Unofficially, it’s “The Foozer Tour,” the double-headlining pairing of the Foo Fighters and Weezer, two rock bands that share ironic senses of humor but little else.
No telling which will headline here Wednesday at KeyArena. The two have been taking turns closing the show, but the bands are taking a week off and will resume the tour tomorrow in Long Beach, Calif. “Who’s on first?” We won’t know until showtime.
The union of the two bands is a smart move because both attract similar fans and have albums on the charts right now. Joining forces means bigger audiences for both and makes business sense in this time of downturn in concert-ticket sales.
When the tour was announced this summer, the Foo Fighters were about to release an ambitious two-CD album, “In Your Honor,” with the discs described as “one loud, one not so loud,” i.e. one electric, one acoustic.

With four platinum albums in a row and two consecutive Grammys for best rock album, the Foos’ release seemed primed to be a big hit. But record buyers felt otherwise. Although the album did go gold (500,000 units sold), it quickly slid down the charts. After 17 weeks, it’s No. 103 in the Billboard 200 album chart.
Meanwhile, Weezer’s “Beverly Hills” single, a catchy tune about not fitting in — a common theme for geeky lead singer Rivers Cuomo — has become one of the biggest hits of the year. Its success has kept the album it came from, “Make Believe,” in the Top 100 for 22 weeks. This week, it’s at 88 in Billboard.
Weezer already came through town in April, playing the Moore Theatre in only the second show of their first tour in three years. The tight, fun, joyful set delighted the capacity crowd, especially the songs “Buddy Holly,” “Undone — The Sweater Song” and “Hash Pipe.”
information, 206-684-7200, www.seattlecenter.com , www.foofighters.com , www.weezer.com , www.hothotheat.com ).
You could tell “Beverly Hills” was going to be a hit from the reaction it got — and that was before the sexy video, filmed at the Playboy Mansion, came out.
Weezer’s humor is gentle, shy, even cute (in the case of “Buddy Holly”), while the Foo Fighters’ is more edgy, grimy and sexy. Lead singer Dave Grohl always seems to have a smirk on his face. He takes nothing seriously. His sense of fun and abandon translates to the stage in intense, thrilling performances. He shreds his voice with his screaming vocals. Don’t expect any “not-so-loud” songs in concert.
Grohl has a local connection, having been the drummer in Nirvana. After Kurt Cobain’s suicide in 1994, Grohl recorded the first Foo Fighters album, playing all the instruments himself.
When it became a hit, he hired Seattle musicians Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, the bassist and drummer, respectively, of Sunny Day Real Estate. Guitarist Pat Smear, from California, filled out the lineup. Mendel is the only one still in the band. Taylor Hawkins is now the drummer, and Chris Shiflett plays bass.
Foo Fighters is nothing like Nirvana. Cobain was a true artist, and his band explored deep psychological terrain, often expressed abstractly. But the Foo Fighters are a straight-ahead, nonchallenging, traditional, commercial rock band — verse, chorus, verse; simple sentences, simple rhymes.
Wait a minute! We do know who goes on first. Added for this leg of the tour is Hot Hot Heat, the young, ambitious Vancouver B.C.-based band whose new album is “Elevator.”

Foo Fighters Recall Stripper Tour Prank On Weezer During 'Foozer' Tour
By Taylor Fields
January 29, 2021
For a touring band, there's nothing quite like a good story from the road, and Foo Fighters has plenty of them.
After rocking the stage at this year's iHeartRadio ALTer EGO presented by Capital One, Foo Fighters talked about a fond memory from touring with Weezer , involving a hilarious prank while on a previous tour together, 2005's "Foozer" tour. Right before looking back on Weezer's 2019 "Buddy Holly" ALTer EGO Performance, Dave Grohl explained that going on tour with another band always yields an "end of the tour prank," and recalled inviting a group of male strippers to get up on stage with Rivers Cuomo and crew during their last show of the tour.
Grohl explained, "Weezer came out right around the same time as Foo Fighters. [We] toured with them a bunch, the 'Foozer' tour. We did this tour, and it was a long tour too. When you go on tour with a band, the last show is always like, 'OK, someone's gonna pull a fast one,' like you do the last show of the tour prank on them. And we had a bunch of male strippers jump up on their stage, and strip for them."
Dave added, "They sent us, actually, a thank you, which was a picture of the strippers on stage with them, and then a thong with a sock stuffed in it."
This poster now proudly hangs in their studio.
Foo Fighters kicked off this year's iHeartRadio ALTer EGO with a high-energy, head-bang worthy set featuring new music from their upcoming album, Medicine at Midnight , like "Shame Shame" and "Waiting on a War," in addition to fan favorites "Everlong" and "The Pretender."
Foo Fighters are set to release their tenth full-length album, Medicine at Midnight , on February 5th. The new album follows 2017's Concrete and Gold , and showcases nine new songs including "Shame Shame," "Waiting on a War" and "No Son of Mine."
