John Anderson
Hoeing orange trees was less than ideal, and so John Anderson took a gig as a plumber’s helper. The pay was alright and the work was steady, but music pulled at Anderson’s 17-year-old heart, and you had to be 21 to play, sing, or drink in Central Florida honky-tonks. Anderson left his home — a magical kingdom until Walt Disney put Cinderella’s Castle on the land that God meant for fathers and sons to hunt turkeys together — and headed 700 miles northwest, to Nashville.
It was the summer of 1972, when songwriting legends walked the streets and pounded the pinball machines. Anderson wanted in, even if it meant living on wages that didn’t provide for essentials like bait and shotgun shells. He took a job as a construction laborer, working on a newfangled building called the Grand Ole Opry House.
Not long after taking the job, he got a raise: They raised him up to the roof, where he thought about how the Nashville wind blows cold and where he stared down at a big, deep hole, with rebars sticking up. That hole would soon become a stage, and that stage was where Anderson wanted to be.
Turns out, he made it. It was holy hell, but he made it to the Opry stage and far beyond. He made it with a voice that was traditional enough to make Emmylou Harris wonder if Anderson might be a distant relative of Lefty Frizzell, yet that was, and is, instantly identifiable. He made it with original music that landed him in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and with radio hits including chart-toppers “Swingin,’” “Straight Tequila Night,” “Wild and Blue,” “Black Sheep,” and “Money in the Bank.”
Before Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, and Randy Travis were household names, John Anderson was Nashville’s young and hard-charging traditionalist, devoted to extending the legacies forged by Haggard, Jones, and Cash, and loathe to compromise when he knew he was right. And, when it came to making music, he knew he was right.
“Back then, it seemed like there wasn’t a whole lot of real country music, the way I think of it,” Harris said. “Then along came John Anderson: John was doing this, and he was all by himself.”
Anderson signed with Warner Bros. in 1976, and set about making music that would gain notice from legends. Haggard heard him early on, and invited him on the bus for a heart-to-heart.
“He said his guitar player, Roy Nichols, brought him a 45 of ‘Your Lying Blue Eyes,’ Anderson remembers. “He said, ‘I’ve loved you ever since.’ But then he looked me in the eye and said, ‘Do you love this, son?’ ‘Yessir, I really do.’ No, do you really, really love it.’ I said, ‘Yessir. Hell, I’m talking to Merle Haggard and I can’t really stand myself right now, but I really love it.’ We went on to to 40 years of being buddies, Me and Merle.”
At the time “Your Lying Blue Eyes” came out, Anderson was playing with house bands around the South. The song became his first Top 20 hit, and soon the name “John Anderson” on a roadside club sign was enough to fill up a parking lot with Trans Ams and pickup trucks. A string of hits ensued, with “1959,” “Chicken Truck,” “I Just Came Home To Count the Memories” and “Would You Catch a Falling Star” leading up to his breakthrough, the John Scott Sherrill-penned “Wild and Blue.” That song was the title track of an album that included Anderson’s first million-selling single, “Swingin,’” written with old friend and running partner Lionel Delmore.

John Anderson is a singer and songwriter hailing from Apopka, Florida, United States who was born on December 13th, 1954. Since debuting in 1977 he has released 22 studio albums and had five number one singles on the Billboard country charts.
Unlike many country artists, the music that John Anderson grew up with was never country music, instead, Anderson grew up in thrall to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, to the extent that the first band he was ever in was a rock and roll band. However, That came to an end when Anderson was 15, when he discovered the likes of George Jones and Merle Haggard for himself. After that, all bets were off, Anderson wanted nothing more than to be a country singer, and in 1971, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue that dream. It was six years before he got his big break, and signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1977. Those six years paid off handsomely as his second single “I've Got A Feelin' (Somebody's Been Stealin')”, his first on a major label, charted on the Billboard country charts after its first week of release.
By the end of 1978, he'd broke the top 40 of the chart with the single “The Girl At The End Of The Bar”, and thanks to his distinctive accent and singing style, he became the forefront of the “New Traditionalist” movement along with Ricky Skaggs and George Strait. His mainstream breakthrough came in 1982 with the release of his album “Wild & Blue”, and most notably with the single “Swingin'” which was a number one hit on the country charts and even cracked the Billboard Hot 100 as well. Ever since then, Anderson has remained one of the most respected songwriters of his generation, with a countless amount of critically acclaimed albums to his name, and the kind of song-writing experience that many would give their left leg for. He's still touring to this day, and for everything he gave to country music, John Anderson comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee John Anderson has worked hard to build the reputation he now attains. Beginning his career in the late 70s out of Florida, he has gone on to release a string of hits and is now revered in the country music world by contemporaries and fans alike.
At the age of 60, a lesser passionate musician may have hung up their guitar and relaxed into a retirement to look back and consider the successes of their former career. This is not the case for John, he is hugely enthusiastic about his music and still plays with the same passion as when he was first trying to break onto the circuit almost four decades ago. The fans offer a similarly enthusiastic response to the hits including 'Wild & Blue' and 'Swinging' which are sang back loudly and feet stomp and shake the room. Anderson enjoys this reaction and raises his hands in applause following the finale of 'Straight Tequila Night' as the audience roars in delight.

John Anderson is a regular visitor of The Grand Ole Opry and has been for a very long time indeed. This guitar wielding singer songwriter along with a band of world-class musicians this evening, dives in to the mid tempo “Seminole Wind”, playing his Gibson Les Paul, sporting a black cowboy hat. The harmonies in the chorus really carry this song from start to finish. I must draw attention to the fiddle player who takes a solo in the middle of this song, and receives such a great amount of credit for it. It’s great to hear some of his biggest hits over the course of this evening with songs such as “Straight Tequila Night” and “Money in the Bank”, both of which being number one hits in the US Country chart. Both songs inspire the biggest sing alongs amongst this adoring audience, who are all out of their seats clapping and tapping and singing as loud as they can.
John and his accompanying guitar/dobro player did a great job. He acts like he loves his craft. We have been wanting to see him for many years and finally got our chance. He did not disappoint. Some of the crowd had too much adult beverages and made a spectacle of themselves, though.
One of the Greatest! Can't wait until the next concert close to home.such talent from a Humble man.John is country music and he is saving Real Country. He sings what country folks live each day.
