The Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) unveiled its expanded schedule with at least 26 tournaments slated for its 50th season in 2023- two more than this year.

JGTO members will slug it out for a combined prize fund in excess of ¥3.3 billion across tournaments outside the four Major Championships, including three co-sanctioned events with the Korea Players Golf Association Tour (KPGA) and DP World Tour.

The Tour will tee off with the Token Homemate Cup at the Token Tado Country Club in Nagoya from March 30-April 2 and runs for nine consecutive months until the season-ending Golf Nippon Series JTC Cup from November 30-December 3.

The two new tournaments added to the Tour schedule are Hana Bank Invitational, to be held at Chiba Isumi Golf Club in Chiba from June 15-18 and Yokohama Minato Championship - Fujiki Centennial at Yokohama Country Club in Kanagawa from August 3-6.

With Hana Bank Invitational making its debut this season, the JGTO will now co-sanction two events with KPGA as the two Tours are currently joining forces to stage the Shinhan Donghae Open.

The professional golf scene in Japan continues to receive tremendous support from the corporate sector with Fujiki Enterprise Co., Ltd. and San Co., Ltd being the latest two companies to join the JGTO family, providing its members with more playing opportunities with the inauguration of the ¥100,000,000 Yokohama Minato Championship - Fujiki Centennial.

Another event that is set to generate a lot of interest in the forthcoming season will be none other than the ISPS Handa Championship at the PGM Ishioka Golf Club in Ibaraki.

The ¥270,440,000 (US$2,000,000) will become the first regular tournament in history to be jointly sanctioned by the JGTO and DP World Tour.

The tournament was supposed to make its much-anticipated debut this year, but it could not take place schedule due to ongoing travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.

Instead, the tournament still went on as a solely sanctioned event on both Tours, carrying the name of ISPS Handa Championship in Japan and ISPS Handa Championship in Spain.

For the 2023 season, there were changes made to several tournaments pertaining to name, dates and prize purse.

The Asia Pacific Open Golf Championship Diamond Cup will now be known as the ACN Championship Golf Tournament.

Traditionally held in May, the next edition will be played from October 5-8 with the venue will be announced in due course The Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup, The Crowns and Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament are the three tournaments returning next year with an increase in the prize pot.

The total prize money for Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup has been boosted by ¥30,000,000 to ¥150,000,000, while The Crowns and Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament will offer ¥10,000,000 more than their existing prize fund of ¥100,000,000 and ¥50,000,000 respectively.

The number of events on the 2023 schedule could go up to 28 as discussions are still ongoing in regard to the staging of the Heiwa PGM Championship and For the Players by the Players.

Of the two, the Heiwa PGM Championship looks more likely to return in 2023. Efforts are being made for the event to be held from October 26-29.

The DP World Tour moves on to Japan for the fourth tournament in Asia this season with the ISPS Handa Championship.

The highest-ranked player in the field is World No.59 Lucas Herbert. He is ranked 13 places higher than the second on the list in this week’s field, South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Both players competed in last week's designated event on the PGA Tour, the RBC Heritage, with Bezuidenhout’s tie for 19th particularly impressing. Given the considerably weaker field here, they will each be confident of performing well.

Ernie Els is one of the standout names in the field as he looks for his third win in Japan following his 1993 Dunlop Phoenix Tournament victory at Phoenix Country Club and 2001 triumph in the World Cup of Golf at Taiheiyo Golf Club.

The four-time Major-winning veteran won the Hoag Classic on the PGA Tour Champions last month and also appeared in last week’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town , where he finished tied for 56th in a strong field.

Elsewhere, Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello, who has four DP World Tour victories to his name, also plays, as he looks to add to that collection at PGM Ishioka Golf Club this week. Meanwhile, Dane Rasmus Hojgaard goes in search of his fourth win on the Tour while his twin brother Nicolai tees it up at TPC Louisiana on the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans .

While both Cabrero Bello and Hojgaard last won in 2021, there are more recent DP World Tour champions in the field. One of those is Scot Robert MacIntyre, won in last September’s Italian Open at the venue for this year’s Ryder Cup, Marco Simone Golf and Country Club . One of Team Europe’s vice captains in that tournament will be Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, and he also appears this week.

Last September, Italian Guido Migliozzi won the Open de France at Le Golf National, and he plays too, while another relatively recent winner on the DP World Tour is Antoine Rozner, who claimed victory in December’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

More recently, Marcel Siem claimed his first title on the Tour in over eight years with February’s Hero Indian Open, while Jorge Campillo won by two shots in the Magical Kenya Open in March, and they appear too.

Many local hopes will rest on the shoulders of World No.87 Kazuki Higa. Even though he missed the cut in his most recent start, the Masters at Augusta National , it’s not too long since he showed what he was capable of with a tie for fourth at the tournament won by Siem in February. Elsewhere, Yuto Katsuragawa is the defending champion following his one-shot win in the 2022 event, when it was part of the Japan Golf Tour.

Players are competing for a $2m purse. The winner will receive $340,000 while the runner-up will take home $220,000.

In 1978, the first Legends of Golf was held at Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas.

Two years later, the Senior PGA Tour had its first two official tournaments. Don January and Arnold Palmer won those first events.

From there, the circuit grew and in 1990, Lee Trevino became the first golfer to win $1 million in a season. In 2002, the tour was rebranded as the Champions Tour. In 2015, it took on its current name, the PGA Tour Champions.

Bernhard Langer became the winningest golfer in Champions history in 2023 when he got to No. 46, breaking a mark long held by Hale Irwin. Langer is also the top money-winner all-time on the tour.

He’s one of three players to reach the $20 million mark. Six players on this list have surpassed the $15 million mark. There are 31 at $10 million.

2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic money: Purse, winner’s share, updated prize money payout

japan golf tour prize money

The 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic prize money payout is from the $2 million purse, with 78 professional players who complete three rounds at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., earning PGA Tour Champions prize money and an official-money paycheck this week.

The winner's share of Mitsubishi Electric Classic prize pool is at $300,000, with the second-place finisher taking home $193,600. Mitsubishi Electric Classic prize money payout breakdown shows a payout of 15 percent of the purse to the winner, and how much each PGA Tour Champions player earns is guaranteed down to the last-place player, which is $1,080 for 77th place.

For 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic results and payout , see our final leaderboard

The Mitsubishi Electric Classic field is headed by Paul Broadhurst, Stephen Ames, Steve Alker and more.

This tournament started with 78 players, and a cut was not made this week after two rounds. Every professional player in the field is paid for completing the event, but how much each player is paid at the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic from the correct 2024 Mitsubishi Electric Classic full-field payout is based on their finish.

Every player still in the field can improve their position in the final round of this 54-hole event.

What else is on the line

Beyond money, there are important points, perks and benefits on the line for the field -- in particular, the tournament winner.

The winner of this event will get 300,000 Charles Schwab Cup points, as this is considered an official event on the PGA Tour Champions schedule with dollars converted to points.

There are no Official World Golf Ranking points on the line in PGA Tour Champions events.

While this event offers a significant payday, a win comes with the benefits that come with winning on the PGA Tour Champions. Winners of these events get better status and access on tour.
