A Return to Travel Company tours.

I set out on a journey with travel companies for a holiday in Asia with great trepidation after a very nasty experience with a company during Covid. We were on 16days Inspiring Japan from…

We were on 16days Inspiring Japan from 1-Apr-2024. Overall the tour was above expectations except for the optional tours/dinner. The worst was the Ramen dinner at Nagasaki’s Chinatown area. We paid ~AUD$80+ per person for the ramen tour but was served well below average Ramen. We had better ramen in the service area lunch stops for AUD$15-20/. Then the Okonomiyaki dinner at Hiroshima, we paid ~AUD$60+ pp for a not very good meal. Our room ar Dormy inn has hairs in the shower, reported this to Inspiring V and the hotel manager but we had couldn’t care less attitude.

first timer so far so good

We have just booked our first Inspiring vacation and found the process so far to this point seamless. The follow uo has been great and we are looking forward to our trip in about 400 days.

Booking success

I went to one of the roadshows. I was really impressed by the presentations. When I phoned to make enquiries about Japan and I had a really helpful person who sent me email with information on trips discussed. I then looked further into all tours offered to Japan and made a decision. The person who booked the tour was also very helpful. After the booking I needed to make an enquiry and got put through to a call centre, they did their best but were not as helpful as the initial sales people. I needed to make several phone calls before getting the answer. I haven’t taken the tour as yet but am impressed with itinerary and discounts.

The booking was going well until we had to pay for the trip it took some time for the payment site to open, then it was slow at bring up the two options that was available, a direct payment into the account or via a bPay method

Easy booking, confusing, scary air rez process

The booking was pretty straight forward, the itinerary looks great on paper, so far, and the voice communications freindly as can be. While I am new to their program, the air reservation system seems clumsy, confusing and il-defined....especially for a trip with pre-paid location based amount (fare) that seems like a signed blank check for a flight that begins in just ~80 days with no confirmation or seat selection. For now, I am just being patient and letting them work their "magic"

The Booking experience was easy enough, unfortunately I was unable to book a double room for two individual travellers …. With our past trips, we discovered we would prefer individual traveller hubs, and it seems that you can’t have individual hubs when travelling as a double. Even though I had contacted IV they regretfully advised that they could not offer individual hubs if travelling as a double, only twin … which is not what my husband and I want.

First Tour Group Holiday

This will be our first time using a tour experience for a holiday as I have been on a few and organizing the whole trip can be a bit too much for one person. Australian travel agency hit by data breach, leaking passport and travel details of thousands of customers

An investigation has been launched after a Melbourne-based travel agency was hit by a data breach, leaking thousands of passport and travel details of Australian customers.

An Australian travel agency has been hit with a data breach, leaking thousands of passport and travel details in the latest incident of its kind.

Melbourne-based travel agency Inspiring Vacations says it is investigating the cybersecurity incident which occurred in November last year. 

More than 112,000 records were leaked online from the company's non-password protected database with a size of 26.8GB, including details such as passport images, travel visas, travel itineraries and tickets. 

Some of the leaked travel documents contained partial credit card numbers of customers. 

Cybersecurity researcher, Jeremiah Fowler, discovered the breach and reported it to the company, and the database has since been secured.

"The exposed records contained potentially sensitive information such as high-resolution passport images, travel visa certificates, and itinerary or ticket files. A vast majority of the individuals I saw in the records appeared to be Australian citizens," he said.

"However, I also saw identification documents from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

"It is unclear how many passports were affected."

Mr Fowler said he saw spreadsheets containing detailed information of more than 13,000 customers which included their names, email addresses, trip costs and destinations. 

He added an estimated 24,000 itinerary and e-ticket documents showed partial credit card numbers.

"Travelling can be stressful enough with cancellations, delays, and dealing with other unforeseen circumstances and costs, which is why many people find it easier and more comfortable to use a travel agency when planning their vacations rather than doing it all themselves," Mr Fowler said.

"However, in the digital age that we live in, tourists may need to add ‘data security’ to the long list of travel concerns.

"The travel industry is a lucrative potential target for cyber criminals — not only are vacations expensive (which means travellers are attractive marks), but any travel agency would need their clients’ personal information and identity documents to make reservations on their behalf.

"Travelling abroad, for instance, requires a passport and sometimes an entry visa. Travellers rarely consider what happens to their highly valuable personal data, how or where their information is stored, and for how long it is retained."

Inspiring Vacations said it had notified the Office of the Information Commissioner of the incident.

Cybersecurity expert Ches Rafferty told 3AW Melbourne it was "disappointing" to see the company's data "effectively freely available" online.

"What I think is disappointing is...it appears from the reports that the data was just effectively freely available on a server," Mr Rafferty said.

"It wasn't behind any sort of protection and and it didn't have the data encrypted.

"We're still not seeing companies take this - securing our personal data - seriously."

Mr Rafferty said the latest attack raised grave concerns for other Australian companies who could come face a similar threat.

"What is it going to take in Australia for us to realise that we’re under a sustained attack right now because we’re making it so easy — why wouldn’t you come after Australian businesses?" he said.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said Inspiring Vacations notified it of the incident. 

"We are making preliminary inquiries with Inspiring Vacations regarding its compliance with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme," the OAIC said in a statement.

In its website, Inspiring Vacations said it was a "leading, award-winning" tour operator committed to "exceptional, value-for-money travel experiences for customers across the globe".

The Australia-owned company offers a range of tour packages around the world including fully guided tours, cruises, self-drive adventures and more.

SkyNews.com.au has contacted Inspiring Vacations for comment.

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Australian travel agency exposes customer data after leaving database publicly accessible

An Australian travel agency has leaked the data of thousands of its customers after it left a database openly accessible online.

Cyber security researcher Jeremiah Fowler said he discovered a non-password-protected database owned by Melbourne-based travel agency Inspiring Vacations, which contained 112,605 records belonging largely to Australian customers. However, data belonging to customers from Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK were observed as well.

It is worth noting that this number does not necessarily represent the number of customers affected but rather the number of records observed.

The database in question was reportedly an Amazon AWS cloud storage bucket that was incorrectly configured, allowing public access.

The incident was discovered in December last year, with Inspiring Vacations quickly informing its customers of the issue, according to a company statement.

“We treat cyber security and the protection of our data seriously, and we contacted staff and customers in early December to announce an investigation into these claims, supported by external experts,” said a spokesperson from Inspiring Vacations.

“We will update our stakeholders as this investigation progresses.”

The data contained in the database came to a total of 26.8 gigabytes and included “potentially sensitive information such as high-resolution passport images, travel visa certificates, and itinerary or ticket files”, said Fowler.

Additionally, Fowler observed “an estimated” 1,000 identification documents, but the number of customers identified is much greater, with other files in the database detailing other personally identifiable information such as passport numbers.

On top of this, the database contained 48 .xls spreadsheets detailing the information of 13.684 customers. This data included names, email addresses, destinations, trip costs and more.

“There were an estimated 24,000 itinerary and e-ticket .pdf documents, some of which show partial credit card numbers,” added Fowler.

“In addition to customer files, the database included various internal documents, such as 17,000 tax invoices to partners and affiliates that specify gross costs and commissions paid.”

Upon the discovery of the exposed database, Fowler informed Inspiring Vacations through a responsible disclosure notice and confirmed that the database was then secured to prevent further public access.

“I received a reply thanking me for my notification and confirming that I didn’t download files from the database without redactions,” added Fowler.

As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald , Inspiring Vacations has contacted the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

A spokesperson from the OAIC, speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald, also confirmed that it had been notified by Inspiring Vacations.

“Inspiring Vacations has notified the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner of the incident,” said the spokesperson.

“We are making preliminary inquiries with Inspiring Vacations regarding its compliance with the notifiable data breaches scheme.”

Additionally, a spokesperson from Inspiring Vacations, speaking with Cyber Daily, has confirmed that an investigation has been launched and that a “dedicated team” is working to address the issue.

Cyber Daily has reached out to the privacy team at Inspiring Vacations for more information regarding the breach.

While at this stage in the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest that the exposed data has been used by unauthorised users for malicious purposes, the data contained within the database present a major danger to affected individuals.

For example, the data could be used by threat actors to construct phishing emails and extort money from victims. They could also use the credit card information known to engage social engineering techniques and trick customers into providing them with the rest.

“The exposed database also contained a folder of CVs or résumés. These documents include much more personal information that can potentially be exploited for various malicious purposes, as they contain full names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses,” said Fowler.

These details would allow threat actors to write convincing phishing emails that would encourage victims to reveal even more sensitive information, such as tax information and other personal details.

The personal information and passport data could also allow threat actors to engage in identity theft, allowing them to apply for credit cards or open accounts.
