The beach is open from dawn to dusk all year round, therefore the beach is closed for after-dark launches from Kennedy Space Center.

Playalinda is generally open for daytime launches but can have restricted access, in particular when launchpad 39A is in use.

Cruises Out of Port Canaveral Florida: Sailing to Paradise

An easy drive from the mid-Atlantic and southern states, Port Canaveral in Florida, is the busiest cruise port in America. (overtaking Miami in 2023). The terminals are clean and modern, and parking in Port Canaveral Florida is a breeze. I’ve been cruising out of Port Canaveral for over 23 years, and I love how hassle-free and user-friendly it is.

Not only does Disney sail from here, but so does Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and MSC. The ships rotate depending on the season, but there’s always a ship in port, and the schedules are convenient. Pick from 4 to  9-day cruises. 

Cruises out of Port Canaveral typically sail to the Bahamas, Western Caribbean (Florida Keys, Belize, Cozumel, Jamaica, Honduras, and Costa Maya), or the Eastern Caribbean (US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, St. Martin, and Puerto Rico). 

You will not likely find cruises to Bermuda or the southern Caribbean from this port. 

Parking in Port Canaveral: Quick and Easy

Parking in Port Canaveral for your cruise is quick, easy, and hassle-free. You have several options.  

There are parking garages conveniently located across from each ship. It costs $17.00 per day +tax, including the day you arrive. Be aware that rates are subject to change without notice. Contact the Canaveral Port Authority (321-783-7831). 

You’ll drop your luggage off at the porter, go park, and walk across to start processing. That’s it.  But there are other less expensive options.  

Other Cape Canaveral in Florida Cruise Parking Options

As expected, you will pay less for parking the further you park from the port, but these options include a round-trip shuttle to the port, so it’s not a deal breaker. 

• The cheapest parking place is 6.5 miles from the cruise terminals at Port Canaveral Parking , with a daily fee of $10.95. 
• Closer, at 2 miles away, you’ll find Park N Cruise Port Canaveral Parking ($12.99 a day) and Country Inn and Suites by Carlson Cruise Parking which works the cost into your stay.
• The closest to the terminal (under one mile) is Port Parking Space at $17.00 per day. However, they do NOT service Disney Cruise lines. 
• And if you’re leaving your large van (15 passengers) or RV while you cruise, the best option is Park N Cruise Port Canaveral Parking for 15 Passenger Vans or RV Parking for $23.50 per day. They do NOT allow semi-trucks and are only 2 miles from the terminal. 

Hotels in Cape Canaveral in Florida With Cruise Parking

Many Cape Canaveral hotels in Florida provide cruise parking. These are all name-brand hotels in safe areas. We’ve got all the necessary information, so you don’t have to dig.  However, please double-check with your hotel to ensure no changes since this writing.

• Country Inn & Suites – Cruise parking is $65 plus tax for one vehicle for up to 8 days. Includes shuttle to and from the cruise terminal. Service can be added to any existing reservation. Shuttle only without parking is $7 per person each way to the cruise terminal. Call two days before cruising to schedule shuttle times. First come, first serve basis.
• Home2 Suites by Hilton- Cruise parking is $25 per day. Shuttle Departs at 11 and 11:45 am $10 per person each way to the terminal if staying at the hotel.
• Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton – Cruise parking is $20 per day. The shuttle is $10 each way per person for shuttle service. Sign up for the shuttle at check-in.
• Residence Inn by Marriott- Cruise parking is $10.70 per night, added at check-in. The shuttle to the terminal is $8 per person each way—Reserve the shuttle and parking at check-in. 
• Springhill Suites by Marriott – This is an excellent hotel to use if you’re flying in, as it has an Orlando airport shuttle for $30 each way.  If driving down, it’s $12.84 per day for cruise parking. $10 for the shuttle to the cruise terminal per person each way. 
• Radisson- Different Stay and Cruise package options are available and depend on whether you are flying in or driving. Shuttle service is included when booking the package:  Prices are subject to change depending on when you travel. Contact Radisson for rates , as they vary from month to month.
• Park for 3 or 4 nights and cruise.  
• Park for 5 to 8 nights and cruise. 
• Fly, stay, and cruise (includes a shuttle from/to Orlando International Airport (MCO).  
• Snooze and cruise (does not include parking). 

Luggage Service

Finding a place to store your luggage when you roll into town and your hotel won’t let you check in yet, or you have to check out of your hotel well before your ship departs. One excellent option I love is a luggage storage service. And there’s no better service than Radical Storage which offers you freedom and peace of mind for as little as $6 a day.

Sitting around a hotel isn’t fun. But there are many fun things to do in the Cape Canaveral area. You’ll barely spend any gas money going from one to the next and filling up your free time adventures.

Here are some I’ve enjoyed when staying in Cape Canaveral.

Aerial Adventures 

Located right off Astronaut Blvd in Cape Canaveral in Florida, you’ll find Aerial Adventures , a high-flying tightrope walking experience, not for the faint of heart. Like a squirrel, you’ll wind through 49 different agility tests while suspended (securely) 45ft above the ground. 

Don’t worry if you aren’t too excited about heights or have little ones with you. Aerial Adventures offers seven different trails and three skill levels so everyone can have a great time. This isn’t just a physical activity; you’ll have the opportunity to use your problem-solving skills all along the way. 

Tripadvisor ranks it as the #1 Outdoor Activity in Cape Canaveral. I agree!

Banana River Park 

Banana River Park fits the bill if you are looking for a quiet waterside park to relax or want to host a large group at the available pavilion in Cape Canaveral in Florida. You can reserve the pavilion for a fee and have the place for yourself or your group. 

Alcohol isn’t allowed in the park without a permit, but your four-legged friends are welcome, provided they are on a leash. The view of the intercoastal river is fabulous. This is an excellent spot with a lot of options.

There are plenty of amenities at your disposal:

• Soccer fields
• Picnic table and grills
• Playground for the kids
• Dock for kayaks
• Parking area, which holds 30 vehicles 
• Shade shelter
• Putting green for working on your golf game
• EV charging station

If you’re cruising, you’ll soon relax on pristine world-class beaches in the Caribbean or Mexico. But if the kids are screaming for more time in the sand or beaches are just your passion, you are in Florida, so it’s hard not to find one nearby. 

I’ve visited most of the beaches in the Cape Canaveral in Florida area, and while they aren’t world-class, they are relaxing and picturesque. 

Before going to famous Cocoa Beach, you can check out ones close by like Jetty Park Beach, Cape Canaveral Beach, Peacock Beach (yes, you will see some peacocks in the area for sure, and not necessarily on the beach), and Monroe Beach.

Dinosaur Museum and Store

The Dinosaur Museum and Store is in its 26th year and is always a crowd-pleaser. You’ll find more than just dinosaur relics under this roof. Here you’ll also find the Adventure Zone, which offers an interactive experience for all ages. Everyone will find something fun to see, touch, and play with, from the live animals to the science stations and video games. 

There’s a movie theater and even a carnival ride on the premises, so don’t be surprised if you spend more time there than expected. Plenty to choose from for a dino-themed souvenir in the store. A great stop on a rainy day or to get out of the heat.

Exploration Tower 

You will see a unique-looking building on the water, close to all the cruise terminals. This is the Exploration Tower . Not only is Exploration Tower a site from the outside, but inside this architectural marvel, you’ll find seven floors of interactive play and educational exhibits. There are indoor and outdoor observation decks, a cafe, an auditorium, and a gift shop.

The tower is currently closed while it undergoes a maintenance project but is set to reopen in 2023 at some point. Enjoy a little something different with a visit and check out the views of all the ships that make port in Cape Canaveral.

Golf ‘n Gator

This isn’t your average putt-putt experience. At Golf’n Gator , you get more than an opportunity to drop a hole-in-one (you get 36 tries with two 18-hole courses); you get to meet some alligators up close and personal. And not just gators. You can see and hold other Florida wildlife too, like snakes and tortoises. 

You may only intend to visit for a quick visit, but with so much to see and do, you will find yourself staying longer. The best part is that it’s right on Astronaut Blvd, so you’ll be there in no time. The kids will love it! 

Jetty Park is a one-stop shop for seeing the beauty of Port Canaveral. Here you’ll find a beach , campground, fishing pier, and campground store to meet most of your needs. Because of its location, Jetty Park is THE BEST place to sit and watch cruise ships arriving and departing, launches from KSC, or fireworks if you happen to be in town on the 4th. 

If you’re planning to camp, call well in advance for reservations. This is one gorgeous location, one that will have you coming back again and again when you visit Cape Canaveral in Florida. 

Beachside Grand Prix

Hold onto your hat, literally! At Beachside Grand Prix , their electric karts pack a lot of speed and fun. This multi-level track is a blast giving you a great glimpse of the area from the top level if you dare take your eyes off the road. This is one activity the kids will absolutely love–a chance to beat mom and dad from behind the wheel of their own little sports car. 

While safety is paramount at Beachside Grand Prix, the high-tech course was designed for speed, and it never disappoints. After your race is complete, there is plenty to do since the property is shared with Golf’n Gator . So play to spend an afternoon with the family during your stay in Cape Canaveral.

Ron Jon and Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is home to the surf and beach lifestyle icon Ron Jon . Founded in 1959 on the Jersey Shore, Ron Jon is well-established and well-respected worldwide for its apparel and beach/surf gear. If it says Ron Jon, it came from one of their stores, as their merchandise is not sold elsewhere.

The “One of a Kind” store in Cocoa Beach is a popular destination due to its large sprawling footprint and energetic decor. People rarely come to the beach and want their picture taken in front of a shop. But of course, Ron John Surf Shops are far from ordinary. The prices are reasonable, and the souvenirs are plentiful. A great stop, a must-see!

Manatee Sanctuary Park

Manatee Sanctuary Park is Cape Canaveral’s best park, with ten scenic acres of waterfront on the Banana River. 

This park borders a section of the Banana River, a protected manatee habitat. There’s no guarantee you’ll spot a manatee during your visit, but these gentle creatures are often seen feeding off the seagrass along the boardwalk–so have your camera ready. 

Even if you don’t see any manatees, this is a beautiful, peaceful place for picture taking, exercise, or getting the kids some fresh air.

Victory Casino Cruises

If you’re feeling lucky and want an afternoon on the water, take a spin on the Victory Casino Cruise out of Port Canaveral Florida. Whether a veteran gambler or a first-timer, the Victory Casino Cruise has something for everyone. Penny slots for those not wanting to risk their vacation funds and plenty of higher denomination slots and table games.

The ship isn’t huge, but it’s comfortable with a guest cut-off for the two daily cruises. There is plenty of space above the deck with the outdoor bar and seating area, and if it’s too warm or windy, you can step inside where comfortable seating awaits. Plenty of discount coupons are available right here . 

Our experiences on this cruise have always been excellent. The only thing to bear in mind is you are dealing with a smaller ship, and out in the Atlantic, you will feel it, so come prepared with some Dramamine, and you should be fine. The meals in the galley were tasty and plentiful. I’d double down on this casino at sea anytime I’m in town. 

Wizard of Oz Museum and Gift Shop

Young or old, everyone loves the Wizard of Oz.  Open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, your entire family will love the immersive Wizard of Oz Museum . The museum has a 20,000 cubic feet Immersive Experience show. Using 30 laser projectors, visitors are placed in Dorothy’s shoes and travel into a tornado, through Munchkin Land, Dark forest, and poppy field to Emerald City.

See an extensive collection of unique artifacts from the books by L. Frank Baum, the movie “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland, and modern versions like “The Wiz” and “Wicked.”

And if you’re an art lover, there’s a surprise: An immersive Van Gogh experience too!

Airboat Ride

What’s visiting Florida without an airboat ride? Head west on Highway 50 to Christmas, Florida, to Captain Dukes Air Boat Rides for a thrilling ride through the Central Florida Everglades–one of the last wetlands in America.

See snakes, bobcats, herons, bald eagles, raccoons, and alligators!

Reservations required. 

Cocoa Village

A short ride from Cape Canaveral, you’ll find Historic Cocoa Village , a quaint little spot with plenty of charm. This is one great village if you like to walk the streets to shop or stretch your legs. We saw plenty of bicyclists there, so it’s a trendy place to bike around. 

The cobblestone/brick roads here and there are adorable and draw you in. Plenty of restaurants and bakeries to keep your interest any time of the day. Taylor Park and the waterfront are right at the bottom of the hill going east, making for a relaxing place to sit or stroll. A short excursion from Cape Canaveral in Florida is worth the drive.

Dolphin Ears Dolphin Tours

If you love wildlife, you’ll enjoy this fun and educational experience.  Take a trip with Dolphin Ears Dolphin Tours . They offer ecotourism and a wild dolphin swim experience. You will motor to the Banana/Indian River Lagoon for two hours to see and listen to dolphins with special listening devices.  

Then you’ll head to the Sand Bar, where you can swim, float in a tube and see wildlife in their element. 

There are a maximum of 6 guests per trip. 

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Poking out above the foliage on the property of the Space Force, The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse has had a presence here for 155 years. The United States Space Force is tasked with maintaining the vintage lighthouse as it is still active and is used by the United States Coast Guard. 

The good news is even though the lighthouse lives in an isolated location; enthusiasts can still visit it along with the museum and gift shop. Tours are restricted to Wednesdays between 10 am and 1 pm, so if this fits your schedule, you can book your seat on the bus to get out there and see this area institution. You are not permitted to drive your vehicle to the lighthouse unless you are badged.

Air Force Space and Missile Museum

The Air Force Space and Missile Museum tour is coupled with the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse tour above. It’s a great two-for-one deal since gaining access to either location takes a specific military badge or, in this case, a pre-scheduled tour.

The museum opened in 1966 to educate visitors about the history of United States rocketry and space flight. The museum’s objective is to acquire, restore, and display as many items of historical significance as possible, which led to the formation of the US Space Force space launch enterprises.

When visiting, you will see many full-scale exhibits at Launch Complex 26, nearby at Launch Complex 5/6, along with the Sands Space History Center . This is great for space enthusiasts. The history is palpable.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge , is located along Florida’s coast just west of Titusville. The refuge was established on the north-western edge of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. This is probably the furthest quick trip for things to do when staying in Cape Canaveral, and it’s a beauty and worth the short drive. 

The refuge is contained within one of the most productive estuaries in the US. Established in 1963 to protect migratory birds, the sanctuary covers a whopping 140,000 acres. The refuge contains several habitats for a coastal location: saltwater marshes, managed impoundments, coastal dunes, scrub, hardwood hammocks, and pine Flatwoods.  

You’ll find more than 1,500 species of plants and animals here and 15 federally listed species. Easy to access and a great place to explore, working it into your visit won’t be regretted.

Kennedy Space Center

Young or old, there are very few places to visit that both amaze and inspire minds like Kennedy Space Center . While the space program has its roots in my home state of Virginia (NASA’s Langley Research Center), the best-known NASA centers are Kennedy in Florida and Johnson in Houston. But by far the sexiest of them all is Kennedy, with all the manned launches and famed moon landing success.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Center has grown into a metropolis of its own. It’s a must-see if you have a few hours to a few days to spend in the area. Granted, you will have to pay to park and to gain entry to the visitors’ center, but it is worth every penny. So much science and history, not to mention the full-size flight vehicles on display.

Tours of the actual space center originate from the visitors center, where you will board a tour bus and enjoy getting close to the Vehicle Assembly Building and other well-known Kennedy Space Center sites.

This is Florida.  And that means year-round golfing. So if you’re itching to get a quick 9 in, here are a few courses nearby. 

• The Savannahs – A beautiful, low-country style course with a relaxing southern atmosphere. 
• Cocoa Beach Country Club – Though it says “country club” in the name, this is a public course open to all. There are three courses to choose from, and the atmosphere is casual. 
• Manatee Cove – Located on Patrick AFB, this is an excellent choice for active duty or retirees. Rates are very reasonable and go by rank. Civilians are allowed on with permission. 
• Turtle Creek- This is an older golf course, but it is nicely manicured and well-wooded. And they have a fun twist on golf called “Smash Golf,” -a hybrid of golf and tennis. Don’t ask…just go play!
• Viera East Golf Club – This absolutely gorgeous golf course has pristine white sand bunkers, clear lakes, and rolling fairways. 
• The Great Outdoors Golf Club – A pretty, hidden gem on the Space Coast that boasts lovely fairways and greens. Great for golfers of all levels. 

Yum Yum: Eats and Drinks in Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral isn’t NYC or Paris.  But it has some decent restaurants. My favorite is at the port, Grills Seafood and Tiki Bar . I’ve tied on a few here. Besides the great drinks, there is usually live music, beautiful views, and delicious food. This is a local favorite and one of mine.

Southern Charm Cafe is one of the best places in the entire south to get typical southern comfort food. With vegetarian and vegan options, everyone in your party can be happy. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner at reasonable prices…this is a can’t-miss. 

In the mood for a good pizza? Head over to Papa Vito’s Italian Restaurant. Get there for happy hour from 3 to 6 pm for discounted wine and beer. The pizza and calzones are the best in town!

For a fun American pub experience and drinks, head over to the Preacher Bar . The atmosphere is eclectic, casual, and friendly. This is within walking distance from many hotels–so bottoms up!

For Mediterranean fare, you can’t beat Pita Paradise in Cocoa Beach. This is much more than a place to get a gyro. There are Lebanese, Greek, and Middle Eastern choices on the menu. Trust me; it’s worth the drive. 

Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill has casual waterfront dining and a sports bar with good seafood and burgers. Live music livens up the atmosphere most nights. Great place to head over and watch the cruise ships leave port.

We have been to Florida many times but have not yet made it to Cap Canaveral. As space enthusiasts I can’t actually understand that. But it was fun to see that there is so much more than just the space centre. And those manatees would call to me! Fun to plan a few extra days if cruising from there.

A sport that’s both relaxing and much more of a workout than meets the eye, stand-up paddleboarding has taken the world by storm over the past decade (albeit an age-old activity), and Cape Canaveral is no exception.

Down at Cocoa Beach (just a short drive from Cape Canaveral proper), you can find a number of SUP rental companies, offering boards and lessons for all levels – even if you’ve never tried SUPing before, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s time to explore! Paddle your way around the shallow waters of the Banana River, keeping an eye out for turtles and rays, or make your way out to the open ocean for a real workout.

And while you might not think of Cape Canaveral as a golfer’s paradise, there are actually quite a few excellent courses in and around the area, perfect for an afternoon on the fairways under that toasty sun.

Just minutes from Cocoa Beach, the Cocoa Beach Country Club is a public club with some of the most breathtaking views in all of Florida. Each of its three courses – Dolphin (shorter,) Lakes (longer,) and River (most scenic) – feature 9 holes (27 total) with over 40 sand bunkers per course. If you still need some practice, you’ll find a driving range on-site, while the 19th Hole Restaurant dishes up a hearty meal once you’ve worked up an appetite.

Not too far away on Merritt Island sits The Savannahs Golf Course , a lush, peaceful course that’s perfect for a game or two.

With its subtropical landscape and unique, natural elevation changes, The Savannahs is unlike any other course you’ll play in Florida, not to mention the fact that it’s home to a slew of wildlife – keep your eyes peeled for alligators! You’ll find the Savannahs just minutes away from Kennedy Space Center,

Fancy a challenge? The 525-yard, par-5 7th hole is considered to be one of Central Florida’s most difficult fairways. Think you’ve got what it takes?

For those willing to travel a little further afield, the nearby Viera East Golf Club on the mainland is another great option, boasting 18 holes of championship golf on greens designed by renowned golf course architect, Joe Lee.

If you’re looking for something on the more affordable side and suited to the whole family, both Brevard Miniature Golf and Golf N Gator should do the trick.

23 – Enjoy all that the Banana River Aquatic Preserve has to offer

A visit to the Banana River Aquatic Preserve is one of the quintessential things to do in Cape Canaveral and, simply put, a must for any nature lover.

Comprising more than 30,000 acres of mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and salt marshes, the preserve is home to an abundance of wildlife, including manatees, dolphins, and bald eagles. Moreover, you’ll be greeted by the largest pelican rookery on the Atlantic Coast, have a high chance of spotting many an alligator, and are likely to run into a diamondback terrapin turtle or two!

There are numerous ways to explore the preserve, but perhaps the most popular is by kayak. You can rent a kayak from one of the many companies in Cocoa Beach and head out on your own, or sign up for a guided tour for a more educational experience.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, why not try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding? SUPing is a great way to get some exercise while taking in the stunning scenery.

And, of course, if you prefer to travel around in style, you’ll find no shortage of VIP boat tours or boat rentals to choose from.

24 – Walk the Yellow Brick Road at the Wizard of Oz Museum

We’re off to see the wizard!

Full of nostalgia, magic, and plenty of tributes to our favorite mishmash of oddballs (looking at you Lion, Tinman, and Scarecrow), The Wizard of Oz Museum in Cape Canaveral, just a 5-minute drive from Cocoa Beach, should be high on the list for any devout cinephile or fan of the classic tale.

Having opened in 2021, this new 20,000-cubic-feet museum is highly interactive, with modern displays that let you try on Dorothy’s shoes, travel through that infamous Kansas tornado, wander around Munchkin Land, and the dark forest, and stroll through poppy fields into the sparkling Emerald City.

A treat for movie (and book) fans, the museum contains a vast array of memorabilia, including Dorothy’s outfits, original film posters, comics, toys, maps, original props and costumes, collectible figurines, fine first edition books, and even the Wicked Witch’s broom! You’ll also find hands-on exhibits where you can have your photo taken in Oz with an ‘Immersive Van Gogh’-style 360-degree projection, or take a stroll down the museum’s very own Yellow Brick Road.

Not to be missed is the wide collection of original puppets and backdrops that were used in the 1950s and 1960s Chicago theater performances.

The museum is open every day from 8 am to 5 pm, with the option to have a guided tour with the owner if you book online in advance!

25 – Drift around corners at the Beachside Grand Prix go-kart track

Whether you’re a seasoned racer or simply looking for some fun things to do in Cape Canaveral with the family, the Beachside Grand Prix – found in the center of Cape Canaveral – is sure to get your heart racing!

With a large outdoor track designed for (safe) speed and thrills, there’s plenty of chance to drift around corners and put the pedal to the metal at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. With fast, fully electric karts and a track that (in addition to the classic twists and turns) includes vertical challenges with hills, this popular outdoor track is great for those who want to put their driving skills to the test.

Not only that, but Beachside Grand Prix also plays host to a mini-golf course to perfect your putting and snack bar serving up delicious food and drinks. So what are you waiting for? Start your engines and head on down to Beachside Grand Prix!

Hot tip: if you book a kart race, it’s only an extra $5 for a mini-golf session – so it’s better value to do both rather than just one or the other.

26 – Head to one of the rocket launch viewpoints

Dubbed the ‘Space Coast’ for good reason, Cape Canaveral is the perfect place to check out a rocket launch and witness the roar and exhilaration of thousands of gallons of burning fuel!

There are numerous viewing spots along Highway A1A, with most people heading to Playalinda Beach, Jetty Park, or Cocoa Beach Pier to watch the action.

If you want to avoid the crowds (and get a little closer to the launch site), try one of the many parks and nature reserves in Canaveral National Seashore – just remember that you’ll need a permit to enter these areas. Or, if you want to combine the experience with a dose of education, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville is a solid choice.

Of course, if you want the full VIP experience, there are plenty of tour companies that offer bus transport and access to private viewing areas for an up-close-and-personal view of take-off – check the Kennedy Space Center launch tickets website for the most up to date information.

27 – Go surfing!

Sun-kissed and always exuding a relaxed vibe (with launch days being the rare exception), Cape Canaveral is the perfect place to learn how to surf – or, if you already can hang ten like a pro, simply enjoy some time out on the waves in the warm Atlantic waters.

With a host of beaches to choose from (Playalinda and Cocoa Beach being two of the most well-known), great surfing conditions are easy to find. With long, consistent waves that make for an enjoyable ride, it’s no wonder that the Space Coast is a favorite spot for surfers from all over the globe – it is, after all, the stomping ground of many a pro including multiple-time world champion Kelly Slater.

If you want more of a local feel, away from the tourists near the infamous Ron Jon surf shop, then either of the Streets near downtown Cocoa Beach or 2nd Light Beach are great options; offering excellent breaks without the crowds.

The break most synonymous with all of East Coast surfing is Sebastian Inlet (a beautiful 45-minute drive south from Cocoa Beach); closer to home, Tables Beach is a crowd favorite, likewise the mediums tides of Indialantic Boardwalk.

But, if you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of surf schools in the Cocoa Beach area that can provide lessons and rentals for surfers of all levels.

28 – Cruise around with Space Coast Slingshots

What better way to soak in that synonymous Florida sun than by cruising down the A1A Highway with the wind flowing through your hair?

Well, you can do just that with Space Coast Slingshots – a company offering fun and exciting open-air driving experiences in its fleet of snazzy Polaris Slingshots!

With a collection of differently colored three-wheeled vehicles to choose from (each complete with a sound system, GPS navigation system, and backup camera), you’ll be stylishly zipping around in no time.

If you want to explore the Space Coast on your own, then you can hire a Slingshot for the day or half-day. However, if you want someone else to take care of all the organization, then opt for one of the company’s guided tours: in a follow the leader style, your local guide will skirt you around town ticking off all of the main highlights (from Cocoa Beach Pier to Ron Jon Surf Shop, Cocoa Village and Canaveral Causeway) with plenty of photo ops along the way.

29 – Book a table at the best waterfront restaurants

When you’re that close to the water, it would be rude not to make the most of it and enjoy some of the freshest seafood on offer.

Fortunately, Cape Canaveral is home to a great selection of waterfront restaurants where you can indulge in all manner of local seafood dishes – from shrimp tacos and lobster rolls to grilled mahi-mahi and fish & chips.

With such an abundance of fresh catches, it’s no surprise that many of the best restaurants in town have a seafood focus; here are just a few of the crowd favorites.

I'd plan about 20 minutes.

Thanks for the answers. I missed titled my subject line. My husband wants to go to the Space Center and that is what I am asking how many days one should spend there to see everything and what does one go there to see? This trip is for my husband interest, I am only the planner.

The average person should be able to get through the Kennedy Space Center attraction in a day, I believe including both the KSC and Cape tours, and the Saturn Five experience. If he's a super fan you might plan 2 days so he can spend extra time looking around, and maybe doing the tours again.

Kennedy Space Center is a must see on your visit to Cape Canaveral. Airboat rides, standup paddle boarding, kayaking and so much more.

Thanks No_Member_Name for your answers. So you confirm what I thought, two days at the Center for him. I will look into the programs you mentioned.

As for the launch that will be the icing on the cake but not going to plan our trip on a schedule launch. Since we are in Southern California we see the SpaceX launches from Vandenburg all the time.

In addition to everything already suggested, we like to spend time at the Port. Depending on the day of the week, you're likely to see cruise ships and fishing boats coming and going. It's fun to watch them unload all the fish they caught that day, even if you're not into fishing. We often see military boats including submarines entering and leaving the channel. There are some good restaurants at the Port also.

The fishing pier at the Jetty is another place worth checking out. We often see turtles swimming by in that area and birds waiting for a fishy snack. We almost always spot dolphins playing out in the ocean, or often in the water right at the port.

You could take a 2-hour eco-tour on the Indian River Lagoon with Island Boat Lines.

Whether you are traveling to Cape Canaveral for a vacation or on a cruise, you are probably considering a stop at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. Before you blast off, you need to be prepared if you want to do and see it all. So, we put together this list of what you need to know before visiting the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex.

What You Need to Know Before Visiting the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex

There are a lot of great things you can do near Port Canaveral cruise port . Of course, the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is at the top of many individuals’ lists.

Pre-Purchase Your Tickets

If you are thinking of visiting the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex, pre-purchase your tickets. Buying your tickets ahead of time allows you to bypass the ticket counter. Further, you can also save money when you buy tickets ahead of time.

Tickets are available through the Center’s website . Or, you can purchase tickets through several sites, maybe even your hotel. Mobile tickets make it easy too as you can just scan your phone to begin your adventure.

You Have to Pay to Park

Getting to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is simple. There are plenty of signs, and it is not far from the popular hotel strips near Port Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.

Do know that there is a charge of $10 for parking your car for the entire day. But, compared to the Orlando theme parks, this parking fee is not out of this world.

Public transportation is limited, with the nearest stop about a 15-minute walk from the entrance. You can take a ride share to KSC as well. Our share ride cost around $35 each way when departing from one of the popular hotels near the Port Canaveral cruise port .

Arrive Early

Current hours for the park are 9 am to 5 pm. We highly suggest you arrive early. The parking lot opens 30 minutes before the Center does.

There is a lot to do and see with all of the different exhibits and experiences. While we didn’t think we would spend a full day here, we were on property for a total of 7 hours and still didn’t get to do and see it all. So, plan accordingly.

Plus, arriving early keeps you one step ahead of the crowds.

Review the Showtimes and Events List

Once you are through the security gates and into KSC, you will find visitor guides and a daily schedule. Make sure to grab the one page daily schedule. There are a variety of different shows and experiences that are regularly shown in the Universe Theater and the IMAX theater.

You will want to determine which of these shows you want to see, so you can plan your day accordingly. Believe us, you won’t be able to take in all the shows in one trip.

Tech savvy individuals can access an interactive map and daily activities with the Kennedy Space Center Official Guide app as well.

Along with shows, there are other unique experiences like an astronaut encounter or autograph signing.

While several of the exhibits are self guided, there are also some guided time slots. For instance, tours of the Rocket Garden happen several times of the day. You can also get a guided tour of the Atlantis exhibit select hours of the day. These guided tours are complimentary.

Do the Apollo/Saturn V Bus Tour First

While most of the exhibits and experiences are walking distance from the entrance, there is one that is actually on the active space station. The Apollo/Saturn V Bus tour takes visitors past the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB. From there, the tour stops at the Center where you can relive the launch of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon.

There are several other exhibits, including the ability to view an entire Saturn V rocket up close. You can also experience the tension and exaltation of the first lunar landing. You can learn more about traveling to the moon and even touch a moon rock!

If you are visiting anytime soon, you might even get a glimpse of NASA’s newest rocket, part of the Artemis project, from the Saturn Center.

Following your time here, a second bus will pick you up for your return trip to the main park. Once back at base, you can explore more about the past and future of space travel.

Pack Some Snacks

Like we said, plan to spend the entire day at the park. Thus, make sure you pack appropriately for your journey to the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. While there are food vendors, you are allowed to bring a bag with snacks. Snacks and bottles of water are essential. This is Florida, and you will be walking outdoors in the heat part of the time.

There are security checkpoints and bags are scanned. So, note that glass containers are not allowed, nor is alcohol.

Among the concessions in the park is a Starbucks Coffee shop. Although, it was not open during our visit! Good thing we had our morning coffee before heading to the park.

Don’t Miss the Rides

Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex has a number of exhibits with tons of information. These interactive exhibits offer visitors a chance to learn more about space travel. While you could take all day reading and learning about launches, you can experience them too.

Well, you can get pretty close to experiencing them with the Shuttle Launch experience. This simulator ride gives you a realistic recreation of what it is like to take off in a Space Shuttle vehicle.

As part of the Atlantis exhibit, this is essentially an amusement park ride. But, it is well done, and the real life astronaut who guides you through the “training” is personable. Like a ride at a theme park, this attraction can form a queue.

Also note that bags are not allowed on this attraction, but you can leave them in the complimentary lockers next to the entrance.

Also new for 2022 in the Gateway Pavilion, there is the simulator KSC Spaceport. Another theme park style ride (think Disney’s Soarin’), there are various missions you can choose. While this attraction is new, the ride simulator technology was not the most advanced. Still, it is fun and gets you out of the heat for a bit.

Don’t Miss the IMAX Shows

No matter the destination, we always try to do and see as much as possible. Visiting Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex was no different. So, we were a bit on the fence about taking in a 40-minute IMAX movie during our limited time at the Complex. After watching the Journey to Space 3D movie, we are glad we made the time investment.

During our trip, there were two different IMAX movies, not to mention other presentations across the way at the Universe Theater. For us, the 2 PM theater time was the perfect midday break. It gave us some time to relax in air conditioning, while we snacked on some popcorn. After all, what is a movie without popcorn, right?

Your Little Ones Will Love Planet Play

If you are traveling with little ones, a lot of this might seem boring to them. Let’s be honest, with a full day of learning about rocket science, you might want a break too.

Tucked away next to the IMAX theater is Planet Play. This immersive multiple story play experience is designed for children ages 2-12 years old. It offers unique digital and physical activities in an out-of-this-world themed play area.

While your little kids are letting off steam, you can enjoy an adult beverage in the lounge. Along with beer and wine, there is also coffee and some relaxing furniture. So, take a much needed break from the sun, and crowds, while your kids explore and learn through play.

You Can View a Rocket Launch

Depending on when you visit, the KSC offers rocket launch viewing areas. We just so happened to be there when an Astra rocket launch was scheduled. While the launch was delayed over 90 minutes, we did get to see the craft rocketing to the sky from a less than stellar vantage point.

More patient visitors probably got a better view from the North Lawn Pavilion. Located next to the Atlantis Shuttle hall, this rocket launch viewing area offers bleachers and a hosted space to watch. During our trip, a KSC representative was on the Lawn giving real-time updates on the status.

So, it would be the icing on the cake if you could time your visit to actually see a rocket take off from a nearby launch center while at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex!

Honest Kennedy Space Center Review + Expert Tips (2024)

Whether you’re a Florida resident or just visiting, one of the lesser talked about attractions is the Kennedy Space Center.

Everyone seems to focus on Disney and Universal, while missing out one of the most fascinating attractions in all of the US – the Kennedy Space Center.

This is truly where the magic happens when it comes to the American Space program.

Countless astronauts have blasted off from their launchpads, and history has been made thanks to NASA’s work (and now private companies) at the center.

In this Kennedy Space Center review, we’re talking all about the visitor complex where you can get up close and personal to giant rockets, retired shuttles, and hear from astronauts about the day to day experience up in space.

As we’ll talk about later, the KSC is located about an hour’s drive away from Orlando (the main hub of tourist attraction in Central Florida), but that journey is well worth it for anyone who has ever dreamed of walking in the footsteps of the explorers who have raced to the moon, landed rovers on Mars, or discovered new planets.

Practical Tips for KSC

Below are some of the more need-to-know tips about the Kennedy Space Center.

Is Kennedy Space Center Worth It?

Before you go on reading about the Shuttle Launch experience or astronaut talks or any of the amazing things that the Kennedy Space Center offers, the main question on your mind might be, “Is the Kennedy Space Center worth it?”

While it’s close to some beaches, it is a commitment to visit from Orlando if that’s where you’re based on your vacation, and in the late 90s and early 2000s, KSC was not necessarily known for its quality.

It was fun, but maybe not a full day experience.

Nowadays, in 2023, a lot has changed at the center and the Kennedy Space Center is not only completely worth it, but should be a must-do on your Florida bucketlist.

Who Should Go to the Kennedy Space Center?

Is it too advanced for small kids?

Too many kiddie activities for adults?

Luckily, Kennedy Space Center is for everyone.

Genuinely, everyone.

For adults, there are plenty of fascinating space-themed exhibits.

For kids, there are interactive games and an awesome play area and IMAX movies.

For the teens, there are some cool simulators and the general awe of standing under a space shuttle.

You don’t need to know much about space or NASA’s missions to visit Kennedy Space Center , as they do a great job of explaining everything and helping you get immersed in this incredible world of spaceflight.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Overview

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is located within Kennedy Space Center. Kennedy Space Center itself is where all of the American rocket (and past shuttle and other) launches takes place.

The Visitor Complex is very much for-visitors, so you aren’t being given extra security access to some of the more important NASA buildings (as if!), but you do get to see them from the outside, and NASA has built out the visitor section with plenty of artifacts, preserved mission control rooms and space mobiles, and other information so you can learn about what they do without getting in the way of the astronauts about to launch.

The park is big enough to take up a whole day, but not so massive that it’s hard to get around, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost like you might at some of the bigger Disney theme parks.

Walking through the entrance is an experience unto itself, where you’ll see one of NASA’s launch countdown clocks used until recent years, as well as the beautiful “EXPLORE” letters.

Once you’re in the park, the first area is the Heroes and Legends exhibit, which has a movie intro and then takes you into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

It’s worth it to take a quick look inside, but it isn’t the best that KSC has to offer.

Further on you’ll find the Rocket Garden, which is exactly what it sounds like and is one of the best chances at the center to get really up close to some of the most famous rockets in NASA history.

Keep walking and head to the right and you’ll find the hub of Kennedy Space Center, including Mission to Mars (an exhibit all about how NASA is trying to both take humans to Mars and learn more about this mysterious planet), as well as the Universe theater where they hold astronaut talks and some movie showings throughout the day.

Under the awning there are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your lunch, as well as entrance to the Kennedy Space Center store, which we’ll cover later.

You’ll also find some really cool exhibits, including interactive walkway exhibits where you step on the tiles to make energy, as well as International Space Station memorabilia and the iconic NASA logo over the rotating Earth.

Follow through to the Bus Launch area, which will take you on the Kennedy Space Center bus tour that we’ll cover in a minute.

Or, keep heading through the awning and you’ll find the IMAX center (seriously worth seeing one of their IMAX movies – this is NASA, they’ve got the original space footage!) as well as the kid’s play area called Planet Play which they basically won’t want to leave.

You’ll pass some restaurants and bathrooms and arrive at the far corner of the park where the Atlantis exhibition and Space Shuttle Experience is found.

The Atlantis exhibition is for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to see a space shuttle up close.

While the shuttle program is no longer active, the spirit of the shuttle and all of the innovations it brought to NASA are celebrated in this fantastic and large exhibit.

There’s a brief movie as you enter, and then the doors open and you see Atlantis right in front of you, no longer in space but showing off here on Earth.

Throughout the exhibit there are fun kid-friendly interactive activities to see how well you could pilot the shuttle, as well as a replica of the space station made out of clear plastic tubes for toddlers and children to crawl in.

There’s also a fun slide to take you from the top to the bottom (but there are also stairs, don’t worry).

Adults will love the sheer amount of information about the shuttle, including exhibits on its boosters, how the shuttle is transported to the pad, and how it lands.

On a more somber note, there is a memorial for the two shuttles lost during the program: Challenger and Columbia. Each astronaut on these missions are celebrated and remembered, and there is a piece of wreckage of each that has been recovered.

It reminds you of the dangers of space flight and of the absolute bravery of each astronaut who pushes the boundaries to go beyond for the advancement of humankind.

Within the Atlantis building is the Shuttle Launch Experience, which we’ve dedicated its own section to below.

The final section of the park is the Apolo/Saturn V center, which we have included as part of the bus tour review since you can’t walk to it from within the park and must take the bus transportation.

Shuttle Launch Experience

One of the most popular things for KSC to advertise with on commercials is the Shuttle Launch Experience. They promise that you’ll feel what it’s really like to get on a shuttle and launch into outer space.

The reality is that the simulator at Disney’s Epcot, Mission Space, is far more intense than the Shuttle Launch Experience, but that means the experience is more family-friendly here.

No backpacks or purses can be taken on board, so you use the free lockers provided and then get in line and weave your way up to the entrance. Staff members should be able to tell you how long the wait is, but we only waited 10 or so minutes on a week day.

You’ll experience a prelaunch briefing, then get strapped into your seats for around an 8 minute experience where the simulator tips you so you are “laying” on your back in your seats, and then it’s off to space!

If the line is short enough, everyone should do it just to say they’ve done it, but if it’s relatively long, it’s really only worth doing if you have kids who will definitely enjoy themselves.

You do feel some “forces” on you and the simulator will shake and rattle around, but somehow I doubt this is actually how the astronauts feel!

Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour

The KSC bus tour and Apollo/Saturn V center is the crème of the crop for what the visitor complex has to offer (the Atlantis exhibition is a close second).

It’s also included with the price of your ticket!

The traditional bus tour is usually about an hour experience that takes you throughout the Kennedy Space Center complex, including launch pads, the famous vehicle assembly building, and to landing facilities and the Cape Canaveral lighthouse.

Unfortunately, as of January 2022, the full bus tour is not operating due to COVID-19 and there is no clear date of when this will be brought back.

However, a shortened bus tour that takes about 20 minutes will take you from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex out to the Apollo/Saturn V center, and along the way you will see the Vehicle Assembly Building and some launch pads.

To get to be roaming around NASA’s grounds with your bus driver is truly an experience of a lifetime for many who can look out to the launch pads and imagine a rocket blasting off or finally get a feel for just how massive the Vehicle Assembly Building is (it had to fit a whole Space Shuttle!)

Once you get to your destination, the Apollo/Saturn V Center, you take a self-guided tour through this fantastic exhibit which includes everything from information on the moon landings to an actual Saturn V hanging over your head for you to get a real sense of scale.

There’s a fantastic “experience” where you get to see the original Mission Control room for the first crewed Apollo V mission, and there are memorials to astronauts who lost their lives during missions during this time.

If the Atlantis exhibition is NASA’s more recent past, then the Saturn V/Apollo center is its real history, taking you back to a time when landing on the moon sent shockwaves around the world and rockets and capsules were much less advanced than they are now.

You can even walk across one of the arms to get to the rocket that actual crews walked across on the launch pad.

When you’re finished with this area (you could spend a solid couple of hours here, but there is a lot of other park to see so about an hour to an hour and a half should be good), you hop back on the next waiting bus which takes you directly back to the Visitor Complex.

Astronaut Talks, Events, and Movies

In between all of the exhibits, the Kennedy Space Center puts on a daily schedule of events that ranges from the IMAX movies to talks and Q&A sessions from astronauts (you would be surprised how many astronauts you’ve never heard the names of who just want to give back and share about their experiences at KSC).

These are well worth going to, and for many the highlight of the day as you can take some time to cool off in a dark theater or lecture hall and actually hear from the people who know spaceflight best.

Food at the Kennedy Space Center

There are no waiter-service restaurants at the Kennedy Space Center, but there are a few sit-down restaurants where you order and then get your food and find a seat.

If you’re out at the Saturn V/Apollo Center, Moon Rock Cafe has some options including chicken salads and pizzas.

Back at the visitor complex, Orbit Cafe is probably your best bet with the most options like pulled pork, burgers, pizza, salads, and more.

There’s also the Red Rock Grill (again, more of the same), which wasn’t open during our visit.

None of the food is gourmet, but it’s not bad for theme park food.

You can bring your own lunch in, however, which is what we’d recommend if you’re visiting from somewhere where it’s easy to pack your own lunch.

The snacks at KSC are definitely the real treat, with everything from hand-dipped ice cream to Dippin Dots to everyone’s favorite “astronaut” food (ie, dehydrated food that really should only be eaten if you’re in outer space, but many kids find fun to try).

Kennedy Space Center Store

Space lovers will be happy to know that the Kennedy Space Center store is two storeys full of memorabilia, T-shirts, mugs, toys, and so many space-themed items that your Christmas shopping for the year can basically be done all in one go.

It’s not just tacky stuff, either (though they do have things like shot glasses and bottle openers), but some really cool merchandise like flight jackets that can make you feel like you’re really a part of something.

There’s also a store out at the Saturn V complex if you end up spending more time out there.

How to Get to Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center is on the east coast of Florida, about 50 minutes to an hour from Orlando in good traffic.

The easiest way to get there is to rent a car and drive, but if you’re visiting Orlando and you don’t have a car, there are day trip options from Orlando to the Kennedy Space Center .

In fact, it’s one of the best day trips from Orlando , full stop.

The best tour of the Kennedy Space Center from Orlando is this one (you will be self-guided when you arrive at the Kennedy Space Center, like other visitors, but you can add-on the transportation from Orlando that would be near impossible or prohibitively expensive otherwise if you don’t have a car of your own).

Parking at Kennedy Space Center

Parking at Kennedy Space Center is plentiful, but is an extra $10 per car ($5 per motorcycle) on top of your ticket price.

Kennedy Space Center Tickets

Kennedy Space Center is one of those places where the ticket price on the day costs just as much as online, so really the only benefit to buying online is so you don’t have to stand in line at the ticket booth (which, honestly, is a great reason, but I’m just saying if you forget to do that then you can still purchase them there).

For adults, the cost is $57 per person, and for children it’s $47.

If you’re looking for Kennedy Space Center discounted tickets, the best places to check out are buying them via Undercover Tourist here, or if you’re a military member, you get discounted entrance.

You can also buy multi-day entrance for $82 per adult where you can come buy as many times as you want during the year, so if you’re local or planning on coming back, it’s not too much more expensive to add this on.

Tips for Visiting

• Arrive early: There is so much to do at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and so little time to do it. Guests are often disappointed that when they choose to arrive later in the day they end up missing out on large sections of the experience. Your family can explore for 2 days and still not run out of things to discover
• Plan Ahead: Knowing which exhibits you want to and planning your route can help those with limited time get the most out of KSCVC. The Visitor Complex sometimes offers special viewing options for major launches, and this is the best way to get up close to the action, but this is also one of the closest spots to view normal launches as well. If you can time your visit with a launch attempt there are sometimes speakers and events centered around them as well.

• Protect Yourself: While most of the artifacts are inside air conditioned buildings, a good chunk of time is spent out in the Florida sun and rain walking between major attraction areas. KSCVC is surrounded by nature and swampland, and as such, bugs can become an issue at certain times of the day. Check the weather and pack sunscreen, rain gear and bug spray as appropriate
• Know Your Peak Seasons:  Like other Florida theme parks, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is usually busier around the holiday season, and times when families have vacations. Plan your trip accordingly, pack your patience, and be prepared for slightly longer lines

7 Must-Know Tips for Visiting Kennedy Space Center

Visiting Kennedy Space Center (KSC) isn’t supposed to be rocket science. But I guess, in a way, it is.

I mean, before my first visit to Kennedy Space Center, I had a million and one questions.

Is the bus tour included in admission? How long is the tour? Can I purchase tickets online? Can I skip the line ( because patience and I don’t get along like we used to )? Why is the location listed as Orlando when it’s actually in Cape Canaveral? And is KSC even on Cape Canaveral or is it on Merritt Island?

So by the time I got to the wide concrete path leading up to KSC’s iconic tall white building, I was more than confused.

Until I wasn’t.

Just a few seconds before I entered, one simple word blocked over the KSC entrance, in clear sky blue, brought clarity: EXPLORE.

So that’s just what I did – explore. And during that time, I learned a few things to do (and not to do) whilst visiting Kennedy Space Center.

Here are 7 tips you need to know before visiting Kennedy Space Center.

Know Where To Purchase Your Ticket

There are a lot of places that “sell” Kennedy Space Center tickets. Most of the websites you see online offering KSC tours are either a) just general admission tickets ( not a personal guided tour as they’d have you believe – how rude ) or b) a scam.

If you want to purchase your ticket online before visiting Kennedy Space Center, you can do so here (on Kennedy Space Center’s official website).

Kennedy Space Center Tip: If you purchase your ticket online, make sure you print out your ticket before arriving! You need to have printed tickets to enter KSC.

Several companies also offer skip the line tickets, which is exactly what I crave at the Chicago O’Hare Airport ( yikes ), but out here – on Merrit Island – not so much.

I purchased my tickets in-person while visiting Kennedy Space Center and I don’t regret that decision one bit!

Your ticket ($75 per adult) includes admission to:

• Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour ( this is how you visit the Apollo/Saturn V Center )
• Rocket Launch Viewing ( if available )
• The Exhibits
• Astronaut Encounter
• Rocket Garden

When you purchase in-person, you get a map and a list of showtimes ( the map is kind of clunky, but the list of showtimes is incredibly helpful ).

P.S. Your ticket does not include parking. If you’re planning on visiting Kennedy Space Center by car, parking will set you back an extra $10.

Know That You Should Avoid Visiting Kennedy Space Center On The Busiest Days

Visiting Kennedy Space Center during the holiday season (between Christmas and New Year) can be overwhelming.

To be honest, KSC isn’t usually a crowded attraction ( I’ve always been able to get in and out of lines in roughly 20 minutes ).

But in the wintertime and summertime (when school is out), the waits border on hectic.

Try to visit Kennedy Space Center on a weekday morning if you can. Go early. KSC opens at 9 AM ( you can park at 8:30 ) and closes at 6PM.

The big bucket list items are the Bus Tour and Space Shuttle Atlantis. Head to those attractions first!

And if you have the time, opt for an early or late lunch outside ( there’s always a rush in the parking lot at noon ).

Kennedy Space Center Tip: Most restaurants and eateries at KSC close at 2 PM. If you’re planning on eating there, try to pick up a bite as early as possible (to guarantee seating).

My first time visiting Kennedy Space Center, I ate at Moon Rock Cafe .

I got to dine under the Apollo 5 Rocket ( which at first, made my nerdy heart sing for joy ). But to be honest, the menu is limited and crazy expensive. I just ate there because I didn’t know you could leave KSC and re-enter later on in the day ( if you plan on doing this, remember to get your hand stamped ).

Know That There’s A Bus Tour

The bus tour was hands-down my favorite part of visiting Kennedy Space Center.

The bus departs every fifteen minutes from the Visitor Complex and transports you to the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Kennedy Space Center Tip: The last bus tour (which lasts 45 minutes) departs 2.5 hours before closing. Don’t miss this attraction!

At the Firing Room Theater, the scene is set. You enter the Space Era. The race to launch a rocket is on. Sputnik threatens USA’s Superpower status. Worry brews.

This virtual tour is guided by a former launch controller so the experience is surreal. You feel like you’re listening to a memoir instead of a traditional guide. I loved every second of it!

Right outside is the Saturn V moon rocket. I still can’t believe this monstrosity is the size of a football field! Ridiculous, huh?

For Apollo 13 fans ( I’ve seen that movie way too times ), you can even see James Lovell’s spacesuit. Ah, fangirl moments.

After stopping by the Lunar Theater, exit towards Apollo Treasure Gallery, where Alan Shepard’s spacesuit and a bit of his lunar module, the Kitty Hawk, reside.

Alan Shepard is the most underrated astronaut in the Apollo 11 Mission. I can’t begin to describe how excited I was to see a commemoration to him.

Exploring space is like taking part in a stage performance. Just because we know the names of the lead actors (Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) doesn’t mean that the makeup artists and costume designers aren’t essential.

Know The Bag Policy Before Visiting Kennedy Space Center

Having my belongings screened while visiting Kennedy Space Center isn’t unexpected, but the process is tiresome and slow ( think Flash from Zootopia ).

Here’s what you can and can not bring during your Kennedy Space Center visit:

Know What To Do In The Rain

The sky is overcast, weighed down by a deep, broody gray. Rain begins to fall to the ground in heavy plops.

I duck inside. Afternoon showers in Florida are common.

And after spending two days visiting Kennedy Space Center, I was incredibly grateful for the wealth of indoor attractions ( considering it was raining 90% of my Florida trip ).

• Journey to Mars: This is a theater presentation followed by some multimedia exhibits that really get into the logistics of running a mission to the red planet. You can see prototypes of food that might grow on Martian soil. Unfortunately, the whole lab wasn’t filled with potatoes, but I’m okay with a non-potato diet ( Martian reference – I highly recommend picking Andy Weir’s book for the plane ).
• The Atlantis Zone: The Atlantis, a mammoth space shuttle rotated 43.21 degrees, is held in The Atlantis Zone. If you’re visiting Kennedy Space Center with kids, note that there are lots of interactive exhibits here.
• Imax Theatre: There are three different shows available daily. Since I had a two-day pass, I opted to see all three. Arrive early if you want to catch a glimpse of the 3D IMAX movie in particular ( this one gets filled fast ).

Know These 5 Kennedy Space Center Tips

It’s getting late. The sun has dipped. Blank white canvases of rockets penetrate a flaming sky.

• The Rocket Garden is best seen in the afternoon . Walking among some of NASA’s early rockets feels surreal. The garden is located by the front entrance, near the Heroes & Legends exhibit, and it’s one of those places that leaves a big impression.
• High-tail your way to Atlantis . Atlantis is the most popular attraction at KSC. The exhibit takes a full hour to see. It’s engaging and immersive and all-around fun.
• After enjoying the Atlantis Exhibit, get in line for the 10 AM bus tour.
• There’s a ride. Just one. The Shuttle Launch Experience. And I’ve heard it’s good. I didn’t really have the stomach for this since I was a  little  nervous (I’m not really one for rides).
• Watching a shuttle launch is included with admission ! I’m so mad I didn’t know about this before visiting Kennedy Space Center. I’ll link the launch calendar here .

Know That Kennedy Space Center Is Worth A Visit

Because the admission price is so steep, it’s hard to determine whether visiting Kennedy Space Center is worth it.

But after wandering through the Atlantis Exhibit, relaxing on a quiet bus tour, and standing amongst the larger than life rockets, I’m certain of one thing: KSC is magical.

It’s not magical in the same way Disney is. This is a place with real-life magic – a magic twisted from science and engineering.

And I guess that’s what makes it the perfect day trip from Orlando.

I went here when I was a kid and fully intended to take my kids for a visit when we went to Florida last February. We had just had a new baby, and I completely underestimated how difficult traveling with a little one can be. We ended up nixing the space center. We go to Florida fairly often because we have family there; so hopefully we will do this on our next visit. Thanks for sharing

Yes, you should totally head up there the next time you visit! It can tough to travel with small children, but fortunately the KSC doesn’t have many long lines, unlike theme parks, which is great when you have kids in tow.

This is the best write up on the KSC I’ve read. I grew up in Orlando and just took my English fiance there last year (who has never been exposed to the space program like I had) and he cannot stop talking about it to this day. Also gorgeous pictures. 🙂

SpaceX targeting early morning Friday for Falcon 9 rocket launch on Starlink mission

After Saturday's rare SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch doubleheader , the company is targeting its next Starlink launch from the Space Coast during a predawn launch window Friday, navigational warnings show.

Though SpaceX has yet to announce this mission's existence , National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and Federal Aviation Administration advisories indicate a 4½-hour Starlink 6-47 mission launch window will open from 2:14 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. EDT.

This mission is slated as the Space Coast's 23rd orbital launch thus far this year , maintaining a speedy pace that would shatter the annual record of 72 launches set during 2023.

More details on Friday's early morning launch window:

• Mission:  A Falcon 9 will launch a payload of Starlink broadband satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
• Location:  Launch Complex 40.
• Trajectory:  Southeast.
• Local sonic boom:  No.
• Booster landing:  Drone ship out on the Atlantic Ocean.
• Live coverage:  Starts 90 minutes before liftoff at  floridatoday.com/space .

The Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron forecasts 90% "go for launch" weather conditions, with a slight risk of a scrub triggered by strong liftoff winds or thick cloud layers.

On Saturday, SpaceX crews launched two back-to-back Falcon 9s within three hours and 38 minutes, sending the Eutelsat 36D telecommunications satellite and the Starlink 6-45 mission rocketing into low-Earth orbit from NASA's Kennedy Space Center and neighboring Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Looking ahead on the Space Coast launch schedule , a National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency advisory shows a rocket launch window will open from 7:12 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. Sunday.

SpaceX has yet to make a public announcement, but this is likely the company's Bandwagon-1 rideshare mission serving an array of small satellite operators. One — Capella Space Corp., which will launch its Acadia-4 satellite — announced that Bandwagon-1 is scheduled to lift off Sunday from pad 39A at KSC.

Then on Tuesday, United Launch Alliance will make its second attempt to launch the last Delta IV Heavy rocket on the NROL-70 national security mission. Target time: 12:53 p.m.
