Guangxi Travel Guide - How to Plan a Trip to Guangxi

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has fantastic and varied natural scenery (stunning karst hills and caves, larger forested mountains, crystal clear rivers, waterfalls and sunny beaches) and a wealth of minority culture.

With a total area of about 230,000 square kilometers (89,000 square miles), Guangxi is blessed with great topography. Limestone covers half of its total area. With its subtropical climate, Guangxi is suitable for people to travel any time of the year. See Guilin Weather, Nanning Weather and Beihai Weather.

Guangxi is situated in south China, and is adjacent to Yunnan Province to the west, Guizhou Province to the north, Hunan Province to the northeast, Guangdong Province to the east and Vietnam to the southwest.

Coastal Landscapes in the South

Guangxi has the ocean to the south, and the most famous Guangxi seaside destinations are located on the Gulf of Tonkin (the Beibu Gulf), such as Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang.

Things like plenty of sunshine, blue sea and beautiful islands are what we hope for from coastal holiday areas, and Guangxi won't disappoint. With Beihai City being on an estuary of the Beibu Gulf, Guangxi provides tourists with wonderful marine ecology and exploration opportunities, coral, seaside culture, marine sports and island cruises.

Having a moderate climate, the coastal cities are best for travelers in Guangxi any time of the year, especially during the period from November to February, when the weather in the north approaches freezing.

Karst Landscapes in the North

High above sea level, Northern Guangxi features karst topography, notably numerous mesas, sheer white cliffs and grottoes. Guilin is the representative city of North Guangxi, and is a popular tourist city for people from all over the world.

The picturesque karst landscapes along the Li River down from Guilin to Yangshuo are the best, and a cruise on the Li River is an unforgettable experience. Other karst attractions include Reed Flute Cave, Crown Cave, Elephant Truck Hill, Moon Hill and many many more weird and wonderful caves and hills.

Yangshuo Town has the largest density of expats in Guilin. Its idyllic location on the Li River and its holiday atmosphere are a great attraction. West Street is famous for its density of Western tourists.

Ethnic Minority Culture

With a total population of 50 million, Guangxi is multiracial province which is home to 18 million minority citizens, and the Zhuang Minority is the largest minority in China. Other minority groups include Yao, Miao, Tong, Maonan, Yi and Shui. Different minorities have different cultures, and to explore the unique characteristics of each minority group will surely bring you unexpectedly pleasant surprises.

Located between the tropical and subtropical regions, Guangxi has different weather in different cities. Generally speaking, Guangxi has hot and humid summers with lots of rain. The average July temperature is 29 °C (84 °F). Winter is mild and short with an average temperature of 12 °C (53 °F).

Spring, summer and autumn in Guangxi are characterized by plenty of sunshine, moderately high temperature and abundant rainfall, during when Guangxi is best for tourists in almost all the cities.

The best time to visit Guilin is the period from April to August, when the temperature is mild and rainfall is appropriate, and the Li River enjoys the most wonderful look during that time. When winter comes, Guilin becomes cold, yet tourists can still travel to Beihai, the city located within the tropical region, to enjoy a warm winter there.

Later, I continue explaining why you should visit Guangxi, how to reach there, which cities to visit, scenic spots, a little bit about the food, and more.

Chinese Name: 广西 Location: South of China Provincial capital: Nanning Area: Around 236,700 sq. km. Population: Around 48 million Ethnic groups: Han, Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Dong Famous cities: Nanning, Guilin, Beihai, Yangshuo, Liuzhou, Yulin Borders to: Vietnam, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangdong

Located in the Southern Parts of China, Guangxi offers spectacular scenery and landscapes, including rivers, mountains, rice paddies, and caves. It’s also home to many ethnic minorities and offers much to see for foreign tourists.

Despite being an autonomous region, it’s relatively easy to travel in Guangxi and you don’t need any special permissions. The location of the province is also good as the weather is cool during the summers and winters are mild. The size of the province is not too big either for that matter and only around 15% of Xinjiang province. Yet, its population is almost twice as big as Xinjiang’s.

The most popular cities are lined up in a row with a short distance in between each other. You won’t need to sit on a train for 30 hours to simply reach a new destination, which is sometimes required in bigger provinces like Xinjiang.

As Guangxi borders to Vietnam, you can easily travel from northern Vietnam into China via Guangxi, or the other way around. Its landscapes and culture are similar to that of northern Vietnam, which is not strange as the region is known as the Baiyue (“Hundred Yue”, Vietnamese: Bách Việt) to the Chinese.

The region first became part of China during the Qin dynasty.

It’s most common that travelers go to Guangxi after they have finished traveling in Vietnam, or they start traveling elsewhere in China first, before continuing to Guangxi.

Most travelers start in some of the bigger cities as it’s cheaper to fly there from overseas and later move around China by train or domestic flights. Let’s start and see how you can reach Guangxi by flight from within China or from overseas.

Going to Guangxi by flight

If you’re overseas or a province too far away from Guangxi, you might want to take an international or domestic flight. When taking the flight, you’ll most likely arrive in Guilin or Nanning, at least if you fly from overseas.

These cities are the only ones that have international airports.

If you fly domestically, you will most likely arrive in any of these cities as well, even if you can find domestic airports in other cities, including Baise, Beihai, Wuzhou, and Hechi.

If you fly to China from Vietnam (Hanoi) you might want to start in Nanning and continue your way upwards in China, towards Guilin. On the way, you’ll find most of the scenic spots, cities, and counties you should visit in Guangxi.

Going to Guangxi by train

I like to travel by train in China as it’s cheaper and you’ll be able to enjoy astonishing scenery on the way. Simply put, it’s an experience on its own.

Luckily, you can reach Guangxi by train from Hanoi, Guangzhou, Hunan, and plenty of other places in China.

If you travel from Guangzhou, you can take the Guangzhou-Nanning high-speed train which will take you to Guangxi in a bit more than 3 hours. The distance is around 570 kilometers and the train stops in Nanning, Binyang, Guigang, Guiping, and Wuzhou, for example. Train tickets start from 169 RMB (24 USD).

If you depart from Hanoi, you can take a direct train of China Railway and reach Nanning. It takes around 12 to 13 hours and will set you back 45 to 55 USD. During this ride, you’ll see the beautiful landscapes of northern Vietnam and Southern China as you make your way through over the Dong Dang border, passing through Lang Son Province.

Another option is to take the bullet train from Changsha, which is the provincial capital of Hunan, to Nanning. The distance is around 870 kilometers and it will take you 5.5 to 6.5 hours to reach Nanning. Tickets start from 302 RMB (43 USD) for the standard class.

You can travel to Guangxi pretty much all year round, but the summers have much rain and temperatures average at 27 to 29 degrees Celsius during hot days. At the same time, winters can be cold and temperatures can drop down to 6 degrees celsius.

Having said that, the best time to travel to Guangxi is during the spring and autumn. The best months are April, May, August, September, and October.

Looking at Guilin and Yangshuo, two of the most popular cities/counties (more about these later), the best time to go there is from late March to May and late September throughout November. During this time, the weather is mild and there’s less precipitation.

Accommodations in Guangxi

There are many travel guides and online portals available online where you can book hotel nights. If you look for accommodation in Guangxi, I recommend you checking Agoda, Trip, and Booking . They have plenty of options available and with great discounts.

Agoda is one of the most popular options among travelers in Asia as they provide the best offers for hotel-bookers in the region. The website also has a big hotel network in China and better than that of Booking. The only drawback of using Agoda is that you sometimes have difficulties finding accommodation in some parts of China, especially in smaller cities and remote areas.

Booking is a renowned hotel-booking website, it’s one of the biggest in the world. Having said that, the coverage and hotel-network is generally smaller than Trip and Agoda. I still recommend you to check their website if you look for accommodation in Guangxi as they can have good offers on display.

There are plenty of hotel booking websites available in China and Trip is one of the biggest and most popular one. Some of the benefits of using Trip is that you can handle payments with non-Chinese banks and the layout it’s nice. For the record, Trip offers the best coverage in all of China when comparing these three websites.

One of the disadvantages of using Trip is that some hotels listed cannot host foreigners and sometimes there are few international hostels available.

Hotel prices in Guangxi

According to Booking.com and its prices, 3-star hotels cost around 34 USD per night on average. 4-star hotels, on the other hand, cost 69 USD per night on average.

If you want a more luxurious experience, 5-star hotels cost around 132 USD per night on average, based on Booking.com prices.

If you’re on a restricted budget, you should also have a look at hostels, which can be a great option if you want to interact with other travelers and save money.

Guangxi is comparably small and the land area is around 236,700 square kilometers. Compare that yo Xinjiang, which is 1.6 million square kilometers. Thus, it will be easier for you to get around in Guangxi and you can travel the whole province in a couple of weeks.

Below I’ve listed some of the most popular cities and spots among travelers in Guangxi.

Nanning is the provincial capital of Guangxi and located in the Southwestern parts of the province. The city has almost 7 million inhabitants and many tourists arrive here by plane.

There are plenty of things to see in Nanning and I recommend you to stay here for a couple of days to enjoy some of its local attractions. Below I’ve listed my top picks.

Detian Waterfall

Detian Waterfall is not actually in Nanning, but around 145 kilometers to the West and just at the border to Vietnam. It’s easiest to reach the Detian waterfall by bus.

There’s one shuttle bus that goes directly to the waterfall every day from Nanning Langdong Bus Station. The bus generally leaves at 9 AM and returns at 3:30 PM. The ride takes around 3 hours.

As Guilin, Yangshuo , and most other cities and counties are located in Northeastern Guangxi, you better visit Detian after you departed from Hanoi for China or after you arrived in Nanning.

The waterfall is 200 meters wide and the areas around it amazing. Not only can you enjoy this grand scenery, but also ride on bamboo rafts, passing into Vietnam. You can see rural parts of Vietnam on the other side and the ancient boundary marker.

Nanhu Lake Park

Nanhu Lake Park has a relaxed atmosphere, going here during the morning or sunset is probably your best option. The park is located in the southeast of Nanning City and the home many subtropical plants, including palm trees, Chinese fan palm, and cajeput.

You should also have a look at the Bonsai Garden and the Orchid Garden. Watch elders exercising and couples going for a romantic walk in this peaceful area, before heading back for lunch or dinner.

Mt. Qingxiu

Mt. Qingxiu is referred to as the green lungs of Nanning and offers a splendid view, it also has a big Chinese Pagoda on the top. Tourists flock the Mt. Qingxiu and other mountains around Nanning during spring and when the flowers are blooming. They also come here to watch the peach blossom.

Guilin is located in Northeastern Guangxi and surrounded by various counties and cities that you should visit while in Guangxi. The city has around 5 million inhabitants and a land area of 27,809 square kilometers.

Commonly, travelers arrive either in Longsheng or in Guilin before continuing further into Guangxi province and to places like Yangshuo.

Li River stretches from Guilin to Yangshuo and many travelers ride on the river when going to the latter one. The cruise is around 83 kilometers long and takes 4 to 5 hours, it’s a perfect activity and means of transportation when traveling between the cities.

According to National Geographic, it’s one of “the world’s top 10 watery wonders”.

In the first section of the trip, you can enjoy the following scenery: Elephant Trunk Hill, Chuanshan Park, Daxu Ancient Town, and Ox Gorge.

A guide can explain more about the different scenery in each section, be sure to bring a camera and more than one camera memory card!

Longsheng’s Longji Rice Terraces

The Longsheng Rice Terraces are located around 100 kilometers away from Guilin and a popular attraction among travelers. It’s not strange, as it’s probably one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The terraces cover many village areas in Longsheng, including Jinkeng (Dazhai), Pingan, Ancient Zhuang Village (Guzhuang Zhai), Huangluo Red Yao Village, and more. It’s suitable for hiking and taking photographs.

Yangshuo is located merely 65 kilometers from Guilin, travelers usually spend some days here before continuing to the next destination. Yangshuo is frequently featured in Chinese paintings due to its breathtaking nature and unique culture.

If you go to Yangshuo, you can ride on bamboo rafts on the Yulong River, bike by the rice paddies, attend local cooking classes, participate in outdoor activities, and more.

Yangshuo West Street

West Street is the oldest street in Yangshuo and has more than 1,400 years of history. The street has many small shops, a high density of foreigners, and offers a unique culture. From here, you can also see the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Every year, around 100,000 foreigners visit this street.

Moonhill is located around 8 kilometers from Yangshuo and a popular site among travelers.

Simply put, it’s a 230-meter high hilltop with a round hole throughout the hill, resembling a full moon, thereby its namesake. Many tourists visit this spot for rock climbing or hiking.

There’s a lot of nature and vegetation around the hill that you can visit while there.

Beihai is a seaport and has been an important city throughout China’s trading history. Interestingly, it’s projected that the city is the fastest-growing city in the world from 2006 to 2020.

Beihai is mostly famous for having the best beaches in China, Silver Beach, with fine sand and clean water.

Sanjiang Dong

Sanjiang Dong is an autonomous county and the region was originally inhabited by a local minority, the Dong people. The county is located 1.5 hours from Longsheng Rice Terrace and around 4.5 hours from Guilin by bus.

Weizhou Island

Weizhou Island is the biggest volcanic island in China and located some nautical miles from Beihai city center. Despite being a big desolate, the island is famous for its volcanic lava, coral, beaches, and sea erosion landscapes.

The Crocodile Crater Park along with the Great Church Tourism Zone are two of the must-see sites on the island.

The food in Guangxi isn’t as famous compared to Sichuan , that said, there are many tasty and interesting dishes that you should give a try.

It’s light and sometimes spicy, but not as light and sweet as the food in Guangdong. From a personal point of view, the many dishes resemble the food in Vietnam.

Some of its most popular dishes include:

  • Yangshuo Beer Fish
  • Taro Pork and Fat Roll
  • Bitter Melon and Egg (goes perfect with rice)
  • Stuffed Li River Snails
  • Deep Fried Fish Hot Pot

Guangxi Travel Guide

Peculiar karst landform, brilliant cultural relics and rich ethnic customs make Guangxi unique and charming.

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Called "Gui" for short, has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It belonged to the Yue region during the Spring and Autumn period, then was divided into tow counties named Guilin and Xiang in Qin Dynasty. It was first established as a province in Song Dynasty, got the name Guangxi in Qing Dynasty. In 1958, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was set up. Its location in southern China, along its border with Vietnam, and mountainous terrain, has made it one of the border frontiers of Chinese civilization.

We are very satisfied with the tour - Tour gudie, driver and the agency (Wendy). Always felt safe and well protected! Thank you!

Guangxi unfolds south from the cool highlands it shares with Guizhou to a tropical border abutting Vietnam. Up in the northeast, the pick of the province’s peak-and-paddy-field landscape is concentrated along the Li River , down which you can cruise between the city of Guilin and the travellers’ haven of Yangshuo. Easily accessible, this has become a massive tourist draw, but remoter hills just a few hours north around Longji and Sanjiang are home to a mix of ethnic groups, whose architecture and way of life make for a fascinating trip up into Guizhou province, hopping between villages on public buses. Indeed, the further you get from the heavily promoted Guilin-Yangshou tourist corridor, the more places you’ll find which remain under-exploited – and more enjoyable for it.

Ping An to Dazhai hike

Diagonally across Guangxi, the provincial capital Nanning provides a base for exploring Guangxi’s southwestern corner along the open border with Vietnam, heartland of China’s thirteen-million-strong Zhuang nationality. They constitute about a third of the regional population and, although largely assimilated into Chinese life today, archeological evidence links them with Bronze Age rock friezes west of Nanning at Ningming. Nearby are a couple other major draws: the Detian Waterfall, which actually pours over the Vietnamese border, and the massive limestone sinkholes at Leye.

Though subject to fiercely hot, humid summers, Guangxi’s weather can be deceptive – it actually snows in Guilin about once every ten years. Another thing of note is that the Zhuang language, instead of using pinyin, follows its own method of rendering Chinese characters into Roman text, so you’ll see some unusual spelling on signs – “Minzu Dadao”, for example, becomes “Minzcuzdadau”.

Tailor-made trips for   China

If you fancy seeing more of the countryside between Nanning and Vietnam, Hua Shan is well worth the slight effort. Set in a beautifully isolated spot where tall karst peaks flank the Zuo River, waterfront cliffs at Hua Shan are daubed with rock art associated with prehistoric local culture. You can only get here by boat, and it’s a placid journey up the Zuo, with buffalo wallowing in the shallows, people fishing from bamboo rafts and tending family plots, and the banks thick with spindly-branched, red-flowering kapok trees. The boat docks by the paintings, where steps lead to viewing platforms to see them close up. Nobody has worked out a definitive interpretation of the 1900 figures, but they include drummers and dancers, dogs and cattle, a dragon-boat race, men with arms bent upwards, a “king” with a sword, and just two women, long-haired and pregnant. Interesting as the paintings are, as with many of the best travels, the journey there is more rewarding than the destination.

Way down in southern Guangxi, fairly close to China’s open border with Vietnam, NANNING was just a medium-sized market town when European traders opened a river route from neighbouring Guangdong in the early twentieth century, starting a period of rapid growth that saw the city supplanting Guilin as the provincial capital. The city has capitalized on recent trade agreements with Vietnam, and today Nanning is a bright, easy-going place with a mild boom-town atmosphere and a mix of leafy boulevards, modern architecture and a handful of narrow, colonial-era streets. There’s good shopping, decent food, a museum strong on regional archeology, and both international and domestic transport connections.

Though there is no direct vehicle road, it’s possible to hike between Ping An and Dazhai in around four hours, via the attractive village of Zhongliu (中六, zhōngliù), where there is very basic food but no accommodation. Yao women along the way will offer their services as guides (around ¥50), though with basic maps from accommodation, they’re not really necessary.

Nestled 70km south of Guilin in the thick of China’s most spectacular karst scenery, YANGSHUO rose to prominence during the mid-1980s, when tourists on Li River cruises realized that the village made a great place to settle down and get on intimate terms with the river and its peaks. Yangshuo has grown considerably since then and, despite retaining an outdated reputation as a mellow haven among Western travellers, has become a rowdy draw for domestic tourists, with the majority of its bars, restaurants and shops catering to their tastes. It remains, however, an easy place to spend a few days: hills surround everything, village lanes swarm with activity, and there are restaurants and accommodation everywhere. You can rent a bike and spend a day zipping between hamlets, hike around or go rock climbing on nearby peaks, or study cooking or martial arts. Just note that during Yangshuo’s peak-season tourism (July–October) accommodation is scarce and many attractions will be overcrowded.

Accommodation in Yangshuo

Yangshuo’s accommodation ranges from basic dorm beds to comfy doubles: balconies, folksy furnishings and wooden floors are nice touches, though locations within a couple of hundred metres of West Street’s nightclubs may not be. During peak season (including the first two weeks of October), and even weekends, prices rise astronomically and it’s hard to find anywhere in the centre for under ¥300. Conversely, stiff competition means rates can halve during the winter, when you’ll want to check the availability of heating and hot water, while in summer air conditioning is a must.

Getting to Yangshou

Agents at accommodation and all around town can book long-distance bus tickets along with flights, taxis to Guilin airport (¥240, or a shared vehicle at ¥80/person) and train tickets from Guilin.

Several mid-price Chinese restaurants at the southern end of Xie Lu, as well as on the north end of Guihua Lu (the best are up the alley, after it crosses Diecui Lu) serve the spicy local speciality beer fish (啤酒鱼, píjiǔ yú), which costs ¥35–80 per 500g – the most expensive and having the least bones being the maogu fish (毛骨鱼, máogǔ yú).

Cormorant fishing

When you’ve had enough scenery for one day, do something unusual and spend an evening watching cormorant fishing (book through your hotel; ¥50–70 per person for 90min). This involves heading out on a bamboo raft or small boat at dusk, in a small flotilla of other tourist craft, closely following a tiny wooden fishing boat from which a group of cormorants fish for their owner. Despite being turned into a tourist activity at Yangshuo, people still make their living from this age-old practice across the region, raising young birds to dive into the water and swim back to the boat with full beaks. The birds are prevented from swallowing by ties around their necks, but it’s usual practice for the fisherman to slacken these off and let them eat every seventh fish – apparently, the cormorants refuse to work otherwise.

Yangshuo drinking and nightlife

For drinking, almost all the backpacker-style restaurants along Guihua Lu have bars and there are also a load of fairly similar loud bars along Xian Qian Lu, though the best places to hang out are the places listed here, or the rooftop bars at the hostels near the river, such as the Showbiz Inn or the nearby and more raucous Monkey Janes . West Street is strung with almost identical clubs, all of which play similar generic pounding techno for the mainly Chinese crowds. It’s hard to recommend one over the others, and they generally stay open till around 2am during high season.

Eating in Yangshuo

Yangshuo’s numerous restaurants and cafés are split between those by the canals between Xi Jie and Guihua Lu, which mainly cater to Chinese tourists seeking exotic foreign food (Indian, German, Spanish, and even British pub grub), and those along Chengzhong Lu and Guihua Lu, which serve backpacker staples and Chinese and Western fare to a foreign crowd. Everywhere opens early for Western breakfasts, and keeps going well into the night. For inexpensive Chinese canteens and food stalls, try the area around the bus station.

Petty crime

Be warned that petty crime is on the rise in Yangshou. Be wary of your possessions while swimming, and of your wallet and bags when getting on or off buses. Increasingly, bags are snatched from tourists’ bicycles by motorcycling thieves, so don’t keep your stuff loose in the basket.

Tours and activities at Yangshuo

Thanks to its spectacular natural location, Yangshuo has well-established guides for any number of organized activities. Freelance guides work Yangshuo’s streets and cafés; all claim to have unique, untouristed places to take you for lunch with a farming family and offer insights into village life. Some have been doing this for years, including the English-speaking, cheery and helpful “Wendy” Li Yunzhao (1319 7638186, [email protected]). Expect to pay about ¥50–75 per person per day depending on the size of the group.

For cookery classes, contact English-speaking Linda at Cloud 9 restaurant (t 135 07838851; a 3hr class costs ¥120). For the more serious, the Yangshuo Cooking School (137 88437286, yangshuocookingschool.com) runs one- to four-day courses, including a vegetarian one.

Bicycle rental and tours

Accommodation or operators at the western end of Yangshuo’s West Street rent bicycles for ¥20–30 a day, depending on whether you want an ordinary rattletrap or an off-roader with decent springs: ¥300 or your ID may be asked for as a deposit. The excellent Bike Asia (bikeasia.com)is based in town too, at 8 Guihua Lu – they rent out the best bikes for ¥70 a day including maps, helmets and repair kits, with high-end mountain bikes costing more at ¥150. They also run guided bike-tours in English around Yangshuo of around 30–40km which cost ¥150 and leave daily at 9am.

Along the Li River

Accommodation can arrange bamboo raft trips between Xingping and Yangdi (2hr; ¥200) and full-day kayak trips (¥200); or in hot weather you can simply buy a rubber tube from shops along Diecui Jie and head down to the water for a splash – but leave it until the last ferries have departed upstream around 4pm. The now badly named Secret Beach, a couple of kilometres upstream, down a small track, is the nicest place for a swim. For those brave (or foolish) enough, another great experience is to jump off the 9m-high Yulong Bridge (玉龙桥, yùlóng qiáo), which is 15km northwest of the town, and a 2km stroll from Baisha Town (白沙镇, báishā zhèn).

Martial arts

Yangshuo has become a martial arts hangout, with the long-established Budi Zhen school founded by the incredible, ancient Mr Gao and now run by his twin sons. Visit their training hall (步地真功夫馆, bùdì zhēngōngfu guǎn) off West Street (1397 7350377, [email protected]), to study a whole range of martial disciplines at around ¥80 a lesson. For tai ji try the Yangshuo Traditional Taichi School (阳朔传统太极学校, yángshuò chuántǒng tàijí xuéxiào), housed in a Qing-dynasty farmhouse at Jima village close to the Yulong River (152 9592 0102, traditionaltaichischool.com). They teach courses up to instructor-level and also offer accommodation and food, with lessons costing ¥70 per hour and up, though for long-term students discounts are available.

Rock climbing

Yangshuo is a popular rock-climbing centre with over four hundred mostly short but very tough graded climbs on local peaks ranging from 5.6 to 5.13. New climbs are being pioneered all the time and the Yangshuo Climbing Guide available from climb-shops will show you most of them, along with detailed climbing info too. For experienced climbers, equipment-rental is around ¥180 a day for two, with one-day beginners’ courses starting at ¥450 a day per person. Insight Adventures, at 53 Xianqian Jie (0773 8811033,insight-adventures.com) are the most established operator, and although slightly pricier than most, have foreign guides and a good safety record. The Karst Cafe on Xianqian Jie is the spot to go to socialize with other climbers and get the latest info.

ZHAOXING, around four hours by bus from Sanjiang, is an extremely attractive single-street Dong town set in a small valley, with a generous smattering of old wooden buildings including five square-based drum towers, each differently styled and built by separate clans. Accompanying wind-and-rain bridges and theatre stages are decorated with fragments of mirrors and mouldings of actors and animals. Houses are hung with strings of drying radishes for sour hotpots, and the back lanes resound to the noise of freshly dyed cloth being pounded with wooden mallets to give it a shiny patina.

Recommended China Travel Agencies & Best China Tours 2024

January 28, 2024 By Josh Summers

What are the best China tour operators? I get emails from people all the time asking for my recommendations and I’ve finally decided to compile my answer into a regularly-updated article. When it comes to travel, I prefer to support local China travel agencies instead of massive travel companies, and you’ll see this reflected in this list. Enjoy!

Best China Tour Companies and best China travel agencies 2022

When it comes to tour operators, I have a personal motto that I follow when traveling:

Travel globally; tour locally.

What this means is that while I love to visit new places all over the globe, I prefer to give my business to local tour operators instead of massive, state-owned China travel agencies. There are a couple reasons for this.

First, if I’m going to pay for a tour, I want my money to have the greatest impact on the local economy. This isn’t always the case whenever the branch offices of a large travel agency send half their earnings back to the headquarters in another part of the country.

Second, and more importantly, I believe that a local tour operator (both Chinese and foreign) is usually going to provide you with a more authentic experience. They know where the best restaurants are. They can often set up a home visit or a food tour. They do more than just bus you to the next tourist destination.

What I’d like to do here is provide you with a list of recommended China travel agencies that can serve you whether you’re doing a cross-country, multi-city tour or you just want to find a day-trip in whatever city you’ll be visiting.

Table of Contents

Region- & City-Specific Tour Operators

  • Best Beijing Tour Operators
  • Best Shanghai Tour Operators
  • Best Xi’an Tour Operators
  • Best Chengdu Tour Operators
  • Best South China Travel Agencies
  • Best West China Travel Agencies

China-Wide Tour Operators

  • Best Full-Service China Travel Agencies
  • Best China Food Tours

Scroll down to read more or use these links above to jump to city-specific travel agencies that I think are worth using.

Note: Some of the links in this article may be affiliate links, which means that I may be compensated if you choose to use any of these China travel agencies.

Best China Travel Agencies (Full-Service)

The following travel agencies in China are full-service companies that offer a range of tour packages that cover all different parts of the country. In most cases, these companies arrange everything for you: transportation, tour guide, restaurants, entrance fees, etc.

Wendy Wu Tours (Non-US Travelers)

Wendy Wu Tours, a full-service China travel agency

Everybody I know who has joined a Wendy Wu Tour has thoroughly enjoyed their trip.

Their full-service China tours are broken up into various categories including destination (i.e. Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu) and tour style (i.e. group, active, tailormade, river cruises, etc.).

Just looking at their available tour packages is a great place to get inspiration for your own itinerary. The only thing worth mentioning here is that strangely they only serve travelers from the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand.

Use the link above to explore exclusive discounts available to TravelChinaCheaper readers.

Windhorse Tours (All Travelers)

Windhorse Tour - one of the best China tour operators

What I’ve loved about Windhorse Tours is how easy they make it to choose exactly how you would like to experience China.

Is there a specific part of China you’d like to see? A specific theme? (culture, festival, photography?) A certain number of days?

Windhorse has been around for more than a decade and their main office location in Chengdu allows them to provide even better tours for those in central, western or southern China.

China Highlights Tours (All Travelers)

China Highlights, a full-service China travel agency

For those of you travelers from the USA, Canada, and the rest of Europe, China Highlights offers a number of great China tour packages that you’ll find interesting.

Some people use ChinaHighlights for the sole purpose of pre-purchasing China train tickets online , but they offer some amazing tour packages, including one that gives you a close encounter with a panda!

Whether you decide to use one of their tours, book a flight or book a train through them, it’s worth seeing what China Highlights has to offer on their website.

Best Region-Specific China Tour Operators

This next group of China tour operators is either region- or city-specific, meaning that they offer tour exclusively for one region or city.

Personally, these are my favorite kind of companies because they’re small, personal and they have a deep knowledge of their specific area.

Recommended Beijing Tour Operators

For those spending any significant amount of time in China’s capital, not only are there some great places to visit in Beijing , there are also some unique ways to visit them.

Check out three of my favorite Beijing tour operators.

Beijing by Foot – Highly Recommended History Tours

Beijing by Foot, a recommended China travel company

You can walk through the Forbidden City…or you can have an historian and excellent storyteller like Jeremiah Jenne help you visualize the history of the place.

Jeremiah and his team present Chinese history in such an entertaining way. They offer scheduled tours at all the major Beijing destinations as well as private and custom tours.

Beijing Hikers

Beijing hikers travel company in China

Is exploring the rough terrain of ancient Great Wall ruins while hiking and sweating your idea of a fun time? If so, you’re really going to love Beijing Hikers.

They offer affordable hikes almost every day of the week that take you to parts of the Great Wall and other beautiful areas around Beijing. Make sure you’re in good enough shape!

Beijing Sideways

Beijing Sidways travel company logo

Anybody can walk or hike around Beijing, but very few people get the privilege of taking an old motorcycle sidecar through the streets and alleyways of old Beijing.

While I’ve never done this myself, I’ve heard from quite a few people that it’s an enjoyable way to explore Beijing with a friend (the bikes hold 1 driver and 2 passengers).

Recommended Shanghai Tour Operators

Shanghai is another massive Chinese city that offers more to see than you could dare to experience in a year, so make sure you set your expectations appropriately.

You’re only going to have time to hit the highlights, so it’s only a matter of how you want to do it.

Jenny’s Shanghai Tours

Jenny's Shanghai Tours offers excellent walking tours throughout the city.

Jenny’s Shanghai tours is a perfect option for those travelers who would prefer to take their time walking through the old streets of Shanghai and hearing the history and culture behind each place from a local.

Tours include an English-speaking guide who can give you the history and flavor behind each location, in addition to helping you find the best local places to eat around Shanghai.

China Cycling Tours

China Cycling Tours of Shanghai

China Cycling Tours offers some great bike tours in and around Shanghai. This includes tours around the city, mountain biking outside the city and even day trips that will take you from Shanghai to Suzhou to cycle.

Shanghai Insiders

Shanghai Insiders, a local China tour operator in the city that works with motorcycle and jeep tours

Shanghai Insiders is a unique China tour operator that delivers bespoke sidecar (motorcycle) and jeep tours of Shanghai. This is a great option for group travel to explore unique parts of Shanghai you can’t see on a bike.

Recommended Xian Tour Operators

As one of the oldest cities in China (and one of it’s former capitals), Xi’an is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations outside of Beijing and Shanghai. Once you’ve had a chance to walk the city wall or visit the Terracotta Warriors, you’ll quickly understand why.

Here are three recommended local China travel agencies that can give you an intimate look at this historic area.

Urban Adventures Xian

Intrepid Urban Adventures Xian

Urban Adventures Xian offers a number of great options to explore in and around the city (and there’s plenty to see!).

They try to offer a more personal and intimate kind of tour that includes bike tours around the Terracotta Warriors or Lishan, walking history tours within the city and even a Chinese cooking class if that’s something that interests you.

Xian Private Tour

Xian Private Tours, a China travel agency in Xi'an.

As the name suggests, Xian Private Tours offers customized private tours in addition to popular one-day and multi-day trips around Xi’an. Additionally, you can use them to rent a car and drive for the area, which is nice.

China Xi’an Tour

China Xian Tour logo

With more than 15 years of experience in Xi’an, this local agency offers more than the typical Xi’an tour. They have food tours, Muslim quarter tours, “local experience” tours, night tours and they also help arrange car rentals.

Hong Kong Hotel 50% OFF!

Recommended Chengdu Tour Operators

Chengdu is a place that is best known as the home to China’s lovable pandas, and while that’s definitely something you need to experience, there is also a lot more to do around Sichuan. Here are a few of my recommended tours to consider in Chengdu.

And make sure you scroll down to my recommended food tours in China to see some excellent Chengdu options (since Sichuan food is so popular around the world).

Panda Volunteer Tour

Volunteer at a Panda Reserve in Chengdu, Sichuan!

Getting to feed and hug a panda is probably one of the most unique China experiences you can have, and Chengdu is the place to do it. There are many Chengdu Panda Bases where you can pay to “volunteer” (it costs ~US$100) and then take a picture with a panda (additional US$150 donation). The volunteer experience is worth the money.

Local Chengdu Tours

Local Chengdu Tours, a tour operator in Sichuan

Local Chengdu Tours definitely offers day trips to a panda base and even a volunteer program, but they also offer history and culture tours, food tours hiking tours (that they call “Side Trips”) and multi-day city tours that will show you every aspect of the Sichuan culture and history of Chengdu. This city is certainly worth a few days on your itinerary!

Best Southern China Travel Agencies (Yunnan, Guangxi)

The beautiful scenery of Yunnan and Guangxi is unmatched in all of China. More than likely, you’ve seen pictures of these two provinces without realizing it – they are that iconic.

The best part about these locations is that in addition to stunning scenery, they also boast a variety of ethnic groups worth visiting.

Here are a few of the best China tour operators who can show you around southern China.

Explore Beyond (China) – Recommended

Explore Beyond logo

Explore Beyond is a bespoke tour company that operates tours in Wuyuan, Guilin, Guizhou and Yunnan.

Unlike other travel agencies, they offer private, all-inclusive tours hosted by what they call a “personal Explorer” who drives, guides, hosts and facilitates your experience.

Your guide will be a resident foreigner and Chinese who have both lived or worked abroad long-term. This is an excellent way to really experience southern China!

Bike Yunnan Tours

Bike Yunnan, an adventure travel company in southern China.

If you’re up for it, I highly recommend you try to bike around Yunnan. It’s a province whose beauty lends itself to amazing bike tours. Join one of their groups for a guided tour or rent a bike to use on your own.

Guilin Li River Tours

Guilin Li River Tours, a recommended China tour operator in Guangxi, China.

How about this: instead of the typical tourist photo of the amazing Guilin River, you jump in a helicopter or a river boat to get a more unique view. Pretty cool, huh!? That’s what Guilin Li River Tours offers.

Best Western China Travel Agencies (Tibet, Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai)

It would be a crime to forget about the wilds of western China. Each of the four provinces (Xinjiang, Tibet, Gansu & Qinghai) are unique in their own right and offer memorable experience for those who are willing to take the time.

And that’s the thing: getting out to west China is time-intensive. The area is so large that you’ll be spending quite a bit of time on transportation. It’s worth it, though!

Old Road Tours, a Xinjiang travel agency

For travel to Xinjiang , you’ll want to use a Uyghur-run travel agency. The Uyghur are the majority people group here and the family that runs Old Road Tours are some of the best in the business.

Go To Tibet Logo

GoToTibet provides various private tours and small group tours at affordable prices. They offer not only regular tour itineraries, but also trekking, cycling & motorbike tours in Tibet.

Gansu / Qinghai

Elevated Trips - a tour operator in Gansu and Qinghai

Gansu and Qinghai may not be on the top of your “must-see” list…but it should be. Aside from gorgeous scenery, these places allow you to experience Tibetan culture without going to Tibet.

Best China Food Tours – Tasty Travel!

Finally, I’d like to touch on another growing segment of travel in the country – China food tours .

As recently as just five years ago, very few food tours existed. Now, they’re everywhere. Here are the three companies I recommend you connect with if you find joy in trying local food you had no idea you would love.

Lost Plate China Food Tours

Lost Plate, food tours in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong

Lost Plate is a larger company that operates not only in China, but also Cambodia and even the United States.

They offer food tours around Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xi’an, so you’ll want to check out what they have to offer if you’ll be visiting any of these cities.

And trust me – a food tour is one of those experiences you won’t regret trying!

Chengdu Food Tours

Chengdu Food Tours, an excellent way to taste the food of Sichuan

Sichuan food is famous all across China and the world, and nobody knows it better than Chengdu Food Tours. They’ll bring you to the restaurants where the locals eat and allow you to try a number of different dishes. Great day tour!

UnTour Food Tours

UnTour Food Tours of Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Xian

Similar to Lost Plate, UnTour operates in multiple cities across China, including Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong. The promise to give you the experience of “eating like a local” and there’s no doubt you’ll love it!

Final Thoughts | Recommended China Travel Agencies

As you can tell, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to using a China travel agency. There are plenty more options to choose from, obviously, but these are the tour operators I recommend personally.

Even if you’re a solo traveler, it’s worth taking a look at many of the day trips that are available. There are some things you just can’t see (or don’t know to see) on your own, which is one of the advantages of tour groups vs solo travel in China.

If you’ve had experience with other China tour operators and you think it was amazing, connect with me and let me know!

Top 20 Attractions in Guangxi Province

Waterfalls

Guangxi , the province right above Vietnam, is known for mountainous terrain, stunning rice terraces, and a history that goes back thousands of years and numerous dynasties. Here’s our list of the top 20 cultural, natural, and scenic attractions in Guangxi.

Longsheng rice terraces.

The rice terraces in Longsheng should be on any traveler’s China bucket list. Cut into the side of mountains, the emerald-green rice paddies rise above low clouds like giant stairs, making for insanely Instagramable photos no matter the time of year. However, they are most resplendent in spring when they’re flooded and are said to look like the scales on the back of a dragon.

Gongbao Mansion

Considered some of the best-preserved ancient architecture buildings, the mansion buildings were built by a governor-general during the Qing Dynasty. The complex includes the Gonbao Mansion, Nanyin academy of classical learning, Cen Family Ancestral Hall, and Zengshou Pavilion.

Laorenshan (Old Man Mountain)

A quick and popular hike, Old Man Mountain pokes skyward in the middle of town. The trail is mostly smooth stone steps that snake gradually around the hill. Once on top, visitors have a 360 degree view of the city.

View from the top of Old Man Mountain

Huangyao Ancient Town

Over 1,000-years-old, this ancient city in northeast Shaoping County is home to a myriad of well-preserved pavilions, temples, folk homes, and massive ancient trees. Because the town is wreathed in mountains, transportation to it isn’t particularly convenient. But, that’s helped the town preserve much of its ancient relics and traditions.

Elephant Trunk Hill

One of the most obvious symbols of Guilin, this rock formation is known for resembling an elephant drinking water with its trunk. A cave called Moon-over-Water is tucked between its nose and leg and atop it all stands the Puxian Pagoda.

Elephant Trunk Hill

Reed Flute Cave

Named for the reeds growing outside the opening, this limestone cave system in Guilin is a must for all science and history lovers. The stalagmites, stalactites, and other rock formations are illuminated with multicolored neon lights and ancient writing from the Tang Dynasty is scrawled upon the walls.

Reed Flute Cave

Sun and Moon Pagodas

These twin pagodas stand alone in Fir Lake in downtown Guilin and combine culture, art, architecture and religion into one attraction. The Sun Pagoda, the world’s tallest bronze pagoda, is two stories taller than the Moon Pagoda, though both are connected by an underwater tunnel. The pagodas are most frequented at night, when they shine gold and silver light on the black water below.

Sun and Moon

Jingjiang Princes’ City

Located in inner Guilin and built between 1372 and 1392, this complex was originally the official residence of Zhu Shouqian, the great-nephew of the first Ming dynasty emperor. Between then and the end of the Ming dynasty, 14 kings lived there. Now, the complex functions as part of Guangxi Normal University and as a tourist attraction. Be sure to check out Solitary Beauty Peak and the Zhuangyuan Jidi Arch.

Entrance

Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge

Located in Sanjiang County, this stone bridge is sandwiched between five stone piers and five four-story wooden pavilions. Essentially it’s a elaborately decorated bridge, pavilion, corridor hybrid set in immeasurably beautiful landscape. Be sure to pop over to the Dong villages nearby after you’ve walked through.

Wind and Rain Bridge

Just a few kilometers outside Yangshuo, this hill features a wide, semi-circular hole that naturally tunnels through the middle. It’s about a 20-minute climb to reach the arch on an easy concrete path. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a rougher, more arduous trail to the summit.

Moon Hill

Guangxi Museum of Nationalities

If you’ve come during the rainy season, a trip to the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities might be a nice respite from the mercurial weather. The highlights of the museum include reconstructed models of traditional homes used by various minority villages and a bronze drum exhibition.

West Street, Yangshuo

Though the street is more than 1,400-years-old, locals often refer to it as “foreigner street” thanks to the number of tourist shops located there. Goods run a little more expensive here, but all the shopkeepers speak fairly good English, making it easy to pick up souvenirs like chopsticks, scrolls, calligraphy, paintings, snacks, and tea. There are also a number of bars and restaurants with Western food options scattered down the road.

West Street

People’s Park

A little green oasis in the otherwise industrial Nanning, People’s Park holds a 17-acre lake, a botanical garden with a 1,000-year-old banyan tree, and Wangxian Hill, the highest point in downtown Nanning. The green space is sometimes referred to as White Dragon Park thanks to a legend about a general mistaking a flock of white sheep by the lake for a dragon.

Detian Waterfall

The largest waterfall in Asia actually sits on two countries – China and Vietnam. Over 200-meters high and 70-meters tall (on the China side), water rushes down a three-tiered cliff to a thunderous crescendo on the rocks below, making for an awe-inspiring day trip.

Waterfalls

Sanjiang Drum Tower

Though this traditional Dong-style drum tower is pretty much the only tourist attraction in Sanjiang, it’s worth a stop along the way. Built without any iron nails, the tower is an interesting bit of architecture that dwarfs and diminishes all the surrounding structures.

Karst Mountains of Yangshuo

Looking every bit like screensavers, the karst mountains of Yangshuo seemingly pop out of the earth like mighty stone pillars. They’re popular for die-hard rock climbers, too – the city boasts over 300 climbing routes ranging in difficulty from 5.6 to 5.13.

Karst Mountains

Zhengyang Pedestrian Street

This walking street in downtown Guilin is the shopping center of town and is actually considered the first commercial shopping district in western China. Nearly 700-meters long, the street is home to a number of bars, restaurants, theaters, scenic spots, and galleries.

Pedestrian Street

Leye-Fengshan World Geopark

The unspoilt park makes for a relaxing day when you need to get away from the crowds. Full of karsts, underground rivers, natural bridges, and an extensive cave system, it’s easy to while away a day or two here.

Weizhou Island

Just off the coast of Guangxi, near Beihai, this island is the largest and youngest volcanic island in China. Rent a motor tricycle and pop over to Crocodile Hill, Saint Maria Church, the banana plantations, or find an idyllic stretch of beach and just unwind.
