Looking a little like the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the equally impressive India Gate is a magnificent stone arch built as a memorial to Indian soldiers killed in WWI. Although often overlooked, as most tourists head straight for the more famous Red Fort, Purana Qila (Old Fort) is well-worth squeezing into your Delhi travel itinerary. Boasting a past that stretches back some 2,500 years, much of the current impressive edifice dates back to the 1500s, although evidence of earlier structures dating back to the 3 rd century have been discovered.

The present structure played an important role in the region's affairs for centuries and was particularly influenced by the Muslim religion, as evidenced by building's such as the Qila-i-Kuna Mosque , a single-dome place of worship built in 1541. The site covers an area of two square kilometers, and you'll enjoy exploring its thick ramparts and three large gates, an especially impressive sight during the nightly illuminations.

The 200-acre Mehrauli Archaeological Park is also worthy of a visit and features numerous important structures, some of which date back more than 1,000 years. Highlights include the old ruins of Lal Kot, along with more recent evidence of occupation by the British during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Highlights include displays and memorabilia relating to both his life and death, including the room in which he stayed, left exactly as it was at the time, as well as the new Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum with historical records detailing his many achievements.

The All India War Memorial, popularly known as the India Gate, is located along the  Rajpath in  New Delhi . The imposing structure of India Gate is an awe-inspiring sight and is often compared to the Arch de Triomphe in France, the Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Arch of Constantine in Rome. India gate or The All India War Memorial is 42-metre-high giant gate made up of sandstone, built by prominent war memorial architect Edwin Lutyens in 1921. It is a war memorial situated at the eastern end of Kingsway that is the Rajpath, is memorial to martyrs of World War (1914-21). During the liberation period of Bangladesh, a structure comprising of a black marble plinth along with reversed L1A1 rifle, capped by a war helmet surrounded by four urns igniting the permanent light was constructed under the India gate. This structure is called the Amar Jawan Jyoti. It was inaugurated during the 23rd Republic day by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1972. Since then Amar jawan Jyoti has been serving as a gravestone dedicated to the known or unknown Indian martyrs, who lost their lives while defending the nation. The names of more than 13,000 Indian martyrs are inscribed on the monuments.

The present government is planning to build national war memorial near the India gate canopy which recently underwent the removal of George V statue which was later shifted to the coronation garden.

People visiting India Gate experiences true sense of patriotism. It is one of the best tourist attractions in New Delhi having widely spread children park and boating club. It serves as a best picnic spot. India gate is also famous for being the venue of several march and demonstrations.

History of the Attraction

The foundation of this war memorial was laid in the year 1921 in the month of February. The ceremony was attended by the Duke of Connaught, Delegates and Officers of the British Indian Army, Imperial Service Troops and the Viceroy. The construction of India Gate was a project initiated under the Imperial War Graves Commission, which was famous for building war tombstones of the era.

Visiting Timings

One can visit India Gate at any time of the day and night. Boating timings are limited from 2pm to 9pm. The light show starts from 7pm to 9pm.

There’s no entry fees, however boating costs varies.

India Gate In New Delhi – All You Need To Know

India is a beautiful country which has a lot to offer you. From its incredible culture to rich architectural wonders, there is a lot that you can explore in India. One such city which has a lot to amaze you is Delhi .

Delhi is the capital city of India and is an extremely massive metropolitan area. It is present in the north part of the country.

Delhi is one of the target cities when it comes to tourism in India. It houses some of the most famous buildings in India. However, in this article, we are not going to explore and learn about all of those building. Instead, we will restrict our focus and learn more about the India Gate.

What Is The India Gate?

Originally, “All India War Memorial” was the name for India Gate . This war memorial gate dedicates the 70,000 Indian soldiers. Especially, who lost their lives during the I World War and the II Anglo-Afghan War. These wars were held during the time period of 1914 to 1921. 

India gate is present astride Rajpath which is located on the East of ‘ceremonial axis’ of New Delhi , India. This ‘ceremonial axis’ was earlier known as the Kingsway. On the building of India gate, one can easily spot the names of around 13,300 servicemen including both commandoes and executives from the UK engraved on the war memorial.

Architecture Of India Gate

One of the most interesting facts about India gate is that its architecture actually showcases the triumphal arch’s structural style even though it is a war memorial. This is one of the reasons why the India gate is usually correlated with the Gateway of India in Mumbai. It also resembles the Arch of Constantine in Rome and Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Sir Edwin Lutyens was the personality who produced the design of the architectural structure of the India Gate. On February 12, 1931, India gate was first opened to the general public. It has a height of almost 42 meters and is officially located at Rajpath, India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi, 110001.

Another fun fact about the India Gate is that in 1972, after the Bangladeshi Liberation War, a simple and small structure was added to the war memorial. The gate primarily consisted of a black marble plinth. It further had a rifle, a helmet capping it, and four eternal flames on all its four sides. 

It was strategically built under the sky-high and magnificent memorial archway. This particular structure is known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti or the Flame of the Immortal Soldier. This structure has also served as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in India. 

India Gate is one of the largest was memorials in India. Before the parade, every single year the Prime Minister of India pays his or her respect at the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

History Of India Gate

Just like most famous war memorials in the world, India gate does not just hold strong sentimental value for all citizens of this country but also has a very rich and interesting history. This gate comes under the list of primary works of the Imperial War Graves Commission (I. W. G. C).

This commission had commenced into the world in December 1917. It was primarily dedicated to building memorials and war graves for soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. According to the official reports, the establishment of the All India War Memorial was set out on 10 February 1921 at exactly 4:30 pm.

The Duke of Connaught is a responsible man for this establishment. He was visiting then, in a soldierly ceremony which was quite solemn. Chief officers of the British Indian Army, the Viceroy, the Commander in Chief, and the Imperial Service Troops had attended this ceremony.

10 years after that ceremony, the All India War Memorial had been initiated on February 12, 1931, by the Viceroy Lord Irwin. This time period gave rise to many achievements and goal accomplishment. However, out of all the achievements, the two were most noteworthy. One is rail line being shifted to run along the Yamuna River. Secondly, opening of the New Delhi Railway Station in 1926.

Significant Tourist Spot In India

Currently, the India Gate is considered to be one of the most important attractions of tourism in India. In the evening, from 7 PM to 9:30 PM, this famous building is illuminated. Earlier, cars could pass through the India gate but eventually, due to growing traffic in the area, the government restricted it.

However, there is a very beautiful tradition of the republic day parade starting from the Rashtrapati Bhavan and passing through the India gate.

India gate situated on the eastern side of Rajpath salutes the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

The fort was built by the then King of Rajput, Rao Jodha, who established Jodhpur as the capital city of Marwar. The fort is a mighty work of architecture covering an area of 1,200 acres and rising about 122 meters above the surrounding area.

The outer view of this structure is even just the tip of the iceberg compared to the several palaces filled with stunning carvings and the magnificent courtyards that lie within.

Red Fort, Delhi

Gateway Of India, Mumbai

The Gateway of India is situated on the shores of the Colaba district of Mumbai, facing the Arabian Sea. This striking, arched monument stands at 85 feet (26 m) and was built in honor of the first British Emperor to visit India, King-Emperor George V in 1911.

The landmark also commemorates the gate where the last British troops used to exit India after the country gained independence. It’s a famous attraction in Mumbai and its location makes it more attractive as it has amazing views of the Arabian Sea and the nearby Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel.

Amer Fort, Rajasthan

Indian Gate, Delhi

One of the most remarkable structures in India with great historical essence is the Indian Gate located along Rajpath and featuring lush gardens.

The imposing arch gate, constructed with sandstone granite was built in honor of the more than 70,000 Indian and about 13,000 British soldiers who died in the First World War and some other wars that occurred between 1914 and 1921.

Unveiled in 1931, this landmark is also known as the All-Indian War Memorial, and it has the names of about 13,000 servicemen engraved on it.

Victoria Memorial, Kolkata

Mysore Palace, Mysore

Qutub Minar, Delhi

The minaret was built on the ancient ruins of Lal Kot, with red sandstone and marble, highlighting the magnificence of India's architectural heritage. The complex was built in the 11th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

Centuries after it was built, this architectural wonder has continued to attract hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world every year.

Taj Mahal, Agra

The complex was built by Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal and to house her tomb. It eventually became the final resting place of the emperor himself. It is said that it took up to 20,000 artisans who worked day and night to build this monument.

Today, the monument is admired all over the world today for its reflection of the great intelligence and hard work of Indian artisans, laborers, and all who contributed to its building.

Elon Musk shows why India can’t take China-plus-one narrative for granted

• The world’s discomfort with China, Washington-Beijing geopolitical tensions, and trade and tech wars had begun to lull India into thinking that all is at last in place for our manufacturing sector to take off

Barely a week after Elon Musk excused himself from a much-publicized trip to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tesla’s boss touched down in China for an unannounced visit on Monday. Earlier, announcing that he would not be landing in Delhi, Musk cited "very heavy Tesla obligations" as the reason.

China is Tesla’s second largest market and home to its first gigafactory outside the US. Musk mentioned on X, formerly Twitter, his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. According to Reuters, discussions included the deployment of Tesla’s full self-driving software and data use agreements in China.

“I have to say that I also have a lot of fans in China. Well, the feelings are reciprocated," Musk said during his trip to Beijing.

The maverick entrepreneur’s surprise decision to ditch an India visit and instead show up in China ought to be a red flag for New Delhi. That there is going to be a perennial ‘ China plus one ’ advantage can no longer be taken for granted.

The world’s discomfort with China, the Washington-Beijing geopolitical tensions, the trade and tech wars, had begun to lull India into thinking that all is at last in place for our manufacturing sector to take off: The government’s heavy-duty infrastructure push, globally competitive corporate tax rates, a variety of schemes for attracting investments. And if being as competitive as China was tough still, the geopolitics aligned neatly to give India an edge.

After the disruption in global supply chains during Covid-19 created supply-side glitches triggering shortages and inflation in input costs, and its fallout, a cost of living crisis in the western countries, Washington began to urge companies to reduce dependency on China.

In 2022, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen coined the epithet ‘friendshoring’ for this push to relocate supply chains to friendly countries – something that was already being called the ‘China plus one’ strategy in global business management circles. Beijing’s aggressive zero-covid policies were mostly responsible for the global supply pain and uncertainties.

The shifting geopolitical narrative suited India well. New Delhi, which had already announced a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in 2021 to attract foreign direct investments in specific industries, especially from global electronics manufacturing giants, now hoped to capitalize on the worsening geopolitical tensions between the US and China.

This was an expensive bet to make: Under the PLI scheme, New Delhi gave Apple and Samsung and their contract manufacturers more than ₹ 4,400 crore of taxpayer money in 2023, that’s just one year, for making smartphones in India.

But the expectation was that companies benefiting from the PLIs would scale up manufacturing in a matter of years, allowing India to take on China as the world’s factory, thus, the cost to the budget (at the expense of other spending heads) would have been justified.

The expectation with the PLIs was that beneficiary companies would rapidly expand their manufacturing capabilities, allowing India to take on China as the world’s factory. This scale-up was seen as justifying the significant budget expenditures, at the expense of other spending heads.

Has New Delhi been over-optimistic?

There is evidence that supply chains are being relocated out of China. Official data shows that while the imports of mobile phones from China to the US continued to increase at 10-15%, the imports from the rest of the world grew by over 70%.

However, the data also shows that other countries, especially Vietnam, and not India, are gaining from the ‘China plus one’ driven reconfiguration of global supply chains.

While it is true that many of Apple’s subcontractors have set up manufacturing units in India, and electronics exports out of the country have risen seven-fold since 2018, Vietnam has grabbed a much larger share of the business relocating from China. Samsung now exports from India to a couple of dozen countries, but from Vietnam, it exports to no less than 120 countries.

Data shows that US companies are picking Vietnam over India to relocate their supply chains out of China. Vietnam’s electronics exports to the US rose from $12.1 billion in 2018 to $51.2 billion in 2023. India’s rose from $1.3 billion to $8.9 billion. This means that of the incremental non-Chinese imports to the US, 28% are now from Vietnam, and only 5.5% are from India.

In other words, data shows that India has had limited success in capitalising on the “China plus one" window of opportunity. Manufacturing remains stuck at under 15% of GDP, unchanged over the last two decades.

Musk’s aborted plan to visit India followed New Delhi’s announcement of lower import tariffs last month. Musk had been lobbying for lower import tariffs for Tesla EVs. (The company has been selling fewer than it is producing and desperately needs new export markets.)

The government gave in at last when it announced lower import tariffs as part of a quid-pro-quo policy that requires car companies to commit to invest at least $500 million and begin manufacturing in India within three years to qualify for the concessional duty rates of 15%, down from 70-100% (depending on the import price).

That the government had to accede to Musk’s demands for concessional import tariffs shows that even nine years after Modi gave the slogan of ‘Make In India’, India is still not a natural choice for global giants to locate their manufacturing plants. New Delhi must still sweeten invitations to make in India – whether with lower import tariffs or subsidies, such as by way of PLIs.

Meanwhile, China isn’t helplessly watching the “China plus one" narrative being drummed up.

President Xi Jinping’s response to China’s economic troubles post-Covid that many commentators called – prematurely perhaps – the end of its economic miracle has been to double down on Beijing’s plans to dominate the industries of tomorrow.

China has embarked on a plan to lay the base for taking its technology-powered, low-cost manufacturing game to the next level. This strategy is built around what the Chinese are calling “new productive forces". It aims to accelerate advanced manufacturing industries capable of creating high-productivity jobs while also making China self-sufficient against American aggression by reducing dependence on US technology.

It is thus a plan to both reinvent the Chinese economy while also altering the balance of economic power in the world, challenging the superpower status of the US.

For this, China has set its economy on a path of mass production of electric cars, batteries, biomanufacturing and the drone-based economy. According to estimates published in the FT, Beijing’s annual investment in “new productive forces" is now a whopping $1.6trn, double than what it was just five years ago and nearly half of the total business investment in the US in 2023.

World leaders, including Yellen, who said as much on her recent visit to China, worry that with this all-new manufacturing push, Beijing will flood the global economy with mass-produced, low-cost high-tech goods, stealing jobs, incomes and growth from other countries.

It’s anybody’s guess how quickly Beijing will succeed in putting an end to the “China plus one" narrative. What should worry New Delhi is that that window of opportunity may shut even before India can take full advantage of it, as the data above shows.
