Best Of Iceland Waterfalls Road Trip

Westfjords Road Trip

The Westfjords is a really fun and interesting part of Iceland. There are a few things you’ll need to know before visiting Iceland’s Westfjords . Much of it can be very difficult to reach during Iceland’s winter months, so this is best explored when there is a smaller chance of icy weather. If you want to see some super cute puffins, start your trip at the Latrabjarg Cliffs. From there, head to some of the amazing and unique beaches in the Westfjords. The Breiðavík Golden Beach and the Rauðasandur Red Sand Beach are both known for their unique sand colors and beautiful views.

One of the most popular things to see in the Westfjords is Dynjandi, a massive lacy and cascading waterfall. It is very wide and absolutely stunning in person. You don’t want to miss it. End your trip with a little bit of Icelandic culture. At the Holmavik Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, you’ll learn about a unique part of Iceland’s cultural history. It’s a super unique stop on this Iceland road trip itinerary.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula Road Trip

If you are looking for a shorter road trip in Iceland, consider the Snaefellsnes Peninsula Road Trip. There are several stops in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula , but it is a small part of Iceland, so it won’t take you too long to hit all of the best ones. Your first stop is Kirkjufell Mountain, which is Iceland’s most famous mountain. You will probably recognize it from several travel magazines and popular Iceland Instagram posts. From there, experience the Arnarstapi to Hellnar Cliff Walk.

Experience amazing views while hiking at the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. It’s not too far from the cliff walk and is actually one of the lesser-known attractions on the peninsula. Head to the coast before making your way to the end of your road trip in Iceland to see the stunning Londrangar Basalt Cliffs. From there, you’ll end your trip by taking some time to rest and relax after hiking the area at the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs. It can be tricky to find, and that means it is not a huge tourist area. Often times you’ll find you are the only ones who have made the trip to discover the geothermal pool on the abandoned farm.

East Fjords Road Trip Itinerary

• Streitisviti Lighthouse

The East Fjords Road Trip will take you along a portion of Iceland’s Southeastern Coast and a little bit inland. It is a beautiful part of the country and much of it is along the Ring Road . Start by admiring the unusual rock formations along the Laekjavik Coast. It is a black sand beach with rectangular rock formations jutting out from the ocean along the shore.

Continue your driving itinerary for Iceland’s East Fjords with a stop at the Streitisviti Lighthouse. It is a uniquely designed lighthouse on the coast built-in 1922. Next head up the coast to the Gufufoss waterfall. Spend some time hiking the area and admire the beautiful plunging waterfall. On your way back home, head a little inland to the Hengifoss waterfall. It is the 3rd highest waterfall in Iceland and well worth a little bit of a detour as you end your East Fjords road trip in Iceland.

Icelandic Highlands Road Trip

• Jökulsárlón

The Icelandic Highlands is a plateau in Southern Iceland that is sparsely inhabited. Your Icelandic Highlands Road Trip will give you the opportunity to see some of the most stunning and uninhabited parts of the country. In Thorsmork take some time to camp and hike in the valley. It is a beautiful nature reserve where you can see all kinds of animals in Iceland . It can be difficult to get to though, so consider taking a guided tour of Thorsmork . Continue through the Icelandic Highlands and make a stop at the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, one of the best National Parks in Iceland .

One of the most popular things to see there is Landmannalaugar which is the edge of the Laugahraun lava field. You’ll be able to experience some stunning views that were created by a volcanic eruption in the 1400s. Your next stop is another National Park, Vatnajökull. The entire park is centered around the massive Vatnajökull glacier which is an absolute must-see. End your tour of the beautiful highlands at Jökulsárlón, the glacial lake just on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park.

Small Towns In Iceland Road Trip

On the Small Towns in Iceland Road Trip, you’ll drive around almost the entire country stopping at so many cute small towns along the way. In Seyðisfjörður you’ll get a taste of what it is like to live in Iceland’s Eastern Fjords. It is an adorable town off the Ring Road and has the Fjarðarheiði Mountain Pass which connects the plateau it’s on to the rest of Iceland. From there head to the charming village of Reykjahlíð which has a population of just over 220. It is on the shores of Lake Mývatn which is a beautiful place to stop.

Continue around Iceland’s Northern coast and towards the Snæfellsnes peninsula where you’ll find the beautiful town of Stykkishólmur. It is the main town on the peninsula and you’ll find a few tourist attractions there. As you make your way around Iceland, stop in Heimaey, which is actually an island just off of Iceland’s southern coast. You’ll need to take either the ferry or fly to get there, but it is worth the trip. End your road trip in Iceland in the town of Höfn. There you’ll be able to see massive glaciers while you stroll through town.

Icelandic Hot Springs Road Trip

One of the things Iceland is most known for is its Hot Spring culture. It is one of the most popular things to do in Iceland, so why not take an Icelandic Hot Springs Road Trip. Start at the iconic Blue Lagoon just outside of Reykjavik. This one is pretty touristy, but it is one of the most well-known. Next, you’ll want to stop at Sky Lagoon and then the Reykjadalur Hot Spring. Both are still pretty close to Reykjavic, but they aren’t as full of tourists as the Blue Lagoon.

As you head farther from Reykjavic, make stops at the Secret Lagoon and then the Hrunalaug Hot Springs. Hrunalaug is tucked away in the mountains, so it is much quieter and you get some absolutely stunning views. Head father down Iceland’s southern coast to Seljavallalaug Hot Springs. It is incredibly dreamy you take an easy hike to get there, which makes it more secluded within the mountains.

It is Iceland’s oldest man-made swimming pool, but keep in mind it is not nearly as hot as you might expect from an Iceland hot spring. If you have the time, drive out to the Djupavogskorin Geothermal Pool to finish your Iceland road trip of the best hot springs.

Hidden Gems In Iceland Road Trip

There are so many hidden gems in Iceland that they deserve their own road trip. In Valahnukamol you’ll discover a hidden area of beach where you’ll find otherworldly rocks jutting out from the ocean as waves crash against them. It isn’t a well-known area, which is why it’s a hidden gem, and that also means it’s not full of tourists. At the Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, you’ll find a beautiful two square mile lagoon, with very few tourists. It is just off the Ring Road, but not very crowded at all.

One of the more unique things to see in Iceland is the Viking Village Film Set. It was built in 2010 and was meant to resemble an old Viking village for a movie that was being filmed in the area. It is just off of a gravel road outside of Hofn and not many people know about it. It’s a cool way to experience a taste of early life in Iceland. End your trip at the stunning hidden gem that is the Studlagil Basalt Canyon. The canyon is made of towering basalt rock columns with a beautiful blue glacial river flowing through it. It is an absolute must-see, and fairly free of tourists.

Einzige Bemerkung habe ich jedoch: Man verlässt sich bei der Buchung der Reise auf Wall der Veranstalter, was Hotel angeht, und geht davon aus, dass alle Hotels in gleiche Kategorie gebucht sind. Das war aber sehr unterschiedlich - vom sehr guten Mittelklasse bis sehr einfach, und Upgrade war leider nicht immer möglich. Hotelpersonal war überall, auch in einem einfachen Hotel sehr freundlich und um die Gäste bemüht. Trotzdem, bei der nächste Buchung werde viel genaue mir Hotels Liste ansehen, oder selbst buchen müssen.

The 8 most spectacular road trips in Iceland

Driving in Iceland is a dreamy experience, and having your own set of wheels offers the freedom to explore the country at your own pace.

Picture the scene: you’re gliding along a road curling around a snowy hillside. On your right, a steep, rocky slope, the top shrouded in fog. On your left, the surf beats against vertical cliffs, with sea birds circling overhead. Before you, the crystal blue waters of yet another fjord stretch out to the horizon. 

There’s no better feeling than heading out and seeing where the road takes you. But, should you require a little more structure to your overland odyssey, we’ve selected eight unforgettable Iceland road trips to get you started.

1. Hit the road on the Blue Diamond tourist route

Best road trip for volcanic activity Keflavík International Airport  –  Keflavík International Airport; 75 – 115km (50 – 70 miles); 1 day

From Keflavík International Airport, the Blue Diamond tourist route loops around the otherworldly lava landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula , through quiet seaside villages and the wondrous Reykjanes Geopark, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.

Nowhere else are the borders between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates as visible. All around are signs of geothermal and volcanic activity: the milky blue waters of the  Blue Lagoon steam into the sky, while  Geldingadalir (which erupted in 2021 and again in August 2022, but is now inactive) continues to wow visitors. Check safety alerts before you visit. 

There are many more discoveries to be made on the route, including the windswept shore by Reykjanes lighthouse and Kleifarvatn Lake (home, according to legend, to a wormlike monster the size of a whale), and there are myriad hiking trails.

Planning tip: You can do a round trip in less than a day, but it’s worth staying for a few days to fully explore the region.

2. Take Road 435 as an alternative to the Golden Circle

Best road trip in summer Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 225km (140 miles), 1 day

For a different take on the Golden Circle – Iceland’s most popular day tour – try Nesjavallaleið (Road 435), which is open in the summer. It slings through moss-covered lava landscapes and up and down steep hills, with a breathtaking view of Þingvallavatn Lake in the distance. Along the road are quite a few marked hiking trails, beckoning road trippers to temporarily ditch the car and get up close and personal with the stunning landscape.

Puffs of steam are the telltale sign that you’re approaching Nesjavallavirkjum Power Plant and the exclusive ION Adventure Hotel . The road continues along placid lakes, including Úlfljótsvatn with a lonely church on its banks. You drive through a summer house region – where city dwellers go for weekend breaks – and then onto the main road past the perfectly circular Kerið crater lake, one of the obligatory Golden Circle stops.

After gawking at Gullfoss waterfall and spying Geysir (from which all other geysers take their name), you can drive back via Þingvellir National Park with a quick visit to the curious cave houses of Laugarvatnshellar.

Local tip: Bookworms should also consider making a stop at Gljúfrasteinn Laxness Museum in Mosfellsdalur. The museum is the former home of prominent Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955.

3. Drive through the remote East Fjords

Best road trip to explore Iceland's maritime heritage Egilsstaðir – Egilsstaðir; approx 820km (510 miles), 5 days

Set up camp in Egilsstaðir and you’ll be in prime position to uncover the magical East Fjords. First, visit the village of Vopnafjörður, home to Selárlaug, a swimming pool on the banks of a salmon-filled river, which is also popular for fishing. In summer, you could cross the spectacular mountain pass Hellisheiði eystri (Road 917) to get here – but with its narrow and steep gravel road, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Regardless, take the easy way back (Road 85 and Road 1) to Borgarfjörður eystri, and recharge at the village of Bakkagerði with a hotel and spa, puffin-watching house and popular music festival Bræðslan, held in July. It’s also a good base for hiking in the stunning surroundings, with the trek to Stórurð, a turquoise lake enclaved by massive boulders, a particularly popular route.

You must return to Egilsstaðir before moving on to the next fjords on the route: Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður. Here, the maritime heritage of this region is honored in elegantly renovated historic houses: Randulfssjóhús in Eskifjörður and Beituskúrinn in Neskaupstaður, both of which now function as excellent, atmospheric restaurants. Drive back through Fáskrúðsfjörður to Stöðvarfjörður, where Petra’s Stone Collection museum amazes, showcasing the sheer variety of minerals that can be found in the mountains in the country’s east. From here, it’s a straight run back to Egilsstaðir for the last time – remember to watch out for reindeer!

4. See the Westfjords by road and ferry

Best scenic road trip Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 765km (475 miles)

On the way to the Westfjord from Reykjavík , you’ll drive through the rural region of Dalir. Here, dairy farm Erpsstaðir makes for a great first pitstop on the journey, where you can learn about traditional farming life and sample the homemade cheeses and other treats. There are also a number of historical sites nearby, including Eiríksstaðir, a living museum about life in the Viking era, and Guðrúnarlaug , the replica of the pool where the beautiful heroine of Laxdæla saga (one of the famous medieval Icelandic sagas) used to bathe.

Leaving Dalir in the rearview mirror, the first Westfjordian town you’ll reach is Reykhólar, home to Sjávarböðin, a spa specializing in seaweed baths (said to have all manner of healing properties). From here, the drive along the peninsula’s southern coast on steep gravel roads is both awe-inspiring and borderline scary, but your reward is a stroll on red-sand beach Rauðasandur and the view from Látrabjarg, Iceland’s westernmost point. Látrabjarg is also a haven for birdlife, with thousands of seabirds, including puffins, razorbills and guillemots, nesting in the cliffs.

You can take the ferry from Brjánslækur back, via Flatey , an idyllic island that seems to be frozen in time. It used to be the bustling center of the Breiðafjörður islands, but today, only seven people live there year-round. From here, the ferry takes you onwards to Stykkishólmur on Snæfellsnes , entering via a beautiful harbor overlooked by a distant lighthouse. It’s a view that might tempt you to stay a while.

Local tip:  If you have time to explore Stykkishólmur, check out the Library of Water , a modern art museum, and sample the locally sourced seafood on offer at Sjávarpakkhúsið .

5. Cruise around the otherworldly Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Best road trip for varied landscapes Start/end – Reykjavík; approx 440km (275 miles)

In clear weather, you can see the alluring ice cap Snæfellsjökull from Reykjavík. The drive there is an adventure with ever-changing landscapes. You’ll find sand and pebble beaches, volcanoes, a glacier and rhyolite mountains, lava fields and grassy terrain, caves, bird-filled cliffs and waterfalls.

The peninsula’s southern side is graced by the white-sand beach Löngufjörur, a hot spot for horseback riding, the otherworldly lava landscape around Búðir and the many wonders of Snæfellsjökull National Park .

On the northern side, there are charming fishing villages and Kirkjufell , one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains – particularly popular when the northern lights are out . Although it’s possible to do a whirlwind tour of Snæfellsnes in a day, you can easily spend a few: hiking, bird watching, sailing or simply taking in the views of the immense glacier.

6. Drive beyond the Ring Road on the ancient Kjölur route

Best road trip for Iceland's interior  Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 1378km (856 miles), at least a week

Spice up your Ring Road (Route 1) adventure by cutting through the barren interior of the country. Road 35, which splinters off from Route 1 past Gullfoss waterfall , continues along the ancient Kjölur route between glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull. It’s an F-road, so it requires a 4WD vehicle and is only open in the summer, but it is not as difficult as some of the other highland routes (for example, there are no river crossings.)

Around the halfway point is Hveravellir , an oasis of sorts in the snowy desert landscape, with a lodge, a natural pool for bathing and a multicolor geothermal area with marked hiking trails, including to Kerlingarfjöll mountains. You enter the Ring Road again about an hour’s drive from Akureyri , the “capital” of the north, which is great for catching up on some culture, visiting galleries or having a night on the town (with at least three bars to choose from!).

The Ring Road will take you from fjord to fjord, past eerie mountains and into quiet seaside villages. Fáskrúðsfjörður is known for a museum that honors the legacy of French sailors, located inside the beautifully renovated French hospital. In Breiðdalsvík drop by microbrewery Beljandi (named after a waterfall by the same name) and in Djúpivogur take a look at the granite egg sculptures in Gleðivík by renowned artist Sigurður Guðmundsson.

7. Explore local legends on the Diamond Circle

Best road trip of north Iceland Húsavík – Húsavík; approx 250km (155 miles), 2 days

North Iceland’s answer to the Golden Circle is the Diamond Circle . Make your base in the whale-watching town of Húsavík and head east to Ásbyrgi at the northern realms of Vatnajökull National Park . The horseshoe-shaped canyon is characterized by vertical cliffs – walk to the top of Eyjan for an amazing view of the sand beaches to the north and the North Atlantic. This is gyrfalcon territory, the largest falcon in the world, so keep an eye out for the majestic raptors.

With its lovely lake, lava fields, steaming fumaroles and bubbling hot springs, the Mývatn area is an obligatory stop on the drive back to Húsavík. Take time to marvel at the mighty Goðafoss waterfall in Skjálfandafljót. It’s called the “waterfall of the gods” because legend has it that the lawspeaker (a role in ancient Scandinavian society where someone is entrusted to recite the law) Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his pagan sculptures in the falls after deciding that Icelanders should convert to Christianity in 1000 CE. Further upstream is Aldeyjarfoss, another spectacular waterfall surrounded by columnar basalt.

Planning tip: Don’t forget to reserve some time for Húsavík itself, a bustling town with interesting museums and fabulous seafood restaurants. Geosea Geothermal Sea Baths are perched up on Húsavíurhöfði next to a yellow lighthouse with an unobstructed view of the whale-watching boats on Skjálfandi Bay.

8. Take a leisurely drive along the Arctic Coast Way

Best coastal road trip for taking your sweet time Hvammstangi – Bakkafjörður; approx 900km (560 miles), 2 weeks

Designed for slow travel, the Arctic Coast Way slings along Iceland’s northern coastline, encompassing sleepy villages, six islands and amazing natural sites few people get to see. The route starts at the seal-watching town Hvammstangi in northwest Iceland and ends in windblown Bakkafjörður in the northeast. Along the way, drivers will encounter dramatic views, lonely lighthouses and some interesting stories.

At Þrístapar, you can learn about the gruesome fate of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the heroine of Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites who was the last woman executed in Iceland. • The luggage limit for this tour is one small backpack and one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20kg (44lbs). • You are guaranteed an accommodation at a nice country hotel and/or a guesthouse. The hotels we have partnered up with are all of the same standard and offer nice rooms with made-up beds. The rooms come with private bathrooms.

The photos that you see on our website are from recent tours, but note that the ice caves might have changed due to the dynamic nature of these formations. 
• Sometimes we may need to change glaciers or glacier outlets on this tour for various reasons, including weather conditions. Glacier outlets used on this tour include Svínafellsjökull, Falljökull, and Sólheimajökull, all amazing and unique glaciers, equally as beautiful. From November to March, we replace the glacier hike with a tour through the Vatnajokull ice caves.
• Lunch & dinner is not included in the tour. Your guide will find a good place for the group to eat lunch. We always choose places that have a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone.
• The dinner is usually at the hotels we stay at for the night.

The first day of our 7-day Ring Road tour begins with a pick-up from your accommodation or a nearby pick-up point in Reykjavík. We’ll kick off the day with a visit to the famous Golden Circle’s three main attractions. We’ll start at Þingvellir National Park , an essential location for every Icelander. Established in 930 CE/AD, it’s the world’s oldest continually operating parliament. UNESCO recognizes it as a World Heritage Site for its geological, cultural, and historical significance. You’ll also see Þingvallavatn, home to the Silfra fissure, which runs down between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The cliff of the rift valley runs through the National Park.

After exploring Þingvellir, we’ll head to the geothermally active hot spring area at Geysir . Although Great Geysir is inactive, Strokkur , a nearby hot spring, erupts with impressive torrents of superheated water every 5 to 10 minutes. We’ll complete the Golden Circle with a visit to Gullfoss waterfall , where you’ll feel the power of the falls as they drop 32 meters in two stages through the high, rugged canyon.

Next, we’ll drive along the picturesque South Coast, stopping at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall , where you’ll have the unique opportunity to walk the pathway behind the falling cascade. We’ll continue onwards to the scenic Skógafoss waterfall , where the water cascades over former sea cliffs, creating a beautiful backdrop for rainbows. After breakfast and checking out from our hotel, we’ll continue our journey along the south coast towards Skaftafell and Vatnajökull National Park , a protected wilderness area spanning 13,600 km2, home to Vatnajökull glacier, Hvannadalsnúkur – Iceland’s highest peak, Skaftafell, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, among other natural wonders. This tour offers the opportunity to visit all three of Iceland’s national parks: Þingvellir, Vatnajökull, and Snæfellsjökull.

During our stop at Skaftafell, we’ll embark on a glacier hike led by a certified guide, equipped with crampons and all the necessary gear to explore one of Vatnajökull’s outlet glaciers. These unique glacier tongues offer stunning views, with crevasses and moulins that lead down to the glacier’s base. Our guides are happy to answer any questions you may have during the hike.

From October to April, the glacier hike is replaced with an ice cave excursion, where you can explore the glacier’s heart and see Iceland’s magnificent ice caps from the inside.

Scenes from James Bond movies and other films have been filmed here, and the glittering blue icebergs eventually make their way to Diamond Beach , a black sand beach where they rest like sparkling diamonds on the shore.

We’ll spend the night in comfortable accommodation in Höfn , a charming seaside town known as the lobster capital of Iceland. In winter, we’ll search for the Northern Lights near our hotel.

Eldhraun lava fields are a vast expanse of moss-covered lava flows in Iceland, formed by a volcanic eruption in 1783. The fields are located in the southern part of Iceland and cover an area of around 565 square kilometers, making it one of the largest lava fields in the world. The moss-covered lava formations create a unique and otherworldly landscape, with small streams and rivers winding their way through the rugged terrain. Visitors can explore the area on foot and marvel at the incredible natural beauty of this geological wonder.

Skaftafell Nature Reserve is a stunning wilderness area located in the southeast of Iceland, known for its dramatic landscapes, glaciers, and hiking trails. The reserve is part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park and offers visitors the chance to explore rugged terrain, including waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic peaks. Some of the popular activities in Skaftafell include glacier hiking, ice climbing, and hiking to the Svartifoss waterfall. Glacier hiking on Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, is a unique experience that offers breathtaking views of stunning ice formations and sweeping vistas. As we journey, we’ll catch sight of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, home to the unpredictable Katla, one of the most renowned and dreaded volcanoes, lurking beneath its icy surface. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of this fiery giant! Continuing on, we’ll witness the aftermath of past volcanic eruptions while crossing the Eldhraun lava field en route to Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. Skaftafell is a haven of green birch forests and thriving vegetation, a vibrant gem amid the rugged black sand wasteland.

Led by our expert glacier guide, we’ll embark on a three-hour  glacier hike across a Vatnajökull glacier  – Europe’s largest glacier. Alternatively, from October to April, we’ll take a fascinating tour of the  Crystal Ice Cave  in place of the glacier hike.

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a breathtaking natural wonder located in southeast Iceland. The lagoon is formed by melting ice from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which flows into a lake and then out to the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can witness the awe-inspiring sight of icebergs of various shapes and sizes floating in the lagoon, as well as spot seals and various seabirds. The Diamond Beach is a stunning black sand beach located next to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland. On day three of our seven-day trip around Iceland, we bid farewell to the stunning Vatnajökull National Park area, but the breathtaking scenery persists. Winding through the East Fjords , we drive on roads bordered by the coast on one side and magnificent mountain peaks on the other until we reach Egilsstaðir . This charming town sits on the banks of the Lagarfljót River and is famous for the legend of Largarfljótasormurinn or the Largarfljót worm, a giant worm said to reside in the lake and reveal itself occasionally, an enduring element of Icelandic folklore.

Along the way, we make a stop at Djúpivogur , a small, remote fishing village that boasts a rich birdlife thriving on its black sandy beach. During the summer months, the majority of Icelandic birds make this area their home and breeding ground, leading the locals to joke that there are more birds than people in the town. Despite its size, Djúpivogur’s approximately 1100 inhabitants are renowned for their warm hospitality and staunch dedication to eco-issues.

The day concludes with a visit to the Vök Baths , situated on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn, where we can relax and soak in the geothermal waters while taking in the magnificent views. The Vök Baths are known for their modern design and the distinction of being Iceland’s only floating infinity pools. The cost of enjoying a hot bath at the Vök Baths is optional and is not included in the trip’s booking fees. If interested, please book the experience as an additional service.

Day four of our seven-day trip around Iceland is packed with breathtaking highlights in North Iceland. Our journey from Egilssaðir takes us through remote and untamed landscapes, starting with the awe-inspiring Stuðlagil Canyon, one of the world’s most enchanting basalt rock formations. On the way to see the magnificent Dettifoss waterfall , we’ll stop at Möðrudalur, which at 469m, is Iceland’s highest farm. With a flow rate of 193 m3/s (6,816 cu ft/s), Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, and the thundering Jökulsá á Fjöllum River plunges 44m (144 ft) through a rugged canyon. The rawness and vastness of the nature surrounding Dettifoss, where the great river and glacial floods have carved out imposing ravines, are truly awe-inspiring.

Next, we’ll visit Hverfjall , a volcano crater created by an eruption 2500 years ago, and the Dimmuborgir lava formations, also known as the “dark cities.” Some of these towering lava formations will remind you of fairytale giants. Dimmuborgir was formed when the roof of a giant lava tube collapsed, and although completely natural, some formations may resemble certain shapes. Can you guess which one is The Church (Kirkjan)?

As we continue our drive around picturesque Lake Mývatn en route to Akureyri , we’ll make a stop at the stunningly beautiful Goðafoss Waterfall .

On day 5 of the 7 day trip around Iceland, we will begin by driving through Akureyri , the capital of North Iceland, where we may have time for a brief stop on select departures. Then we will make our way to the charming fishing town of Dalvík , with stunning views of Eyjafjörður , Iceland’s longest fjord, along the way.

In Dalvík, we will embark on an exciting whale-watching boat tour , exploring Eyjafjörður Fjord and searching for a variety of marine life, including humpback whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and even blue whales, if we’re lucky!

Continuing our scenic drive along the Tröllaskagi peninsula , we will pass through charming villages and hamlets before reaching Siglufjörður . Once the herring fishing capital of the Atlantic, this village has a rich history and well-preserved character, offering a glimpse into Icelandic life from the early twentieth century.

As we travel through farmlands with fields of Icelandic horses, we will eventually arrive at Laugarbakki , where we will spend the night at a cozy country hotel. From September to April, our guide will help us search for the elusive Northern Lights in the clear night skies.

Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland, located in the northern part of the country. It’s known for its picturesque location, surrounded by mountains and situated at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord. The city offers a range of cultural activities and attractions, including museums, galleries, and theaters, as well as plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and whale watching. It’s also home to several universities and has a vibrant student population.

As we drive through Akureyri, we will enjoy the captivating scenery along Eyjafjörður (the Island Fjord) on our way to the small fishing town of Dalvík.

The boat for your whale-watching excursion sets sail from the historic operational harbor. You will be cruising for 3 hours, and it’s highly probable that you will see humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and minke whales. You may even catch a glimpse of the magnificent blue whale if you are fortunate enough.

Tröllaskagi is a stunning peninsula located in northern Iceland, known for its dramatic mountains, pristine fjords, and rich cultural heritage. The name Tröllaskagi, which means “troll peninsula,” is derived from Icelandic folklore, which describes the region as the dwelling place of trolls and other magical beings.

The peninsula is characterized by its rugged and diverse landscape, which includes steep mountains, deep valleys, and rolling hills. It is also home to several picturesque fishing villages, including Siglufjörður, which is renowned for its rich history and scenic beauty.

Upon disembarking, we will drive to Siglufjörður , a picturesque fishing village with a fascinating history. In the early 1900s, this remote community became the herring fishing capital of the Atlantic, creating a gold rush atmosphere. As we journey through Tröllaskagi (the Troll Peninsula), you will witness some of Iceland’s most breathtaking ocean views and ski areas. The charming small villages along the peninsula will provide insight into life in remote Icelandic communities, past and present. Our drive will take us through thriving agricultural areas en route to Laugarbakki.

Today we will explore the area surrounding Borgarfjörður in West Iceland, which was voted one of the best travel destinations by Lonely Planet in 2016. Our first destination is Grábrók , a volcano crater that offers stunning views of the lava fields and landscapes stretching into the distance. We will take a short hike to the top of the crater, weather permitting.

Next, we will visit Deildartunguhver hot spring, the most powerful hot spring in Europe, supplying hot water to the surrounding area. We will also visit Hraunfossar waterfall , where thousands of creeks pour out of the lava, creating a picturesque and vast waterfall. We will then move on to the nearby Barnafoss waterfall , known as the ‘Children’s Falls,’ with a fascinating legend that your guide will share with you.

Our final stop for the day is Reykholt , an important place in Icelandic history, particularly in medieval times. We will visit Snorralaug , the hot spring pool named after the 12th/early-13th-century scholar, lawyer, historian, and saga writer, Snorri Sturluson. Stand by the pool where Snorri is believed to have bathed and reflect on the threads of Icelandic history that are woven together here.

At the end of an awe-inspiring day, we will drive through the charming countryside of Borgarfjörður and drop you off at your hotel in Borgarnes . In the winter months, spend the night chasing the Northern Lights!

On day 7 of our Icelandic adventure, we will be joined by our Snæfellsnes guide who will pick us up at 8 a.m. From there, we will embark on a full day exploring the stunning Snæfellsnes Peninsula, renowned for its rugged cliffs, black sand beaches, and magnificent glacier mountains.

As we drive through the picturesque countryside, you’ll be treated to breathtaking coastal and mountain views. Our first stop will be the charming seaside village of Arnarstapi , where we’ll visit the impressive natural Miðgjá rock arch, as well as the 19th-century Búðakirkja church .

We will then make a stop for lunch at the village of Hellnar (food and drink not included) before heading into Snæfellsnes National Park . There, we’ll have the chance to explore the enchanting moss-covered lava landscapes and enjoy stunning views of Snæfellsjökull Glacier . This glacier was famously featured in Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, where it served as the entry point to the underworld.

Our next destination is the magnificent black pebble beach at Djúpalónssandur , surrounded by strikingly shaped cliffs. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the beach and test your strength with the ‘lifting stones’ that fishermen once used to lift boulders.

As we make our way back to Reykjavík, we’ll stop at Kirkjufell , a mountain that many consider to be Iceland’s most photographed. You can judge for yourself as you take in the stunning scenery. We will arrive back in Reykjavík at around 8 p.m . after a week of incredible sights and exhilarating experiences. We will drop you off at your original pick-up location.

Ring road - car vs tour.

You can easily travel all the way around the Ring Road in about 6-8 days, although some people choose to take two weeks or more to explore all of the different tourist sites along the ring road. Of course, you could also take a longer tour of the ring road by car or by motorcycle if you prefer, but keep in mind that you'll need plenty of gas if you're planning on driving the entire route. The Ring road is about 1322 kilometers long in total (828 miles).

As it circles the island, you will be able to reach the different parts of Iceland (except the highlands and Westfjords).

You can find great accommodation all around Iceland, but we really recommend our Troll Villa in Hof which you can find here.

One of the best things about the ring road is that it gives you the chance to really experience all of the country's natural beauty. You'll pass through many beautiful small towns throughout the trip, and you'll even get the chance to see geothermal pools and hot rivers in action.

Day 1: Golden Circle

Start the day off to see Thingvellir National Park, then go to Haukadalur Geothermal Area where you will see the famous Geysir, the original one that has named all other geysers in the World. Then go to Gullfoss, where water from the glacial river Hvítá rushes down two tiers of a 32-meter fall. 

Day 2: The South Coast

Continue your journey heading to the South Coast towards magnificent Seljalandsfoss, with a 65-meter drop. If you have not had enough waterfalls, you can move on to another one, Skógafoss, one of Iceland's largest waterfalls. You could also go on the Katla Ice Cave tour with a Super Jeep ride starting in Vík. To end the day, you would visit the famous Black Sand Beach, Reynisfjara. One of the most famous Icelandic places to visit with truly unique nature all around you. 

Day 3: The South - East

Start the day with a Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull where you will be surrounded by one of the largest glaciers in Europe. After that you will go to Jökulsárlón, where you can take an unforgettable boat ride around Jölsárlón Glacier Lagoon (during summer), where you will get a chance to get close to floating icebergs. Next to the Glacier Lagoon, only a few minutes away, you have the Diamond Beach, where the icebergs strand on the sand and resemble crystals as they lie on the black satin beach. 

Day 4: The East Fjords

Explore amazing and rare wildlife in the east of Iceland. This is the only place in Iceland where you might see wild Reindeer sometimes. With high mountain ridges and Icelandic history in peaceful fishing villages, you will experience Icelandic culture. This is a great place to try out the famous Icelandic horse by going on a horseback riding trip. You could also take a nice geothermal bath in VÖK Baths, which will allow you complete relaxation and a chance to experience the geothermal nature of Iceland up close.

Day 5: The Mývatn Area and Dettifoss

Lake Mývatn and its beautiful surroundings are next up. You will explore the geothermal region around the Lake. This day is packed with further amazing sightseeing locations: Námaskarð pass, a high-temperature geothermal area where the earth boils and gurgles; Dimmuborgir, a field of peculiar shaped lava pillars that rise from the earth; the majestic Dettifoss waterfall from the Prometheus movie opening scene, with a 100 meters wide and 44 meters high fall into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon; the old forest Ásbyrgi situated in a horseshoe-shaped canyon, the phenomenal waterfall Goðafoss, important in Christian Icelandic history.

On the way to Akureyri, your next overnight stop, we’ll pass through the fishing village Húsavík, now famous for being The Hometown of the movie Fire Saga: Eurovision and some resourceful elves.

Day 6: North Iceland

North Iceland - Explore Akureyri, the largest town in the north of Iceland, and the nearby villages. Explore the beautiful small village, Hauganes, and go whale watching!

Day 7: Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Move on to the magnificent Snæfellsnes Peninsula, it welcomes you with its world of cliffs, mountain capes, unique wildlife and ancient fishing settlements. You will visit Gerðuberg, a hexagonal basalt column cluster - made of over 600 basalt columns. Next up is Ytri-Tunga where you will find both a black and white beach and a seal colony! After that you will go to Djúpalónssandur, one of the most beautiful beaches in Iceland. Víðgelmir Lava Cave is next to it where you can take an unforgettable journey into Iceland’s largest lava cave.

Day 8: West Iceland

West Iceland - Your first stop will be Deildartunguhver, which is the most powerful hot spring in Europe and you can see the hot steam and boiling water bubbling from the ground. The surface around the hot spring has turned red from the minerals and steam surrounding it. 

Your next stop will be Reykholt, a location with a significant historical heritage as it was the home of Snorri Sturluson. After that, you will visit two different but equally special waterfalls - Hraunfossar and Barnafoss.

The tour covers the Golden Circle, Mývatn, natural springs, waterfalls, and a glacier lagoon, among other famous attractions. This tour is recommended to anyone who is looking to see most of Iceland in less than a week.

8-Day Guided Tour

If you have more time, the road trip c an be extended to an eight-day Ring Road tour . This tour covers the same attractions as the six-day option but with two additional days in Reykjavík. The capital of Iceland is a modern and vibrant city with plenty of entertainment and attractions. Two days is the perfect amount of time to explore this charming city and immerse yourself in Icelandic culture.

7-Day Guided Tour

Another popular option is the seven-day guided Ring Road tour which takes you around the Ring Road in six days and to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula on the last day. Self-drive tours begin at Keflavik airport, where a rental car is waiting for you. You also have the option to pick up the car from the BSI bus terminal in Reykjavík . All of our self-drive Ring Road tours include car rental, hotel accommodation, and breakfast.

Guide to the ring road in iceland.

If you are searching for a   truly memorable experience , traveling Iceland’s Ring Road is the way to go! It takes you through some of the   world’s most dramatic   countryside. In fact, Iceland’s Ring Road is often listed as one of the   world’s most beautiful road trips .

You will travel through mind-blowing landscapes. Plenty of   bucket-list-worthy destinations   await you, including active volcanoes, blue glaciers, stunning waterfalls, black volcanic beaches, and so much more.

Visit the   extraordinary natural attractions , lovely small towns, and fishing villages that Iceland is so famous for. After traveling around the country, you will know Iceland in-depth and will have made   lifelong memories.

In the   following guide,   we will   introduce the main areas   of Iceland and the   20 best natural attractions you must visit . This will give you a brief overview of all the information that is   good to know before traveling   around Iceland’s Ring Road. If you are planning to rent a car and do a Ring Road Tour yourself, this will help you to   prepare for your trip   accordingly.

• Iceland's Ring Road is   1332 kilometers (828 miles)   long.
• The speed limit in rural areas is   90 km/h (55 mph) .

• The speed limit in populated areas is 50 km/h (31 mph).
• 98%   of the Ring Road is   paved .
• The Ring Road has   two lanes , but there are some single-lane bridges.
• The Ring Road is maintained year round, but   occasional road closures   are not uncommon, especially in winter.
• If the Ring Road is closed there are no alternatives, most of the time. You will have to wait until it reopens.
• Driving the Ring Road   in winter   (mid-October to mid-April)   requires a 4x4   and a driver with a lot of experience driving in winter conditions.

• Technically, the complete Ring Road can be driven in less than 24 hours without stopping.
• If stopping at the natural attractions along the way, it will take you   at least a week   to complete the circle   in summer and - due to lack of daylight -   two weeks in winter.
• If you do not want to spend too much time in the car, count on taking 10 to 14 days to complete the trip.
• If you are not comfortable with driving or if you want to join a group of like-minded travelers, you can go on   a guided Ring Road Tour.

Off-road driving   is illegal   in Iceland and is subject to very high fines. If you are keen to experience the adrenaline of off-road driving, go on a   buggy   or   ATV adventure tour ! These tours will take you to places where you can legally drive on rough dirt roads and enjoy going crazy speeds without disturbing or damaging Icelandic nature.

It is also   illegal and dangerous to pull over on the side of the road   at random places to take photos or watch the Northern Lights. Instead, find a place with a rest area to park your car safely and legally.

There is   no wrong way   to travel the Ring Road. The landscape is   equally beautiful   in both directions. There are, however, a few factors you might want to consider.

The south coast is packed full of mind-blowing beauties that are located fairly close together along the way. The other parts of the country are also very pretty, of course, but the south usually has a greater impact on travelers. So, the question is: are you the type of person that likes to start with the most delicious bite of cake? Or do you save the best bite for last?   It is up to you to decide!

Gas Stations

There are numerous gas stations along the Ring Road. You will find them near towns, but in between, they are less frequent. All stations accept credit or debit cards. Gas is not cheap in Iceland, costing approximately at $2 USD per liter ($7.50 per gallon) in 2018 (See up-to-date prices here). Fill up whenever you can, especially in winter.

The best thing to do is to   stock up on groceries in Reykjavík.   The best selection and the longest opening hours are probably found in the capital. The most well-known supermarket chains are Bónus, Krónan, and Nettó. You will find many of them in Reykjavík and in the larger towns on the Ring Road. In addition, many   gas stations offer hot dogs , sandwiches, hot soup, and basic groceries as well.

SIM Cards and Network Coverage

It is a good idea to buy prepaid Icelandic SIM card. Vodafone and NOVA are equally good with   satisfactory network coverage   around the Route 1. You can buy SIM cards at many gas stations or shopping malls, such as Kringlan and Smáralind in Reykjavik.

Accommodation

Campsites are abundant   in Iceland and there is no need to prebook. Most campgrounds open in May and close in September. A few campsites remain open year round to accommodate campervans. It is not recommended to camp in winter in Iceland, however. Please, note that   it is illegal to spend the night in a campervan , motorhome or any type of vehicle   outside of designated campsites . 

If you are not camping or sleeping in a van, you will need to   book your accommodation in advance . If you book one of our Self-Drive Packages, though, it will include your accommodation along the entire route, so you will not have to worry about it.

Some of the following destinations are not directly on the Ring Road. These   attractions are very close to Route 1 , however, and therefore are highly recommended detours. If visiting these places, do not forget they will add additional time to your journey.

South Iceland

As you start driving east from Reykjavík, the Ring Road goes towards volcanic foothills with steam rising up from hot springs into the air around Hveragerði. Then you will travel through a wide coastal plain full of charming farms where horses and sheep run freely through the meadows.

Soon, the scenery begins to grow wonderfully jagged. Stunning mountains, giant waterfalls, and cliffs frame the road on one side while the ocean stretches endlessly on the other side. You will drive past furious volcanoes, some of them still active today and due to erupt at any time. The landscape is incredibly varied and fascinating in the entirety of Route 1.

After traveling through the largest lava field in the world, the first of the thrilling glacier tongues of Vatnajökull will appear. This scenery is truly enchanting! You will travel past numerous glaciers and some glacier lagoons as well. South Iceland is the most visited part of the country and contains some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the country.

Seljalandsfoss .  This is the famous waterfall that you can walk behind to see the world through the falling water. The views are truly astonishing! The waterfall drops over 60 meters (197 feet) with intense power.

Skógafoss .  The other great Icelandic celebrity, this waterfall is 60 meters (200 feet) high and 25 meters (82 feet) wide. If possible, it is even more scenic than Seljalandsfoss! You are not able to walk behind the fall but can climb up to the top to see it from above. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking!

Reynisfjara Beach . Iceland’s most spectacular black sand beach stretches over 5 kilometers (3 miles) with Reynisfjara Beach as the highlight. This volcanic beach with basalt columns, towering sea stacks, and caves has been ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Vík .   This charming village lies on the black sand beach. The cliffs are full of puffin nests and a charming small church sits on the hilltop. In summer, fields of purple lupins cover the hillside. This is an idyllic location for photos.

Skaftafell .   Its two panoramic glacier tongues, one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls, and a lush forest make Skaftafell a #1 holiday destination for locals and a must-visit for tourists.

Jökulsárlón and the Diamond Beach .   Most visitors agree that Jökulsarlón is probably the most beautiful spot in Iceland. Massive pieces of iceberg float across a vast lagoon towards the ocean, ending up on the black sand beach.

East Iceland

East Iceland is a wondrous destination. The region is impressively varied, sparsely populated, and very peaceful. Its rich culture and amazingly dramatic scenery await travelers. Given the long distance from Reykjavík, this is the region least frequented by tourists.

As you continue your travels along the Ring Road towards the east, you will leave behind the majestic Vatnajökull National Park. After driving through the desolate south coast, arriving in the town of Höfn feels as if you are entering a metropolis. Höfn is Iceland’s lobster capital, so make sure you stop for a taste.

Soon you will pass by some oddly shaped, highly scenic mountains that provide an amazing photo location. Then you will pass through the east fjords area where only a few tiny farms and villages remind you that people actually live here. You can take some detours in the area to visit some lovely fjord villages. From here, you will head north on a highly scenic drive between the mountains.

Stokksnes, Vestrahorn, and Eystrahorn:   These scenic mountains sit on a black sandy beach on opposite sides of a wide bay. These oddly shaped giants are surrounded by large grassy black sand dunes. On calm days, the mountains are mirrored in the water, making them a perfect photo stop.

Djúpivogur and Seyðisfjörður:   These cute little villages are absolutely worth a visit. Quaint, colorful, and amazingly peaceful places sitting in a magnificent landscape surrounded by unspoiled nature. Truly idyllic!

Lagarfljót:   Lagarfljót is a 53-kilometer (33 mile) long and 112-meter (367 feet) deep lake found near the town of Egilsstaðir. The lake is renowned for its serpent monster which was even caught on film a few years ago. Iceland’s largest forest is also found here, along with a unique arboretum which we highly recommend you visit.

Borgarfjörður Eystri:   This region is truly a hidden gem. Locals know it for its matchless natural beauty. Borgarfjörður is also home to the Queen of Elves who lives in the beautiful Elves’ Castle. To find out more about the elves, you should pay a visit to Borgarfjörður when traveling through the area.

North Iceland

The landscape is completely different in north Iceland. Coming from the east, you will pass by a wonderful lake with remarkable pseudocraters and extraordinary volcanic rock formations. Vivid birdlife, steaming geothermal fields, and an amazing geothermal bath awaits you.

Continuing your trip along Route 1, you will soon travel past a giant waterfall and arrive in the capital of the north, Akureyri. With around 20,000 inhabitants, this is the largest city outside of the capital area. In Akureyri, you can explore the rich culture, go on a whale watching tour, or take some detours to travel around the fjords to visit a few fjord villages such as Dalvík, Hofsós, and   Húsavík.

Lake Mývatn.   Lake Mývatn is known for its striking nature. It sits in an area full of incredibly unique geological attractions. Volcanoes, pseudocraters, and odd lava formations surround a lake which dotted with countless tiny islands.

Mývatn Nature Baths.   Enjoy a relaxing bath in the Mývatn Nature Bath. This spa is located beside Lake Mývatn. It is often referred to as the northern equivalent of the world-famous Blue Lagoon Spa as it has the same silica-rich, milky blue water as the famous Blue Lagoon.

Námafjall and Námaskarð.  There is a fascinating geothermal area on Námafjall Mountain. It is probably the most picturesque geothermal field of all, thanks to its vivid colors, furious fumaroles, wildly bubbling hot springs and hot pools.

Dimmuborgir:   This vast area of wild lava formations, volcanic caves, and oddly-shaped rocks is found near Lake Mývatn. Dimmuborgir has extremely dramatic views, making you feel as if you are in a maze or on another planet.

Goðafoss Waterfall:   Goðafoss is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. Visit the 30-meter (98 feet) wide waterfall and watch the water drop 12 meters (39 feet). According to historical notes, in the year 1000 AD, Goðafoss was strongly connected to the conversion of Iceland from paganism to Christianity.

Akureyri :   This is Iceland's second largest urban area, often called the capital of north Iceland. Akureyri is a lovely small city with vibrant culture and a wide selection of available activities.

Dalvík:   A cute fishing village famous for its incredibly high whale watching success rate which exceeds 99% in summer and 95% in winter. The village is surrounded by gorgeous scenery and has a very peaceful atmosphere.

Hofsós:   Another adorable village with an incredible fjord panorama, Hofsós is best known for its open-air geothermal swimming pool where you can swim in warm water while enjoying the thrilling view of the bay and its towering island.

West Iceland

Geographically close to Reykjavík yet full of remote, hidden gems, West Iceland will not disappoint you, regardless of if you start or end your Ring Road adventure here.

This wonderful region is famous for its Golden Circle. This fabled tour route features some of Iceland’s most visited natural attractions such as the geysers and the rift between the tectonic plates. The Golden Circle is not part of the Ring Road, however. Visiting these sites takes an additional detour.

If you have more time, another amazing detour option could be the beautiful Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This region has earned the nickname “miniature Iceland” for good reason. The peninsula features some of the most characteristic natural attractions and landscapes that Iceland is famous for. An impressive glacier-volcano, glorious waterfalls, vast lava fields, dramatic sea stacks, black sand beaches, and so much more.

Even if you do not have the time for whole day detours, there is still plenty to discover closer to the Ring Road in West Iceland.

Grábók Crater.  This 170-meter (558 foot) high, extremely picturesque, moss-covered volcanic crater is one of three craters that sit next to each other right next to the road. There are walking paths up to and around the craters. This is the perfect opportunity to take a break from driving and stretch your legs.

Deildartunguhver.  Europe's most powerful hot spring is located in West Iceland. Deildartunguhver produces 180 liters (47.5 gallons) per second of 97°C (206°F) water, which provides heating and hot water for the local communities within a   65-kilometer (40 miles) radius. Getting here takes a short, 18 kilometer (11 miles) detour from the Ring Road.

Hraunfossar Waterfalls.  If you continue the detour from Deildartunguhver towards the country’s interior, you will shortly arrive at the most unique waterfall in Iceland. Hraunfossar appears from the nothing as if by magic. It flows out of the ground and falls down into a vibrantly blue river. This outstanding beauty continues over 900 meters (984 yards).

Húsafell .  On the same detour, another few kilometers of driving takes you to Húsafell, a popular hiking and recreational area mainly known by locals. You can join a glacier or ice cave tour here as Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Lagjökull (the Long Glacier), is located quite close by. The area is full of amazing hiking trails and spectacular landscapes.

Hvalfjörður Fjord and the Glymur Waterfall .  When driving back to Reykjavík, you can either take the tunnel or drive around Hvalfjörður fjord, the whale fjord. If you have time, take the longer route and enjoy the beautiful scenery on this less-busy road. If you like hiking, this is your chance to go and explore Glymur, Iceland’s second highest waterfall. The hike takes about 3 to 3.5 hours in total.

Esja Mountain.  Just outside of Reykjavík sits the beautiful Mount Esja, providing a breathtaking backdrop to the capital area. The mountain range with its 914-meter (1000 yard) high peak is a popular hiking area for the Reykjavíkers. It offers both shorter and longer walking options for hikers of all levels. The mountain looks especially spectacular in June and July when purple, yellow, and white flowers cover its hills.

In winter, the chances of nice weather with good road and visual conditions are much lower than in summer. When you are traveling such a long way around the entire country, it is pretty likely that you will run into challenging conditions somewhere along the way.

You have to be prepared to drive on snowy or icy surfaces. You can expect snowstorms and strong winds, short daylight periods, and long bouts of darkness. Road closures are not uncommon. If this happens, you will have to wait in one location until the road is opened again.

If you are not used to   driving in winter   snow and strong winds, we highly recommend that you join a   guided tour . The local driver guides have a special driver’s license that must be renewed each year. Driver guides are specially trained for driving in the harsh Icelandic conditions and have a great amount of experience doing so.

If you do decide to rent a car, it is important to prepare accordingly. Choose a   4x4 with full insurance . Always check the   weather forecast ,   warnings , and   road conditions   before heading out. Check these sites multiple times per day.

It is good to always have an   extra blanket   and some   food   in your car, in case if you get stuck in the snow. Give yourself a   wide time frame , allowing yourself 1 or 2 extra days in case you face a road closure. Always   obey the speed limits , weather warnings, and closures. If you are looking for a driving adventure, summertime would probably be a better option.

For an Icelandic road trip, make sure you wear   warm and comfortable clothes . You will spend many hours in the car, so you will need to dress in layers. Your outer, or shell layer, should be completely   waterproof and windproof.   Rain and wind are something can be expected in Iceland daily.

Choose your insulation layer based on the season. In winter (between mid-September and mid-May), you will probably need a   warm down jacket . Meanwhile, in summer, a warm   polar fleece   or   knitted wool sweater   is enough.

Under the middle layer, wear comfortable,   long-sleeved undergarments . Choose a good fabric that keeps moisture away from your skin, to keep you dry at all times.   Avoid wearing cotton since   it absorbs moisture and does not dry fast. Fine   merino wool,   for instance, is a fabric that is quick drying and breathable.

When on a road trip you will exit and enter the car innumerable times per day. Therefore, make sure that your outer and middle layers are   easy to remove   when you get back in the car and quick to put back on when you head out again.

In winter, it is important to have a warm hat, scarf, and gloves. You will definitely be very thankful if you prepare ahead of time by getting some   reusable pocket warmers .

Make sure that your clothing is   comfortable   and avoid wearing items which are too tight. Wear   comfortable boots   that are   waterproof   but not too warm to wear in the car the whole day.   Leather boots and woolen socks are recommended   as they are waterproof and warm, but also breathable.   Avoid wearing high-heeled boots or sneakers.

Day 1 | The Golden Circle

Today you’ll be picked up after breakfast by our guide to start the journey around iceland. on this first day we’ll see all of the most popular sights of the golden circle area, with some unique twists to make the first day even more special. we head first to þingvellir national park & unesco heritage site to see the effects of constant tectonic movement in the midst of an area which is as rich in history as it is beautiful. from there we’ll go to friðheimar for an all inclusive lunch at this one of a kind restaurant. tomato ice cream, anyone next up is the erupting geyser, strokkur and its neighbour, the one and only geysir , along with the impressive gullfoss waterfall. then we start heading towards our south coast accommodation., where do we stay we love staying at hotel vos , skálakot manor hotel & hotel umi ..

Day 2 | South Coast Highlights

Today we drive along the entire south coast with its many beaches and waterfalls. we walk behind seljalandsfoss waterfall and try to get as close to skógafoss waterfall as possible before admiring the basalt columns and taking a walk on the black sand beach of reynisfjara . here we can have lunch before continuing our drive through the seaside town of vík. we go past the vast eldhraun lava field and hike along the edges of fjaðrárgljúfur gorge. as we reach vatnajökull national park the landscape starts to change dramatically due to the effect of europe’s largest glacier and volcano. a s we come into skaftafell nature reserve we will stop at one of the numerous outlet glaciers here for views over these icy giants. , option 1 |  the  icelandic lava show i n the town of  vík  where the locals will share tales of past eruptions before pouring  re-melted lava  over ice just metres from your face. a great family friendly experience on a cold day., option 2 |  take a  horse ride  on the famous  icelandic horse  with its smooth 5th gait. these docile animals are as friendly as they are fast. this is a great way to see iceland’s hidden landscape off the beaten path., option 3 | go for an exhilarating  atv tour  through rivers and remote wilderness., where do we stay there are many lovely accommodation options in the southeast, such as fosshotel glacier lagoon ..

Day 3 | Vatnajökull National Park & Eastfjords

Today is all about the ice we start the day at one of our favorite locations in iceland at jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where we witness the giant icebergs floating in the 8 km long lagoon. if you’re lucky, you’ll be greeted by one of the friendly and curious seals that live in the lagoon. afterwards we pop over to the diamond beach where the smaller broken icebergs wash up on shore., from here we drive through the eastfjords, and what a drive that is often hailed as the best views in iceland, the winding roads, towering mountains, steep cliffs and dramatic coast lines will certainly have you believing it. as you head north through the eastfjords , you’ll want to stop every 5 minutes with breathtaking views at every turn. don’t worry, your guide knows the best places to stop today., where do we stay in egilsstaðir you can stay at the lake hotel , icelandair hotel hérað or 1001 nótt to name a few..

Day 4 | Mývatn, Dettifoss & Optional Stuðlagil Canyon Hike

Heading into the north of iceland we drive through a desert like landscape. really quite different from what we have seen so far. but this apparent barren tundra is secretly bursting with life and activity. in the afternoon, we continue into the mystical landscape around lake mývatn making sure to stop at iceland’s most powerful waterfall, dettifoss . there, we explore the mars like landscape by námaskarð and hverir , with their steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pits. we’ll then peek into grjótagjá cave, made famous by game of thrones., what better way to end the day but at the recently opened forest lagoon , right on the towns edge with stunning views over eyjafjörður fjord., where do we stay we stay in the city centre of akureyri.

Day 5 | North Iceland

It’s time to depart the north and head west. this will be the longest driving day of the trip but don’t worry, you’ll have some great scenic views as we drive through rural iceland, passing through the small farming towns of northwest iceland while driving through the arctic coastway. we will stop by glaumbær farm where we can walk through and see the restored old turf houses and farms and get a sense of life in early times in iceland. before coming into our accommodation in the fishing village of stykkishólmur, located by breiðafjörður bay., where do we stay tonight we spend the night in the charming fishing village of stykkishólmur at hotel egilsen , or we can bypass stykkishólmur and head to hótel búðir..

Day 6 | The Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Today we explore snæfellsnes , a little miniature of iceland where you’ll see fjords, mountains, volcanoes, endless lava fields, glaciers, and dramatic coastal cliffs, all in one amazing peninsula. from stykkishólmur we make our headway around the peninsula made famous by jules verne and head to kirkjufell mountain, another game of thrones location known as arrow mountain, although in icelandic the name stands for church mountain. we explore the lava formations and black pebble beach of djúpalónssandur , no less impressive than the south coast shores. as we continue to go around snæfellsjökull glacier we head to the stunning lóndrangar basalt spires and the small village of arnarstapi , which is surrounded by impressive sea cliffs plummeting into the ocean and boasting its own guardian giant. we’ll make a quick photo stop by búðakirkja black church before heading to our accommodation for the night. , optional activities, from snæfellsnes peninsula we can join a whale watching tour out to breiðafjörður bay for the chance to see humpbacks, minke whale, pilot whales. to name a few, where do we stay stay a second night in the same hotel as the night before..

Day 7 | West Iceland & Hvammsvík Hot Pool

The lush countryside inland from breiðafjörður bay is famous for its beautiful waterfalls barnafoss and hraunfoss, and equally known for being the home to snorri sturluson who wrote the edda prone. there are many options for walks and hikes in this area through the lowland forested areas. by the end of the day, what better way but to end it at the newly opened hvammsvík hot springs, where the lagoons water levels move with the tide of the atlantic ocean., we’ll go to the newly opened hvammsvík hot pools, where do we stay, we come back to reykjavík after exploring west iceland today and stay in one of the hotels in the city.

Day 8 | Lava Tunnel, Volcanic Eruption Viewpoint & Blue Lagoon

The reykjanes peninsula and lava tunnel tour is all about the tectonic effects on the island. we spend the day visiting the  unesco global geopark of reykjanes peninsula  which is home to some incredible sights., we start with a visit to  raufarhólshellir , or more widely known as the  lava tunnel. this is one of the longest lava tubes in iceland. here we will explore the depths of this colourful lava tunnel. you will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption from 5200 years ago., afterwards, we will take part in a moderate hike to the newest lava field on the planet at the dormant volcano,  geldingadalur . we will walk around the lava field learning all about the eruption that started on the 19th of march 2021. there is  no hot lava on the surface these days but the dramatic landscape is still well worth the visit. on a clear day it’s possible to hike to the top of the nearby hill for a view of the volcanic crater . please note, although the volcano has stopped erupting it is not always possible or safe to visit the site. on these days we would add in other great spots on the reykjanes peninsula before finishing the day at the  blue lagoon ., where do we stay your guide will drop you off either at the luxurious silica by blue lagoon hotel. or, if you have a spare additional night you can opt for the 5 star retreat by blue lagoon (2 night minimum) for a unique treat to wrap up your stay in iceland. both these hotels give you access to their own secluded pools as well as access to the blue lagoon itself. if you are on a budget you can always opt to stay at the nearby northern lights inn once you’ve finished bathing in the lagoon. alternatively, we can head back to reykjavík ..

The Ice Cave tour was once in a lifetime experience. The tour started on time. The off-road journey to the snow line was a new adventure, and then to wear the crampons and hike to the entrance of the cave was exciting. Known as the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is famed for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, striking black sand beaches, and impressive glaciers. For such a small country, you'll have an incredible amount to see and do, plus a ton to organize when planning a trip.

With that in mind, we’ve made a list of the most important things to consider to help you start planning a trip to Iceland.

1. Decide how long to stay

The length of your trip is a key detail to decide first. How long you’ll spend in Iceland depends on how much time you can spare and what your travel goals are.

Shorter trips

Generally speaking, the longer the trip, the more you’ll be able to see. But if you only have a few days, it’s entirely possible to take in plenty of stunning landscapes and one-of-a-kind experiences.

Longer trips  

Got a week or longer? Venture out and explore even more of the country. 

Head to the south coast to marvel at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon , one of the region’s most popular destinations. If you’re up for it, take a boat tour to see the floating icebergs up close. On your way to the lagoon, you can stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall , where you’ll get the chance to walk behind the thundering waters.

2. Choose when to visit

With so many cool things to experience, there’s no bad time to visit Iceland. But maybe you’ll find that visiting in a particular season works best for you.

Visiting Iceland in summer
