Quicksilver Reef Cruises  is probably one of the best known reef operators in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland and the largest operator of reef tour vessels in Tropical North Queensland. Their company motto is “Quicksilver is the Great Barrier Reef.”

The Quicksilver vessel operates out of Port Douglas (optional transfers available Palm Cove) and travels to one of the best reef sites - Agincourt Ribbon Reef. Quicksilver is the largest Wave Piercer in Cairns and is just the most favourite boat to go out on if you suffer from seasickness or if it is a windy day.  They have all the best toys, great food, great facilities and a great team of people working for them.

Quicksilver has two permanent pontoons out at Agincourt Ribbon Reef. These pontoons have all the toys such as  semi-submersible submarines , and helmet diving where you don’t even get your hair wet, scuba diving , an underwater observatory where again you experience the reef without getting wet, optional snorkel trips with a Marine Interpreter, and of course yummy morning and afternoon teas, a big buffet lunch as you work up a big appetite on the reef and enjoying the activities throughout the day.

Quicksilver has scenic helicopter flights  that take you out to the Agincourt pontoon from Port Douglas with a Fly/Cruise option or even Fly/Fly. Or while out on the pontoon you can experience the reef from above with a 10 minute scenic flight - these are popular and should be booked at time of booking your reef trip. They provide an award winning 5 star level of service 365 days of the year and cater for families with prams, people with disabilities and provide hydraulic lifts to get the guests in and out of the water. Quicksilver’s hull is designed to cut through the waves that ensures a smooth and very fast ride to the Outer Barrier Reef. Quicksilver is a very professional company and they ensure a day with 5 star service standards for all to enjoy.

All in all, it’s a wonderful day and no time to get bored at all. So much to see and do that the whole family will enjoy themselves - Plus families enjoy 2nd child free offer. *

Silversonic Reef Tour

Silversonic has a rare swim with   whales license permitting swimmers in the water with the Dwarf Minke Whales (during Whale Season) and is part of the award winning Quicksilver Group of Companies.

Silversonic travels from Port Douglas to the spectacular region of Agincourt Ribbon Reef with pick ups from your Palm Cove accommodation.

Silversonic has the luxury of owning a multitude of licenses for visiting varying reefs on the Australian Continental Shelf so you can enjoy 5 hours on the reef, visiting 3 exclusive reef sites.

Two of Silversonic’s biggest selling features are the stabilizing ride control system which is great for travelers who experience motion sickness, and the fact it also has hot water shower facilities.

As soon as you board Silversonic, you can dine on tasty fruit muffins, Danish pastries, foccacias, biscuits, tea and coffee.  You are then separated into the three groups that are snorkellers, introductory divers and qualified divers.  You will then be fitted with your equipment for the day, briefed on safety procedures and how to use the equipment properly.

On the way out to the reef, they also give a great talk on the reef which is fascinating and gets you excited about jumping in the water to meet all your new friends.  And yes the fish are very friendly.    Lots of them have been named by the boat crew as they live on certain reefs for most of their fishy lives.

During your day on Silversonic you can have underwater photographs and DVDs taken of you so you can relive the amazing experience you had.

All in all a great boat and a great boat crew as well it’s a lot of fun. Silversonic is part of the Quicksilver Group of Companies.

Green Island Tours from Palm Cove

Green Island Tour from Palm Cove

Green Island from Palm Cove is a popular reef tour option, with full day tours and half day Green Island tours departing from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal.   Green Island ferry tickets include a range of options depending on what you'd like to do during your Island day trip.  A half day Green Island trip includes your choice of one activity or including both snorkelling and glass bottom boat tour with options for morning departures, or 1pm departures from Cairns. While on Green Island enjoy a self guided eco-walk, snorkel, relax - or check out the optional activities such as a scenic helicopter flight , kayak hire, Seawalker, Parasailing.   If you'd like to try the  Seawalker  at Green Island, ensure to book in advance to avoid missing out.  There is also a great option to include both Green Island and Outer Reef in the one day.  Enjoy Green Island for 2 hours then continue onto to a Pontoon all in the one day.  It's a great one day combo tour  to include it all!  How to get to Green Island from Palm Cove?  Private transfers can be arranged at an additional cost, or if you have a hire car during your stay you can self park at the nearby carpark in Cairns CBD for a fee. Ensure to leave extra time to park and walk to the Reef Fleet Terminal.

green island tours from palm cove

Palm Cove Great Barrier Reef tours are available with coach or self transfers to Cairns or Port Douglas, as all reef tours to the Great Barrier Reef depart from these Marinas.   There is a wide selection of full day and half day reef tours suitable for swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers, families and even the non-swimmers!  You may wish to read some helpful Great Barrier Reef  Travel Tips and useful information on choosing which Reef Trip is suitable for you.   Contact the local Palm Cove holiday specialists who can arrange your Palm Cove reef tour along with your Accommodation and any further advice and bookings for your holiday in Palm Cove.

The Great Barrier Reef has no surf due to the vast amount of coral reef; it can just get a little choppy on very windy days. All the boats have staff members on safety watch for the whole period of time you are in the water.

Before you go on a snorkel tour  you are given full instructions on how to use the equipment safely. And if you feel you are in a spot of trouble or tired, they will show you how to get their attention.

All boats provide you with both morning and afternoon tea, as well as a lovely buffet lunch, which is included in your ticket price. Any extras such as packets of chips, sweets, or alcoholic beverages are payable by cash on the vessel.

The vessels have relaxation areas for those that want to catch the sunshine or those that would like to stay away from the sun’s rays. Bathroom facilities are on board and some boats have showers and locker facilities.

Boats that go to permanently moored pontoons on the reef offer all the toys for the day: semi-submersible submarines for non-swimmers to view the fish, coral, snorkellers and divers; glass bottom boats an alternative for the non-swimmers; and helmet diving if you want to go to the ocean floor without getting your hair wet.

You can even take a scenic helicopter flight from the pontoon over the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef which is simply and amazing experience.

If you suffer severely from seasickness, choose either a larger vessel called the Wave Piercer or a boat that has built in stabilizers which ensure a better ride across the ocean. Otherwise choose a motor powered catamaran. This will provide more stability than a single hull.

Each vessel offers passengers a ginger tablet to assist with motion sickness. For some stronger alternative medication, you can go to the chemist at the Clifton Village Shopping Centre, which is just five minutes drive or a 20 minute beach walk away.

As mentioned earlier, all Great Barrier Reef tours offer pick ups from Palm Cove for trips to the Great Barrier Reef from both Cairns and Port Douglas.

Please note  you will not be permitted to purchase alcohol until all guests are out of the water and the vessel is preparing for the journey home. The same goes for scuba diving.  You will not be permitted to scuba dive if the crew perceives you have had too much alcohol  the night before  as this would put your life and possibly theirs in danger.

Great Barrier Reef Facts

Did you know the Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef structure in the world? It extends for 2300 kilometers along the north-eastern coast of Australia and consists of about 2900 individual reefs—covering an area about the same size as the United Kingdom, half the State of Texas or the length of the entire Japanese Island chain.

Wow it’s going to take some snorkeling to cover this area on your holiday!

Pontoons on the Outer Barrier Reef

Larger vessels are great for groups of families and friends, travelers who suffer motion sickness, little children and for the non-swimmers. The larger boats go out to permanently moored interactive pontoons on the edge of the Barrier Reef.

Some of these pontoons have permanent staff who live here. They maintain the pontoon on a daily basis and keep off unwelcome visitors.

They also do some important Marine Biology research. These pontoons have a lot of technical equipment on board which the Australian Government, Weather Bureau and Universities who undergo Marine Studies utilize constantly.

They provide invaluable information on the conditions of Marine Life, under water currents etc.  These outer barrier reef pontoons are used regularly for large Conference and Incentive groups for early morning breakfasts prior.

If you were so inclined or wealthy enough, you could charter a helicopter and have the whole pontoon with breakfast all to yourself to make a romantic proposal to a loved one.

These pontoons have all the toys for the swimmers and non swimmers like semi-submersible submarines, glass bottom boats, underwater observatory, and helmet diving. You can book to go on a snorkel tour with a qualified Marine Biologist or Marine interpreter.

Taking a Scenic Flight on the Great Barrier Reef

You can choose to fly in a helicopter out to the Great Barrier Reef and cruise back on the boat or vice versa. Or enjoy a scenic flight when you are out at the reef.

When you get to experience the view from above in the helicopter, you will be amazed at the colours and how close the coral is to the surface. The marine life makes it even more exciting for great photos to take back home and share with friends.

It’s a must do activity, just like swimming with the whales . How many times in your life can you do this? Just think about it and just do it. You can’t take it with you.

But you definitely need to book in advance and you need to disclose your true weight .

Yes, your true weight, otherwise you may not be granted take off if you have greatly underestimated your weight which is then combined with other passengers if you are doing a shared helicopter charter.

Think of the great pictures you will get!

Great Barrier Reef Tours From Palm Cove - Dive & Snorkel 3 Reefs Off Port Douglas

green island tours from palm cove

Poseidon Port Douglas Great Barrier Reef Tours

During the annual whale migration season Poseidon has a Whale License allowing ten snorkellers at a time to be in the water and have close encounters with little Minke whales.

What can we say... No wonder the  Silversonic and Poseidon reef boats are so popular considering they are the only ones in Tropical North Queensland with the “whale swimming permits” .

Poseidon is the same sized vessel as Silversonic. Poseidon travels to the Outer Barrier Reef area and Agincourt Ribbon Reef traversing three different spots each day of the year.

Poseidon does not travel to the same reef every day as they like to spread the human traffic all over the reef to give it an opportunity to re-generate and show off the region with its variety of reef structures.

During the annual whale migration season, which is normally July  to September (this can extend either side, subject to water temperatures) Poseidon extends a long line of rope off the side of the boat that allows ten snorkellers at a time to be in the water and have close encounters with these little Dwarf Minke whales.

The absolute thrill of a lifetime! You could be innocently snorkeling away and up pops a Dwarf Minke to have a look at you! Wow!

Poseidon has a very good reputation with the locals and visitors alike  as it is a part of the Quicksilver group of companies.

Half Day Green Island Ferry Tour

Firstly you need to choose your departure time from Cairns from the 3 options of 8.30am / 10.30am /13.00pm

Our advice for families that wish to add on the extra optional activities is to choose the 10.30am departure as the timing on this Green Island tour will allow you to add the helicopter scenic flight (Infant age 3 must pay child price), a scuba dive or a Seawalker helmet dive.

If your idea of a half day tour to a tropical island is purely for relaxation then take the 8.30am or the 13.00pm Green Island ferry boat tour.

Whilst booking online you may choose for a coach pick up from your hotel or you may use the public car park for your rental car that is just next to the Reef Fleet Terminal.

We recommend you park underneath the Pier Shopping Centre as that will keep your car cool for the day and you pay your parking fee on the way out.

Boarding Your Green Island Ferry Tour

Once you have made your online booking and have your ferry boat tickets you will see that you need to check in at the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street Cairns at least 1 hour prior to departure time.

This will enable you to get set and relaxed for the next few hours of your half day Great Barrier Reef tour and plan your arrivals first activities.

The crew will be serving tea and coffee as a welcome gesture and once the boat is underway they will give everyone a safety briefing and lessons on how to use snorkel gear.

The crew will answer all questions you may have and are prepared to assist at all times should the need arise.

Arriving Green Island

Should you have booked optional extra Green Island activities the boat crew would have given you allocated times and places to meet to complete your activities.

Otherwise all guests depart the boat and head off to the dive shop and collect all snorkel gear and then head to the island lagoons and begin their snorkel adventures

Please note: For scuba diving and Seawalker you will be subject to completing a Medical Questionairre and for the helicopter scenic flights (Infant age 3 must pay child price) there may be weight requirements.

Things You May See On Green Island

Green Island is a turtle nesting island so it is highly likely if you are out snorkelling or scuba diving you very well may run into one of the resident sea turtles.

During the months of July to August it is the prime time for the annual Humpback and Dwarf Minke Whales migration and the channel between Green Island and Cairns is frequently visited by breaching whales showing off to each other to the delight of our guests, so make sure you have your camera at the ready at this time.

On the island we have many non-flight birds and many migratory birds so if you are an ornithologist or twitcher then you may well just be in heaven on this half day island tour.

We have no snakes but we do have the little cute lizards that simply love the sun and the tropics.

Marineland Melanesia is a high recommendation from us as you will see the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.

His name is Cassius and he is simply awesome so you have to see him for yourself to believe it!

As you are in one of the world’s most iconic aquariums your snorkel tour will have you seeing a myriad of fish and corals dependent on how far away from the island you dare to snorkel.

As the island is like a pyramid coming up from the ocean floor the water immediately around the island is warmers so the corals tend to be softer and less vibrant in colour.

As you get into the deeper colder water the corals thrive and this is where the hard corals can be found along with the brilliantly brightly coloured fish and marine life.

If you are not a confident swimmer always ensure you have on a bouyancy jacket or a noodle to keep you floating above the water

A half day on Green Island is sometimes never enough as there is so much to see and do and if you and your family are quite active we recommend our full day Green Island Tour

Accommodation Return Transfers

In Palm Cove you can choose from small studio suites for short stays or full penthouse suites with cooking facilities, private swimming pools and spas or you can even rent a luxurious private holiday house with most of the holiday accommodation is located beach side or walking distance to the beach.

Port Douglas is known due to the publicity that surrounded its development as an international holiday destination in the heady days of excesses in the 80’s when luxury resorts where built which in turn attracted the rich and famous and also more developers to build the wide choice of holiday options we have today. Even though Port Douglas is still on the radar of celebrities and movie makers you can still feel its warmth and laid back charm that only the tropics can offer.

The Atherton Tablelands are a destination for the tourist wanting to take a scenic drive or for the couple looking for that quaint little romantic getaway in a bed and breakfast or tree house cabin. The quality of the accommodation is very high and most accommodation places are located near the scenic attractions and the places where tourists can get involved in all the things there is to see and do on the Atherton Tablelands

The whole family really loved the Kuranda train and Skyrail and we upgraded to the Gold Class on the train and Diamond View on the Skyrail. Spent lots of time in Kuranda exploring this lovely place it was great thank you

Went and had a great day at Josephine Falls sliding down the granite rock slide was awesome but the water from the mountain bloody freezing well worth the trip it was a blast!

The family saw this tour to the rainforest and said they want to book it so we booked on line in Dubai and we are very happy we did. Billy Tea driver very good information enjoyed tour greatly thank you Adhil

We had good time Jungle Surfing with the family. Great for the young one fun on the hampster wheel thank you Adhil

Just got off the magnificent ocean freedom machine. What a vessel, what wonderfull helpful staff. I had dived before in Tahiti 20 years ago and felt comfortable, but today I could get a grip of it and with as much help and reassurance from the staff I couldn't dive today. No matter at all as the snorkelling is amazing and the barracuda swimming around the back of the boat was truly amazing. There are 4 different places to relax and we used them all at some point during the day. Money very well spent and I would recommend this to anyone at any level of competence.

The Cairns Green Island Reef Cruise

Our fleet of Green Island boats are air-conditioned wide bodied catamarans with spacious, luxurious cabins and decks to enjoy Queensland's warm, tropical climate.

Our crew will have you on Green Island in under 45 minutes after departure. Whichever half day or full day reef tour option you choose, your time spent at Green Island will be the ultimate island getaway.

Full Day or Half Day Great Barrier Reef Tours

Whether you want to stay for a full day or merely spend a half day tour on Green Island , our half day and full day Green Island Reef tours will have a cruise departure time to suit you.

Do as little or as much as you please. Green Island Reef tours are fun for the whole family, as there is so much to see and do for all ages in the one day.

What is there to see on Green Island?

Even if you are not a swimmer you can still see the Great Barrier Reef up close. The choice of enjoyable activities on and around Green island include snorkeling, exploring aboard the glass bottom boat, introductory and certified scuba diving, trips aboard the semi-submersible coral viewing tour, Marineland Melanesia where you see the largest crocodile in captivity and sometimes rescued Green Sea Turtles, browsing through Green Island Resort shops, beach hire activities such as canoeing or surf skiing, and so much more.

As you travel to Green Island you will be presented with an informative snorkeling demonstration and presentation on how you can make the most of your time at Green Island.

The licensed bar offers refreshments all day long, and a buffet lunch, a la carte restaurant and snack bars are located on the island for meals and in between snacks and beverages for those who have chosen the full day option.

Visitors may choose to visit some of the shops for access to further activities, such as 'Beach Hire' for hiring lounge chairs, umbrellas, volleyballs, canoes, surf skis and windsurfing skis.

Great Barrier Reef Glass Bottom Boat Tours

A favourite among Great Barrier Reef tour enthusiasts is the glass bottom boat coral viewing tour with fish feeding and commentary.

This commentated reef tour shows passengers how truly diverse the Great Barrier Reef coral gardens really are, along with how they interact with the wonderful array of sea life.

Things get exciting in the water when the fish feeding begins from the side of the glass bottom boat . The glass bottom boat carries up to 35 passengers, and lasts 30 minutes.

Great for the kids and the whole family and again let's those non-swimmers enjoy the delights of the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling Tours

Snorkelling and swimming in the clear cool sapphire blue island waters, at your leisure from the sheltered, sandy beach, or choose instead to go on a supervised snorkeling trip.

The supervised snorkelling trip takes those wishing to snorkel to the wonders of the outer edge of Green Island Reef for a trip that treats participants to an extraordinary panorama of marine life.

We highly recommend you take this guided snorkel tour if you want to see some spectacular coral as the reef around Green Island is very shallow and coral thrives in deeper colder water.

Scuba Diving- Seawalker Helmet Diving

Scuba diving is available for both accredited and first time introductory scuba divers. Scuba divers are taken to the spectacular outer edge of gorgeous Green Island reef for their unforgettable diving experience.

Those wanting to experience the wild side of diving can opt to go Seawalker Helmet Diving - an innovative way of seeing the reef! The Seawalker is ideal for both swimmers and non-swimmers between the ages of 10 and 70.

Helmet divers walk along a pre-determined track at the bottom of the reef, coming face to face with the Great Barrier Reef's coral and fish life. This is where you willl meet Gavin the very famous photo bombing Parrot fish.

Helmet divers receive a 10 minute briefing before beginning their hands-on journey under the sea! This activity must be pre-booked and a medical questionaire completed before diving.

Green Island Day Use Facilities

As we own the lease to Green Island our tour passengers have the privilege of the use of the island swimming pool and locker facilities.

Picnics and day-use areas are provided on the island for visitors, which include much needed facilities such as toilets, showers, telephones and food.

The northern side of the island has a patrolled swimming area where visitors can immerse themselves safely in the glistening ocean.

Green Island also has short and easy walking tracks through the National Park, the most popular of which being the 1.3km boardwalk that takes hikers from the jetty and resort area of the island through the rainforest to the south-east beach, which usually takes between 20-50 minutes to complete on a return trek.

There are self-guided walk brochures offered at the Green Island Resort information counter that allow visitors to explore Green Island at their own pace.

This convenience makes the island a popular destination for half day or full day reef trippers from Cairns and North Queensland.

Full day tours depart at 8.30am and 10.30am, allowing 5 to 7  hours on Green Island. Half day trips leave either in the morning or in the afternoon, departing at either 8.30am, 10.30am or 1pm, and allow visitors to Green Island for 2-3 hours enjoying this magical island paradise.

Coach transfers from Cairns and Cairns Northern Beaches hotels can also be arranged for this option.

All full day and half day Great Barrier Reef tours must be booked at least 48 hours in advance of your travel date, and all tours are operated in English unless otherwise specified.

Reef cruises operate daily from Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland, with a choice of optional extras that also should also be pre-booked especially during peak periods of travel like the school holidays.

What to Bring

Passengers are advised to bring along sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, swimming costumes, credit cards or driver's licenses (for deposits on snorkeling gear), and cash for drinks and snacks. Sunscreen and souvenirs can all be conveniently purchased from onboard the boats themselves.

Environmentally Friendly Reef Cruise

We are Australia's most awarded marine tour operator and we have made a large effort to be highly environmentally-conscious, and have built our boats engines accordingly.

In further efforts to remain eco-friendly, we regularly undertake comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions audits as part of the Australian Government's Green house Challenge Plus program and the Tourism Tropical North Queensland Planet Safe partnership program.

Green Island beaches have in the past won two awards in the annual Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge, "Cleanest Beach" and "Resource Recovery Award", ensuring all visitors are treated to pristine beaches, water and reef.

Green Island Ecology

Green Island has been one of Cairns' primary tourist attractions for nearly fifty years. Originally named "Dabuukji " by the local Aboriginal people, Green Island was formed by waves of sand deposits, coral and other debris moving onto coral foundations approximately 6,000 years ago.

Seeds and spores carried from the mainland by the wind and birds have fertilized the island and enabled the unique growth of plant life.

The rainforest on Green Island supports a diverse group of birds and insects.

Green Island is home to 126 native plant species, a myriad of birdlife. The surrounding coral reef is surrounded by mesmerizing towers of kaleidoscopic coral gardens.

The outer edge of Green Island reef is home to multitudes of corals and marine life, including giant clams, fish, turtles, starfish, stingrays, sea anemones, eels, sponges, sea urchins and other reef life.

Green and hawksbill turtles can also be seen offshore.

You can rest assured that your visit to Green Island will be filled with memorable experiences with the local wildlife as you get a chance to observe them up close in their natural habitat.

Today there is a rich diversity of vegetation on Green Island that includes beach and dry coastal plants, the most diverse of all the coral cays in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The island is covered in tropical vine forest that is supported by both rainwater and a small freshwater lens that is located beneath the island itself. In some places, the canopy of the island's rainforest can reach up to 25 metres in height!

The small coral cay island is approximately 15 hectares in size and has a circumference measuring roughly 1.5 kilometers.

The edges of the island are a combination of compacted coral and elegant sandy coral beaches. The island's interior is predominantly rainforest, and has plenty of space for people to escape to.

Green Island Travel Tip: Although the snorkelling off the beach at Green Island is fun you are encouraged to take the guided snorkelling adventure, glass bottom boat to enable you to see the coral and marine life at its best due to the fact that Green Island is a shallow water Island.

Green Island offers a fun full day tour or half day tour to suit the whole family and fold up prams are welcome if you are travelling with little one's.
