While Frontier Airlines maintains a list of requirements for all carry-on baggage, they do not have their own regulations regarding liquids. Instead, Frontier Airlines (flyfrontier.com) is bound by the regulations set forth by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA.)

When deciding what can and cannot bring on a plane, arguably the most important factor is whether or not you have checked baggage. If you’re traveling with only a carry-on bag and a free personal item, you have specific size limits and TSA regulations that provide significantly fewer options than if you were also bringing a checked bag.

A good practice is to check-in at the ticket counter kiosk early so you have time to figure all of this out at the airport with time to make it to your gate.

While checking luggage is nice for bringing larger, bulkier items you normally cannot carry on, traveling with just carry-on luggage can also be very convenient. You get to avoid baggage fees and don’t have to worry about your bags getting lost on the way, all for the price of just using a carry-on size shampoo. Frontier Airlines carry-on allowance gives you two free carry-on items: your carry on bag, which will be stored in the overhead bin, and your personal item, something small like a diaper bag, assistive device, small backpack or purse that can be nestled under the seat in front of yours. Your carry-on bag must be within the standard dimensions of 22”x14”x9” linear inches in order to fit properly. The TSA Liquids Rule for Carry-on Bags (3.4 ounces)

Understand these rules so you don’t get held up on the TSA security line!

TSA 3-1-1 Rule

Before you finish packing to head to the airport, always double-check your carry-on bags and make sure you don’t have any bottles or other items that don’t comply with the TSA liquids rule, (known as the 3-1-1 rule).   

By the time the TSA finds that expensive bottle of perfume or lotion in your bag, it’s too late and you’ll have to say goodbye and hand it over to get through security and board your plane on time.  It’s happened to my family many times and could easily have been avoided with a quick check before leaving.

To help make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we’ve created this article that will tell you everything you need to know about the TSA liquids rule, including how much liquid is 100 ml, what are travel-sized bottles, what is considered a liquid, etc. Basically, all the stuff that could get confiscated when making your way through airport security.

What’s the TSA Liquids Rule?

The TSA liquids rule states that you can bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, creams, gels, and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the airport security checkpoint. However, you are limited to containers that are travel sized and contain less than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per item.

Items that are in packages or bottles larger than 100 milliliters (or 3.4 ounces) will have to go in your checked luggage .  In addition to larger liquids, any liquid that is more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml and is not contained in a secure, tamper-proof bag must be packed in your checked luggage.

Each liquid must be in a 3.4-ounce or less container (“3”), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-sized plastic bag (“1”), and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag (“1”).

There are 2 exceptions to the TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

• Medications, and
• Infant/Child nourishment

Medications larger than 100ml

TSA allows larger-sized packages of medical liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on. This also includes medical accessories such as freezer bags, pumps, syringes, etc. These items do not have to be in a plastic zip lock bag, but you will have to declare these items to TSA officers at the checkpoint prior to inspection.

Formula, breast milk, and juice for infants and toddlers are allowed through the security checkpoint. These can be in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and are allowed in carry-on baggage.

Similar to medications, just inform the TSA officer of what you have and remove the items from your carry-on bag so they can be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.

Ice packs, freezer bags, frozen gel packs, and other accessories required to cool formula and breast milk are allowed in your carry-on bag.

The TSA PreCheck Program allows registered travelers the ability to go through expedited screening lines at over 200 participating U.S. airports with over 80 participating airlines. Once you are approved in the program you don’t need to remove your 3-1-1 liquids from your bag.

Actually, you can avoid removing any of the following items during the screening process:

• Light jacket/Sport coat/outerwear

What does TSA consider a liquid?

According to TSA guidelines, any substance that is free-flowing or viscous is considered a liquid. This includes liquids, aerosols, pastes, creams, and gels.

According to the TSA, “Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste, or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. You can take as many travel-sized liquids as you can comfortably fit into one quart-sized, zip-top bag.”

When it comes to makeup, the following are some examples of liquid cosmetics:

• Nail polish,
• Moisturizers,
• Foundation,
• Mascara, etc.

How much is 3.4 oz?

Now that you understand the basic concepts of the TSA liquid rule, it may help to have an idea of what constitutes 3.4 oz or 100 ml, since most people don’t naturally know how big a 3.4-ounce container or a 100 ml bottle is.

So if you’re wondering exactly how much is 3.4 oz or how big is a 100 ml bottle, we will walk through that for you here.

3.4 ounces (oz) converts to 96.388 milliliters (ml). For purposes of simplicity, the TSA rounds this up to 100 ml

Most of the toiletries you would bring on a trip come in travel-sized packages that can be bought at any drug store or grocery store. These travel-sized items are typically 3 ounces (90 ml) and generally provide enough lotion, shampoo, or toothpaste for a 5-day trip. If you’ll be traveling longer, you may need to stock up on a couple of extra bottles or plan on purchasing more upon arrival at your destination.

When you're going through airport security on your next vacation or business flight, you might notice a posted rule by the Transportation Security Administration called the 3-1-1 Rule, which dictates how much liquid travelers are allowed in their carry-on bags. Still, you might not understand exactly what this regulation means for your traveling needs.

The 3-1-1 Rule refers to three core components that govern how many liquids you can bring in your carry-on bags: Each liquid must be in a 3.4-ounce or less container ("3"), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-sized plastic bag ("1"), and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag ("1").

In sum, the 3-1-1 Rule states that you can carry as much liquid as can fit inside 3.4-ounce containers that fit inside one plastic quart-sized bag; however, you can bring as much liquid as you feel comfortable carrying in your checked bags as long as these liquids do not violate other TSA regulations that dictate what you can and cannot fly with in general.

How to Pack Your Liquids in Carry-ons

Whether you're hoping to bring your favorite shampoo or conditioner on your weekend trip or need to take contact solution on your flight, you'll need to properly pack liquids to get them through the TSA security checkpoint without hassle.

You'll want to start by either buying travel-size bottles of your favorite products or by purchasing travel toiletry bottles , which you can buy online, at most supermarkets, or home goods stores, and filling them with enough of your favorite products to get you through your trip. Then pack each of these inside a quart-sized ziplock (or other sealable) plastic bag—you should be able to fit four or five.

It's recommended that you pack this bag of bottles in your carry-on last, on top of your clothing and other times, because you'll need to pull the bag out and put it in one of the security checkpoint bins to pass through the X-ray machine. You can also stow it conveniently in an outside zip pocket for easy access.

Liquids That Are and Aren't Allowed

You might be surprised to learn that you can bring travel-size bottles of alcohol in your carry-on or that you can't carry creamy dips or spread as a snack in your suitcase if it exceeds 3.4 ounces, but knowing these rules will help you avoid additional screening at the TSA checkpoint.

You can bring blenders (with blades removed), alcoholic beverages less than 3.4 ounces that do not exceed 70 percent in alcohol content, baby food, some canned foods, and even live lobsters, but you cannot bring gel heating pads, any wet foods that exceed 3.4 ounces, ice cream of any quantity, or firearms of any type.

For the better part of two decades, we’ve limited the liquids we carry through airport security. The magic number settled upon was 3.4 ounces, or 100 milliliters, of liquid in a container—an amount that became an  international standard developed by explosives experts . 

As frequent travelers are well aware, bottles that are 3.4 ounces or less can be stashed into a single one-quart plastic bag, and each traveler is allowed one—in a rule that’s been dubbed the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Oversized liquids can still be packed, but need to go into checked-in baggage.

But as screening devices have become more savvy, there has been talk of those limits being eliminated, especially as a  recent report said the UK will scrap the rules by 2024. “The introduction of new technologies has played a significant role in how aviation security has evolved over the past 20 years, thanks to strong industry partnerships and TSA’s agility in adopting technology that enhances security and improves the passenger experience,” a TSA spokesperson says. While there’s no timeline in place yet, the agency “anticipates the limit on liquids will be lifted in the coming years.”

So in the short run, travelers still need to limit the fluids they pack in carry-ons. But, as with all rules, there are exceptions. “TSA requires additional screening to ensure the safety of these liquids,” the spokesperson says of the items. “Travelers in this group should notify security of their medically-necessary liquids.”

In general, those  exceptions need to pass a three-prong test . They need to be required during the duration of your flight or at your destination, they can’t be available at the airport in the area past security, and they can’t be available at the destination. But when it comes down to it, the  TSA says on its site , “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”

Here are some of the most common exceptions of oversized liquids that can be taken through security. 

Prescription liquids, creams, and gels

Medication that has been prescribed specifically for you is perhaps the most common item that qualifies as an exception. TSA recommends that it’s clearly labeled so there's no question about what is inside. “You are responsible for displaying, handling, and repacking the medication when screening is required,” the agency’s site dictates. Depending on the situation, medication can either be screened visually or with an x-ray machine. It may also be tested for traces of explosives.

In some situations where the officers aren’t able to properly screen the item, you may be asked to open the container and transfer it to an empty container to test, or possibly dispose of a small quantity. 

In cases where you would like to make sure the medication isn’t opened or X-rayed, simply inform the TSA officer. “Additional steps will be taken to clear the liquid and you will undergo additional screening procedures to include a pat-down and screening of other carry-on property,” the site says.

Liquid medications and contact lens solution

In general,  liquid medications that are not prescriptions and  contact lens solutions are limited to 3.4 ounces, but TSA does allow “larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip,” with the caveat you must declare them to security officers first. 

Breast milk and infant formula

Passengers traveling with infants have enough to worry about on their flights—and being able to provide the little ones with the proper nourishment should not be one of those concerns. Technically, TSA categorizes  breast milk and  baby formula as “medically necessary liquids.” The child doesn’t need to be present for the exception. 

In order to expedite the process, TSA suggests—but doesn't require—that the liquids be transported in clear and translucent bottles, so that they can be screened by the Bottle Liquid Scanners. (Those in pouches may not be able to.) While there is a chance you may be asked to open them, nothing will ever be placed in the liquid. The agency also adds that the screening process shouldn't affect the formula, but if you prefer they not be x-rayed, alternative testing means can be taken.

Baby and toddler food and drinks

In addition to breast milk and formula, food and drinks for babies and toddlers are also allowed, including puree pouches. They also technically fall into the “medically necessary” category.  Water for babies is also allowed in “reasonable quantities.” 

Liquid teethers

TSA also recognizes how important teethers are to babies and has “ liquid-filled teethers ” specifically called out as an item that can be brought through the security check.

Ice, gel, and freezer packs and other accessories to medically necessary items

Ice, gel , and freezer packs that are required to keep other medically necessary items in their required cool state are also exceptions, no matter what state they are in (solid ice or liquid gel). Additionally, IV bags or other accessories to medical supplies are also allowed. 

Hand sanitizer 

In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, one major allowance was added to the list— hand sanitizer . While they may be readily available beyond security check and at your destination, the hygiene item was added, especially for use on the plane, as some experts have said that extra precautions should be taken on airplanes and airports to prevent the spread of germs .

Until further notice, hand sanitizers of up to 12 ounces are allowed since “TSA understands that COVID-19 is at the forefront on the minds of travelers, as health officials are encouraging that individuals wash their hands frequently,” the  site says . 

Live fish in water

Assuming your  live fish in water needs more than 3.4 ounces of water, this is another exception to the rule, as long as they’re in a clear transparent containers and properly inspected by the TSA officer. 

Biological specimens 

Liquid exceptions can be made in the name of science.  Non-infectious specimens in preservative solution can be carried through if it’s for scientific research. But they’ll need to be very specifically packed.

There can be up to 30 milliliters of free liquid in a heat-sealed inner plastic bag and then no more than one liter in the outer packaging, which needs to be marked: "Scientific research specimens, 49 CFR 173.4b applies." (Specific instructions for the regulation are  here .)

Duty-free purchased items in officially sealed bags

Shopping at the airport? Those liquid souvenirs can be taken home as well, as long as they are properly sealed by the cashier in a  security tamper-evident bag (STEB). The system was “developed to allow an exemption" to liquid volume rules for items purchased at duty-free airport retailers or on board an aircraft, according to the  International Civil Aviation Organization .

The Airline Liquid Limit You Need To Know Before Flying

Your airline should inform you about the liquid limits for flying or they will be published somewhere on your airline’s website.

But it’s not your airline that sets the rules or enforces them.

It doesn’t matter if your airline is Alaska, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, or Spirit. All airlines have the same liquid allowance because the liquid regulations are set by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and enforced at the airport by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

There are actually three limits that you need to know about before flying.

Let’s take a look at them now.

TSA / Airline Carry On Rules

Your carry-on bag will be inspected at the airport security checkpoint by the TSA and they will make sure you are not exceeding the liquid allowance. Your airline won’t look inside your luggage at all.

Limit A – Travel Size Containers

The first airline liquid limit is that you must pack liquids in travel sized containers. Travel sized means bottles or containers that are 3.4 ounces or less .

If 3.4 oz strikes you as a strange amount to choose it’s because that it’s equivalent to 100 ml.

It’s the size of the container that is important, not the amount of liquid remaining in the container. So you can’t bring a 5 oz bottle when there is only 3 oz remaining inside.

Refillable travel size containers are a great money saving purchase because you can just fill them up from the big bottle you have at home. Buying travel size versions of products is expensive.

I like to use a collection of bottles and containers of different sizes. There is no sense in packing 3.4 oz of liquid if you only need 1 oz for your trip. A kit like this would be perfect:

The TSA considers liquids, gels, aerosols, pastes, and anything that you can smear or spread to be a liquid.

My favourite example of this is peanut butter . Peanuts are treated as a solid, but peanut butter is considered a liquid by the TSA.

Limit B – All Containers Must Fit Inside A Quart Size Bag

The second airline liquid limit is that all your travel size liquids must be packed in a one quart size bag .

You can buy a reusable ‘ TSA Approved Toiletry Bag ’ that isn’t actually TSA sanctioned but will work anyway. Or you can use a simple resealable bag like a Ziploc plastic baggie that has the capacity of 1 quart .

You might be able to fit 6 or 7 travel size bottles in a quart size bag. If you buy a reusable one then you’ll probably fit more since they are not actually quart-sized but you’ll probably get away with it.

Limit C – Only One Bag Per Passenger

The third airline liquid limit is that you are only permitted one plastic bag per passenger . You can’t bring two liquids bags if you are bringing two suitcases. It’s 1 bag each maximum.

There is no way around the one bag rule. If you are struggling to fit all the liquids you need in one bag the best way to deal with that is to try to substitute solid versions of products.

For example, a solid bar of soap can replace shower gel.

A solid stick deodorant can replace an aerosol spray.

You can even buy solid toothpaste tablets that might suffice until you are able to visit a local shop.

My top tip is that the TSA doesn’t consider wet wipes to be a liquid .

So if your liquid product is available in a wet wipe form then the wipes will make a great substitute and free up space in your liquids bag. Makeup cleansing wipes are a good example.

These three airline liquid rules are called the 3-1-1 by the TSA:

• 3 .4 oz containers
• 1 quart sized bag
• 1 bag per person

There also a 4th restriction about the type of liquids you can pack. Let’s call it Limit D.

Limit D – No Flammable Liquids Unless They Are Toiletries

You can’t bring flammable liquids or hazmat liquids even in containers smaller than 3.4 oz unless they are toiletries.

My favourite example of this is that you can bring bug repellant that you apply to your skin, but you can’t pack an aerosol bug killer spray even if it’s under 3.4 oz because it’s flammable and not a toiletry.

The TSA defines a toiletry as something that you use on your skin.

Exceptions To The Airline Liquid Limit

The liquid limit that your airline talks about is only for getting past the TSA security checkpoint.

It’s not a limit to how much liquid you can bring on the plane, it’s a limit to how much liquid can be in your carry-on bags when you go through the screening process at airport security.

That means that if you buy any liquids after the security checkpoint then you can bring them on the plane no matter what size they are. So you can fill up your water bottle after the TSA checkpoints.

There are also a few cases where you can bring containers larger than the 3.4 oz regulations normally permit.

• You can bring breast milk, juice, liquid foods, or drinks for infants in reasonable quantities
• On international flights you can carry duty free liquids in a secure tamper evident bag
• You can bring medically necessary liquids in containers larger than 3.4 oz and you don’t need a doctors note.

If you have a container of liquid that is larger than 3.4 ounces and you think it qualifies for an exemption then feel free to place it in a separate bin at the x-ray machine for additional screening.

Airline Checked Baggage Liquid Limits

Liquids are not limited in checked bags as strictly as they are in carry-on luggage.

Only Limit D from above applies. You cannot pack flammable or hazmat liquids in checked bags because of the fire risk.

You can pack as much beer or low strength wine as you like but you can only pack 5 litres of alcohol that is between 24% and 70% ABV. Alcohol over 70% ABV is prohibited because it’s too flammable.

Lastly any toiletry aerosols that you pack in checked luggage should be in containers smaller than 18 oz and you are only allowed to pack 70 oz per person of toiletry aerosols in checked luggage.

The Bottom Line

The liquids rule that your airline talks about is actually the FAA carry-on liquids rule that will be enforced by the TSA at the airport.

There are 3 limits or restrictions. Containers can be 3.4 oz maximum . They all need to go in a one quart size bag . And you can only bring one liquids bag per person.

There are exceptions to the regulations for medically necessary liquids or liquids for babies and infants.

What Size Liquid Can You Take on a Plane?

The TSA has a rule in place called the 3-1-1 Rule .

The 3-1-1 Rule states that “each passenger may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters .”

These containers must also fit in a 1-quart sized, resealable bag.

You are required to take this bag out of your carry on and place it in a screening bin as you go through airport security.

Note that it is the size of the container itself and not how much liquid is in the container that matters.

So, if you have a bottle that contains just 1ml of liquid inside a 4oz container, it still won’t be allowed through.

Checked Bags

Not many passengers are aware that there are restrictions on the quantity of liquids you can pack in their checked bags.

According to the TSA:

• A container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).
• The total aggregate quantity of your toiletry products must also not exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces).

No Differences For International Flights

Even though it may not be called the 3-1-1 rule worldwide, the rules remain the same if you’re flying internationally.

So regardless if you’re flying from or within Mexico, Canada, the UK, Europe or any other country, you are only allowed to pack liquids (as well as gels and aerosols) in containers that are no larger than 3.4oz/100ml in your carry on.

Airlines Follow TSA Regulations

All airlines follow TSA regulations .

So this means that regardless if you’re flying with Delta, Southwest, American Airlines, JetBlue, or any other regional or major air carrier worldwide, you are only allowed to bring liquids in containers that do not exceed 3.4oz/100ml in your carry on.

How to Pack Liquids for Flying

There are a few guidelines you should follow to make your next flight go as smoothly as possible.

• Make sure that no container you want to bring is no larger than 3.4oz/100ml.
• Buy travel-friendly products of your favorite products.
• If the company doesn’t sell travel-friendly sizes, buy your own 3.4oz/100ml containers and transfer the liquids into them.
• Consider packing non-liquid alternatives instead (you can bring a bar of soap on a plane on a plane , for example, with no restrictions. The same applies to sunscreen sticks ).
• Share toiletry space with your travel partner, as the 3-1-1 Rule applies to each passenger.
• Store your items in a clear bag that is no larger than 1 quart.
• Use your checked luggage for liquids in larger containers.

You Will Be Able to Bring 7-8 Bottles in Your Carry On

In total, you can take 32 ounces (or 1 quart) of liquids on a plane.

But as the containers themselves will take up space in the single quart-sized bag, you won’t be able to take a full 32 ounces of liquids in your carry on.

You will be able to bring about 25 ounces in total, in 7 or 8 travel-sized 3.4oz/100ml containers onto a plane in your carry on.

How Many Ounces in Total Can You Take On a Plane?

Carry on bags.

As just mentioned, you can bring 32 ounces (or 1 quart of liquids on a plane), though it will more likely be 25 ounces in 7-8 bottles.

If liquids are packed in your checked bags, each container must not exceed 18 ounces or 17 fluid ounces).

The total aggregate quantity of your toiletry products must also not exceed 70 ounces or 68 fluid ounces.

A Loophole to Bring More Than 3.4 Oz/100ml On a Plane

There is a loophole that lets you bring more than 3.4oz/100ml of liquids on a plane, though it only works with very few items and under certain circumstances.

If you are traveling with a young child or baby, you can say that the item is for them.

Of course, this will only work for bringing a water bottle on a plane and not items like alcohol, coffee or tea . 

Exceptions to the 3-1-1 Rule

There are several exceptions to the 3-1-1 Rule.

The following items, if packed in your carry on bags, are allowed to exceed 3.4 oz/100ml:

• Breast milk and formula
• Liquid medication
• Hand sanitizer
• Jumbo disinfecting wipes
• STEB items (secure, tamper-evident bags purchased at the airport)
• Cough syrup
• Gel-filled bras
• Saline solution
• Ice packs (must be frozen solid)

Liquids That Are Forbidden

There are several liquids that, even if under 3.4 oz/100ml, you are not allowed to bring on a plane in either your carry on or checked bags.

These items include:

• Most flammable liquids ( you can bring nail polish on a plane , though)
• Most toxic liquids
• Aerosols that do not qualify as toiletries
• Alcoholic Beverages over 70% ABV (140 proof)
• Insecticide
• Spray Paint
• Spray Starch
• Cooking Spray

Surprising Items That Qualify As Liquids

There are also items that you wouldn’t expect to count as liquids, but actually do.

• Peanut butter
• Hair mousse
• Snow globes

What the 3-1-1 Rule Stands For

The 3-1-1 Rule stands for 3 ounces, 1 passenger, 1 quart-sized bag.

While the limit is actually 3.4 ounces instead of 3 ounces, we guess that 3.4-1-1 Rule didn’t have the same ring to it.

Why the 3-1-1 Rule Exists

If you've booked — or are considering booking — a trip on Frontier, you may be wondering what's included and how this trip might be different from previous trips you've taken with other airlines. What fares does Frontier offer?

Frontier offers standard fares and Discount Den fares. The services that come with these fares are the same, but Discount Den fares can only be bought once you've joined Frontier's Discount Den and paid the $59.99 annual fee.

What's Frontier's Discount Den and should I join?

Frontier's Discount Den provides access to discounted fares, which are usually $10-32 less than standard fares. As a Discount Den member, you can purchase Discount Den fares for up to six passengers on your booking. And, on valid Kids Fly Free flights , one kid under 15 can fly for free for every adult Discount Den fare purchased. So, if you fly Frontier frequently, especially as a family or group of friends traveling on the same reservation, it might make sense to pay the $59.99 annual fee to join Discount Den.

Can I check a bag?

Yes, but it will cost you. Checked bags no larger than 62 linear inches and no heavier than 50 pounds can be checked for standard rates. Baggage that goes over these limits will be charged an additional $75 for exceeding weight and an additional $75 for exceeding linear inch limits.

Standard rates are charged each way and vary based on route and when you purchase. It's least expensive to purchase checked bags during booking using Frontier's website or mobile app. The next least expensive option is to purchase a checked bag before check-in using Frontier's website or mobile app, while the most expensive option is to purchase a checked bag at the boarding gate. Can I bring a carry-on bag?

Yes, but it will cost you. The only carry-on that is included in all fares is one personal item no larger than 14 inches by 18 inches by eight inches that must fit under the seat in front of you.

You can pay to bring a carry-on bag that is no larger than 24 inches by 16 inches by ten inches and no heavier than 35 pounds. Purchasing a full-size carry-on bag will get you Zone 1 boarding.

However, the cost to bring a full-size carry-on bag varies based on route and when you purchase. It's least expensive to purchase a full-sized carry-on during booking using Frontier's website or mobile app, while the most expensive option is to purchase a full-sized carry-on at the boarding gate. Can I select a seat?

Yes, but it will cost you, and the cost is per flight segment.

There are two types of seats: standard with 28-31 inch pitch and stretch with 5-7 more inches of legroom. The cost to select a seat for a particular flight is based on (1) the type of seat and (2) when you purchase the seat selection.

Seat costs are as follows:

• On Frontier's website either during booking or more than 24 hours before departure:
• Standard: from $5
• Stretch: from $15
• During web check-in:
• Standard: from $7
• Stretch: from $18
• Through Frontier's call center, at an airport ticket counter or at a self-service kiosk :

If you don't pay to select a seat, you'll be randomly assigned a seat at check-in. Frontier's website says the airline will try to seat everyone on the same reservation together, but that sitting together isn't guaranteed unless you purchase seats together during booking.

Should I purchase a bundle?

Frontier offers two bundles during booking that include some of the chargeable items discussed above. Prices for these bundles vary significantly. But, for an example, on a round-trip booking for one passenger from Atlanta to Denver with a direct flight leaving in about a month, the Perks bundle costs $130 round-trip and the Works bundle costs $166 round-trip.

The Perks bundle includes:

• One carry-on bag no larger than 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches
• One checked bag no larger than 62 linear inches
• Seat reservation for any available seat, including stretch seating
• Zone 1 boarding

The more expensive Works bundle includes:

• Everything from the Perks bundle
• Change your flight without change fees, but subject to the difference in ticket and option prices
• Get your flight refunded with no cancellation fees

Decide which of the services included in the bundle you would purchase separately to determine whether to purchase the bundle. In most cases, it will be cheaper to forgo the bundle and simply purchase the services you need.

When can I board?

If you have elite status with Frontier, you've purchased a carry-on or you've purchased the WORKS bundle, you'll board in Zone 1. If you're traveling as a family with children under three, you'll board immediately after Zone 1. Otherwise, you'll board during the remainder of the boarding process.

Can I change my flight?

Yes, but it might cost you. If you purchased the WORKS bundle or want to change your flight 60 days or more before departure, you can apply the value of your purchase to a new ticket without any penalty. You'll just need to pay the difference in fare and/or options.

Otherwise, if you want to change your flight 59 to 14 days before your departure, you'll need to pay a non-refundable change fee of $79 per passenger ($49 per passenger if your tickets were purchased before Sept. 13, 2019) plus any difference in fare and/or options. And, if you want to change your flight within 14 days of your departure -- including same-day flight changes -- you'll need to pay a non-refundable change fee of $119 per passenger plus any difference in fare and/or options.

In either case, if the new fare and/or options cost less than your original purchase, you won't get a refund or further opportunity to use this value.

What happens if I need to cancel my ticket?

If you purchased the Works bundle, you can choose to:

• Retain the value of your purchase for use within one year of the transaction date or
• Complete the Online Refund Form to have the full value returned to your purchasing card

If you cancel your flight within 24 hours of purchase, you can get a full refund with no cancellation fee as long as the ticket wasn't purchased within seven days of travel. If you cancel a ticket that was purchased within seven days of travel, the value will be held as a credit and you'll need to pay a $119 fee per passenger to use this value toward another ticket.

If you didn't purchase the Works bundle and didn't cancel within 24 hours of purchase, your booking will keep its value for 90 days as a travel credit. This travel credit can be used toward the purchase of future travel, but you'll need to pay a fee of $79 ($49 for tickets purchased before Sept. 13, 2019) per passenger if you cancel 59 to 14 days before departure or a fee of $119 per passenger if you cancel within 14 days of departure. There's no fee if you cancel 60 days or more before departure.

Tickets must be canceled before the flight's departure to retain any value.

Can I earn miles?

Yes, you'll earn one Frontier Mile per mile flown. TPG's latest valuation pegs the value of Frontier miles at 1.1 cents each. Earned miles are subject to expiration if the account does not have accrual activity at least once every 180 days or six months.

Does having elite status help?

Yes. The Frontier Miles program has three levels: Elite 20k, Elite 50k and Elite 100k. Each level is reached once a particular number of Status Qualifying Miles or Segments are accrued within a calendar year. Status Qualifying Miles can be earned via flying (one mile per mile flown) or spending on the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard (one mile per dollar spent). Note that Status Qualifying Miles aren't the same as redeemable miles.

The Elite 20k level, obtained with 20,000 Status Qualifying Miles or 25 Segments, provides the following benefits for the elite member that can make flying Frontier more affordable and more comfortable:

• Free carry-on bag
• Unlock family pooling where you can combine Frontier Miles with up to eight family members and friends to make using miles easy
• Free advanced standard seat assignment
• Upgrade to stretch seating for free if available during check-in, at the ticket counter or at the gate
• Priority boarding
• Award fees are waived when booking an award flight
• Travel fees are waived including call center reservation fee, same-day confirmed fee and same-day standby fee
• Use miles to redeem last seat available award tickets for any traveler on the elite member's booking

The Elite 50k level, obtained with 50,000 Status Qualifying Miles or 50 Segments, provides the following benefits for the elite member:

• Unlock family pooling where you can combine Frontier Miles with up to eight family members and friends to make using miles
• Free advanced standard or stretch seat assignment for the member and up to eight companions traveling on the member's booking
• Receive 25% additional redeemable mileage bonus on all eligible Frontier flights
• 50% discount on Discount Den membership, meaning an annual membership would cost $29.99

The Elite 100k level, obtained with 100,000 Status Qualifying Miles or 100 Segments, provides the following benefits:

• Complimentary the Works bundle for up to eight travel companions on the elite member's booking
• Receive 50% additional redeemable mileage bonus on all eligible Frontier flights

Does having a cobranded credit card help?

Not really, although the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard does get you Zone 2 boarding and the opportunity to earn elite status by spending on the card.

The Frontier Airlines World Mastercard has the following main benefits and a $79 annual fee:

• Five redeemable miles for every dollar spent on Frontier purchases, three miles for every dollar spent at restaurants and one mile for every dollar spent anywhere else

What credit card should I use to book my flight?

When booking travel on a low-cost carrier like Frontier, you'll likely want to use a credit card that provides travel protections as well as a high rate of return on airfare purchases . Here are four cards that offer a good combination of protection and earning when used to book eligible flights:

Personal Items: Personal items can be no larger than 14” tall, 18” wide, and 8” long. Personal items must   fit completely within the personal item portion of the bag sizer. Think purses, totes, computer bags, briefcases, and kids backpacks!

Carry-On Baggage: Carry-On Bags can be no larger than 24” tall, 10” wide, and 16” long (including handles, wheels, and straps) and no heavier than 35 pounds. Carry-on Bags may be placed in the overhead compartment or under the seat. Think large backpacks, small duffel bags and small suitcases/wheeled bags!

Checked Baggage: Checked bags must be no larger than 62 linear inches (that’s length + width + depth) and no heavier than 40 pounds. Baggage that is 41-50 pounds and 51-99 pounds will have an additional charge. Bags that exceed these limits will have an additional charge for each bag that is overweight and a separate charge for each oversized bag, and bags weighing 100 pounds or more are not accepted. 1. Razors - There’s a lot of confusion out there as to what types of razors are OK to pack in your carry-on baggage. So people ask us about this one all the time.

• Safety Razors: Because the razor blades are so easy to remove, safety razors are not permitted in your carry-on luggage with the blade. They’re fine to pack in your carry-on without the blade. The blades must be stored in your checked luggage. The same applies for straight razors.
• Disposable Razors: Disposable razors come in two types. The kind that is completely disposable (handle and all), or the kind where you replace them with cartridges. These are permissible in carry-on luggage with the blade and replacement cartridges.
• Electric Razors: Electric razors are permitted in both checked and carry-on bags.                                                

2. Batteries - Whether they’re for business, health reasons, or leisure, we all travel with gadgets, and gadgets need batteries! Here’s a rundown of different types of batteries and whether they’re permitted or not. If you have any additional questions about batteries, please reach out to the FAA.

• Dry cell alkaline batteries; typical AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, button sized cells, etc.
• Dry cell rechargeable batteries such as Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCad).
• Jump starters with lithium ion batteries.
• Lithium ion batteries (a.k.a.: rechargeable lithium, lithium polymer, LIPO, secondary lithium).
• Consumer-sized lithium ion batteries [no more than 8 grams of equivalent lithium content or 100 watt hours (wh) per battery]. This size covers AA, AAA, 9-volt, cell phone, PDA, camera, camcorder, Gameboy, and standard laptop computer batteries.
• Up to two larger lithium ion batteries (more than 8 grams, up to 25 grams of equivalent lithium content per battery) in their carry-on. This size covers larger extended-life laptop batteries. Most consumer lithium ion batteries are below this size. Lithium ion batteries that are between 101 – 160 wh are allowed in carry-on bags with airline approval.
• Lithium metal batteries (a.k.a.: non-rechargeable lithium, primary lithium). These batteries are often used with cameras and other small personal electronics. Consumer-sized batteries (up to 2 grams of lithium per battery) may be carried. This includes all the typical non-rechargeable batteries for personal film cameras and digital cameras (AA, AAA, 123, CR123A, CR1, CR2, CRV3, CR22, 2CR5, etc.) as well as the flat round lithium button cells.
• Except for lithium batteries, all the batteries allowed in carry-on baggage are also allowed in checked baggage; however, we recommend that you pack them in your carry-on bag whenever possible. In the cabin, airline flight crews can better monitor conditions, and have access to the batteries or device if a fire does occur.
• Car batteries, wet batteries, or spillable batteries are prohibited from both carry-on and checked baggage unless they are being used to power a scooter or wheelchair. If you need to pack a spare battery for a scooter or wheelchair, you must advise the aircraft operator so the battery can be properly packaged for air travel.
• Spare lithium batteries (both lithium metal and lithium ion/polymer) are prohibited in checked baggage.
• Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer batteries are the most common rechargeable cell types found in Portable Chargers. Portable chargers are allowed in carry-on bags only.
• External battery chargers/Power banks/Uninstalled or spare lithium ion batteries must be packed in carry-on bags.

For many, traveling with makeup is just as important as traveling with batteries. You’ve just gotta have it. 

• Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. You can take as many travel-sized liquids as you can comfortably fit into one quart-sized, zip-top bag. One liquids bag is allowed per passenger in carry-on bags. We don't limit the size or quantity of liquids in checked bags.

4 & 5. Shampoo & Deodorant

You’ve got to smell nice and keep your hair shiny, so it’s not surprise that many people ask about shampoo and deodorant.

• Shampoo/Conditioner and deodorant must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less in carry-on bags. You're allowed to take as many travel-sized liquids as can fit into a single quart-sized, zip-top bag. One bag is allowed per passenger in carry-on. Larger containers of such items must be placed in checked bags. Solid and powder deodorant are allowed in carry-on bags and aren't limited in size.

The Next Frontier in New York’s War on Rats: Birth Control

A new City Council bill would deploy contraceptives in hopes of reducing the rat population and protecting wildlife, like Flaco the owl, from being poisoned.

For nearly 60 years, New York City leaders have understood that they could not kill their way out of the rat problem.

Rats are prodigious breeders, with one pair having the potential to produce 15,000 descendants in a year . City officials have tried repeatedly to give them contraceptives and diminish their ranks, but the rats have prevailed.

Now, citing advancements in rodent birth control and trash storage, the City Council wants to try again.

A new bill being introduced on Thursday would require the city’s health department to deploy salty pellets that sterilize both male and female rats in two neighborhoods as part of a pilot program. The pellets would be used within so-called rat mitigation zones covering at least 10 city blocks.

The bill’s sponsor, Shaun Abreu, a council member from northern Manhattan, predicted that this attempt would be more effective than past efforts, particularly when paired with the city’s broader push to fight rats, which involves putting trash in containers and expanding composting .

“We believe that we need to take a shock-and-awe approach to the rat problem by throwing everything we have at it,” he said.

There is another potential benefit: Contraceptives are not likely to harm wildlife like Flaco, the beloved Eurasian eagle-owl whose death was blamed in part on rat poison .

“Birds of prey shouldn’t have to eat rats that have rodenticide,” said Mr. Abreu.

The major question is whether the city can finally get rat birth control right.

In 1967, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller announced a plan to give rats contraceptives by dissolving a form of estrogen used in human birth control pills in a vegetable oil solution and dipping meat and grains in it. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority sought to tackle the problem a decade ago by setting out rat contraceptives in the subway . Bryant Park tried the same thing unsuccessfully last year .

Other tactics have been used against rats — poison, traps, dry ice , ghoulish drownings , targeting so-called rat reservoirs and a rat academy to involve members of the public in eradication efforts — in what has felt at times like a Wile E. Coyote vs. the Road Runner caper. Somehow the rats always win.

While precise estimates are difficult, a pest control company said there were as many as three million rats in the city .

Joseph J. Lhota, who served as the city’s “rat czar” under former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and has opined that eliminating rats is a Sisyphean feat, praised the new bill. He said that contraceptives must be part of the solution.

“Will we ever eradicate rats? I don’t think so,” he said. “But you should do everything you can to reduce the size of the population.”

Mayor Eric Adams has made fighting rats a signature initiative. He installed his own rat czar, Kathleen Corradi , and started an ambitious plan to move trash from fetid garbage bags off the streets and into European-style containers.

Liz Garcia, a spokeswoman for the mayor, said in a statement on Wednesday that his office would review the legislation. The administration has “taken a whole-of-government approach” to fight rats, she said, adding, “we will continue to work with all of our partners in government on rat-reduction strategies.”

Mr. Abreu has been working with Loretta Mayer, a scientist who created ContraPest, a rat contraceptive that transit officials said had showed promising results when used in the subway. The bait contains active compounds that target ovarian function in female rats and lead to infertility in male rats by disrupting sperm cell production.

Dr. Mayer, who now runs a nonprofit dedicated to humane animal population control , said in an interview that the pellets were full of fat and salt and they were so delicious that rats preferred them to digging through the trash.

“It’s better than pizza,” she said.

Dr. Mayer said the greatest challenge would be scaling up to have enough pellets to distribute the contraceptives more broadly. She said the cost was low, at about $5 a pound.

Other cities have tried rat contraceptives, including Boston , Columbus, Ohio , and Hartford, Conn . Mr. Abreu said that past attempts in New York City had been unsuccessful because officials were not persistent enough. Or they used liquid bait instead of pellets, he said, and did not pair it with trash containerization, which gives rats fewer culinary alternatives.

Mr. Abreu has become an evangelist for the mayor’s “trash revolution,” and his district is where the city’s trash containerization pilot is taking place .

Some animal welfare groups support his bill, arguing that contraceptives are a more humane way of dealing with rats and will help other animals higher in the food chain.

Flaco the owl captured the city’s imagination after he escaped from the Central Park Zoo, and his death in February after a year of freedom was met with an outpouring of grief.

He died after apparently striking an Upper West Side building, but a necropsy found that he had a life-threatening amount of rat poison and pigeon virus in his system.

“Honestly, it took the death of Flaco for people to really pay attention to this issue and the fact that his tragic death could have been avoided,” said Kathy Nizzari, the chair of the Lights Out Coalition, a group dedicated to protecting wildlife. “Why is the government spending millions of dollars on poison when it doesn’t even work?”
