95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

65 Beautiful Quotes to Wish Someone a Safe Journey

Know someone who is about to set off on holiday or go abroad? Here are 65 creative and thoughtful ways to say ‘Have a safe trip’. Copy and paste these safe journey wishes to show them that you care.

Saying goodbye to someone who’s about to depart on a journey can be difficult. Even as a writer, I often struggle to find the right words to say.

These days, I’m usually on the receiving end of goodbyes – but I’ve had to say my fair share of farewells, too.

While ‘Have a safe journey’ will sometimes suffice, quoting a simple message, a beautiful saying or even a traditional blessing is an easy way to make a farewell more meaningful and memorable.

I’ve searched books, song lyrics and inspirational sites to come up with this list of 65 safe journey wishes . You can say these out loud, or you can copy and paste your favourite into an email, use it in a caption on social media, or better still, jot it down on a hand-written note!

  • The best quotes about travelling with friends
  • The best quotes about travelling alone
  • The best quotes for travelling with family

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

  • Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
  • Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.
  • Make a time to speak. If you know you’ll hear their voice when the flight lands or the train pulls in, you’ll feel much better about sending them off.
  • Remember, the person travelling is excited for the journey ahead – but they’re probably just as emotional as you!
  • Reassure them that you’ll be thinking of them. These safe journey wishes are perfect for just that.
  • It’s not only about what you say, it’s also what you do. Depending on your relationship, a warm hug or a hand on the shoulder can mean a lot.

Short and sweet safe journey wishes

These safe journey messages are thoughtful but to the point. They’re especially good for saying a quick goodbye on social media or by text message.

  • Best wishes for a safe, happy and fulfilling journey.
  • May the road be kind to you.
  • Go safe, move safe, leave safe, home safe.

A quote graphic.

This goodbye message comes from a Middle English phrase meaning ‘May you prosper’.

When NASA astronaut John Glenn made the first manned orbital flight in 1962, mission control used the word ‘Godspeed’ to wish him a safe journey.

  • Catch you on the flip side!

We often use this friendly way of saying goodbye in Australia. It comes from late-night radio DJs, who would use the phrase before they put on a vinyl record.

Listeners knew they wouldn’t hear from the DJ again until the record had played through and they had ‘flipped’ the vinyl to the B side.

  • Stay out of trouble!

A cheeky way of saying ‘Have a safe journey’, appropriate for someone you know well!

  • Smooth sailing!

First coined in the 14th Century, this phrase prophesied calm waters free from rough waves for someone who was about to set sail on the high seas.

It doesn’t just apply to water travel – nowadays, it can be used as a generic saying to wish someone a breezy journey.

  • “May the air be clear, your flight smooth, the plane ride safe, and the sky blue!” – Unknown
  • “May angels fly with you wherever you roam and guide you back safely to family and home.” – Traditional Irish blessing

Introduction

Traveling overseas is an exciting adventure, but the high cost of international roaming can be a major concern. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, staying connected is essential. The ability to receive text messages while abroad is crucial for staying in touch with family, friends, and colleagues. However, traditional methods of receiving text messages through your mobile network can be expensive due to international roaming charges.

Luckily, there are alternative ways to receive text messages overseas without incurring hefty roaming fees. In this article, we will explore these methods, allowing you to stay connected effortlessly and cost-effectively.

By leveraging internet-based messaging apps, local SIM cards, SMS forwarding to email, virtual numbers, and pocket Wi-Fi devices, you can receive text messages while traveling abroad, without breaking the bank. Each method has its advantages and may suit your specific needs depending on your destination, duration of stay, and level of usage.

So, let’s dive in and discover the various options available to receive text messages while overseas without worrying about exorbitant roaming charges.

Understanding International Roaming

Before exploring alternative methods of receiving text messages overseas, it’s important to understand what international roaming is and how it can affect your mobile usage abroad.

International roaming is a service that allows you to use your mobile phone outside of your home country by connecting to a foreign mobile network. When you travel abroad, your mobile network provider partners with local networks to provide you with voice, data, and text messaging services.

While international roaming offers convenience, it often comes with exorbitant charges. Mobile network providers charge high rates for making and receiving calls, sending and receiving text messages, and using data while roaming. These charges can quickly add up, leaving you with a hefty bill when you return home.

When it comes to receiving text messages, some mobile network providers charge fees, even if you don’t open or read the message. This can be particularly problematic if you receive a significant number of texts while traveling.

It’s important to check with your mobile network provider to understand their specific international roaming charges and policies. They may offer travel plans or temporary options to reduce costs, but these are often limited and may not be cost-effective depending on your usage requirements.

Fortunately, there are alternative methods that can help you avoid these high roaming charges while still allowing you to receive incoming text messages. Let’s explore some of these methods in detail.

Alternative Ways to Receive Text Messages Overseas

When it comes to receiving text messages while overseas, there are several alternative methods that can help you stay connected without incurring exorbitant roaming charges. Let’s explore these methods:

  • Using Internet-Based Messaging Apps: With the widespread availability of internet connectivity, utilizing messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook Messenger can be a cost-effective way to receive text messages. These apps use data or Wi-Fi connections to send and receive messages, allowing you to stay in touch with your contacts without relying on traditional SMS.
  • Getting a Local SIM Card: If you’re planning an extended stay in a foreign country, getting a local SIM card can be a practical option. By switching out your home country’s SIM card with a local one, you can access the local mobile network’s services at local rates. This includes the ability to receive text messages without incurring costly roaming charges.
  • Forwarding SMS to Email: Another method to receive text messages while overseas is to set up SMS forwarding to your email address. This can be done through various online services or by configuring your mobile device’s settings. Incoming text messages will be automatically forwarded to your email, allowing you to read and respond to them at your convenience, even if you don’t have access to a mobile network.
  • Virtual Numbers: Virtual numbers are temporary or virtual phone numbers that can be used to receive text messages online. Services like Google Voice or Skype provide virtual numbers, allowing you to receive SMS on your computer or mobile device via their apps or websites. This method can be especially useful if you don’t want to get a local SIM card or use internet-based messaging apps.
  • Renting a Pocket Wi-Fi Device: Renting a pocket Wi-Fi device is a convenient option if you require consistent internet connectivity while abroad. These devices provide a portable Wi-Fi network that you can connect your mobile device to, allowing you to use internet-based messaging apps and receive text messages without relying on a mobile network’s roaming services.

Each of these alternative methods offers its own advantages and considerations based on your specific needs and circumstances. It’s important to evaluate the costs, availability, and compatibility of these options before deciding on the best approach for receiving text messages while overseas.

Method 1: Using Internet-Based Messaging Apps

In today’s interconnected world, internet-based messaging apps have become increasingly popular as a convenient and cost-effective way to communicate. By utilizing these apps, you can receive text messages while overseas without incurring high roaming charges. Here’s how:

1. Select an App: There are various messaging apps available, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook Messenger. Choose the app that you and your contacts prefer and ensure that everyone has it installed on their devices.

2. Connect to Wi-Fi or Data: To use these messaging apps, you’ll need either Wi-Fi or a data connection. Connect to a Wi-Fi network whenever possible to avoid using precious data or incurring additional charges. However, if Wi-Fi is not available, ensure that you have a suitable data plan or access to a reliable data network to use the messaging app.

3. Verify Your Phone Number: During the setup process, you will typically need to verify your phone number by entering a code sent via SMS or a phone call. Ensure that you have access to your mobile number for this verification step.

4. Sync Contacts: After verifying your phone number, the app will usually prompt you to sync your contacts. This allows you to see which of your contacts are also using the same messaging app, making it easier to communicate with them.

5. Start Messaging: Once the setup is complete, you can start sending and receiving text messages through the app. These messages are sent over the internet, so they won’t incur any SMS charges or roaming fees.

6. Enable Push Notifications: To ensure that you don’t miss any incoming messages, make sure to enable push notifications for the messaging app. This way, you will be instantly notified when you receive a new message, even if the app is not actively open on your device.

Using internet-based messaging apps not only allows you to receive traditional text messages without roaming charges but also provides additional functionalities like voice and video calling, sending multimedia files, and creating group chats. Keep in mind that both you and your contacts will need to have the same messaging app installed for seamless communication.

However, it’s important to note that internet-based messaging apps require an internet connection, either through Wi-Fi or data. Therefore, it’s advisable to connect to secure and trusted networks, especially when accessing private or sensitive information through these apps.

By utilizing internet-based messaging apps while overseas, you can not only stay connected but also enjoy a wide range of communication features without incurring exorbitant roaming charges.

Method 2: Getting a Local SIM Card

If you’re planning an extended stay in a foreign country, getting a local SIM card can be a practical and cost-effective way to receive text messages overseas. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Check Phone Compatibility: Before getting a local SIM card, ensure that your mobile device is unlocked and compatible with the local network. Some phones are locked to specific carriers, preventing the use of other SIM cards. If your phone is unlocked, it can accept SIM cards from different carriers.

2. Research Local Mobile Networks: Identify the local mobile network providers in the country you’re visiting. Research their coverage, rates, and available prepaid SIM card options. Consider factors like network coverage, data package offerings, and the ability to receive text messages on their network.

3. Purchase a SIM Card: Once you arrive at your destination, head to a local mobile network provider’s store or authorized retailer and purchase a prepaid SIM card. They are typically available at airports, shopping centers, or dedicated mobile network stores. Make sure to bring your passport as some countries require identification to purchase a SIM card.

4. Insert the SIM Card: Turn off your phone and insert the new local SIM card into the SIM card slot. Follow the instructions provided by the mobile network provider or refer to your device’s manual for guidance on how to insert the SIM card correctly.

5. Activate and Top Up: Once the SIM card is inserted, follow the activation instructions provided by the mobile network provider. This may involve calling a specific number, sending an SMS, or using an online activation portal. Additionally, you may need to top up your SIM card with credit to make calls and receive text messages.

6. Update Contacts: Inform your contacts of your new local number so that they can reach you using this number while you’re abroad. You can update your contact information in your phone’s address book or in the contact list of your messaging app.

By getting a local SIM card, you’ll have a local phone number and access to the local mobile network’s services at affordable rates. This allows you to receive text messages without incurring expensive roaming charges. Additionally, you’ll have the benefit of making local calls and using data at local rates, which can significantly reduce your overall communication expenses while traveling.

Keep in mind that using a local SIM card means that your home country’s SIM card will not be active. As a result, you will not be able to receive text messages on your home country’s number. However, you can set up call forwarding or use internet-based messaging apps to stay connected with individuals who don’t have your new local number.

Before purchasing a local SIM card, compare different mobile network providers to find the best option that suits your needs in terms of network coverage, rates, and packages. By getting a local SIM card, you can enjoy the convenience of receiving text messages and using mobile services at affordable local rates while traveling overseas.

Method 3: Forwarding SMS to Email

Forwarding SMS to email is a convenient method to receive text messages overseas without relying on a mobile network. By setting up SMS forwarding, you can receive your incoming text messages directly in your email inbox. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Choose an SMS Forwarding Service: Several online services offer SMS forwarding to email. Research and select a reputable service that suits your needs. Some popular options include Google Voice, MightyText, and SMS Forwarding.

2. Set up SMS Forwarding: The specific setup process may vary depending on the service you choose. Typically, you’ll need to sign up for an account, provide your mobile number, and follow the instructions to enable SMS forwarding to your email address. This may involve entering a verification code sent to your mobile number or configuring forwarding settings.

3. Configure Email Settings: In the SMS forwarding service settings, ensure that you have correctly configured your email address to receive forwarded messages. Double-check the email address and any specific preferences or filters you want to apply, such as labeling the forwarded messages or sending them to a specific folder.

4. Test the Forwarding: Send a test text message to your mobile number to confirm that the SMS forwarding is working correctly. You should receive the forwarded message in your email inbox soon after.

5. Manage and Respond to Messages: Once you start receiving forwarded SMS in your email, you can manage them like any other email. Read the messages, respond to them, and organize them as needed. Keep in mind that any replies you send will be sent from your email address rather than your mobile number.

By setting up SMS forwarding to email, you can conveniently receive and manage text messages while overseas, regardless of your location or mobile network coverage. This method eliminates the need for a mobile network connection and allows you to access your messages from any device with an internet connection.

It’s important to note that SMS forwarding services may have limitations and potential issues, such as delays in forwarding or occasional compatibility issues with certain senders. Additionally, ensure the security of your email account, as forwarded text messages may contain personal or sensitive information.

If you anticipate receiving a large volume of text messages while traveling, be mindful of any potential email storage limitations or additional charges associated with receiving forwarded messages. Monitor your email storage to ensure that you have enough space for incoming messages.

Overall, SMS forwarding to email can be a practical solution to receive text messages overseas, providing flexibility and convenience without incurring roaming charges or relying on a mobile network connection.

Method 4: Virtual Numbers

Virtual numbers offer another alternative to receive text messages while overseas without relying on traditional mobile network services. A virtual number is a temporary or virtual phone number that can be used for receiving text messages online. Here’s how you can use virtual numbers:

1. Choose a Virtual Number Service: There are various online services that provide virtual numbers, such as Google Voice, Skype, or TextNow. Research and select a reputable service that offers virtual numbers for the country you’re traveling to.

2. Set up an Account: Sign up for an account with the virtual number service of your choice. Follow the instructions to create an account and verify your identity if required. Some services may require a payment for virtual number usage or additional features.

3. Select a Virtual Number: Once you’ve set up your account, choose a virtual number from the available options. Check whether the virtual number corresponds to the country where you want to receive text messages. Some services offer multiple countries to choose from.

4. Configure Number Forwarding: In the settings of your virtual number account, set up call forwarding or SMS forwarding to your current mobile number or email address. This will ensure that any incoming text messages to the virtual number will be redirected to your desired contact method.

5. Inform Contacts of Your Virtual Number: To receive text messages on your virtual number, let your contacts know about the number before you travel. Provide them with your virtual number and advise them to use it to reach you while you’re abroad.

6. Receive and Respond to Messages: Once you start receiving text messages on your virtual number, you can access them through the virtual number service’s app or website. Read and respond to the messages as you would with any other text message.

Virtual numbers provide a flexible and temporary solution for receiving text messages overseas. They allow you to maintain communication without the need for a local SIM card or a mobile network connection. However, make sure to check the terms and conditions, as well as the costs associated with using virtual numbers, as they may vary depending on the service provider.

It’s important to note that virtual numbers may have limitations, such as a limited lifespan, availability only in certain countries, or potential compatibility issues with some SMS providers. Additionally, virtual numbers may not support features like voice calling or receiving calls.

Overall, virtual numbers offer a practical and convenient way to receive text messages while traveling overseas, providing an alternative to traditional mobile network services.

Method 5: Renting a Pocket Wi-Fi Device

If you require consistent internet connectivity while overseas, renting a pocket Wi-Fi device can be an excellent option. These portable devices create a local Wi-Fi network that you can connect your mobile device to, allowing you to use internet-based messaging apps and receive text messages without relying on a mobile network’s roaming services. Here’s how you can rent a pocket Wi-Fi device:

1. Research Rental Providers: Look for reputable pocket Wi-Fi rental providers in the country you are visiting. Check their coverage, rental packages, prices, and customer reviews to find a reliable provider that suits your needs. Some popular providers include Travelwifi, TEP Wireless, and Roaming Man.

2. Place an Order: Visit the rental provider’s website or contact their customer support to place an order for a pocket Wi-Fi device. Specify the dates and duration of your rental, as well as any additional services or accessories you may need, such as extra batteries or a charger.

3. Receive the Device: Depending on the rental provider’s policies, the pocket Wi-Fi device can either be delivered to your home address before your trip or picked up at a designated location upon your arrival at the destination country. Follow the instructions provided by the rental provider to receive the device.

4. Activate and Connect: Once you have the pocket Wi-Fi device, follow the setup instructions provided by the rental provider to activate it. Typically, you’ll need to turn on the device, connect your mobile device to its Wi-Fi network, and enter the provided password. Once connected, your mobile device will have access to the internet through the pocket Wi-Fi device.

5. Use Internet-Based Messaging Apps: With the pocket Wi-Fi device, you can now use internet-based messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, to send and receive text messages. As the device provides a stable and reliable internet connection, you’ll be able to receive text messages in real-time without relying on a mobile network’s roaming services.

6. Return the Device: At the end of your rental period, return the pocket Wi-Fi device to the rental provider as per their instructions. Some providers offer prepaid return envelopes for easy and convenient return shipping. Ensure that you return the device on time to avoid any additional charges.

Renting a pocket Wi-Fi device offers you the flexibility to stay connected and receive text messages while traveling abroad, regardless of your location or mobile network coverage. It also allows you to use other internet-dependent services on your mobile device, such as browsing the web, accessing maps, or making online bookings.

Keep in mind that pocket Wi-Fi devices require battery power to operate, so make sure to manage your usage and keep the device charged. Also, be aware of any fair usage policies or data limits that may apply to your rental package, as excessive usage could result in reduced internet speeds or additional charges.

Overall, renting a pocket Wi-Fi device provides a reliable and convenient solution for staying connected and receiving text messages overseas, making it an excellent option for travelers who require constant internet access during their trips.

Staying connected and receiving text messages while overseas is essential for maintaining communication with loved ones, colleagues, and acquaintances. However, the high cost of international roaming charges can make this seemingly simple task a costly endeavor. Luckily, there are alternative methods available to receive text messages overseas without breaking the bank.

Most Americans are now accustomed to always being online, with a majority of Americans (53%) admitting to regularly using their phone in bed before going to sleep, according to a 2021 study by Contentsquare, an analytics company. For some, the thought of disconnecting to go on an international trip may seem like a dream, but that idea might be a nightmare for others.

Those who want to stay connected have many options for data and text messages while overseas — from using international cell phone plans to getting a local SIM or eSIM card. Here are our tips on the best ways to use your cell phone while abroad.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

1. Sign up for Google Fi

Google Fi is a virtual cell phone service provider. That means that rather than owning its own towers, it partners with local cell phone providers to provide cell, data and text services. And Google Fi didn't just stop at partnering with U.S. cell phone providers. Google Fi provides service in over 200 countries, making it incredibly convenient for frequent international travelers.

When you land in an international country, you can simply turn off airplane mode and use your phone just like you do at home. You'll get unlimited free texting, and data costs the same as when you're back home and using Google Fi. The only thing that can cost extra is phone calls. You'll pay 20 cents per minute when calling overseas or traveling overseas. You'll pay this same rate whether you're calling friends or family back home or calling a hotel in the next country on your itinerary.

The downside to Google Fi: depending on the plan you choose, data prices can be quite high compared to other cell phone service options while you're in the U.S.

2. Get free overseas data using T-Mobile and Sprint

The budget option for staying connected while overseas is to use T-Mobile or Sprint as your cell phone provider. Many plans offered by these providers come with free text and data while traveling overseas. However, you get what you pay for when it comes to data speeds.

T-Mobile customers with can get unlimited 2G data, unlimited texting and calls costing 25 cents per minute across 210 destinations if they have the following plans:

New Classic.

Select Choice.

Simple Choice.

Don't expect to be able to do much on 2G data, as it’s only around twice the speed of dial-up internet. If you want faster data speeds, you'll need to purchase an International Pass that includes a limited amount of data and unlimited calling over a set number of days.

Similarly, Sprint customers get free text messages and 2G data and 25 cents per minute calling when traveling to more than 200 destinations. As with T-Mobile, Sprint customers can purchase data packages that allow 4G/LTE data roaming for as little as $5 per day.

3. Buy a local SIM card in your destination

Seasoned international travelers may remember when getting a local SIM card was the only way of staying connected while overseas. But even now, with all of the alternatives that we have, getting a local SIM card can still be a great option. Say you're staying in a country or region for an extended period. A local SIM card might be the best option to make local calls at affordable rates.

Depending on where you go, a local SIM card could be the most economical option. For example, when I visited Vietnam in January 2019, airport vendors offered local SIM cards with unlimited LTE data for just $8. This was cheaper than paying for even 1GB of data using Google Fi. So, I alternated between using this local SIM card for data and Google Fi for text messages.

4. Utilize an eSIM card

eSIM cards are a high-tech solution to getting a local number without having to hunt down a SIM card in your destination. Rather than getting a physical SIM card, you can purchase and download an eSIM on your phone to connect to cell networks and get data while overseas.

Tons of providers sell eSIMs online with options and prices depending on where you're going and how much you'll need to use your phone. So, make sure to dig around and check reviews before purchasing. But, let's take a look at one provider to show you generally how it works.

Airalo sells a variety of eSIMs that cover a combined 190+ countries and regions. You can search for eSIMs by country or region, or you can purchase a global eSIM that covers 87 countries.

travelling abroad messages

Say you're heading to Europe and want to have data for navigating around the cities you're visiting. Airalo currently offers six European eSIM options:

1GB of data valid for 7 days for $5.

3GB of data valid for 30 days for $13.

5GB of data valid for 30 days for $20.

10GB of data valid for 30 days for $37.

50GB of data valid for 90 days for $100.

100GB of data valid for 180 days for $185.

As you can see, you can drop the price to just $4 per GB by buying 5GB of data or just $2 per GB by buying 50GB of data. That's very affordable compared to options like Google Fi — which can cost up to $10 per GB. However, you generally won't have access to SMS text messages through eSIMs. One option is to switch between using an eSIM for data and either Google Fi, Sprint or T-Mobile for text messages.

Airalo succinctly spells out the process that you'll need to go through when purchasing any type of eSIM. Generally you'll need to:

Download the provider's app.

Purchase the eSIM.

Install the eSIM.

Then activate the eSIM once you're ready to start using it.

travelling abroad messages

One major restriction to this option: you'll need to have a phone that supports eSIMs. Also, you'll want to have some technical knowhow. As I've learned from experience, setting up an eSIM can be much harder than the Airalo screenshots make it seem.

5. Pay for an international plan add-on

If you want to use your phone number to call and text while overseas — and you don't have Google Fi, T-Mobile or Sprint — you're likely going to need to purchase an international add-on to your plan. The rates and options for these types of services are going to vary between cell phone providers. Let's look at Verizon's options as an example.

All unlimited Verizon plans include free talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada. Just beware that data speeds are reduced to 2G speeds after 0.5 GB per day. For travels outside the U.S., Mexico and Canada, you have two options:

For $10 per day, TravelPass will let you use your phone like you do at home with unlimited talk, text and data in over 185 countries. Get the International Monthly Plan for $100 per month to get a package of minutes, data and text messages for use overseas.

If you're looking for the best way to use your cell phone abroad

The right solution is going to depend on what cell phone service you use in the U.S., where you're going and how much data you'll need. If you just want basic data to keep up on emails and search directions, using T-Mobile or Sprint can save you from having to pay when traveling overseas.

However, if you want high-speed data, you'll want to look into options like eSIMs or purchasing a local SIM card. And for those who want the simplicity of using their cell phone just like at home no matter where they go, Google Fi or an international add-on plan can be an excellent option.

How to Handle Two-Factor Authentication When Travelling

Imagine this: you’re lounging in an exotic location overseas, sipping on your preferred chilled beverage of choice, and you decide to get caught up on a little personal banking.

When you go to login to your account so you can pay off one of your many Miles & Points-generating premium credit cards, your heart sinks when you receive an automated message that says something like “Login not recognized – we’re sending a code to your phone”.

In situations such as this, you’ve just run across two-factor authentication (2FA), which can be a difficult hurdle to overcome. Let’s go through the methods best suited to deal with two-factor authentication when travelling.

What Is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication is a security feature which has taken digital technology platforms by storm in recent years.

Essentially, it’s a system which is designed to ensure that the only person who can access your personal information is, in fact, you. It accomplishes this by placing an extra barrier to accessing this information by way of a second factor to authenticate your identity.

The first factor is typically something that you input, which could be a password, fingerprint, or even facial recognition. With data breaches occurring regularly, using a single factor to access accounts is becoming less and less possible, especially with sensitive data.

The second factor almost always comes in the form of a code which you need to enter into the platform you’re trying to access before being able to complete your login or conduct transactions.

The code is usually delivered to a secondary device or service provider that only you have access to, typically via one of five methods: a phone call, a text message, an email, a push notification through your financial institution’s mobile app, or an authenticator app.

This system of authentication will usually trigger when you try to access your account from an unrecognized location, such as a new device, IP address, or web browser. When travelling, we find ourselves in new places quite often, so encountering 2FA isn’t at all unusual.

Basically, 2FA introduces a trade-off of a minor inconvenience for increased security. How minor that inconvenience is depends on your tech-savviness, your willingness to jump through hoops that aren’t always the most user-friendly, or as is often the case for us intrepid globetrotters, how reliably you can receive an access code on your second device or service provider.

How to Use Two-Factor Authentication Abroad

2FA is a reality across many modern digital technology platforms, and Canadian banking institutions are no exception. Let’s talk about a few ways that you can deal with it in the most effective way possible, both at home and abroad.

Push Notifications

The first method is to use your trusted smartphone device. Many financial institutions conduct 2FA by sending a push notification to the bank’s mobile app, and these apps register the identity of your individual device.

This means that even if you login to one of your bank accounts from a foreign IP address, or while using a SIM card not attached to your main phone number, you’ll be fine as long as you’re using your trusted device. This is also why it’s important not to reset your phone or clear saved data whenever possible before leaving home, especially with the login for your bank’s mobile app.

Canadian Phone Number

The second method to overcoming 2FA while travelling is to always have your Canadian SIM card on hand so you can be ready to receive calls or SMS texts to your Canadian phone number.

When travelling, you’re likely to want to avoid Canada’s ridiculously high roaming fees in favour of far more economic local phone providers or e-SIMs . However, these numbers will not be attached to any of your banking information, and cannot be used for 2FA purposes.

After all, I’m sure we’d all feel a bit less safe if verification codes could be sent to random numbers tracing from Timbuktu!

Therefore, it’s wise to be able to slot in your Canadian SIM if you encounter an emergency. Pay your daily roaming charge to conduct your transactions, and then take it out and continue saving for the rest of your trip.

This method can be quite costly if you’re not careful, but if you’re in a bind, it’s likely worth the price of admission. Many Canadian phone providers deliver inbound SMS text messages for free around the world, so just watch that you don’t take or make calls, send outbound messages, or tap into your roaming data.

Of course, this is made much easier if you have a phone with dual-SIM capability, allowing you to seamlessly switch between reasonable roaming rates and your convenient Canadian cellular carrier.

Virtual Phone Number

The third method for overcoming 2FA, and one which is imperfect, is to pay for a virtual phone number, such as a premium subscription on the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service Fongo .

This isn’t a guaranteed way to receive calls or texts for two-factor authentication purposes, but there have been plenty of reports from people using this app to receive both calls and text messages when sent a 2FA message from their bank while abroad.

At $9.99 (CAD) a month, this is an affordable alternative which can work on occasion; however, as Fongo itself notes , not every single carrier will accept their service, and you may not receive all messages from short-code and regular numbers. The price is much likely less than a full roaming package, though, so it could be worthwhile to try it out on your next trip to see if it works for you.

Contact the Bank

Finally, and as a method of last resort, be ready to call your bank from abroad should you absolutely have to. Many financial institutions have voice ID verification, so even if you’re calling from a foreign number or online service such as Google Voice, you’ll still be able to verify your identity and make some transactions.

Even if your bank does not have voice verification, you still may be able to arrange proof of identification that sidesteps 2FA by providing information specific to you and your account.

While this option isn’t convenient, it can be effective should all other avenues of authenticating yourself to access your account fail.

Two-Factor Authentication Methods for Canadian Financial Institutions

The Prince of Travel team has had plenty of experience with the 2FA procedures of most major financial institutions in the country. From our experiences, we’ve compiled the following methods that each bank uses.

If you keep this list in mind while using the strategies we’ve outlined above, you’ll be able to remedy your authentication woes far faster and with less of a headache.

Remember, your experience with 2FA might vary, but this list should give you a good idea of what to look out for.

  • American Express Canada: Amex does not require 2FA and provides the fastest and best phone service in Canada for accounts that come under review for any reason.
  • BMO : BMO does not require 2FA at present, but may automatically flag accounts. In this case, immediately call the BMO security centre at 1-877-225-5266.
  • Canadian Tire Financial Services: Canadian Tire will send an email to your registered email address whenever they have doubts regarding your identity. Their call centre is also excellent, and rivals American Express when it comes to customer service.
  • CIBC : CIBC provides 2FA via SMS, phone call, or push notifications in the CIBC app. It can also send 2FA codes via email, but not to free personal email providers such as Gmail.
  • EQ: EQ Bank provides both SMS and email messages.
  • HSBC: The primary method of 2FA for HSBC is via the mobile app; however, its functionality can leave something to be desired. Don’t be surprised if you’re required to contact their call centre, which can be frustrating when in another country as you may be required to verify via SMS text message while on the phone.
  • Manulife: Manulife offers both email and SMS 2FA methods.
  • MBNA: MBNA is 100% phone-based, either via call or SMS.
  • National Bank: Email or SMS are the preferred methods of communication for the mainly Quebec-based National Bank.
  • PC Financial: For both their credit cards and prepaid Money Account , PC Financial uses SMS or email notifications.
  • RBC : All RBC 2FA is conducted via its mobile banking app. However, it’s not strictly necessary, and you can access your account from an unrecognized location through dated security measures like answering a security question.
  • Rogers Bank: Strangely, even though Rogers Bank’s parent company is a telecom giant, it only does 2FA via email.
  • Scotiabank : Scotiabank only uses app-based 2FA.
  • Simplii: As the telephone/online-only subsidiary of CIBC, Simplii is entirely app-based for verification.
  • Tangerine: The online-only arm of Scotiabank provides 2FA via email, though occasionally you will be contacted by their fraud department.
  • TD : TD requires its 2FA to go through either call, SMS, or their proprietary separate authenticator mobile app .
  • Wise: The Wise Prepaid Visa, which is excellent for foreign currency conversions , uses in-app push notifications.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication Before You Travel

2FA secures your accounts by sending a verification code to another trusted platform. Before you travel, it’s critical to ensure that you’ll be able to receive these messages successfully.

If you try to set up 2FA from an unknown location, you’ll be prompted for 2FA to set it up. Rather than getting caught in this endless loop, you’ll need to take this first step at home.

Make sure that your online banking profile is up to date before you travel, listing any phone numbers or email addresses where you’d like to receive verification messages.

Also, if the bank uses in-app authentication, be sure to opt into this feature and download any required mobile apps.

It’s interesting to note that many banks seem to corral customers toward their mobile app instead of just using SMS, which has both advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, it’s easier to use a mobile app when travelling, and you typically don’t run into any issues accessing your online banking as long as you’re on a trusted device with a Wi-Fi connection. On the other hand, if you lose access to your device, it can be a pain to try and access your online banking with an institution whose primary 2FA method is entirely app- or smartphone-based.

Therefore, I’d highly recommend having a few fallback options, whether activating multiple 2FA methods for the same financial institution, or using multiple financial institutions. If you run into trouble, it will likely be time consuming to regain access to your accounts, but at least you’ll still have access to your finances from around the world.

Two-factor authentication is the ubiquitous best practice in modern digital security, and it’s helpful to remember how to get past this extra step to access your accounts whenever you travel or are away from home.

With Canadian telecom rates – and especially roaming rates – being some of the highest in the world, it’s important to do whatever you can to keep costs low when abroad. Fortunately, many institutions now offer Wi-Fi-friendly alternatives to receive verification codes, but it’s disappointing that so many companies still rely exclusively on SMS-based two-factor authentication.

Regardless, you should be able to manoeuvre your way around most 2FA hurdles that come up, using some strategies to dodge the pain of $15-a-day international roaming fees unless they absolutely cannot be avoided.

Until next time, transact undisturbed.

Thank you for this post – super helpful and has saved me a lot of money.

I’m with Lucky Mobile in Canada. Lucky’s SIM card doesn’t work overseas (no roaming). What then?

I’ve been using Fongo for this since 2017. Only fee I pay is $9.99 every 6 months to be able to send CAD SMS. Making and receiving calls and receiving SMS to/from Canada is free.

SMS short codes are dodgy on all VOIP providers. I use Authy (same as Google Authenticator) for Paypal. Most others I use the option for them to call me on my Fongo VOIP number and speak the code which always works.

What if you put your sim card into an old (backup?) phone connected to a charger here at home, and make a call forward to a cheap number you’ll be using overseas? This way, you could use a Google Fi or anything else really overseas, and still get your texts/phone calls forwarded at a favourable rate. Yes, I get it, that means that you don’t have your line once you land back and until you get home – but all other options arw far from perfect too.

I recently had to update all of my accounts and discovered one of the institutions will not accept a VOIP number for 2FA. I can’t remember which one, but it definitely throws a wrench in my strategy. Also, friendly reminder to try to uninstall/remove any old devices from your accounts, as it can be very frustrating trying to get codes sent to devices that you no longer have.

It’s a pain to get notification by text oversea with Roam at Home plan like those by Rogers. As soon as you received a text, you are instantly hit with the Roam at Home fee for the day and it resets based on Eastern Standard Time.

You forgot Brim. Not on the list and they use Two-Factor Authentication with Email confirmation. Please add them to the list.

Brim is probably the most tech-friendly, easiest to track expenses, pay online foreign purchases, Google pay, and just in general pay while overseas. I have been blocked on my HSBC Mastercard and Scotiabank AMX cards at many retailers where Brim or TD Visa worked out as a last resort. As for withdrawals… using the global ATM alliance I have had better luck with ATMs working and even exchange rates with Canadian Scotiabank debit cards rather than with Tangerine debit cards. Tangerine uses a worse exchange rate than Scotiabank despite both not being charged the ATM fees. Tangerine also has longer hold times on the phone when stuff goes wrong which can become very costly or time-consuming while making an overseas call. Google voice drops after about 30 minutes.. so if you’re on hold for a while it can be a pain.

I have used pretty much every financial institution and found the easiest way around this two-factor authentication problem for banking apps, amazon, steam, points apps… etc is to briefly turn your roaming on but with the data off while still on a secure WiFi connection before entering the app or trying to log in. You’ll receive the code and then you can turn off roaming again immediately.

I am currently Rogers and this works with them… but Rogers has been going downhill lately especially since Rogers Mastercard really has so few overseas benefits for Rogers customers now… and with the ever-increasing roam like home fees and the worsening of their WE Mastercard even with their new credit card on the market waiving a couple of roam like home days a year it doesn’t seem worth it to keep going with them. I am thinking of going over to FIZZ for my mobile services and giving it a try for texts or emergencies overseas alongside a local country-specific sim card. The only thing is you can’t pre-pay your FIZZ account and they don’t accept AMX… FIZZ only accepts VISA & Mastercard like Videotron, so those points to keep in mind. Not sure the best card to use for Fizz and Videotron maybe a card that gives benefits on recurring bills if it counts? The reason I mention FIZZ is that you can set up a cheap phone line with them for less than 15 CAD a month to receive texts anywhere and adapt it to your needs as you go. I haven’t personally tested it out yet but will soon.

5 Out of Office Examples for Traveling on a Business Trip

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning that we will receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase. All opinions are those of the author.

Photo Setting an Out of Office Message for Traveling on Business

When you need to travel for work, you might need to set an out of office message. Out of office messages are useful if you are not available during regular work hours. This may be necessary if you are out of the office in transport, such as on an airplane without WiFi, or if you are participating in a conference and cannot be online.

Out of Office Message Requirements

Your out of office message can be as detailed as you would like, but there is one requirement for your auto reply email: state when you will be back. You do not  need to explain why you are away, however you should at least communicate when you will be able to respond to your emails. Otherwise, you can be as creative as you would like.

A typical business travel out of office email will have the following components:

  • Thank the person for their email.
  • Let the person know when you will be returning.
  • Provide an alternate contact person or emergency contact number.
  • State that you will respond to emails when you return.

Additional components of your out of office message could include:

  • Whether you are checking your email, versus if you are out of the country
  • Why you are currently out of the office

See some of our business trip out of office messages below.

Out of Office on a Business Trip

If you are out of the office on a business trip, you can state so in your auto reply message. If you are traveling for a client, you do not want to get too specific on the location. Instead, leave your email vague. Put your location on your corporate calendar. If your coworker needs to know where you are, they can check your calendar for details.

Thank you for your email. I am currently out of the office on a business trip, and I will be returning on [Date]. I will respond to your email upon my return. Sincerely, Michelle

The above should be the bare minimum included in your auto reply message. If there is the possibility of urgent matters coming up while you are gone, you should include a contact person or an emergency contact number in your message as well.

I am currently out of the office on a business, and I will be returning on [Date]. If your matter is urgent, please contact [Name] at [Name’s Email], or call me at [Number]. Otherwise, I will respond to your message when I return. Thanks, Michelle

Only include your phone number in your out of office message if you do not mind being reached. If you are traveling to a place without service or will be unable to talk, it is best to only leave a contact person.

Out of Office during Business Travel

Occasionally for work, you may find that you are in commute for an entire day and will have limited access to email. If many of your coworkers will wonder where you are, it may be ideal to set up an out of office message for business travel.

I am currently traveling with limited access to email. If you need immediate assistance, please contact [Contact]. Otherwise, I will respond to your email as soon as possible. Thanks, Michelle

You might also be traveling to work, but find yourself at a client with a poor Wifi connection. While you are working, many of your coworkers may be wondering why you do not appear online, or why you are taking longer than usual to respond. In these circumstances, you might want an auto reply message similar to the following:

I am currently on-site with limited access to Wifi. If your matter is urgent, please contact [Contact] or call me at [Number]. Thanks, Michelle

Out of Office Attending a Conference

If you are on a conference business trip, mentioning the conference in your out of office can be beneficial. If a client who is also attending the conference emails you, your client may notice the opportunity to meet up with you.

Thank you for your email. I am currently at the Tableau Conference in Las Vegas, with limited access to email. I will be returning on [Date]. If you need immediate assistance, please contact me on my cell at [Number]. Sincerely, Michelle

Auto Reply Messages for Business Travel

Depending on your company culture, your out of office messages may be more casual or fun. However, if you work in professional services, it is best to keep your auto reply messages as fluff-free and simple as possible. State that you will be out, say when you will be back, and include what to do if it is an emergency.

To access free messaging when traveling internationally with Facebook Messenger, connect to Wi-Fi or use a local SIM card with data to send messages and make calls without incurring additional charges from your mobile carrier.

iPhone: 4.0 stars (at time of publishing)

Android: 4.1 stars (at time of publishing)

Facebook Messenger is great for instant messaging, allowing you to send text messages, photos, videos, and audio recordings to your contacts.

This real-time communication feature enables you to maintain ongoing conversations with your loved ones, regardless of the distance between you. Facebook Messenger does require access to a Wi-Fi network if you don't want to pay anything. It relies on an internet connection to send and receive messages, make voice and video calls, and access other features.

SIX PRIVACY AND SECURITY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO CLEAR UP ONCE AND FOR ALL

To get free messaging when traveling internationally with iMessage, connect to Wi-Fi or use a local SIM card with data to send messages and make calls without incurring additional charges from your mobile carrier.

iPhone: 4.1 stars (at time of publishing)

This option is only handy when it comes to messaging between iPhone users like Dean, but it is completely free to use. If you and the person you're texting both have an iPhone, you can use the Messages  app that you already use to text. If you didn't set up an international plan with your phone carrier, iMessage will only work while you're on Wi-Fi, and you'll be able to tell because your texts send as blue bubbles instead of green ones.

Be sure you have iMessage turned on by following these steps:

  • Go to  Settings
  • Tap  Messages
  • Make sure the button next to iMessage is toggled on.

If you want to avoid any potential charges for international SMS messages, on the same Messages page of your Settings, be sure  Send as SMS  is toggled off.

REAL OR FAKE? AI PRODUCT REVIEWS ARE MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

To get free messaging when traveling internationally with WhatsApp, connect to Wi-Fi or use a local SIM card with data to send messages and make calls without incurring additional charges from your mobile carrier.

iPhone : 4.7 stars (at time of publishing)

Android: 4.3 stars (at time of publishing)

WhatsApp is a popular messaging app that allows you to send messages over Wi-Fi or data connection. It works across iPhone and Android, so anyone can use it to message friends or family. You'll need to download the app and have an internet connection, and you can follow the steps to connect it to your cell phone number.

  • Download and Install WhatsApp on your smartphone
  • Once the installation is complete, tap on the WhatsApp icon on your home screen or app drawer to open the application
  • On the welcome screen, you'll be presented with the WhatsApp Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Read through them and tap "Agree and Continue" to proceed
  • WhatsApp will prompt you to enter your phone number. Make sure to enter the correct number associated with your cell phone. Select your country code from the drop-down menu and enter your phone number. Then tap " Next"
  • WhatsApp will send a verification code to the phone number you provided via SMS. It will attempt to automatically detect the code, but if it fails, you can enter the code manually. If you don't receive the SMS, you can request a voice call with the verification code instead
  • After verifying your phone number, WhatsApp will prompt you to set up your profile . You can choose to add a profile photo and enter your name. You can also add a status message if you like. Tap " Next" or " Skip" to proceed
  • WhatsApp will ask for permission to access your contacts. Granting this permission allows WhatsApp to sync your contacts and identify people from your address book who are already using WhatsApp
  • Once the setup is complete, you'll be taken to the WhatsApp main screen. You can now start using WhatsApp to send messages

Remember, WhatsApp requires an active phone number to function. Make sure your phone is connected to a cellular network or has a working SIM card to receive the verification code during the setup process. Be sure to have a good Wi-Fi connection to be able to send messages over WhatsApp for free.

If you're looking for a way to stay connected and enjoy free messaging while traveling internationally, Signal can be a great option.

Signal is a privacy-focused messaging app that prioritizes secure communication. It is free and easy to use and offers end-to-end encryption for messages, voice calls, and video calls. Signal's commitment to user privacy means that it doesn't collect or store user data, making it a popular choice for individuals concerned about their digital privacy. BEWARE OF THE 'SAY YES' PHONE SCAM

Stay connected for free while traveling internationally by utilizing Telegram's messaging features and connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

iPhone: 4.2 stars  (at time of publishing)

Android: 4.3 stars ( at time of publishing )

Telegram is a great free messaging app that is particularly useful when traveling abroad. It offers reliable and fast messaging services even in areas with limited connectivity, allowing you to stay in touch with friends and family. With cost-effective communication over the internet, end-to-end encryption for privacy, and features like group chats and offline messaging, Telegram ensures seamless and secure communication while you explore new destinations.

HOW TO STAY CONNECTED ON YOUR PHONE WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD

All of the apps above allow you to stay connected without incurring hefty texting charges by harnessing the power of Wi-Fi. Here's how to make WiFi calls on your phone:

  • Click on "Settings"
  • Click "Cellular"
  • "Wi-Fi Calling"
  • Switch "Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone" on
  • Click "Enable" Wi-Fi Calling"
  • Click " Networks & Internet"
  • Click "Mobile Network"
  • Click "Advanced"
  • Click "Wi-Fi Calling"
  • Toggle on "Wi-Fi Calling"
  • Click the "Phone" icon
  • Tap the "More Options" (three vertical dots)
  • Tap "Settings"
  • Tap " Wi-Fi Calling" and then toggle the switch to the right to turn the feature on.

HOW TO SILENCE AMAZON ALEXA'S 'BY THE WAY' SUGGESTIONS

Ensure that you confirm the Wi-Fi network name with the business that is allowing you to log onto their WiFI, as several locations may require a password for access.

Next, carefully browse through the available network options in the vicinity. If you come across multiple networks with identical names, inform the relevant establishment. In most instances, this situation arises due to the business utilizing a dual-band Wi-Fi router, which generates two separate networks—one operating at 2.4GHz and the other at 5GHz.

Make sure your gadget's operating system is up to date, along with the browser. That way, potential vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit will be eliminated.

You can also install a VPN app to encrypt your Internet connection. That way, hackers won't be able to snoop on what you're sending and receiving.  For the best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices by visiting CyberGuy.com/VPN.

DO THIS BEFORE YOU TOSS, DONATE OR SELL YOUR PRINTER

If you don't want to be dependent on a WiFi signal, you'll need to add an international plan to your phone carrier. You can contact your phone carrier to find out the most affordable option for your plan. For best ways to text wherever you are using an international phone plan and SIM cards, click here .

HOW TO STAY INCOGNITO AND CONCEAL YOUR NUMBER WHEN CALLING SOMEONE

If you only want to send a few text messages here or there while abroad, you'll be able to find WiFi pretty easily and will have no trouble using one of the apps I recommended. However, I do also recommend adding a cheap international plan, even if it's a small amount of data, so you're able to use your phone in case of an emergency in the country you're visiting.

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs

Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.

Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.

This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.

For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.

Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .

How many Americans have traveled internationally?

Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.

Related:  How experience with international travel varies across 24 countries

To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:

  • Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
  • Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
  • Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.

Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.

A map showing that Americans are less likely than Europeans to have visited 5 or more countries.

However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )

Who travels internationally?

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that U.S. ‘globe-trotters’ are more likely to be older, have higher incomes and more education.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).

Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.

Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).

Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.

There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.

Do travelers know more about the world?

A bar chart showing that Americans who’ve traveled widely abroad have greater interest in foreign affairs.

Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.

Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.

Is international travel related to views of global engagement?

A bar chart showing that ‘globe-trotters’ prioritize U.S. engagement in world affairs and value compromise with other countries.

International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.

When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.

In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.

Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

Vinotok takes the message of community mythology abroad

April 24, 2024 14 Views

Sharing a ‘Mini-tok’ in Germany this spring

By Dawne Belloise

is one of the most beloved and distinctively local celebrations of Crested Butte and now others are seeking its message and meaning as it might pertain to their own community and heritage. Vinotok founders Marcie Telander and Mark Schwiesow were contacted by a presenting group to bring a mini Vinotok troupe to perform in an international forum in Potsdam, Germany, May 17 through 19. The presenting group is called The European Forum for the Study of Religion and the Environment. The Vinotok clan is currently in the process of raising funds to get a few of them to the event and have set up a GoFundMe page (see below).

The focus of the forum is on the questions of arts and celebration as being used to bring a community together to advocate for the environment, however, Telander says that the discussions were mostly listed as academic. “There was a lot of talking around the idea but with no experience of how it can really happen,” she says. Telander says that there will be academic discourse but also artists and activists at this conference. She also notes that the conference organizers were excited about the Vinotok clan performing as well as lecturing. “It shows them that it really can be done and how it’s done.”

At the forum, Telander explains that the Vinotok clan will create altars and banners that are interactive and immersive and show the seven days of the pilgrimage of the way of Vinotok. Activities that individuals can do at these environmental altars will also be included. “We will be docents. It will include performative pieces which involve the conference participants in writing their own grumps and considering what they would wish to release from their own community so they can beckon and bring in transformative mythology and healing stories from their own roots,” she says.

The forum participants will also take part in a procession with nine of the Vinotok members who will be traveling to Germany, “who will be embodying the archetypal wisdom figures such as the Harvest Mother, the Green Man, the Earth Dragon, the Knight and others,” she says. The anticipated nine who will travel to Germany are Rob Sepety, Jo Ellipses, Chad Reich, KT Folz, Isabel Russell, Lisa Reuth, Molly Murfee, Schwiesow and Telander.

Telander says that the forum is questioning, through case studies, if this type of community activism exists anywhere. “Are we repeating ancient things from the past that don’t have meaning anymore? How would they include mythism, gaiaism and what is indigeneity? Those are big questions around the world.” Telander says that Vinotok is the case study. “There are people seeking home across the world. COVID really brought that to the forefront. But what is home? We do not know until we arrive and our external landscape is matched by the internal landscape, and we feel that. We want to assist people,” she says and feels that “place spirit” can be anywhere.

At home, Vinotok had been developing an apprenticeship where people from other places could participate and volunteer with guild masters. “They’d learn our philosophy, have hands-on volunteering and servant leadership with us,” she says. The participating apprentices would then take the work they do back to their own communities. “This is a special kind of reclamation in the 21st century of some of the most ancient forms of village making and community celebrating and elevating. It’s one of the most ancient forms of eco-activism that exists, especially in Europe.”

Telander explains that these ancient forms of “village making” and storytelling come from a band of sacred theater artists and players who would travel the villages and put on passion plays which helped identify and focus on the core values of the community, especially the elders, local artists and artisans. “It would bring the people together through the shared stories, music and theater. In turn, they would spend time with the different communities gathering personal stories and learn about the mythology and heritage of the peoples. They’d recreate it with local people learning the process.”

“Vinotok is based on a reclamation of these ancient European indigenous communities of enhancements and regeneration,” Telander explains. “We are practitioners of this, so essentially, Vinotok will be taking their stories to Germany and we’ll do a Mini-tok there. We’re returning with a European tradition to the homeland and the roots where it began.”

Telander said the goal now is to raise enough money to allow nine of the Vinotok troupe to travel to the forum where they’ll first present a panel of speakers, “focusing on our practice of forming a village environment of resistance, assistance and persistence and how a community can bridge disparity of views of the environment, generational gaps and any other form of community separation more safely through personal story sharing, seasonal celebrations, the devotion to the personhood of the environment and expressive arts from the heritage and legacy of the community ancestry.”

With the event rapidly approaching, Schwiesow comments, “Over 40 years, working-class Vinotok volunteers have dedicated tens of thousands of hours to making our community’s defining celebration available to all of Crested Butte. Of the 35 events during the week of Vinotok, many are free. The rest are for a minimal donation. We have not solicited money from the thousands of people who celebrate with us every year. We are not asking for personal remuneration now, merely help covering the expenses of the trip. Now we have an opportunity to show the world how, ‘Myth, Ritual and Practice’ can make a true difference both locally and internationally. This is why the conference was so interested and excited to have us there. It is our deep hope that those in our community who have the wherewithal will step up and contribute generously to this opportunity. The international community wants to know how our small village has united to celebrate together and raise awareness and activism on behalf of the environment in the ‘Age of Ecological Catastrophe’ and how to create a culture of resilience and sustainability in the 21st century.”

Closing day celebrations

Cliques, parking, commuter trails, the haves and have nots

[ By Aimee Eaton ] With a flurry of snow and high winds the ski …

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

  • I was excited to study abroad in Florence and to take small, cheap trips while abroad.
  • My classmates are not traveling cheaply; they are flying to luxury places like Dubai and the Alps.
  • I wonder if they are just doing it for social media, but I'm still enjoying my time abroad.

Insider Today

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

Related stories

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.
