouring them is like stepping into the essence of Hanoi itself – rich, diverse, and undeniably delicious.

As you embark on your Hanoi food tour, let each bite tell you a story, and let the flavors of Hanoi become memories you’ll cherish long after your journey. Happy feasting!

An Immersive Experience: Hanoi Cooking Classes

The sizzle of a hot pan, the chop-chop-chop of the knife against a wooden board, the aroma of fresh herbs and spices in the air… that’s right, we’re diving into the delightful world of Hanoi cooking classes . Who says the fun ends after tasting the food? Let’s kick it up a notch!

Learning to cook local dishes isn’t just about filling your stomach (although that’s a great bonus!). It’s about experiencing the culture in the most hands-on way possible. It’s about understanding the locals’ love and respect for their ingredients, the time-honored techniques they employ, and the stories behind each dish.

You’ll come away not just with a belly full of good food, but also a deeper appreciation of Vietnamese culture, a new skill, and hey, maybe even some new friends!

Cultural Etiquette to Keep in Mind on Your Hanoi Food Tour

Oh, the excitement of trying out new foods and immersing yourself in a foreign culture! But let’s put on the brakes for just a second.

Remember, we’re guests in Hanoi, and it’s super important to be mindful of the local customs and manners. It’s not only polite, but it also enhances the authenticity of your experience. So, let’s dig into some do’s and don’ts for your Hanoi food tour!

🍜 Vietnamese Dining Norms and Expectations

You’re probably itching to slurp that Pho, right? Hold on, buddy! In Vietnamese culture, there’s a bit more to it. First, if you’re dining in a group, always wait for the elders to begin eating first . It’s a sign of respect. Oh, and about the chopsticks – never leave them sticking upright in your bowl; it’s considered bad luck.

And yes, slurping is totally okay ! It’s actually seen as a compliment to the chef. So, go ahead and make some noise!

📸 Respecting Local Customs during the Tour

Taking photos of your food is fine, but remember to be mindful of the people around you. Not everyone wants to be in your snapshot. Always ask for permission if you’re taking a picture that includes locals or other tourists. And if they say no, respect that.

Also, when you’re navigating through the bustling streets of Hanoi, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle. But remember to keep your voice down , especially in the early morning or late evening. Many people live right above the shops and restaurants in the Old Quarter, so let’s avoid waking them up!

Lastly, remember the golden rule of travel (and life in general): treat others the way you’d want to be treated. Show respect, be polite, and keep an open mind . You’re here to learn, explore, and enjoy!

Keep these tips in mind, and you’re set to have a culturally respectful and unforgettable food tour in Hanoi!

Practical Tips for Your Hanoi Food Tour

Embarking on a food tour in Hanoi is a guaranteed fun-filled adventure. To ensure that your journey is as smooth as possible, here are some handy tips and advice that’ll keep you one step ahead.

⏲️ Best Time to Go

When’s the best time to explore Hanoi’s food scene? Well, there isn’t a wrong time really! Hanoi has a tropical climate, which means it’s pretty warm all year round. However, for cooler weather, consider visiting between October and December when the temperatures are more moderate.

If you’re a fan of Pho (who isn’t?), consider an early morning tour. The locals believe it’s best served for breakfast. If you’re an evening owl, try the Bun Cha, usually enjoyed during lunchtime, or the street barbecues that pop up at dusk!

😋 Health and Safety

Hanoi’s street food is tantalizing, but do keep an eye out for hygiene . Stick to busy stalls where the food turnover is high – it’s a good indication the food is fresh. And don’t forget to stay hydrated ; carrying a bottle of water is always a smart idea.

If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, make sure to let your tour guide know in advance. The good news is, Vietnamese cuisine is quite accommodating to various diets, with numerous vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available.

🍴 Navigating the Hanoi Food Scene

Most locals in Hanoi are friendly and willing to help, even if there’s a language barrier. It helps to learn a few Vietnamese phrases though, such as ‘Cảm ơn’ (Thank you) and ‘Tôi muốn đặt…’ (I would like to order…).

In terms of currency, Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND) . It’s useful to have some small bills for street food vendors. As for tipping, it’s not a common practice in Vietnam. However, if you feel the service was exceptional, feel free to leave a small tip .

And there you have it! With these practical tips, you’re ready to dive into the vibrant and diverse culinary scene of Hanoi. Happy tasting!

WELCOME TO HA FOOD TOURS

I’m Ha, like the website’s name:  “Ha” Food Tours  (hafoodtours.com). Having worked as a tour guide for many years, I’ve come to appreciate that besides stunning landscapes, the local cuisine is a major draw for tourists. After each tour, I make sure my guests get to experience the diverse flavors of our cuisine. Interestingly, I was the first to conceptualize and establish  Hanoi Food Tours  in the old quarter.

That’s why I created this small, specialized company solely focused on organizing  Hanoi Food Tours . Our aim is to recruit individuals who share a passion for our city and train them to be knowledgeable guides, revealing a unique aspect of Hanoi’s charm:  its culture and food . Following our guides, you’ll explore every hidden corner of the Old Quarter, sampling local delicacies and engaging with friendly locals along the way.

Self-Guided Vietnamese-Owned Food & Drink Tour

Banh mi, phở, and more.

Last Updated: Tuesday, May 14, 2024 1:47 PM by Lauren Saizan

The Vietnamese food scene in New Orleans is vast, with family owned and operated restaurants in every part of the city. Chef Anh Luu knows this firsthand as a born-and-raised Vietnamese New Orleanian. She owns and operates the pop-up Xanh NOLA , which has an eye for creative cuisine like the pho quesadilla with grilled steak, cheese, phở noodles, green onion, hoisin, sriracha, and Thai basil sauce on the side. Luu, alongside chefs Cristina Quackenbush and Haley Vanvleet, plans to open the Vietnamese-Filipino fusion restaurant Tatlo in the French Quarter in summer 2024. Watch the video below for the chef’s tour of Vietnamese cuisine in the city and find more spots for delicious Vietnamese food in New Orleans below.

52 tourists hospitalized for food poisoning at Vietnam beach town

The Binh Thuan Department of Health on Monday said the tourist group, from southern Vietnam, stayed at a coastal resort in Phan Thiet. Their trip was organized by a local tour company.

They ate dinner at the Hong Vinh restaurant on Sunday, about 4 km from where they stayed. The menu included oysters, crabs, fish, squids and other food items. The group returned to the hotel to rest at around 9:30 p.m. Some of them went to the beach for a night party, ordering shrimps and other food items.

By Monday morning, some people began to display symptoms like stomachache, nausea and diarrhea. Several were hospitalized. The first case was taken to the Ham Tien medical station in the city at around 7:30 a.m., and more came to the Mui Ne area clinic and the Binh Thuan general hospital.

As of Monday afternoon, 52 had been hospitalized. The initial diagnosis was food poisoning.

All patients were conscious and stable. By the afternoon, 32 people had been discharged, and 20 more are expected to be discharged on Tuesday.

The Binh Thuan health department is verifying information and taking samples to figure out the cause of the incident.

Several cases of mass food poisoning have bene reported in several localities, including Nha Trang, Dong Nai and HCMC, lately. Experts warn of heightened risks of food poisoning due to high temperatures, especially for street food.
