Your Itinerary

1 Embark in New York City, NY Enjoy a delightful day of cruising along the Hudson River to West Point.

2 Catskill, NY Steeped in history and tradition, the United States Military Academy at West Point offers visitors the opportunity to walk on the grandiose grounds once trekked by some of the nation’s greatest generals, like Patton, Eisenhower and MacArthur. Founded in 1802 by an act of Congress, the Academy has been of significant military importance to America since Revolutionary days. Tour the West Point Museum and Cadet Chapel and view magnificent vistas of the Hudson Valley from atop the campus grounds.

3 Albany, NY The picturesque region of what is today the city of Albany was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609 on a failed attempt to find a quick passage to China for the Dutch East India Company. Today the capital city of New York state welcomes visitors with majestic architecture and grand views of the beautiful Hudson River Valley. Be sure to explore the New York State Museum and the newly renovated State Capitol building, originally built in the late 1800’s.

4 Kingston, NY/Hyde Park, NY With the invention of the steamboat in 1807, the Hudson River became a waterway of leisurely travel with literally hundreds of vessels making their way up and down the picturesque passage. Originally the capital of New York in the late 1700’s, today Kingston preserves the maritime heritage of the Hudson River at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Kingston is also located in an area of the Hudson River often referred to as “Millionaires Row” – with palatial estates and grand mansions reminiscent of the mid-1800’s when wealthy New York businessmen began buying property in the beautiful valley for summer retreats.

5 West Point, NY The US Military Academy at West Point offers visitors the opportunity to walk on the hallowed grounds once traversed by some of the nation's greatest generals.

6 Sleepy Hollow, NY The riverside town of Sleepy Hollow is forever immortalized in the works of one of the country’s first great writers, Washington Irving. The author found inspiration in the tales and scenery of the Hudson Valley as the basis for “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” Today Washington Irving’s country home, Sunnyside, is a Registered National Historic Landmark and welcomes visitors with legends and lore.

7 New York City, NY Discover the sights, sounds and history of this extraordinary city! From South Street Seaport to Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, New York encapsulates the culture and spirit of America. Explore the Big Apple on your own, or join a narrated tour of the city’s biggest landmarks.

8 Disembark in New York City, NY End your journey where it began in the vibrant city of Manhattan. Reflect upon your wonderful adventure as you begin your travels home. Or, stay an extra day or two to explore more.

Macy's 4th of July fireworks returning to Hudson River this year for first time since 2013

WABC logo

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Macy's 4th of July fireworks are returning to the Hudson River this year for the first time since 2013.

Macys says the "display will feature thousands of shells and an array of effects from barges positioned along the Hudson River with multiple viewing opportunities in Manhattan between West 14th and West 34th Streets and in New Jersey."

After lighting up the East River for decades, the fireworks shifted to the Hudson River in 2009. It was supposed to be a one-time change celebrating the 400th anniversary of the explorer Henry Hudson's arrival in these parts, but Macy's then staged the fireworks on the Hudson for four more years, through the 404th anniversary.

The move prompted increasing outcry from outer boroughs, and when Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014, the fireworks were back on the East River, where they have been since. At the time, de Blasio called returning the fireworks to the East River "a priority" as it ensures "many more New Yorkers" could can view them.

However, New Jersey residents lost their cross-state benefit.

Now, the decision to move the fireworks back to the Hudson River has come with some fireworks of its own.

"It's not fair, it should stay in New York, you know, at least, and give the most value to the to the New Yorkers," said Long Island City resident Ivonne Azurdia. "And I don't I don't see why they would move it. You know, I'm sure everyone in Long Island City is going to be a little bit upset about that."

However, Macy's says that the show is for everyone.

"We love all of our residents of New York City, this is Macy's gift to New York City and America," said executive producer Will Coss. "Each 4th of July, we're spreading the love. We've been on the east side for quite some time. We look forward to sharing the show this year with our West Side residents."

During the last decade period, Jersey City's fireworks show grew in prominence, giving the Garden State its own show.

"New Jersey is proud to celebrate Independence Day this year with a dazzling display of fireworks planned in collaboration with our neighbors across the Hudson," said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. "For the first time in recent years, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks will light up our sky above the Hudson River. We are excited to work with Mayor Adams and Macy's to view the country's largest Independence Day celebration from our backyard as we commemorate 248 years of nationhood."

New York News | Macy’s 4th of July fireworks to return to the Hudson River for first time in 11 years

Usually held over the East River to afford New York City residents a view from more boroughs, the flashy exhibit migrated to the Hudson in 2009 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in the area, West Side Rag noted. It stayed there for five years before moving back east in 2014 .

This year’s extravaganza will “feature a dynamic collection of shells and a host of effects incorporating a variety of colors and shapes synced to a curated musical score presented alongside live performances,” with fireworks launched from barges between West 14th and West 34th streets, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks told the Daily News in a statement.

“This year’s Macy’s 4th of Fireworks display will launch an inspiring spectacle of patriotic color, light and sound from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade,” said Will Coss, executive producer of the show, promising “a showstopping and high-flying salute to the nation.”

Regarding the river switch, organizers are “ spreading the love ,” Coss told ABC News. “We’ve been on the East Side for quite some time. We look forward to sharing the show this year with our West Side residents.”

Those West Siders should be able to ogle the display from just about any spot from Riverside South and Riverside Park, or from a similarly positioned rooftop, West Side Rag reported.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wasn’t complaining, especially since the Garden State’s view will have the Big Apple skyline as a backdrop.

“New Jersey is proud to celebrate Independence Day this year with a dazzling display of fireworks planned in collaboration with our neighbors across the Hudson,” he said. “We are excited to work with Mayor Adams and Macy’s to view the country’s largest Independence Day celebration from our backyard as we commemorate 248 years of nationhood.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams were equally enthusiastic.

“We look forward to seeing the incredible display from the Hudson River this year,” Hochul said, with Adams chiming in, “We can’t wait to welcome the crowds this year at the show!”

Macy's 4th of July Fireworks returning to Hudson River after years on East River. Where to see them.

By Jesse Zanger

Updated on: May 1, 2024 / 7:06 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK - Macy's 4th of July Fireworks are returning to New York's Hudson River after more than a decade.

The spectacle has taken place on the East River for years, to the consternation of West Siders.

Where will the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks take place?

This year, Macy's says the barges for the spectacular will be lined up between West 14th and 34th streets on the Hudson River.

Just last year, Macy's said the location has bounced between the Hudson and East Rivers almost evenly over the years , and that factors determining the location include the show's design, size and scale, safety needs, public viewing locations, and resources, which change every year.

Macy's says the show will feature "thousands of shells and an array of effects" and there will be "multiple viewing opportunities" in Manhattan and in New Jersey.

The tradition has taken place since 1976.

"There's no better place to celebrate"

"The historic Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show attracts thousands of viewers from around the nation to see the incredible fireworks and celebrate America's birthday right here in the Big Apple," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. "Every year, Macy's illuminates the city's skyline to commemorate Independence Day driving our city's economy and supporting local businesses. We can't wait to welcome the crowds this year at the show!"

"For millions of Americans the Macy's Fireworks are a highlight of their 4th of July festivities, and we look forward to seeing the incredible display from the Hudson River this year," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said. "There's no better place to celebrate our nation's independence than in New York, so book your holiday travel now and experience everything our state has to offer."

"New Jersey is proud to celebrate Independence Day this year with a dazzling display of fireworks planned in collaboration with our neighbors across the Hudson," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said. "For the first time in recent years, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks will light up our sky above the Hudson River. We are excited to work with Mayor Adams and Macy's to view the country's largest Independence Day celebration from our backyard as we commemorate 248 years of nationhood."

"This year's Macy's 4th of Fireworks display will launch an inspiring spectacle of patriotic color, light and sound from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade. Marking the nation's largest Independence Day celebration, the display will offer a showstopping and high-flying salute to the nation," Will Coss, executive producer of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, said.
