Udai Mandir is an architectural beauty. If you are an appreciator of architectural brilliance and quality then this place is for you.

Half of the temple entrance gate is made from the carved sandstone (Jodhpur is the hub of sandstone).

The main temple stands on a huge raised platform and is supported by 102 pillars.

Inside Udai Mandir there are beautiful wall paintings with 84 Yogasanas and the pictures of Nath Yogis made up with gold.

The temple has a Garbh Griha. The upper portion of the Garbh Griha is kept covered with cloth and is surrounded by gold pots. The gold polishing in Udai Mandir still has its original shine and quality.

2. Siddhanth Shiv Temple

Siddhanth Shiv temple is situated between Takhat Sagar hills and Kalyana Lake. Its way is on Chopasani Road and it is about 10 Kms away from Jodhpur.

You can reach the temple only after crossing the hundreds of stairs made up by cutting rocks.

Once upon a time the place, exactly where the temple now stands, was completely a deserted area.

Siddhanth Shiv temple is believed to be built by GauriShanker (also called Nepali Baba, his real name was Veetragi Narain Swami) himself by cutting stones.

He was a handicapped saint who had only four fingers in each of his hand and foot.

6. Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada lies to the left of the Mehrangarh fort complex. It is a royal memorial made up of white marble and wonderful architecture piece of art.

• It has wonderful architecture, some stones are extremely thin and polished such that they emit a warm glow when the sun’s rays dance across their surface.
• Some rare portraits of the former rulers of Jodhpur are displayed in Jaswant Thada.

7. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was created in 2006 and is situated next to Mehrangarh Fort.

There are plants in this park that are adapted to growing in arid, rocky areas of the Thar Desert.

Rao Jodha Park is open throughout the year from 9 AM to 5:15 PM every day.

Entry Fees for Adults: Rs. 50, Students Rs. 10, Guided Walks Rs. 100 and entry for children aged 15 and below is FREE.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the world’s largest private residences. Taj Hotels manage a part of the palace.

It was named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present Maharaja Gaj Singh II, this monument has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family .

A part of the palace has now been converted into a hotel and a museum.

Ghanta Ghar also known as the clock tower.

11. Sachiya Mata Temple

The Sachiya Mata Temple is located in Osian, near Jodhpur. Osian is 60-65 kms from Jodhpur.

In this Temple mother goddess Sachiya (Also called Indrani) is worshipped by many castes living in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and North India.

She is “Kul Devi” (a protector goddess of a community) of many of well-known communities.

This temple was built by the Parmar King Upendre for his “Kul Devi“ in the 9th to 10th century C.E.

12. Balsamand Lake and Garden

This lake is a popular picnic spot of Jodhpur. It was built in 1159 AD by Balak Rao Parihar. It was constructed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore, the then capital of Jodhpur.

The Balsamand Lake is surrounded by green gardens and has trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava and plum. This place is home for animals and birds like the jackal and peacock.

It is a well-known fact that after visiting Baba Ramdev Temple of Jodhpur if you visit Baba Ramdev Temple in Ramdevra, Jaisalmer; your every wish is fulfilled.

Handicapped people, poor people promises Baba Ramdev certain numbers of repeated walk visits and after those their wishes come true.

15. Om Banna Temple

Om Banna Temple (also known Om Bana, Bullet Banna and Bullet baba Temple) is a temple located in Pali district near Jodhpur. It is located 20 Kms from Pali and 50 Kms. The motorcycle is a 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet.

Om Bana, a local citizen, was riding the bike, it got unbalanced and hit the tree. He was dead immediately.

Police took motorcycle in the police station but next day bike was found under the same tree. Even after numerous attempts to take bike away, bike was found at the same place under the tree where the accident happened.

The bullet still lies there in an open enclosure. Many truck drivers and families stop by to visit the place and pray for their safe journey.

16. Mandore Gardens

The Mandore gardens has charming collection of temples and memorials and it’s on high rock terraces.

The gardens house the Chhatris (cenotaphs) of many rulers of the state of Marwar.

The Mandore Gardens also house a government museum, a ‘Hall of Heroes’ and ‘the temple to 33 crore Hindu Gods’ (The temple of 330 million Hindu Gods).

17. Shri Ganesh Temple

It’s an ancient temple located at the Sandstone Hill. Its local name is Pahadi Ganesh Mandir. Lord Ganesh is worshipped by all the localites and visiting the temple on Wednesday is considered holy.

Lord Ganesha is the father of Santoshi Mata.

In Jodhpur there is a very old and famous lake, which is surrounded by mountains and is named as Lal Sagar Lake.

Here is a natural ancient temple of Santoshi Mata fulfilling the desires of all.

This temple is surrounded by various kinds of trees. In India, this is world class age old natural shrine, which has amazing specialty.

The mountain is elevated on santoshi Mata temple as if Sheshnag (a kind of snake) is giving its shadow to Mateshwari. There is an Amrit Kunda close to temple where an old tree is in the same shape from many years. Near that tree there is very lovely waterfall.

19. Sardar Market

Sardar Market is a full of busy Indian market containing riots of sight and sound. The clock tower (Ghanta Ghar) in the center of Sardar Market is a useful reference point (if you lose your way refer to it and start again 🙂 ).

You can spend hours in shops chatting with friendly owners who will offer a cup of masala chai (tea). This is the true highlight of Rajasthani hospitality.

You will find Jodhpur to be full of amiable and kind people who will be quick to offer you chai (tea) as a symbol of genuine hospitality first and foremost (not at all an attempt to coerce you to buy).

It is not uncommon for them to turn their shop upside down to show you all of their goods and many are quite proud of their businesses.

It is an artificial lake. It receives its water from Hathi Nehar (English: Elephant Canal), which is further connected to the Indira Gandhi canal.

The natural vegetation here mostly consists of Babool trees (English: Acacia Nilotic), and various migratory birds such as Siberian cranes are seen here in the winter season.

The city of Jodhpur and all the surrounding towns and villages depend on Kaylana Lake as a source of drinking water.

The water from Jaswant Sagar Dam is utilized for irrigation purposes in Jodhpur. The greenest part of Jodhpur receives water from this dam.

22. Sardar Government Museum

Sardar Government Museum is located in Public Park (Umed Garden). It was established in 1909 and formally opened to public on 17 March, 1936.

The museum is named after Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur.

Timings of this museum is from 10 AM to 4 PM and it is closed on Friday. Entry fee is only Rs. 10.

23. Umed Garden and Zoo

It is a popular garden of Jodhpur. Umed garden was developed by Maharaja Umed Singh. It was named after him.

The garden has five separate gates around it to facilitate entry to the garden from different directions. It has green lawn with beautiful roses and other flowers.

Inside the garden is a museum, Ashoka trees, artistically designed fountains, a library and a zoo.

The zoo houses different types of birds, local, African and Australian parrots, ducks, rabbits etc. All the birds and animals are kept in their natural environment.

24. MahaMandir

MahaMandir is a famous temple in Jodhpur. The temple was built in 1812.

MahaMandir Temple is supported by 84 pillars. It contains detailed designs and figures of gurus describing various postures of Yoga.

It is located at a distance of 2 km from Jodhpur on the road towards Mandore. Now a school is run in the premises.

In the premises of the temple, there are many ancient shrines and houses that reflect intricate works of stone.

The Best Area to Stay in Jodhpur Although not as large and accessible as the Rajasthan capital, Jaipur, or as renowned as the romantic city of Udaipur, Jodhpur is still utterly captivating. Built in the 15th century on the edge of the desert, it’s nicknamed the ‘Blue City’ because of the several homes, guesthouses, and shops painted in shades of blue. On a rocky hilltop dominating the medieval-looking Old City – a rarity in India – is the extraordinary Mehrangarh Fort. It makes a lot of sense to stay within walking distance of the fort and the markets and other attractions within the Old City . This allows maximum time to soak up the remarkable history and evident ambience, explore (and get lost within) the labyrinthine lanes, and admire the breathtaking fort from a rooftop café/bar. A highlight of any visit to Jodhpur is staying at one of the numerous havelis (guesthouses) spread across the Old City. Usually only a handful of rooms in a family home, most have been attractively renovated and many are centuries old. There are three main areas to stay within the Old City , each a little different: (1) the oldest and most chaotic area near Sardar Market also offers jaw-dropping views of the fort from numerous rooftop cafés; (2) the more spacious area around the Stepwell pond and town square is surrounded by classy bistros and boutiques; and (3) Navchokiya in the west offers the broadest views of (and closest access to) the fort. (Before deciding to stay in the Old City , however, read the special section below.) To avoid the dirty and overcrowded alleys and the narrow (and often) claustrophobic guesthouses in the Old City, perhaps stay in the more spacious areas in the inner south: Ratanada and Defence Colony nearby. Unlike the Old City, these suburbs have streets that are pleasant for walking with far less pollution, crowds, noise, and cows (and dung). The main vehicle entrance to the north is really only accessible by auto-rickshaw, but a far more convenient entrance is only a few minutes’ walk, past a lake, from all the guesthouses in the Navchokiya section of the Old City, just west of the fort. Best Area in Jodhpur for Shopping: Near Sardar Market (Old City) Dominated by the landmark Clock Tower, this market is very quiet, clean, and hassle-free compared to those just about anywhere else in India. Without pushy salesmen and intrusive traffic (and horrible noise and fumes), it’s a pleasure to shop for gemstones, traditional-style jutti shoes, leather goods, puppets, tie-dyed fabrics, and the ‘genuine fake’ antique reproductions for which Jodhpur is renowned. Best Area in Jodhpur for Families: Defence Colony While the Old City is certainly captivating, there are two significant reasons why this area may not be appropriate for children: (1) the very narrow alleys are often unpleasant and, sometimes, dangerous to wander about because of auto-rickshaws and motorbikes; and (2) the older-style guesthouses have steep and narrow steps, precarious balconies, and undersized rooms unsuitable for sharing as a family. Far more spacious hotels – rather than just guesthouses – along shady streets with genuine sidewalks and bearable traffic can be found in the inner southern area called Defence Colony. Best Area in Jodhpur for Food & Restaurants: Near Stepwell (Old City) Stepwell is an ancient pond and town square just 300m east of the fort walls. This renovated area is now sprinkled with surprisingly chic boutiques and bistros and includes the only resort-style hotel in the Old City: RAAS Jodhpur. Several adorable cafés/bars overlook Stepwell, a busy area whereas many locals as tourists stop to admire, take photos, and chat. Inside the incongruous modern high-rise opposite Stepwell are several stylish eateries, including one on the roof (the highest in the region). On top of most guesthouses in this region are cafés/bars offering stunning views of the fort, which looks particularly romantic after dark. Best Area in Jodhpur for Transport: Ratanada The major train and bus stations and the airport are easy to reach from anywhere in Jodhpur – although only auto-rickshaws can enter most of the Old City. The most convenient area for transport is Ratanada, an inner southern suburb. It is within 4km of the airport, train terminal, and bus station, and only 10-15 minutes by auto-rickshaw from the Old City. Best Area in Jodhpur for Nightlife: Near Stepwell (Old City) Much of the area surrounding the ancient Stepwell pond and the town square is surprisingly upmarket. Some places to eat, drink and shop could genuinely be called ‘chic’ and are as refined as anything in the posh suburbs of Delhi. However, there is very little to do after dark in Jodhpur other than enjoying a meal and/or drink at a rooftop café/bar while oohing and aahing at the magnificent views of the fort. Also, look out for the local festivals, the only time that bands or DJs regularly perform. Best Area in Jodhpur for Vibe & Culture: Near Sardar Market (Old City) Unlike almost all other markets around India, the Sardar Market is a wonderful place to shop or just soak up the ambience and history. Within walls inaccessible to most traffic and dominated by the iconic and century-old Clock Tower, the market is also surrounded by cafés. These are ideal for escaping the heat and inevitable noise while watching traders and buyers ply their skills just across the street. Most Romantic Area in Jodhpur: Navchokiya (Old City) The Old City is one of the most fascinating places anywhere in India, and the fort dominates the meandering alleys like nowhere else in the country. Particularly intimate and welcoming are the small family-run guesthouses, many in beautifully converted and centuries-old buildings. The majestic fort is wonderfully illuminated for a few hours after sunset, so one of the most romantic places in India to enjoy a meal and/or drink is a rooftop café/bar in Navchokiya, which offers the broadest views of the fort in the Old City. Best Areas in Jodhpur for First Timers: Ratanada and Defence Colony The crowds, pollution, traffic, and poverty found in all Indian cities can still overwhelm those who have traveled to the country many times. The Old City is enthralling to wander about, but less appealing to stay in. The extremely narrow lanes are clogged with motorbikes and auto-rickshaws, and almost all accommodations are in narrow guesthouses, many with dark rooms and most facing noisy streets. To appreciate Jodhpur without all the hassles, stay in the inner southern areas of Ratanada and Defence Colony nearby. Pleasingly convenient to the airport, train terminal, and bus station, these areas also provide the sort of sidewalks, spacious hotels, and clean(ish) air not remotely possible in the Old City. Safest Areas of Jodhpur: Ratanada and Defence Colony There is nothing particularly unsafe about Jodhpur, but like all Indian cities, the main danger is the relentless traffic. Always remember: pedestrians do not have the right of way in India, except (usually) at a red traffic light. Paradoxically, the traffic is even more potentially dangerous around the Old City, where the winding and very narrow lanes – without sidewalks – are full of maniacal auto-rickshaws and motorbikes (and wandering cows). So, it’s safer to stay in the inner southern suburbs of Ratanada and Defence Colony. With broad streets, real sidewalks, and far less traffic, there are also fewer people, reducing the chances of any possible opportunistic petty crime. Staying in the Old City Excellent reasons to stay in the ancient part of Jodhpur are proximity to the fort; the history and charisma of the lovingly-renovated and centuries-old guesthouses; and the breathtaking views of the fort from rooftop cafés, which is especially romantic and photogenic after dark when it is illuminated. However, the Old City is claustrophobic. The narrow lanes are jam-packed with drivers of motorbikes and auto-rickshaws who care nothing whatsoever about pedestrians – foreign or local. With a complete lack of any sidewalks, and abundant cows (and dung), walking around the Old City is challenging at best and, often, quite unpleasant. Auto-rickshaws can drive down most lanes and alleys or will drop passengers off at a junction near a guesthouse, but no taxi or car can enter most parts of the Old City. With a few notable exceptions, there are no large hotels in the Old City – only quaint, family-run havelis (guesthouses). Rooms are usually compact, bordering on cramped, and often noisy from the street below and from neighboring guests. No guesthouse has a lift, and most rooms are up to six floors above street-level and only accessible by steep and, often, rickety steps. Built long before the tourism boom, rooms in these guesthouses have few windows, so views and natural light are limited. These guesthouses are not suitable for the infirm and young children. 1. Near Sardar Market (Old City) The oldest part of the Old City is the most charismatic, but also the most chaotic and unattractive. Unnamed alleys lead in all directions, so getting lost at least once a day is inevitable – and watch out for piles of fresh cow dung! The overwhelming attraction is proximity to the omnipotent fort. Most guesthouses feature a rooftop, often with a café/bar, offering jaw-dropping views of the city and fort (which is especially romantic after dark). Best Luxury Hotels: Pal Haveli • Haveli Inn Pal 2. Near Stepwell (Old City) In the eastern part of the Old City, around the ancient Stepwell pond and town square, is a renovated area of tempting bistros and chic boutiques. Many of the lanes are wider and less confusing to wander about here. There are also plenty of appealing guesthouses – and even a resort-style hotel on the periphery (RAAS Jodhpur), which offers gardens, car access, and extras that can’t be offered elsewhere in the Old City, such as a spa and pool. 3. Navchokiya (Old City) In this western part of the Old City, many buildings are at least 300 years old. Most havelis (guesthouses) have been beautifully renovated, brightly-painted shades of blue, and converted, offering a rooftop café/bar with sublime views of the city and fort. Another definite advantage of this area is that all guesthouses are within a few minutes’ walk of the fort’s secondary non-vehicle entrance, which is near a picturesque lake. So, visitors can explore the fort without needing a ticket until reaching the museum at the main entrance, some 500m further inside the walls. Best Luxury Hotel: Rani Mahal Best Cheap/Moderate Hotels: Jewel Palace Haweli • Singhvi’s Haveli 4. Ratanada This inner southern suburb – and the adjoining area of Defence Colony (see below) – provides a more spacious and, for some, more pleasant option than the Old City. With shady streets and real footpaths, everything is also far less crowded and touristy. Hotels in Ratanada can also provide things rarely (if ever) seen in the Old City: spacious gardens, rooms with views, and even a swimming pool. This area has the added benefit of being within 4km of the airport, bus station, and railway terminal, as well as the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, which would be the number one attraction in most other Indian cities. Best Luxury Hotel: Ratan Vilas Best Cheap/Moderate Hotel: Treebo Trend The Marwar 5. Defence Colony The Radisson is luxurious and family-friendly. Like the adjoining suburb of Ratanada (see above), this area also offers wide streets, real sidewalks, interesting shops, and cafés and bars with gardens. Unlike the Old City, in Defence Colony, the streets are more enjoyable for walking, foreigners are rare so locals are friendlier, and the vibe is more residential than touristy. With more mid-range and top-end hotels than guesthouses, the area is close enough to see and hear roaring jets from the nearby air-force base that is also used as the airport, and near the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace. The Shri Ganesh Temple is said to have existed since 1459. There is a great statue of Lord Ganesh here that is 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide. The locals say it appeared here naturally, rising out of the ground. This legend makes the temple quite popular, and during auspicious events it attracts a great crowd. From its high location up the hill, the temple gets wonderful views of the surrounding lands. It's a very tranquil spot and the whole complex gives out a very spiritual feel to visitors.

Hospitality at its best”

im not the kind of person who would good to a luxurious place, im more of a backpacker and hosteller. But it was a special occasion and im glad i chose Ratan Vilas. It is a heritage property built in 1920s (well, one part of it, rest was built recently in that style), but still got original charms. The family of the raja who built it still lives on the property. The room was grand & spectacular. The entire staff was very pleasant, specially i found Mr. Balbir very humble and gentle. The food was also really good, specially for me because they very happily customized their dishes to make them vegan; food was fresh and tasty. Overall, a great experience.

Really grateful to the hotel for extending my stay post checkout as my flight was later in the day. Book it without a second thought. They also give fabulous suggestions for shopping/ dining. Nirvana house rooftop restaurant - this hidden cafe is just 300 m away from Jodhpur’s famous Clock Tower. Since the cafe is a part of a temple premise, its pillars and walls are ornate and colorful, packed with 150-year-old paintings depicting stories from Ramayana. The restaurants have two parts, an indoor serving area, and a rooftop.
