How to Hide the Toolbar in Safari for iOS

ios7 safari icon

The Website View menu includes one-tap settings that let you change text size options , request the desktop version of a website , and more. Here we're going to check out the new Hide Toolbar option.

In earlier versions of iOS, Safari hides the top and bottom toolbars when scrolling down a web page, and to view them again you have to tap the URL or swipe down on the page.

In iOS 13 though, you can get Safari to hide the toolbar completely when navigating a website, which makes for a less disruptive experience.

how to hide the toolbar in safari ios

Simply select Hide Toolbar from the dropdown menu, and the toolbar will shrink to show just the URL. This more slimline arrangement will remain while you navigate the website, but you can re-instate the toolbar anytime by tapping the mini URL bar at the top of the screen.

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

iOS 15 introduces big changes to Safari — here's how to perform old, familiar features

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

Safari has been a mainstay of Apple's iPhones since the very beginning, but iOS 15 brings some major changes to the venerable web browser's appearance and functionality. Perhaps the biggest alteration is in the tab bar, the part of Safari's interface that governs how you interact with all the websites you've opened.

Most crucially, Safari's tab bar on the iPhone is now at the bottom of the screen by default, instead of the top. That takes some getting used to, not to mention an adjustment of muscle memory — assuming that you don't just go and make Safari's tab bar return to the top of the screen .

  • Here's how to use Live Text in iOS 15

The location of the tab bar may have changed, but other functions in Safari remain the same, even if they might look a little out of place if you keep that tab bar at the bottom of the screen. iOS 15 beta testers may also be confused, as Apple made several tweaks to the look of Safari in response to feedback from users.

To help you navigate around the redesigned Safari browser on your iPhone, here's a guide on how to use the tab bar in Safari on iOS 15, along with a reminder on how to handle some basic interactions.

How to open a new browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tabs button in the bottom right corner of Safari.

2. On the ensuing screen, tap the contact you want to share a website link with (it will be in the last app you connected with them) or pick an app for sharing the link.

The Share icon is also what you tap to perform other actions with a particular web page. These actions include copying the link, adding it as a bookmark or favorite, searching for a word or phrase on the page, and adding to your reading list.

How to reload a website

If you tested an early beta of iOS 15, reloading a website was unnecessarily complicated, forcing you tap a More button in the tab bar; only then could you access the reload button. But later on during the beta process, the reload button was added to the tab bar — just tap it when you want to reload a page.

How to use the new Safari tab bar in iOS 15 — if you want to

William Gallagher's Avatar

The new tab bar takes some getting used to, but it is useful

hide tab bar safari iphone

It's not as if the redesigned tab bar in Safari for iOS 15 has some enormously better capabilities on any one website than it did before. It does have a new way of moving between sites, but really what it has is a different approach, an unfamiliar design.

Apple wants tabs to get out of your way and that's laudable. It's more than laudable that Apple has brought the new Tab Groups feature to iOS 15, it's brilliant - and it's different. Everybody either loves Tab Groups or simply has no reason to even know they're there.

Whereas no one can use Safari without using tabs, so a major redesign is a very big and very unavoidable deal. Or it was until Apple introduced the option to go back to the old design .

How to switch between the old and new tab designs

On your iPhone, go to Settings , then scroll down to Safari . There's a straightforward toggle, showing one icon for Tab Bar , one for Single Tab .

Choose between the new and old Safari design in iOS 15

Tap the one you want, and you're set. Just don't change it too quickly, give the new tab bar a chance.

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15

When you open Safari, the page that you see first is whatever site you were last reading — and there's now a floating bar at the bottom. That bar contains the address of the site, plus a Share button and one to do with rearranging tabs.

How to go to a new site

  • If the bar disappears, tap and pull on the site to scroll — and bring the bar back up
  • Tap on the address of the current site
  • When it highlights, tap the small delete button to the left
  • Start typing a new address in there — or a new search term — and press Go

That all sounds clear, sensible, and easy, and it is. Except for how the tab bar is at the bottom of the page and you probably have very, very many years of experience of reaching for the top of the screen instead.

It will take you time to unlearn that, but there is an advantage to the new tab bar. You may even like it for this, it's a revised way of moving between tabs.

Bring up the new tab bar and you can swipe between your open tabs

How to move between tabs on the tab bar

  • Bring up the tab bar
  • Press on it, then swipe to one side or the other
  • You're immediately taken to the next tab, assuming you have more than one open.

You do have more than one tab open, you do have very many more. We're not judging.

And so this swiping is a lot faster than before. Previously you would have to tap the tab button, find what you want from the thumbnail images, and then tap to go into the tab you were after.

Yet you can still do that. Bring up that tab bar, tap on the tabs button at far right, and you get a view of all your tabs. Rather than the old Rolodex-style of thumbnails where you had to move forwards and backwards to see you what you want, it's now a Photos-style grid.

From that grid, you can tap to go into any tab. You can also tap on the small delete button to get rid of the tab completely.

What you can't do, unfortunately, is drag the tabs around to arrange them. You can press and hold on any one tab and get a menu that gives some sorting options, but they're limited.

The new tab bar is also a convenient route into iOS 15's excellent Tab Groups feature

Your choices are to Arrange Tabs by Title , or to Arrange Tabs by Website .

Except, if that seems a bit constrained, something else the new design brings is the ability to organize tabs more. This is crossing into the Tab Groups feature, but as you press and hold on any tab's thumbnail, you do get two particularly key options.

If you have six tabs open, pressing and holding on one gets you a menu that offers to let you move all of those tabs to an existing group. And you also get the option to move them all to a brand new group.

What you can't do is pick a few of the tabs and move those, it's all or nothing. Or at least it is at present. Maybe we already know something that'll be in iOS 16.

How to Hide the Tab Bar in Safari on an iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 Plus has a very large screen, and this has allowed for some changes that can make the iPhone usage experience resemble a desktop experience.

This can be seen in the Safari Web browser with the inclusion of a tab bar that is visible when the device is rotated to landscape orientation.

But if you do not wish for this tab bar to be displayed at the top of your screen, then you have the option of removing it from Safari.

This will require you to make a minor change to Safari’s settings, which you can learn how to do with our short guide below.

Remove the Tab Bar in Safari on an iPhone

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 6 Plus, in iOS 8.1.3.

Step 1: Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen.

Step 2: Scroll down and select the Safari option.

open the safari settings menu

Step 3: Scroll down and tap the button to the right of Show Tab Bar . You will know that the option has been turned off when there is not any green shading around the button, as in the image below.

You can still switch between tabs in Safari when this option is disabled by tapping the square icon at the top-right corner of the Safari screen.

Now that you know how to hide the tab bar in Safari on an iPhone 6 Plus, you can remove it from the screen so that more of the space is being used for the content on the Web page you are viewing.

How To : Keep Safari's Toolbars Hidden While Scrolling Webpages in iOS 13

Keep Safari's Toolbars Hidden While Scrolling Webpages in iOS 13

Normally, when you scroll down a webpage in Safari on your iPhone, it automatically hides the bottom toolbar and minimizes the top Smart Search field. But as soon as you scroll back up, they both reappear, which can be pretty annoying if you don't need them. Apple's iOS 13 update brings many new features to Safari , one of which solves the toolbar issue so you can keep it hidden when reading.

When you lock the top and bottom toolbars in their minimized and hidden positions, it applies to the current tab you're in as well as any tabs you navigate to from it. But there are exceptions to that rule, as you'll soon see, which relates to how you disable the hiding of the toolbars.

  • Don't Miss: 200+ Exciting New Features in iOS 13 for Your iPhone

To hide the top and bottom toolbars in Safari, tap on the "AA" in the top left to open the Website View menu. Next, select "Hide Toolbar" from the menu, and the top Smart Search bar slims down to show the URL only, as if you were scrolling down, while the bottom toolbar disappears.

How to Keep Safari's Toolbars Hidden While Scrolling Webpages in iOS 13

Here they are compared, auto-hide vs. hidden locked:

How to Keep Safari's Toolbars Hidden While Scrolling Webpages in iOS 13

If you scroll up or tap anywhere within the website (images, interactive menus, links, etc.), the toolbars will remain minimized. By tapping on hyperlinks, you could successfully navigate a never-ending supply of webpages without the toolbars coming back. So it locks them for the whole session in that tab until you say otherwise.

Even better, if a link opens in a new tab, and even if you open a link in the background and navigate it via the tab switcher (which opens temporarily to let you do that), you will continue to see the toolbars hidden in the other tabs. The only time they will go back to normal is if you tap the minimize Smart Search toolbar up top. Doing so clears the lock, and the top and bottom toolbars will hide and unhide automatically as they always have.

How to Keep Safari's Toolbars Hidden While Scrolling Webpages in iOS 13

If you want to go to another website in another tab, tap on the minimized bar at the top to bring back both the larger Smart Search field and the bottom toolbar. However, you'll have to hide the toolbars all over again anytime you maximize them manually by tapping the top minimize toolbar.

Also, worth noting is that there's no way to lock either toolbar in place when they are maximized, so you'll still get that auto-minimize/hide when scrolling on pages. But rarely would you want less screen real estate for reading than more, so having only the minimize/hide lock makes total sense.

Just updated your iPhone? You'll find new emoji, enhanced security, podcast transcripts, Apple Cash virtual numbers, and other useful features. There are even new additions hidden within Safari. Find out what's new and changed on your iPhone with the iOS 17.4 update.

Browse privately in Safari on iPhone

Visit sites privately

You can use Private Browsing to open private tabs that don’t appear in History on iPhone or in the list of tabs on your other devices. Tabs in Private Browsing aren’t shared with your other Apple devices, even if you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

If you have a passcode set on your iPhone, Private Browsing locks when it’s not in use. Private Browsing may not lock immediately.

the Tabs button

Swipe right on the tab bar at the bottom of the screen until Private Browsing opens, then tap Unlock.

Safari is open to Private Browsing. In the center of the screen are the words Private Browsing Is Locked. Below that is an Unlock button.

Note: Any Safari extensions you have installed that have access to browsing data are automatically turned off in Private Browsing. To turn on an extension in Private Browsing, see Use extensions .

Choose a search engine for Private Browsing

Tap Private Search Engine, then choose a search engine.

View the Privacy Report

Safari helps prevent trackers from following you across websites and viewing your IP address. You can review the Privacy Report to see a summary of trackers that have been encountered and prevented by Intelligent Tracking Prevention on the current webpage you’re visiting. You can also review and adjust Safari settings to keep your browsing activities private from others who use the same device, and help protect yourself from malicious websites.

the Page Settings button

Use iCloud Private Relay to browse the web with more privacy

When you subscribe to iCloud+ , you can use iCloud Private Relay to help prevent websites and network providers from creating a detailed profile about you. When iCloud Private Relay is turned on, the traffic leaving your iPhone is encrypted and sent through two separate internet relays. This prevents websites from seeing your IP address and exact location while it prevents network providers from collecting your browsing activity in Safari.

See Protect your web browsing with iCloud Private Relay on iPhone to learn how to:

Turn iCloud Private Relay completely on or off for your iPhone.

Turn iCloud Private Relay on or off for a specific Wi-Fi or cellular network.

Turn iCloud Private Relay off temporarily.

Set the specificity of your IP address location.

Temporarily allow a website to see your IP address

If a website relies on IP filtering, monitoring, or rate-limiting, it might require your IP address to be visible. You can turn off iCloud Private Relay temporarily for that website only.

Note: iCloud Private Relay isn’t available in all countries or regions. See the iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability website .

Tap Show IP Address.

Your IP address remains visible to that website until you leave the website or close its Safari tab. iCloud Private Relay remains on for other websites.

To turn off or pause iCloud Private Relay for all websites, see Protect your web browsing with iCloud Private Relay on iPhone .

Control privacy and security settings for Safari

Prevent Cross-Site Tracking: Safari limits third-party cookies and data by default. Turn this option off to allow cross-site tracking.

Hide IP address: Safari automatically protects your IP address from known trackers. For eligible iCloud+ subscribers, your IP address is protected from trackers and websites as you browse in Safari. If this option is off, your IP address isn’t hidden.

Fraudulent Website Warning: Safari displays a warning if you’re visiting a suspected phishing website. Turn this option off if you don’t want to be warned about fraudulent websites.

Camera: Choose whether Safari websites can use your camera without asking you first. Tap Camera, then choose Ask, Deny, or Allow.

Microphone: Choose whether Safari websites can use your microphone without asking you first. Tap Microphone, then choose Ask, Deny, or Allow.

Location: Choose whether Safari websites can use your location without asking you first. Tap Location, then choose Ask, Deny, or Allow.

Introduction

When it comes to browsing the internet, privacy and organization are two key factors that many users prioritize. Whether you're conducting research, shopping online, or simply exploring the web, the ability to manage your tabs discreetly can be incredibly valuable. Fortunately, there are various methods available to hide tabs in Safari, Apple's popular web browser. By implementing these techniques, you can safeguard your browsing activities and streamline your online experience.

In this article, we will explore three effective methods for concealing tabs in Safari. From utilizing the browser's built-in features to leveraging third-party applications and Safari extensions, you'll discover a range of options to suit your specific needs. Whether you're aiming to maintain a clutter-free browsing environment or safeguard your privacy from prying eyes, these methods offer practical solutions for managing your tabs with ease.

So, if you've ever found yourself juggling multiple tabs and wishing for a more discreet way to organize your browsing sessions, you're in the right place. Let's delve into the various approaches that can empower you to hide tabs in Safari , enhancing your browsing privacy and efficiency along the way.

Method 1: Using Private Browsing Mode

One of the most straightforward ways to hide tabs in Safari is by utilizing the browser's built-in Private Browsing Mode. This feature is designed to enhance privacy by preventing the storage of browsing history, cookies, and other data. While Private Browsing Mode doesn't explicitly hide individual tabs, it effectively conceals your browsing activity from being recorded in the browser's history. This can be particularly useful when you want to keep your browsing sessions discreet, especially if you're using a shared device or simply prefer to maintain a level of privacy.

To activate Private Browsing Mode in Safari, follow these simple steps:

  • Open Safari on your Mac or iOS device.
  • Navigate to the "File" menu on a Mac or the "Tabs" button on an iOS device.
  • Select "New Private Window" on a Mac or "Private" on an iOS device.

Upon enabling Private Browsing Mode, a new window will open, indicating that you are now browsing privately. Any tabs opened within this private window will not be stored in your browsing history once the window is closed. This means that you can browse without leaving a trail of visited websites in your regular browsing history.

It's important to note that while Private Browsing Mode offers a level of privacy, it does not completely conceal your browsing activity from internet service providers, network administrators, or websites themselves. Additionally, any bookmarks or downloads made during a private browsing session will still be saved unless manually deleted.

Overall, using Private Browsing Mode in Safari provides a convenient way to keep your browsing activities private and prevent them from being recorded in your browsing history. While it may not hide individual tabs in the traditional sense, it offers a practical solution for maintaining a level of privacy while browsing the web.

Method 2: Using Third-Party Apps

In addition to Safari's native features, users have the option to employ third-party applications to effectively hide tabs and enhance their browsing privacy. These apps are designed to offer advanced tab management capabilities, allowing users to organize, conceal, and protect their browsing activities with ease. By leveraging these third-party solutions, individuals can tailor their browsing experience to align with their specific privacy and organizational preferences.

One notable third-party app that facilitates tab management and privacy is "Hider," which is available for macOS and iOS devices. Hider enables users to discreetly hide and password-protect their tabs, providing a secure and seamless browsing experience. With its intuitive interface and robust privacy features, Hider empowers users to maintain a clutter-free browsing environment while safeguarding their sensitive information from unauthorized access.

Another popular option for managing tabs and enhancing privacy is the "Ghost Browser" application. Ghost Browser offers a range of advanced tab management features, including the ability to create separate "sessions" for different browsing activities. This enables users to compartmentalize their tabs based on specific tasks or projects, effectively concealing their browsing activities from intersecting with one another. By leveraging Ghost Browser's session-based approach, users can maintain a high level of privacy and organization without compromising on functionality.

Furthermore, "Tab Organizer" is a third-party app that focuses on simplifying tab management and decluttering the browsing experience. With its intuitive interface and powerful organizational tools, Tab Organizer allows users to group, hide, and prioritize their tabs effortlessly. By leveraging its customizable tab management features, users can effectively conceal tabs while streamlining their browsing sessions, resulting in a more efficient and organized online experience.

These third-party apps offer valuable solutions for individuals seeking to hide tabs in Safari and elevate their browsing privacy. By integrating these applications into their workflow, users can benefit from enhanced tab management capabilities, robust privacy features, and a more personalized browsing experience. Whether it's discreetly concealing tabs, organizing browsing activities, or safeguarding sensitive information, these third-party apps provide practical and effective solutions for managing tabs in Safari.

Method 3: Using Safari Extensions

Safari extensions offer a powerful way to customize the browsing experience, and they can also be utilized to effectively hide tabs and bolster privacy. By integrating Safari extensions specifically designed for tab management, users can gain access to a diverse range of features that enable them to conceal, organize, and protect their browsing activities with precision.

One notable Safari extension that excels in tab management and privacy is "Tabby – Window & Tab Manager." This extension empowers users to seamlessly hide and organize tabs within Safari, providing a streamlined and clutter-free browsing environment. With Tabby, users can effortlessly hide individual tabs or entire windows, allowing for discreet browsing without the need to close or bookmark tabs. Additionally, Tabby offers advanced tab grouping and organization features, enabling users to categorize their tabs based on specific projects, tasks, or interests. This level of customization not only enhances privacy but also contributes to a more organized and efficient browsing experience.

Another valuable Safari extension for tab management is "Tab Suspender." This extension is designed to optimize browsing performance by suspending inactive tabs, effectively reducing memory usage and decluttering the tab bar. By suspending tabs that are not actively in use, users can maintain a cleaner tab interface while preserving their browsing sessions for future access. This approach not only enhances browsing efficiency but also provides a discreet way to hide tabs that are temporarily inactive, contributing to a more streamlined and organized browsing experience.

Furthermore, "Ghostery Lite" is a privacy-focused Safari extension that offers robust tracking protection and enhanced privacy features. While its primary function is to block trackers and enhance online privacy, Ghostery Lite also provides users with the ability to hide specific tabs from prying eyes. By leveraging its comprehensive privacy tools, users can maintain a discreet browsing environment while safeguarding their online activities from intrusive tracking mechanisms.

By integrating these Safari extensions into their browsing workflow, users can benefit from enhanced tab management capabilities, advanced privacy features, and a more personalized browsing experience. Whether it's discreetly concealing tabs, optimizing browsing performance, or bolstering online privacy, these Safari extensions offer practical and effective solutions for managing tabs in Safari, ultimately contributing to a more secure, organized, and efficient browsing experience.

In conclusion, the ability to hide tabs in Safari is a valuable feature that can significantly enhance browsing privacy and organization. By exploring the methods outlined in this article, users can gain practical insights into managing their tabs discreetly while optimizing their browsing experience.

From leveraging Safari's built-in Private Browsing Mode to utilizing third-party apps and Safari extensions, individuals have a range of options to suit their specific privacy and organizational preferences. Private Browsing Mode offers a convenient way to keep browsing activities private and prevent them from being recorded in the browsing history, providing a level of discretion for users seeking enhanced privacy.

Furthermore, third-party applications such as Hider, Ghost Browser, and Tab Organizer offer advanced tab management capabilities, empowering users to conceal and protect their browsing activities with ease. How to hide favorites on safari's new tab page on iphone and ipad.

Tired of Favorites links cluttering up a blank Safari tab or window on iPhone or iPad? Here's how to get rid of them without deleting any Favorites.

Quick Links

The quest for a truly blank safari page, step 1: make an empty favorites folder in safari, step 2: configure safari in settings.

Normally, Safari on iPhone and iPad displays a list of Favorites on its blank pages whenever you open a new window or tab. Unfortunately, Apple does not provide a simple and obvious way to disable this, but there is a way to do it. Here's how to set it up.

Ordinarily, if you have any Favorites saved in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, they will show up on a "blank" page like this after you create a new tab or open a new page.

Using a simple trick, we're going to get rid of that group of Favorites links on your Safari's blank page, and you won't need to delete your Favorites to do it. The key is to make Safari display the contents of an empty Favorites subfolder that we are going to create.

Although we've used iPhone screenshots, the following instructions work for the iPad as well.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and tap the "Bookmarks" button, which is an icon that looks like an open book. On the iPhone, it's located in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. On the iPad, you'll find it at the top of the screen just to the left of the address bar.

In the menu that appears, select the "Bookmarks" tab (which looks like the outline of an open book), then tap "Edit."

Once Edit mode starts, tap "New Folder" at the bottom of the menu.

In the "Title" text box, type in the name "Empty." Technically, you can name this folder anything you like, but the name "Empty" will help you remember its purpose in the future.

After that, tap the "Location" drop-down menu and select "Favorites." Then tap "Done."

Then tap "Done" again to exit Edit mode.

We're done in Safari for now. Next, we'll go into Settings to make a small change.

Now we need to tell Safari to display the empty folder of Favorites that we just created. When it displays this empty folder, no Favorites will appear, and Safari will generate a truly blank page.

To do that, open "Settings" and navigate to "Safari."

In the "General" section, click "Favorites."

In the list that pops up, choose the "Empty" folder we created earlier.

After that, tap back once, then exit Settings.

The next time you open Safari to a blank page, you will see no Favorites at all.

Simplicity at last! If you want to keep the page blank, remember to never save any Favorites to the "Empty" folder we created. Keep it empty, and you've always see this blank gray page when you open a new tab or window in Safari on iPhone or iPad.

I suggest using Apple menu - Software Update (after backing up your computer) to get a newer Safari & OS version.

The tab bar is hidden by default unless there's more than one tab open - you can alter that with the following Terminal command... do it after quitting Safari.

defaults write -app Safari AlwaysShowTabBar -bool YES
