Why coach travel is the smart option to take in 2023

by Jason Brasier | 18 Apr 2023

FUN AND FLEXIBLE

Environmentally low impact.

Not is coach travel incredibly flexible, but it also creates less pollution per passenger per kilometer than any other form of transport – 85% less than car and air, and nearly 40% less than rail. This rings especially true for Insight Vacations’ Euro Emissions 6 registered coach fleet, one of the most efficient in Europe. This rating means it creates up to 97% less particulate emissions and 95% less nitrogen oxide emissions than vehicles that meet previous Euro Emissions standards.

This is just one of the ways we MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® and show our dedication to reducing our emissions. One of the strongest travel trends in 2023 is a shift towards conscious, sustainable travel, which means choosing coach travel one of the best ways to make a difference to your travel footprint.

ic coach travel

ICT Coaches Ltd. are one of Norfolk’s newest coach companies but with over forty-five years combined knowledge and experience in the industry.

Background:

Following the success and growth of local day trip and excursion company IC Travel, sister company ICT Coaches Ltd was formed in January 2019 with 4 brand new vehicles making up the fleet.

IC Travel Managing Director Ian Colman MBE, along with Alison Fenton and Simon Spencer are co-directors of the company and are delighted with the rapid progress seen since the company started.  From your initial enquiry to the day of your travel, our team will provide a fast response and excellent service. Quality and reliability are important to us all and our vehicles are maintained to high levels of industry standards. Our competitive remuneration package for our drivers means we can attract and select those we consider best to deliver our company ethos.

Enviromental:

Environmental impact is important to us all. The  2019 environmental regulations  which came into force in London and other cities and towns had an impact on all coach operators. ICT Coaches decided that the best option was to invest in new ‘Euro 6’ executive Coaches, the current fleet comprising of 16, 34 and 53-seater executive coaches. An additional new 53-seater coach will join the fleet in June 2024.

An 8-seater Executive Ford Tourneo, 3-seater Executive Mercedes Saloon and 4-seater Skoda Octavia and Superb saloon cars (operated by our sister company,  IC Premier Travel ) are also available for hire. IC Premier Travel are one of the main providers of transport to Norwich City Football Club first team and management.

All of our vehicles are able to operate within Ultra Low Emission Zones without extra charge. This includes the extended Ultra Low Emission Zone in London from August 2023.

Our vehicles  are used to provide the transport for  IC Travel  but are also available for private hire to groups, schools, businesses and clubs for both UK and European excursions. The two companies are able to provide a wide range of travel options from a 3-seater Private Hire vehicle for Airport transfers expanding to over 150 passengers across the fleet.  The company is a member of the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) emphasising the professional approach to business.

Safety of our Customers:

The company is a member of the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) emphasising the professional approach to business. Vehicle and customer safety is paramount and all our vehicles are maintained and inspected to the highest standards including safety inspections every 6 weeks for the coaches with main dealers and local engineering firms.

All coach companies are subject to OCRS rating. The Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) system is based on data collected by DVSA over a 3-year rolling period and data is taken from annual tests, roadside inspections and inspections at operators’ premises for the following:

We are pleased to advise that ICT Coaches Ltd.  has always been measured as Green – lowest risk.

Customer Service:

Understanding the needs of groups is key to our success and the team works closely with customers to ensure the entire process from booking to travelling is as easy and flexible as possible.  When you contact us one of the team will be pleased to help you at every stage of the process.  We try and be as flexible as possible with office hours and often we will be talking to customers during the evening or at weekends to help with their planning.

Our feedback from customers is second to none and a selection of comments can be seen on our ‘ Testimonials ’ page on this website.  We may not always be the cheapest option but we can guarantee the best possible service with the newest clean modern coaches and top class drivers.

Both ICT Coaches Ltd and IC Travel were finalists in the national 2020 Coach Tourism awards – with the finals taking place in 2021.

Travel Passes

Swiss travel pass, saver day pass, power socket.

The power sockets on this train are compatible with standard E.U. two point plugs.

Trolley Service:

A catering trolley with hot and cold drinks and snacks should be taken through the train at some point during its journey.

In Switzerland IC (Intercity) is a train service and not a specific type of train.

Four types of train are now used by Swiss national rail operator SBB on its IC routes and services:

(1) Double deck IC 2000 trains - these are the older double deck trains which are now being modernised .

(2) New double deck LD/Twindexx trains , which are gradually replacing the IC 2000 trains on some routes .

(3 Tilting single deck ICN trains.

(4) Single deck trains which use IV coaches .

The exterior of the older IC 2000 coaches used on some SBB IC departures

All of the routes taken by these double-deck trains have incredible scenic highlights, so an obvious advantage of being on the upper deck are the better opportunities to make the most of the views.

However, there are less obvious advantages of heading to the upper deck:

  • it is easier to move through the train at the upper deck to seek out spare seats
  • the restaurant on the double deck trains is at the upper level.

The lower deck can feel more spacious as there’s more headroom; and if you have heavy luggage it obviously saves you the effort of heaving it upstairs. There are luggage racks in the lower and upper deck seating saloons.

The toilets are also located on both decks.

On these trains all the power sockets, (which are only available in 1st class on the yet to be modernised trains, but can now be found in both classes on the refurbished trains) are only compatible with Swiss 3 pin plugs.

Whether these trains have or haven't been refurbished they have dedicated spaces for cycles, prams and wheelchairs.

These IC 2000 double decks were the most common type of train used for Swiss IC services, they have been replaced by the Twindexx trains on some services, but they still operate on these routes:

IC 3: Basel - Zurich - Landquart - Chur (a few departures)

IC 6: Basel - Olten - Bern - Thun - Spiez - Visp - Brig (some departures)

IC 8: Romanshorn - Winterthur - Zurich Flughafen - Zurich HB - Bern - Thun - Spiez - Visp - Brig (all departures)

IC 61: Basel - Olten - Bern - Thun - Spiez - Interlaken West - Interlaken Ost (a few departures)

In First Class only, Quiet zones and Businnes zones; on the refurbished trains some Business Zone seats are at desks.

The trains which are yet to be refurbished can also appear to be a tad worn, they are arguably inferior to the externally similar, but newer, double-deck RE commuter trains that can now be found in some Swiss cities. However, the modernised trains look very smart indeed! And it looks as though the majority of the coaches have now been modernized!

Upper deck 2nd class seating saloon on a SBB LD/Twindexx train

Like the older IC 2000 trains, if you travel on the upper deck:

  • the restaurant is at the upper level.

These new LD/Twindexx trains are gradually being introduced on these routes:

IC 1: St Gallen - Winterthur - Zurich Flughafen - Zurich HB - Bern - Fribourg - Lausanne - Geneve - Geneve Aeroport (now virtually all departures)

IC 3 : Basel - Zurich HB - Landquart - Chur (now virtually all departures)

IC 21 : Basel - Luzern - Bellinzona - Lugano (a few departures)

In comparison to the older double-decked Swiss IC 2000 trains, these new LD (Twindexx) trains have:

(1) Electronic info screens on board, which gives details of the route and list the details of the connecting departures available at the next station, which the train will be calling at. (2) Power sockets available in 2nd class, as well as 1st class (3) More wheelchair accessible compartments and toilets (4) Toilets which have baby changing facilities (5) A dedicated family car (6) More space for prams/pushchairs/strollers (7) More bike racks

As these trains represent a significant step-forward from the older IC 2000 trains, there is a dedicated guide to travelling by these trains; see below.

The smart exterior of these new Twindexx trains

These trains operate on these routes:

IC 2: Zurich - Zug - Arth Goldau - Bellinzona - Lugano (a few departures)

IC 5: Rorsach - St Gallen - Winterthur - Zurich Flughafen - Zurich HB - Olten - Biel/Bienne - Neuchatel - Geneve - Geneve Aeroport (all departures) and Zurich HB - Olten - Biel/Bienne - Neuchatel - Lausanne (all departures)

IC 21: Basel - Luzern - Arth Goldau - Bellinzona - Lugano (a few departures)

IC 51: Basel - Delémont - Moutiers - Biel/Bienne (all departures) (connect in Biel for Geneve and Lausanne)

These single-deck tilting trains are quite different to the SBB trains used for other IC services. They used to be specifically designated as ICN services on timetables; hence the specific guide to using these trains, which you can find below.

ic coach travel

These single deck trains with the IV coaches are more common on these routes

IC 3: Basel - Zurich HB - Landquart - Chur (a few departures)

IC 61: Basel - Olten - Bern - Thun - Spiez - Interlaken West - Interlaken Ost (most departures)

These IV coaches are also used on the longer IR routes in Switzerland.

The single deck trains/coaches are spacious, airy and comparatively comfortable; a big plus for scenic journeys is that the majority of the seats line up with the large windows on the single deck trains (all do in 1st class). However, the single deck IC trains have no wheelchair access, though they do have bike racks, look for the symbol on the exterior of a coach; normally located in the first or last coach.

Some of the single deck coaches have Swiss 3-pin AND standard E.U. sockets.

Common features of all Swiss IC services:

What all of SBB's IC services share are:

  • the provision of restaurant cars
  • a trolley service of drinks/snacks
  • a bistro/bar service
  • a lack of Wi-fi provision*
  • 'Quiet Zones' in which calls cannot be made in mobile phones; look for the signs on the widows which feature phone with a line through it. Don't make a call before checking that you are NOT in a Quiet Zone.

*Swiss national rail operator SBB does not provide wi-fi on its trains in the conventional sense, meaning that passengers can't log on to a SBB portal for wi-fi. Instead SBB has equipped some of the coaches on the IC trains with signal amplifiers, to enable enhanced connectivity with local mobile networks. The coaches/cars equipped with this equipment have symbols by the doors; and SBB suggests that passengers who wish to access wi-fi during a journey, should travel in these coaches in order to access these 'hotspots'.

Seat reservations are optional on Swiss IC trains but a big plus of the double deck trains is that they have a lot of seats, so making a reservation isn't essential. Though if you're going to be travelling in 2nd class for more than an hour, during business hours, reservations can give peace of mind.

You can book reservations online, AFTER you have booked a ticket, by using the SBB (Swiss national railways) seat reservation service OR request a reservation when booking at a station ticket office.

If you haven’t reserved check the info screens on the platform which shows which zones the train will occupy when it arrives at a station. Head for the zones furthest away from the entrance to the gleis (platform/track), fewer people will have headed to the far ends of each train, so you should increase your chances of finding a seat.

The restaurant on a single deck IV train

All Swiss IC trains have restaurant cars and they're popular at meal times, as prices aren't exponentially more expensive compared to standard restaurants.

If you want to have a meal head direct to the restaurant car when boarding and spend your journey in the car; it doesn't matter whether you have a 1st or 2nd class ticket.

A new innovation is that between 07:00 and 18:30 on some routes the full restaurant menu is available at your seat when travelling First Class; thereby avoiding the need to have to head to the restaurant car to have a meal. The routes when this service is available are: Between Zurich and Bern on route IC1 (Zurich - Geneve) Between Zurich and Brig on route IC 8 and in certain parts of the train on IC route 5; St Gallen - Winterthur - Zurich Flughafen - Zurich HB - Olten - Biel/Bienne - Neuchatel - Lausanne and Zurich HB - Olten - Biel/Bienne - Neuchatel - Geneve - Geneve Aeroport

On single deck IC trains and on the upper deck for the double deck trains, an at seat trolley catering of snacks and hot/cold drinks is USUALLY provided. It is not complimentary in 1st class.

ic coach travel

All of these trains used for IC services are fitted with bike storage spaces, which are indicated on the outsides of the train Though as these trains can be up to 12 coaches long, being at the station early to work out where to wait for easy boarding is recommended.

On the SBB trains a day bike pass costs CH 14 and they can be booked online here . The only other bike ticket available is a short-distance single journey ticket, which costs half the Adult fare.

IC Bus introduces electric school bus in 2-week tour

IC Bus introduced its production model CE Series Electric bus to school districts and IC Bus dealerships across California during a two-week, eight stop tour that began in early November.

Joining the tour was In-Charge Energy, a leading energy and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure solutions company and partner of Navistar, as well as experts from NEXT, Navistar’s eMobility business unit. By taking the electric bus on the road, IC Bus is showing firsthand how its product, as well as its end-to-end turnkey solution, works for customers looking to make the switch to electric.

ic coach travel

“When talking about electric buses, it’s important to understand it goes well beyond just the vehicle, you need a true partner for the entire electrification process,” said Trish Reed, vice president and general manager of IC Bus, in a press release. “Together with our internal NEXT team, as well as our partners, IC Bus is positioned to offer everything our customers need for a safe, seamless transition to electric.”

The IC Bus CE Series Electric is the first and only electric school bus in the industry to offer three regenerative braking modes to ensure optimum performance of the school bus and maximize available battery range of more than 200 miles with the largest battery configuration installed, according to the company.

The CE Series Electric offers industry-leading range and districts will be able to outfit their electric vehicle with one, two, or three battery packs depending on their application needs, which offer approximate ranges of 70, 135, or 200-plus miles per charge. IC Bus says it’s the only OEM to offer up to three batteries on an electric school bus.

The CE Series electric is designed to give customers a zero-emissions vehicle that will offer AC and DC charging as standard. This in turn gives users the flexibility of using efficient level 2 charging or a DC fast charge. The vehicle-to-grid charging capacity is also standard, which makes it possible for districts to sell electric power back to their local utility companies if their operations create surplus energy.

The Cheapest and Fastest Travel from Munich to Zurich (Not What You’d Expect!)

  • Post author: Rachel Means
  • Post last modified: 2023-10-25

Cheap and fast transportation from Munich to Zurich doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality. Budget travelers are pros at finding dirt cheap travel deals to stretch budgets further and extend that trip just a little longer.

Trouble is, you often get what you pay for with budget options. But in this case, we were pleasantly surprised! The cheapest option wasn’t awful, and it turned out to be the fastest as well!

Table of Contents

The Cheapest & Fastest Way to Travel from Munich to Zurich

It’ll put a serious damper on your trip when that budget flight is canceled. Or even worse, the flight is delayed several hours and you’ll miss your connection, but since it’s not canceled you can’t get a refund.

The trick is finding the right balance between reliability, comfort, and cost.

For travel between Munich and Zurich, we were just as surprised as you to discover that travel by Deutsche Bahn (DB) IC bus was the most cost-effective and reliable option.

Let me just start by saying: Bus travel is never in my top 3 ways to travel . Flights, trains, and rental cars are my preferred modes of travel, in that order, for international trips.

But I did the research and when it came to reliability, comfort, and cost, the DB IC Bus from Munich to Zurich won by a landslide.

(No, this is not a sponsored post. I did my own research, and this is just true.)

ic coach travel

Let’s back up for a minute: why Munich to Zurich?

Part of my epic 12 day Austria-Germany-Switzerland-Liechtenstein trip in 2019 involved traveling from Munich, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland.

Looking at a basic street map those two cities don’t seem very far apart. But turn on satellite view map and you’ll notice there are more than a few mountains between them.

Mountain view of green forested mountains, blue sky with white clouds, and blue Lake Lucerne in the valley

The original plan for this trip was just southern Germany. But as often happens, with Americans in particular, we notice how close everything is to each other in Europe and we want to see everything at once .

*raises hand*

So my trip expanded to include Salzburg, Austria and Zurich, Switzerland.

And if you’re already gonna be in northern Switzerland, you can’t miss Liechtenstein .

Thus, the epic 4 country itinerary was born and my bucket list was happy!

The logical itinerary was either Salzburg-Munich-Zurich or Zurich-Munich-Salzburg. International flights made that decision for me: flights back to the US are cheaper and have more times available from Zurich than from Salzburg.

Munich Rathaus

My main base was Munich, Germany. I had day trip options galore from Munich and didn’t want the hassle of changing hotels every few days. Changing hotels really cuts into your sightseeing time. Not a fan.

I flew into Munich from the US, immediately took the train to Salzburg, and explored Mozart’s hometown for a couple of days before backtracking to Munich. Once I was done with my Munich adventures and day trips, I was ready for Switzerland.

How to Get to Zurich from Munich

During the research phase of trip planning, I looked at my top 3 ways to travel. All the standard transportation options were considered:

  • fly Munich to Zurich
  • trains from Munich to Zurich
  • rent a car and drive from Munich to Zurich
  • instead of day tripping to Fussen, spend the night in Fussen and then carry on via trains to Zurich

Flights were expensive and time-consuming compared to other options and not worth the time and energy of getting through airport security.

I favored a train because it’s typically cheaper and can be faster than the hassle of airports.

But those mountains. They don’t make straight path travel very easy.

Turns out, there are no direct train routes from Munich to Zurich . Not even somewhat direct, where you stop in one city slightly out of the way and change trains for your final destination.

Basically every train from Munich to Zurich is via Frankfurt (not even Stuttgart!), which adds several hours to your journey. Fussen to Zurich was even worse because Fussen is a smaller town and gets fewer trains per day.

white and red DB ice train in germany

Alright, not ideal, but let’s take a night train from Munich and sleep on the train.

Couldn’t find a route with no train changes. That’s the last thing I wanted: dragging all my luggage through an unfamiliar train station at 3AM, so I can arrive in Zurich at 9AM exhausted and waste half a day at my hotel, power napping.

Did I already mention how I hate wasting precious sightseeing time?

Fine, let’s try the rental car option. I knew there’d be a fee for point to point travel and not returning the car to its origin city.

But driving internationally and dropping it off in another country is a whole different problem.

Talk about a hefty fee!

I never thought renting a car for a single day could be so expensive! I couldn’t find anything cheaper than $200 for what is essentially 4 hours of rental time. Unbelievable.

Other Options

So now I’m desperately searching for other transportation options, because I’ve gotten all excited about Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and I stumbled upon the DB IC Bus routes.

They could get us from Munich to Zurich in 4 hours for just $26 per person !

I know what you’re thinking. My initial reaction was also one of disbelief and trying to find the catch . Bus travel is almost never comfortable.

DB IC bus

Not your average long-haul bus company

I typically dismiss long route bus travel right away. I’m 5’-3” and my husband is 6’-2”. It’s not comfortable for either of us.

On this trip we also had our 6’-5” friend from college joining us, and while we are sometimes willing to sacrifice comfort for a good price, we’re not gonna force others to be uncomfortable.

Hear me out though : the Deutsche Bahn IC bus routes are managed by the same national transport company that runs the trains in Germany.

DB buses are reliable, comfortable, and cost-effective. These are not Flix buses .

I appreciate what Flix buses can do for the young and broke in Europe who want to travel, but their reliability is not good enough for me.

I’m a planner with timetables, and I just don’t accept the constant uncertainty of the Flix bus schedules. Sure, some are on time, but reviews seem like it’s hit or miss. If you’re more flexible than me, Flix buses can be a budget saver!

The DB buses had none of those unreliable reviews. I read review after review of the DB buses, and the only negative reviews I found seemed to be unprepared people rather than the company’s fault.

At $26 per person , I couldn’t find another reliable alternative to beat the price, and the DB IC buses offer the same comfort level as a train. Reliability, comfort, and cost: I was sold.

Switzerland, here I come!

Where to catch the DB IC bus

Munich has a main bus station, just like it has a main train station. No matter the bus company, the ZOB (short for Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof in German) is most likely your rendezvous point for catching the long-haul bus.

central bus station ZOB in munich

If you’ve been in Munich for a few days, you’ve likely mastered the S-bahn and U-bahn local train system. The ZOB is one stop west of the central train station, the Hauptbahnhof.

Exit at Hackerbrücke and walk over to the ZOB. You won’t be the only one. Follow the trail of others with suitcases heading for the modern steel and glass building north of the tracks.

The ZOB has some food and shopping options and a brightly lit indoor waiting area. Check the board for your terminal number. The board will update once your bus has arrived and is ready for loading.

Pro Tip : Purchase tickets online prior to travel. A handful of companies have ticket offices at the ZOB but most do not. Deutsche Bahn has ticket offices at the central train station, but not at the ZOB.

My DB IC bus arrived on time, and I had zero problems with check-in. Make sure the name on your photo ID matches the name on your ticket , and you won’t have any problems either.

The Bus Experience: Was it Comfortable?

Honestly, no issues and no complaints.

The seats are comfortably cushioned, well-maintained, clean, and adjustable. Aisle seats can partially slide into the aisle to give you a little more separation from your neighbor by the window.

My tall (over 6’-0”) traveling companions fit snugly, but they fit and were sufficiently comfortable for the trip. Not as squished as an airplane by any means, but also not as roomy as a personal car might be.

Electrical outlets at every seat pair, tray tables at every seat, and a bathroom in back are all nice perks for a 4 hour road trip. Not to mention you can sit back and relax instead of driving.

green Swiss field with brown building

What about the ride?

I’m continually amazed by bus drivers’ abilities to maneuver these whale-like vehicles around tight corners in urban streets. No issues getting out of town and on the freeway. Smooth ride the whole way.

I loved the scenery, watching the German and Swiss countryside pass by as I sipped my drink and wrote in my travel journal. For 5’-3” me, it was just as comfortable as if I’d been on a train.

The journey was direct and did not have any scheduled stops in other towns along the route. The bus stopped briefly at the Swiss border, and they checked our passports but didn’t stamp them.

Arrival in Zurich

The DB IC bus arrived in Zurich on time and dropped off right next door to Zurich’s main train station.

Only regret: because we were one of the first to board, we were one of the last to get our luggage in Zurich. We weren’t in a rush so not a big deal, but something to consider for next trip!

Zurich skyline

So that’s my tale of taking the bus from Munich to Zurich! Not a tale of woe and misery, but rather a tale of speedy, hassle-free international transportation .

Thanks, DB, for having that route! It was a game changer and allowed me to keep my epic 4 countries in 10 days Europe itinerary!

Hi, Thanks for the awesome article. Possible to share some insights on how I can get to Munich from Zurich? My arrival and departure is via Munich, thus would like to know if it’s feasible to take the coach back to Munich. Hope you can advise 🙂

Yes, you can take the same route back to Munich! It’s not a good day trip option, as you won’t have much time in Zurich between rides. But it’d work just fine if you wanted to spend a few days in Switzerland and then take the bus back to Munich to then fly home.

Hi! Thanks for this article it was really useful! My husband and I are travelling to Europe from Singapore for the first time this Nov. Does this bus trip work the other way round, from Zurich to Munich? As we’re starting in Switzerland and flying back home from Munich!

Cheap IC Buses of German Railways

The IC Bus is a long-distance, intercity coach service operated by German Railways (Deutsche Bahn). It provides cheap transportation on routes not well covered by railways. German Railways rules and savings are usually applied, which mean cheap deals for families.

IC Buses

NOTE: All IC Bus routes of Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) were canceled at the end of 2020 with  Flixbus  often offering the best alternatives. Otherwise, regular trains also cover the routes but railway journeys are often slower and with multiple transfers.

Cheap, luxury intercity IC buses run by German Railways / Deutsche Bahn offer transportation on routes in (and out of) Germany not well covered by trains. The IC Bus is usually in comfortable double-decker buses with free wifi and ample legroom. All German Railways discounts apply including Bahn Card savings and children under 15 traveling for free with parents.

Tickets for the IC Bus is available from any outlet selling German Railways (DB) tickets including online, ticket vending machines at station and (more expensive) from ticket windows or travel agents. The IC bus is listed with regular train services on the Deutsche Bahn website timetables and may be combined with other train or bus tickets sold by German Railways. Special savings fares are often available at prices far lower than usual on Deutsche Bahn trains.

Long-Distance IC Bus of Deutsche Bahn

Since 2013, long-distance buses are allowed to compete with the trains on journeys over 50 km in Germany. To the shock of German Railways, and many politicians, Germans have taken to the very cheap intercity buses in droves – the journeys may be longer and less comfortable but bus travel is cheap.

Deutsche Bahn has joined the long-distance bus action with its own IC Bus on especially routes not well served by direct trains both inside Germany, as well as to neighboring countries.

The IC Bus is usually a double-decker bus but on some routes other operators are using their own buses in cooperation with DB. All buses are air-conditioned, have ample legroom, free wifi, free standard luggage, toilets, and a small snack bar. Almost all buses have electric outlets – carry a double adaptor as it is never one plug per seat. By using almost always its own buses, the IC Bus like the can guarantee a consistency of service often lacking in brands using buses from a variety of service providers.

The double-decker IC buses can accommodate wheelchair users in their own wheelchairs.

On all IC Bus lines, all standard German Railways discounts may be applied, e.g. the popular Bahn Card savings. The IC bus is considered a long-distance service so specials aimed at regional and local transportation are not valid on the bus.

Seat reservations are obligatory for travel on IC buses but included in the quoted fares. Rail pass holders ( Eurail , German Rail Pass, etc.) must make separate reservations.

Families Save on the IC Bus of German Railways

Families with children can save on IC buses with the standard German Railways policy of children under 15 years old traveling for free with parents – adding the names at time of booking is essential.

IC Bus Inter-City Long-Distance Routes

IC Bus Routes 2018

  • Düsseldorf to Liège / Luik / Lüttich in Belgium via Maastricht in The Netherlands
  • Prague  to Mannheim via Heidelberg and Nürnberg (Nuremberg).
  • Munich (München) to Prague in the Czech Republic via Regensburg.

Long Distance Bus Companies in Germany

The largest long-distance bus operator in Germany is currently  Flixbus , which absorbed several competitors including Mein Fernbus and the German Postbus. All continental European Megabus routes are also bookable through Flixbus .

Berlin Linien Bus (also part of Deutsche Bahn) stopped services end October 2016. A few smaller bus services still remain but usually serve only a few routes and are often limited to specific regions.

The most intensive transportation in Russia is high-density traffic between St. Petersburg and Moscow . Two Russian capitals are tied by several means of transport, and each of them is preferred by different people, having different reasons for that. Each type of transportation, by car, by train and by plane has its advantages and disadvantages, tied with the price and time you spend traveling.

First of all, the Russian capitals are tied with the M10 highway, which begins in the traffic jam on the Leningradsky Avenue and goes through St. Petersburg farther to Vyborg and to the frontier with Finland as M10 Scandinavia. The distance between St. Petersburg and Moscow amounts to 664 km. The M10 highway has the drives to the cities of Novgorod and Tver . Going down the highway, you pass them by, and the journey takes you about 8 hours. The main advantage of the journey by car is that you dispose your time without depending on any schedules. The main disadvantage is that the road is rather difficult. The first problem is traffic jams in Moscow; the second one is unimproved road, now under reconstruction, in the Novgorod Region . Third one is tracks, especially on the pieces of the road reducing. The last, but very important problem is rather wild style of driving in Russia, being practiced by all the road users, including the track drivers. The price of such journey depends on the model of the car, you will drive.

Rent a car in Moscow

2. By train

This way to get from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back is the oldest and the most popular ones. Moreover, the railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow is the oldest one in Russia. The cheapest ticket in the coach costs 580 rubles. Such train runs the same 8 hours, the driving would take you.

Book Train tickets Moscow - Saint Petersburg

3. By plane

The flight from St. Petersburg to Moscow or back takes the traveler 1 hour 20 minutes. A plenty of air carriers provides such service, from Aeroflot, the oldest, most respectable and expensive air company of Russia to low cost companies like Sky-express. The prices of the tickets begin from 500 rubles without airport charge and other extras. All the Moscow airports provide this service about three times a day. Doubtless, this way is the fastest one, especially if you use on-line registration. Unfortunately, not all of us like flying and plains.

FlixBus buses in Scotland

Coach service offers journeys across the UK for knockdown price of £2 each way

Hundreds of cut-price, sustainable intercity journeys are on special offer this week for trips across England, Scotland and Wales

A transport company is offering £2 tickets for coach trips across the UK to be taken up to May 12. With a £1 service fee, that means travellers planning journeys can book long-distance tickets from £3 on the FlixBus website or app.

In England there is a government-backed scheme capping local bus tickets at £2 until December 2024, but this offer opens up longer routes and also applies to journeys into and around Wales and Scotland, where the £2 cap doesn’t exist. So, if you fancy a trip through the blossoming valleys from Bristol to Swansea, or from Glasgow to Inverness via the Cairngorms, now is the time to book. The deal is available until Sunday 21 April.

The international travel tech company is celebrating three years of business in the UK. It runs in partnership with local coach companies using green, branded vehicles. Earlier this year FlixBus launched the first direct electric coach service between London Victoria station and Newport in south Wales two of around 75 UK destinations currently covered by the network.

FlixBus began as a German startup in 2013 and has grown exponentially since then to cover thousands of routes in more than 40 countries, entering the UK market in 2020. Last summer it launched the first ever regular routes from several UK cities, including Leeds and Cambridge, direct to Amsterdam. The buses aim to be cheap, sustainable, easy to book and comfortable, with free wifi and charging points on board.

The lowest-priced journeys include direct routes such as Manchester to Edinburgh, London to Bridgend, Bristol to Newcastle and hundreds more intercity connections. The whole FlixBus Scottish network is part of the £2 scheme with Inverness added as a new destination this month. In Scotland, National Entitlement Card and Young Scot cardholders can get free travel.

Andreas Schörling, managing director of FlixBus UK, said the network offers affordable tickets and “comfortable, modern vehicles” and is celebrating its third anniversary with “£2 travel around the vibrant cities and towns of the UK”. The company aims to “become the best-loved coach brand in the country”, he added, offering “reliable services to as many passengers as possible”.

  • Lufthansa is launching its new "Allegris" cabin on Airbus A350 planes starting in May.
  • Allegris represents a new era of comfort for Lufthansa and will initially serve Canada and the US.
  • The double bed-equipped first class suite will not deploy until late 2024 due to supplier delays.

After seven years of developments, Germany's flag carrier is finally launching a long-overdue cabin upgrade .

On Sunday, Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter announced on LinkedIn the delivery of the airline's first-ever Allegris-equipped airplane — an Airbus A350, registered D-AIXT and nicknamed Leipzig.

The airline said it would start flying the A350 and Allegris on select flights to North America in May, first to Vancouver and then to Toronto.

Lufthansa told the Runway Girl Network on Monday that these routes would be part of "the introductory phase, lasting several months." Routes to the US — the first planned to Chicago — are set to begin by "late summer 2024," the airline told RTN.

The rollout will touch economy, premium economy, and business class. A first-class cabin is also planned, but Lufthansa told RTN that supplier challenges have delayed its launch until late 2024.

Lufthansa did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Here's a closer look at Lufthansa's new Allegris cabin design, featuring everything from double beds to minibars.

Lufthansa first announced Allegris in 2017, but at the time planned to launch the new cabin on the Boeing 777X — not the A350.

Boeing's yet-to-be-certified 777-9 was expected to fly commercially by 2020 , but yearslong production problems have delayed that at least five years to 2025.

Lufthansa has shifted Allegris to the rival A350 amid the delays, the first spending weeks at the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France before being delivered to Lufthansa on Saturday, Ritter said on LinkedIn.

Some 27,000 seats across Lufthansa's fleet are set to be configured with Allegris.

Lufthansa plans to eventually fit the cabin onto more than 80 future aircraft, including Boeing 787-9s, the 777X, and more A350s.

Allegris covers four cabins: economy, premium economy, business class, and first class — the latter absent from Lufthansa's first A350s.

Lufthansa has postponed the deployment of Allegris first class to the fourth quarter of 2024.

Once eventually installed, first class is set to boast private suites with double beds, closets, and giant televisions.

Lufthansa said in a March 2023 press release that the ceiling-high walls, 40 square feet of space, and the fully closable door in first class convey the "feeling of privacy and individuality similar to a hotel room."

The cabin includes single suites and double suites, the latter is dubbed "Suite Plus" and is set to feature a wide couch that converts into a double bed big enough for two people.

Three suites will be available per A350 plane, Lufthansa said.

While Lufthansa awaits its most lucrative offering, flyers can book Allegris business class — and it's a big upgrade from current offerings.

Lufthansa has a notoriously mediocre business class, with many of its widebody planes — like the Boeing 747, the Airbus A330, and the Airbus A380 — sporting cabins in 2×2×2 layouts lacking direct-aisle access and privacy.

Following the trend of improving privacy in business class, Allegris will be on par with the likes of Qatar Airways, All Nippon Airways, and Delta Air Lines , which offer sliding doors in their premium cabins. Air India and British Airways have made similar upgrades.

<p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lufthansa-allegris-first-class-suites-double-beds-heated-seats-photos-2023-3#-that-can-be-combined-into-a-double-bed-4">basic option is called "Classic"</a> and has the expected bells and whistles of business class, like a lie-flat bed and direct aisle access.</p><p>Each also offers "generous" shoulder space to optimize sleep comfort, as well as the same heating and cooling system offered in first class, according to Lufthansa.</p>

According to the airline, its new business class offers seven unique seating options, starting with the "Classic" seat.

The basic option is called "Classic" and has the expected bells and whistles of business class, like a lie-flat bed and direct aisle access.

Each also offers "generous" shoulder space to optimize sleep comfort, as well as the same heating and cooling system offered in first class, according to Lufthansa.

<p>These include single and double suites in the first row, seats with extra work surfaces, high-privacy window seats with or without a baby bassinet, seats with extra-long beds, and a double berth in the last row.</p><p> The first-row suites are the only business class options with a door.</p>

Building on the Classic seat, Lufthansa offers six other options in business class.

These include single and double suites in the first row, seats with extra work surfaces, high-privacy window seats with or without a baby bassinet, seats with extra-long beds, and a double berth in the last row.

The first-row suites are the only business class options with a door.

<p>According to RTN, the Classic option will represent the base price of Allegris business class, with extra-amenity options costing more.</p><p>This unbundling approach means travelers who don't want a seat with more work space or a longer bed, for example, don't have to pay for things they don't need.</p>

This design strategy gives Lufthansa's Allegris business class passengers more choice.

According to RTN, the Classic option will represent the base price of Allegris business class, with extra-amenity options costing more.

This unbundling approach means travelers who don't want a seat with more work space or a longer bed, for example, don't have to pay for things they don't need.

<p>Premium economy is not completely new to the Lufthansa Group, with Switzerland-based SWISS, one of its brands, getting a similar cabin in the spring of 2022.</p>

A majority of those enjoying Lufthansa's new Allegris cabin are those flying in premium economy or regular coach.

Premium economy is not completely new to the Lufthansa Group, with Switzerland-based SWISS, one of its brands, getting a similar cabin in the spring of 2022.

<p>According to Lufthansa, its Allegris premium economy features more legroom and a legrest and can be "<span>adjusted even further back than the current model."</span></p><p><span>The seat offers about 39 inches of pitch.</span></p>

Premium economy features fixed-shell seats where the recline does not impede on the person in the row behind.

According to Lufthansa, its Allegris premium economy features more legroom and a legrest and can be " adjusted even further back than the current model."

The seat offers about 39 inches of pitch.

<p>A large 15.6-inch television with Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and universal power outlet, an adjustable headrest, leather armrests, and a cocktail table between the seats also will await flyers, the airline said.</p>

Passengers flying in the cabin will enjoy noise-canceling headphones, wireless charging, and an amenity kit, among other perks.

A large 15.6-inch television with Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and universal power outlet, an adjustable headrest, leather armrests, and a cocktail table between the seats also will await flyers, the airline said.

Although the lowest-end option, Lufthansa's new coach product offers plenty of comforts.

While Allegris will represent the next era of comfort for Lufthansa, it is not the airline's first cabin upgrade in recent years.
