The royal city of Hyderabad in 3 days

Photo of Sneha Vashist

There are times when I wonder...Why does my mind always wander to travel?

Travel to new unexplored places...

Travel to do crazy shopping trips..

Travel to make the unknown known..

Travel to meet someone I haven't seen for long...

Travel to simply enjoy refreshing train journeys..

Travel not in search of peace but to be surrounded by noise...

Travel for those interesting unplanned conversations with the unacquainted...

Travel to feel alive..

To pump up my jubilant vibe and to enjoy my happy side

Words fall less to describe this kind of love. The eternal one !

The charming city of pearls, Hyderabad , has something about it, something very royal. This city of Nizams and the hub of information technology is one of those places which is crowned with glory for its rich history and splendid culture. And I indeed felt extremely royal with the warm welcome this city offered.

Telugu, the ABCD of this language is unknown to me. What came as a pleasant surprise and gave me laughter attacks as soon as I stepped out of the station and grabbed a rickshaw to head to my friend's house was the gibberish words pumping out loud in the auto. It is very difficult to explain how it feels when everything you read around cannot be read. Unknown language, bizarre words. It's kind of funny to feel alien in your own country just with the change in the geographical zones.

Paradise Biryani Takeaway

After the historical tour for the day, it was time to add some fuel to our engines. Following the biryani food mantra, I decided to try on Biryani at the very famous Paradise Biryani centre. Why this place ? Because it was suggested by all, like a must visit shrine for foodoholics. My reviews on veg Biryani, it was kind of good but not orgasmic. But again I would suggest, your taste buds and mine are different.

Shah Ghouse Cafe & Restaurant

It was then time to say adios to this uniquely elegant 200 year old palace and head to some Biryani place nearby. When in Hyderabad, all you eat is Biryani ! Atleast, I wanted to follow that mantra. When asked around, locals suggested that we should try Shah Ghouse restaurant in the area for varieties of Biryani. Being a vegetarian, all biryanis taste similar to me. So, this was also one of the not so extraordinary veg biryanis for me but it definitely filled up my empty stomach. Do not hold on any high expectations in terms of ambiance and hospitality. Go for the food. Non vegetarians might get good options. But I would still suggest. Try it out and make your own opinion.

Photo of Charminar, Char Kaman, Ghansi Bazaar, Hyderabad, Telangana, India by Sneha Vashist

Moazzam Jahi Market

After crazy shopping, it was time to head to Mozzam Jahi Market to relish handmade fruit ice creams at one of the oldest ice cream parlours in Hyderabad, the Famous Ice Cream. Around 60 years old, nothing fancy, table chairs laid out in open, one can relax in between the hustle bustle of the city and taste from varieties of available flavours like musk melon, chikoo, papaya, custard apple etc. Close by to this ice cream place is the very renowned Karachi bakery. I love bakery biscuits and this place is a must visit and a must buy kind. More than half the weight of by baggage was credited to Karachi bakery items.

Hatiyan Jhad Baobab Tree

The next on my list was a tree, Hathiyan Ka Jhad. Does that sound funny ? So, actually while I was doing my research bit before making a trip to Hyderabad, I stumbled upon some random article online which mentioned about this 400 year old tree. I found it extremely fascinating and due to the proximity of this place to Golconda fort, I managed to plan out the visit perfectly in my head and even in reality.

I was a little skeptical initially if anyone would even know about this place but surprisingly an auto driver took me and my friend to this historical tree and even narrated us the known rumors about it. The point I am trying to make here is, it was more famous than I thought it would be. Hathiyan ka Jhad has got its name because of its humongous sized trunk which resembles like the feet of an elephant. It is located in the sprawling lawns of the Naya Quila premises of Golconda fort which is now a golf course.

One of the famous stories that the local residents believe is that this Baobab tree was once a shelter to the famous thief of the our childhood stories, Ali baba and the 40 thieves. Who knows if there is any reality to it but it can be true because the massive trunks encircle to form a hollow cave in between which can be used as a perfect hiding place as experienced by us and its perfectly dark inside.

COCO'S Bar and Grill

A late night dinner with best friends at the open terrace of Coco's bar and grill with beer bottles in hand and music in the air felt like the best time ever. All is well that ends well. It was a perfect ending to a delightful eventful day.

Chowmahalla Palace – Shahghouse Biryani Centre – Char Minar – Laad Bazar 'Famous' Ice-cream Centre – Karachi Bakery

So, the first day in Hyderabad was a bag full of surprises with all the royal fantasies coming true.

I began my day by visiting Chowmahalla Palace. This palace makes you feel like a queen or maybe it did that to me. The palace has majestic courtyards, lush green gardens, mesmerizing fountains and prestigious collection of vintage cars. This highly maintained palace of Nizams defines what luxurious living would have been! I entered the Khilwat Durbar, the chandelier court of the Nizams and it made my heart skip a beat. Everything around me happened in slow motion for next few minutes. Felt like I was time travelling to a different era. It's difficult to take your eyes off the beauty of this durbar. These chandeliers are only lighted when parties are held there. Believe it or not. This durbar can be hired for parties. Are you planning one lately ? Why not add royalty to it by hiring this place ? Ooops, I meant palace.

Photo of The royal city of Hyderabad in 3 days by Sneha Vashist

My personal favourite in this palace was the vintage car section. Royalty gets defined not only when it runs in your blood or through your clothes and jewellery. It is also defined when you travel grand. On royal wheels. I wanted to believe somehow that this palace belonged to me. Everything here was connected to me. May be in my past life. Let me quote myself, "This palace gives you dreams.

It was then time to explore the very famous minaret that symbolizes Hyderabad, the Char Minar and the buzzing market places around it. Situated in the heart of the old city, this monument is defines Hyderabad. Your trip to Hyderabad is incomplete if you do not take out time to visit this magnificent minaret. You say the word shopping and I am all lit up. I suppose all girls hold similar traits.

Laad Bazaar near Char Minar serves as a blingy paradise for shopaholics. It is a bustling market housing more than 100 shops that sell stone studded lac bangles. Mainly famous for bangles, this place is full of glitter. From varieties of bangles in thousands of designs, one can go mad about what to pick and what to leave. And not just bangles, laces, imitation pearl jewellery and what not.

I shopped like crazy and it was so many bags full of Hyderabadi shopping that compelled me to carry a statement Hyderabadi look for my best friend's wedding in Bhopal . Remember to bargain as much as possible. Bangles, maang tikas and chokers are definitely a must buy. Sorry for the cheesy lines but have to say, "Hyderabad me ho to motiyon mein khelna to banta hai boss."

Golconda Fort – Hathiyan Ka Jhad – Qutub Shahi Tombs – Paradise centre for Biryani – Shilpa Gramam

I started my 2nd day in Hyderabad by visiting Golconda fort. If you are a history buff or a photo fanatic or a selfie king/queen. This place is a must visit. This fort takes takes you back in time when the battles were fought and when the kings ruled. Beautiful architecture keeps you stunned. If someone plans to visit in the evening, light and sound show should not be missed. It is supposed to mesmerizing.

Qutub Shahi tombs was the next destination on the list. Closely situated to Golconda fort, it would not cost you more than 50 Rs from the fort in a rickshaw. Nowhere one would find so many tombs together at one place. These grandiose monuments have been erected in the memory of departed royal rulers of Golconda fort. The archways of the tombs are exquisite and compel you to get few stunning profile pictures for social networking sites. Magnificently splendid architecture of these tombs made me think, royals are even buried with royal elegance.

By evening, I just wanted to relax and do anything else other than dwelling into any kind or form of history. The plan was to make a visit to Shilparamam, a craft village with art forms and handicrafts. To put it in simple words, a bigger version of Delhi hatt with additional places to visit inside the village like rural museum, sculpture park and art gallery.

Relaxes your mind and some shopping boosts up your spirit. Make a visit if you have time in hand and you are staying at this side of the city.

The last day in Hyderabad was dedicated to one of the best known art museums of the world, the Salarjung Museum.

Having heard a lot about it from friends, parents and everyone around, it was a different kind of excitement to visit this place. We were warned that this museum is too big to be covered in a day and we will get tired and we might have to go for a foot massage later on. But who cared. Turning a deaf ear to everyone, I was all set to hang out to Salarjung museum for the day.

Doesn't matter if you are an art patron or not, this place stuns you with all that it has. The art objects collected by the art connoisseur, Salar Jung III are placed in this museum after this museum came into existence and was opened to public in 1951 by Jawahar Lal Nehru. One can spend hours in admiring various forms of art at this place. Though my personal favorites were Veiled Rebecca, Musical Clock and the double statue. The veiled Rebecca is said to be a melody in white marble and is considered as the most stunning art object in the world. It is surely a gem of Salar Jung Museum.

The double statue of Mephistopheles and Margaretta is another delight for visitors. Carved out of a single block of wood, this statue showcases opposite characters from a very famous German drama. It gets difficult to get your eyes off this beauty.

The clock room at the museum houses more than 300 clocks but the one that stands out and takes away all the attention is the Musical clock. This clock is a mechanical wonder, a toy figure of a watchman who pushes open the door, emerges hour after hour in a great hurry to beat the melodious gong that indicates time. It is placed in a corridor with chairs laid out for visitors so that you can sit back and enjoy the musical sound of gong.

Being a single man's collection, this museum feels like a wonder. It ended being a fantastic afternoon at the museum and I highly recommend it.

With the end of the day's trip, it was also time to say goodbyes to the queenly grandiose city of Hyderabad. I was ecstatic to take back with me an enamored experience.

All thanks to my lovely friends for being such great hosts ..guides and what not..!! Without them, this trip wouldn't have been accomplished in first place and even if it did, it wouldn't have been the same.

Along with its culture, Hyderabad has also embraced the modern developments in the field of Information Technology. This cosmopolitan city beautifully blends the grand heritage of the past along with modern technology; thus, carving a special place in the hearts of its residents and tourists.

Alluring Heritage

The iconic facades of Hyderabad from the by-gone era weave their story through architectural design that is deeply influenced by the rulers during the period and the purpose of its existence. These ancient monuments are a great architectural marvel that have amazed the visitors for centuries.

If you are planning to visit Hyderabad for a day or two, here are some of the iconic heritage structures that you must visit during your stay in Hyderabad:

1. Charminar

Charminar Hyderabad

Charminar is an Urdu word that translates into four minarets (‘Char’ means four and ‘minar’ means minarets). This iconic structure built in the Indo-Saracenic style serves both as a monument as well as a mosque since the past 400 years. Charminar was constructed in 1591 AD by Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth ruler of Hyderabad.

Charminar is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture in India. It was built by Quli Qutub Shah after shifting the capital from Golconda to Hyderabad and it had served as a central point for the construction of the city of Hyderabad around it. It is also known as Arc de Triomphe of the East due to its resemblance to the architectural structure.

The square structure of Charminar consists of four arches, one on each side and four minarets, one each corner of the structure. Granite, limestone, mortar and pulverized marble were used in the construction of Charminar. Each of the 48.7 meter high minarets points towards the four cardinal directions. The intricate motifs, balconies and lotus-leaf base motifs are some of the architectural features of the Qutub Shahi dynasty visible on most of their structures. The four clocks were added on each side of the building in 1889.

According to legend, Charminar was built by Quli Qutub Shah to commemorate the eradication of a deadly plague, cholera. It was after the completion of Charminar, that the city of Hyderabad came into existence.

2. Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort Hyderabad

The majestic fort of Golconda is spread over an enormous area of 11 kilometres. The vast expanse of Golconda Fort has marvelled its visitors with its grand architecture. Golconda Fort has evolved to this present structure of a grand fortress after several ruling dynasties of Hyderabad made their contributions towards it. Golconda Fort has mosques, temples, bastions, lawns and royal apartments within its premises. The Light and Sound Show narrates the grand history of this unique fort. I would suggest that every traveller should at least experience the magic of storytelling at the Light and Sound Show to enhance their knowledge about Golconda.

The word ‘Golconda’ is derived from two Telugu words ‘Golla’ and ‘Konda’, which translate to ‘Shepherd’s Hills’. The foundation of the Golconda Fort was laid by the Kakatiya dynasty in the 12th century. Quli Qutub Shah had made another significant contribution to the existing structure of the Golconda Fort by adding eight gates and 87 bastions.

Another attractive architectural feature of Golconda Fort is the Bala Hisar which is the highest point within the premises of the fort. It is said that if anyone claps at the entrance of the fort, the echo of the clap can be heard at Bala Hisar. This acoustical modification at the entrance of the Golconda Fort was used to alarm the royal family, who are almost a kilometre away from the entrance, of any potential intruders.

It is believed that Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah had authorised the use of bricks for construction of the mosque to be prepared from the soil of the Holy Land of Mecca. These bricks were used in the construction of the central arch of the mosque. Therefore, it is called the Mecca Masjid.

The roof of the Mecca Masjid is rested on 15 arches, five on the three sides as the western side has a high wall for Mehrab. Since they were great patrons of art, they had constructed several places with Hyderabad such as Khursheed Jah Devdi and Falaknuma Palace among few others.

10. Purani Haveli

Purani Haveli Hyderabad

The Purani Haveli is one of the finest examples of 18th-century architecture that blends both European as well as Indian style of architecture. This palace was constructed to serve as the residence of Mir Momen, Peshwa of Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah. Thereafter, the palace was acquired by the second Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah II. He then renovated the palace and had designated the palace to his son Sikandar Jah, third Nizam of Hyderabad. Sikandar Jah lived there for a few years and after ascending the throne shifted his residence to Khilaurat complex in the Chowmahalla Palace.

The palace was abandoned until the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan ascended the throne and made it his official residence. Thereafter, the palace revived its lost glory and became a centre of attraction once again. Since the palace was abandoned for years, it came to be known as the Purani Haveli, which means Old Palace.

Today, Purani Haveli not only boasts of the grand architectural elements of the by-gone era that are visible on every nook and corner of the palace but also houses an interesting collection of antique furniture and other artefacts. The U-shaped facade has double-storeyed oblong-shaped wings and a single-storeyed building that served as the royal palace along with extensive courtyards.

The major attraction of Purani Haveli is the world’s largest wardrobe, made from Burma Teak, one of the finest in the world. The Nizam’s Museum at Purani Haveli displays a rich collection of artefacts that will give you a sneak-peek into the royal lifestyle of the Nizams.

11. Toli Masjid

Toli Masjid Hyderabad

Toli Masjid, also known as Damri Masjid, is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad. It was built in 1671 AD by Mir Musa Khan Mahaldar, a royal architect during the reign of Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah, the seventh ruler of the kingdom of Hyderabad.

The intricate work on the minarets and arches of the mosques are worth seeing. There is a large minaret on each corner of the structure and an additional six smaller minarets on each of the four sides of the mosque. The entrance of the mosque is designed with five decorative arches that will delight you with its artistry.

According to legends, Musa Khan Mahaldar built Toli Masjid from the amount of money that he had received during the construction of Mecca Masjid. Out of every rupee that was spent for the construction of Mecca Masjid, Musa Khan Mahaldar was given one damri (old Indian currency). Thus, the name Damri Masjid.

12. Spanish Mosque

Spanish Mosque Hyderabad

The Spanish Mosque located at Hyderabad is one of the greatest examples of Moorish architecture in India. It is also known by several names such as Mosque of the Moors, Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula and Jam e Masjid Aiwan-E-Begumpet. The architecture of the mosque stands in stark contrast to the other mosques that are widely seen in Hyderabad and other parts of the country.

The construction of Spanish Mosque was commissioned in 1887 by Sir Viqar ul-Umara after he visited the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba in Spain but the construction of this grand mosque was completed in 1906 by his heir, Nawab Sultan-Ul-Mulk. The mosque has a unique structure consisting of slender minarets, octagonal spires, pointed arches and minimal geometric pattern and inscriptions. These unique architectural features of the century-old Spanish Mosque makes it one of the most unique mosques in India.

The Paigah family often incorporated their understanding of architecture from far away lands as they often travelled for foreign trips in different parts of Europe. Thus, unlike other structures that were built in Hyderabad, the facades constructed by the Paigah family have a distinct architectural style in comparison to the Nizams.

Commute In Hyderabad: A Guide To Getting Around The Royal City

BannerImg

Getting around a populous bustling city in India can be challenging, especially if you are new to the place. So we bring to you the ways and means to ease your commute in Hyderabad.

More about the Royal City

Lying on the Deccan plateau, Hyderabad lays 541 meters above sea level and covers a total area of 625 km².   It is the fourth largest city in India and has hundreds of years of history. The original city was founded in the year of 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Now, this historic city is famed for the Chowmallah Palace, Charminar, Makkah Masjid, and the Falaknuma Palace. Telugu, Hindi, English, Urdu are amongst the most spoken languages in Hyderabad.

What to see

Charminar monument in hyderabad

The list of things to see in Hyderabad is certainly not short. A city of palaces and forts, it flourished under the Nizams, and at its heyday, was one of the grandest cities on the planet. Here are some highlights:

  • Golconda Fort
  • Chowmahalla Palace
  • Hussain Sagar Lake
  • Salar Jung Museum
  • Ramoji Film City
  • Qutub Shahi Tombs

The best time to visit Hyderabad is from November to  February. During this time, temperatures are mild with abundant sunshine. But, July, August, September and October can be very warm and humid due to the monsoons.

How To Get To Hyderabad

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Terminal is well-connected with major international cities and the domestic terminal, NT Rama Rao, is connected to most Indian cities. The airport is located in, approximately 20 kilometres away from the city.

The headquarters of South Central Railway Hyderabad is well connected with all major cities of India. There are railway stations at Nampally and Kachiguda. Trains leaving from these two stations can also be boarded at Secunderabad.

How to commute in Hyderabad

Autorickshaw commute in hyderabad

There are many ways to commute in Hyderabad. It has good bus service, autorickshaw service, as well as new app-based services. There is a local train service as well.

Travelling by bus can be the cheapest way to commute in Hyderabad. The TSRTC operates buses which run in the city and make it easy to cover the distance between different locations. There are five types of buses in Hyderabad (Ordinary, Metro Express, Metro Deluxe, AC, Volvo AC). Volvo Buses are the most comfortable and start at Rs. 35.

By Autorickshaw

Autorickshaws are often the best option for short distance travel. Many parts of the city also have shared autos. However be warned, Autos in Hyderabad never charge by meter and always overprice. This often makes cabs the cheaper option.

By Metro and Train

The Multi-Modal Transport System (or MMTS ) is the fastest service to reach your destination without any hassles. Though the trains are always crowded, they only travel to select destinations in the city. The newly opened Hyderabad Metro Rail network includes 3 lines that also cover many parts of the city.

Taxi is one of the best ways to commute in Hyderabad although slightly more expensive. While there are many independent operators like Vayu Travels, it’s best to use the newer app based cabs such as Ola and Uber, which assure service and courteous drivers. Metered Radio taxis are also available via their centralized call centre and are especially useful if you are looking for longer distances.

Tips to make your trip more wonderful

  • Hotels are generally first preference of travellers to stay. But guesthouses are also comfortable and cheap.
  • Do not believe your taxi drivers or tourist guides too much.
  • To avoid the crowd in Hyderabad get up early, and try to travel during winter

IPL 2024: Why Mumbai Indians have become a bigger threat this season

Five-time champions have started displaying their ruthless traits, which was missing

SPO_240412 MUMBAI-1712934695168

Dubai: Winning is a habit and similarly losing is also infectious that will lead to a rot. Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians have been a dominant force in the past, but over the last couple of seasons, they were not able to play their own brand of authoritative cricket.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

A change of guard, bringing the talented and proven leader Hardik Pandya to lead the Mumbai side for Season 17, didn’t yield the desired results and the fans vented their anger on the new captain. Mumbai are traditionally slow starters and after three successive loses, the MIPaltans squeezed out a 29-run win in a high-scoring game. Still the mojo was missing in that win but after winning the first points of the season more out of Delhi’s errors than their own brilliance.

Belief in their abilities

Nevertheless, the win brought the self-belief back among the war veterans, that also coincided with the return of world’s top Twenty20 plaayer Suryakumar Yadav back in action after a lengthy layoff due to ankle injury and a sports hernia operation. Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they came out all guns blazing with a clinical victory on the back of two dominating performances — Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav.

SPO_240412 MUMBAI1-1712934691297

The Indian pace ace showed his readiness for the Twenty20 World Cup by decimating the Royal Challengers, who still went on to make a challenging 196 in 20 overs. After Ishan Kishan gave a quick-fire start, Suryakumar Yadav, who got out for a duck in the previous game, showed why he is such a dangerous player in Twenty20 format by racing to a 19-ball 52. He falling short of equalling the record fastest half-century by just one delivery.

“Chasing (around) 200 at the Wankhede, it’s important to know if there is any dew factor,” Suryakumar said after Mumbai cruised to a seven-wicket victory with 27 balls to spare.

  • IPL 2024: Virat Kohli must improve his strike rate in Twenty20, Paddy Upton says

“If it is, you got to take your chances and that’s what we did today.

“When we passed the 10th over, the game was all set by Ishan and Rohit. We knew we had to finish early for that net run-rate thing.”

Suryakumar’s display of unorthodox shotmaking included a scoop from outside the off-stump that raced to the fine leg boundary and a sliced six off Reece Topley over deep point.

“I practise these shots a lot, it’s in my muscle memory now,” he said.

SPO_240412 MUMBAI2-1712934689578

Bumrah’s sublime bowling saw him named player of the match for his five for 21 in four overs that included the prize wicket of in-form Virat Kohli, who is currently holding the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer this season, and Suryakumar is happy they are on the same side.

“It’s been two to three years that I’ve never batted against Jasprit in the nets,” Suryakumar said of his Mumbai and India teammate. “Either he breaks my bat, or my foot.”

With the World Cup around the corner, the Indian cricket fans must be hoping it is the bat that breaks and not the foot that has just healed.

The second win must have also eased the pressure on Pandya as the fans now must be backing their new captain to take them to their sixth title. It is still long road ahead and Mumbai Indians will be facing a bigger test against another most successful team in IPL history, five-time champions Chennai Super Kings, at home on Sunday.

The team wears a settled look with almost all of the players having one or two good performances in the five matches so far, which gives them the depth, instead of relying on one or two players through the season, a bane that has afflicted Bengaluru, who bank heavily on individual brilliances, over the years.

Name change doesn't bring different luck

While the fortunes are changing for Mumbai, Royal Challengers fans once again must be left wondering about the fate of their team after fourth straight loss. They must have hoped that the change to the name at least brings some luck. Be it Bangalore or Bengaluru, the result seems to be the same as the team suffered a similar thrashing that they received from Mumbai in 2021.

Mumbai scored a resounding six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore three years ago, when the Blue and Gold jerseys were in full steam. Chasing 200, Mumbai rode on Suryakumar Yadav’s 35-ball 83, ably supported by young Nehal Wadhera’s unbeaten 34-ball 52, to chase down the target in 16.3 overs.

A similar win, in fact a better one after reaching the target in 15.3 overs, only highlights that the champions are back in their groove, rivals beware.
