Day 1 Explore Iquitos: History, Nature and Culture with Peru Jungle Trips

Our tour begins with pickup by our local bilingual guide at the airport or your hotel.

Belen Market

From there, we’ll embark on an exciting adventure through the Amazon rainforest, visiting the Belén market and floating neighborhood, and exploring the stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife that the Peruvian Amazon has to offer.

At 7 a.m., we’ll start our journey through the streets of García Sáenz and Ramírez Hurtado, where you’ll see a variety of organic products extracted from nature, such as chonta, asaí, aguaje, guaraná, and more.

We’ll then continue on to the spice and condiment zone, where you’ll find cúrcuma, achiote, gengibre, and other spices.

Next, we’ll explore the herbalist’s zone at Pasaje Paquito, where you’ll see a variety of medicinal plants like Jergon Sacha, ajo Sacha, uña de gato, and Ayahuasca.

After that, we’ll continue on to the fishing zone, where you’ll see a variety of fish that inhabit the Amazon River.

We’ll enjoy traditional Amazonian cuisine, including dishes like grilled lagartos, Juanes with tacacho, cecina, and delicious Suris, which are considered a local delicacy. To conclude, we’ll take a 15-minute canoe ride on the Río Itaya to visit the floating neighborhood of Belén, an authentic expression of Amazonian life. From there, we’ll transfer to the Bellavista Ñañay embarkation point. 

Around 9 am, after boarding the traditional Amazonian boat (bote pamacari, bus amazónico) on the Río Nanay, we’ll meet the sources of the Nanay, Itaya, and Amazonas rivers after just five minutes of navigation.

From this point, you’ll be able to see the contrast between the turbid and black waters created by the union of these rivers as part of the Amazon River.

This sector is home to the pink and gray freshwater dolphins.

Continuing with our journey, we will make a stop at the Chullachaki Ecomuseum, where we will learn about Amazonian cultures and ancient instruments, as well as introduce you to the magical world of medicinal and aromatic plants of the Mother Forest.

You will learn about Ayahuasca, a total expression of Amazonian cosmovision.

Here, we will also demonstrate medicinal oils and remedies, and you can enjoy emblematic drinks of the region (such as RC, 7 Roots, 7 Times Without Removing, LPM or “Raise Dead Bird”, etc.).”

After 20 minutes traveling through the Amazon, we will arrive at Fundo Don Pedrito, a breeding center for Paiches in captivity, caimans, and other fish species.

Here, we will have a close encounter with beautiful specimens and learn about their diet. We will then continue navigating until we reach the community of San Juan de Huashalado, a shortcut between the Amazon River and the Río Yanayacu.

From here, we will take a 15-minute hike through the community to reach a new boat on the Río Yanayacu.

We will then navigate for 30 minutes down the river to reach the Yanayacu Eco Lodge.

Afternoon Activities

Once we arrive at the lodge around 2:00 pm, we will distribute the rooms and then go to lunch.

We will take a rowboat canoe ride down the river, listening to the symphony of the forest, waiting for nightfall, and enjoying the beautiful Amazonian sunset.

We will return to our lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 2 Sunrises, Living Nature, and Adventures at Yanayacu Eco Lodge

We will start the day in a canoe to see the sunrise and do some birdwatching around 05:00 am.

After breakfast, we will go on an ethnobotanical hike through the flooded forest, where we can enjoy centuries-old trees such as ceibas, kapok, and Machira Coriáceas. During the hike, we will pass through the natural habitat of monkeys, sloths, and other animals.

Lunchtime around 02:00 pm.

This evening we will be camping, sleeping under the stars, surrounded by the forest, and in connection with nature and the Pachamama (Mother Earth).

As we listen to local legends and stories we’ll enjoy a barbecue dinner outdoors.

After the delicious barbecue, we will go on a short nocturnal hike to look for insects such as tarantulas.

Day 3 Fishing for Piranhas, Cultural Encounter, and Stargazing in the Amazon

The day’ll start by breaking down the campsite, cleaning the area, and returning to the lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast.

We will set out on our boat to fish for piranhas, the voracious and delicious Amazonian fish.

Return to our lodge for a delicious lunch.

We’ll visit the Yanayacu Timicuro farming community and learn about their traditions and customs.

Finally, we’ll have dinner at our lodge and take a relaxing canoe ride down the river to observe the beautiful starry sky.”

Day 4 Unique Encounter with Monkeys, Yagua Artisans, and Farewell to Peruvian Amazonian Jungle

After breakfast, we will depart for the monkey island, a primate rescue center where you can interact and play with them.

We will then visit a clan of Yagua Natives, artisans dedicated to selling handicrafts, where they will demonstrate some of their traditional dances.

We will also have the opportunity to swim in the Amazon River as a farewell to our journey.

The Main Lodge

Our Main Lodge is 4 hours from Iquitos up the Amazon River and has access to a wide range of excursions and cultural experiences. Best known as the capital of the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos is a vibrant jungle metropolis and one of the most popular destinations to explore the unique biodiversity, vegetation, and wildlife of the rainforest.

Below, we’ve compiled ten of the best Amazon lodges near Iquitos that offer a magical place for any wildlife or nature lover to stay.

1. Heliconia Jungle Lodge

The Heliconia Jungle Lodge is located right on the banks of the Amazon River , approximately 50 mi (80 km) away from the buzzing city of Iquitos.

Right in the middle of the jungle, the Lodge is the perfect base to begin your Amazon adventure, which is why it’s included in both the 3-day Iquitos tour and the 4-day Iquitos tour .

2. The Otorongo Lodge

Close to the village of Oran, and 2,5 hours away from Iquitos, you will find the Otorongo Lodge – the only national heritage site in the Peruvian Amazon.

The Lodge has rustic cabins and each area is equipped with mesh nets to protect you against mosquitoes and other insects.

From the Otorongo Lodge, you can enjoy different itineraries and activities, such as boat rides and hiking. You can also spot different wildlife such as pink river dolphins, parrots, toucans, and macaws.

3. The Muyuna Lodge

The Muyuna Lodge is located in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve, about 87 mi (140km) away from the city of Iquitos.

5. The Explorama Lodge

The Explorama River Lodge is located in a private reserve 50 mi (80 km) from Iquitos.

Awesome! We stayed at the Heliconia lodge in 2018 and it was just amazing. What we loved the most were the well protected rooms against bugs and mosquitos. Really life saving haha.

Starting our exciting four-day Iquitos Jungle Tour at 7:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel or airport in Iquitos and head to the vibrant Nanay market. At this locale, we will delve into the heart of local commerce, experiencing firsthand the diverse regional products available.

Transitioning to 9:30 am, our journey will lead us to the renowned Monkey Island . Here, we’ll have the privilege of interacting with various monkey species and observing their habitats within a 5-mile (8-kilometer) radius. As noon draws near at 12:00 pm, we’ll then turn our attention to the tranquil waters of the Amazon, eagerly looking out for the elusive Pink Dolphins. Under the guidance of our experts, you’ll be enchanted by the sight of these graceful creatures, appreciating their elegance in their natural habitat.

Day 2 Sunrise - Wildlife Spotting - Victoria Regia - Night Tour - Eco Lodge

Starting the second day of our Iquitos Jungle Tour, we’ll rise with the dawn at 5:30 am to embrace the Amazon sunrise. As the first rays pierce through the canopy, they reveal the jungle’s magic, painting the treetops in shades of gold. During this serene time, the melodies of awakening wildlife set the ambiance for our ensuing endeavors.

Transitioning to 6:30 am, we’ll immerse ourselves in wildlife spotting, capitalizing on these early hours when the jungle teems with activity. Throughout our 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) journey, you’ll be introduced to an array of creatures, each showcasing the Amazon’s incredible biodiversity. Then, by 10:00 am, the spectacular Victoria Regia will be our focus. Here, we’ll stand in awe of the world’s most expansive water lilies, with their impressive span reaching up to 10 feet (3 meters), as they rest tranquilly on the water’s surface.

After indulging in a refreshing lunch at 1:00 pm, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to reflect on the day’s marvels and unwind. As dusk descends around 6:00 pm, the allure of the jungle’s nocturnal wonders will beckon once again. During our night tour, the enigmatic world of moonlit creatures will be unveiled. Drawing our day to a close by 8:30 pm, we’ll find sanctuary in the Eco Lodge, where the gentle whispers of the jungle promise a rejuvenating night’s rest, gearing you up for the adventures awaiting the next day.

Day 3 Jungle Hike - Wildlife Spotting - Jungle Lagoon Visit - Mirador Palo Alto Camping

On the third day of our Iquitos Jungle Tour , we will plunge further into the mesmerizing embrace of nature. Starting our day early, we’ll embark on an invigorating jungle hike at 7:00 am. This 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) journey will unveil the multifaceted beauty of the Amazon rainforest, with each step taking us deeper into its verdant trails.

Transitioning to 10:00 am, our attention will pivot to wildlife spotting. Bathed in the gentle glow of the mid-morning sun piercing the canopy, we’ll have the privilege of observing the diverse denizens of the Amazon in their untouched habitat. Our 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) journey promises intimate glimpses of the region’s distinctive creatures.

Reenergized by a nourishing lunch at 1:00 pm, our afternoon will then be guided by the mystique of a secluded jungle lagoon at 2:30 pm. Nestled in this oasis of calm, we’ll be treated to views of the vibrant aquatic life that flourishes in these peaceful waters.

With the sun casting elongated shadows by 5:00 pm, we’ll set our sights on Mirador Palo Alto. This idyllic camping site will serve as our night’s refuge, granting us a celestial canvas of the rainforest under a shimmering starry expanse. As we establish camp and the clock strikes 7:00 pm, we’ll be enveloped by the gentle lullabies of the jungle, culminating our day on a harmonious note, priming us for our forthcoming journey.

Day 4 Sunrise - Jungle Hike - Giant Ceiba Tree visit - Yungas Ethnic Group - Victoria Reiga - Iquitos

The final day of our Iquitos Jungle Tour beckons. It’s set to be a thrilling climax. At 5:30 am, as dawn breaks, we’ll rise. The sunrise will captivate us, with the jungle’s melodies greeting us. The forest bathed in gold is a vision to remember.

Then, a cultural treat is on the agenda. By 10:00 am, we’ll delve into the traditions of the Yungas Ethnic Group. Engaging with them, we’ll explore their distinctive lifestyle.

1:00 pm rolls around, and the Victoria Reiga beckons. We’ll get another chance to admire these aquatic giants. And, by 4:00 pm, our path guides us to Iquitos. The city’s energy welcomes us back. Memories from our expedition linger, sealing an indelible adventure.
