If you are looking at the Cleveland RTX Zipcore, or the brand new Cleveland RTX Full Face, you may be curious about the stock shaft, dubbed the " Dynamic Gold Spinner Tour Issue".

😎

Not trying to bag on Cleveland with this post, I actually have a KBS 120 8 iron shaft in my RTX4, just wanted to toss this out there in case anyone wanted to know what was in the mystery meat.

So, the “spinner” trick is to put an X100 8i into the wedges for an S300 iron shaft player. That is, you go up in flex once then soft step.

I play KBS Tour regular (110) in irons, and 8i KBS Tour stiff (120) shafts in wedges. That’s what I was told to do.

The “Tour issue spinner” is an S300 8i, meaning, shouldn’t it be basically suited for a “full weight” dynamic gold r300 player?

Why do so many your pros go the other way? X100 in irons down to s400 in wedges? Why don’t we see X7 8i shafts in their wedges?

🤷🏻‍♂️

What is in my  Sun Mountain C-130 bag or Jones MyGolfSpy bag

:cobra-small:

I’m referencing the “8i spinner” or “Rifle Precision Spinner” trick:

“Many years ago I learned in Royal Precision Rifle Shaft Certification class how to create the Rifle Spinner Wedge Shaft. The formula was simple, go up a flex and use the 8 iron.”

https://www.golfshaftreviews.info/kbs-wedge-golf-shafts/

I guess this gives a very similar overall CPM but a more active tip section (without feeling completely alien to the iron shafts of one lesser flex). There’s lots of people saying to put an X100 8i into the wedges if you play S300, etc. This is what I was taught.

However, a ton of pros plays X100 in the irons, and many of them gravitate to S400 (supposedly tip trimmed 3/8”) in the wedges. This gets called “Tiger Stepping” or “Vokey stepping” (depending on the post). I’m guessing this also CPMs a little softer overall without an over soft tip section?

Finally, we now have the “Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Spinner”, which is an S300 8i. It is neither the “8i spinner” trick (unless you play R300), nor is it “Tiger Stepping” for the X100 player (because it is 1.75 steps softer than a 3/8” tip trimmed S300 PW/9i shaft).

True Temper and Cleveland Golf generally know what they are doing, but in this case it seems like the “Dynamic Gold Tour issue spinner” is a mass market shaft meant for the R300 (average swing speed player)?

Made popular by none other than Tiger Woods. Most commonly referred to as “Tiger Stepping” a wedge shaft

I guess what I’m saying is this shaft from True Temper isn’t the “8i spinner trick” and it’s not “Tiger stepping” (which are different things from what I understand).

All it is, is a slightly lighter, slightly softer (relative to Vokey and Callaway stock shafts) mass market wedge shaft meant to fit average swing speed golfers. The tour issue verbiage is marketing, this product is aimed at the middle of the bell curve, club golfers with a 95mph driver speed.

Tour issue verbiage is thrown around for marketing by many oems not just Cleveland so I don’t really see the issue there.

As for the tour issue spinner shaft being aimed at the middle of the bell curve 95mph driver guy,  I don’t agree. I swing 110+ and love everything about the ti spinner shaft in my full face Zipcore.  I have never been a high wedge spin guy and the little bit of help I get from the shaft has been welcomed. That is who the shaft is aimed at. Driver speed or any club speed has nothing to do with it.

heavygolffeels

If it works for you, it works for you. It is a softer overall shaft than the stock shaft in a Vokey or a Callaway - that's all I'm saying.

Up in flex is very unconventional. As you hinted at, most pros play wedges shafts that are softer than their iron shafts. Just looking at a couple recent winners and WITB: Cam Champ playing X7 in irons and s400 in wedges, Morikawa X100 in irons and s400 in wedges, Oosthuizen X100 irons and s400 wedges, Rory rifle 7.0 in irons and 6.5 in wedges.

The reason is the softer flex in the tip section generates more spin.

The difficult part in club building is that players typically prefer the wedge shaft to weigh more than an iron shaft. Thats why S400s are so popular on tour where plenty of guys are using 120-130 gram iron shafts. There arent a whole lot of other options in something heavier than 130 grams and not an X flex.

Additionally, the tour spinner shaft is absolutely not for the average golfer with 110 gram irons shafts and sub 95 speed. Callaway is mostly using a DG 115 wedge shaft which is more of that bell curve you were talking about. I believe stock Vokey is S200, which is also softer. Taylormade is using KBS 115 and S200. The DG spinner is still low launching and 128 grams. Yes, it it soft stepped, but still quite stout for a stock shaft.

It's like 3% max more stiff than a REGULAR flex XP115 wedge shaft (21,500 vs 22,500). The tip section is slightly stiffer in the XP115 REGULAR flex, but overall they should launch about the same based on the EI progression.

I was curious about weight, so i cut the grip off one I had laying around. CUT - It weighed in at 113g with the ferrule cap on. For reference, a KBS tour regular (110) PW shaft weighs in at 105g cut w a ferrule cap on.

unnamed.jpg.1808e4c91f5714b5080c644d5564e9f8.jpg

I don't think this shaft is very different from the "mass market" shafts you mention (DG 115, KBS 115, etc). Which is what I'm trying to say.

Original EI image here, had to screen grab, scale, and map curves on a common axis to produce what you see above.

If it works for you - fantastic, it's not a bad shaft. This is just data, no judgments attached.

When compared to the Tour’s leading Dynamic Gold S400, Dynamic Gold Spinner features a 5% weight reduction and longer, more active tip section to maximize spin and give you Tour player stopping power.

Great service

I received the order in 2-days! What a difference these shafts make. They are heavier and the ball flight is much straighter, smaller dispersion area. Upgrading to a better and correct shaft is a big deal. The Spinner wedge shafts are completely different from the stock shafts. They are heavier and much better feel to chip and hit shots. The spin might depend on how you strike the ball and the type of ball you use. I don’t get excess spin but, can get spin if I need it. I think the price was great too.

GolfWRX Early Look: New True Temper Project X IO, U, LS, and Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Spinner shafts

tour issue spinner shaft

It’s without question that True Temper Sports holds the No. 1 spot for steel shafts with a, well, steel grip. Whenever I do weekly WITBs, I type “Project X” and “True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue” to the point of arthritis.

Our resident tour photographer snapped some pics of True Temper’s latest offerings—the Project X LS , IO, U and Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 “Spinner” shafts.

For more information, and to add to what our Ryan Barath wrote about the PX LS back in June , I spoke with True Temper’s Product Marketing Coordinator Keenan Phillips, and this is the intel he shared.

Project X LS

“Low Spin” Yes, this shaft is for the player who generates a lot of spin and launch. Not for the faint of heart, it was designed to parallel the Tour Issue X7 but for the PX player.

Rival comparisons would KBS C-Taper, KBS $Taper, X7, and a few others. The point is, if you are looking to find some height, look to the LZ, if you want to knock it down, the LS is your whip.

From Project X

“Project X LS started as an engineering concept to create a shaft to best suit the increasingly stronger golfer. The new era of elite-level golfers are stronger, more athletic and faster than ever, and because of this, they naturally create more launch and spin. With this in mind, we tasked our engineers with one thing—to create the lowest launching and spinning steel golf shaft on the market. The result was a shaft that launched a degree lower and spun up to 500 rpm less than its predecessor.

“Project X LS (Low Spin) is the next evolution of the original Project X. It features an ultra-stable and stiff design that minimizes spin while providing a tight feel to keep up with even the strongest swingers on Tour. LS also features a unique brushed chrome finish that reduces glare and gives Project X LS a distinct look.”

Project X IO

tour issue spinner shaft

If you read the info on the website, you may get the impression that the IO rivals Dynamic Gold’s AMT in certain aspects. Yes and no. From a performance standpoint, maybe, but the way in is a bit different. Instead of adjusting weight up and down the set to achieve performance, the IO dials in stiffness areas across the set to get what you want. The popular PXi shaft was the foundation for the IO which gave PX players a lighter option but still maintaining the preferred flight windows.

For example, if we were comparing this to the Fujikura Ventus line, the 5.5 (105 grams) IO plays like the Red, 6.0 (110 grams), like the Blue, and the 6.5 (115 grams) like the Black. Simple enough.

Another thing to note, this shaft wasn’t designed as a “Tour part.” You may see some a couple sneak out there but not many—not the spirit of the design.

From Project X:

“The new Project X IO was born from the concept that not all golfers need the same thing from a shaft. While the stronger players require launch and spin reduction to control their ball, many golfers need more launch and spin to help maximize their distances.”

“Project X IO takes the DNA of the popular PXi shaft and evolves it by having each shaft flex designed with a specific weight and trajectory progression in mind. As Project X IO increases in flex, it gets 5g heavier and is geometrically modified to launch lower…Project X IO is ideal for players who love the stability of Project X but need an easier to load shaft profile and are looking for a lighter weight option.”

tour issue spinner shaft

Project X U

tour issue spinner shaft

Yes, it’s a utility shaft, but for fitters and builders, it’s a breath of fresh air. With utility irons becoming more and more popular across the board, builders face difficulty finding a lighter weight steel option that gives players not only the flight they want but something that doesn’t feel like it comes from another planet.

Project X U was engineered to solve both of those issues. Now players can have a steel shaft in their utility iron that optimizes speed and maintains a penetrating ball flight. Once again, PXi was the way into this, and the engineers have taken it the next step to give every player an option.

“Utility irons and hybrids are designed to perform differently than a traditional iron but are often paired with shafts designed for traditional irons. The new Project X Utility (U) was specifically crafted to work with utility and hybrid heads.

“The Project X team of engineers looked at what specific characteristics were needed to optimize utility club performance. They started with a lightweight design in all flexes to maintain clubhead speed while still providing the consistency of steel. As shaft flex gets stiffer…U utilizes varying geometrics to lower launch—creating the optimized launch for each flex.”

tour issue spinner shaft

Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Spinner

tour issue spinner shaft

Before True Temper came out with wedge-specific S400 shafts, tour builders used to use 8-iron shafts for wedges to maintain weight and add some feel in the tip section, which in turn added spin. The longer tip section was a common sight in bags and will become more popular with this release. True Temper already dominates the wedge portion of bags, but having the familiar feel of the S400 with a bit more play at the bottom will get traction on tour quickly, especially in the 58- 64-degree neighborhood.

At 128 grams and a 37.5-inch raw point, the Spinner will fit right into the TT line up like its been there for 30 years. In a sense, it has, but now builders don’t have to steal 8-iron shafts to get it done.

Whether it be hitting approach shots into longer par 4’s and par 3’s, going after par 5’s in two, or just trying to hit more fairways off the tee — finding the best fairway wood of 2024 to fit your needs is a must as you fill your golf toolbox.

tour issue spinner shaft

These new fairway woods impress us with their ability to utilize new technology and construction methods to go faster, and further, while also offering never-before-seen levels of forgiveness. It’s now easier than ever to find the right one that matches your swing.

That being said, ultimately the best way to find the best fairway woods for you is to work with a professional fitter using a launch monitor. The difficult part is a lot of people don’t have easy access to fitters, launch monitors, and club builders — so at GolfWRX — with the help of our panel of expert fitters — we have done a lot of the work for you to narrow down your short list of fairway woods to demo.

Best fairway woods 2024: The categories

We have broken our 2024 best fairway wood list into two categories.

  • Best fairway wood for golfers seeking forgiveness
  • Best fairway wood for golfers seeking versatility

We selected this format for fairway woods in cooperation with fitters because every golfer prioritizes one of these two elements, regardless of age, handicap, or sex. And for many golfers, forgiveness is the number one factor when selecting a fairway wood.

Most versatile fairway woods of 2024

tour issue spinner shaft

Ping G430 Max

tour issue spinner shaft

Ping developed Carbonfly Wrap in a bid to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the face to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams, which are reallocated to achieve the lower CG and increase ball speed. The composite also plays a role in the pleasing sound, while a tungsten backweight extends the perimeter weighting to ensure forgiveness.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece .

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max

tour issue spinner shaft

Ai Smart Face — the centerpiece of Callaway’s Paradym Ai Smoke drivers — is also the key technology of new Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke fairway woods and hybrids. As with the drivers, the carbon chassis is lighter, allowing for 24 grams of weight to be redistributed throughout the head for enhanced launch, spin, and forgiveness. As utilized in Paradym, engineers leverage a tungsten speed cartridge to push CG low and forward.

Titleist TSR2

tour issue spinner shaft

TSR2 fairways feature the lowest CG in Titleist history for an all-steel construction designed to create speed and launch without excessive spin. New Open Hosel Construction created space for sizable improvements to key areas of performance by removing unwanted weight high and towards the heel.

TaylorMade Qi10 Tour

tour issue spinner shaft

The Qi10 Tour model uses a multi-material titanium-carbon construction and offers a more compact head shape, equipped with a moveable 50-gram weight in the sole for precise weight placement. By placing the sliding weight further back in the head, golfers can achieve a higher launch and more stability, whereas placing the weight further forward helps achieve a lower-spin and more penetrating ball flight.

Titleist TSR3

tour issue spinner shaft

Titleist’s adjustability-focused fairway wood is designed with a new, easy-to-adjust 5-position SureFit Adjustable CG Track System to fine-tune performance. It features the same Open Hosel Construction as TSR2 fairways. The TSR3’s CG has been positioned deeper, slightly lower, and closer to face center to provide easy, high launch with plenty of forgiveness.

For the full technology breakdown, check out our launch piece.

Most forgiving fairway woods of 2024

tour issue spinner shaft

TaylorMade Qi10 Max

tour issue spinner shaft

The Qi10 Max fairway wood heads use the company’s “Infinity Carbon Crown” that helped free up weight to be placed lower in the heads, helping achieve higher inertia and an enlarged face profile to boost ball speeds across their faces. Compared to the standard Qi10 model, the Qi10 Max has a larger front-to-back shape and shallower profile that’s designed for increased forgiveness and playability.

tour issue spinner shaft

Cobra Darkspeed Max

tour issue spinner shaft

Cobra’s draw-biased model is built for the player who needs forgiveness. Depending on the weight configuration, either greater forgiveness or more draw bias can be targeted. The draw-biased Max model is the most forgiving in the lineup. Here the weights are 12 and three grams and are situated in the rear and heel of the club to achieve the desired launch and ball flight.

Again, we can’t thank the fitters enough for their time, and we hope that in your search for your best fairway wood for 2024, we can help you find it!

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft

True Temper is one of the most recognizable names in golf.

The company is the epitome of prestige and has a rich history for innovation and tour-proven performance.

Of course, we’re referring to the Dynamic Gold series of iron shafts – perhaps the most popular iron shafts in the world.

But True Temper has never been a company that rests on its laurels. They are always looking to improve and help golfers of all skill-levels lower their score.

To that end, they offer the Dynamic Gold Spinner shaft.

This is lighter than your normal Dynamic Gold shaft and in the following review, we will tell you about its performance aspects and who should be gaming it.

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft Overview

First and foremost, you should know that this is a shaft designed specifically for wedges.

True Temper wanted to dial in performance around the pin and offer more golfers the opportunity to feel the Dynamic Gold signature smoothness and control.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner is advertised as being 5% lighter than the Dynamic Gold S400.

To be fair though, this isn’t saying much since the Dynamic Gold S400 is one of the heaviest shafts that True Temper produces.

Still, the Dynamic Gold Spinner does feel manageable in the hands. It still isn’t the lightest wedge shaft we ever tested but it is by no means uncontrollable.

As a wedge shaft, the Dynamic Gold Spinner is set to wedge flex. In terms of feel, wedge flex is essentially the equivalent of stiff flex.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner has a very weak kick that occurs just above the tip section.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner feels very stable – even when you are digging yourself out of a sand trap.

We would expect nothing less from a Dynamic Gold shaft. The transition is very smooth.

However, the Dynamic Gold Spinner does have a more responsive profile than most of the Dynamic Gold shafts we are used to. That’s by design though and is in no way a knock on this shaft.

It will allow more players to get the height and spin they need to hold on to fast greens.

Why is the Dynamic Gold Spinner So Popular?

When you have the words “Dynamic” and “Gold” in the name of your shaft, you’re going to get some attention.

In terms of feel, this is every bit a Dynamic Gold shaft. But it’s more viable for mid handicap players because it is lighter than other Dynamic Gold iron shafts.

More players have been able to benefit from Dynamic Gold accuracy thanks to this shaft.

How Does the Dynamic Gold Spinner Perform?

When compared to normal wedge shafts, the Dynamic Gold Spinner offers lower launch.

The launch isn’t straight up low; it just launches a bit lower than your average wedge shaft.

So short approaches are actually made a bit easier with your wedges as you will likely be able to hit the ball further.

That was the case for our testers anyway. Chipping in from distance was amazingly easy with this shaft.

It has a longer, looser tip section than standard Dynamic Gold shafts so in addition to distance, you get more spin as well. This was a very effective combo for our testing party.

We were able to lock onto more greens from distance. Spin rates were right where we like them for wedges: almost always in the 11,000 RPM range.

So the stopping power was phenomenal. No matter what type of green we were facing, we were able to land dead on it.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner plays smooth on pretty much any lie as well. Whether we were in the rough, semi rough or the bunker, we felt a very smooth transition and stable midsection.

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner is available in wedge flex which, again, is essentially stiff flex.

This is a good flex for anyone with an 85 – 90 MPH swing.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The Dynamic Gold Spinner is available as a 128g shaft.

128g is a good weight for players in the 85 – 95 MPH range.

Why is it So Good?

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft1

The general consensus among our testers was that the Dynamic Gold Spinner offered a near-perfect combination of spin and distance.

The Dynamic Gold Spinner will likely make it easier for average players to get closer to the pin.

Dynamic Gold Spinner First Impressions

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft2

Nearly all of us were amazed at how stable the Dynamic Gold Spinner felt even from the bunker.

The Dynamic Gold feel comes through 100% in this wedge shaft.

Key Features & Performance

The Dynamic Gold Spinner is able to achieve optimal wedge spin thanks to an elongated and softer tip section.

While dispersion may be sacrificed a bit, you get the spin you need around the pin from this shaft.

Dynamic Gold Spinner Wedge Review

We were able to pair the Dynamic Gold Spinner with a few different wedges ranging from player’s performance to game improvement.

We were really pleased to see that it remains consistent and stable whether you’re gaming a shovel or a butter knife.

Dynamic Gold Spinner Pros & Cons

  • Optimal wedge spin rates
  • Good distance
  • Smooth feel
  • Excellent consistency
  • Good for players with a moderate swing tempo
  • More viable for mid handicappers than most Dynamic Gold shafts
  • It’s affordable
  • Shot dispersion isn’t as tight as it could be

Dynamic Gold Spinner Shaft

Overall Score: 96/100

Who Should Buy it?

We think the Dynamic Gold Spinner would be ideal for mid handicappers.

It’s light enough to accommodate moderate swing speed players and it  is accurate enough to boost your confidence near the green.

If you are a mid handicapper who wants to be able to stick more greens on approaches, the Dynamic Gold Spinner is a must-try.

DG Spinner Shafts

What Is A DG Spinner Shaft?

Shafts are playing an ever-increasing role in the makeup of elite equipment. Since putting and wedge shots are your scoring shots, fitting a shaft that provides you with the best feel lifts your ability to the next level.

The DG Spinner shafts are uniquely designed spinner shafts for wedges to optimize the spin imparted on the golf ball on approach shots for optimal stopping power.

The section below the grip is designed using spinner technology to create a unique loading profile during the downswing , thus increasing spin and producing a lower launch angle.

True Temper’s Dynamic Gold Spinner wedge shaft was one of the first wedge-specific shafts on the market when the governing bodies introduced new rules restricting the grooves of wedges in 2010

This shaft features a small section of the shaft with a thinner diameter positioned near the grip of the club.

📢 Need To Know : Combining the thinner diameter with a longer tip section generates more speed at impact resulting in the spin rate increased by approximately 500 rpm.

DG Spinner Shaft Review

A DG Spinner wedge flex shaft is an optimized shaft that generally comes in two flexes:

  • Wedge flex for sand and lob wedges
  • Wedge+ flex for gap and pitching wedges

DG Spinner shafts offer a softer feel allowing you to utilize the additional flexibility to generate the extra spin.

Keeping the weight of your spinner shaft similar to that of your irons will ensure that you can execute shots with your wedges while retaining the feel of your irons.

The feel of the spinner shaft is determined by the swing weight at the bottom of your club .

📢 Need To Know : By swinging a wedge with different swing weights, you can determine which provides a better feel during the swing sequence.

A swing weight that is too heavy generates a feeling of the weight concentrated in the clubhead and could affect your ability to square the clubface on the downswing.

When the swing weight is too light you may not have sufficient feel of the clubhead and thus impact on your ability to control the swing path on the downswing.

DG spinner shaft weight is generally lighter than standard wedge shafts.

True Temper Dynamic Gold managed to reduce the weight of the Spinner by 5% compared to its leading Dynamic Gold S400

The lighter the shaft, the more control you can exercise over your wedge shot.

DG Spinner shafts are available in 131g and 124 g shafts.

This video on YouTube gives the basic information related to DG spinner shafts.

What Is The Weight At The End Of Your DG Spinner Shaft?

The swing weight should provide the correct feel during the swing and keep the weight of the wedge in line with your irons.

Most pitching wedge shots will be played as full shots therefore it requires a shaft with a thicker wall to make it heavier, firmer, and easier to control.

Higher lofted wedges are more frequently used to play partial and finesse chips and pitch shots. A shaft with a thinner wall makes it more responsive through impact to increase spin and produce a higher ball flight.

The DG Spinner shafts aim to impart more spin on the golf ball by adding speed at impact.

📋 Keep in mind : This has been proven to add between 500 rpm and 700 rpm in additional spin on approach shots making it easier to stop the golf ball or even produce backspin.

Benefits Of DG Spinner Shaft

DG Spinner shafts enable you to increase the angle of attack on your approach shots . Adding the increased flexibility in the lower end of a DG spinner shaft makes it possible to extract the most spin out of every shot.

Should You Keep Your DG Spinner Shaft In My Wedge?

Having a DG spinner shaft fitted to your scoring wedges will allow you to impart extra spin on holes where the flag is on the front edge to spin it back or stop it quickly. This will allow for more birdie putts and lower scores.

Final Thoughts

Having the ability to impart more spin on approach shots can help you in awkward pin positions by stopping the ball quickly or spin the ball back to the pin.

Professional golfers have been using Dynamic Gold Tour Issue spinner shafts for a long time and it could benefit your game as well.

Remember though, this is only part of your spin component. Using a high spin ball and good contact will make your experience complete.

Any feedback will be highly appreciated in the comments section below.

Does shaft flex matter in wedges?

Yes, shaft flex does matter in wedges. Just like in other clubs, certain golfers prefer stiffer or more flexible shafts to promote swing speed or forgiveness. Most wedges come with standard wedge flex steel shafts.

Are DG spinner shaft low kick (bend point) shafts?

Yes, Dynamic Gold Spinner Shafts offer a low trajectory ball flight that promotes a medium amount of spin. When combined with wedges, the DG Spinner Shafts can cause up to 700 rpms which maximize spin.

I have been playing the RTX4 wedges which have the DG S400 stock shafts.  I'm looking at picking up the newer Zipcore 46 and 50* wedges.  Those have a DG Spinner shaft.   My question is:  what is (are) the differences in those shafts?

From what I have read it is slightly more of an active feel to produce more spin and slightly higher launch. I believe it also weighs slightly less.

Thanks.  I've been reading on the True Temper site, but you never know just how accurate their marketing team is 😉

I really like the RTX4 wedges and just hope the zipcore version will have the same feel and launch characteristics.

A little history: This appears to be "phase 3" of Spinner Wedge shafts.

During the early 2000s, a company called Royal Precision developed the Project X and Rifle shafts. The Rifle family had a Rifle Spinner wedge shaft. When RP went out of business, RP shaft engineer Kim Braly went to FST and started the KBS line of golf shafts.

True Temper bought the RP patents, and soon developed the DG Spinner Wedge flex shaft. The GolfWorks components catalog first carried it in 2011, up through 2017. Here is the traditional DG Spinner info:

image.png.42f6da3523f258a92dbc38d7ba090a65.png

DG Spinner featured a Wedge flex at 124 grams for PW and GW, and a Wedge+ flex at 131 grams for SW and LW.

These DG Spinners were available as component shafts and also as upcharge shafts for many club manufacturers. This jointed shaft had an unusual feel, some liked it while others didn't.

-----------------------------------------

Note: The Cleveland wedge TRAction (Tour Reflex Action) shaft had a similar flex dynamic to the above DG Spinner, but without the kinked joint. TRAction shafts were stock in several cycles of CG wedges, including the CG14 circa 2009.

------------------------------------------

This latest spinner appears to be the Dynamic Golf Spinner WEDGE Tour Issue. According to TT site, this latest DG Spinner weighs slightly less and has a livelier tip than the DG S400. Also, this latest Spinner version does not appear to have the mid-shaft joint section.

Hint: Get fitted. Make sure you get a shaft that you like, and works for you.

Spot on analysis of the new Spinner and this is why for the past 15 years I've used 8-iron S400's until I recently went to graphite.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

If you're referring to the DG Tour Issue Spinner shaft, it was made to replicate and replace the soft-stepped DG Tour Issue 8i shaft that many tour players put in wedges.  They want the same weight as their irons only more tip action which 8i has.  The problem may be it's noticeably lighter at 128gram compared to DG 132 or 130g Tour Issue 8i shaft.

So essentially, almost the same as s200 shafts that used to be stock shaft in most wedges.  except this has a fancy name, lol.

I current game the RTX4 in S400 also.  I have a set of Zipcore wedges arriving on Friday with the "spinner" shaft.  Hoping the Zipcores have a similar feel, if not the same as the RTX4.

Based on the quality information above, I'm sure I'll see/feel a difference, but hopefully for the better!  I'll let you know how they compare for me at the range.  Worst case scenario is I re-shaft the Zipcores with my RTX4 shafts.

Took out the Zipcores with the stock DG Spinner shafts to the range the other day.  I also brought out my RTX4 wedges (DG TI S400).  Both sets are the same loft and grinds, so no real difference in the heads, other than the zipcore technology.

Did not see much difference in distance or flight.  But the feel of the DG Spinners were not for me.  Mostly, the fact it was noticeably lighter and just didn't "feel" right.  I was able to hit all my shots with the RTX4, but zipcores were very inconsistent for me.

I think the weight really played mind games with my shots.  Also, didn't like the lighter feel on pitches and chips.  Gonna re-shaft then with DG TI S400 and compare them again.

I now have several rounds with my new Zipcores (46* and 50*).  I really like them.  They feel smooth and solid, with good compression on the ball.  When I try to jump on one and my sequencing gets off, the feel is poor.  So, for *me* I'm keeping them in my bag 🙂  and making controlled swings to keep consistency.

Older thread, but I just got a set of zipcores recently and 100% I didn't like the spinner in PW and GW, so I swapped them for x1 SS, but I'm on the fence about swapping them in SW/LW.

Ideally, I want max spin around the greens (using the tiger ball for that reason), but I'm having issues with the spinners feeling vague and launching too high.

I was thinking of switching to S400, but I've never used one. I've only ever used $ taper 130 in SW/LW, and s200 in LW. Both of which I've had good results with, but it feels like I'm missing something with both options. Should I go for the s4's?

has anyone tried tipping the Dynamic gold spinner shaft 1/2" maybe?

Then you get close to a #9 instead of a #8, so just use the #9 then since it has more weight NET cut, and due to shaft walls is stiffer. I can see thats there is some confusion about what a "spinner" shaft is, and we can only judge it as a spinner if its STRONGER and deliver LESS dynamic loft than what we play in irons. A DG S300 player who uses X100 #8 for wedge, has "spinner wedge" shafts. A DG X100 player who uses X100 #8 for wedge, DONT.... Keep that in mind when you judge this, ONLY if its stiffer and deliver less dynamic loft than your iron shafts, it will deliver MORE spin in wedge, but if its softer than your irons, launch goes up, but spin goes DOWN. So, they might have launched a X100 #8 as "spinner", but the X100 iron player will get more spin by using a std DGX 100 #9, and even more if he "Tiger step" a #9 iron shaft, (tip trim it 3/8-4/8) to get close to the PW shaft TT dont offer anymore)

Yeah the original spinners were an acquired taste and people seemed to love them or hate them with little in between.  I fell into the latter category.  However the newer iteration described here sounds like it might be designed to bridge that gap.

Here is the traditional DG Spinner info:     DG Spinner featured a Wedge flex at 124 grams for PW and GW, and a Wedge+ flex at 131 grams for SW and LW.   These DG Spinners were available as component shafts and also as upcharge shafts for many club manufacturers. This jointed shaft had an unusual feel, some liked it while others didn't. ----------------------------------------- Note: The Cleveland wedge TRAction (Tour Reflex Action) shaft had a similar flex dynamic to the above DG Spinner, but without the kinked joint. TRAction shafts were stock in several cycles of CG wedges, including the CG14 circa 2009. ------------------------------------------   This latest spinner appears to be the Dynamic Golf Spinner WEDGE Tour Issue. According to TT site, this latest DG Spinner weighs slightly less and has a livelier tip than the DG S400. Also, this latest Spinner version does not appear to have the mid-shaft joint section.   Details:  https://www.truetemper.com/products/dynamic-gold-spinner/   Hint: Get fitted. Make sure you get a shaft that you like, and works for you.

Seems to be a soft stepped s200 shaft.first step 1/2 inch further from hozel than normal

Fancy label too

Nope its a X100 #8 iron shaft. DG X100 = 130 grams / 37 = 3.51 grams per inch Using the #8 is SS1, so we loose half the weight of 1 inch (3.51 / 2)  = 1.75 grams 130 minus 1.75 = 128.25 or 128 grams Tip section should be 6.5" long (standard X100 #8)

thanks for the insightful info howard

now im just full on confused

i play s300 shaft

i use the rtx full face and getting higher launch lower spin with wedge

switch to my S400, i get lower launch higher spin

if i read correctly, if the dg spinner is x100 i should be getting lower launch higher spin correct?

For short YES.... Spin progression stops and goes the other way at some point. Trackman say its at a spin loft of 45 (Dynamic loft + AOA), but it seems to be a tad higher, but that means when we are up at the GW above 50 loft, launch still goes higher, but spin goes down. What the spinner shafts actually does is reducing dynamic loft, and by that "spin loft", and back against where spin is at peak, but that also means launch goes down. "The book" say that wedge shafts is so short, they cant bend much anyway, but thats not really true, and may players experience more differences to launch and spin in wedges depending on shaft than they do when they try different iron shafts, and the short game is the most important, so find the shaft that works the best for you, dont just play "what ever" because so many say it does not matter, because it does. Start by weight, then feel, then judge ball flight and stopping power. ive been advocating "the #8 iron spinner trick" since i became a member of this forum about 11 years ago, and this link is to one of the largest tread about that subject, so take a peak in a read to get a better understanding.

Are you talking screen code on the butt? What TIP length? If this is a S200 #8 iron shaft, its NOT going to deliver more spin, simply forget it. @Adam C , AKA the mobile club maker is about to make a new video with a "side by side" test using DG S400 #9 vs DG X100 #8, and he did some testing yesterday, but its up to him to tell about the preliminary findings, but its all inspired of what ive been writhing about here on WRX for 12 years now, and the numbers he posted in a PM to me will blow your mind, the difference is HUGE.

The label on the shaft clearly said s200 spinner.

Was at local golf store.i did comparr the tip.to the dynamic gold shafts in other wedges and it was 1/2 longer tip

OK i believe you, but it WANT deliver more spin than a S200 #9, the typical "Wedge flex".... Spin has a curve vs spin loft, and when it turns, spin goes down. For IRONS we can "soft step" to gain launch and spin. For Wedges its opposite, we have to "hard step" (go stronger) to gain spin. I have no clue about what TT is thinking when they label that shaft as a "spinner", but i noticed that they are now selling Project X #2 iron shafts as if they was designed as a descending weight shaft, so i cant help thinking that they have a inventory dusting they try to push out the door this way.

So why does manufacturer still uses s200 and label it as wedge flex?

Is it to gain better feel by sacrificing a lil bit of spin?

10 minutes ago, pgoi said: So why does manufacturer still uses s200 and label it as wedge flex? Is it to gain better feel by sacrificing a lil bit of spin?

NO, Dynamic Gold S flex has a profile that works really good for a majority of players for wedge, and "Wedge flex" is the #9 iron shaft, and could be both S200. S300 or S400 depending on OEM and what wedge that was used for. About 10 years ago, you could but a Titleist Vokey, and if it was a GW, it was S200, and if it was a SW, it was S300, and if it was the LW, it was S400, all of them with the label "Wedge flex". Today there is a trend among amateur players against LIGHTER shafts than the original Dynamic Gold, and thats why the Dynamic Gold line up is expanded to 120 and 105 grams, plus a wedge option of 115 grams so they better match the players irons than the OG Dynamic Gold as wedge often does. DG is simply a very good profile for Wedge, and the most winning iron and wedge shaft in the history of Golf, but Dynamic has been made since 1942 and is also the shaft with the longest lifespan in production no matter factory, simply because it works good for so many players.
