How to travel France by canal (without going overboard)

Transport and tranquility are usually mutually exclusive, but not if you book a houseboat and cruise along France 's canals and navigable rivers. You can stop at your whim to pick up fresh produce from a local market, dine at a village restaurant or glide by a local château by bicycle.

There are thousands of kilometers of rivers and canals that link together in a vast web touching much of the country and allowing access to the surrounding seas. Changes in altitude are taken care of by a system of écluses (locks) and boats range from self-hire houseboats to luxury hotel barges.

There are hundreds of equally wonderful canal and river routes, dotted with small houses where the lock keepers used to live (and some still do). Below is just a sample of what lies ahead. Additional world-class routes include the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, a link between Paris and Alsace and Germany via the Rhine, and the 360km-long Canal de Nantes à Brest in Brittany .

Boat on Canal du Midi, France

Canal du Midi

Stretching for 241km between Toulouse and Sète , the Canal du Midi is one of the great waterways of southern France. Completed in 1681 at the behest of Louis XIV and classified as a World Heritage site since 1996, the canal was designed to provide a trading route between major French ports. Combined with the Canal de Garonne, it forms part of the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal of the Two Seas), which enables boats to travel all the way from the Atlantic (near Bordeaux) to the Mediterranean.

It’s a work of art as much as engineering, lined with stately plane trees, puttering houseboats and gorgeous riverside towns. You can stroll or pedal along the towpaths as you stop along the canal’s route, or visit its cities – Toulouse, Agde, Minerve, Béziers , Narbonne, Carcassonne and Sète.

It’s also worth stopping at the Musée Canal du Midi in St-Ferréol, which explores the history of the waterway and the life of its chief engineer, Paul Riquet.

Canal de Garonne

With 53 locks, this serene canal falls from the junction with the Canal du Midi at Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe at the Garonne river. The Garonne then lets out to the Bay of Biscay just beyond wonderful Bordeaux , a jolly stop for its gorgeous architecture and wine aplenty . Or, take a day trip from the boat to Sauternes for its sweet and white wines, or Roquefort, for its world-famous cheese . Another fascinating stop along the way is Moissac, a large riverside town, partly on an “island” formed between the Tarn and the Garonne Canal. Its crowning glory is the Unesco-listed Abbaye St-Pierre , a monumental abbey church.

Canal de Bourgogne

Canal boating between Bourgogne vineyards really can’t be beat. Burgundy's 1200km of placid waterways include the Rivers Yonne, Saône and Seille and a network of canals, including the Canal de Bourgogne, the Canal du Centre, the Canal Latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Nivernais, which are detailed below.

The spectacular 242km Canal de Bourgogne connects the river Saône in the south at Saint-Jean-de-Losne, with the river Yonne at Laroche-Migennes – which in turn connects to the Seine if you want to continue on to Paris. Highlights Include , of course, touring the regions’ magnificent vineyards and sampling the wines, as well as visiting cities like Dijon and Beaune . West of Dijon, along and around the Canal de Bourgogne, the Pays d'Auxois is a rolling land of mustard fields, wooded hills and escarpments dotted with fortified hilltop towns, including Semur-en-Auxois. Tucked into this verdant landscape are a pair of exceptional historical sites, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the MuséoParc Alésia historical museum.

Boating near Rochers du Saussois on the Canal du Nivernais

Canal du Nivernais

Originally constructed for moving firewood from the Morvan’s forests to Paris, the peaceful Canal du Nivernais  crosses the Yonne river valley , sometimes merging with the river itself and connecting the Loire with the Seine. A top spot along the way, the ancient city of Auxerre dates back to Gallo-Roman times and now curves beautifully along the Yonne, with the magnificent Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre towering overhead.

You can also tour the vineyards – or simply stock the wines of the region – with Chablis being its reigning queen.

Loire Valley canals

A batch of bitty canals interlink between Burgundy and the châteaux-laden Loire Valley . They include the Canal du Centre, Canal latéral à la Loire, and the Canal de Briare.

Midway between Dijon and Lyon , Burgundy's southernmost département , Saône-et-Loire, is an inviting land of rolling green fields criss-crossed by hedgerows and dotted with indigenous Charolais beef cattle. The Canal du Centre and some fabulous bike paths meander through Saône-et-Loire's forests and pastureland.

During the region's medieval heyday it was home to the largest church in all of Christendom, the magnificent abbey of Cluny . These days it's a sleepier place, but pretty châteaux and little-known Romanesque chapels still sit around almost every bend, hinting at Saône-et-Loire's long history and making this a delightful area for day trips.

Other regional highlights include wines galore: from the wine-growing villages around Mâcon to Sancerre, which produce some of France's finest whites – taste tests abound.

Shorter hops and day trips on France's canals

If you’re not able to do a full canal cruise, you can also hop aboard a small day trip boat or punt the day away from French cities laced with canals, like Colmar . For example, boat cruises run along the Garonne in Toulouse from the Quai de la Daurade; in summer, some boats also travel onto the Canal du Midi. The two main companies are Les Bateaux Toulousains and Toulouses Croisières .

In the Dordogne Valley  you can go river boating from La Roque Gageac aboard a flat-bottomed gabarre with Gabarres Norbert .

Brittany, France - Abbey de Bon Repos on the Nantes Brest Canal, Cotes d'Armor, Brittany France Europe

Cycling the canals

Most boats have bikes on board or can arrange cycling day trips. With a vast network of cycling paths, the French canal towpaths are pure two-wheeling joy. Voies vertes (green ways) stretch for thousands of kilometres along old canal towpaths and are also open to walkers and horse riders, and many sections are paved to ensure a silky-smooth ride. Many connect to véloroutes – designated cycling paths .

You can cycle on or very near the chemin de halage (towpath) of the Canal de Bourgogne all the way from Dijon to Migennes (225km). The section from Montbard to Tonnerre (65km) passes by Château d'Ancy-le-Franc ; between Montbard and Pouilly-en-Auxois (58km), spurs go to the Abbaye de Fontenay and Semur-en-Auxois.

Similarly, peaceful towpaths along the Canal du Midi (check out Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo ) link the Atlantic with the Mediterranean via the canals.

Tips for canal travel in France

How to book a french canal trip.

Usually, companies, like Barge Lady Cruises , are brokers that then connect you to the outfit owning the boat or boats. Things to consider are:

  • the size of the boat;
  • whether there will be a skipper on board, and what other staff, like a cook or steward;
  • how many staterooms will there be (and thus people you may share with);
  • what do they offer in the way of day trips and how customizable are they?

...or book a luxury barge cruise instead

Levels can become quite luxe, with your own private chef and bespoke food, drink and day trips. Smaller luxury boats can have as few as two staterooms, with a maximum of four guests, which are perfect for friends or family who want a private boat. A top purveyor in the field is Belmond , with its smaller boat, Allouette on the Canal du Midi, or larger ones like Fleur de Lys in Burgundy.

How to rent a canal boat

If you’re up for piloting yourself, you can hire a boat. They generally accommodate from two to 12 passengers and are fully outfitted with bedding and cooking facilities. Anyone over 18 can pilot a riverboat, but first-time skippers are given a short instruction session so they qualify for a carte de plaisance (temporary cruising permit). The speed limit is 6km/h on canals and 8km/h on rivers. It’s important to read up on the route you will be taking to learn how to handle the locks and other tricks of the waterway. Except in July and August, you can often rent over a weekend.

You can also traverse the waterways by sailboat, but you must unstep (take down) the mast to do so.

Rental agencies abound. They include the following:

France Afloat – Anglophone canal-boat specialist in France, based in Vermenton, 25km southeast of Auxerre. This British-owned, family-run enterprise rents boats and provides advice for trips on France's inland waterways, including the Yonne River, the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais.

Locaboat Holidays – based in Joigny, 27km northwest of Auxerre – has been renting boats throughout France since 1977. Burgundian destinations for their self-guided explorations include the Canal de Bourgogne, Canal du Centre, Canal du Nivernais and the Yonne and Seine Rivers.

Where to find a map of France's canals

Waterway books with detailed maps are a must. Excellent guides include Breil and Imray , or check out the website French Waterways for loads of info and maps on the country’s canals and waterways.

Rental companies offer boats from late March to mid-November (canals close for repairs in winter). Advance reservations are essential for holiday periods, over long weekends and in July and August, especially for larger boats. The best bet is to go during the shoulder seasons (May and June or September), when the weather is fine but wait times are shorter at the locks, and crowds fewer.

Great. Unfortunately on the second day, we had trouble managing the boat. We called the support and soon a good technician arrived to solve the problem. Mr Lupato said we probably hit something underwater, damaging our rudder. Then, the navigation continued in a really relaxing and satisfying.

We had a wonderful stay on the Caligula boat (very comfortable!) from Digoin. Sailing all the way to Dompierre-sur-Besbre, we were amazed by the scenery, fascinated by the locks and touched by the kindness of the locals. We were lucky enough to be accompanied on part of our journey by several animals, including a beautiful heron. Thanks to the stops along the way, we discovered some typical villages. Last but not least, our little captain even had fun on the playgrounds we found along the way! We look forward to sailing with Les Canalous again.

We were able to spend a wonderful mini-week in Alsace on "our" Marion. A special part of this was the sympathetic and professional-competent care by the team of Les Canalous. Certainly, the Marion is a boat that has already a lot on the hump, but for our demands on a sea voyage completely sufficient. Many thanks and greetings to the team of Les Canalous in the base Port du Houillon.

I really enjoyed the week's stay, but the training time on the handling of the barge seems fair. This one was very comfortable, something to improve: The maintenance of the bikes. But it is in progress. I also need telescopic handles for the moorings. Getting Around France in Canal Boats- Everything You Need to Know

France is a beautiful country to vacation in. Filled with lush forests, beautiful rivers, and exquisite architecture, and a lot of hidden gems, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the most visited countries in the world . You want to make every second count in France, including travel time between popular destinations. This is where canal boating in France comes in.

France is unique in the sense that you can travel within the country by boat. Of course, you travel by train, bus, or even rent a car, but where’s the fun in that? Canal boats are a great means of transportation , and taking a French Canal Cruise can be an amazing experience . In this article, you’ll learn everything you need to know about getting around France in Canal boats!

A few basic tips about canal boating in France

channel france

With more than 100 canals and rivers, France is home to the largest river network in Europe . The French canal network stretches over 800 kilometers of navigable waterways which makes this country a perfect canal holiday destination. This will allow you to see France from a different perspective and you’ll soon realize why…

Organizing a canal boating vacation in France

canal boating in france

French cities are different. You can travel almost anywhere by boat. This is a different experience because everywhere else, you rent a car. Driving for hours at a time can get monotonous and stuffy. It gets old pretty quick, and half of your vacation time is spent in a metal box.

With a boat, you can let the gentle wind caress your hair as you slowly travel along the many waterways. Boats bypass the busy commute in the streets, so you spend less time stuck in traffic jams. They can easily travel to the countryside as well. You can jetty your boat and even spend the night in it. All in all, traveling by canal boat will make for a truly unique experience.

What if You Live in France?

canal

If you live in France and want to experience the country in a whole new way, then canal boats might just be the thing for you. France’s cities are filled with small rivers and canals. Having a boat of your own can make your life much easier.

There are many kinds of boats to choose from. Your needs may be daily or only occasionally. Finding the right boat is crucial because this is an investment. You can even search on the internet and look at various options as many websites feature canal boats for sale.

What if you are an international traveler?

colmar canal

This doesn’t change much. You still don’t require a license and you can rent a boat as easily as you can rent a car. However, for your own safety, you should learn some steering basics from the internet before you take your boat out. When it comes to mooring, you can generally moor anywhere, as long as you’re not causing an obstruction or disturbing wildlife. Most moorings are free but some charge between €10 and €50.

Passing through bridges and locks doesn’t require an additional charge. Additionally, most locks have keepers who speak English and can help you if you need assistance. Keep in mind that most locks are temporarily closed around lunchtime and lock keepers don’t work on Bank Holidays (May 1st, July 14th, and November 1st).

Why should you go Canal cruising in France?

canal

You may be wondering why you should go through all the trouble of getting a boat when you can simply use public transportation or rent a car. Renting a canal boat is not difficult at all.

Canal boats are readily available. They come in many different types, depending on your needs. You can either rent them or buy them outright if you are planning to live in France for a while.

Additionally, some canal boats provide all the comforts of home. These boats have a built-in bedroom, and you can sleep tied to the harbor. There is nothing like waking up in the morning and going to the local bread shop in the village you’re in to get breakfast.

Some boats are super luxurious and even have kitchens. You can cook your own food with fresh produce found in the local markets. Make it a special day for your loved one by cooking them a boat-cooked meal.

Renting canal boats in France is not expensive

paris seine cruise

Whether purchasing or renting, canal boats are not expensive. Summer is the busiest time of the year for canal boating in France, and naturally, prices go up, but even then, the cost per person with supplies will amount to about $100 per day. This is cheaper than some cars out there.

If you are traveling alone and wouldn’t mind some exercise, you can rent a small canoe and row your way through France. Canoes are really cheap as they don’t require fuel and are small in size. Rental companies have various drop-off points as well, so you don’t have to worry about going back to the same place to return them.

Boating Holiday Packages

france

Many tourism companies and travel agencies offer boating holiday packages as all-in-one deals. Everything from the boat to your provisions will be set up from before. All you have to do is show up.

These packages have recently increased in popularity and demand. However, it is always a good idea to do your own research. The boats these companies provide may not be to your liking. There are plenty of websites to look at boats online, and it does not take long. Don’t lose the liberty of choosing your own special boat.

French Canal Boating Tips

boat

Canal boating in France can be intimidating if it’s your first time using a canal boat. There are some things you should remember to make your journey easier.

Just like cars, in France, boats keep to the right of the waterway. French waterways are littered with tunnels, so the boats come with headlights. Always turn them on whenever entering a tunnel and use your horn when heading toward a tunnel. A speed limit applies on the water and is usually capped to 4 mph inland. Reduce your speed even more when approaching bridges.

If you are mooring (parking) in a busy spot, make sure there is space for other boats as well. Never moor close to bridges or bends, and always fasten the upstream rope first when mooring.

Whenever you jetty, make sure to tie your boat securely and double-check that you have done so. Tie both in the front and in the back. Always have someone steer when you are tying up the boat.

It’s recommended to keep extra fuel onboard just in case you run out. There is nothing worse than being stranded in the middle of the river because your boat ran out of juice. If you are canoeing, make sure to wear proper safety equipment.

Boating Holidays in France

Now that we covered some useful tips about canal boating in France, it’s time to show you some of the best places in France for canal cruising! In case you’re wondering what’s the best time to go canal boating in France, in my opinion, it is the spring but if you’re planning more activities while visiting France and would like to learn more about the different seasons in France, you can learn more about the different seasons of France before your trip.

Central France

burgundy canal digoin

One of the best places to start canal boating in France is the Loire Valley. It’s approximately 2 hours away from Paris and this river cruise crosses to the heart of the French countryside. The region is famous for its local produce, arts and crafts, and numerous historical sites. The two main bases in the region are Rogny, for Canal de Briare and Plagny for Canal Lateral a la Loire.

Another great place for canal boating in France is Burgundy , a region famous for delicious wine. The two biggest canals are Canal de Bourgogne which connects the Seine and Saone valleys and covers a distance of 242 kilometers and Canal du Nivernais that links the Seine Valley to the Loire Valley. The biggest bases in the region are Brienon and St. Florentin for Canal de Bourgogne and Vermenton and Vermenton for Canal du Nivernais.

Two more regions that are perfect for canal boating in France are Franche Comte (River Doubs), a region famous for its scenic countryside and historical towns and Alsace, one of the most beautiful mountainous regions in France. The biggest bases in Franche Comte are Port sur Saone (near Dijon) and Dole (near Lyon).

Western France

nantes brestcanal

When speaking of canal boating in France, Brittany is one of the first regions that comes to mind. It’s a fascinating historic region with a lot of medieval castles , cathedrals, and villages. The main bases in Brittany are Glénac at the Canal de Nantes a Brest and Sucé sur Erdre. Another great region for canal boating in Western France is Anjou. Anjou boasts a canal network that stretches over 300 kilometers and is perfect for beginners because it’s the region with the lowest number of locks. The main bases are Atlantique Laval at Canal La Mavenne, Grez Neuville at L’Oudon and Sablé sur Sarthe at La Sarthe.

South West France

canal de garonne

The most famous canal in this region is Canal de Garonne along the River Baise. The canal starts at Castets-en-Dorthe and meets Canal du Midi in Toulouse. You have to cross this canal to access the southern part of France but it’s also a relatively easy cruise (all locks along the way are automatic) and there are several great stops along the way.

Southern France

canal du midi

Southern France is the most popular region when it comes to canal boating in France and home to the two most popular canals; Canal du Midi and Canal du Camargue. Canal du Midi is probably the most famous canal in the world because it links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The biggest bases are Port Lauragais, near Toulouse, Capestang, near the medieval town of Carcassonne, and Le Somail, near Beziers.

Boating holidays are a step out of the ordinary and can lead to a wonderful experience. They capture the adventurous spirit and create memories that last a lifetime. So get behind that wheel, and be the Captain you always wanted to be!

We rented a canal boat in France about 15 years ago for 21 days. We went from near Bordeaux all the way to Arles on the Mediterranean. We did not want to do a circular trip, so we rented tree separate one-way trip going from northwest to southeast. It was one of the nicest trip we took and we've seen extensively almost all of the world.

Sounds amazing, Jean. I'm glad to hear this post brought back some nice memories :)

Burgundy is the perfect destination of slow tourism fans

If you explore Burgundy by canal boat you’ll pass through peaceful rural landscapes, carried along on the many waterways. On the banks are historic villages and fabulous works of engineering such as the Briare aqueduct. This waterways region lends itself to relaxation and daydreaming, as well as discovering delicious food and wine, and historic châteaux and abbeys. There’s so much to explore in Burgundy’s rural landscapes, steeped in natural heritage. Cruise between undulating countryside and wooded slopes as you get to know this waterways region, where the pace of boating holidays is perfectly slow. On board a comfortable Pénichette ® , beginners and more experienced sailors can enjoy gliding along at the pace of the water, on the Canal du Nivernais, Canal de Bourgogne or Canal Latéral à la Loire, heading south to join the Canal du Centre. Along the way are 200 locks marking the stages of the voyage, but as most of them are automatic, you can relax and enjoy your cruise in this canal boat paradise.

Enjoy a Burgundy canal cruise through the Loire Valley

Start your burgundy barge cruise from joigny.

There’s no better way to start your boating holiday through the heart of France than in the small commune town of Joigny. Sitting on the banks of the River Yonne, Joigny is the ideal beginning point and one that can take you in either direction of the Burgundy region. As Locaboat has a riverside marina base here, barge hire in France is made super simple. Taking a short train journey south from Paris will have you along the River Yonne banks in no time at all.

The town of Joigny itself is well worth a look before you begin your Burgundy barge trips . Known as a town of high piety and Catholicism, Joigny has a collection of early medieval churches that hold some of the most awe-inspiring religious iconography, including sculptures, stained glass and painting.

With the town of Joigny standing at a crossroads of two waterways, Canal de Bourgogne and Canal du Nivernais, boaters can choose the route that suits them best or even complete a loop of both. With so many channels to choose from, barging in Burgundy is some of the most rewarding water travel you can choose in France.

Canal boat hire along the Nivernais

Taking the route right from Joigny will lead you and your boat to the Canal du Nivernais. This man-made waterway joins two of the country’s most famous rivers, the Loire and the Seine. Starting from its most northerly point, a holidaymaker’s Burgundy cruise will first pass through the town of Auxerre, an intriguing starting point for the journey down the Canal du Nivernais. The town is one of the largest in Burgundy and makes for a great introduction to the canal as a whole.

The town is at the heart of the region’s Burgundy Winemaking industry and is a great place to sample a glass or two. Alongside the gastronomical allure, Auxerre is also home to the Abbey of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre, a former Benedictine monastery with some of the most ancient mural paintings in all of France.

Barging in Burgundy France will take you from Auxerre down the Canal du Nivernais and eventually to the commune of Corbigny. As another of Locaboat’s many French bases, Corbigny is not only the canal’s halfway point but can also be a great place to start your barge cruise in Burgundy if you wish to do so. Canal Nivernais boat hire here is just as easy as it would be further upriver. The town has its fair share of attractions, with Saint Léonard Abbaye taking centre stage. A classic music festival is also held here every year, and if your holiday coincides with this, you’re in luck.

When in Burgundy, France, canal cruise’s down the Canal du Nivernais are likely to end at the confluence of the Canal du Nivernais and the Loire River.

Burgundy canal holidays along Canal de Bourgogne

Taking the left spur from Joigny will take your canal boat hire in Burgundy along the region’s most iconic waterway, the Canal du Bourgogne. Running from the Yonne River junction to the Saône River junction in the south, the canal crosses many points of interest, and boats here have a similar status to a Canal du Midi boat rental . Beginning your Canal de Bourgogne journey at its northernmost point, you and your boat will eventually wind their way to the commune of Tanlay.

This unassuming small town commune’s stunning scenery is reason alone to moor here and enjoys this canalside town’s sights. The town is famous for its Château de Tanlay, an impressive chateau that defines the region and is visible from the canalside.

Constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries, the chateau’s breathtaking ceiling frescos are worth a stop here alone. Taking your canal boat through Burgundy , winding ever south along the Canal de Bourgogne, you will pass through some of the most iconic stretches of central France. This curving stretch of canal is home to fantastic Burgundy sights such as the Château d’Ancy-le-Franc, another awe-inspiring 16th-century château. You will also set eyes on the Abbaye de Fontenay, set back behind the small town of Marmagne. This immaculately preserved 12th-century monastery is one of the oldest and most complete Cistercian abbeys in all of Europe and rightly holds UNESCO status. Following the Canal de Bourgogne’s route further on will mean you finally arrive at the famous historical capital of Burgundy, Dijon. Known also as a gastronomical centre, food and wine lovers will get so much from a stop here.

Canal and river cruises on the Loire

As France’s longest river, a Loire cruise can be one of the most rewarding in the entire country. Starting your cruise in the commune town of Briare will mean you can include a huge area in your Loire valley river cruises . This canalside town is also the location of a Locaboat mooring dock, meaning you can start your journey along the Loire with ease. Similar to River Lot boat hire , Canal boat hire in the Loire valley is quite common and hiring your own boat here makes life a whole lot easier.

Travelling down the Loire from its northern and central points means you can take in an array of fantastic and iconic Loire sights. Cutting through the Loire valley’s countryside, you will see somewhat unassuming villages, châteaus, green fields and idyllic waterside habitats.

Eventually, your Loire valley boat cruise will reach the commune town of Marseilles-lès-Aubigny. Marseilles-lès-Aubigny is home to a range of small-village-like houses and cottages, making it a calming stop before entering the cities ahead. Along with these picturesque homes, the commune is also home to a 12th-century church and the ruins of a feudal castle.

Coming to the most southerly point on Loire Riverboat trips , boaters will pass through the city of Nevers, a must stop-and-see destination along the river. Home to winding narrow medieval streets, the city of Nevers is a preserved gem of 14th-century architecture. The Ducal Palace of Nevers is the city’s most famous sight and an icon of French architecture.

Unmissable cities to explore with Loire Valley canal boats

Explore the ancient city of nevers.

As noted above, the city of Nevers is an icon of French medieval township and still home to many of these features that once made it so great. Standing on the raised hill overlooking the Loire River, Neveres itself is a picture-perfect town, looming large over the landscape and providing perfect photographic opportunities. Walking through the narrow winding streets of Nerves, visitors will be instantly taken with its compelling beauty, much of which has remained the same for centuries.

One of Nevers’ most popular sights is its cathedral, known in French as Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Nevers. Constructed at intervals over the past five hundred years, the cathedral has the unique status of being one of the only cathedrals with two apses. Apart from the cathedral, Nevers is also home to the museum of earthenware. Located in a former Benedictine monastery, there is a huge collection of plates, vases and statuettes for visitors to muse over.

Head further north to the town of Auxerre

When it comes to hiring a canal boat in the Burgundy region of France, the town of Auxerre is not to be overlooked. Like much of central France, Auxerre is home to a jaw-dropping 13th-century Gothic cathedral and is well worth a visit. A simple trundle through the city’s Old Town will open up a variety of quaint medieval buildings, many of which still retain their timber structures, adorned with carvings. This perfect blend of modern riverside city life mixed with the unmistakable air of medieval France is what makes Auxerre truly stand out as an iconic Burgundy settlement.

The Chablis region, one of Burgundy’s major wine regions, stands only a little east of the town, making it one of the best places to relax and enjoy a taste of your favourite tipple. The many cafes, restaurants and bars that call Auxerre home will be more than welcoming and won’t be shy about recommending that next best bottle of vintage.

Where to begin your journey?

As Locaboat has many bases throughout the Loire and Burgundy regions, it can be challenging to pick your ideal place to start. There are plenty of starting points to choose from, from Joigny in the north to Corbigny in the centre and Dompierre-sur-Besbre further south. If you are travelling into France from elsewhere, via a flight, for example, then starting from Joigny is an ideal beginning point. As it only takes two hours to travel from Paris to Joigny, this will mean you can streamline your boating holiday and start right away.

If you wish to boat a loop or travel the Burgundy and Loire regions in reverse, then flying into Lyon and travelling northwards to Dompierre-sur-Besbre may be a better option. Knowing which is the right route and starting point will be a completely subjective and personal decision, neither wrong nor right.

Top tips for visitors

  • Buying a good guide book is a great idea and most will give you ideas for cafes and restaurants along the route. It is a good idea to plan ahead just in case the shops are closed as many supermarkets are closed on a Sunday.
  • Essentials for your luggage include insect repellent and after-bite, a cardigan or sweater (even in the summer there can be a strong breeze) and of course sun cream. Taking squashable luggage (to fit into your boat’s storage space) is an excellent idea.
  • If you are self-driving your boat, getting (and reading in advance) a pilot guide book is strongly recommended > Canal du Midi navigation books and guides < .
  • As well as travel by road and by water, most of the large towns along the Canal du Midi have excellent rail links.

The Midi and Languedoc

Spanning the regions of the Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées, the Canal du Midi boasts some unique and truly breathtaking landscapes.

This delightful canal’s green waters twist and turn through the countryside, following the contours, bordered by an avenue of thousands of plane trees whose exposed roots interlock at the water’s edge, reinforcing the banks.

There are 328 structures across the Canal du Midi, from aqueducts and bridges to tunnels and locks (écluses in French). Unlike most locks, these are all oval, making them unique, although the most famous is actually the Agde Round Lock. Being round, it can even allow a boat to turn around. It also has three sets of lock gates, each with a different water level – a very unique sight. There are actually 86 working locks to enjoy navigating on your cruise. Most ecluses are now user-operated – by the end of the first day you will certainly be a master.

History of the Canal du Midi

It was the Romans who first had the idea of building a waterway to join the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, but the task proved impossible for many practical reasons. Even the great Leonardo da Vinci was unable to contemplate the task. In fact, it wasn’t until 1667 that construction actually began, under the reign of Louis XIV. Pierre-Paul Riquet designed and built the Canal Royal de Languedoc (as it was then known) with the aim of transporting wheat, wine and textiles. It took 12,000 people (surprisingly for this period, it was women who made up a large part of the workforce) to make it a reality, but it opened on May 15th 1681. However, it wasn’t until two centuries later, when his canal was linked to the Canal du Garonne, that Riquet’s dream of reaching the Atlantic was fulfilled.

Canal du Midi map

The Canal Royal de Languedoc was renamed the Canal du Midi during the French Revolution, and by 1856 it carried over 100,000 tonnes of cargo and a million passengers a year. However, by the following year commerce had almost dried up due to the opening of the Bordeaux to Sete railway.

The combination of stunning scenery, wide variety of nature, avenue of trees and of course the sheer engineering prowess and unique locks that run the length of the canal, have given the Canal du Midi a renaissance. Since the 1990s tourists have flocked to the world renowned stretch of water and its popularity continues to grow.

To ensure the future appearance of the Canal du Midi, a huge replanting operation is currently underway, with thousands of new trees being planted to preserve the character of the canal for years to come.

Most of France lies in the southern part of the temperate zone. The subtropical zone encompasses its southern fringe. It has three different types of climate: oceanic, continental, and Mediterranean. In addition, there are of course mountainous regions, with a colder climate depending on altitude.

In the southeast, the Mediterranean climate extends over the coastal plains and penetrates the valley of the lower Rhône River. The plains of the northeast are particularly affected by a continental climate. The pure oceanic climate prevails in the northwest, especially in Brittany.

The regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea have a Mediterranean climate , with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is higher than that of the Atlantic Ocean, especially in the French Riviera, where it reaches 25 °C in August. It’s a bit lower compared with other Mediterranean areas. Precipitation is heavy and tends to fall in sudden downpours. Especially in the autumn and spring, whereas summer is nearly completely dry. On the Mediterranean coast and in Corsica the amount of sunshine is good. Even in winter, there are several sunny days, while in summer the sky is often clear.

The island of Corsica has a Mediterranean climate on the coasts, with mild and wet winters, and warm or hot and sunny summers, even though it’s exposed to both the Mistal and the west wind, which can be very strong, especially in the western and southern part of the island.

The continental area, which can be heated in summer by the Azores High. This brings subtropical air masses, therefore sometimes it can be hot in summer, with temperatures about 32/33 °C or above. While in winter the city is exposed to cold winds from Eastern Europe, so there may be some freezing or snowy days, with night temperatures about -6 °C.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025, plus tips and what to expect

Donna Heiderstadt

A transatlantic cruise ranks high on many travelers' bucket lists, especially those who love the camaraderie and adventure of a voyage by ship. Today's roughly 4,000-nautical-mile transatlantic crossing is more akin to the preaviation "Grand Tour" wealthy Americans once enjoyed than the immigration journeys many of our European ancestors made from the 17th to early 20th centuries.

Leisurely and luxurious, a one-way sailing offers fine dining, wellness-oriented pampering, enlightening lectures, glamorous nightlife and plenty of time to relax. Transatlantic cruises are also a solution for travelers who prefer not to fly and a tempting option for cruise lovers seeking a longer itinerary at an affordable price.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. However, for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience; plus, it provides the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

Here's everything you need to know about cruising the Atlantic — plus a selection of the best transatlantic cruises you can book in 2024 and 2025.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

france canal boat trips

While Cunard is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England, and New York City — which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2 — pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings.

These generally occur in the spring (late March to early May) and fall (September to November). In the spring, ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe, and in the fall, vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada-New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises , these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, SeaDream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November — while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment — are a good option and a terrific value. This is especially true if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries might also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

How long does the crossing take?

france canal boat trips

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times, the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall. Yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. Additionally, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a midship cabin on a lower deck); also, be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it might seem counterintuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view. If you're concerned, opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. However, if you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, book a starboard cabin; this might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite — a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is your cabin's deck number and whether the cabin is situated forward, midship or aft. Generally, the ship's movement through rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is midship and on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

france canal boat trips

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic Sea and the British Isles generally take a northerly route. Vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter home port in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Southampton or New York. Depending on the length of the cruise, expect to call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland, or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira; Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands; Ponta Delgada in the Azores; and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to reach the other side of the ocean. Below are a few factors to keep in mind.

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season; some are also scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. One-way tickets are sometimes more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries available in the next two years.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2

france canal boat trips

  • Transatlantic crossings: September through December 2024 and 2025

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton aboard the 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners with a level of pomp and ceremony that appeals to Cunard loyalists, bucket-listers and memory-making couples or families celebrating a milestone anniversary or birthday.

These eight-night eastbound and six-night westbound voyages are all about the sea. There are interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamor.

A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, getting an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and enjoying traditional afternoon tea.

The evening lineup generally starts with a multicourse dinner (same table and same waiter nightly) followed by a Broadway-inspired show, an abridged Shakespeare play or even a magic act. The ship is also famous for its Gala Evenings, capped off with Champagne sipping and dancing to a live orchestra. Yes, pack those ballgowns and tuxes.

Cruise fares start at $1,818 per person for an inside cabin and $2,238 per person for a balcony room.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady

france canal boat trips

  • 16-night Rome to Miami: Nov. 28-Dec. 14, 2024
  • 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona cruises: May 3-18, 2025

Virgin Voyages ' 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady has an onboard ambience that rivals a youthful beach club. Passengers and crew will keep the party going day and night this fall on a 16-night Rome to Miami transatlantic sailing . The sailing has calls on Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Funchal on the island of Madeira; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Or party in reverse on the ship's 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona crossing in May 2025. It stops in Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Casablanca, Morocco; and Barcelona.

The ship's 20 excellent dining venues, cutting-edge entertainment (campy and a bit naughty — think Drag Queen Bingo), an impressive lineup of wellness classes (from yoga at sunrise to On-the-Upswing Bungee Aerobics) and fun activities ('90s Boy Band Dance Class, anyone?) provide plenty of ways to pass the time.

Cruise fares start at $3,326 per cabin (or less than $1,700 per person) for the Rome-to-Miami sailing and $3,976 per cabin (or around $1,988 per person) for the Miami-to-Barcelona sailing.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream and Fantasy

france canal boat trips

  • 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise: May 4-17, 2025
  • 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise: Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024 and 2025

Certain Disney fans — namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens. These 13-night eastbound and westbound crossings from Port Canaveral to Barcelona and from Southampton to Port Canaveral aboard 2,500-passenger Disney Dream or 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy offer a solution to that dilemma.

Each of these transatlantic cruises occurs when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will likely be on board, but certainly not in overwhelming numbers.

These crossings feature nine to 11 sea days during which Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and a southerly route in spring that means plenty of pool time. On top of that, each sailing includes a mix of culturally rich ports.

On the eastbound crossing, they are Ponta Delgada and Lisbon, Portugal; and Cadiz, Cartagena and Barcelona, Spain. On the westbound crossing, the ports are Ponta Delgada and the new Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Eastbound fares for balcony cabins start at $4,937 for two adults (or just under $2,500 per person). Westbound fares start at $5,360 for an inside cabin (about $2,680 per person).

Holland America's Nieuw Statendam

france canal boat trips

  • 28-night Adriatic Crossing: Stromboli, Andalusia & Azores: Nov. 1-29, 2025

For a shoulder-season meander through the Adriatic and Mediterranean followed by a transatlantic crossing, Holland America 's 28-night Adriatic Crossing: Stromboli, Andalusia & Azores visits 14 ports in eight countries. This makes it a true hybrid of an ocean crossing and a traditional cruise.

The sailing, aboard the 3,665-passenger Nieuw Statendam, departs from Athens and visits ports in Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Albania, Spain and Portugal before arriving in Fort Lauderdale. Of the 12 sea days, two include scenic cruising.

The voyage takes place in November, so expect temperatures to be on the cooler side in most ports and during the crossing. It's a good thing, then, that Nieuw Statendam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof. Holland America passengers, mostly older retirees, can also pass the time dining at each of the 10 onboard restaurants and enjoy entertainment that includes live bands at the B.B. King's Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room.

At $3,249 per person for an inside cabin and $4,699 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are a great deal for a four-week sailing.

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Ascent and Celebrity Apex

france canal boat trips

  • 13-night Italy and Bermuda transatlantic: Oct. 31-Nov. 13, 2025
  • 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic: March 8-21, 2025

Celebrity Cruises ' Italy and Bermuda transatlantic sailing from Rome to Fort Lauderdale offers 13 nights aboard its newest ship, Celebrity Ascent. The sailing features port calls in Cagliari, Sardinia; Gibraltar; and Bermuda, along with nine sea days.

Accommodating 3,260 passengers, Celebrity Ascent is a megaship designed with adults in mind. On board, you'll find multiple hot tubs but no waterslides, contemporary decor, 32 sophisticated food and beverage venues (including Voyages, Daniel Boulud's restaurant at sea, bookable at extra cost), an indoor solarium pool, a glittering Grand Plaza housing the line's signature Martini Bar, and nightly entertainment ranging from high-tech theater productions to multisensory events in Eden.

Inside cabin fares start at $1,147 per person, and balcony cabin fares at $1,335 per person.

If you prefer to cross the Atlantic in spring 2025, take sister Edge Class ship Celebrity Apex , which carries 2,910 passengers. It will sail a 13-night Bermuda and Portugal transatlantic cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona with port calls at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard; Ponta Delgada; and Valencia.

Inside cabins for that cruise start at $910 per person, and balcony rooms start at $1,163 per person.

Viking's Viking Mars

france canal boat trips

  • 20-night Atlantic and Mediterranean Horizons: March 27-April 16, 2025

The 930-passenger Viking Mars is an adults-only ship featuring a sleek Scandinavian design. Guests can enjoy elevated (and complimentary) dining in eight venues, as well as daily activities that include lectures by guest speakers and resident historians. ( Viking bills itself as "the thinking person's cruise.")

They will also get unlimited access to the thermal suite at the Liv Nordic Spa, a main pool with a retractable roof (there's also an aft infinity pool and hot tub), and complimentary beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

Deluxe balcony cabins start at $8,698 per person (basic balcony cabins are currently sold out).

Princess Cruises' Sky Princess

france canal boat trips

  • 27-night Moroccan and Iberian Grand Adventure: March 9-April 5, 2025

It sails from Fort Lauderdale to Southampton aboard the 3,660-passenger Sky Princess. Princess Cruises guests will enjoy a southerly spring crossing that culminates with visits to 10 ports in four countries (Portugal, Morocco, Spain and England) — including Madeira, three Canary Islands and Casablanca.

Sky Princess , which debuted in 2019, is a Royal Class ship featuring three pools, a glittering Italian-style Piazza (home to Alfredo's Pizzeria — some of the best pizza at sea), four specialty dining venues (at an extra cost), poolside Movies Under the Stars and original production shows in the Princess Theater.

Inside cabins start at $2,746 per person, and balcony cabins at $4,126 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Seven Seas Splendor

france canal boat trips

  • 14-night Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro: Jan. 5-19, 2025

If crossing the southern Atlantic Ocean from Africa to South America on a small luxury cruise ship is on your bucket list, consider Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' early 2025 Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro sailing.

While not a bargain by any means, this 14-night itinerary aboard the 750-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Splendor is all-inclusive. Business-class airfare, transfers, top-notch cuisine, unlimited beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi and most shore excursions are all included in the fare.

Here, you'll get a chance to experience the country's dramatic sand dunes and resident flamingos. Then, as you cross the Atlantic, you'll visit the remote island of St. Helena, where Napoleon died in exile, before continuing on to an overnight stay in Rio de Janeiro ahead of disembarkation.

All-inclusive fares start at $12,949 per person for a suite with a balcony.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Prima

france canal boat trips

  • 16-night Transatlantic (Italy, France and Spain): Nov. 7-23, 2024

Board in Rome and tour the Mediterranean in the shoulder season before crossing the Atlantic to New York on a November 2024 Norwegian Cruise Line cruise. The Transatlantic (Italy, France and Spain) sailing aboard Norwegian Prima visits Livorno (for Pisa and Florence); Cannes, France; Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Malaga and Cadiz, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; and Ponta Delgada. You'll spend six days at sea.

The 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima , which debuted in 2022, features 14 restaurants (six included and eight specialty options for an added fee) and 19 bars and lounges. It also sports a three-level go-kart racetrack and virtual-reality gaming. Entertainment options include "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical," stand-up comedy at The Improv at Sea and a rock cover band in Syd Norman's Pour House.

Inside cabins start at $1,421 per person, and balcony cabins at $2,101 per person.

Silversea Cruises' Silver Ray

france canal boat trips

  • 25-night Rome to Fort Lauderdale: Nov. 7-Dec. 2, 2025

Plan ahead to score a suite on the 25-night Rome to Fort Lauderdale transatlantic crossing in late 2025 aboard Silversea Cruises ' newest all-suite luxury ship, Silver Ray .

Not only is the price all-inclusive, but the 728-passenger ship will visit 11 ports in five countries. You'll experience Livorno; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Marseille; Valencia, Barcelona (overnight), Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Cadiz, Spain; and Lisbon and Madeira. Then, you'll cross the Atlantic and spend an overnight in Hamilton, Bermuda, before disembarking in Fort Lauderdale.

Silver Ray is Silversea's second Nova Class ship. It features spacious suites and inviting exterior and interior spaces perfect for late-season Mediterranean cruising and a cool-weather transatlantic crossing. Its culinary-focused S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) program tempts tastebuds with region- and port-inspired menus, cooking classes and cocktails.

All-inclusive, door-to-door fares — which include economy-class flights, transfers, complimentary beverages and gourmet dining, butler service, gratuities and select shore excursions — start at $13,100 per person for Classic Veranda Suite.

Bottom line

No matter your reason for considering a transatlantic cruise, you're guaranteed to experience the secret magic of sea days, with ample time to relax and unwind. With no land in sight for roughly a week, you can enjoy the ship's amenities without feeling rushed.

Make new friends over coffee or a game of bridge, watch movies in your cabin, learn more about the world during lectures by onboard experts, or treat yourself to rejuvenating massages and facials in the spa.

Even better, per-night rates are typically lower on crossings than on round-trip, port-intensive cruises. So, you can enjoy a longer sailing at a fraction of the usual cost. No matter which transatlantic cruise you deem best for your travel style and interests, it will surely be a memorable bucket-list trip.

6 canal-boating trips in the UK for families

Instil a love of the water in your kids on a narrow-boat break, with plenty of stops to explore nearby attractions.

france canal boat trips

There are few better ways to slow down and come together as a family than on a canal-boat break. Waterways offer a very different perspective on the UK, their quiet channels taking in some of the country’s most picturesque landscapes as well as its most fascinating industrial heritage.

Though it’s not just about floating along and admiring the scenery. Canal boats are simple to operate, but the journey requires teamwork, and everyone can pitch in – whether by taking the wheel, opening the lock gates or just following progress on the map.

There’s so much flexibility and variety too. Moor up for a pub lunch, an excursion along a waterside woodland trail, or schedule a stop at a theme park or museum. And when evening falls, turn to old-fashioned family pleasures with a game of cards or round of Trivial Pursuit. A canal-boat holiday is an opportunity to re-connect – with your surroundings and each other.

1. Chirk to Ellesmere & Llangollen

Trip length: 16 hours return For a journey that takes in some of the most dramatic scenery in the UK, head to Chirk in Wales for a trip on the Llangollen Canal. This short route through the Dee Valley is perfect for novices, with plenty of stop-off points and the option to avoid locks. It will also impress kids as the waterway glides over the world’s tallest canal aqueduct at Pontcysyllte and through Chirk Tunnel, offering 1,575ft of total darkness. Along the way, there are historic market towns and woodland trails to explore.

2. Ely to Cambridge

Trip length: Three to four days This East Anglian classic launches from the cathedral city of Ely, a few miles northeast of Cambridge. It’s 18 miles each way on the scenic rivers Ouse and Cam. The route passes through Wicken Fen wetland nature reserve, an ancient habitat of reedbeds and marshland that’s home to birds and butterflies. There are just four locks to tackle, which takes some of the strain out of things for beginners, and you’ll go as far as Cambridge, for a spot of picnicking and punting before the return leg.

3. Falkirk to Edinburgh

Trip length: Seven days This Scottish break kicks off with a ride on the famous Falkirk Wheel, a towering mechanical masterpiece that lifts you onto the Union Canal. From there, sail into the Falkirk Tunnel and make a stop at the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, ruined Linlithgow Palace, which offers interactive family activities. Try watersports on Linlithgow Loch, before continuing across the 820ft-long Avon Aqueduct; kids will love that it snakes 85ft above the ground.

4. Stourport Ring, from Stoke Prior

Trip length: Seven to 14 days Starting at Stoke Prior in Worcestershire, this 76-mile route passes Birmingham family attractions and Cadbury World, where you can pause for a chocolatey afternoon tea and new attractions unveiled for the brand’s 200th anniversary this year. Beyond the city, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal forges through glorious countryside. You’ll then join the Severn for a spot of river cruising down to Worcester and back up the other side of the ring.

5. Acton Bridge to Wigan

Trip length: Seven days There are various family-friendly attractions within reach of this route in the northwest of England, from Gulliver’s World in Warrington to the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes. But you’ll find enough to occupy you on the journey itself. Dutton Stop Lock raises boats just a handful of centimetres, making it the most beginner-friendly of locks, after which you’re into peaceful Cheshire countryside. You’ll skirt ancient villages such as Lymm, which was listed in the Domesday Book; enter the pitch blackness of Preston Book Tunnel; and pass through the precious Wigan Flashes and Pennington Flash nature reserves, former mining areas now covered by lakes and woods, harbouring many protected wildlife species.

6. Caldon Canal Return

Trip length: Seven days Departing from Stoke-on-Trent, in the heart of the Staffordshire potteries, a cruise on the Caldon Canal provides a fascinating transition from the brick-built kilns of Britain’s industrial past to bucolic, timeless countryside. This canal is frequently overlooked by boaters, which makes it a peaceful stretch — though there’s also the chance to hop off for a high-octane side trip to Alton Towers theme park along the way. Alternatively, you can disembark to ride a heritage steam railway through the Churnet Valley. Look out for wildlife ranging from kingfishers to otters as you follow branches of the waterway to the villages of Leek and Froghall.
